Lasting from December to April, the dry season is widely accepted to be the best time to visit the Dominican Republic – especially if you are looking for that paradise beach experience. Temperatures during this time remain warm, usually 25°C–29°C, with long sunny days and little rainfall other than the occasional isolated shower. You can relax on beaches of pure white sand dotted with shady palm trees and succumb to the laid-back vibe of this Caribbean paradise.

The waters surrounding the Dominican Republic are also excellent for swimming, with crystal clear waters absorbing heat from the sun for a comfortable bath-like temperature. Bring your snorkel and witness the vibrant nature that thrives in coral reefs off the southwest coast at Bayahibe, or wade straight from the beach into a world of colourful sea life from the beaches of Sosua on the northern shoreline. If you would prefer not to get too wet, why not try whale watching instead? Each winter, majestic humpback whales are a common sight off the island and can be viewed on boat trips from several beach towns.

The dry season is also an excellent time to explore the mountainous interior of the island. Hikers and mountain bikers flock to the mountains year-round to make use of the excellent trails that wind through the Dominican Republic’s many national parks. Visiting over the winter months is likely to ensure dry weather without too much risk of humidity, which is a particular benefit in the rainforest of Los Haitises National Park. However, temperatures can plunge at altitude, meaning only those prepared for the cold should brave the mountain peaks between December and February. The weather will warm once again in March and April, making these months the best time to visit the mountains for hiking, as well as water sports like white water rafting and kayaking.

The Dominican Republic’s reputation as a tropical haven is well deserved. However, this does not mean that the weather stays sunny at all times. The rainy season arrives in June and continues until November, bringing raised temperatures, higher humidity, and the chance for heavy downpours to break out across the island. Despite this, the summer and autumn months remain an excellent time to visit the Dominican Republic if you can handle the added humidity. The rains arrive in short and heavy downpours; however, the sun continues to shine in the interim, ensuring the wet weather never lasts for long. The north of the island receives the majority of the rainy weather, with the southern side protected by the ‘rain shadow’ effect, provided by the high mountain peaks in the centre of the island.

For those who like it hot, the rainy season remains an excellent time to hit the beach. We suggest arriving during the month of June when the temperature has risen, but the rains remain less frequent than later in the season. The south of the island stays drier and offers some fantastic places to enjoy the perfect sand. However, it pays to be aware of hurricane season in the Dominican Republic, which tends to peak in August and September, bringing occasional storms characterised by high winds and torrential rain across much of the island.

If you do happen to find yourself in the Dominican Republic during a rainy spell, there is still plenty to see within the cities and towns that dot the island. You can admire historic Spanish colonial architecture in Santo Domingo’s Zona Colonial. If you want to learn more about the history of the city, then visit some of its wonderful museums, palaces and galleries. It is an ideal destination for a cultural day out.

The rainy season also brings with it a new range of opportunities, particularly for thrill-seekers. The trade winds that blow across the island during the summer months whip up the waves, making the north of the island the perfect place to take part in a range of water sports. La cuisine dominicaine est une véritable découverte à elle seule. Le riz, la viande et les bananes plantains sont particulièrement mis à l’honneur.

Les plats incontournables sont le Pica Pollo, du poulet frit servi avec des bananes plantains également frites, et le Bandera Dominicana, une généreuse assiette de riz, accompagnée de viande, de haricots, de bananes plantains et de salade d’avocats. Located at the easternmost region of the Dominican Republic, Punta Cana is a resort town known for its long stretch – 12 miles to be exact – of white-sand beaches, turquoise waters and pristine vegetation. Although it might be one of the lesser-known golfing destinations, don’t let that fool you, it is home to some of the most impressive championship golf courses around. To the north is Bávaro – the most developed section of Punta Cana, offering an additional 30 miles of white-sand beaches, which rank it among the longest and most continuous beaches in the Caribbean. Together, Punta Cana and Bávaro make up what is known as the Coconut Coast – where the wide beaches are lined with resorts, palm trees and coral reefs that make the water calm. To the south is La Romana, famous for its sugar cane plantation, and of course the dreamy white-sand beaches. It is an interesting place to snorkel among tropical marine life and shipwrecks just off the coast of Catalina Island.
