New wave/synth-pop masters Heaven 17 will be coming to North America this fall for their first-ever headlining transatlantic tour celebrating their storied 40-year career.

The acclaimed British duo of Martyn Ware and Glenn Gregory will perform their much-loved greatest hits, including “Temptation,” “Let Me Go,” and “Hands Up To Heaven,” classic tracks, and other highlights. The 15-date We Don’t Need This Fascist Groove Thang outing launches September 16 at Daryl’s House in Pawling, NY and will stop in major cities including Boston, Detroit, Chicago, Toronto, Philadelphia, New York City, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, and Portland, among others, before wrapping in Seattle on October 6.

“Our first trip to America as Heaven 17 was to New York in 1981; in fact, it was my first-ever trip to the USA and was a truly amazing experience. I can’t remember how on earth this came about, but we were going to play our first-ever live performance at the legendary Studio 54,” shares Gregory.

“We have, believe it or not, only ever played the States twice since then – once at a brilliant sold-out gig at The Highline Ballroom in NYC and the other at the Music Tastes Good festival in Long Beach, California, both in 2017. So, it’s certainly way past the time for Heaven 17 to finally come and tour in America and we are on our way! We know we have some amazing fans over there and we’re really excited to, at last, be able to play in front of all of them.”

Taking their name from the Anthony Burgess novel A Clockwork Orange , Heaven 17 grew out of the experimental production outfit the British Electric Foundation, itself an offshoot of the electro-pop group The Human League. In 1981, Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh left The Human League, recruited vocalist Glenn Gregory and Heaven 17 was born. Their critically acclaimed first album Penthouse and Pavement , featuring their debut single “(We Don’t Need This) Fascist Groove Thang,” followed the same year and remains a modern classic and just as relevant today.

Im an old school fan of arguably one of the best bands of the 80s from Sheffield. Tickets are quite expensive in detroit for the show. How are they live and should i go?

Heaven 17’s Glenn Gregory On The Band’s Current U.S. Headlining Tour, Long-Term Success In Music, Future Heaven 17 Plans & More

1980s new wave/synth-pop masters Heaven 17 — as co-founded by Martyn Ware and Glenn Gregory — first grew out of the experimental production outfit known as the British Electric Foundation, which itself an offshoot of the electro-pop group The Human League. Heaven 17 debuted in 1981 with its critically-acclaimed album Penthouse & Pavement , as featuring their debut single “(We Don’t Need This) Fascist Groove Thang,” which remains a modern classic. The group’s second album, 1983’s platinum-selling The Luxury Gap yielded the #2-charting single “Temptation,” plus other hit singles by way of “Come Live With Me” and “Crushed By the Wheels of Industry.” Heaven 17 spent the rest of the 1980s releasing three more studio albums before going on a proper hiatus that would ensue until 1996.

Heaven 17’s regrouping in 1996 led to the new album Bigger Than America , which included the U.S. dance smash single “Hands Up To Heaven.” After another break, the 2000s saw the releases of 2005’s Before After and 2008’s Naked As Advertised . Now a collective between Ware and Gregory with piano and synth player Flo Sabeva and soul singers Kelly Barnes and Rachel Mosleh very much part of the live dynamic, Heaven 17 — a group which largely refused to play live during the 1980s — is now a powerful live act, having toured alongside the likes of La Roux and Squeeze in recent years. Heaven 17 is currently touring North America on the We Don’t Need This Fascist Groove Thang Tour , its first-ever headlining U.S. tour, with a set that mixes the band’s greatest hits, classic tracks and other highlights.

On September 26, 2022, I had the pleasure of speaking with Glenn Gregory via Zoom, as embedded below. More on Gregory and Heaven 17 can be found online by clicking here , here and here .

We are thrilled to announce our postponed and much anticipated US / Canada tour for this September / October. Sooo looking forward to seeing all our trans-Atlantic fans – Love you all – Get down! xx Tickets via our live page: https://t.co/y6ZCQ3oRRU pic.twitter.com/Y8BxHNnPJt — Heaven 17 (@heaven17bef) March 24, 2022

Taking their name from the Anthony Burgess novel A Clockwork Orange, the U.K. techno-pop trio Heaven 17 grew out of the experimental dance project the British Electric Foundation, itself an offshoot of the electro-pop outfit Human League. The core of Heaven 17 was originally comprised of Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh, a pair of onetime computer operators who first teamed in 1977 as the Dead Daughters, a duo that integrated synthesizer patterns with a heavy reliance on tape loops. Soon, Ware and Marsh were joined by Philip Oakey and Adi Newton and changed their name to the Human League, where they remained before exiting together in 1980.

As a means of establishing the synthesizer as an expressive, human instrument, Marsh and Ware formed the British Electric Foundation, a production project that employed a variety of musicians and singers including Tina Turner, Sandie Shaw, and Gary Glitter. The B.E.F.’s debut, 1980’s Music of Quality and Distinction, Vol. 1, also included vocalist Glenn Gregory, a former photographer whom Ware and Marsh met at a Sheffield drama center; in 1981, the duo enlisted Gregory for Heaven 17, the first and most successful B.E.F. alter ego, and debuted with the single “(We Don’t Need This) Fascist Groove Thang,” a minor hit banned by the BBC over its title. An album, Penthouse and Pavement, followed the same year.

By the release of 1983’s The Luxury Gap, the B.E.F. had fallen by the wayside and Heaven 17 had become Ware and Marsh’s primary focus; the LP proved highly successful, spawning the hit singles “Temptation,” “Come Live with Me,” “Crushed by the Wheels of Industry,” and “Let Me Go.” The follow-up, How Men Are, was another British hit, but Heaven 17 receded from view after its release; when they returned in 1986 with the album Pleasure One, it was with a number of guest musicians and vocalists. After the commercial failure of 1988’s Teddy Bear, Duke & Psycho, Heaven 17 officially disbanded; Ware focused on production chores and worked on Terence Trent D’Arby’s debut, Introducing the Hardline According to Terence Trent D’Arby. In 1990, he and Marsh resurrected the B.E.F. aegis, releasing Music of Quality and Distinction, Vol. 2 the following year.

In 1996, a re-formed Heaven 17 returned with Bigger Than America and embarked on a tour, documented by the Live at Last CD released in 1999. The studio effort Before After was issued in 2005; the following year Marsh disappeared from the group’s live lineup, and by 2008 it was confirmed that he had left the band. The group soldiered on as a vehicle for Ware and Gregory, however (and with an expanded role for former backup singer Billie Godfrey), releasing the Naked as Advertised CD — including one new song and re-recordings of early tracks by both Heaven 17 and the Human League — on the Just Music label in 2009 following a tour held in December of the previous year.

Heaven 17 announce 40th anniversary tour for ‘The Luxury Gap’

Heaven 17 announce 40th anniversary tour for ‘The Luxury Gap’

Heaven 17 have today announced a very special UK tour to perform their celebrated and acclaimed 1983 album ‘ The Luxury Gap ’ . The tour includes a Sussex concert which this time around will be at the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill-on-Sea on on Monday 13th November.

Hailing from Sheffield, Heaven 17 are one of the most important British post-punk bands. Heaven 17’s second album ‘The Luxury Gap’ in 1983 was the moment when everything just clicked into place to overwhelming effect. It undoubtedly became a pop masterpiece.

The trio convinced their sceptical record company that ‘Temptation’ had to be the next single. A duet between Glenn Gregory and Carol Kenyon, this song of lust, brilliantly framed by a musical structure, stormed the charts and remains a momentous classic to this day. The album itself went to reach No.4 and cemented Heaven 17 as one of the most important British post-punk bands.

40 years later ‘The Luxury Gap’ Heaven 17’s sly, post-modern critique of modern society has never sounded so resonant, nor been so necessary. On the celebratory tour Glenn Gregory said:

“When we were writing and recording the tracks for our second album ‘The Luxury Gap’ we were energised by the critical success of our first album ‘Penthouse And Pavement’. We wanted to make the new songs stand up and stand out. We wanted to write songs that people would take to their hearts.

40 years later our audience are still loving those songs and we are very excited to be touring our most successful album ‘The Luxury Gap’. Come on and jump aboard the Heaven 17 time machine, let’s party like it’s 1983”

The Luxury Gap’ is a really solid album. It’s packed with all killers and no fillers! The tracklist reads:

‘Crushed By The Wheels Of Industry’ ‘Who’ll Stop The Rain’ ‘Let Me Go’ ‘Key To The World’ ‘Temptation’ ‘Come Live With Me ‘ ‘Lady Ice And Mr Hex’ ‘We Live So Fast’ ‘The Best Kept Secret’

The Band will be covering 13 dates this November performing their masterpiece in full along with some of their classic tracks. Tickets go on sale Friday 28th April at 10am via www.gigsandtours.com and www.ticketmaster.co.uk .

CONCERT REVIEW : Heaven 17, Glasgow O2 Academy, Thursday 25th November 2021

HEAVEN 17 LEAD US NOT ONLY INTO TEMPTATION BUT DELIVER US A STORMING SHOW

Glenn Gregory and Martyn Ware are back on tour to promote Heaven 17’s 40 th anniversary, though due to the recent lockdown and covid outbreak and with everything being shelved, it’s now technically welcome to the 41 st Anniversary Tour! And the crowds braved the cold, wet wintery night in Glasgow to do just that, and turned up in their droves to see the 80s legends perform the hits plus a few more select choices.

First up was support act Pete Wylie, former front man with The Mighty Wah, who warmed up the crowd with his short set and included the songs Come Back, Sinful and The Story of the Blues.  He closed his set with a cover of the Johnny Thunders classic You Can’t Put Your Arms Around a Memory, and the stage was cleared ready for the main act.

Heaven 17 were established in 1980 and evolved from the break up of The Human League, with keyboard wizards Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh recruiting Glenn Gregory to front the new band, allowing for Phil Oakey to carry on the remains as The Human League.  Both bands saw great success in the 80s new wave / electro pop scene, and tonight’s set would see H17 cover tracks from their first three albums with a couple of covers thrown in for good measure.

' title=

Opening with The Height of the Fighting from the 1981 debut album Penthouse and Pavement, the atmosphere was electric with Gregory and Ware on top form and the crowd lapping up every second.  Big numbers followed, (We Don’t Need This) Fascist Groove Thang, Crushed By The Wheels of Industry and Come Live With Me.  A big wet face cloth couldn’t wipe the smile from Glenn Gregory’s face, with Ware proclaiming the Glasgow audience were already the best crowd of the tour.

First cover of the night was an old classic, You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’, originally recorded by The Righteous Brothers, but also covered by The Human League on their 1979 debut album Reproduction.  It was a chance for Martyn Ware to escape the confines of the keyboard area, and join Glenn in the middle of the stage.  He would soon be back in the safety of his Roland V-Synth GT though!

Closing the main set was Let Me Go, a favourite of Gregory, title track from the debut album Penthouse and Pavement and a barnstorming extended version of the 1983 smash hit Temptation, which nearly lifted the roof from the old venue, crowd participation at its peak and the personnel on stage loving the feedback.  The band took their bows and left the stage for a well-deserved break before returning for a three-track encore.  A second cover of the night, Party Fears Two, was dedicated to Billy McKenzie, the lead singer of Scottish band The Associates, who sadly took his own life in 1997 after a bought of depression.  This was followed by a David Bowie cover, Let’s Dance, hinting to Gregory’s work with Holy Holy, a touring band of ex Bowie acquaintances and final track of the evening Being Boiled, the debut single by The Human League, written by Martyn Ware.  The band left the stage to a rapturous applause, a great evening had by all.

For fans of 80s pop music, this was a tremendous evening.  The music was fab, great vocals by Glenn Gregory supported by backing singers Hayley and Kelly, and keyboards by Martyn Ware alongside Flo Sabeva.  The tunes stand the test of time, with a packed house of fans loving every second and many word perfect on every song.  Time may be marching on, it may well be 40 odd years since the band started out and Gregory has long since swapped the hair gel for the Mr Sheen, but the voice remains the same.  If the band are in town, give in to temptation and see them live.

Last March, a Russian arms maker invited a delegation of Iranians to a VIP shopping tour of its weapons factories. The 17 visitors were treated to lunches and cultural shows and, on the final day, toured a plant that makes products long coveted by Tehran: advanced Russian air defense systems for shooting down enemy planes.

The factory, NPP Start, in the city of Yekaterinburg, is under U.S. sanctions for supporting Russia’s war against Ukraine. Among its wares are mobile launchers and other components for antiaircraft batteries — including Russia’s S-400, which military analysts assess to be capable of detecting and destroying stealth fighter jets flown by Israel and the United States.

A leaked Russian document, part of stolen Iranian emails posted online in February by a hacker group, described the tour as a showcase for “scientific and technical potential and production capabilities” that Russia could offer Iran.

Whether the visit led directly to a purchase is unknown. But the trip is emblematic of what intelligence officials describe as a deepening strategic partnership between Moscow and Tehran in the two years since Russia’s full invasion of Ukraine — an alliance that could emerge as a significant factor as Israeli leaders weigh possible military strikes in retaliation for the hundreds of drones and missiles launched against Israel over the weekend.

Iran opened a dangerous new chapter in its relations with Russia by agreeing in 2022 to supply thousands of battlefield drones and missiles to aid Moscow in its war against Ukraine. The expanded ties have now helped cement agreements between Moscow and Tehran, including a pledge by Russia to provide its ally with advanced fighter jets and air defense technology, assets that could help Tehran harden its defenses against any future airstrike by Israel or the United States, according to U.S., European and Middle Eastern intelligence officials and weapons experts. The officials, like several others interviewed for this article, spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive matters.

It is not known how many of the systems have been provided and deployed, but Russian technology could turn Iran into a far more formidable adversary, with an enhanced ability to shoot down planes and missiles, the officials and experts said.

The weapons deals, some details of which have not been reported previously, are part of a broader collaboration that includes co-production of military drones inside Russia, the sharing of anti-jamming technology, and real-time battlefield assessments of weapons deployed against NATO-equipped forces in Ukraine, the intelligence officials and weapons experts said. The cooperation is reaping substantial benefits for both countries, while elevating Iran’s status from junior ally to strategic partner, they said.

“It’s no longer the patron-client dynamic, where Russia holds all the leverage,” said Hanna Notte, director of the Eurasia Nonproliferation Program at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies. “The Iranians are accruing benefits from this change. The nature of their relationship has gone beyond just getting things. There’s knowledge transfer, there’s intangible gains.”

Intelligence officials described Russia as “advancing” agreements negotiated in secret to supply Iran with Su-35s, one of Russia’s most capable fighter-bombers and a potentially dramatic upgrade for an Iranian air force that consists mainly of rebuilt U.S. and Soviet aircraft dating from before 1979. Russia also pledged to provide technical help with Iranian spy satellites as well as assistance in building rockets to put more satellites into space, the officials said.

There is no public evidence that Su-35s have been delivered; the holdup may be a delay by Iran in paying for the planes, according to a U.S. and a Middle Eastern intelligence official with detailed knowledge of the deal.

On the defensive side of the ledger, Iran has long sought Russia’s top-of-the-line antiaircraft missile batteries to protect its nuclear and military facilities against a possible U.S. or Israeli strike. In 2007, Tehran cut a deal to purchase Russia’s S-300 antiaircraft system, but Moscow delayed supplying the weapons amid pressure from the United States and European powers. The self-imposed ban ended in 2016, and Iranian S-300s became operational in 2019.

Iran has since sought to purchase Russia’s more capable S-400 system, although whether Moscow has moved to provide S-400 batteries is not publicly known.

Some variants of the S-400 are equipped with radars that can defeat stealth technology used by modern warplanes. Russia has deployed the S-400 to protect its military bases in Syria, and the batteries constitute a potentially lethal threat to U.S. and Israeli military aircraft that occasionally operate in Syrian airspace.

An Israeli airstrike on Iran’s consulate in Damascus on April 1 killed two Iranian generals and led directly to Iran’s decision to launch drones and missiles against Israel over the weekend.

Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, the Israel Defense Forces chief of staff, said Monday that Iran’s attack “will be met with a response.”

If delivered, the new Russian antiaircraft missiles and anti-stealth systems, deployed to protect underground bases carved in rocky mountains , would assuredly make Iranian airspace “a more dangerous place,” said Can Kasapoglu, a senior fellow with the Hudson Institute, a Washington think tank.

“This is important at a time when the regime is fast and unchecked moving toward a bomb,” Kasapoglu said. In addition, he said, “any engagement [with Israel] will take place in the Iranian airspace, where Tehran will hold the advantage of playing at home.”

Moscow also is reaping benefits from the collaboration, intelligence officials said. In addition to thousands of drones procured from Iran, Russia agreed late last year to purchase about $2 billion worth of additional military goods, including anti-drone defensive systems that have become a top priority for Russian generals in Ukraine, according to two intelligence officials with detailed knowledge of the deal.

Iran has separately agreed to sell Russia surface-to-surface missiles for use in Ukraine and, according to a new intelligence assessment, is expected to begin transfer of the weapons imminently. Spy agencies have seen no evidence so far that the missiles have been delivered, the officials said.

The production of battlefield drones, meanwhile, has evolved into a joint venture between the two countries, intelligence officials said. Initially, Iran’s provision of drones to Russia was an attempt by Tehran to help its ally plug a hole in its military campaign against Ukraine. Russia, which possessed few battlefield drones at the start of the war, began using two types of Iranian-made Shahed drones in the fall of 2022: the long-range, sweptwing Shahed-131 and the Shahed-136.

By midsummer 2023, Russia was beginning to manufacture Iranian-designed Shahed-136 drones indigenously, at factory in Alabuga, a town in Russia’s Tatarstan region, about 500 miles east of Moscow. Russian documents obtained by The Washington Post last year described plans to manufacture 6,000 drones by summer 2025 to use in its campaign of strikes against Ukrainian forces as well as electricity plants and other vital infrastructure.

Concerned about Russia’s domestic production, the Ukrainian military launched a drone attack of its own against the Alabuga complex on April 2.

More recently, Moscow and Tehran have begun working cooperatively on new kinds of unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVs, according to intelligence officials and leaked documents. The trove of Russian and Iranian emails and records released by the hacking group Prana Network were purportedly stolen from an Iranian server linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps earlier this year.

Among the documents were details of visits by Iranian and Russian delegations to tour weapons facilities in both countries. The Iranians’ trip to the NPP Start factory was described in a Russian “program” for the visit that listed tours of defense facilities in five cities. The document was signed by officials of Technodinamika JSC, which operates NPP Start, as well as the Russian Defense Ministry.

The Post could not independently verify the documents, but two Biden administration officials acknowledged that U.S. intelligence agencies have closely studied the leaked materials and do not dispute their authenticity. Neither Russia nor Iran has publicly responded to the leak.

Several documents describe an April 2023 trip to Iran by a delegation of Russian engineers to watch a demonstration of a new jet-powered drone as well as a line of hunter-killer UAVs designed to destroy enemy drones. Both appeared to impress the visitors.

Variants of the jet-powered drone, dubbed the MS-237, Shahed-238 and Shahed-236, were described as having a maximum speed of about 400 mph — about three times faster than previous iterations of Iranian drones. Tehran revealed the existence of the new drone at an air show in November.

In the demonstration, the jet drone — code-named “motorboat” in the Russians’ internal communications — “successfully took off, accomplished the tasks … and successfully landed by parachute,” a leaked Russian report said. “Given its high speed, the boat is essentially a cruise missile.”

The test apparently helped cement an agreement to acquire more than 600 of the Iranian-designed jet drones, with most of them built on Russian soil with Iranian parts and help, according to the leaked emails. The documents also describe protracted negotiations over how Russia would pay for the drones. At least two installments were to come in the form of gold bullion valued at about $140 million, the documents show.

In January, photos of the remains of a jet-powered drone that appears identical to the MS-237 were posted by Ukraine bloggers after the aircraft reportedly was shot down somewhere over central Ukraine. It is not yet known whether any of the jet drones were launched against Israel in the recent Iranian attack.

“It’s faster, which means it is more difficult to intercept,” said Fabian Hinz, a defense analyst and expert on UAVs and missile systems with the International Institute for Strategic Studies, a London-based think tank. But, he said, the jet drones are “probably also substantially more expensive, because these types of jet engines are tricky to build.”

Producing the drones as a joint production offers substantial benefits for Iran, including the ability to evaluate their performance on Ukrainian battlefields. David Albright, an expert on Iran’s weapon systems and president of the Institute for Science and International Security, a Washington nonprofit, noted that the leaked documents show evidence of Russian engineers incorporating design improvements on Iranian drones.

“Mistakes and flaws in the designs were identified and fixed,” he said, “and Iran would benefit from that.”

Even if Russian systems such as the S-400 have not already been sold to Iran and deployed there, Albright said the sharing of design information and technological expertise could quietly bolster Iran’s capabilities without triggering alarms in the West.

“You might not see anything,” he said.
