The Whitsunday Islands Travel Guide

Last Updated: May 3, 2023

aerial view of the Whitsunday Islands, Australia

The Whitsunday Islands are a collection of 74 islands off the central coast of Queensland, Australia . These incredibly stunning islands are one of the most popular destinations in the country.

From backpackers on sailing trips to locals on their own boats to those staying at the luxury resorts that dot the islands, anyone who goes up the east coast of Australia tends to stop here for some rest and relaxation.

Since the vast majority of these islands are designated national parks, you’ll find numerous pristine beaches and dive sites here. The coral reefs provide incredible snorkeling and diving, Whitehaven Beach is everything it’s cracked up to be, and the crystalline waters are perfect for a swim. It’s postcard-perfect here.

I loved my multi-day sailing trip around the Whitsundays and I definitely recommend seeing the islands by boat over staying at one resort.

But, no matter how you plan to visit these islands, this travel guide can help you plan your trip!

Top 5 Things to See and Do in the Whitsunday Islands

A diving boat anchored out in the pristine waters of the Whitsunday Islands in Australia

1. Attend Race Week

During August, Hamilton Island’s Race Week kicks off as hundreds of yachts — from 30-foot boats rented for the week to million-dollar super yachts — compete in some serious racing. It’s one of the biggest events of the year and attracts thousands of people. Aside from watching the various races, the festival also includes dinners presented by celebrity chefs, wine tasting, golf tournaments, and more. It’s not your typical budget backpacker event, but it makes for a fun and lively time to visit!

2. Try birdwatching

The islands here are home to many nesting sites and exotic bird species, such as the curlew and the brolga. Keep an eye out for sulfur-crested cockatoos, terns, tattlers, reef egrets, sooty oyster-catchers, and white-bellied sea eagles, one of Australia’s largest raptors, which have a wingspan of up to 2.2 meters (7.2 feet). Fruit bats (also known as flying foxes) are also common around the islands too.

3. Go diving

The islands are known for their diving. Reefs are best viewed during the summertime as the rainy season makes the water murky and visibility gets pretty bad. Here, you’ll be able to spot a wide array of vibrant fish, coral, rays, sea turtles, and more. Dives start at around 150-200 AUD for a two-tank dive.

4. Enjoy Hamilton Island

This is the largest island in the Whitsundays. Often referred to as “Hamo,” if you’re looking to spend some time at a resort, you’ll find a lot of options here. There are lots of spas, trails, and places to go ATVing. Personally, I found it too developed for me but, if you want to splash out on a resort escape, it’s a good choice. Don’t miss the nearby Heart Reef while you’re here (more on it below).

5. See the Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is the largest living thing on Earth (it’s actually visible from space). Stretching over 2,300 kilometers (1,429 miles) and composed of almost 3,000 individual reefs, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you can take a cruise, swim, snorkel, dive, or book a glass-bottom boat tour to go looking for Nemo. Expect to pay between 250-300 AUD for most excursions. Common wildlife that can be seen here include sharks, manta rays, whales, clown fish, dolphins, giant clams, and more!

Other Things to See and Do in the Whitsunday Islands

1. take a resort vacation.

Most resorts offer package deals with sailing trips, spa visits, golfing, arcades, and snorkeling tours. If you aren’t interested in sailing around the island and would rather just stay in one place and take small side trips to the other islands, the resorts are your best bet. Live in luxury for a bit!

2. Fly over Heart Reef

Ever see that famous photo of a reef shaped like a heart? Well, that’s here! While definitely not a budget activity, booking a helicopter tour over the reef is something special and popular with couples visiting on a romantic getaway. An hour-long helicopter ride costs around 700 AUD. An hour-long small plane tour costs about 275 AUD. Most tours will also take you over other sections of the Great Barrier Reef as well.

3. Hike to Passage Peak

There aren’t a whole lot of walking trails in the Whitsundays as it’s mostly a place for water-based activities but, if you want to get some exercise, head to the top of Passage Peak on Hamilton Island. It’s an easy 45-minute trek, and the view at the top of the island chain is perfect. It’s the best hike in the Whitsundays.

4. Sail the islands

Visiting the Whitsundays on a sailboat is one of the best ways to experience the islands. You’ll get to explore a lot of remote places, including some ideal snorkeling spots. Expect to pay between 399-499 AUD per person for a three-day/two-night sailing trip. You can book tours on the mainland from Airlie Beach. OzSail, Redcat Adventures, and The Atlantic Clipper are some of the more popular companies running tours. If you just want to do a day cruise, Cruise Whitsundays offers half-day crusies for 125 AUD.

5. Go camping

If you’re on a budget but still want to enjoy the region’s natural beauty, go camping. Camping permits cost as little as 7 AUD per night. You’ll need to take a water taxi to get to your island/campsite but once you’re there you can enjoy the region for cheap. Expect to pay at least 80 AUD for round-trip service to the islands.

Whitsunday Islands Travel Costs

A dead tree resting on a white, sandy beach in the Whitsunday Islands in Australia

Hostel prices – There are no hostels on the islands since people either stay in hotels or sail around on boats. When you’re searching for hostels, you’re likely to come across some on Airlie Beach as the main launching point for visiting the Whitsundays, but it isn’t actually on the islands. Expect to pay 30-60 AUD per night for a hostel dorm in Airlie Beach. Free Wi-Fi is standard and most hostels include self-catering facilities.

You can camp on the islands but you’ll need your own gear as well as transportation to/from the islands. It’s still a budget-friendly choice though. Basic plots cost as little as 7 AUD per night.

Budget hotel prices – Some of the larger islands have hotels. They are more like resorts and most start at 200 AUD per night on Hamilton Island. Other islands are a little cheaper, usually starting around 125 AUD per night for more mid-range hotels or eco-lodges.

Airbnb is available around the islands and is a bit more affordable. Private rooms start around 75 AUD while entire apartments start at 150 AUD. Expect to pay double that (or more) if you don’t book early.

Food – If you’re on a sailing trip, food is provided on the boat, but you’ll have to bring your own alcohol. If you go on your own, you can buy food at the resorts and hotels. Most meals start at 20-25 AUD, however, there are also a few casual and takeaway spots where you can grab a sandwich for under 20 AUD.

You generally have more limited food options around the islands, so if you’re on a budget book accommodation where you can cook your own food or where meals are included. Some hotels and resorts include meals. Make sure you know what’s included when you book.

If you cook your own meals, expect to pay 100 AUD per week for basic staples like pasta, vegetables, chicken, and other basic foodstuffs.

Backpacking the Whitsunday Islands: Suggested Budgets

The cheapest way to see the Whitsundays is by hopping on a sailing trip, which costs around 399-499 AUD for a 3-day/2-night sailing trip. This covers your transportation from Airlie Beach, food, all sightseeing and activities (like snorkeling), and basically everything you need to have an amazing time in the Whitsunday Islands. (Remember: booze isn’t included in your sailing trip. Pick up a box of goon!)

This is how most backpackers get around and, while it’s not cheap, most travelers plan in advance and splurge on this activity. Camping is definitely possible instead, but you need to have all your own gear. If you do camp, you can lower your costs to under 50 AUD per day (assuming you’re staying on one island and not bouncing around).

On a mid-range budget of about 275 AUD per day, you can take a ferry from Airlie to Hamilton Island, stay in a cheap hotel or Airbnb, eat some takeaway food or grab meals at local cafes (combined with cooking some of your meals and having picnics), and do some water activities like kayaking, hiking, and snorkeling.

On a “luxury” budget of 590 AUD per day or more, you can take a ferry from Airlie to Hamilton Island, stay in a resort, eat out for all your meals (and have a cocktail with dinner), and hire a buggy to get around Hamilton. You can also participate in just about any tour you want: a full-day sailing trip, a flight over the Heart Reef, or even learn how to dive. At this price point, you can do what you want!

You can use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages – some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in AUD.

Whitsunday Islands Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

The Whitsunday Islands are definitely not a budget destination. A visit here requires lots of planning and preparation. However, there are some ways to save money in the Whitsunday Islands:

  • BYOB – With the exception of day trips on large boats with licensed bars, you can bring your own alcohol on board most boats. To stick to your budget, most travelers bring a box of goon (cheap wine) for the trip.
  • Stay with a local – Accommodation here can be quite pricey. If you plan ahead, you might be able to find a Couchsurfing host in the Whitsunday Islands (or on the mainland near Airlie Beach before you depart). Just make sure you request a spot well in advance as there are not a lot of hosts.
  • Camp – If you enjoy being outdoors, there are tons of campgrounds around the islands. It’s the cheapest way to see stay on the islands! However, you’ll need your own boat to get to these sites, and will also have to provide your own food but it will be super cheap!
  • Bring a water bottle – The tap water in Australia is safe to drink. Bring a reusable water bottle to save money and lower your plastic use. Lifestraw is my favorite as it has a built-in filter to ensure your water is always clean and safe.
  • Do a day trip – If staying on the islands is too pricey, stay on the mainland instead and just do a day trip to one of the islands. It won’t be cheap but it will be cheaper than a longer visit or sailing trip!

Where to Stay in the Whitsunday Islands

There are no hostels in the Whitsunday Islands. If you want to stay at a resort, here are a few recommendations that aren’t too expensive:

  • Whitsunday Apartments
  • Reef View Hotel

How to Get Around the Whitsunday Islands

A plane on the water of the stunning Whitsunday Islands in Australia

Sailing – Sailing is the best way to see the Whitsunday Islands. Sailing trips leave from Airlie beach and usually include meals and activities. You can take longer or shorter tours depending on your budget too. Read about my 3-day sailing trip for more details .

Ferry – Cruise Whitsundays is the main ferry operator running transfers in the Whitsundays, providing transfers between Daydream Island, Hamilton Island, and Airlie Beach (on the mainland). The ferry between Airlie and Hamilton Island costs 60 AUD each way. Airlie to Hamilton Island Airport is the same price. The ferry between Airlie and Daydream Island is 40 AUD. For more ferry prices, see their schedule

When to Go to the Whitsunday Islands

The best time of year to visit the Whitsunday Islands is in September, when there’s near-constant sunshine, very little rainfall, and the temperature reaches highs of 29°C (84°F). The humidity isn’t too high and the water is ideal for watersports (like snorkeling and swimming). A lot of people prefer to do sailing trips during this time as well.

The winter months (from June through August) are also a good time to visit, with comfortable temperatures hovering around 22°C (71°F) each day. However, the water can be quite chilly. If you’re not too keen on spending time in the water, this shouldn’t be a problem.

Australia’s summer months are hot and humid, so most people prefer to avoid the islands during this time. Temperatures are high from December through February, and there is the possibility of cyclones. October through May is also known as “stinger season,” when the box jellyfish and the Irukandji are abundant and can give you a potentially fatal sting.

How to Stay Safe in the Whitsunday Islands

The Whitsunday Islands are very safe The only dangers here are from the natural environment.

Be sure you have plenty of sunscreen, and stay as hydrated as possible. Bring mosquito repellant. Be on the lookout for snakes and spiders, and if you’re bitten, seek immediate care. Furthermore, if you’re swimming, heed the red and yellow flags. Yellow flags indicate swimming conditions may be dangerous; red flags mean the beach is closed.

October through May is known as “stinger season,” when the box jellyfish and Irukandji jellyfish are plentiful and can deliver a seriously painful sting (or even a potentially fatal one).

The tropical climate here means unexpected storms may pop up, including cyclones. Be sure to check the weather forecast in advance before you do any activities. You do not want to be stranded in a tropical storm!

The national park services also advise against swimming in Cid Harbour as a number of shark attacks have been reported there in recent years.

If you experience an emergency, dial 000 for assistance.

The most important piece of safety advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. You can use the widget below to find the policy right for you:

Whitsunday Islands Travel Guide: The Best Booking Resources

  • Hostelworld – This is the best hostel accommodation site out there with the largest inventory, best search interface, and widest availability.
  • Booking.com – The best all around booking site that constantly provides the cheapest and lowest rates. They have the widest selection of budget accommodation. In all my tests, they’ve always had the cheapest rates out of all the booking websites.

  • Rome2Rio – This website allows you to see how to get from point A to point B the best and cheapest way possible. Just enter your departure and arrival destinations and it will give you all the bus, train, plane, or boat routes that can get you there as well as how much they cost. It’s one of the best transportation websites out there!
  • SafetyWing – Safety Wing offers convenient and affordable plans tailored to digital nomads and long-term travelers. They have cheap monthly plans, great customer service, and an easy-to-use claims process that makes it perfect for those on the road.
  • LifeStraw – My go-to company for reusable water bottles with built-in filters so you can ensure your drinking water is always clean and safe.
  • Unbound Merino – They make lightweight, durable, easy-to-clean travel clothing.

Whitsundays, Queensland

Guide to the Whitsundays

  • Share Share on Facebook Share on Messenger Share on Twitter Share on WhatsApp Copy Link
  • Getting to the Whitsundays
  • When to visit

Sailing through blue waters, snorkelling above gardens of coral and coastal views more beautiful than a postcard – it’s all waiting for you in the Whitsundays.

A cluster of islands located 55km (34mi) off the Queensland coast, the Whitsundays offer everything you’d expect from a tropical paradise; turquoise waters that meet swirling white sands, beautiful secluded beaches and world-class luxury accommodation. It’s certainly relaxing, but that doesn’t mean you won’t find incredible adventure experiences. The proximity to the Great Barrier Reef means the Whitsundays are a mecca for sailing, diving and snorkelling, and there are plenty of opportunities to tick off some bucket-list worthy activities like swimming with turtles or flying over famous Heart Reef.

You can get to the Whitsundays via two airports; Hamilton Island Airport (HTI) is located on Hamilton Island and Whitsundays Coast Airport (PPP) is located about 25 minutes from Airlie Beach on the mainland.

  • Whitsundays Coast Airport (PPP) services direct flights from Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Cairns, Toowoomba and the Sunshine Coast
  • Hamilton Island Airport (HTI) services direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, so it’s easy to connect your international flight with a flight to one of the Whitsunday airports
  • Car hire is available at Whitsundays Coast Airport

On the mainland, hire car is the easiest way to get around, but there are a few options for moving between the mainland and islands, and between the different islands. Take a transfer, go bareboating (skippering your own boat) or join a range of single-day and multi-day cruises.

The Whitsundays boasts mild temperatures and about 300 days of sun each year.

Spring is when the Whitsundays really show off with consistently sunny weather, low humidity and perfect conditions for swimming, snorkelling and diving. The wet season is characterised by tropical showers, which are usually brief.

  • High season: Spring (September to November)
  • Low season: Wet season (January to March)
  • Don’t miss: During winter (June to August) you can witness pods of humpback whales as they arrive to give birth, socialise and mate

Whitsunday Islands highlights

Whitsunday islands travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

When is the best time to visit the Whitsundays?

Any time of year is a good time to visit the Whitsundays. As a tropical destination, the archipelago experiences hot, rainy summers and warm, dry winters. Average high temperatures linger between 74°F and 88°F, while lows average a mild 63°F to 77°F. The water temperature averages a pleasant 73°F to 82°F throughout the year.

If you want to go snorkeling or diving, you may be better off planning your trip in the winter (dry) season. Rainfall in the summer tends to come in the form of brief tropical downpours, but it can impact water visibility. Whales can also be spotted in winter from May to October during their annual migration from Antarctica.

If you visit between October and May, AKA stinger season, take extra caution when swimming in the ocean by wearing a stinger suit to protect yourself from possible jellyfish stings.

How to get to the Whitsundays

The Whitsundays can be accessed via one of the coastal towns on the mainland, with the most popular jumping off point being Airlie Beach. There are two main airports in the Whitsundays: Great Barrier Reef Airport located on Hamilton Island, and Whitsunday Coast Airport in Proserpine which is the closest airport to Airlie Beach.

If you fly into Whitsunday Coast Airport, you'll need to drive or take a transfer to Airlie Beach. This is easy to arrange with buses meeting all incoming flights. The transfer from Whitsunday Coast Airport to Airlie Beach takes around 25 minutes.

How do I get around the Whitsundays?

Passenger ferries operate a regular daily service between the mainland and the major Whitsunday islands. You can also do a sailing day tour to explore the archipelago's many highlights.

What should I pack for the Whitsundays?

The Whitsundays tend to be a casual place so you can leave your fancy clothes at home. As a top destination for water-based adventures, swimwear is a must. The same goes for sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat (even in winter) as the sun reflects off the water and white sand. Bring all the essentials, including basic medications, as shops are few and far between on the islands.

Can I use my cell phone in the Whitsundays?

You'll pick up cell phone signal in and around major tourist hubs such as Airlie Beach, but there's limited or no coverage in some parts of the Whitsundays, particularly when you're out at sea or on more remote islands.

What is the internet access like in the Whitsundays?

You'll find wi-fi in bars, cafes and restaurants in major tourist hubs like Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island and Daydream Island. There's limited or no wi-fi available in some parts of the Whitsundays, particularly when you're sailing or exploring more remote islands.

What should I wear in the Whitsundays?

There's no need to get dressed up, even if you're staying at one of the resorts in the Whitsundays. Casual clothes or active wear are fine during the day. Smart casual (think jeans and a t-shirt) is the norm for restaurants at the resorts.

Is it safe to swim in the Whitsundays?

The short answer is yes. That being said, there are some no-swimming zones. You should also listen to local advice and stay alert at all times.

Some of the top things to be aware of when swimming in the Whitsundays include stingers, crocs and sharks.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

The Whitsundays

Scattered like emeralds on aquamarine velvet, the Whitsunday Islands are one of Australia's loveliest destinations, an unmatched playground for boaters, divers, campers, fishers and resort-loungers. Sheltered by the Great Barrier Reef, these warm, rarely ruffled waters are particularly perfect for sailing, as exploited by the 100-plus yachts that gather here each August for Airlie Beach Race Week. Traditional home of the Ngaro people, these 74 islands also shelter some of the oldest archaeological sites on Australia's east coast. Five of them have resorts, but most are uninhabited, and several offer back-to-nature beach camping and bushwalking. Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island is acknowledged as the finest beach in the Whitsundays (some say the world), while mainland hub Airlie Beach, the major gateway to the islands, offers a wealth of tours and activities, plenty of eating and sleeping choices, and a hard-partying backpacker scene.

Why You Need to Visit Whitsundays: The Ultimate Whitsundays Travel Guide

Sailing Whitsunday, Australia ISail Whitsundays

When people think of visiting Australia, they think of popular destinations like Sydney, Melbourne, and even Byron Bay.

However, if you’re looking to experience the amazing white sand, bright blue water beaches that we’re all familiar with from Pinterest or snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef, you need to add Whitsundays to your Aussie Adventure.

Whitsundays is a small coastal town in Queensland that has something for literally everyone . Whether you’re a backpacker, family with small children, or looking for the perfect couples retreat, Whitsundays is the perfect destination where the combination of adventure and relaxation meets and should definitely not be missed when traveling around Australia.

Where to Stay

There are quite a few places to stay in Whitsundays depending on your preference and needs. Hamilton Island which is located near the Whitsundays Islands offers a lot of luxurious accommodation.  Another popular destination for accommodations is the Airlie Beach area which offers plenty to do and is especially more budget-friendly. Airlie Beach seems to have a lot more to do and has easy access to Hamilton Island through sailing trips and ferries, making it a better place to stay, in my opinion.

Airlie Apartments:

If you’re looking for accommodations right in the center of town and close to everything, Airlie Apartments is a fantastic place to stay whether you’re traveling with your family or away on a couples retreat.

Airlie Apartments provides ideally located beach apartments from the hilltop position overlooking Coral Sea Marina, Pioneer Bay, and the gorgeous Whitsundays Islands. With stunning views in just about every apartment, Airlie Beach has 1-3 bedroom apartments complete with kitchens, laundry facility, BBQ, and tons of space for entertaining your family on holidays.

Although located on top of the hill, Airlie Apartments is located only a 5-minute walk from the Airlie Beach Town Centre. With its prime location, not only do you get the spectacular views overlooking Whitsundays, but you get the convenience of walking down the street to hit up all the delicious restaurants, boutiques, and bars. It’s a nice combination of feeling like you’re escaping the “Airlie Beach scene,” without being fully removed.

The Great Escape in Cannonvale :

Our second accommodation on our Whitsundays Adventure after our sailing adventure was two nights at The Great Escape in Cannonvale. The town of Cannonvale itself is a retreat away from the Airlie Beach/Whitsundays area and is the perfect place for your family to stay when traveling to Whitsundays.

Cannonvale is a small coastal town that is located right next to Airlie Beach in the Whitsundays area, but is specifically known as “where the locals go to escape the tourist.”

Sailing whitsundays islands:.

Since sailing is so popular in Whitsundays, there are a few different ways to sail for different prices and duration. There are day trips out to Whitehaven Beach and snorkeling tours, there are overnight sailing adventures, and there are even options to hire your own boat and sail around the islands yourself. We opted to sail with ISail Whitsundays on a two night, overnight sailing trip and it was honestly one of the best experiences we’ve ever had.

I went over our full sailing adventure in my review of ISail Whitsundays which you can find here .

However, if you’re looking to go to the Whitsundays area and especially want to see some of the most popular destinations like Whitehaven Beach, sailing with ISail Whitsundays is an incredible and really cost-effective way to experience Whitsundays with snorkelling, water sports, all food included, and tours around the popular Whitsundays destinations, if you’re going to go to Whitsundays, do yourself a favor and book a sailing adventure with ISail Whitsundays.

If you’re looking to experience and learn more about the Airlie Beach and Whitsundays area, AquaDuck is the perfect hour-long activity for you. AquaDuck is a land and sea tour that allows you to learn about the Airlie Beach area and then go into the water and get some stunning views of Airlie Beach and Whitsunday area. Your tour guide will tell you about the areas native aboriginal people and the towns first European settlers before showing you through the streets and past the attractions and restaurants popular with visitors today.

AquaDuck is perfect if you’re traveling with kids to Whitsundays , but my partner and I had a great time ourselves learning about the history, new developments, and taking in the beautiful views of the area. With the tour being an hour-long, it’s an easy way to feel like you’re getting to see a lot of the Airlie Beach and Whitsundays area, without spending much time which is perfect if you’re only in the area for a few days like we were.

Whitehaven Beach:

Whitehaven Beach is currently named the Second Most Beautiful Beach in the world and after seeing Whitehaven Beach with my own eyes, I can honestly say it definitely holds true to its title. The beach itself is 7 km long stunning beach in the Whitsundays Islands and is only accessible by boat, seaplane, and helicopter from Airlie Beach or Hamilton Island.

I personally don’t think you can visit Whitsundays without going to visit Whitehaven Beach. With it’s incredibly white, bright blue and turquoise water, Whitehaven is so stunning and shouldn’t be missed.

Our stop at Whitehaven Beach was apart of our ISail Whitsundays Sailing Trip . There are also tons of day trips to Whitehaven Beach from Airlie Beach where you can first hike up to the Hill Inlet Lookout which gives you those picture-perfect photos of the whole beach and then you can spend some time enjoying the beach from below.

However, due to the tide, those day tours are only a few hours long. With our ISail Whitsundays sailing trip, we were able to go to the Hill Inlet Lookout, snorkel in a different location for a little bit as the tides changed, and then returned back to Whitehaven Beach when all the tours had left and had the whole beach to ourselves. That was a pretty surreal experience having the 2nd most beautiful beach in the world practically to ourselves!

Whitehaven Beach is definitely my top destination in Whitsundays.

Hookeater lookout hike:.

We love hiking, but with being in Whitsundays we didn’t think that we were able to do much hiking while visiting the area. However, there are a couple of great hiking trails in the Airlie Beach area that I highly recommend you check out as well.

Hookeater Lookout hike is located about a 10-minute walk from our accommodations at Airlie Apartments which was super convenient and we knew we had to take advantage of it with being so close. After doing some research, I found a lot of reviews that said people had trouble finding the location of the trail so we actually asked our airport shuttle driver who was nice enough to show us the location before dropping us off at Airlie Apartments.

The spot is a little tricky and we would have definitely had a problem finding it if it wasn’t for our driver.  I included a couple of photos of the entrance and the area to hopefully help you find the trail a lot easier.

Once you find the staircase, the trail itself is super easy to navigate. We were warned by our airport driver that it is a pretty tough hike and we definitely felt like we got a good workout after completing the hike. That being said, if you’re of decent fitness level, you’ll be fine ! It’s a Grade 4 walking track with bushwalking experience recommended. The hike is 8.2km and takes about 3 hours round trip. However , we were able to go there and back with stopping to take in the view in just a little over 2 hours.

We decided to go in the late afternoon due to the heat and that was a very smart decision as the temperature was nearly perfect during our hike. However , keep in mind the time the sun sets as you don’t want to be navigating your way down in the dark.

The hike was definitely worth it and gave us spectacular views of the Whitsundays Islands and was a great workout. Especially with sitting on a plane that morning, I love to do something active after sitting for so long, so the hike was the perfect option.

Airlie Creek Walking Track:

If you’re looking for a less demanding hike, the Airlie Creek Walking Track is the perfect option for you. The 850 m Airlie Creek Track slowly winds up the hill behind Airlie Beach along a gravel path, featuring rare flora and fauna like the Whitsunday Bottle Tree. The track winds you through a tranquil forest, which is home to magnificent fig trees, sub-tropical plants, beautiful native birds and ends up at scenic natural rock pools.

The walk itself will take you about an hour and you can access it on Waterson Way, Airlie Beach behind the Woolworths Shopping Centre.

Bicentennial Walk:

The Bicentennial Walkway is how we got from our Cannonvale House to Airlie Beach area. Although it’s a means of transportation between the two destinations, it’s a walkway that definitely shouldn’t be missed.

It’s no secret that Whitsundays is breathtakingly beautiful. With the Bicentennial Walkway, you’re able to walk by some of the most beautiful parts of the Airlie Beach area including Airlie Beach and the Coral Sea Marina . The walk itself is extremely peaceful and is great if you’re looking to get a morning stroll in or looking to explore the Airlie Beach to Cannonvale area.

Shop Airlie Beach Main Street:

Airlie Beach Town Centre is where you’ll find everything from groceries, takeaway, and restaurants, to bars and clubs. The Town Centre isn’t large itself, but whatever you need you can find it here. There’s a few chemists or pharmacies, Woolworths, tons of boutiques and clothing stores, and an abundance of restaurants and takeaway shops.

The Town Centre is also where you’ll find a lot of the tour and attractions main offices. You can sign up for tours and sailing adventures or even rent a car from the town centre as well.

Lastly, if you’re looking for the night scene, the Town Centre is where you should be. There are a few clubs and bars that are open late and definitely seemed busy when we were there.

Airlie Beach Lagoon:

The Airlie Beach Lagoon is located right off the Town Centre and is an incredibly nice public pool. The Airlie Beach Lagoon is completely free and open for anyone to use, but it’s especially perfect for families. There are multiple different pool areas of the lagoon designated for different activities and age groups. There’s a fun kiddie pool area where the young kids can play in the water with their parents nearby or areas for people to swim laps. There was also lifeguards on duty during the day which can give parents a peace of mind that their children can play safely in the lagoon.

I couldn’t believe that this was a free public area because of how nice it was! It’s definitely a place where you can spend all day. After checking out of our accommodations at Airlie Apartment, before heading out on our Sailing Adventure, we hung out at the Lagoon for a couple of hours, just relaxing, which was a fantastic way to spend the morning.

I highly recommend spending the day at the Lagoon, especially if you’re travelling with children.

Where to Eat

Kc bar & grill:.

If you’re looking for some pub food at low prices, KC Bar & Grill is the place for you . With daily deals for lunch menu, you can get a delicious lunch for under $15! I got the bacon, chicken Ceasar wrap and it was delicious! Eating out can get expensive, especially in Australia , so finding places like KC Bar & Grill was great for a cheap, delicious lunch!

Fish D’Vine:

Fish D’Vine is highly recommended when visiting Airlie Beach according to Tripadvisor. I ordered a Mojito and the seafood pasta. The Mojito was delicious and something that Fish D’Vine is definitely well-known for. The seafood pasta, on the other hand , was lacking flavor and for not being the cheapest option to eat in Airlie Beach, I was definitely expecting something a bit better.

My partner got a curry and that had tons of flavor and was delicious. Fish D’Vine is definitely a place to consider when visiting Airlie Beach, especially for their Mojitos. I would just skip on the seafood pasta next time.

Airlie Hotel:

Airlie Hotel Pub is connected to Airlie Hotel and is conveniently located right on Airlie Beach Town Centre. With its large menu and drink selection, Airlie Hotel is the perfect place to go when you’re not sure what you’re in the mood for or traveling with a large group.

I absolutely loved the atmosphere of Airlie Hotel Pub. With amble seating located both in and outside, you have the choice to stay out of the heat or enjoy the nice Whitsundays weather and the beautiful view of the water and eat outside.

We ate lunch at Airlie Hotel Pub and it was absolutely delicious. Their breakfast buffet option also looked incredibly delicious, but sadly we didn’t fit it into our schedule.

D’viet House Vietnamese:

Located on the same street as Airlie Hotel Pub is D’viet House Vietnamese, a casual Vietnamese restaurant. We decided to have some Pho one afternoon and even though it was quite warm outside, we definitely made the right choice going to d’viet house.

When we had our lunch, there was hardly anyone there. However , the night before we walked by and it was absolutely packed . I’m definitely someone that looks at how many people are at a restaurant and what people are eating before deciding to eat at that restaurant myself, so it’s a good thing we walked by the night before, otherwise, we probably wouldn’t have stopped for lunch that afternoon. I’m definitely glad we stopped because the Pho was absolutely delicious and I highly recommend you try it out for yourself!

Fat Frog Cafe:

Fat Frog Cafe was one of my favorite places we ate and luckily we fit it in the morning we flew back home from Whitsundays. Opening at 7 am, we were able to take a 10-minute walk from our house in Cannonvale and enjoy a delicious, unique breakfast right by Cannonvale Beach.

Fat Frog has a large selection of breakfast that you can find at just about any cafe, with a few different twists to the menu . They obviously have a healthier vibe establishment, which I love and instead of choosing the eggs benedict as I would normally choose, I went for the green pea fritters served with poached eggs, halloumi, tomatoes, and rocket. The flavor combination was so unique but absolutely delicious!

They also have a dog-friendly options on their menu, making it the perfect place to bring your pup!

I’m glad we fit going to Fat Frog Cafe into our Whitsundays Adventure, but I wish we went there earlier in the trip- if we had , we would have definitely eaten there more than once! If you’re looking for a great cafe to get breakfast, lunch, brunch, or a coffee, I highly recommend Fat Frog Cafe!

How to Get Around

Heart of reef shuttles :.

If you’re flying into the Proserpine Airport, you definitely need to get an airport transfer to get to Airlie Beach . With it being about a half an hour drive, organizing an airport transfer ahead of time is definitely recommended. We got our airport transfers from Heart of Reef Shuttles and I highly recommend them. We were picked up and dropped off by the same worker and she was incredibly friendly and super helpful.

As I mentioned, she went out of her way to show us how to get to Hookeater Lookout hike and was incredibly helpful with recommendations for the area as well. We also got a brief tour of the Proserpine area and as well as Cannonvale and Airlie Beach during our trip to and from the airport, which made the 30-minute drive a lot more entertaining.

With Airlie Beach area being so incredibly beautiful, walking around is the best way to take in the views while getting from one destination to another. With paths like the Bicentennial Walkway and Airlie Beach Foreshore, this area is definitely a pedestrian-friendly area and encouraged in the area .

Whitsundays is one of my favorite places we’ve visited in Australia since moving here . Australia has a lot of beautiful places, but so far , Whitsundays is definitely at the top and should definitely be your next bucket list destination. If you’re looking at planning your Australian adventure, I highly recommend you don’t leave Australia without a trip to Whitsundays.

Whitsunday Itinerary 7 Days

7 Days in the Whitsundays: Ultimate Guide (+ Sailing Ideas, Tips)

Come, explore the Australian paradise in our 7 days in the Whitsundays

Stretched-out coastlines, white-sandy beaches, turquoise blue waters, and rich marine life – defines the beauty of the Whitsunday Islands . Home to 74 islands, the Whitsundays is one of Australia’s most ever-green paradises. From snorkelling the crystal clear waters of the barrier reef to feeling the luxury essence of Hamilton Island, there’s a lot to see and discover at the Whitsundays.

In this article, we’ve curated an in-depth guide to the Whitsunday Islands. These include understanding the islands, why you need to visit them, best day trips, excursions, and amazing sailing tips & ideas. Along with these resources, I’ve designed a perfect  itinerary for 7 days in the Whitsundays . The trip will journey to unique bay areas, islands, protected zones, snorkelling & scuba-diving sites.

About Whitsunday Islands in Australia

The Whitsundays is a large collection of 74 tropical islands based on the Great Barrier Reef. Located 55kms from the central coast of Queensland, it’s one of Australia’s most popular tourist destinations. Today, visitors travel from all over the world to witness what a marvel Whitsunday is. It’s truly an astonishing place that tops everyone’s travel bucket list.

Now, you don’t have to visit all 74 islands in one go. Of course, that’s nearly impossible unless you make this your ‘to-do’ list. However, there are a few islands that definitely stand out from the tourism point of view.

First is  Hayman Island  because of its luxurious inland property – InterContinental Hayman Island Resort. Hayman is definately the place for you if you fancy living up at Whitsundays private island. Next is Hamilton Island , which is more popular due to accessibility via flights to major cities. Most of the catamaran cruises and private charters depart to this island from Airlie Beach. Last but not the least,  Whitsunday Island  , which is home to one of the world’s most iconic beache – Whitehaven.

Most of the islands harbouring at the Whitsundays are designated national parks. So you can expect all beaches to be clean and pristine. What’s more, is that the waters provide a great opportunity for surfers and divers.

Paradise island of Whitsunday

Why Visit the Whitsundays

The Whitsunday Islands brims with rich marine and great aquatic treasures. Before my trip, I felt this place was too good to be true. I had seen many pictures online but always felt, ‘Oh, this is just another island’. But, honestly? I am glad I got proved wrong. The Whitsundays are not your ordinary-so-called-beach-islands. It’s more of a magical place, where you say, ‘Oh, this is simply a paradise’.

If this is your first trip to Australia, and you’re deciding which places to keep and skip off the itinerary – then take my advice and  never exclude the Whitsundays . Especially when you’re in Queensland, you’ve got to visit this bunch of tropical islands. Whitsunday bustles with white-sandy beaches, striking turquoise waters, rich flora and fauna, and amazing water sports. From swimming to surfing and kayaking, everything is possible at the Whitsundays.

You just need to be ready for the adventure!

Overview of 7 Days in the Whitsundays

From feeling the purest sands of Whitehaven to snorkelling the beaches of Hamilton, our Whitsundays itinerary explores some of the region’s best attractions and experiences. The intention of curating this trip was to include more discoveries, niche activities and unique tours to help you plan a perfect vacation to the Whitsundays. While a week-long trip sounds fun, it even gets better when you hop-on-hop-off various islands in the Whitsundays.

Ideally, you require a minimum of 4 days to explore the beauty of the Whitsunday Islands.  A four-day trip is more than sufficient to experience what the fuss is all about. However, with a 7-day trip, you get to visit more islands.

If that’s what you prefer, then this trip is for you!

How to Spend 7 Days in the Whitsundays

Planning Tips for 7 Days in the Whitsundays

Now that you know what Whitsundays are and why you need to visit them let’s dig deeper into the essential planning tips.

There are plenty of ways to explore the Whitsunday Islands. The first is an  ordinary tour , where you book a certain 4-day or 7-day package. The other is a private journey, where you book a  bareboat sailing trip . With a bareboat itinerary – you get the flexibility & freedom of sailing anywhere across the islands. This is ideally great for families & youth looking to venture Whitsundays on their own. Regardless of your preference, both offer a great visiting experience to the Whitsundays.

The itinerary which I’ve curated below can be perfectly suited for both the exploration ways. But, if you’re choosing the bareboat version, we have some tips for you!

This section explains what a bareboat is, how you need to book them, which ones to choose, and what rental equipment to purchase. All-in-all, if you have doubts about self-touring the Whitsunday Islands, this section will clear out the answers!

What is a Bareboat?

Let’s first understand what a bareboat really is.  It’s nothing but a term used for a vessel that you rent without a crew . For example, when you usually take boat trips around an island, you have a staff accompanying your journey. Be it the sailor or catering team – they are with you on your trip. But, in the bareboat scenario, the vessel belongs to you privately. There won’t be any crew, any staff joining you on this trip. This type of vessel thus gives you the flexibility of sailing your own itinerary at your own pace.

Travel Tip:  You do need some prior experience sailing a bareboat or a private yacht. If you don’t, then there are few options to ride out Power Catamarans. Do check with the tour operator before you make any reservations.

Monohulls Vs Catamarans

Now that you know what a bareboat is let’s consider the options to decide which one is more suitable. I do not have much expertise in this area to guide you on which one is the best; however, I’ll put a differential list between the two popular boats, i.e. Monohulls and Catamarans.

Monohulls  are yachts with a single hull. Since it has only one hull, it makes it difficult to sail against the strong winds. However, given the right conditions at the Whitsundays, Monohulls offers the best sailing experience.

Catamarans , on the other side, have two hulls. Since the stance of the heel area is large, this type of boat slightly less succumbs to strong winds. This type of bareboat is perfect for families travelling with kids.

How to Rent a Bareboat in the Whitsunday Islands?

Bareboating in Whitsundays is a unique experience  and offers you the freedom to create your own sailing path. As fruitful as the experience sounds, finding a good tour operator to book your trip isn’t easy.

I recommend  Charter Yachts Australia  for our Whitsundays itinerary to smoothen your efforts. I don’t have an affiliate relationship with them; rather, I’m suggesting this tour operator based on a few travellers’ experiences. The operator’s service and affordable rates make it simpler for you to book your perfect bareboat adventure.

Get your Rental Equipment Ready

This Whitsunday itinerary for 7 days will be taking you across several different protected bay areas. And, I’m pretty sure you want to try out water adventures during your trip. Thus, I recommend you book your rental pieces of equipment in advance. The first option is to book directly from the cruise operator. The second is to book individual guided activities . I advice you to book certain activities before your trip, as its much cheaper than making reervations last moment.

Detailed Whitsundays Itinerary 7 Days

Day 1: airlie beach.

Airlie Beach in Queensland is a perfect touring base to explore the Whitsunday Islands. During the peak season, Airlie is completely flocked with tourists and can be one of the busiest periods to spend your vacation. However, given that you travel during the shoulder season – Airline Beach is an amazing destination to spend a couple of nights.

Airlie Beach is not only a major tourist attraction but an important site for day-trippers to explore nearby islands. It acts as a gateway to enter the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef. And while it offers an incredible experience for those wanting to explore nearby islands, Airline Beach itself is a place worth exploring.

For our Whitsunday itinerary, I only included a single-night stay at Airlie Beach because I feel one day is more than sufficient to explore what this coastal base has to offer. Furthermore, below are some of the suggestions which you could do on day one itself.

Learn to Sail

Sailing in Whitsundays is a definitive experience , and this is your time to get a perfect hands-on experience sailing a charter. You could start your day at Airlie Beach by getting to know the boat’s mechanics, sailor’s terminologies, and plenty of other things. This way, you get acquainted with all sailing-related tips before your trip starts.

As soon as you arrive at Airlie Beach, you can see plenty of yacht operators offering professional and practical courses. Depending on your preference, you could purchase the plan or simply get a hands-on tour for a few hours.

Relax in the Airlie Beach Lagoon

There’s nothing more peaceful than laying down on a beach, soaking in the tropical vibes of Airlie’s beauty. If relaxation is your key priority, then the  Airline Beach Lagoon  makes it possible. Located right in the centre of the beach, the lagoon has become a popular tourist focal point. With no entry fees, you could literally spend all day relaxing at the lagoon.

With a fusion of man-made and natural attractions, the Airlie Beach Lagoon is one of the most-visited spots in Queensland. It’s ideal for those who want to relax by the beach, either reading a book or sipping a glass of wine.

Day 2: Stonehaven

Hook Island is one of the popular beach islands of Whitsundays. It’s most commonly known for its anchorage spots.

The term ‘ anchorage ‘ basically means an area where you can safely dock your ship, yacht, or charter. These anchorage spots provide safe navigable waterways for your boats to explore nearby areas and places.

For the next three days, you’ll be exploring the reefs and islands of Hook Island. As mentioned earlier, this island is a safe place for boat anchorage – you’ll be having multiple options to dock your bareboat.

The first on the list is the famous Stonehaven . As described by many travelers, Stonehaven was their ‘ favorite ‘ anchorage spot to relax and soak in the charming atmosphere of the Whitsundays. Fringed by extensive reefs, Stonehaven makes a great spot to witness sunsets. Moreover, you can also opt to visit the Stonehaven waterfall, which is probably the only largest waterfall in Whitsunday Islands.

Day 3: Langford Reef & Butterfly Bay

Located near Hayman Island, Langford Reef is one of the magical places to snorkel in the Whitsunday Islands. Although small in size, the island has been well-appreciated for its beauty and exciting water-bound adventures. What I like the most, is that not many people venture off to Langford Reef. So, this could be your perfect spot if you prefer lesser-tourists.

The major highlight of visiting Langford reef is its long sand spit. Despite the heavy tides that smash the coast, the spit has been a favored spot for sunbathing, swimming, and beach-picnicking.

After your relaxation, head to the northern-most portion of Hook Island to explore Butterfly Bay . For a fact, I liked this bay even more than the Langford Reef. Many scuba divers and snorkellers often find Butterfly Bay as their sweet spot to cover the island’s fascinating ecosystem. And I personally found Butterfly Bay to be the best snorkeling site in the Whitsunday Islands .

Day 4: Macona Inlet

Situated to the south of Hook Island, Macona Inlet is also one of Whitsundays popular bay areas, offering great sheltered anchorage. Often so, places like Nara Inlet and Bufferfly Bay tend to be crowded with tourists. So, in such a scenario, Macona Inlet could be a great alternative to dock overnight.

I didn’t find Macona to be a great snorkeling site, however, it’s good if you love kayaking and paddle boarding. Just rent a kayak and wander off to explore the nearby bays of Hook Island.

Day 5: Whitsunday Island

It feels like a dream to explore  Whitsunday Islands  in Queensland. Out of all the isles, Whitsunday is arguably the most beautiful one.

Whitehaven Beach  on Whitsunday is one of the most tranquil beaches on earth. It isn’t only popular in Australia but also competes with the world’s other glistening beaches. Nestled amongst the corals of the Great Barrier Reef, Whitehaven is 7km (4.3mi) long, filled with the purest of white silica sands.

Since the beach is situated within a national park, Whitehaven stands out as the most pristine beach in Australia. The beach and its marine life are well-protected, despite the many day-trippers visiting the shore. To make your exploration at Whitehaven Beach more exciting, I suggest booking a seaplane or a scuba-dive activity to explore the wonders underneath the coast.

Day 6: Hamilton Island

If I can something paradise, then that would probably be  Hamilton Island .

Fringed by bushlands, palm trees, and extensive coastline, Hamilton Island just might be the place for you to witness what ‘luxury’ means. The reason why I call this a luxurious island is because of the fancy resorts that call Hamilton has its home. If that’s what you prefer, then try booking an overnight stay at  qualia  – one that defines the ‘pure luxury’ of Hamilton Island.

Alternatively, you can explore the island’s in-house attractions, including  Hamilton Island wildlife  and  Dent Island . I’d rather suggest a short trip to the Hamilton Island Wildlife first, to discover Australia’s most friendly native animals. From koalas to crocodiles and bird species, you can almost spot them in the great vicinity. Then, if time permits, take a trip to Dent Island. Try a game of golf here, or paddle a kayak down the island’s coral reefs to explore what Hamilton offers.

Day 7: South Molle Island

Surrounded by an oasis of palm trees and white sands, South Molle is a tiny little island located off the coast of Shutte Harbour. There isn’t much to do around, than soaking in the pleasures of your last day at Whitsunday. I would probably give a try to some activities, if you regret missing out on something. Just like the other islands, South Molle does offer great experiential tours for you to explore the best of Whitsunday Islands.

More or less, you could simply spend this day relaxing and cherishing the memorable trip you just had!

This marks the end of your Whitsunday itinerary 7 days.

Whitsunday Islands Day Trip & Excursions

Whitsundays is a paradisiacal place to explore island day trips, beach-walking, snorkeling, kayaking, swimming, and many other activities. If you are keen to discover what more you could do in our Whitsundays itinerary, then I highly recommend checking out these specific tours:

Love rafting? Explore Whitsundays on this epic ocean rafting tour . Want to go aerial? Explore the tropical islands of Whitsunday on this 60-minute scenic flight . Take a half-day trip to Whitehaven beach on this amazing 6-hour cruise .

Hope your enjoyed reading this guide as much as we enjoyed curating it. This 7-day itinerary to Whitsundays explores some of the area’s most unspoiled regions & attractions. As you sail past the islands, you’ll soon realize that there’s more to your adventure. Oh, and if 7 days in the Whitsundays isn’t enough, you can always extend it by spending a couple of nights more.

A Travel Guide to Sailing the Whitsundays: 5 Day Itinerary

Are you thinking of Sailing the Whitsundays? Well, here’s a quick piece of advice – stop thinking about it and book! This is one place and travel experience you will never forget.

In this travel guide, I’m doing things a bit differently than usual. I laid this travel guide out like an itinerary to share more of the experience. Also, you’ll find tips on how to get to the Whitsundays, what to do in Airlie Beach, what boat company we went with, and so much more! I hope you find it super helpful when planning your trip.

A Travel Guide to Sailing the Whitsundays: 5 Day Itinerary

Where are the Whitsundays?

We found paradise in the Whitsundays. Right off the coast of Queensland Australia is a group of 74 islands that make up the Whitsundays. This area is known for its incredible snorkelling, pristine beaches, and sailing! So if you’re looking for the perfect tropical vacation, this is it!

It’s been ten years since I’ve been to the Whitsundays as a young backpacker, and to this day, it’s still one of my favourite travel experiences. I remembered it to be one of the most naturally beautiful places with an incredibly fun vibe! However, I always dreamed of coming back here with a romantic partner and experiencing it together. So imagine my excitement booking a 3-night sailing trip with Ben, my new fiance.

How to Get to the Whitsundays

We booked an Alliance Airline flight with Expedia , and travelled from Brisbane to the Proserpine Airport (20 minutes from Airlie Beach) in less than 2 hours. You can also take flights straight to some of the Whitsunday Islands, but most sailing trips depart from Airlie Beach.

Book a transfer ahead of time, or you can find one at the airport for $22 per person one-way or $35 return. We booked with Heart of Reef Shuttles and had the entire bus all to ourselves, while everyone else from our plane crammed in on another bigger bus. We had the most lovely driver, who told us all about the region and even gave us recommendations on what to do! Love that type of personalized service.

My Travel Guide to the Whitsundays

Most of the sailing trips leave in the early afternoon around 2 pm. And since there was only one late afternoon flight into Airlie Beach at the time of our trip (during 2020 when COVID seriously reduced flights), we planned to stay one night in Airlie. It ended up being such a fun part of our trip, that I’ve included it in this travel guide.

With that being said, here’s my 4-day itinerary sailing around the Whitsunday Islands, as well as 1 night in Airlie Beach.

Day 1: Airlie Beach

We checked into our beautiful ocean view room at the Mantra Club Croc just in time to enjoy the sunset. With palm trees swaying and a warm ocean breeze, I automatically felt relaxed and settled into vacation mode.

That evening we headed into Airlie Beach (a 5-minute taxi or 15-minute walk from Mantra Club Croc ) for some drinks, dinner and FUN, and boy did we find it. Airlie Beach is a small seaside city with a big personality. It’s known for its upbeat party scene with tons of fun clubs, friendly restaurants, and live music around every corner. We started our evening with a drink and listened to live music at The Pub .

Later we had dinner at Paradiso Rooftop Bar & Restaurant and finished the evening dancing the night away on their hidden rooftop. I don’t even remember the last time I went dancing and had a night out like this. It was such a blast! So if you’re planning a trip to the Whitsundays, be sure to include one night in Airlie Beach.

If you Have Extra Time in Airlie Beach

If you arrive at Airlie Beach in the morning or have a spare afternoon, be sure to go to Northerlies Beach Bar for lunch. We enjoyed it’s laid back vibe and incredible views.

4-Days Sailing the Whitsundays

Sailing the whitsundays itinerary at a glance.

  • Day 1: Depart Airlie at 3 pm, sail out to sea, sunset drinks & dinner
  • Day 2: Whitehaven Inlet Lookout, Whitehaven Beach, and South. Whitsunday Lookout for sunset.
  • Day 3: Snorkel 2 different areas, whale watching, sailing into the sunset, stargaze.
  • Day 4: Woke up for sunrise at 6 am, one last snorkel & swim, and then sailed back to Airlie Beach.

Our Experience Sailing the Whitsundays

Sailing the Whitsundays is an absolute dream with no worries in the world! Every morning we’d wake up to blue skies and sunshine, enjoy a freshly made breakfast and hot coffee, and then sail off to a new destination to discover more of this tropical paradise.

We spent our days spotting humpback whales, jumping off the boat with our new friends, swimming and snorkelling with turtles and tropical fish and admiring some of the most spectacular sunrises and sunsets while sailing. There was also a SUP board, so all the couples took turns paddling around, and Ben and I swam all the way to shore so we could walk the beach.

Here’s my Instagram Reel on our Whitsunday sailing experience!

Every day was packed full of exploring new islands or bays! But we still felt relaxed thanks to our trusted boat crew who spoiled us with delicious meals, new experiences and taught us about the area. In the evenings, we’d all enjoy a drink and dinner while the sun went down, and then we’d stay up chatting, exchanging travel stories and playing card games.

Overall, sailing the Whitsundays is the ultimate way to see this part of Australia.

A girl with a hat on looks out towards sunset with a glass of champagne in hand.

Whitehaven Beach

One of the main reasons people sail the Whitsundays is to see Whitehaven Beach . Whitehaven Beach is named one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and the #1 best beach in Australia. Start at Hill Inlet lookout to admire the turquoise blue waters swirl with miles of white sand. After, splash and swim in some of the clearest water, soak up the sun, and relax on this tropical island!

A girl with a hat on sits on Whitehaven Beach as the tide comes in

Hidden Hammock at Whitehaven Beach

My highlight from the day was finding a hidden hammock up on some rocks, where we were able to admire Whitehaven Beach from a unique angle.

Are you interested in discovering this secret spot for yourself? When you are on Whitehaven Beach facing the ocean, turn left and walk to a tucked-away cove at the end of the beach. Climb up those rocks, and at the top, you’ll find this hammock. Enjoy!

Final Sunrise

On our final morning, we rolled out of bed at 6 am and cozied up with our blankets on the top deck. The stars were still out, but along the horizon was a soft glow from the rising sun. Our captain drove us out to sea so that we could watch the sun pop up from the ocean horizon, while our skipper handed us piping hot coffees to wake us from our slumber.

As the sun emerged from the sea, I remember thinking this had been the most magical trip, and then two humpback whales breached in the distance! What an incredible moment. This trip is one I’ll never forget.

Logistical Details on Sailing the Whitsundays

So, have I sold you on sailing the Whitsundays? Thought so!

Here are all the details you will want to know ahead of time. Including, what boat company to book with (and how to get the best deal), how long to sail for, what is the food like, and packing. I found most of this information hard to come by online, so I hope it helps you while planning your Whitsunday adventure.

The Whitsundays Sailing Company We Booked With

We booked the Whitsunday Blue 3-day 3-night trip through, Sailing Whitsundays . To be honest, we booked this trip in June 2020, after COVID’s peak and travel restrictions were lifted in Australia. Therefore, a lot of these tours were discounted to encourage travellers to jump on board. However, even though the prices were heavily marked down with SailingWhitsundays.com, I still shopped around and actually found a cheaper price for the same boat and experience elsewhere (AirlieBeach.com). But because Sailing Whitsundays wanted to get our booking, they have a price matching guarantee and matched the price for us. This saved us up to $100 per person. Lesson learned: don’t go with the first price you see – shop around!

Whitsunday Blue – Our Sailing Boat

The Whitsunday Blue catamaran typically fits eight people and two crew. But due to new socially distancing protocols for COVID, we only had six people on our trip, plus two staff, Claire, our Captain, and Ginny, our Skipper. This ended up being the perfect amount. Any more people on board and it would have felt crowded.

One of the best parts about this boat is each couple had a private bedroom and ensuite bathroom, which was a major selling point for us. Plus, it is one of the few boats that run the 3-days, 3-nights option. Since I have now have done both the backpacker boat (Avatar: bunk beds, 1 bathroom, and a lot of partying) and this more expensive but WAY more comfortable option, I would say Whitsunday Blue is the way to go.

Of course, if you don’t have the money for this type of experience, you are a solo traveller, or you want to drink all day, then the budget boats will be perfect for you!

Food on Board the Boat

Onboard, all your meals and snacks are covered and cooked for you. Personally, I was blown away by the quality of the food. For example, on our first evening, Ginny cooked nachos for a pre-dinner snack and then pan-seared salmon and vegetables, followed by chocolate cake for dessert – yum! On my previous trip, my backpacker boat cooked up hot-dogs for dinner, so this was a big step up. Also, the boat was super accommodating to allergies and dietary requirements.

As for beverages, the only drinks included are tea, coffee and water. So if you like juice, pop, wine or other alcoholic drinks, you can bring them on board, but they are not included. Plus, they will refrigerate them for you.

My advice, bring more alcohol than you think because you can’t stop along the way. Worst comes to worst, you take it off the boat and bring it with you!

My Advice for Sailing the Whitsundays

As I mentioned before I highly recommend a 3-night, 4-day trip versus the 2-night journey if you have the time. The whole experience felt more relaxed, and we saw so much more than the quick 2-night excursion. Plus, the cost isn’t too much more for an entire extra day and night compared to the 2-night trips.

Packing for Sailing the Whitsundays

When packing for your sailing trip remember that you are only allowed to bring on a small soft bag. So no hard suitcases, as they won’t fit in your room! With this being said, the key is to pack light! I’m an over-packer, but I promise, you won’t need much when living on a boat. Especially if you visit during the summer months.

Packing list for the Whitsundays:

  • 2 bathing suits
  • Comfortable waterproof sandals . This is all you will wear while on the boat & to walk to Whitehaven Beach. My husband and I both have these , and love how supportive they are.
  • 2 pairs of shorts
  • 1 lightweight sundress
  • A warm sweater for night-time . We visited in the winter and brought a couple more layers including a packable puffy jacket for windy days/nights
  • 1 good book ( here are some of my favourites )
  • A sun hat & sunglasses to protect you from the sun
  • Reef Safe Sunscreen . This is a must as the boat crew checks to ensure it is reef safe to avoid further coral bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef. I used crew approved SunBum 50 SPF
  • Our boat supplied towels, so we didn’t bring any. But some other boats don’t supply towels, so if they don’t, I recommend these lightweight, quick drying towels. They are perfect for travel!
  • Camera & GoPro or waterproof camera to capture all the beauty
  • These acupressure motion sickness wrist bands if you tend to get seasick on boats. Some people on our boat used them and swear by them! Plus they are low cost, and reusable.
  • Cards: our current favourite card game is Monopoly Deal . It’s perfect for travelling, quick to play, and seriously addicting. We played this with the whole group on board, and it really helped break the ice on the first night.
  • If you don’t already have a universal adaptor plug that works worldwide , I recommend bringing this on all your travels. We have this one and love it!

More Things to Do in the Whitsundays

There are so many incredible experiences you can have in Whitsundays, and we only scratched the surface. For example, next time we come, I’d love to stay on one of the islands, like Hamilton Island, Hayman Island, or Daydream Island , which have some of the most spectacular resorts.

You can also take a scenic helicopter ride or plane flight , where you would see the heart-shaped reef, and you can even land on a private island for the most romantic picnic lunch. Gentlemen, if you’re looking for a romantic way to propose or just want to impress your partner, this would be the way to go!

How to Remove Negative Reviews Online and Protect Your Online Reputation In the digital age, maintaining a positive online reputation is crucial for businesses, as customer reviews on the internet heavily influence brand perception and purchasing decisions. This article delves into effective strategies for managing both legitimate and fake online reviews, offering insights into crisis management and proactive approaches to uphold and enhance your brand's reputation in the virtual world.

By Scott Bartnick • Apr 22, 2024

Key Takeaways

How online reviews affect your brand reputation, how to remove fake online reviews to build a good reputation, how to address legitimate negative online reviews to manage your reputation, how to proactively approach online reputation management.

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

One of the biggest challenges businesses face is protecting their online reputation . Now that virtually everyone can access the internet from the convenience of their mobile device, many consumers use online reviews to share their experiences or inform their purchasing decisions. As such, many businesses are looking for new methods of online reputation management to build a positive online reputation.

A strategic narrative is one of the most important tools a brand needs to survive challenges to its online reputation. A strategic narrative defines the brand's identity, values and purpose, which should drive every interaction the brand has with its customers. If a business's online presence and interactions with its customers don't align with this narrative, it could harm the company's online reputation.

Reviews are extremely powerful to a brand's online image in both directions. Positive reviews create word-of-mouth recommendations that could attract new customers . On the other hand, bad online reviews can scare customers away — and even those who aren't scared away could view your brand negatively.

However, while negative reviews are just as critical as positive content to a business, illegitimate negative reviews can be used in an attempt to destroy a business's positive reputation . These fake reviews, whether created by bots or a party breaking the review platform's terms of service (for instance, previous employees or a competitor), can have a disproportionately negative impact on the brand's reputation if left unchecked.

Related: Your Online Reputation Is Powerful — Use These Methods to Enhance and Protect It.

Thankfully, most online review sites realize the unfair negative consequences of these fake reviews and allow businesses to flag and remove illegitimate reviews. As a business owner, platforms like Google and Trustpilot let you log in to your admin panel and report the review as breaking the platform's terms of service.

Generally speaking, these platforms all work similarly and are good about removing illegitimate reviews. For Google, it may take a few reports as different moderators may come to different conclusions about the legitimacy of the review. Trustpilot has premium support — sometimes even going so far as to track the IP address associated with the review to see if it is the registered address of a competitor. Employee review services like Glassdoor are an exception, where it can be much harder to get reviews removed because of the nature of these sites.

While these steps are practical for illegitimate review management, they are not advisable for legitimate reviews. Even if you manage to get a legitimate review removed from a site successfully, that will leave the customer even more angry and likely to take action against your reputation, as you will not be seen as trustworthy. Instead, when facing legitimate negative reviews, respond to them in an ethical and well-thought-out way.

Related: Don't Fall Victim to a Digital Hitman — Here Are 6 Ways to Protect Your Online Reputation From Fake Reviews

When dealing with legitimate negative reviews, all reputation management firms will tell you the same thing: having a crisis management strategy in place is essential. Although online content might not seem like a major crisis, it can balloon out of control if you don't know how to handle it. If you don't respond appropriately, you could escalate and worsen the situation, ruining your online brand image.

Remember, with negative reviews, you're dealing with someone who is already unhappy with your company, so it is crucial to respond quickly to remedy the situation. Ideally, you can help the customer reach a resolution that encourages them to delete or at least adjust their review upwards. The first step in dealing with a legitimate negative review is to identify the root cause of the issue. If the reviewer left their name or contact info on their profile or in their review, find their order or account with you and identify what went wrong.

Sometimes, the reviews you receive will be anonymous, in this case, your best option is to reply with a point of contact to reach out to so that they can provide more details. It's a good idea to apologize that they feel negatively but not admit fault — you are still unsure of the details.

Once you have identified the party who left the negative review, try to remedy the solution. Generally, this means giving them a chance to improve their experience. For service-based companies, an ideal resolution might be a free month of your service or reassigning the customer to a different team, depending on the issue they experienced. For restaurants, the best course of action is probably inviting them back to have another meal on the house.

The best way to deal with negative reviews is to prevent them proactively. Of course, you won't be able to leave every single customer satisfied, but not every unhappy customer will leave a bad review. Strategies like transparent communication and authenticity across platforms can help prevent unhappy customers from becoming so disgruntled that they write negative reviews.

Furthermore, you should conduct online reputation monitoring for any brand mentions. There are specialized software business leaders can use to monitor mentions of their company's name online. However, the "DIY" method of social listening — by using search engines and setting Google or social media alerts with the name as the keyword to flag relevant search results — is also an effective way of being notified when a customer has said something about the business. These alerts can allow you to respond to negative comments about your company in a timely manner.

Although it's not always possible to remove negative online reviews, there are other tried and true methods for repairing and restoring your business's online reputation through effective crisis management. By actively engaging with your audience, implementing constructive feedback, and showcasing your commitment to customer satisfaction, you can gradually rebuild trust and improve your digital footprint. Remember, every challenge is an opportunity to demonstrate your dedication to excellence and to turn a negative situation into a positive outcome for your brand.

The new travel series is receiving mostly positive reviews. “ Conan O’Brien Must Go  is a smartly dumb show — or a stupidly smart show — focused (loosely) on what is essential about travel,” Hollywood Reporter chief TV critic Daniel Fienberg writes in his review . “It’s a series about arriving in a new place open to meeting new people, learning new languages, tasting new foods and experiencing uncomfortable new circumstances … and then making fun of them, when all the while you’re mostly mocking yourself and the fears people have about stepping outside of their comfort zones.”
