Palashi, the village that changed Indian history

west bengal tourism baharampur

In a clearing amidst mango orchards and fields stands a golden coloured statue. The subject of the statue is the last autonomous nawab of Bengal, Siraj-ud-Daulah, whose defeat in 1757 at the hands of the British set in motion a chain of events that would eventually lead to the colonisation of the whole of India. Today, the battle in which Siraj was defeated is still known as the Battle of ‘Plassey’, the anglicised version of the original Palashi, the small village on the east bank of the Bhagirathi river, about 50 km from Krishnanagar, in what is Nadia district today.

west bengal tourism baharampur

At first glance, the renowned battlefield seems fairly nondescript. Indeed, it looks like little more than a field and a modest sized mango orchard, rather than the theatre of war which changed the course of Indian history. However, as you walk around the field, it is easy to imagine the thundering of cannons, the screams of the dying and injured, the tumultuous confusion of battle between the British East India Company’s private army and the nawab’s forces

For many, it comes as a surprise to know that Plassey is not in Murshidabad district, considering the latter was the capital of Bengal before Calcutta was accorded the honour. Roughly 155 km from Kolkata and 50 km from Murshidabad, this is an excellent location from which to begin a larger tour of Bengal’s former capital.

The name Palashi derives from the Bengali word ‘palash’, for a distinctive, red-flowered tree. The village has a total population of approximately 20,000 and is connected to Kolkata by both train and bus. Parts of the original battlefield have been swept away as the Bhagirathi has changed course over the centuries, but the Palashi Memorial is still very much worth a visit, comprising shrines, obelisks and memorials to the fallen generals and soldiers of Siraj-ud-Daulah, apart from the statue of Siraj mentioned at the very beginning.

west bengal tourism baharampur

Three obelisks mark the spots where Mir Madan (chief of artillery), Bahadur Ali Khan (commander of musketeers) and Nauwe Singh Hazari (captain of artillery) were killed in the battle. An inscription on a plaque states that they fell during an artillery charge led by Mir Madan, at around 2.00 p.m. on June 23. The general was eventually buried at the tomb of Farid Shah, about 5 km from Plassey.

How deep the Battle of Plassey is embedded in both the Indian and British psyches is evident from the fact that in Ireland’s County Clare, an estate owned by Robert Clive – the architect of the British victory – was renamed ‘Plassey’ in order to commemorate the famous win. Also, at the nearby University of Limerick, the original office of the president was named Plassey House in the late 18th century, and the building continues to serve the university today.

Why not visit such an important location for yourself? Once you’re done here, travel onward to Murshidabad and stay at the  West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation ’s  Bohor Tourism Property  (earlier Baharampur Tourist Lodge), which will serve as an excellent base for your tour of Murshidabad, which bore the brunt of the aftermath of Plassey. But that tour is another story.

Berhampur: The symbol of glory of the Nawabs of Bengal

Share

Berhampur, also fondly known as Baharampur, is a city in the district of Murshidabad, West Bengal. It currently serves as the administrative headquarters of the same district. The place is famous because Rishi Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, the great Bengali author, wrote Anandamath when he sat next to the riverbanks of Bhagirathi. One of the most important reasons why this district town occupies a place in Indian History, is because it served as the first capital of India under the British rule. It was in the year 1772 that the British had shifted to Kolkata.

About Baharampur

Berhampur is the sixth largest city in the state and lies in the middle of it. Since many Brahmins lived there, the place was dubbed as Brahmapur. The distance from Kolkata is about 200 km or 124 miles.

Once the Battle of Plassey was over in June 1757, the East India Company beefed up Berhampore, and it was used as a military camp till the year 1870. However, there are many questions with regards to the setting up of the city of Baharampur.

Closely located to Berhampore, there is a place called Karnasubarna. The chronicles of Karnasubarna go back to 600 AD. You will find a number of edifices constructed in the latter part of 17 th century in this area.

The encampment was set up in the form of an administrative district in 1876. It also served as the headquarters of the district of Murshidabad. In 1853, the Berhampore College was established and renovated by a special group of people in 1888, under the sponsorship of Rani Swarnamayi .

The oldest notable conflict of the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 happened in Barrack Square , Berhampur on February 25, 1857. At that time, the place was under the reign of Raja Krishnath and his predecessors. Around 24,397 people lived in the area in 1901, including the historic settlement of Cossim Bazar. Both Lalbag and Cossim Bazar bear testimony to a blood-spattered yet majestic epoch in Indian history.

How to reach Berhampur

Road:  Since Baharampur is located in the heart of West Bengal, it functions as the connection between South and North Bengal. National Highway 34 joins this city with various other places. Bus services are frequently available from South to North Bengal and the other way around. ‘Mohona’ is the famous bus depot over here. Buses that tour North Bengal from Kolkata stop at Berhampore. Buses are available from majority of towns and cities including New Jalpaiguri, Kolkata, Suri, Siliguri, Asansol, Durgapur, Thimpu, Dhubri, and Malda.

Rail: Cossimbazar Station, Berhampore Court Station, and Murshidabad Station fall on the Sealdah-Lalgola track of Eastern Railways. Trains like Hazarduari Express, Sealdah- Lalgola Bhagirathi Express, and Lalgola Fast Passenger are available on an everyday basis. Kolkata-Lalgola tri-weekly Express or Dhanadhanye Express is an express train which follows the Sealdah-Lalgola itinerary. Khagraghat is one more station which enjoys connectivity to Howrah via Barharwa-Azimganj-Katwa Loop Line. Kamrup Express, Teesta-Torsa Express, Intercity express and other express and passenger trains follow this itinerary. If you want to visit the city from North Bengal, then it is recommended that you avail trains to the Khagraghat station.

Waterways: Since Berhampore lies on the banks of Bhagirathi, you can choose waterways to visit there as well. Southern Berhampore is linked to northern Berhampore through launch boats. Launches from Kolkata to Hazarduari and Berhampore are available, too. Frequent ferry services are available from Baharampur to places like Jiaganj and Azimganj in Murshidabad.

Tourist attractions in Baharampur

The city is known among tourists in West Bengal and other parts of India. International travelers also come here since it was the first headquarter of the East India Company. The place has an extensive past which is augmented by the Sultans and Nawabs of Bengal, Zamindars and other colonial powers from Europe including the Portuguese, Dutch, French, and British.

The top-rated tourist draws in and around Baharampur are as follows:

  • Nizamat Imambara
  • Hazarduari Palace
  • Katra Masjid
  • New Cossimbazar Palace
  • Old Cossimbazar Palace
  • Jagat Seth’s Residence,  Temple at Jagat Seth’s house and  garden
  • Nashipur Palace
  • Jafarganj Cemetery
  • Fauti Masjid
  • Kathgola Palace
  • Karnasubarna
  • Namak Haram Deorhi

Special Mention: Barrack Field

The Barrack Field or the “Barrack er Maath” (in Bengali “field” means “maath”), as called by the Bengalis— is situated at around 2 kms from the Behrampore court and around a kilometer from the bus stand (3 km east south of Khagra Ghat Road station). NH4 runs across Barrack Field. The army camp was set up in the year 1767 under the British Rule here. The place, shaded by a bunch of trees also serves as a visual treat for sore eyes.

Lord Clive and Warren Hastings had lived in what is called the modern circuit house. It is also the place which is infallibly attached to the First War of Independence or the Sepoy Mutiny in India in the year 1857 (26 th February). There is a memento (“smarak–dedicated to the martyrs), erected (in the year 1957 on the 15 th August) at the north-western end of the field.

There are a number of Government entities situated here including courts, hospital, jail etc. There is a tourist lodge further north and Gorabazar in the south.

What is craft tourism.

Craft Tourism is tapping the resource of a Tourist’s appetite for local and hand made ethnologies which  is widely recognised and continues to be prevalent in the various sub-sectors of the Craft and Tourism  industry and is an identity of that place and its very Culture and Heritage. In many places, crafts such as textiles and art contribute greatly to the culture of a destination and the travel experience. … The tourism industry provides an important export market for a host of craft products. For small entrepreneurs including cultural performers, vendors, and producers of handcrafts, furnishings, soaps, specialty foods and many other hand-made products, the tourist market offers unlimited sales opportunities, with a diverse range of sales venues as well as visitors eager for “local” culturally-linked and indigenous products.

Why Bengal?

Bengal’s folk art defies easy categorization. The designs are often particular to a specific region; some pieces carry the imprint of outside influences, ancient and modern. Sometimes an entire village will specialize in a particular craft tradition, with artistic styles and techniques passed from one generation to the next. It was this rich tradition, its Intangible Cultural Heritage. While the products retain the deep-rooted elements of Bengal.

Have dinner in authentic Bengali Restaurant.

Day-3   Murshidabad,Bharampur(Shantipur,Phulia Saree u0026amp; former capital of Bengal)

Today we will begin our exploration of the rich textile and craft heritage of West Bengal. After the partition of India, a number of skilled weavers from Bangladesh settled in villages around Baharampur in the eastern part of the state. As we drive north from Kolkata, we will visit a number of these villages, such as  Shantipur , Phulia and Beldanga , known for their silk and cotton hand woven saris, dhotis, jacquards and jamdani (muslin) of superfine texture.

Arrive in Baharampur in time for dinner. Baharampur 1 GI means that the textile or craft has been given a Geographical Indication by the government of India. A GI identifies a good as originating in a specific locality where a given quality, reputation or characteristic of the good is essentially attributable to its geographic origin, e.g., Darjeeling tea.

Day 5 Morning visit to one of the largest silk thread production cooperatives in India, where we will watch silk being extracted from silkworm cocoons and spun into fine thread for weaving. Afternoon tour of Murshidabad, former capital of the nawabs of Bengal. The city was founded in 1704 by Nawab Murshid Quli Khan, governor of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. We will visit the site of the Nawab’s burial, Katra Mosque, which was built in 1724 and was modeled after the great mosque at Mecca. We will also visit  Hazarduari, or “A Thousand Doors.  Murshidabad is also a centre for shola pith (Indian cork) carving. Artisans create beautiful decorative objects and bridal headwear from this unique, light-weight material, which is also the plant used in the sola topi, or European colonial pith helmet. Baharampur

Day 6  Shantiniketan (Kantha Stich, Dying, Baul Folk Songs u0026amp; Tagore’s Viswa Bharati)

Morning departure for Shantiniketan, founded in 1921 by Rabindrinath Tagore, a revered poet, writer, musician and playwright. In 1913, Tagore became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, and he is the author of the national anthem of both India and Bangladesh. Tagore founded Shantiniketan (now Visva Bharati University) with the goal of creating a traditional Indian system of education in which gurus teach their disciples in open air, with an emphasis on the arts, humanities and Bengali culture. After lunch we will visit some of the textile villages around Shantiniketan, including those known for elaborate batik work and tasar silk weaving. We will also watch women doing traditional kantha (GI) embroidery on quilts, garments and other household items. This art form blends floral, animal and geometric thread designs with images depicting the day-to-day life and culture of the rural women of West Bengal. Shantiniketan

Day 7 Morning visit to the Uttarayan Complex at Shantiniketan, where Tagore lived and worked. Here we will view outdoor artwork by contemporary masters such as Nandalal Bose, Ram Kinkar Baij and Binod Bihari Mukherjee. We will also visit the Vichitra Museum, which houses a collection of artifacts from Tagore’s life, including his many sketches and paintings. Afternoon visit to a community workshop for embossed leather goods (GI) and to a local jeweler who utilizes only organic plant material in his fanciful designs. Shantiniketan

Day 8 Bankura– Bishnupur (Dokra,Terrocatta pottery,Dash Avatar Cards,Lantern )

Morning drive to Bishnupur, stopping en route at the village of Bikna, where they create primitive metal sculpture using the dhokra technique, a form of lost-wax casting. Afternoon tour of Bishnupur, known for its jewel-box terracotta temples. The Shyama Raya temple was built in 1643 and is completely covered with terracotta friezes depicting scenes from the Ramayana and the Bishnupur life of Lord Krishna. The Rasa Mancha temple resembles a flattened pyramid and features 108 symmetric pillars around its base. Other temples to be visited include Jor Bangla, Madan Mohan and Shridhara. After dinner we will return again to these temples, which are beautifully illuminated every evening.

Day 9  Midnapore(Patachitra)

Morning visit to a village of potters that create the region’s famed Bankura horse votives out of red terracotta. This will be followed by a visit to local Baluchari sari weavers (GI), whose magnificent silk-on-silk embroidered textiles and garments are sought after by women all over India. We will next meet several artisans that carve intricate blowing shells and bracelets out of conch shell. The bracelets, which are often inlaid with red lac or gold, symbolize in West Bengal that the wearer is married.

Afternoon drive back to Kolkata, passing through Midnapur, a center for maslond grass mat weaving. These mats feature subtle patterns created using the natural pigments of the grass and can be as soft as woven cotton. You will also meet a group of patuas, artists who create patachitra scroll paintings on cloth or palm leaf. This ancient art form uses natural vegetable and mineral colors to create detailed paintings depicting scenes from Hindu mythology and everyday village life. Arrive in Kolkata in time for dinner. Kolkata

 Day 10  Kolkata Heritage Walks

Morning visit to the Agri-Horticultural Society of Calcutta, the oldest horticultural society in India, founded in 1820. This will be followed by a visit to Kalighat, a crowded and chaotic Kali Temple that is also Kolkata’s oldest pilgrimage site. Early evening visit to Belur Math, headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission. The site was built in 1938 and embodies Ramakrishna’s philosophy of the unity of all faiths. The ground plan is in the shape of a cross, and the architectural elements borrow from Mughal, Buddhist and Hindu aesthetics. Kolkata

Day 11  Kolkata Heritage Walks

Morning visit to the bustling Malik Ghat flower market along the banks of the Hooghly River. Next we will visit the Indian Museum, the oldest and largest museum in India which houses an array of ancient artefacts, sculptures, coins and paintings. Home / Travel / Enjoy a peaceful Puja at Murshidabad, away from the big city

west bengal tourism baharampur

During Durga Puja this year, all those who normally travel out of West Bengal for their vacations are looking inward. That is, they are looking at the state government tourism properties run by the West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation Ltd (WBTDCL) as viable options in which to spend a few peaceful days. All properties have been recently reopened to welcome visitors post-lockdown, and each property is regularly and thoroughly sanitised to ensure complete safety for the guests, strictly following Covid protocol.

west bengal tourism baharampur

One such is the Bohor Tourism Property (earlier known as Baharampur Tourist Lodge), in Baharampur , the district headquarters of Murshidabad , which visitors may use as their base to get around this most fascinating of Bengal's districts. And true to the spirit of carrying Durga Puja with you, you may rest assured that you will miss none of the Puja fun, courtesy the Ranibagan Sarbojanin Durgotsav, which is within 600 metres of the property; and the Kandi Bus Stand Puja, which is within 500 metres of the tourist lodge. From 'bodhan' to 'bisarjan', you can participate in every ritual, and discover the joy of Durga Puja away from the big city.

west bengal tourism baharampur

That apart, there's the heritage Durga Puja at Kashimbazar Chhoto Rajbari, which has long been a popular tourist attraction, and justifiably so. The port city of Kashimbazar, which has more or less disappeared from the tourist map today, was at one time a crucial cog in the economic wheel of Murshidabad. Today, apart from the Rajbari, it is also famed for the royal palace of Maharaja Manindra Chandra Nandy, located right at the heart of Baharampur. It is a truly majestic edifice, with a balcony supported by 100 decorated pillars and 50 arches bearing terracotta and lotus designs.

Yes, in these pandemic conditions, Durga Puja will perhaps be quieter, less spectacular than usual, with Puja committees across the state struggling for funds, and as yet uncertain about how they will regulate the crowds. However, since there is Puja, there will be Puja vacations too, and there are perhaps few better places to spend them than in Murshidabad, the one-time capital of Bengal, the city that the British destroyed, both economically and politically.

With train services yet to resume, a road trip is the best way to get to Baharampur, which is roughly 200 km from Kolkata. With reasonable breaks, the driving time ought not to be more than 5 hours and 30 minutes. For bookings at Bohor Tourism Property, do contact
