Wrigley Field Tours: Seeing Cubs History Up Close

Aug 07, 2018

When it comes to Chicago landmarks, perhaps none is so loved as Wrigley Field.

Step inside this historic stadium on a Wrigley Field Tour  and learn what makes this ballpark unique from guides who bleed Cubbie blue.

On these 75- to 90-minute tours, you will have the opportunity to sit in the fan-favorite bleachers, view the field from the press box, enter the clubhouses where your favorite players have been, and even step out onto the hallowed field.  Whether you’re a fan of the Chicago Cubs, baseball in general, or just Chicago history, the 90 minutes you'll spend on a Wrigley Field tour is time well spent. Here’s a few highlights from my recent game-day tour.

NOTE : Game day tours — like mine — allow for stops at the 100-level seats that are closest to the field; the Budweiser bleachers; upper-deck seating; and a chance to walk on the field just behind home plate. Non-game day tours, which cost an additional $10, allow for stops at all of the above, as well as the Cubs’ dugout, the visitors’ clubhouse, and the press box.

Gathering just outside of the new The Park at Wrigley prior to our 9 a.m. tour, the energy was high. Visitors from Chicago, Detroit, New Jersey, Texas, and even Brazil were all eager to soak up the knowledge behind the brick and ivy — and yes, that is the same ivy that was planted in 1937. Even as a die-hard  White Sox  fan, I was excited to get a behind-the-scenes look at the park where Babe Ruth hit his famous called shot, where there is still a hand-operated scoreboard, and where at one point the record was held for most NFL games in a single stadium.

Stepping onto Wrigley Field

One question many have when taking a Wrigley Field tour: can I step onto the field? Turns out you can — just not onto the grass. Our journey started with the opportunity to take photos on the field near the on-deck circle and behind home plate.

As we meandered our way down the bleachers, up the ramps, and to the upper decks, the guide totally immersed us with fascinating info. Who knew the location was originally a Lutheran Seminary? That the once-abandoned lot was purchased for $250,000 and ready for opening day in 1914 after just five weeks of construction? That every sport has been played on the field (including ski jumping)? Or that the team’s original name was supposed to be the Chicago Chickens? We also learned about two staples of American sporting events that were started right here at Wrigley: concession stands and the playing of the singing of the National Anthem before games.

Slices of Wrigley History

Perhaps the most interesting story was the origin of the phrase “that came out of left field.” Legend has it that this phrase was born at the ballpark the Cubs played at before Wrigley was built (it’s actually on DePaul University’s campus). Beyond the left field wall was a psychiatric hospital. The building was without air conditioning, so in the summer the windows would be open. Some of the patients would watch the game and some would occasionally make strange noises that, to the fans… came out of left field.

Another fun fact: the colors of Wrigley Field's famous marquee came from a request by legendary Chicago Bears coach George Halas (the Bears played at Wrigley from 1921 to 1970). Originally painted green and gold, the marquee had to be changed to Cubbie blue and white when Halas lobbied the Wrigley family to repaint it, as its colors were too close to a dreaded rival: the Green Bay Packers.

Next up was a trip to the famous bleachers, where we learned more stadium history. Beyond the famous ivy growing on the outfield walls, one of Wrigley Field's most recognizable landmarks is the iconic manual scoreboard at center field. To this day, men spend each game climbing ladders inside the scoreboard, changing the score to reflect the action on field and around the leagues.

We also got a fascinating history lesson in the flags around the top of the stadium. The Cubs have a history of not winning many pennants (until 2016, of course), so the flags commemorate special dates and records at Wrigley, including players’ single-season achievements. Examples include the 20 KW flag for Kerry Wood and the inspiring JR 42, which flies in honor of Jackie Robinson, as Wrigley Field is the last standing stadium in which he played. The high point of visiting the bleachers was the story of the “bleacher bum” races. I won't ruin the fun here — but if you've ever wondered why there are now baskets that run below the outfield walls, you'll love it when the guide explains the reasons why.

Our last stop on our game day tour was a trek to upper deck — a perfect end to this engaging tour, seeing the tens of thousands of empty green seats as grounds crew prepared for today’s game. It was a refreshing change of pace from the bustle of a baseball game. Standing there, looking out over this hallowed ballpark, now empty and calm, as if paying reverence to its generations of cheering crowds, only added to my appreciation of its rich history.

How to Get Tickets Pearl Jam Ten Club Members-Only Presale powered by Ticketmaster Request

What is ticketmaster request.

Pearl Jam is using Ticketmaster Request to power this fan club presale. Ticketmaster Request is a simple way to request tickets to popular shows, so you don’t have to compete in a first-come, first-served sale. You can take your time to review the available options and request the right tickets for you. All you need to do is tell us which show(s) you’re interested in, the type of ticket you want and your payment details. If tickets that match your request are available, your card will be charged, and we’ll email you instructions on how to view them. Note: each show you are confirmed for will be charged separately by Ticketmaster; the charge will appear as Ticketmaster*Pearl Jam.

How does the Ten Club ticket request work?

Complete your request in three easy steps. First, tell us what shows and tickets you’re interested in. Then, provide a credit card to complete your ticket request. If your request is fulfilled, your card will be charged and we’ll email you a confirmation with instructions on how to view your tickets during the week of February 19. Note: tickets will not show in your Ticketmaster account until all seating assignments are finalized.

How do I unlock access to the Ten Club ticket request?

Eligible Ten Club members will receive an email from Ten Club with the info. You can also find the presale info on the Ten Club Member News page. The Ten Club ticket request is for eligible Ten Club members only with active membership accounts as of Monday, February 12, 2024.

Is there a cutoff date to become a Ten Club member for the ticket request presale?

Yes. All fans must be a Ten Club paid member, current as of Monday, February 12, 2024. However, all fans can register for the chance to access the general sale on February 23 — tap here to get started.

Can I request tickets for more than one city?

Yes. By submitting a ticket request for any show, you are committing to purchase the ticket(s) should your request be fulfilled. For example, if you enter for five shows, it is possible your request can be fulfilled for all five shows in which case your credit card will immediately be charged for tickets to all five shows. However, you can only purchase up to two Ten Club tickets for each individual show. All tickets will be non-transferable in all states except where it is prohibited by law.

Can I get tickets to both shows in a city that has multiple performance dates?

Yes. For cities where there are two performance dates, you can request and may be confirmed for both shows, except in New York, where you can only be confirmed for one show.

Why can I no longer prioritize my shows?

Based on fan feedback, the prioritization tool caused confusion. Only request tickets for shows you can definitely attend.

My friend and I are both Ten Club Members. We both want to request a pair of tickets each. Can we both submit our requests using the same Ticketmaster account?

No, each member must request tickets using their own Ticketmaster account.

How will tickets be determined for Ten Club members?

To level the playing field, ticket requests are fulfilled in a randomized selection process. If selected for seated tickets, tickets will be assigned based on Ten Club seniority within the purchased price level.

Where are the tickets located?

Ten Club tickets are located in a variety of ticket types and locations. We anticipate greater demand for tickets than are tickets available. To better your chances of getting Ten Club tickets, select as many ticket options as you are willing to purchase.

What is the GA Pit or Reserved - Standing or Seating option?

Select this option if you are willing to stand in GA or sit through the show as you may be selected for either. If selected for GA standing tickets, you will receive early entry at a predetermined GA only door, at venues where early entry is permitted. If selected for Reserved Seating, your tickets will be assigned based on seniority in Ten Club.

What is the Reserved - Seating option?

In most venues, Ten Club reserved seated tickets will be available in two price levels. Reserved seated tickets are assigned to members based on seniority in the Ten Club within the purchased price level and will start closest to the stage extending back and include seats down on the arena floor. Ten Club ticketed areas will be highlighted on the seating chart during the ticket request process. Due to high demand at many of these shows, Ten Club seats can be located in some of the upper sections. Members with reserved tickets will enter the venue at the regular door time.

Why does Ten Club have seats in the upper areas?

Many venues have contractual partner programs which guarantee their subscribers access to some of the prime locations across all events in the building, including Pearl Jam shows. This is a contractual arrangement and is outside of Ten Club’s control. In some venues Ten Club must hold seats in higher sections to make up for the loss of ticket inventory in the lower areas.

What types of ADA Seating are available?

ADA seating is available through Ticketmaster Request during the seat selection process. Locations will vary by venue and are typically very limited. There is no ADA seating in the GA PIT at any of the shows.

Can I transfer or sell tickets I can’t use?

All tickets are non-transferable* and non-refundable.

Pearl Jam has asked Ticketmaster to ensure their fans have access to tickets at face value and to achieve this they have directed that tickets be restricted from transfer.* On the night of the show, all guests will be required to enter with the ticket purchaser. For fans that can’t use the tickets they have purchased, Pearl Jam and Ticketmaster will offer a Fan-to-Fan Face Value Ticket Exchange for every city beginning at a later date.*

*Does not apply to shows in Chicago, IL and New York, NY where the Fan-to-Fan Face Value Ticket Exchange cannot be mandated.

Any details on Fan-to-Fan Face Value Ticket Exchange for Pearl Jam?

Fan-to-Fan Face Value Ticket Exchange will be offered for every city beginning at a later date.* You must have a valid bank account or debit card within the country of the event(s) in order to sell through the Fan-to-Fan Face Value Ticket Exchange. Tickets identified for sale above face value on secondary marketplaces are subject to cancellation. For more info on Ticketmaster’s Fan-to-Fan Face Value Ticket Exchange click here.

What should I do if I’m buying tickets for a show in Chicago, IL and New York, NY?

Chicago, IL and New York, NY have laws that prohibit artists from being able to restrict the transfer of their tickets. For shows in these states, Pearl Jam strongly encourages fans to choose to only buy or sell tickets to one another on face value exchanges — including Ticketmaster’s Fan-to-Fan Face Value Exchange.

Is there a deadline to list my tickets for sale on the Face Value Exchange for Pearl Jam?

Tickets may be listed up until one hour after the event start time*. However, the sooner you can list your tickets on the Exchange the better opportunity for them to be purchased by another fan. Once it’s been an hour since the event started, any tickets that have not sold will be placed back into your account and will be available for you to use.

*Boston’s Fenway Park – Face Value Exchange will officially close 10 days prior to each event. Tickets cannot be sold or purchased on the Face Value Exchange after that time.

What happens if my tickets don’t sell for Pearl Jam?

Your tickets will remain available for purchase until one hour after the start of the event*. Once that time has passed, any tickets that have not sold will be placed back into your account and will be available for you to use.

Why are tickets non-transferable in some cities and not in others?

Local laws around resale as well as technical ticketing capabilities vary in different venues, states, and countries, therefore transferability will vary throughout the tour.

Common Questions

How do i register.

  • To register, please visit: HERE
  • Sign in to your Ticketmaster Account or create an account if you don’t have one.
  • Tell us what shows you’re interested in and submit your registration.

Why do I need to register?

Pearl Jam is asking fans to register in advance to help block bots and scalpers, and get more tickets to real people who want to attend the show. While it doesn’t guarantee that all fans who register will get tickets, it can significantly reduce the number of professional resellers who buy tickets to sell for profit.

Can I register for the shows outside of North America?

Yes. For additional details on registering for international tour dates, visit Pearl Jam’s Official Website or click here .

How many tickets can I buy with my code?

You can purchase up to four (4) tickets per arena show and six (6) tickets per stadium show indicated in the text you received.

Can I register more than once to increase my invitation status?

No. Your Ticketmaster account can only be registered for the sale once. You may update your registration any time before Sunday, February 18 at 11:59 p.m. PT. We only keep the last registration you submitted.

If I edit my registration more than once, will I be disqualified?

No. You can edit your registration as needed — we only keep the last registration that you submitted.

I received a registration confirmation email. Does that mean I will get tickets?

No, the registration confirmation email is simply to inform you that we have received your information.

A second email will be sent on the evening of Thursday, February 22 letting you know if you will receive a unique access code to join the sale or if you’ve been placed on the waitlist.

When will I receive an email letting me know if I’ll receive a unique access code or be placed on the waitlist?

On the evening of Thursday, February 22, you’ll receive an email letting you know if you selected to join the sale or if you’ve been placed on the waitlist. If you are selected, you will also receive a unique access code via text.

When submitting my registration, I received a six-digit authentication code from Ticketmaster. Can I use this code to purchase tickets during the sale?

No, that code was sent to you to verify your phone number at registration. It’s not a unique access code and cannot be used to purchase tickets.

Does registering mean I get a sale access code?

No. Registration does not guarantee access to the sale.

If I receive access to the sale, am I guaranteed tickets?

No. Access means you have an opportunity to join the sale where tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

What is the ticket limit?

The ticket limit for the sale is four (4) tickets per arena show and six (6) tickets per stadium show.

What is PJ Premium?

PJ Premium seats are located in a variety of preferred locations and account for approximately 10% of ticket inventory per show. They are priced at market rate to offset increased touring costs while also keeping prices low for the rest of the ticket inventory. PJ Premium tickets will be available along with regularly priced tickets during the sale.

Can I transfer my code to someone else?

No, codes are unique to the account they’re issued to and won’t work if shared.

All tickets are non-transferable (except for in Illinois and New York) and non-refundable.

How can I get the seating map in advance?

Seating options vary depending on the event or venue and in some cases may not be available until tickets go on sale. Visit the event page on Ticketmaster to learn more about seating options and maps.

How will I know if I’ve been granted access to the Registration Sale after I’ve been placed on the waitlist?

If selected, you will receive a text with a unique access code and link to the sale. In the event of any text delivery issues, we’ll email your unique access code and link to the email address associated with your Ticketmaster account that you used to register. Access to the sale does not guarantee tickets. Tickets are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. If you’re sent a unique access code and link, you should join the sale as soon as possible.

I’m a real fan – not a bot or reseller. Why didn’t I get access?

Selection is random and not a measure of how big a fan anybody is. There are typically more fans registered than there are tickets available so a limited number of fans get access to the sale, and others must be placed on the waitlist. The number of fans who receive access depends on the number of tickets currently available — this is done to help create a less crowded ticket shopping experience for fans.

Some thoughts on Wrigley Field season ticket pricing, comparing the past to 2023

wrigley field tours tickets price

The Cubs sold 2,616,780 tickets in 2022, the fewest in a full capacity season (obviously excluding 2020 and 2021) since 1997. That ranked ninth in MLB, though only about 9,000 behind the eighth-place Red Sox.

The average per game of 32,306 also averaged ninth, again just slightly behind the Red Sox.

The attendance drop was a factor in the Cubs lowering season ticket prices an average of five percent, as I reported here last week . My bleacher season ticket dropped more than six percent, which was among the largest drops for any pricing tier for 2023.

That’s a step in the right direction, in my view. What follows is a detailed pricing analysis focused on bleacher pricing from BCB reader Lifetime Cubs Fan, who has done ticket pricing analysis here for several years. What follows is all from LCF — with charts!

Is the price reduction in Cubs season ticket invoices for the 2023 season a good thing? The answer is simple: It’s all in the perspective. One skill I have learned in my professional career is that it is almost always possible to have data support the narrative you want to tell. Many of us are familiar with the expression: “Don’t let the facts get in the way of a good story.”

I take the approach: “Let the facts help tell the story you want to tell,” and use charts in the process! So, in this article, focusing on the bleachers, I will share facts that depict both perspectives: The price reduction is a positive event, or: The price reduction isn’t enough. I will then conclude with my thoughts on the Cubs’ price reduction actions for the 2023 season.

First, let’s factually depict how the price reduction is a good thing.

When you compare the 2023 invoice to the 2017 Bleachers invoice (the one right after the World Series win), the price for next year is 14 percent cheaper. Look at the average STH Bleacher pricing from 2017 to 2023 year by year. This is the fourth year in a row they have decreased!

wrigley field tours tickets price

Now let’s take a look at the Bleacher prices normalized to 2022 dollars, the reduction in Bleacher prices is even more pronounced at 30.4 percent cheaper when compared to 2017 pricing (and has decreased each and every year!).

wrigley field tours tickets price

Going back 25 years, the decrease for the 2023 invoice is the second largest yearly decrease in Bleacher ticket prices during that period (2013 had an 18.3 percent reduction after the 101-loss season in 2012).

wrigley field tours tickets price

Lastly, let’s compare the change in Cubs’ Bleacher ticket prices 2023 vs. 2017 to the price of gas, a loaf of bread, price of a single day ticket to Disneyland and the CPI index over the same period.

wrigley field tours tickets price

If one considers attending a Cubs game a luxury, what other luxury item has dropped by that much in the last six years? I can’t think of any. One could surmise that the Cubs are taking necessary actions to retain most STHs and potentially grow the STH base for 2023. By my calculations, the STH base only needs to increase by about 500 coupled with 500 fewer no-shows per game in 2023, and the Cubs will have more revenue next year. Given the magic and beauty of Wrigley Field, and a team poised to improve in 2023, one could argue that this is a reasonable expectation.

Now let’s take the perspective at how the price reduction is not enough. It incorporates taking a longer timeline into account. Take a look at Bleacher ticket price percentage increase since 1997 relative to the CPI index over that same period.

wrigley field tours tickets price

During that time Bleacher tickets increased 309 percent while the CPI increased by only 85 percent. Though the prices will decrease for 2023, they have risen incredibly above the CPI over the last 25 years and one might think they should be priced much cheaper.

Now, let’s take a look at bleacher prices since 1998 in 2022 dollars (based on CPI)

wrigley field tours tickets price

Two things I find absolutely fascinating: On a normalized basis, the 2010 season was the most expensive season (after an 83-win campaign in 2009) and that Cubs average Bleacher prices for 2023 are EXACTLY the same as Bleacher prices in 2004, where half of the games sold out the first day they were made available to the public. (Who here remembers the wristband lottery and the line wrapped around Wrigley as well as the hours people waited in the Virtual Waiting Room?) I think it is a fair statement that the euphoria in 2004 was exponentially higher than the anticipation of the 2023 season, and therefore tickets are still priced too high.

Next, let’s take a look at Wrigley announced average per-game attendance since 1998 (2020 obviously omitted due to the pandemic and 2021 numbers only for the 51 games where 100 percent capacity was allowed). As you can see, 2021 and 2022 marked the two lowest years outside of the 1998 season. Until the Cubs can put a winning team on the field, lower prices are needed to help fill the stands.

wrigley field tours tickets price

Let’s take a deeper look and see what the lowest attended games (for the 2006–2022 seasons, where information is quickly available). The 23,425 who purchased tickets to watch the Cubs play the Phillies September 29 was the lowest announced attendance since September 4, 2013 against the Marlins, where only 20,696 tickets were purchased. This helps illustrate that people attending games are looking at the secondary market more so than Cubs.com when buying tickets (this chart is yet another indication that the Cubs’ price is too high, as well as the confirming the STH base is decreasing)

wrigley field tours tickets price

Another item to be mindful of is the substitution effect of watching the other MLB team in Chicago. Look at the chart below (data from this article in The Hustle last July ), indicating that in 2022, it was almost $100 cheaper for a family of four to attend a White Sox game vs. a game at Wrigley. The price noted is for four tickets, four hot dogs, two beers, two sodas, and parking. Almost the entire difference is due to the difference in average ticket costs between the two organizations.

wrigley field tours tickets price

The Cubs have likely noticed that attendance at Guaranteed Rate Field in proportion to attendance at Wrigley is approaching a level not seen since shortly after the White Sox won the World Series in 2005 (where one could guarantee World Series tickets by becoming a Sox STH in 2006). With discretionary dollars limited, and it being cheaper to attend a White Sox game (coupled with a better White Sox team on paper), the White Sox attendance increasing as a percentage of attendance at Wrigley will likely continue in 2023. However, I strongly feel the Cubs will continue to outdraw the White Sox overall next year.

wrigley field tours tickets price

Now, here’s my take on 2023 pricing. One thing the Cubs have a lot more today vs. 25 years ago is data, tons of data. Given that almost all tickets are going through the MLB Ballpark app along with integration with secondary market portals, they likely know key stats such as the percentage of games attended by the STH, the amount they spend, as well as how much they lost in selling tickets on the secondary market. (I also wouldn’t be surprised if your geolocation was tracked while in Wrigley to determine if you are a fan who “upgrades” to better seats later in the game or not.)

I would really appreciate it if some STHs reading this article could share their true cost per ticket for the 2022 season. For example, if you attended 54 games, and the cost of those tickets averaged $50, and for the 27 games you could not attend, (that also averaged $50 per ticket), you only received an average of $30 per ticket for those games, your true cost per ticket per game attended increases to $60 (to include the loss incurred for the 27 games not attended to the 54 you did attend.

The Cubs know STHs paid a premium and the price reduction in an inflationary environment was required. The Cubs also know that businesses and corporations comprise a huge portion of STHs, though this is less true for Bleacher tickets. Providing them a narrative that Cubs’ games will be cheaper in 2023 when many elements of running their business have increased 10-20 percent does have some merit. However, in my opinion, the price reduction wasn’t enough (even though it was slightly more than I anticipated). It should have been at least a 10 percent reduction, not 5 percent. Most of that gap could have been addressed by only having one “Diamond” game (Opening Day), and having all the weekday games in September be “Bronze” (if the Cubs are good and/or tickets are in demand, let dynamic pricing adjust accordingly).

I do want to acknowledge that the Cubs have recently provided more perks and experiences to STHs (Obvious Shirts and autograph signings, among others), so there is some increased sense of recognition and urgency on the organization’s part to make being a STH more special and unique. Overall, I feel the season ticket holder base will drop moderately in 2023, more due to fans/businesses eliminating discretionary expenses vs. how the Cubs have priced season tickets for next year. On the other hand, it will remain large enough that there should be an excess supply of tickets on the secondary market enabling fans, like myself, to attend games of our choosing at a discounted price compared to what a season ticket holder paid. Lastly, looking at the 2023 season, I feel one should focus on bundling up a bit to watch the Mariners, Dodgers, and Padres in April, great teams with marquee players, with seven of the 10 games against those teams at Bronze prices. Or who knows, it could be windy, warm, and sunny like the Cubs vs. Reds back on April 16, 2004 , a 76-degree day at the ballyard.

As always, interested to hear your thoughts.

A frank look at hot dog prices at MLB ballparks

Several teams offer hot dogs of varying sizes for different prices. But here are the cheapest ones, regardless of size.

wrigley field tours tickets price

Actor Humphrey Bogart once remarked that a hot dog at the game beats roast beef at the Ritz. Most baseball fans would agree with the sentiment, though Bogart might be surprised by how much the average ballpark frank would set him back these days.

According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, roughly 20 million hot dogs are consumed at MLB stadiums every season, which averages out to roughly 8,000 hot dogs per game. (The NHDSC also claims the average American eats a whopping 70 hot dogs per year, and if that seems like an insane number, well, you’re not alone .)

It’s difficult to fairly compare hot dog prices across MLB ballparks; several teams offer plain hot dogs of varying sizes for different prices, while other teams offer a single-size hot dog for one price, all in addition to specialty stadium-specific dogs topped with a variety of unconventional garnishes, such as mini pierogies , crab mac and cheese and Froot Loops .

Last year, USA Today gathered hot dog prices from 28 of MLB’s 30 teams . Building on that important research, and inspired by readers’ reactions to the price of concessions at Nationals Park after the team’s annual ballpark tour for media members ahead of Opening Day, I sought to compile a list of the cheapest hot dogs available at every ballpark, regardless of size. The following summary is based on hot dog prices obtained from hospitality vendors, teams and, in a few cases, the MLB Ballpark app.

Excluding promotional deals, such as dollar dog night, the Toronto Blue Jays boast MLB’s cheapest hot dog at $2.55 (or $3.49 Canadian). It’s available, along with similarly priced value items, at two concession stands at Rogers Centre. The Arizona Diamondbacks have the cheapest hot dog on this side of the border, a $2.99 offering at nine concession stands throughout Chase Field.

The Miami Marlins feature a $3 hot dog as part of their value menu at LoanDepot Park, and the Atlanta Braves and Minnesota Twins sell hot dogs for $3.99 at Truist Park and Target Field. The Kansas City Royals, Milwaukee Brewers and Seattle Mariners offer $4 hot dogs at select concession stands, and Oriole Park at Camden Yards has a 410 menu — a nod to Baltimore’s area code — featuring hot dogs and other items for $4.10.

In all cases, these hot dogs are smaller than more expensive hot dogs offered at other concession stands within the ballpark. For instance, the Blue Jays and Twins sell more standard size hot dogs for $4.95 ($6.79 Canadian) and $7.49, and the Braves offer a jumbo all-beef dog for $9.49. It’s good to have options.

The average lowest price for a hot dog across MLB’s 30 ballparks this season is $5.99. The Chicago White Sox ($5.49), Boston Red Sox ($6.25), New York Yankees ($6.29) and Detroit Tigers ($6.49) are among the teams whose cheapest hot dogs are priced closest to the average.

The most expensive hot dog in the majors is the $8.39 Colossal Dog at Oakland Coliseum, where the Las Vegas-bound A’s are averaging about 6,000 fans . (Insert joke about A’s owner John Fisher needing to offset the cost of the league’s lowest payroll here.)

According to Aramark, the hospitality vendor for the A’s and eight other MLB teams, the Colossal Dog is a quarter-pound offering from Lodi, Calif.-based Miller’s. Hot dog size information was not available for most teams, but the A’s might be the only club selling a quarter-pounder as its basic hot dog.

The average hot dogs found in a grocery store are two ounces, while the hot dogs featured on ballpark value menus are typically closer to 1.5 ounces. (As the food critic for the Seattle Times noted two years ago , the aforementioned $4 hot dog available at Mariners games “could stand to improve its meat-to-bun ratio,” and while it’s an excellent option for families with kids, the heftier $8 Mariner dog rates much better.)

MLB’s second-most-expensive basic hot dog is the $8 Angel Dog at Anaheim’s Angel Stadium, followed closely by the $7.99 hot dogs at Wrigley Field, Nationals Park, Dodger Stadium and Petco Park. Wrigley Field, Nationals Park and Dodger Stadium are serviced by Levy Restaurants, while Petco Park partners with Delaware North.

“In most cases, we work very closely with our clients to determine pricing,” said Shawn Mattox, a vice president of operations for Delaware North, which handles concessions for 10 MLB teams. “We use our revenue management team along with our [business intelligence] team to help run analytics on how things sold in comparison to other items and whether they’re up or down from previous years. We keep in mind sensitivity to pricing and look at cost increases and things of that nature.”

In 2022, an official from one hospitality vendor told ESPN that hot dog costs increased between 20 percent and 30 percent, which was the highest annual increase in 30 years. Here in D.C., the price of a hot dog at Nationals Park increased by 50 cents, or 6 percent, from last season, and similar price increases were instituted throughout the majors. The Nationals declined to make a ballpark operations official available for an interview about concession pricing, and Levy Restaurants did not respond to a request for comment.

The Nationals are one of several teams that offer discounts on tickets and concessions on select days throughout the season. Hot dogs are available for $4 — and pizza, pretzels and fountain sodas are also heavily discounted — during every Tuesday home game . The Cincinnati Reds and Detroit Tigers, who are serviced by Delaware North, offer similar hot dog discounts on Tuesdays, while the Colorado Rockies have a concession stand featuring smaller and cheaper items for kids, including a hot dog for $3.15.

“We know that fans of baseball reach across a lot of genres and families make up a good portion of that,” Mattox said. “I think we’re all sensitive to the fact that we want to make sure it’s affordable.”

The Houston Astros, Texas Rangers , Blue Jays and Royals are among the handful of teams with regular dollar dog nights throughout the season. The Phillies discontinued their dollar dog promotion this year after a food fight erupted at a game last season, but Citizens Bank Park, which is serviced by Aramark, still features one of the cheaper hot dogs ($4.99) in the majors. Meanwhile, the A’s are offering $2 tickets and $1 hot dogs — presumably not the quarter-pound variety — at three Wednesday home games this season. The New York Mets sold a Citi Field record 44,269 hot dogs during their dollar dog promotion Tuesday, which was 30,000 fewer hot dogs than the Blue Jays sold on a record-breaking “Loonie Dog” night last season.

For fans who might balk at the idea of paying $6 or more for a hot dog, most teams, including the Nationals, allow you to bring outside food into the ballpark, with certain restrictions. Short of making a stop at Costco en route to the game, one option for Nationals fans looking to get their hot dog fix without breaking the bank is to grab a couple of grilled hot dogs at the Bullpen on Half Street for the same price as a single hot dog inside the stadium.

Of course, expensive concessions at sporting events, where teams have a captive audience, are nothing new, nor are annual price increases. Back in 1978, one fan decided to do something about it. That year, the concessions provider for San Francisco’s Candlestick Park increased the price of hot dogs by a nickel, claiming it needed to cover the cost of new equipment and additional workers after state and local health officials began requiring hot dogs sold by vendors to be pre-wrapped.

Ron Gordon, a 32-year-old high school biology teacher from nearby Redwood City, scrutinized the economics of the price hike and took his findings to the media, garnering coverage from the Wall Street Journal, Sports Illustrated and CBS. He wrote to the Giants, the President’s Council on Wage and Price Stability and President Jimmy Carter himself, and he even created charts and wrapped hot dogs in front of the San Francisco Park and Recreation Board to show the Giants’ concession provider had woefully underestimated the number of dogs its workers could wrap in a minute.

After a year-long effort that cost an estimated $1,500 out of his own pocket, Gordon persuaded the board to roll back the price of hot dogs to 75 cents.

“I’m a Dodgers fan,” Gordon told reporters, “and I only come out to Candlestick a couple or three times a year. But I figure that the money I spent was an investment in justice. The only thing that bothers me is not that I know more about this than anyone else — but that I know more about it than I know about anything else.”
