Tempo Cyclist – Tasmania

Road cycling lifestyle. Ride your damn bike!

Project Postal: 2002 Trek 5200 US Postal Team Edition (Bike Check)

Back in the late 90’s / early 2000’s the Trek 5200 / Trek 5500 was one of the lightest production frames available and was the very first carbon fibre frame to “win” a Tour de France. Ridden by big names such as Tom Boonen, George Hincapie, Tyler Hamilton and Lance Armstrong to multiple race wins, the bike was well ahead of it’s time.

I used to see an older gent cruising around on one in full US POSTAL kit years ago (now that guy is me) and I’ve always loved the classic lines of this frame. When the opportunity to snap one up in Tasmania came along, I didn’t need to be asked twice!

Apart from the frame, the rest of the bike had seen better days. I treated it to a complete strip down, then lovingly built the bike up using high quality modern parts. Some would say this is sacrilege and I should have kept it 100% standard, but I wanted a bike that would ride hard, not hold me back or annoy me with outdated tech. The Trek has turned out FAR better than I expected. Around two decades old and riding better than new! So here it is, finally finished.

I was blown away by the finished bike, she’s a dream! Sure, it’s never going to be an all-out race weapon or compete with with new-era aero bikes, but with a little extra “want to” I can just about keep up with modern machines . But it’s not about that, this bike truly is a joy to ride and brings a smile to my face every time I look at it or swing a leg over the top tube.

And that my friends, is what cycling is all about.

My Other Bike: Classic Trek USPS 5200

' src=

Back in 2000, an up-and-coming country cyclist by the name of Gareth Fuller made the Nationals as an Under 15. His parents celebrated by buying him a replica Tour de France-winning Trek 5200. More than two decades later he still owns it—and rode it to finish sixth overall in the inaugural 170km Mudgee Classic back in May.

trek 5200 oclv series

Strolling around the Glen Willow Regional Sporting Complex at the end of the 2021 Mudgee Classic, carbon bikes are a dime a dozen. There are literally hundreds of them everywhere you look, mostly of similar vintage and styling.

trek 5200 oclv series

But on closer inspection, one stands out. Resplendent in a decidedly retro livery of blue and white with red ‘Trek’ decals, it belongs to local Mudgee rider Gareth Fuller who has just piloted it to finish sixth place in the inaugural 170km Maxi Classic, with an average speed of over 40kph.

trek 5200 oclv series

Hand-built in the USA, and no doubt considered an absolute rocket ship in its day, Gareth Fuller’s replica 1999 US Postal Service Trek 5200 instantly conjures images—historic and contentious—of Lance Armstrong, George Hincapie and Co smashing the peloton across the countryside and mountains of France.

trek 5200 oclv series

Gareth explains his parents bought him the bike new from Sydney’s iconic Clarence Street Cyclery back in 2000, just after he’d made the U15 Nationals.

Considering he still rides it some 21 years later, it’s no surprise to learn the frame and handle bars are the only original parts left, with several modifications initially required to keep pace with his growing body, as well as numerous other component upgrades along the way.

trek 5200 oclv series

“As I got the bike so young, I pretty quickly outgrew the seatpost and the head stem,” he says explaining the Trek 5200 isn’t an actual team issue, rather a team replica.

“It’s a full carbon (OCLV) fibre frame with alloy drop-outs. It was originally running an Ultegra 6500 groupset with Rolf Vector wheels, but these days it has Dura Ace 7800 with Dura Ace WH-7800 wheels. The current headset was actually changed the day before the Mudgee Classic as the bearings were buggered!”

Casting an eye over Gareth’s pride and joy from close quarters, it’s clearly been very well used and certainly carries a few battle scars. But, as he points out, it’s also spent its fair share of time off the road over the past two decades.

trek 5200 oclv series

“I’ve ridden it, on and off, ever since I got it,” Gareth says. “Unfortunately, not long after we first bought it, I had glandular fever—for about five years I barely rode it at all. Then I had a short stint of racing in my early 20s, before I decided to go travelling. I actually took the bike with me to Italy with the idea of doing some riding and racing over in Europe. But it didn’t make it out of my mate’s shed!

“…I just love riding it in big bunches and testing myself against all the new carbon bikes…”

“It literally sat in his shed for a couple of years, before I finally brought it back home to Australia,” he continues.

“In my late 20s, I took it out for a few celebrity appearances here and there. But it was when I hit my 30s and started doing triathlons that I really began to ride it again. Would you believe it’s actually been my only road bike? I’ve become very attached to it.”

trek 5200 oclv series

Gareth reveals he even has nickname for his beloved Trek. “I call it ‘Lance’ and always joke that I’m channelling his climbing ability when I ride it!” he laughs. “After all, thinking your bike climbs well is 90% of the struggle, right?”

trek 5200 oclv series

Clearly, cycling technology has come an enormous way during the past 20 years. Does Gareth ever envisage a time when they’ll have to part ways?

“No, I don’t think so. I just love riding it in big bunches and testing myself against all the new carbon bikes. That said, I will probably be getting a new bike soon as I begin to race again. But I will definitely keep this one as a special occasion and classics bike.”

Glad to hear it, Gareth. We’ll look out for you and ‘Lance’ at the 2022 Mudgee Classic.

Trek 5200 - 1992

PRICE: 2950 EURO

The Flandrien Hotel’s beautiful Trek 5200 OCLV from 1992 embodies some big cycling industry innovations.

Trek Bicycle company was founded in 1975 by Dick Burge & Bevil Hogg in a big red barn in Wisconsin USA. While the company started out making steel bikes, by the mid- to late-1980s Trek was also producing high-end bonded aluminium and carbon frames for the domestic market and for export.

Greg Lemond had won the Tour de France on a LOOK KG86 carbon bike in 1986 and interest in the new material skyrocketed. But the bonding of carbon tubes and aluminium lugs was problematic, and frames made with the method tended to wear out quickly.

In the early 1990s, Trek’s director of technology, Bob Read, attended an aerospace industry event in which latest developments in carbon bonding methods were presented. That experience convinced Read that Trek should focus on leveraging new production approaches to make lighter, stronger and more reliable carbon bikes.

After some early hiccups, in 1992 Trek unveiled its first full carbon framed bicycles using its new and top-secret manufacturing approach. Instead of bonding carbon tubes into alloy lugs, Trek’s new production method involved placing carbon into a series of layers that were then compacted using heat and pressure inside a mould.

The new Trek frames were given the moniker OCLV which stood for “Optimum Compaction, Low Void” and referred to Trek’s closely guarded proprietary manufacturing process. Weighing in at only 1.1 kg the OCLV frame was the world’s lightest production road frame at the time.

Our Flandrien Hotel example of the Trek 5200 OCLV is also an exemplar of another big innovation – the arrival of Shimano Total Integration (STI) integrated brake/gear shifters that hit the market in 1990. Shimano’s STI marked the eventual move away from traditional downtube shifters, and the ability to change gears without moving hands from the handlebars.

The Trek 5200 reminds us of the need to constantly innovate in technology-based industries. While companies like Trek and Shimano were visioning new and radical designs and production approaches, established (especially European) competitors were focused instead on incremental improvements.

While French and Italian companies like Simplex and Campagnolo were obsessing with creating frictionless downtube shifters, Shimano re-imagined the human-bicycle interface.

And the companies like LOOK that were pressing carbon tubes into aluminium lugs in the 1980s were basically applying new materials to a century old manufacturing approach – while Trek was looking to adjacent industries to discover how else carbon fibre could be shaped and bonded to deliver step-fold improvements in performance.

So our beautiful Trek is not just a cool bike – it embodies innovation lessons for us all.

It's a 2003 or 2004 5200. In 2005 they went to the 'Madone' name and got rid of the wishbone seatstay. Yours is made with OCLV120 carbon. I checked some of the model year links from the archive link and was surprised that the paired spoke wheels went on for a few more years. Lots of people had issues with those wheels, but I never did with probably 25k miles on those wheels. The galvanizing/corrosion between the dropouts and the carbon fiber show some of the bike's age, but that's no worry, that's a fine bike to ride.

High carbon frame quality for the money. It is worthy to do upgrades as needed. -- Roll Off Dumpsters

None so far

Light, strong, tall enough for my long legs with the most impressive shifting mechanism I've seen and it is fast!!!

It's short in the front, so I feel like I'm moving head first into traffic so I swapped out the handlebars for a taller aluminum pair. I'm much happier with it now.

I just bought this bike used from a retailer in Miami. I nearly bought an English touring bike but the owner answered the phone leaving me alone. I picked up both bikes and carried them around for a minute simulating carrying it up a flight of stairs. I fell in love with the Trek. I don't race so I took off the racing tires, handlebars and pedals. What an amazing street bike it has become. This is my first graphite, it's tall, fast and I am delighted with it! For those considering a Trek racer, I am over 50, female, frugal and active. So if you are too I recommend the 5000!!

Stiff and light and very responsive and can carry a heavy man.

Bought this bike new in 2003 and have put 15K + miles on it in races and mostly training rides throughout Texas and New Mexico. I liked the paint scheme over a specialized, which was a little lighter by .3 lbs.. This one weighed in at 16.6 lbs in a 54cm frame. Talk about a smooth ride. I road a Schwinn Letour 50 miles one day when I was in my late 20's and thought I would die even though I had been riding 20 miles several times a week. At 50, after buying this bike and riding if for a couple of weeks, I rode 60 miles and could not believe that I did not die! lol A great bike for my first carbon bike and one that I will keep until I cannot ride anymore. Thanks Trek for a great ride! I am now in the process of upgrading this one into a compact x 11 speed to ride in Thailand where I now live. For the money, I cannot find a replacement Trek near as light as this one so that is why I am upgrading this frame.

Exellent and I have one for sale 619) 634-5904

None I have an extra one for sale

Am located in rancho bernardo am a student and I have a trek 5000 for sale exellent condition 1000 for it thanks will mail it u pay the cost thank you.

Comfort, Durability, Nice to look at.

Some of the original parts, seat, wheels etc.

I have had this ride now for 5yrs, and I always threaten to upgrade, never have and probly never will. The $2300 are cdn funds. This ride and I have an understanding...it's great when you get to this level with a ride. When I first got it I went down twice...HARD...lots of skin left on asphalt and destoyed so nice kits. The bike suffered a few minor scatches that Mercedes silver touched up nicely. I cycle about 4500k per year, lots of hills and distances. This ride preforms awesomely. Its a frame that, over time, will lend itself to many nice upgrades without dropping a small fortune on a new ride.

None really, tried this and that but kept coming back

High carbon frame quality for the money. It is worthy to do upgrades as needed.

Bontrager components, except the seatpost

I bought this bike in Sept 2004, as a 2005 model. It is the OCLV 120 frame with OCLV 110 fork. So, after more than 5 years of training and racing on it, I guess, I can give my feelings about it. This review will be more on the frame which is worthy of future upgrades, than in the bontrager components, which I think, are of low quality in general, at leats in these price range. I've put on the miles (2500-3000/year) and the frame looks to be able to take it in stride, able to hold true over the long haul on rough training roads. The best advantage about this bike geometry is its ablity to climb, and accelerate in intervals as go up.

no much to compared

The price for what you get..... Compared to my Madones, it really is a great bike !!!!!!

The stock saddle and the Bontrager Select wheels.... But the wheels are great for training......

I currently own 4 Madones (3 with OCLV 55 and 1 with OCLV 110) and got this bike as a training bike.... Wow was I surprised on how well the TCT carbon rode.... The only change out I did was the seatpost and saddle (Switched to Bontrager X-lite post and Selle San Marco Aspide Composite saddle).... Very surprised on how well this bike performs for the price..... Plus the silver paint looks great !!!!! Compared to my Madones, I really love this bike.... Now I am going to build it with DA 7800 and put on Bontrager X lite wheels.....

2007 Trek Madone 6.9 SSL Stock, 2007 Trek Madone 6.9 SSL Project One, 2005 Trek Madone SSL, 2005 Trek Madone 5.9 SL, 2003 Trek 5900, 2003 Trek 5200

smooth, shimano ultegra componentry is nice

seat is horrible, and bontrager tires are crap

had it for 2 years and have had zero problems, great value for money for a full carbon bike. Have had 2 quite bad crashes on it and it's still going strong! Great first all carbon bike

giant alloy

Smooth shifting on flats and hills.

Changed seat after first ride. Bontrager tires are fair. Changed them out within 2 months.

My first "real" bike coming off Trek 370. Steel frame and carbon fork. Great price for all carbon frame, 105 components. Did not come with a triple. Changed to compact crank. Smooth ride on all types of roads.

Road damping, triple cranks

Heavier than I expected for a carbon bike. My Cannondale aluminum is much lighter. Suspect the heavier weight are from the stock Bontrager Select wheelset. Stock seat was horrible, numbingly painful and swapped it out. Paint and faux carbon decals covered the natural beauty of carbon fiber.

My first all carbon bike. Like how it smooths out a ride. Especially the longer rides. Initially did not like having triple cranks and was going to change to standard double cranks. But after several hill rides decided to keep it.

Our strongest, lightest carbon yet

OCLV Carbon is Trek’s patented carbon fibre process, the result of more than 25 years of experience building the world’s finest carbon fibre bicycles in Waterloo, Wisconsin, USA. Experience matters, especially when working with a material that holds seemingly endless possibilities but presents such unique challenges as carbon fibre. To understand the best technology, you have to build it, and we’ve been doing just that since 1991.

Why OCLV Carbon?

A well-built carbon frame dramatically reduces weight compared to metallic materials, while maintaining the strength and stiffness that high performance bicycles and their riders demand. This is where Trek’s pioneered and patented OCLV Carbon—an acronym for Optimum Compaction Low Void—process comes in. OCLV Carbon frames begin with the best material available. Trek has spent countless development hours perfecting the construction of a variety of weights and types of carbon (cloth, unidirectional, etc.). The OCLV process is best explained when broken down into two parts:

Optimum Compaction: Carbon is layered into a series of plies compacted to the ideal fibre-resin ratio. The process starts with cutting carbon fibre from large sheets to a specific shape which is then placed into a mould. A combination of heat and pressure then compresses the sheets of carbon into a carbon lug. This combination of heat and pressure is OCLV’s most essential and closely guarded equation. Low Void: Voids are the spaces that exist between the layers of carbon fibre that comprise a component or frame. Minimising these voids is the primary goal of quality carbon engineering, as more voids translates to reduced strength and durability of the composite material. OCLV Carbon exceeds aerospace standards regarding the number of voids in its material.

Shapes matter

In addition to sizeable reductions in weight, the largest advantage of carbon fibre frames over another material are the limitless shapes that the material can be moulded into. Different shapes exhibit different strength, stiffness and aerodynamic properties. Trek utilises Finite Element Analysis, a comprehensive software simulation toolkit, to tell us exactly how different shapes will respond to different riders and riding surfaces. We utilise proven theories of fluid mechanics through Computational Fluid Dynamics in order to explore the aerodynamic properties of various designs. Our bikes are conceived with computer-generated designs, fluid-dynamically assessed and finite analysed, and the resulting shapes appear seamlessly machine-made. At the end of the day, these complex scientific investigations are applied in a hands-on, ground-up process that combines multiple moulds with a variety of carbon materials to result in a magnificently engineered and largely hand-built product.

OCLV Mountain

Mountain biking is about pushing the limit of where your bike can take you. Riding on every conceivable surface in hostile conditions takes a toll on any material. To develop OCLV Mountain, Trek’s engineers developed a methodology borrowed from the aerospace industry to ensure our frames were up to the challenge: Retained Strength. The philosophy is simple and based around the single question of how durable a frame remains following impact. By employing different composite materials in unique layups specifically in typical high damage areas, Trek’s engineers have created frames that now retain their ability to bear load after an impact surpassing even their aluminium counterparts.

Carbon armor

Taking durability to another level, Trek’s development team created Carbon Armor, a highly refined elastomeric designed to slow down and spread the distribution of a sharp impact to the frame. Carbon Armor essentially decreases the immediate impact of a rough hit the frame feels, leaving you feeling more confident than ever to go after that next drop.

Built to last

Trek builds bikes to last and we stand behind every one that we bears our name. Just as the first Trek hand-welded over forty years ago in a red barn, our first full carbon frame is still under warranty. All OCLV Carbon bicycles come with a limited lifetime warranty, because we believe that more people riding bikes is in everybody’s best interest.
