Wilson Staff FG Tour M3 irons review

Golfmagic tests out the latest Wilson Staff iron

wilson staff fg tour m3 forged irons review

GOLFMAGIC was afforded the luxury of taking a first look at Wilson Staff's brand new FG Tour M3 range . First club placed in hand was the delightful FG Tour M3 iron , in black PVD finish.

The M3 iron is something a little different and certainly new for Wilson Staff. While we've come to see this sort of finish in an iron several times from other manufacturers, like the PING G25 for example, we've rarely seen it in a forged head like this 8620 carbon steel product.

While Wilson Staff claims the M3 iron is verging on a better player product, I personally believe an 18-capper would thrive on this club. Don't let the thin topline and compact look of this club make you think otherwise!

The FG Tour M3 iron is a direct replacement for the original FG Tour, yet the V2 will remain a current offering, which is pleasing considering just how much I enjoyed it earlier this year in our 10 of the Best: 2013 Player Irons Test .

This revamped model for 2014, however, is slightly larger (longer and taller with a wider sole) and more forgiving than the design it replaces. M3 also has a little more offset and a rounded shape with more sole radius and camber than the original FG Tour.

Looking down on the ball in blazing Surrey sunshine out at Wentworth Golf Club, the FG Tour M3 ticked all the right boxes for appearance. The attractive new dark, non-glare look eliminated reflection and really helped me focus on the shot in hand. A big improvement in the apperance stakes on the much-too-shiny-looking FG Tour V2.

Maybe it's just me, but I also thought the ball looked visually clearer against the black face and that inspired a little more confidence at address.

In terms of feel, the M3 felt particularly sweet. I received a nice muted sound at impact and decent feedback on off-centre hits. When I hit one out the centre, I had to look down to make sure I actually hit the ball. Pure, indeed.

M3 features a progressive cavity design that moves weight lower and further away from the centre of the face in the long irons, perfect for the low ball-flighted player like myself. I enjoyed higher launch with the longer sticks as well as an abundance of forgiveness that I simply couldn't argue with.

The short irons occupy a centre of gravity that is higher in the head and closer to the middle of the face to provide a more penetrating flight and workability, and once again, particularly forgiving. Distance control with the scoring clubs was perfect.

The Standard True Temper Dynamic Gold XP steel shaft felt solid, as always. Higher initial flight with a controlled ball flight perfect for when the wind picks up. The club can also be purchased in Aldila RIP Phenom 95 graphite.

Wilson Staff is well and truly living life in the fast lane right now, and the M3 once again represents a move in the right direction. Great ball flight, great looks and great feel.

FG Tour M3 irons gives you game improvement performance with better player looks, in my book. As I've mentioned before, I think this club will suit golfers from at least an 18-handicap all the way down to pro. These are forged babies for the player transitioning from a traditional game improvement design.

At £599 (4-PW, steel; £699 4-PW, graphite), the FG Tour M3 isn't cheap but I suppose it's about right in the current climate. I believe the M3 is worthy of serious consideration for golfers thinking of buying a new premium set of clubs for 2014. Wilson Staff are very much back in the spotlight.

Wilson FG Tour Forged Irons

Wilson fg tour forged irons .

This forged cavity-back design has the traditional visual cues (thin topline, square toe, minimal progressive offset) that better players look for. Distributing extra weight toward the toe positions the club's center of gravity (CG) directly behind the hitting area. The net effect is greater head stability and precise feedback. CNC-milled grooves and a higher CG (for higher spin rates) round out the package. Read more: http://www.golf.com/golf/equipment/article/0,28136,1951948,00.html#ixzz0iHADJ7wK

I had been sporting Titleist 735 Co's since their inception. I had picked the Fg Tour's up when they first came out in an end of year sale from Golftown. I think that I had paid $400 CDN. I then suffered a significant concussion that took a long time to heal. Close to 3 years. Anyhow, once I had returned to 100% or close to it, I continued to sport the 735's. My garage is a club junkies dream. I had forgotten about the Fg Tour's! Anyhow, I was cleaning out the old clubs and found the FG's. First hit at the range had reminded me as to the reason why I had purchased them. Shot after shot from short iron to long, the explosive and crisp feeling from the ball strike was really moving. It felt fantastic. Both sets have DG S300's. The Fg Tour's were longer, and the ball flight had a great deal of penetrating velocity. There is a micro cavity in the FG's. The top line looks fantastic. Thin, sharp, compact. A tiny amount of offset. The less the better, and these are great. The strike feels like every groove on the club face is grabbing the ball. It's a really nice compression and I find that the shot dispersion is tighter for me than the 735's.

Replaced my PING G5s with these in an attempt to improve my ballstriking. I was looking for a forgiving club with feel and feedback, easily workable but easy to fire straight. GIR and ballstriking have been keeping me from breaking 80 as much as I would like. After a few rounds, I could not be happier with these FG Tours. They're everything I thought they would be, but longer and easier to hit! They have weaker lofts than my G5s, but I'm getting the same distance, with great distance control.. The s300 shaft probably fits my swing better. To those who are considering testing the cavity forged irons from GI and SGI clubs - don't listen to those who say you can't play a forged club because your HC is too high. If you're a 20+, they're probably right.. But if you're learning golf later in life, like I am, you need feel in order to correct your swing flaws (unless you're paying $$$$ for lessons). These irons have helped me slow my tempo and have let me know I am a heel striker.. after adjustments to my swing, I'm striking the ball better than ever, and am learning to play a nice fade - sticking more greens, and my missed greens are easier up-n-downs. Wilson is top-notch and probably the best value in golf.

Have not had to use.

Hit in bays - PING i10, G10, G15, G20; Cobra S2 Forged. Clubs I have owned - Wilson Ci7, Di9, Di11; Taylormade OS2, R7 Draw; PING i5,G5; Callaway Big Bertha; Titleist DCI

Better players are drawn to the classic Wilson muscleback design renowned for its delicate balance of sleek look, soft feel and shot-shaping ability. A closer look reveals this modern innovation: a slightly larger head, a lower muscle slot and a wider, cambered sole. The '62. A modern classic.

Last year I had a few lessons with the local golf pro and by the end of the final lesson I went from hitting a draw to a nice high fade which was my intention. My previous irons were the Cobra FP (2008) models. They were good clubs with great distance but as with any GI iron, the distance consistency suffers. Also, the stock Nippon stiff shaft had become too weak as I was told I loaded the club heavily at the top and needed a stiffer shaft. I decided to go shopping and stumbled across the Wilson FG Tour Irons with the TT DG S300 shaft. I hit them for about 30 minutes on the monitor and was sold, but with reservations. I decided to trade in the Cobras and went right to the range. I did not hit them superbly at first but knew it would take time. Once I got them dialed in I knew I made the right choice. My first round playing with them I hit a few shanks, but it was the Indian not the arrow. But when I did put a good swing on it, the ball just whistled off the face with a nice boring trajectory for each club. Will still take a little more time but I can see where these will help my swing and scores in the future.

Not used yet but I hear Wilson is great.

Cobra FP, Cleveland CG4, Taylormade RAC, Callaway BB, Callaway Fusion, and more.

Great set of irons, you can work the ball with ease. They are very forgiving without being harsh on miss hits. I gained abut 5 yards per club with these but the amount of control I gained is the best part of these clubs. If you are a person that would like to drop those extra few strokes to shoot in the 70's these are your clubs.

Taylormade R7,Macgregor M565

Solid iron with a great compact head and sets up nice. Long irons are very usable. Great to have a forged head in the bag again. Easy to dial in and pure hits are rewarded with great tactile sensation. Mis-hits aren't penal. A/B tested with Mizuno MP 62 and found these comparable. Limited offset made these easy to accurately line up. I like the looks.

Wilson Demo guys were very helpful in getting me into the right club. Will bend these upright a degree eventually but have already played two of my best rounds of the year with these.

Moved up from Wilson Pi7's and Cleveland CG2's...Crisper feeling of forged and more reliable clubbing distances. Compact head allows me to get through thick grass in a way not possible with the cast clubs.

Most of you probably know me as the most solid player on this review board. I'm the best ballstriker you'll see around here. I tried the FG Tour out on the range and I must say that I have finally found a club good enough for my swing. These clubs look great at address and feel great when you hit the ball solidly. Beautiful clubs. I will get a set for free because the rep will do whatever I say. I'm the best. I don't want to see a bunch of 80's and 90's shooters giving reviews about this iron. You hacks need to take some lessons first before you go spouting off about an iron you shouldn't be hitting in the first place. Choppers stay away! Clubs are cool, almost as cool as me. Later.

I've used many. That's all i have to say about that.

I have been playing the M3s for a few years and absolutely love them but alas, i am a club ho and want to upgrade. The next obvious set is the F5s, which I've hit at the PGASS and liked a lot. They only have a 7 iron to demo though. I have been playing wilson irons for a while but i have a bit of a wandering eye for other brands.

I am 10-12 handicap and generally will buy used/previous model stuff to save money as i am just a poor kid from the mountains.

Anybody have any suggeations on what irons may be similar playing to the M3s but be a good next step? I am ready for something with similar playing characters but with a bit leas offset.

Maybe srixon Z745s? Maybe just grab the F5s?

Wilson is very underrated. F5s are a greater ay to go if you stay with Wilson. Reduced offset from the M3, but all the other benefits.

Very underrated set of irons the M3's, the Srixons you mentioned are nice but a different soul grind which you might like or like me not get on with.

Depends on if you want to venture into more of a players iron or something similar?, The new pings are somewhere in the middle ground but would be lacking in feel

Driver = Callaway Smoke-Ai Max-D

3 wood = Callaway Smoke-Ai Max HL

3 Hybrid = Tour Edge Exotics C722 Irons = 4-PW Miura KM 700 Gap Wedge = Miura HB 50*

Sand Wedge = Taylormade MG2 56*

Putter = LAB DF3

Ball = TP5x pix

Yep. The M3s are by far the best set of irons i have ever played. The F5s seem like the obvious next step. I would not be disappointed with them at all. I mentioned the srixons mainly because i have a pretty steep swing and from what i understand the v-sole grind is good for that.

Well, i went and hit the F5s again today. I also hit the Z545, Z565, Z745, Z765 and the FG tour V6.

Good god the V6! Those are probably the best feeling irons ive ever hit. All the Srixon offerings felt good as well but in the end i had the best control with the F5s and by far the best feel with the V6s. The F5s felt pretty dang good as well. Checked ebay and found the F5s new in plastic and was able to pick them up for $380. Seemed like a no brainer so i guess that is where i go next.

I see some V6s in my future as well.....

Did you ever hit the V4s? Wondering how much different the v6s are.

I did hit the V4s but its been a while. Form what i remember about the V4s compared to the V6 i hit today i would say the V6 is a slight upgrade in feel and forgiveness but the V4s are great irons.

I like the M3 and agree that Wilson is very underrated. To keep the discussion going despite you having decided on the F5s, the Mizuno JPX EZ Forged irons are a nice option as a GI forged iron. They are very sweet. You may be able to find some "prior year" clubs for a bit less. Enjoy your F5s.

One of my playing partners just picked up a set of JPX EZ forged 800 and I've hit them a few times. I agres that they are nice irons. Super easy to hit and they feel fantastic. I have also hit the JPX 900 hotmetal and those are great as well. I would game them for sure.

My F5s got here today. Here are a few pics of them next to my M3s. Cant wait to get them out to play in the cold and rain tomorrow.

Old thread for sure but I'm researching a still new set of M3's...versus V5 or V6....curious if you might have an update after having played the V5's now for a year? Could you possibly expand on any differences in regards to distance and feel? Thanks!

The F5's lasted a few months. I have moved on to the V6's and they aren't going anywhere any time soon. if you have a chance to get the M3s and a great price I would jump on it. they are so soft and easy to hit. I love the V6s. they are almost as easy to hit as the M3s. I have lost about a club of distance which is no big deal to me. I wouldn't hesitate to game another set of M3s though. the F5s just didn't have the same feel. I was a bit disappointed in them. tey are nice sticks but the M3s are better in my opinion and the V6s are outstanding.

Wilson Staff FG Tour M3 driver review

Wilson Staff has added the option of changing the weight of the head in the new M3 driver. This might sound intimidating at first, but it’s easy to do and the changes in flight are clear to see when the weight is changed. It’s also great fun to experiment with the different settings available. Two shaft options are offered as standard, which produce contrasting ball flights, so a fitting is highly recommended. The new matte ice finish on the crown looks fantastic at address.

Some simply won’t want this many options to alter the set-up.

Our test team gives its thoughts on the Wilson Staff FG Tour M3 driver

Wilson Staff FG Tour M3 driver review:

This is the first adjustable Wilson Staff driver. The loft can be moved down one degree or up two degrees, and the driver comes with three head weight options. The three-gram is ‘Superlight’, to maximise clubhead speed; the seven-gram is the ‘Right Light’, which engineers say is the perfect balance; and the 11-gram offers ‘Traditional’ weighting.

Will suit: players looking to tweak flight and control spin.

The prototype irons have more offset and are marginally larger than the company’s FG Tour V2 irons currently played by Kevin Streelman and Padraig Harrington, which makes them a little more forgiving. They also have wider soles with more camber than the V2’s, and a black PVD finish instead of the V2’s chrome finish.

Vrska said that Streelman, Harrington, Ricky Barnes and Jim Herman have been testing the irons on the PGA Tour since February of this year. Their feedback has resulted in minor tweaks such as slightly less offset and changes to the sole. Overall, Vrska said that the players have been very pleased with the shape of the irons, but he expects more tweaks to be made before a design is finalized.

When the irons are released, Vrska said that they won’t replace any of the company’s current offerings — they’re an effort to bolster the amount of “better player” forged irons.

“These are filling out our range,” Vrska said.

I like the design and finish, but appears to have a lot of offset. I like the sole. I play the original FG Tours and have played my best golf ever with them but they have a sharp leading edge which is challenging on some lies. The new model looks a little less severe. I’ll definitely try them when they hit the market.

Wow, those irons look pretty good. Vrska was the lead designer on one of the best irons I’ve ever played, the Adams CB2s. You can see similarities to the CB2s in these new irons. I bet they feel great too.

That’s because TM writes him a large check every week that it’s in the bag… as they do for EVERY tour player that puts their driver in play every single week. And that includes Monday qualifier no-names as well. PH’s Wilson contract doesn’t require driver usage so why not make some easy extra money every week?

Spotted: Tommy Fleetwood’s TaylorMade Spider Tour X Prototype putter

wilson staff fg tour m3 forged irons review

Tommy Fleetwood has been attached to his Odyssey White Hot Pro #3 putter for years now. However, this week at the Wells Fargo Championship, we did spot him testing a new putter that is very different, yet somewhat similar, to his current gamer.

This new putter is a TaylorMade Spider Tour X head but with a brand new neck we haven’t seen on a Spider before. A flow neck is attached to the Spider head and gives the putter about a 1/2 shaft offset. This style neck will usually increase the toe hang of the putter and we can guess it gets the putter close to his White Hot Pro #3.

wilson staff fg tour m3 forged irons review

Another interesting design is that lack of TaylorMade’s True Path alignment on the top of the putter. Instead of the large white center stripe, Tommy’s Spider just has a very short white site line milled into it. As with his Odyssey, Tommy seems to be a fan of soft inserts and this Spider prototype looks to have the TPU Pure Roll insert with 45° grooves for immediate topspin and less hopping and skidding.

The sole is interesting as well in that the rear weights don’t look to be interchangeable and are recessed deep into the ports. This setup could be used to push the CG forward in the putter for a more blade-like feel during the stroke, like TaylorMade did with the Spider X Proto Scottie Scheffler tested out.

wilson staff fg tour m3 forged irons review

Tommy’s putter is finished off with an older Super Stroke Mid Slim 2.0 grip in blue and white. The Mid Slim was designed to fit in between the Ultra Slim 1.0 and the Slim 3.0 that was a popular grip on tour.
