How to be a respectful traveler [World Tourism Day]

world tourism day dress code

Today is World Tourism Day! Each year, the World Tourism Organization focuses on raising awareness of tourism’s social, cultural, political and economic value. The day is also meant to serve as a reminder of sustainable and mindful travel. Today we thought we’d dive in to some great tips on how to be a respectful visitor abroad, provided by both experts and API alumni.

1. Do some research

Not only should you look into the history of the country you’re visiting, you should also make sure you’re aware of local customs. This includes everything from expectations of tipping to public displays of affection. There are also expectations of dress to keep in mind, too. For example, the Vatican has a dress code for both men and women, and mosques in the UAE will expect women to wear an abaya.

2. Learn some of the local language

This is especially easy to do when you study abroad, even if the classes you’re taking are in your native language. Many programs offer language classes in their curriculum. In addition, program providers (like API) have language exchange options in some locations. This typically involves meeting a local on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to chat with each other and learn more about each other’s languages.

At the very least, head into a new country with a few basic phrases under your belt. You’ll be very grateful to know how to ask where a restroom is, and the person you ask will be grateful that they don’t have to guess what you’re saying!

3. Live with a host family

world tourism day dress code

Host family placements are a fantastic way to be a respectful and mindful traveler! There is no better way to fully immerse yourself in a new country. You’ll learn more about the similarities and differences between your culture and another. In addition, host families are paid a stipend to help provide for your meals, laundry service and more. Your decision to live with a family also helps that family make a living! Some of our alumni who have chosen to go the host family route have said it was the best part of their experience.

If you do choose this option, be sure to be a respectful guest! Clean up after yourself where you can and offer to help with dishes or other housework. As a thank you to your host family, consider bringing a gift from your home country or offering to make them a favorite meal from your childhood.

4. Mind your surroundings

No matter how carefully you plan a trip abroad, there’s going to come a moment when you’re a bit lost or turned around! In these situations, though, make sure you’re still aware of the people around you. Try not to stop in the middle of a crowded sidewalk to take a look at your map or phone. Avoid blocking busy crosswalks or local businesses. Remember, you may be on the trip of a lifetime, but most of the people around you are trying to go about their daily routines. Minding your surroundings is also a great way to stay safe while traveling abroad!

5. Support local & give back

When you’re in a new place and feeling overwhelmed, seeing a Starbucks or McDonald’s can be a welcome sight. But try not to get in the habit of eating at big chain restaurants you can eat at home. Find local cafes or breakfast joints for your morning cup of coffee, and be sure to try out local restaurants around the area. Valuing local foods and customs is a great way to express appreciation to your host country.

In addition, take some time out of your travels to give back to the community. At API, we put together API Gives Back projects each semester. These volunteer projects vary. From painting schools in Santiago to running a 5k for breast cancer research in Bilbao, it’s important to us that our students and interns have the opportunity to say “thank you” to their host country in some way.

Other ways to be a sustainable traveler

The World Monuments Fund has a sustainable travel pledge you can sign. By doing so, you’re committing to do even more when you go abroad: conserve natural resources, offset your carbon footprint, and visiting lesser-known attractions that aren’t in danger due to overtourism .

Happy World Tourism Day!

More than 40 years celebrating this important economic sector

Tourism is one of the world’s most important economic sectors. It employs one in every ten people on Earth and provides livelihoods to hundreds of millions more. For some countries, it can represent over 20 percent of their GDP.

It allows people to experience some of the world’s cultural and natural riches and brings people closer to each other, highlighting our common humanity.

Tourism is an essential pillar of the  2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development  and the commitment to our Sustainable Development Goals, especially  goals 8 ,  12 , and  14 . It serves as a first  entry point to the world of work , especially for women, youth, migrant workers, and rural populations in developing and least developed countries (LDCs). Women represent a majority of the tourism sector workforce, while half of that workforce is under 25 years of age. Moreover, in many parts of the world, the protection of biodiversity and conservation rely heavily on the tourism sector and the revenue it generates.

The constant growth of the tourism sector during the last six decades reflects more progressive access to tourism thanks to the decline in the cost of transport and the world-wide growth of the middle classes. The recognition of the right to holidays in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the improved adoption of labor rights in many countries have also supported its development. These factors also serve as a backdrop for the resilience shown by tourism in recent years. The sector has experienced almost uninterrupted growth despite challenges such as the global economic crisis and natural disasters.

The many important contributions of tourism encouraged the   UN World Tourism Organization  ( UNWTO ) to institute World Tourism Day in a meeting that took place in Spain, commencing the first celebration of the observance in the year 1980. This date was chosen to coincide with an important milestone in world tourism: the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the UNWTO Statutes on 27 September 1970.

Afterwards, during its 70th session in 2015, the United Nations General Assembly designated 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development (resolution  A/RES/70/193 ), in which it encouraged support for sustainable tourism as a means of promoting and accelerating sustainable development, especially poverty eradication.

  • Awareness: Established by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in 1980, this day serves to raise awareness about the importance of tourism and its impact on societies worldwide.
  • Economic Impact: Tourism is one of the major revenue sources for many countries. It helps stimulate economic growth, provides employment opportunities, and drives the development of infrastructure.
  • Cultural Exchange: Tourism promotes the exchange of cultures. It allows people from various parts of the world to understand, appreciate, and learn from diverse cultures, traditions, and ways of life. This can foster global understanding and peace.
  • Education and Enlightenment: Travel broadens the mind. Through tourism, people get firsthand experiences of places, histories, and traditions, which can be a form of education outside the conventional classroom environment.
  • Sustainable Development: In recent years, the concept of sustainable tourism, which respects both local communities and the traveler, cultural heritage, and the environment, has come to the forefront. World Tourism Day often emphasizes the significance of sustainable tourism and its role in ensuring that the benefits of tourism reach every corner of the world.

Each year, a theme is chosen for World Tourism Day that reflects the current issues, challenges, and trends in the tourism industry. This theme guides discussions, events, and celebrations related to the day.

UNIS/SGSM/1348 22 September 2023

The Secretary-General

Message for world tourism day, “tourism and green investment”, 27 september 2023.

Tourism is a powerful force for progress and mutual understanding. But in order to deliver its full benefits, this force must be protected and nurtured.

Today, the climate emergency is threatening many travel destinations and the very survival of communities and economies that depend on tourism. And many developing countries that are severely affected by a changing climate are also facing a growing investment deficit and a cost-of-living crisis.

On this World Tourism Day, we recognize the vital need for green investments to build a tourism sector that delivers for people and planet.

Governments and businesses must invest in sustainable and resilient tourism practices. Private actors must adopt zero-emission pathways, lower their energy consumption and leverage renewable forms of energy. And everyone must protect the biodiversity and ecological balance of all destinations.

Targeted investments can deliver jobs and support local businesses and industries while mitigating the environmental impacts of tourism, empowering communities, promoting their cultures, and contributing to essential social protection systems.

So let us all do more to harness the full potential of sustainable tourism. Because investing in sustainable tourism is investing in a better future for all.

11 Of The World’s Most Unusual Dress Codes

A s seasoned travelers know, packing the right attire is essential for any trip. However, beyond the usual considerations of climate and personal style, there are a host of unexpected dress codes that can catch even the most experienced globetrotter off guard.

From sartorial restrictions rooted in tradition to quirky cultural norms, these unique dress codes offer a fascinating glimpse into diverse customs and practices around the world .

Bhutan’s Kira: A National Embrace of Tradition

In the secluded Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, women wear a traditional ankle-length wrap-around dress known as a kira in public settings. This colorful and elegant garment, often adorned with intricate weaving patterns, symbolizes national identity and cultural preservation. Tourists can wear other types of clothing. However, respecting local customs by dressing modestly and avoiding revealing clothing shows respect to the local community.

Sudan’s Trouser Ban: A Reflection of Cultural Norms

In Sudan, a conservative Islamic society, women dress modestly, with loose-fitting and non-revealing clothing being the norm. However, one particularly unusual dress code restriction applies to women’s attire: trousers are inappropriate for women in public spaces. While not strictly enforced, this unwritten rule reflects the country’s strong adherence to traditional gender norms.

Spain’s Sandal Ban: A Safety-First Approach

Driving with sandals or flip-flops is a traffic infraction in Spain that can result in a fine. This apparently odd rule is for safety considerations since loose footwear might easily fall off the pedals, perhaps resulting in an accident. Local authorities don’t fine tourists for driving in sandals. However, following local customs and wearing closed-toe shoes shows respect and awareness of Spanish cultural standards.

Greece’s High Heel Ban: Keeping Historical Sites Safe

Visitors can’t wear high heels to several historical and ancient sites in Greece. This approach intends to safeguard the integrity of old structures and to protect fragile mosaics and floors. While some may find the restriction unpleasant, it emphasizes the significance of conserving Greece’s historical legacy for future generations to enjoy.

Nepal: No Shoes Are Allowed on Sacred Mountains

Wearing shoes on sacred mountains, such as Mount Everest, is considered disrespectful in Nepal. This is due to the fact that the mountains are regarded as holy, and shoes might indicate contamination or impurity. Before mounting the mountain, visitors must remove their shoes.

Japan: No Footwear inside Homes or Religious Sites

It is considered quite impolite to wear shoes inside a house or a place of worship in Japan. This is due to the fact that shoes frequently track in dirt and dust, which might be considered impolite in areas that have been cleaned. Before entering a private residence or a place of worship, guests are required to take their shoes off.

Thailand: No Bare Shoulders or Knees in Temple

When entering a temple in Thailand, visitors should cover their shoulders and legs out of respect for the building. This is because some temples are sacred places, and visitors should dress modestly. Wearing long pants and long-sleeved shirts is the most effective strategy to safeguard against any wardrobe mishaps.

Italy: No Shorts or Swimwear in Bathing Suit Zones

In Italy, it is customary to remove shorts and swimwear before entering bars, restaurants, and shops, even if they are located near beaches or swimming pools. This practice is respectful and prevents the spread of sand or water into establishments.

Vatican City: A Sanctuary of Modesty

As the heart of the Catholic Church, Vatican City upholds a strict dress code that reflects its sacred status. Visitors should dress modestly, covering their shoulders and knees. Local authorities prohibit shorts, sleeveless shirts, and miniskirts. This measure ensures a sense of reverence and respect within the holy city’s boundaries, according to the Vatican.

Barbados: A Ban on Military Mimicry

In Barbados, civilians can’t wear camouflage clothing. This unusual restriction stems from the association of camouflage with military attire and the potential for its misuse in unauthorized activities. The ban aims to maintain a peaceful and orderly environment for all residents and visitors.

Saudi Arabia: Abaya and Headscarves

Saudi Arabia maintains a strict dress code deeply rooted in Islamic tradition. For women, the abaya, a long black cloak, and the hijab, a headscarf, are essential attire in public spaces. These garments promote modesty and align with the conservative interpretation of Islamic law in Saudi society. Respect for these dress code norms is crucial for female travelers, as it reflects the country’s values and allows them to participate in public life. Men are also expected to wear modest clothing, such as loose-fitting attire.

Disney World Dress Code: 10 Hacks That Will Keep You Stylish All Day!

  • Robert Fisher

Plan My Trip

Table of Contents

If you're planning a trip to Disney World, you're probably excited about all the rides, characters, and shows you'll get to experience. But have you thought about what you're going to wear? Disney has a dress code that you'll want to keep in mind when planning your outfits. But don't worry, we've got you covered with these 10 Disney World dress code hacks that will keep you stylish and comfy all day long! As a rule of thumb, check the Walt Disney World website prior to your visit to ensure you are not dress coded during your stay.

1. Wear comfortable shoes

You'll be doing a lot of walking at Disney World , so it's important to wear comfortable shoes. Sneakers or other closed-toe shoes with good arch support are a great choice. Avoid flip-flops or sandals, as they can be uncomfortable and aren't allowed on some rides. So pack your favorite star wars tennis shoes, but leave the slippers at home!

2. Dress in multiple layers

Florida can be hot and humid, but some indoor areas, like restaurants and shops, can be chilly due to air conditioning. Dress in layers so you can adjust your outfit accordingly. A light jacket or cardigan is a good option.

3. Choose breathable fabrics

Again, Florida can be hot and humid, so choose fabrics that are breathable and moisture-wicking, like cotton or linen. Avoid heavy fabrics that can make you feel hot and sticky.

4. Wear hats and sunglasses

Protect your skin and eyes from the sun by wearing a hat and sunglasses. A wide-brimmed hat can also keep you cool by shading your face and neck.

5. Follow Disney's guidelines for costumes

While Disney encourages guests to dress up in costumes, there are guidelines that you'll need to follow. Costumes must be family-friendly and not obstructive, offensive, or violent. They also can't contain any weapons, including toy weapons.

6. Consider bringing a change of clothes

If you plan on riding water rides or getting wet in any way, consider bringing a change of clothes. You don't want to spend the rest of the day in damp or uncomfortable clothing especially at water park theme parks.

7. Choose functional accessories

When it comes to accessories, choose ones that are both stylish and functional. A backpack or crossbody bag is a great way to carry your essentials, and a fanny pack is a trendy option. Opt for a watch instead of relying on your phone for the time.

8. Dress for the occasion

While you'll want to be comfortable, you'll also want to dress appropriately for the occasion in family. If you're dining at a fancy restaurant, for example, the disney's grand floridian resort, you'll want to dress up a bit more than if you're spending the day in the parks. It is best to avoid obscene language, clothing that exposes excessive portions, muscle shirts or anything that is obscene toward disney cast members.

9. Embrace Walt Disney World -themed outfits

If you're a fan of Disney, embrace the opportunity to wear themed outfits. Disneybounding, which involves creating outfits inspired by Disney characters, is a popular trend among Disney fans. You could also wear a shirt or hat with your favorite Disney character on it, so, pack the proper attire including shoes and shirts compliant with disney's dress code and do not allude to offensive language, or clothing that is considered inappropriate. Person wearing attire can be asked to leave at the park entry or any time throughout your visit.

10. Have fun!

At the end of the day, the most important thing is to have fun and enjoy your time at Walt Disney World. Don't stress too much about what you're wearing. As long as you're comfortable and following the disney dress code guidelines, you'll be able to focus on the magic of Disney without being dress coded.

Q: Can I wear flip-flops or sandals at Disney World? A: While they're not prohibited, they're not recommended due to safety concerns on some rides. Closed-toe shoes with good arch support are a better choice for your trip to Walt Disney World resort. Wear proper attire that are considered appropriate for walking.

Q: Can I wear a costume to Disney World? A: Yes, but there are guidelines you'll need to follow. Costumes must be family-friendly and can't be obstructive, offensive, or violent. They also can't contain any weapons, so be sure to check the disney dress code in advance. You do not want to risk this, as theme parks hold the right to deny admission to any guests wearing such attire.

Q: What kind of hat should I wear at Disney World? A: A wide-brimmed hat is a good choice to protect your face and neck from the sun. Baseball caps are also a popular option. Just be sure to choose one that's comfortable and stays securely on your head throughout your time at disney parks. As a general rule, guests should be aware of attire that could detract at any given time throughout the visit and be aware of the family oriented environment.

Q: What should I wear to signature dining locations at Disney World? A: Signature restaurants have detailed dress code for the specific restaurant you're visiting, but in general, business casual attire is appropriate. This could mean a dress or skirt and blouse for women, and slacks and a collared shirt for men.

Subject to change based on Disney dining establishments. It is best practice to avoid t-shirts, tank tops, cut offs and opt for something more formal such as collared shirts, tie front shirt, dress pants, dress shorts and dinner jackets for signature dining restaurants and special events. excessively torn clothing is not permitted at any Walt Disney World park entry and will result in dress coded measures.

Q: Can I bring a bag on rides at Disney World? A: Some rides have restrictions on what you can bring on board. Check the signage near the ride entrance, or ask a cast member for guidance. In general, backpacks or crossbody bags are a good choice, as they're secure and won't get in the way. Walt Disney company is not responsible for items left or stored at any of the rides, so please be sure to remember your items and pack light for your visit.

Walt Disney World Resort

In conclusion, dressing for a day at Disney World doesn't have to be stressful. By following these 10 dress code hacks, you'll be able to stay stylish and comfortable all day long. Remember to prioritize comfort and functionality, and don't be afraid to embrace your love for Disney through your outfit choices.

With a little planning, you can focus on the magic of Disney and create memories that will last a lifetime. For any further questions regarding the dress code, please refer to the walk Disney world website to ensure you dress for a standard family environment clothing and Disney experience.

Whether you are spending your day at the Magic Kingdom, water parks, or Animal Kingdom , guests are most often found to be wearing shoes, t-shirt, and shorts as ground clothing for a memorable trip. Please, use common sense when deciding on appropriate attire. For visits to other parks and resorts such as Disney Springs , and the Boardwalk Inn, it is best to wear objectionable material.

The World Naked Bike Ride Is Happening on 4/20 in San Francisco

Please try again

A group of men and women in varying stages of nudity ride bikes together up a road.

Ah, April 20. A hallowed day on the Bay Area calendar that has long been used to celebrate marijuana in all its forms and glory. Well, this year, the very stoned humans of San Francisco can celebrate the day by bearing witness to scores of cyclists who’ll be baring it all on bicycles. That’s right! This year’s World Naked Bike Ride falls on 4/20. Which almost — almost! — makes up for the cancellation of Golden Gate Park’s annual Hippie Hill event .

As usual, the city’s wheelie nude adventure will start at the giant bow and arrow in Rincon Park — Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen’s Cupid’s Span . It will then sojourn past Chase Center and Oracle Park, head up to North Beach, circle back past City Hall, before heading on over to the Haight and ending in the Castro. All told, the ride lasts 16.5 miles and finishes with a naked party at (of all places) Castro Street’s Gyro Xpress . (Careful where you drop that tzatziki, riders!)

Naked Bike Ride organizers ask that cyclists keep inside the right lane as much as possible, refrain from throwing objects at passing cars, and make sure bicycles are fully tuned before the ride starts.

A group of naked people riding bicycles, led by two women wearing strategically placed body paint.

For those cyclists thinking about participating, but nervous about going full birthday suit, don’t worry. While full nudity is encouraged, an ethos of “as bare as you dare” is embraced as well. Organizers even suggest bringing transparent ponchos or windbreakers in case of rain, which is currently forecast on the day.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the World Naked Bike Ride, which was started by Conrad Schmidt in Vancouver, Canada. Since then, cyclists in 36 countries around the globe have been taking the annual opportunity to protest climate change and highlight the vulnerability of cyclists and pedestrians. The ride also seeks to endorse body positivity, community building and renewable energy.

The April 20 ride was organized specifically to coincide with Earth Day (April 22). The Northern Hemisphere chapters of World Naked Bike Ride — including San Francisco — will also ride on June 8, 2024. Plenty of time, then, should you need to make an extra cushion for your saddle…

San Francisco’s World Naked Bike Ride leaves Rincon Park (Embarcadero and Folsom) at noon on April 20, 2024. The full route is available online now.
