Iconic American music legend Willie Nelson set the bar for country music with a music career that dates back since the 1950s.

Born during the great American depression on 29 April 1933 in Abbott, Texas, Willie Hugh Nelson worked some odd jobs and had a short-lived college career at Baylor University until he left it all to pursue a music career. He caught his big break in 1961 when he signed with Liberty Records and by 1962 released his first record “…And Then I Wrote.” By the fall of 1964 Nelson moved to RCA records, released “Country Willie- His Own Songs” and joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1965. While some of his songs charted, Nelson was finding difficulty to fully stay afloat and from his frustration retired from music around 1972.

But that was not the end of Willie Nelson. He moved to Texas and the growing hippie music scene revived his love for singing. Playing songs inspired by all of his influences, he started to gain a following in Texas, eventually signing with Atlantic Records, becoming their very first country artist. By February 1973 he had started recording what was to be one of his most iconic records “Shotgun Willie.” The album didn’t do so well at first, and Nelson released one more album before moving labels again, this time to Columbia Records, a move that allowed him complete creative control. This change was exactly what he needed to “turn around” his music career, starting with the critically acclaimed “Red Headed Stranger” album; additionally it lent to the creation of the outlaw country genre, as it did not fit with the traditional country music standards.

The rest of the 70s he found himself with four albums reaching gold and platinum status, one of which was his first gospel album. And the 80s were just as successful with three Grammy awards for Song of the Year, Best Country Song and Best Male Country Vocal Performance. However in 1990 Nelson ran into some legal trouble with the IRS, allegedly owing over $30,000 in tax money. Luckily things worked out, with his lawyer getting a lowered payment and Nelson using the scenario as inspiration for an album he entitled “The IRS Tapes: Who’ll Buy My Memories?”

Even at the age of 81 Willie Nelson continues to thrive. He continues to put out new music, play for his fans and be active with Farm Aid, an activist movement he helped start to increase the awareness of the importance of family farms.

Live reviews

Before I give this review I want to highlight or point out there is a VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGE for Willie in this review.

This concert was the first of a three night stretch at whitewater in new braunfels,tx. And the beginning of Merle and Willie's national tour. My significant other(Jen) and I decided to make this our celebration for our 16th anniversary(of not being married). Haha. I know this is a place for a review of the concert and I will say the concert was unforgettable for sure. There were too many separate events within the event to go into. I can just tell you we had an absolute blast. I saw Willie about 25 yrs with my Mother in Corpus Christi, Tx. I will say he has toned down since then. but haven't we all? I know it seems like everyone who follows Willie or has met Willie has a connection with him and I'm sure they do.

I just feel that my connection is so much more genuine and only Willie will be the only one able to confirm this to be true.

I spent my summers growing up in Helotes,Tx. Where Willie used to play every Sat. Night at John T. Floors. When my mom and dad as high school sweethearts would sneak in to. A dance hall in downtown Helotes. This is when he had short hair and always wore a tie when he preformed. There is still a sign of "Willie Nelson Every Sat. Night" that is hung in front of Floor's entrance. Pretty cool. It gets much better.

From the time I was born to my earliest memory was from Medina lake where I lived the first 6 yrs of my life from 1973 thru 1978-79. Furthermore spent many summers there with family. The significants of this will be revealed when I tell all, my connection to him. I'm sure Willie won't be the one that reads this initially but he for sure would like to hear from me.

I tried to get to him at the concert but he is a rock star and it's tough to close enough to him to get his attention. I know he would have love to hear from me. And to hear the message I was sent to give him. Due to the tight security and the disbelief of who I am of the ones who manned the gates I was not able to catch Willie before he apparently left the scene. I tried everything to just get a message to him. Didn't even need to see him face to face. Just needed a message sent to him. I even offered $500.00 to a gate keeper to just relay a message to him. I was ultimately turned down. I felt I was under some pressure to make this happen and I was unsuccessful. This is one reason why I'm doing it this way. The person that is reading this I hope will have the compassion to make this happen. Getting this message to him.

The message I was sent with and who I am will now be explained.

First to tell you who my Mother is and the message she sent me to relay to him. She told me to tell him that I am the son of the person that not once, not twice but three times told her that "you are the prettiest girl in Texas"!! And for sure looked the part. She was at the ripe ages of 17-20 yrs old a knock out of a girl. Here name is Patricia Cullinane. Now if that doesn't ring a bell or bring back memories the next paragraph will. My mother Patricia Cullinane is the sister-in-law to Linda Stewart(my only Aunt). Now we are getting to the connection that I have with Willie. My Aunt Linda(Stewart) is the daughter of your(willie's) very first promoter, CRASH STEWART. Us kids growing up called him "Papa Crash". We would go to his place on Medina every summer and many yrs after he had passed away and swim and enjoy the lake. My only two first cousins Jeff and Tim and I would and do talk about "Papa Crash's" successes and the exclusive life he led. In our eyes he is a

"Revolutionary". I grew up looking thru a roll-a-dex(that Aunt Linda still has)that was Crash's. It has names, phone numbers, addresses and other personal information of all the, now famous people. Charlie Pride was one of them and of course Willie and many others that Crash promoted. This was something that I would forward to checking out when I would go and stay with Grandma who is another person you(willie) could never forget for she was Crash's wife Barbara. My Aunt Linda's mother. Us cousins have grown up and have the stories of our parent's experiences with willie. He has been an indirect influence on all of us growing up and still does. We are honored to be a relative to the man that saw Willie Nelson's potential when he first started, and had a hand in his success. way back when.

I can't go without mentioning One more name you would remember from those days. That is. Jackie Stewart, My Aunt Linda's sweet sister for which I have a picture of you and her together. Not as a photo opp. but rather casually hanging out. Of course you know of her passing many yrs ago. She was gorgeous.

I was instructed by My Aunt Linda to get a message to you(willie)an update of her Mother Barbara. and Step dad Joe Turner. Joe passed away last month. Barbara is now widowed and is being cared for by Aunt Linda. And that her husband my Uncle Tommy Cullinane( my moms brother)is living with Alzheimer's. She has been awarded the first award from scott and white hospital "Hero of the year" award for taking such good care of Tommy and Barbara.

We are very proud of her. I was instructed to relay all this to you. This is information that we thought you would appreciate us giving you. On top of all this. I've wanted to tell you how much I have admired your success and to see the person my family has so many memories and the fact that Papa Crash or Crash Stewart helped in your success story.

Unfortunately I was not successful getting this to Willie(you)

Maybe songkick or the person that is reading this review for willie will help me get this to him. My name is Scott Taylor and I currently live in the highland lake area. I too would love to finally meet you and show you these pictures And tell you the stories that we have heard and told all my life. I appreciate your time and your attention to this review. My whole family appreciates it. You will always be family to us and a legend In our minds. Thank you Mr. Nelson. We hope to hear from you in Reference to Crash Stewart your first promoter.

My email is: [email protected]

P.s. I will be posting this letter to every possible outlet or link to get to Willie himself. Thanks again for your time.

Most in our group had a great time last night at Willie Nelson and Family, with opener Tennessee Jet. I say “most”, because others were less able to ignore a growing trend: people spending more time documenting their time at a show than actually being in the moment enjoying the show. This is not limited to the occasional snap of a pic, but taking group pictures with their backs to the stage, selecting the perfect shot, posting it to social media and discussing the responses. STOP IT PEOPLE!

Now for the show. Willie was, well, Willie. Yes he’s in his eighties, and no longer possesses the vocal range of his youth, but he has found new ways to express the soul of the words that if anything, allow one to rethink a tune they’ve long since committed to soulless, rote memory. And his guitar playing? Masterful, and still so uniquely his. If Id been led blindfolded into the venue, I would have known at the strum of the first cord who I was hearing. The band, friends and family, complemented him perfectly, neither overstepping nor understating the partnerships.

Some complained the show was short and there was no encore, but I think if they review the setlist, they’ll note there were many tunes; there was just not any meaningless banter and the whole encore routine is kinda tired anyway.

To those signed up to see a show to come. You'll have a great time, if you limit your in-show screen time.

The concert was pure Heaven! Willie was absolutely amazing! He walked right out, picked up Trigger and he did not stop! It was one classic memory after another! His son Micah stood to his right, there was a bass player, a snare drummer and a guy that played the harmonica, together they played flawlessly! The sound was magical ! I was worried the quality of Willie’s music would have been less than standard because of his age....but he left me wanting nothing! When he played Trigger, his fingers floated across the strings and could be described as nothing but pure perfection. I must say that hearing children laugh, waves on the beach and Willie play his guitar are my top three favorite sounds to hear. Last night was a dream come true. I will cherish this memory for the rest of my life. I smiled through the entire concert, and honestly, I am smiling now. Thank you Willie Nelson!

Now, the opening act was a lady named Cassidy Daniels and she was a doll! Her sound is an updated Janis Joplin, and I totally want to hear more from her!

Seeing Willie Nelson was A big check off of my bucket list! Getting to hear Cassidy Daniels for the first time was icing on my cupcake!

Theres no doubt Willie Nelson is a true country legend. I was in awe of him as he took the stage at the age of 79. Thats right 79 years old, quite a feat. He certainly didn't show his age as he entertained the audience for the best part of 2 hours.

The venue was large and had an equally large stage, it was in no way intimate. It was, however a largely a laid back affair, he sang numerous country and blues tracks, many of them I wasn't overly familiar with but Willie and his band performed them flawlessly. The audience largely watched in a silent admiration as he lead the band throughout and sang old tails of loss and sorrow that are cliche of the genre that made him a superstar. There were shouts of approval and cheers as the band kicked things up a couple of gears and started jamming and improvising at various point though out the show. Between tracks he told stories of his childhood in his naive Texas and was comical and charming performer. It was a very bluesy set but of course his greatest hits were all played. Leaving “You Were Always On My Mind” as the grand finale. A wonderful show by one of the greats of country music.

Willie Nelson, an icon on the country music scene is still touring almost 60 years since he first began as an artist. It is a credit to his musicianship and showmanship that he is able to still delight crowds all over the States with his melodic, classic sounds.

Willie has been releasing music solidly and consistenly since his very first album 'And Then I Wrote' in 1962 and with a discography that now stands at 62 albums and 110 singles, it may seem like an impossible feat to choose a setlist. However Nelson's enthusiasm and charm as a musician means the crowd are submissive to anything he plays as to see this icon perform live is a treat in itself.

After all these years though, Nelson knows the likes of 'Rainy Day Blues' and 'Bloody Mary Morning' still get his audience clapping and singing along as his slick band perform renditions of these much loved tracks. A sincere performance of his most international hit 'Always On My Mind' makes the audience realise that despite his age of 81, there is no place Nelson would rather be than onstage entertaining his crowd.

What a disappointment... I'm still a Willie fan, but he spoke through the songs more than he sang them, and the arrangements on all of the songs was such that he sounded like he was rushing through the lyrics. Also, the arrangement for almost every song was such that, other than the lyrics, they all sounded pretty much the same. I'm sure I'll draw flames from the die hard Willie fans, but I would have been better off staying home and letting a true, die hard fan take my seat. Kudos to Willie for still kicking it out, but maybe its time to consider doing more recording than touring.

The Outlaw Music fedtival 2017 was a fabulous show!! The whole line up was fantastic. I didn't know a few artists with Willie but of course all were above average and so great to listen to! We had a great time - Eric Church surprised everyone by an awesome solo acoustic performance, Sheryl Crow amazing - and Willie never ever disappoints. The song choices were all I could have hoped for, singing with his family- just loved the night!!! Only wish I could have been done front to have a shot at Gettjng Willies hat as he threw it to the audience!

Arrived in South Carolina to the arena to a sign saying the show was cancelled. I called the ticket vender to ask about the tickets. They said the could not confirm that the show was cancelled at that would attempt to find ot in 72 hours and the "might" email me.

So I can't review the show. I may have to litigate. They said they may not be able to refund. So I may make a criminal complaint. Or more simply..

Got my lawyers number saved in my phone.

We had an excellent time. It was great to see Willie so energetic and he played non stop. I hadn't seen him in quite a few years. The show seemed to end a little earlier than expected and I was a little disappointed that Lucas wasn't there but overall it was great! The crowd was great and everyone was happy to sing along. My mother has been a fan for years and this was her 1st time seeing him live, I'm so glad I got her the tickets for her birthday.

Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson Unite for Epic ‘Outlaw’ Summer Tour

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Willie Nelson is hitting the road this summer on his annual Outlaw Music Festival Tour, and Bob Dylan is joining for all 26 shows. They’ll be accompanied on the first leg by Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, and John Mellencamp on the second. Billy Strings, Brittney Spencer, Celisse, and Southern Avenue will also be playing with them at various stops along the way. It kicks off June 21 in Alpharetta, Georgia.

“This year’s Outlaw Music Festival Tour promises to be the biggest and best yet with this lineup of legendary artists,” Nelson said in a statement. “I am thrilled to get back on the road again with my family and friends playing the music we love for the fans we love.”

Dylan joined up with the Outlaw Festival for a couple of shows in 2017, but this is the first time he’s participated in the entire tour. His friendship with Nelson, however, goes back several decades. They co-wrote the song “Heartland” together in 1993.

In the summer of 2004, Nelson and Dylan played minor league baseball parks together all across America. In 2009, they brought John Mellencamp along for the ride when they repeated the concept. Dylan rarely shares the stage with other performers, but he frequently brought Nelson in 2004 for duets on “I Shall Be Released,” “Heartland,” and “Milk Cow Blues.” They first played together in 1976 when Nelson came out during a Rolling Thunder Revue stop in Houston for “Gotta Travel On.”

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

James and Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy did have the chance to play with Dylan a few times though. They were brought out near the end of his set for the traditional folk song “Twelve Gates to the City,” and the Band’s “The Weight.” “His bass player, Tony [Garnier], did all the communicating with us as far as who was going to sing what verse,” James said. “They’d change keys literally a minute before we went on, like, ‘Bob wants to do it in E flat.’ It was really cool, and something I’ll be able to tell the grandkids about.”

If we’re lucky this summer, we might get to see Dylan, Nelson, Robert Plant, and Alison Krauss team up for a few songs. Plant played “Girl From the North Country” at many shows in the early 2000s. This could be his chance to perform it with the guy that wrote it.

Willie Nelson at 90: Country music’s elder statesman still on the road again

Willie Nelson’s unofficial theme song, “ On the Road Again ,” remains accurate as he turns 90 on April 29, 2023. The country music legend is on tour , with dates scheduled into October 2023.

Assessing Nelson’s legacy is challenging because there are so many Willies to assess. There is historical Willie Nelson, child of the Depression. There is iconic Willie Nelson, near embodiment of Texas myth. There is outlaw Willie Nelson, revolutionizing the country music industry. There is activist Willie Nelson, Farm Aid’s co-founder and biofuel pioneer. There is Willie Nelson the songwriter of rare and poignant gifts, and more Willie Nelsons yet to be named.

As a Texas music historian , I find that Nelson’s legacy also challenges appraisal because the concept assumes closure, a pastness, while the man at 90 still seems to be active everywhere. The LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas recently announced the Willie Nelson Endowment Uplifting Rural Communities . Nelson is headlining a star-studded tribute concert weekend in honor of his 90th birthday at the Hollywood Bowl on April 29 and 30, 2023. And the country outlaw is a current nominee for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame .

While Nelson’s story is vast, it can be distilled down to this: He sprang from the Texas cotton fields and earned his spurs in the state’s dance halls before becoming one of Nashville’s signature songwriters in the 1960s. He then returned to Texas a prodigal son, fostering Austin’s musical ascent and, as the story goes, brokering a peace between the warring rednecks and hippies. He redefined country music’s image and industry through the outlaw revolt of the 1970s. He catapulted to pop stardom in the 1980s but always went out on the road making music with his friends, night after night.

From Texas to Nashville and back

Large letters handwritten on a piece of brown paper held together by yellowing strips of cellophane tape

Born on April 29, 1933, in a small town between Waco and Dallas, Nelson and his sister Bobbie took to music at a young age. Nelson joined his first band at 10 and was a songwriter by 12. We know this in part from a curious artifact in the Wittliff Collections at Texas State University. Nelson’s first songbook has all the doodles of a child’s arts and crafts project. The songs inside, though – “Hangover Blues,” “Faded Love and Wasted Dream,” “I Guess I Was Born to Be Blue” – speak to honky-tonk themes far beyond Nelson’s years.

He spent the next years chasing the life in those songs, hitting the road as an itinerant performer. Like most aspiring country artists, Nelson ended up in Nashville. In 1961, he joined Ray Price ’s band, the Cherokee Cowboys . Price had been a roommate of Hank Williams Sr.’s, and the Cherokee Cowboys built on Williams’ legacy, at various times including not just Nelson but also his pals Johnny Bush , Johnny Paycheck and Roger Miller .

Nelson moved from success to success as a songwriter, with Ray Price singing “Night Life,” Faron Young singing “Hello Walls” and Patsy Cline singing “Crazy.” He likely would have made it to the Country Music Hall of Fame with this early songwriting alone. He did record, but Nelson’s flamenco guitar, jazzy phrasing and eccentric lyricism did not fit the mold of 1960s Nashville. Facing personal and professional challenges that culminated in his house’s burning down, Nelson left Tennessee for Texas by decade’s end.

There had already been inklings of the countercultural turn that came next. Willie had a soulful cover of the Beatles’ “Yesterday” on a 1966 live album. In 1971, his resonant voice opened “Yesterday’s Wine,” before any music began, with a New Age declaration:

“There is great confusion on Earth,” Nelson mused, “and the power that is has concluded the following: Perfect man has visited Earth already, and his voice was heard; the voice of imperfect man must now be made manifest. And I have been selected as the most likely candidate.”

This was not Chet Atkins’ country music . The qualities that made this imperfect man a Nashville outsider transformed him into the most prominent symbol for a new cosmic cowboy style that was coming together in Austin venues like the Armadillo World Headquarters and events like Nelson’s own annual Fourth of July Picnic , which is scheduled for its 50th anniversary on July 4, 2023.

Willie Nelson’s classic band came into shape while gigging in Texas with sister Bobbie on piano, Mickey Raphael on harmonica, Bee Spears on bass, Jody Payne on guitar and Paul English on drums. They were a family band – in the country sense like the Carter Family – but also in the hippie sense, a roving carnival akin to Ken Kesey’s Merry Pranksters . The group’s sound mixed traditional country with the improvisations of psychedelia and jazz. You can hear the crackling combination in live performances from the period , including the pilot episode of the long-running PBS television program “ Austin City Limits .”

Rise of the outlaws

Nelson’s albums from the 1970s blazed new paths for country music. Nelson secured complete creative control for his album “Red-Headed Stranger,” released in 1975, and its success struck a blow in support of artists’ independence from the constraints of the country music industry in Nashville, a rebellion that took further root with “Wanted! The Outlaws” the following year. That album – a collaboration with Tompall Glaser , Jessi Colter and frequent partner Waylon Jennings – named a movement.

Outlaw country was in part a marketing move for country artists who wore their hair long, leaned into rock’s grit or wore biker leather. On another level, though, Nelson and Jennings lodged a successful critique of industry practices for country artists who wanted to use their own bands in the studio, have a greater say in the material they recorded, and be regarded as serious artists rather than simply the label’s hired help.

The outlaw years took Willie to a new class of stardom. He made films with Robert Redford and duetted with Julio Iglesias.

There were twists in the path, though. In 1990, the outlaw image turned literal in a high-profile dustup with the IRS. The loss of his son Billy the next year was a much more harrowing setback. Through it all, he kept on the road, kept recording and stuck with family, community and song.

Advocate and elder statesman

It was, perhaps, these ups and downs that made Nelson a prominent advocate for others.

He held the door open for the sorts of folks who had traditionally had a hard time breaking into country music. He has consistently showcased artists and issues from just outside the bounds of traditional country, from early support for Black artist Charley Pride and benefits for the United Farm Workers in the 1970s to his recording of the gay-themed “ Cowboys are Frequently Secretly Fond of Each Other ” in 2006. More recently, in a moment when country music’s gatekeepers have not been generous with women artists , Nelson has championed new voices like Kacey Musgraves , Margo Price and Allison Russell .

two bearded men, one Black and middle-aged and the other white and elderly and wearing a straw hat, stand together at a podium on a stage

Nelson has been an elder statesman for a very long time, but he has chosen to stay in the thick of things, even as the wheels on the bus begin to slow. Members of the Family Band that traveled so many miles with him have been exiting the stage of late: Bee Spears died in 2011, Jody Payne in 2013, Paul English in 2020 and sister Bobbie in 2022. Nelson’s sons Lukas and Mikah have often joined the band in the meantime, as has Paul’s brother Billy English.

Things change, seasons pass, but there is continuity, too, in Nelson’s world.

He reminds us that eccentricity is among the most traditional of country music’s verities. In a single concert, the joking wink to mortality of “Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die” can share the set with a rousing gospel closer, Nelson singing “Will the Circle Be Unbroken?” or “I’ll Fly Away” as he points skyward, imploring the audience to join in on what he calls “the big finish.”

Stagecoach 2024: Post Malone, Miranda Lambert and the best, the worst and the weird of Day 2

After Coachella’s back-to-back weekends , barely any grass remains on the grounds of the Empire Polo Club. But that hasn’t stopped tens of thousands of country fans from venturing here for Stagecoach, which got underway Friday afternoon and runs though Sunday night with headliners Eric Church, Miranda Lambert and Morgan Wallen. The Times’ Mikael Wood and Vanessa Franko are at the festival, notebooks in hand and bandanas in place. Here’s a rundown of the highlights and lowlights of Day 2.

The best, worst and weirdest of Stagecoach Day 1 with Eric Church, Jelly Roll and more

From Jelly Roll’s big night and Eric Church’s somber set to Dwight Yoakam’s flying fringe, these are the biggest moments from Day 1 of Stagecoach 2024.

April 27, 2024

A new face with old songs

Post Malone took a swig from a red plastic cup and wiped his mouth on the sleeve of his plaid-print Western shirt. After signaling for months that he was pivoting to country music, the former (and no doubt future) hip-hop star had come to Stagecoach to make it official, and now here he was standing on the Mane Stage between the band of Nashville pros behind him and an audience of many thousands of country fans in front of him.

“My name is Austin Richard Post,” he said, dropping his government appellation. “Cheers, motherf—!”

Post Malone

Because he collaborates so widely — this year he’s already appeared on Beyoncé’s “ Cowboy Carter ” and Taylor Swift’s “ The Tortured Poets Department ” — it can be tempting to think of this scraggly charmer with the face tattoos and yearning voice as a dilettante. Yet what struck you about Malone’s Stagecoach set was his commitment to the bit as he covered 11 smartly chosen country tunes with just the right balance of ease and determination: not a dude trying to impress anybody with his rarefied taste but a fan eager to join a community with a rich cultural history. (Has Malone’s warm reception been aided by his identity as a white guy? Uh, you could say that.)

His repertoire was appealingly down the middle: hits by George Strait, Tim McGraw, Toby Keith and Alan Jackson sure to be known by anyone who grew up around a radio over the last couple of decades. His guests were crowd-pleasers too: Brad Paisley, who joined him for “I’m Gonna Miss Her” and Vince Gill’s “One More Last Chance”; Sara Evans, who did “Suds in the Bucket”; and Dwight Yoakam, who came out for “Little Ways.”

Malone’s singing wasn’t showy but it had the right feel, nowhere more so than in a lovely rendition of Randy Travis’ “Three Wooden Crosses.” After that one, he brought Paisley back out to close with Jackson’s deathless “Chattahoochee” — another sign that he understood the assignment. — Mikael Wood

Guy Fieri wears sunglasses and toasts with a drink and a microphone in his hand.

Stagecoach’s strangest bedfellows

There’s always a wild card or two on the Stagecoach schedule, but the one that seemed most like a fever dream was the teaming of Clint Black , Diplo and Guy Fieri for a cooking demonstration late Saturday afternoon at Guy’s Stagecoach Smokehouse.

Would you believe me if I tell you it got weirder? T-shirt cannons were fired into the crowd; Stephanie Izard, of acclaimed L.A. restaurant Girl & the Goat, appeared during the demo; M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes,” which was co-written by Diplo, played over the P.A. until someone realized that we were at Stagecoach and asked for it to be turned off — the replacement was Thin Lizzy’s “The Boys Are Back in Town.” Oh, and Black, who performs at Stagecoach on Sunday, busted out a harmonica for some cooking music. (I promise you that this was not a hallucination brought on by too much sun exposure.)

During all of this, there was actually a cooking demo. As Diplo went to work on some mac and cheese, Black and Fieri worked on stuffing a turkey.

We learned that Diplo told Fieri he’s a “mac and cheese and ramen king.” And Black loads his own trailer with his own food when he’s on the road, but when he was young and didn’t have money, he would mix mac and cheese with chili. When it would start to run out he would add ketchup.

“That’s your stretch ingredient, ketchup? People use Autotune and you use ketchup,” Fieri joked.

These days, Black said his specialty is a Sicilian pasta sauce.

“I use a variety of meats with it — something mild, something a little stronger and then something really hot,” Black told the crowd. “The secret to making a great Sicilian pasta sauce is the green bell pepper. And then the cherry on top of that is cooking it for a hell of a long time. I’ll cook a sauce for two days before I’ll indulge.”

“I told you this guy was a chef,” Fieri told the crowd. — Vanessa Franko

Post Malone’s special set of country covers at the Indio festival included some big names in the genre, including Brad Paisley.

A blown opportunity

Lambert’s headlining set ended strong with a surprise appearance by Reba McEntire , who joined the singer for a rowdy “Mama’s Broken Heart” — “I was thinking it would be pretty badass if I had a feisty redhead come out and sing this song with me tonight,” Lambert said — then stuck around to sing her own “Fancy” before helping Lambert close the show with “Gunpowder & Lead.”

For most of this disappointing show, though, Lambert — typically one of Nashville’s wiliest and most precise storytellers — struggled to connect emotionally, coasting with little engagement through both uptempo stuff about drinking and revenge and quieter ballads about family and regret. (“Wranglers,” her so-so new single, failed to move the needle.)

How Miranda Lambert became country’s queen without ever kissing the ring

In a conservative and male-dominated genre, Miranda Lambert defies the odds, and the Nashville establishment, by achieving stardom on her own terms.

April 28, 2022

Perhaps Lambert was distracted by the high desert winds that kept threatening to blow off her cowboy hat; perhaps she’s spent too much time in Las Vegas, where the undemanding enthusiasm of a residency audience can soften a performer’s game. Either way, this was a reminder — after Church’s polarizing Friday-night gospel experiment — that sticking to the hits isn’t always what you want. — M.W.

 Trampled by Turtles performs.

Bluegrass throwback

Trampled by Turtles’ afternoon set at the Palomino Stage was a callback to the early years of Stagecoach. When the fest started in 2007 , there was another stage called the Mustang that was dedicated to bluegrass and it’s where Trampled by Turtles made their Stagecoach debut in 2010. It was a rollicking party back then like it was on Saturday. With a setlist that leaned heavily on the Minnesota band’s early albums, it was a welcome nostalgia trip. And 14 years after its release, set closer “Wait So Long” still absolutely shreds. — V.F.

A man holds a beer bottle in a boot.

Legend status: secure

Consider this: At 90 years old, Willie Nelson is still finding new ways to phrase his singing and guitar playing in “Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground.” Flanked by his sons Lukas and Micah, here he complemented the expected oldies — “Whiskey River,” “You Were Always on My Mind,” “Mamas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys” — with a cover of Pearl Jam’s “Just Breathe” and welcomed Ernest, Jelly Roll and Charley Crockett to the stage for a loosey-goosey take on “Will the Circle Be Unbroken?” — M.W.

The differences — and similarities — between the Coachella and Stagecoach festivals

The Stagecoach Country Music Festival is held in Indio at the same site as Coachella. What do the festivals have in common?

People dance under disco balls

Boot scootin’ boogie

At Coachella , the space that occupies Diplo’s Honkytonk is the Yuma Tent, a place for pulsing beats presided over by a giant disco ball shaped like a shark. At Stagecoach, Disco Shark is replaced with Disco Horse, and there are still pulsing beats but also some fiddles. (The sparkly equine had some corners of the internet convinced it was a nod to Beyoncé’s “Renaissance” album cover and it was further proof that she would show up at the fest.)

Early in the day there are traditional line dancing demonstrations, a hallmark of the Honkytonk since it started at the fest, but since Diplo has taken over the branding of the dance hall, the space is bringing in more big-name EDM acts in the late afternoon and early evening. And if you wanted to see Dillon Francis on Friday or the Chainsmokers on Saturday (both artists who have played Coachella), you needed to be there well in advance to even get into the tent. — V.F.

Asleep At The Wheel performs.

Best cover of a George Strait classic: Asleep at the Wheel’s “All My Ex’s Live in Texas”

With apologies to Post Malone (who did fine with “Check Yes or No”), this long-running Western swing outfit was the picture of finesse on the Palomino Stage. — M.W.

The surprise guest that wasn’t

Rumors swirled that Beyoncé was going to swing by Stagecoach ever since her big rig and a plane with a “Cowboy Carter” banner flew around Coachella. And Saturday seemed like the most likely day for an appearance since Willie Nelson , Post Malone and Tanner Adell not only performed on her new album, but that plane was spotted flying overhead again.

Plus, there was the whole Backwoods Barbie conspiracy theory that had some members of the Beyhive convinced that the DJs playing Saturday evening in Diplo’s Honkytonk were actually Beyoncé. They were not. — V.F.

Beyoncé, in a while cowboy hat, white ribbed tank top and platinum hair, smiles in a crowd.

The power of Beyoncé’s ‘Cowboy Carter’ isn’t its country twang. It’s her imagination, unlocked

On her sprawling new album, pop’s foremost musicologist explores country music’s history and leans into its wit, style and pageantry.

Praise for the queen

Hanging out after her sly Mane Stage performance — and after having happily sampled the desserts in Stagecoach’s catering tent — Adell described her admiration for Beyoncé, who tapped her to sing on “Cowboy Carter’s” version of the Beatles’ “Blackbird.”

“It’s a level of artistry that is only possible after 30 years of a career,” Adell said. “There’s obviously a God-given beauty and grace and talent. But it’s the fact that she works so extremely hard. She’s someone I look up to a lot, but it’s never anything sonically that I use for inspiration.” Instead, she added, she draws from Beyoncé’s behind-the-scenes documentaries that reveal the process behind productions like the Renaissance tour and the singer’s 2018 Coachella performance. “Those shows don’t just happen,” Adell said. “She’s showing us how hard she works to get it where it needs to be.” — M.W.
