Fall Kitchen

Our kitchen is the hub of our home. We find ourselves gathered in this space sometimes with our coffee cups and other times doing homework on the kitchen island. With Fall making its way into Alabama, it was time to decorate this space with farmhouse decor that will make staying home comfy and cozy.

Farmhouse Spring Home Tour

Welcome to my Farmhouse Decorated for Early Spring. As you can see, Rudy is always eager to greet guests. However, he expects a lot of attention upon your arrival.

Upon entering our home, you can almost see the entire house immediately!

When we downsized to our 1936 sq. ft. farmhouse, a large space for guest to gather was a priority. Therefore I designed the living room, kitchen and dining area into one big room.

Rudy welcomes you to our Farmhouse Spring Decorating Ideas Tour

Farmhouse Spring Decorating Ideas

As you enter the house you are immediately in the living room. On the right hand side of the door is my desk and “office” area. This is where I get to write by blog and keep up with the wild life outside my window.

In addition to the modern laptop and cell phone, the area with filled with a vintage desk decor including a typewriter and rotary phone.

The desk is an old dining table that was rescued several years ago and the chair is another thrift store find. After painting the chair white, the seat cushion was replaced to give it an updated farmhouse feel.

Office desk decorated for Spring

Next, on the opposite side of the front doors, you will see the entry table which I shared last month.

It’s decorated for Spring with these 7 Entry Table Decorating Ideas.

The antique entry table is filled with neutral elements of spring and lots of DIY projects, which includes this Thrift Store Lamp Makeover .

Entry Table Decorated for Spring

Spring Decorating Details

Next to the sofa, a side table is located in the center of the room. It holds a metal lamp that has been painted every color imaginable. I’ve tried to replace it but nothing works as well to keep the view open.

The repurposed silverware box is perfect for holding remote controls as well as a few accessories such as a vintage flower frog, an antique stereoscope card and a candle stick with one of Antique Candle Companies Spring Scents.

Diy silverware box

The neutral rug from Boutique Rugs has a touch of blue so I added a couple of muted blue pillows to the sofa. They are a very subtle shade of blue to not conflict with the neutral spring decor.

Living Room View on Farmhouse Spring Decorating tour

Coffee Table Decorating Ideas

Next up is the coffee table located in the center of the room. It’s central location and size creates a challenge to decorate with a centerpiece that looks great from all directions.

In order to add some height, I added a Vintage French Cheese Board loaded with a couple of DIY Grapevine Topiaries that I shared last year.

In addition, there is a glass cloche covering a birds nest and the chippy metal bird is in keeping with the neutral theme.

Spring Decorating Centerpiece for coffee table.

Adding a small wreath around the base of the urn allows the decor to circle the topiary.

You can see another ceramic bird and bird nest as you circle the centerpiece.

Farmhouse Kitchen

Next, let’s look at the Farmhouse Kitchen decorated for Spring.

View from living room into Kitchen for Spring Decorating Ideas Tour

One of my favorite features of the farmhouse is the DIY Kitchen Island . Last Summer it went from a neutral gray to this bright green which was a little shocking in the beginning.

However, the color seems completely natural now and the green is working great with all the greenery that I’m using for my Early Spring Farmhouse Decorating.

DIY Kitchen Island decorated for Spring

Although the ceilings in the farmhouse are new tongue and groove beaded boards, I wanted a reclaimed wood feel. You can see the tutorial showing how we achieved this white washed distressed look here .

The kitchen rug is my only indulgence to color and I can add almost any color imaginable to the kitchen without worry of it clashing.

Kitchen View on Spring Decorating Tour

In addition to the rescued furniture, the island includes open shelving which was created using industrial pipe.

View of living area from kitchen on farmhouse tour.

And the final side of the island hosts 4 bar stools that are a combination of metal and wood which works well with the industrial feel of the farmhouse.

Green Island and Lemon Decor for Spring Decorating ideas

Although the island top isn’t made from the reclaimed barn wood of my dreams, this technique helped to achieve the look I wanted.

Wooden Island Top for Spring Decorating Ideas

Decorating the 7 x 6 foot island is always fun and for the spring, I added my favorite bowl from the French Farmer’s Wife. It’s filled with more DIY Topiaries and faux greenery.

Finally the island was completed with these 2 matching vintage industrial lights, which were salvaged from an old gas station.

Vintage wooden bowl filled with DIY Topiaries for Farmhouse Spring Decorating Ideas

Dining Area

Next up is the dining area which is filled with lots of white ironstone and vintage copper pieces. My love for woods and whites is very evident.

My copper collection continues to grow and is overflowing the DIY Plate Rack.

I just added several more pieces while out thrifting with the gals last week. If you love thrifting adventures, you should follow us over on Instagram .

Copper and ironstone on DIY Plate Rack

The dining table is still decorated with the DIY Boxwood Topiaries and Lemons that I used for our Italian Themed Supper Club. You can see the Topiary Tutorial here and the table setting here.

Tomorrow, I’ll be revealing my Easter Tablescape for our March Supper Club Theme – Easter Brunch.

Christmas Modern Farmhouse Home Tour with Jessica of The Old Barn

Last year mom and I decided to do a week of Christmas home tours! Weā€™re so excited to kick off Christmas Home Tours for 2022. Every day this week youā€™ll see a new home up on the blog and you are going to LOVE every single one. Each tour will include video AND photos for you to take in all the inspiration to the fullest extent.

Today on this series is our friend Jessica of @The.Old.Barn . Weā€™ve toured Jessicaā€™s home on the blog in the past and it was a huge hit. Weā€™re excited for you to see the updates sheā€™s made and how she adds holiday cheer to her home!

SCROLL DOWN FOR VIDEO TOUR & SHOP LINKSšŸ‘‡šŸ»šŸ‘‡šŸ»šŸ‘‡šŸ»

When you take the winding drive to Jessicaā€™s home youā€™re first greeted by Frosty. The scene is truly magical! The traditional farmhouse exterior is perfect for Christmastime! A simple green wreath with a red bow in every window pop against the white exterior. And the front porch swing looks cozy and inviting with Christmas plaid pillows. Just a few potted trees and some lanterns and the entry is complete! We couldnā€™t wait to get inside!

youtube farmhouse tours 2022

ENTRY AND STAIR HALL

Jessica custom designs home plans . Her homes are well designed with interesting thought and detail. From the entry, you are immediately drawn to the view of the family room. A small entry table with a sweet manger scene and a mirror with garland bring on Christmas from the start. But your journey doesnā€™t end there. Youā€™re next invited through a doorway with a leaded transom window that Jessica found on a treasure hunt.

The next space is what Jessica calls the stair hall. A large table topped with simple touches of candlesticks and trees, along with a rustic bench and a cozy red and green quilt is all this space needs. Jessicaā€™s mom is a quilter so youā€™ll see cozy quilts here and there. The stair rail covered in garland with pops of red berries is classic Christmas!

youtube farmhouse tours 2022

LIVING ROOM

Jessicaā€™s living room is a show stopper with vaulted shiplap ceilings and a towering 12-foot tree! The plaid pillows, red ticking ribbon and pops of red berries are the thread that runs throughout. While the home is simply decorated it is filled with character and charm. And the attention to detail is not lost in any space. The newest member of the family, a playful Golden Doodle named Bonnie, has her own spot under the stairwell. But she can usually be found romping and playing and looking for sticks! The garland on the mantel came from Afloral . Itā€™s good to set a notification and order sometime in September like Jessica because this garland is quickly sold out!

youtube farmhouse tours 2022

SHOP THE LOOK

Jessica describes the range hood and the range area as the hearth of the kitchen. She used the classic garland with red berries again here, and a couple of topiaries on either side. The sink area is unique and set apart with weathered wood beams. This is more than your classic farmhouse sink because Jessicaā€™s is crafted from her amazing Quartzite countertop material! I wish Iā€™d have thought of it! I love this area as it looks out a window to the yard. Jessica dressed it with a wreath.

The counter area is clutter-free with a simple bowl of paperwhites and a candle on a cake stand. The milk glass she used is all at once sweet and sophisticated. The island is also minimally decorated with a hot cocoa bar. The Mr. and Mrs. Claus mugs are my favorite. The white hutch has touches of Christmas. This room makes me want to grab a mug of cocoa and stay awhile!

youtube farmhouse tours 2022

DINING ROOM

The dining room is true to Jessicaā€™s simple modern farmhouse design. She said she started to decorate a little more elaborate but it didnā€™t feel right so she paired back and it was exactly what she was looking for, a simple classic feel. There are nautical pendants over the dining room table and they are in keeping with the nod to coastal throughout the home. There is a beautiful view from every window. And since this home is just off the lake, it feels like youā€™re walking through a vacation retreat. Jessica painted the sideboard a light blue. A simple deer and some greenery is the statement piece!

youtube farmhouse tours 2022

The sun porch is decked with all things Christmas. The outdoor furniture is the same as mine . I love it covered in lots of plaid throws and cozy pillows. This is the perfect spot for Jessicaā€™s kiddos to come for family time. The fireplace mantle is decorated with garland and lanterns.

One tip I love is to decorate using wrapped presents. I think a radio flyer wagon filled with presents is perfect and reminds me of a Christmas movie. Speaking of Christmas movies, the front office tree has a squirrel in it to remind the family of Christmas Vacation, one of their favorites! How fun! Decorating with a nod to Christmas movies might be my new thing!

youtube farmhouse tours 2022

PRIMARY BEDROOM

The primary bedroom is so inviting. Just some green and white plaid pillows, a tree on the nightstands, a garland over the headboard and this room says Christmas. The faux fireplace mantel was a unique find and its a rare one because itā€™s very deep. Thereā€™s more garland and a few glass trees.

The wood doors leading to the bathroom hold some simple wreaths. This bathroom is stunning any time of year! Thereā€™s more quartzite for the countertops and beautiful rich charcoal floors with white veining. Everywhere you look this home has shiplap, farm molding, and picture paneling. It carries into the primary bath. Again, this space, along with the rest feels like a cozy retreat!

youtube farmhouse tours 2022

Thank you Jessica for inviting us into your home!

I hope Jessicaā€™s home tour brought you as much joy as it brought us. Every detail was so thoughtful and unique. Make sure to give Jessica a follow on Instagram at @The.Old.Barn . Also, be sure to sign up for our email to see the other 4 home tours releasing this week. You really are going to love them all.

If you are coming over from my friend Kristin, White Arrows Home , welcome! She has such a beautiful home in the Northwoods of Wisconsin.

For those of you that are new, I am Tammy. Together with my husband and little fur baby Piper (2-year old French Bulldog), we live in historical Southern Maryland.

You will often see Piper in my photos as she is never far from me.

I am so glad that you stop by to see my cozy fall home tour. I hope you find some decorating inspiration here.

Our modern new built farmhouse has an open concept. Therefore, there is no foyer area. You walk straight into the dining room area with my home office to the right.

With an open concept, the key is to have the design flow from room to room. That design includes colors that flow and coordinate together.

This year, I am using a lot of earthy tones in my fall decorations. You will see lots of textures, wood elements and even dried flowers from my garden.

Here are some beautiful decorating ideas for the fall.

Dining room.

The dining room is the first room you see when entering our home.

Instead of a runner or tablecloth, I used a wool throw on the table. Often I will use a throw as a tablecloth or table square depending on the size of it. I believe in working with what you have in the home first.

youtube farmhouse tours 2022

After creating my center piece, I bunched up the throw around it. I love the warm tones in this throw and the texture it adds to the wooden table.

youtube farmhouse tours 2022

You often see that I love to incorporate plants into my home decorations. It makes no difference if you use real or faux. I use both in my home.

Greenery helps to create that cozy feeling in the room. Try adding a pumpkin or fall pick into your plant for more visual interest.

youtube farmhouse tours 2022

I made a moss topiary for my sideboard. You can read about it here . It is so easy to make and a lot more reasonable then to purchase one new.

This creamy white pumpkin use to be orange. I decided to paint it to fit into my fall decorations. You can find my full tutorial at Beautiful Pumpkin Makeover With Dixie Belle Paints .

living room

The kitchen, kitchen dining area and family room all flow into a large space. It is perfect for us with a large family. We have grown children and a growing family with 4 grandchildren. There is lots of space for the grands to play.

youtube farmhouse tours 2022

I found this wonderful rug that come in various sizes. It is so plush and soft. The grand littles love to lay and watch television on it. This rug is amazing and cleans up so well.

All of the items found in my home can be found on my “SHOP MY HOME”.

youtube farmhouse tours 2022

The wreath over my fireplace is actually two wreathes. I found an over sized grapevine wreath in my basement. I hung the grapevine wreath and added the 24″ wreath centered over top of it. Now it fits the space!

youtube farmhouse tours 2022

Lots of textures on the fireplace to soften the stark white hearth and mantel.

youtube farmhouse tours 2022

I design with comfort in mind. Pillows and throws will be tossed on the floor. Grandchildren and dogs will lay on them too. The items for my home must be children and pet friendly.

The pumpkins are actually pillows. The grand littles can take them out of the basket. They love to lay on them.

This wreath is recycled from a few years ago. I store all of my wreathes in plastic wreath boxes. It keeps them protected and looking good for years to come.

kitchen dining area

The kitchen dining area, I kept very simple this year. A tall terra cotta vase was added with some hydrangeas dried from my garden. If you are interested in learning how to dry hydrangeas, I have a tutorial on how to dry hydrangeas .

Over the coffee bar, I added a few fall touches. I made this wood bead fall wreath .

On the opposite site of the table area, I have my favorite bench. I bought this bench from a friend. She made the bench from an old bed. It’s a favorite spot for my grandchildren to sit. I love to sit and read here too.

Aliya, I have neighbors that come over with their children. I hear them tell the children don’t touch anything of Ms. Tammy. I immediately jump in and tell the Mamas to relax this house is to be lived in. There is nothing that they can hurt that cannot be replaced. I want people to cozy up and feel welcome. I may move a vase or two before littles come over into my office out of harms way. I think now they all know, to come and enjoy.

Tammy your home looks beautiful for fall! How cute are those pumpkins for the little ones. They are adorable. Happy Fall! xoxo

I had to put up the large white pumpkin. Piper thought it was one of her toys. NOT! LOL

Julie, thank you so much sweet friend.

Nice to meet you Tammy! I would love to live in a historical town. Is it like a Hallmark movie? Your style is beautiful and perfectly decorated for fall. Love your bed bench. We made one out of a full size bed and I think it’s my favorite DIY to date. I need a cushion though. We double up the quilt but it’s definitely not soft enough. Enjoyed hopping with you this week. Happy Fall!

Not quite a Hallmark movie, but the sweet town of Leonardtown has wonderful events and great restaurants. Not like the bigger historical towns.

Tammy your home looks so lovely and cozy for fall! I love the plaid blanket on the dining table. And also a fan of your dining chandelier and pumpkin pillows – so much that I have the same.šŸ˜‚ So wonderful to be on the tour with you. Happy Fall!

Love it that we have same tastes in things. Thank you about my chandelier, I did not want anything fancy and felt it went well with the home.

Tammy, Everything looks beautiful and cosy for Fall. I LOVE love love the plaid on the table, the pumpkin pillows in the basket. I can just imagine how lovely this is for you, and your family and friends that get to see it in person! Have a wonderful weekend, you are in my thoughts.

Thank you, Elizabeth for stopping over to the blog. Wasn’t that plaid throw a great fine? I found it a local store and snagged it up.

Tammy, your fall home is lovely! The colors and textures are beautiful! I love how you used the wool throw on your table, the double wreath on your mantle, along with your pretty dried hydrangeas. It is all so cozy and welcoming! Happy Fall, my friend!

Thank you so much, Lynne for your sweet comment.

Rustic Modern Farmhouse Fall Home Tour: 2022

Sharing is caring!

If you love modern farmhouse style decor with a splash of cozy rustic – AND you love decorating for fall, keep reading! Below you’ll see how I styled my home for fall, on a budget, in modern farmhouse style in 2022!

Let Fall Decorating Commence for the 2022 Season

We are still in the warm temps in Tennessee, but these days, I’m just sitting in my house in the air conditioning, lighting candles, pretending it feels like fall outside.

To that end, fall decorating is in full effect. Ideally, I wanted to be all set by September 1. However, we started homeschooling my twin 7-year-old sons, so you can imagine how those plans went.

However, it’s September 15th, the house is fully decorated, and photographed as well.

Today I want to walk you through a tour of my home, hopefully to provide you with some inspiration, tips, and hacks for your own fall decorating.

What I’m Working With: My Version of Rustic + Modern Farmhouse Style

I feel like I should always say straight off that our home is a basement rancher built in the 1960s. Our house is a true gift from God, with plenty of room and a great piece of land. For that, I am truly grateful.

However, I feel like that there should be full disclosure from the start that we are definitely not a new build with an open floor plan.

That being said, we are updating as we go, and I’m totally good with being a little different than what you might see on your Instagram feed. Bless them, for sure, but ff you feel like some of those houses are impossible to live up to, you’re in good company here.

I hope I can inspire you a little in creating a cozy home you love with whatever budget or home you have to work with.

Posts like this are all about the pictures – I’m sure that’s what you came here for. No judgment! I get it!!

So, I won’t do a lot of talking.

I’ll add in details and links as needed, but feel free to comment if you have info I might have missed.

I used a lot of decor I already had – which I’m a huge fan of: repurposing what you have. I also used lots of generic items as well, that can be used for any season (candle holders, trays, glass bottles, etc.).

You absolutely do not need to buy all brand new each season! Sometimes a few pieces here and there (or none!) – or a few upcycled thrift store pieces (which I have plenty of!) will do the trick!

Fall Front Porch

It’s my dream to someday have a full front porch to decorate to my heart’s content, but for now, I have a little alcove. Which is actually more than I had in New York.

It’s still super-fun for me to decorate – and I hope you’ll decorate yours, too, no matter what size you have to work with.

I’ll share some pics and then talk through some details.

fall front porch rustic modern farmhouse with pumpkins, greenery signs

This is a l ovely wreath I purchased from Amazon this year . I searched high and low for one I liked better, but this one won my heart.

side view of porch with sign, window pane with weraths and pumpkins

The only thing in this picture that I purchased this season are the   fall flowers in the pitcher on the stool, from Michael s. I just needed a little more color.

The vertical ‘Hello Autumn’ is an easy DIY I made with chip board letters. I keep those wreaths on the windowpane every season and just change out the embellishments (those are clip-on pumpkins from Dollar Tree that I painted!).

The barrel basket was on clearance a few years ago at Hobby Lobby (for $2-3 dollars maybe?), that has just been sitting in my basement. I filled it with grocery plastic bags, and layered pumpkins on top.

pumpkins in basket with pumpkin greens in planter

Front Entry Corner and Wall

We don’t have a full entryway, but we have a small corner as you walk in. There’s also a wall you can see from the front door (side angle), which I count as my entryway.

Below is a small entryway table as you walk in.

autumn leaves sign with boho vase with greens

Then, there’s a long wall that has floating shelves at the far end on the right.

This year, I wanted to try to decorate with just fall colors, no overt pumpkins or fall signage. I polled my Instagram followers and they said they thought I needed at least one pumpkin.

To appease them all, I added two small white ones. These were all pieces of decor I already had, and many pieces I used for other seasons (terracotta in the summer, candles and handle holders, glass bottles, etc.).

floating shelves with neutral fall decor

Next to these shelves is a chair and mirror. I just added a wreath over the mirror and a fall-colored knit blanket from Target.

living room chair with fall blanket and mirror and wreath above

Next to the chair is a rustic bench that I decorated for fall as well. The centerpiece on a tray is a  gorgeous fall pampas grass arrangement from Amazon. Surrounding it are just a few fall vignettes. {For more f all vignette inspiration and tips, check out this post !}

fall table with sign above

Here’s another close up where I unfolded the kitchen towel in the tray (I have a whole post of creative ways to use kitchen towels in home decor right here !).

hello fall vignette with boho fall stems on table

And here’s the whole wall as a unit:

full living room wall with modern rustic farmhouse decor

The poster hanging is a sign from my Etsy shop , which, although not specifically fall, the colors coordinated perfectly. And I love having that Bible verse (Deuteronomy 6:4-8) front and center in my home.

Main Living Room Area

There are a few areas here in the living room, which move out from that long wall above, that I decorate for fall.

First, there’s a coffee table, where I place a tray for fall.

Across from that, there’s a shelf above the TV with an entertainment unit below – both get decorated also.

Moving to the right of the TV, there’s a open space that I decorate as well, and then a cube cabinet next to that, on the same wall.

Below, you can see them all, in order.

First, here’s the coffee table.

coffee table decor for fall

And while this picture is imperfect (Can you find all of the Legos – and the cat – hiding in the picture?!?!), it gives you an idea of how the wall and coffee table come together.

full lving room decorated for fall all together

Next is the shelf above the TV and the TV stand below, directly across from the couch.

full wall rustic farmhouse fall decor with TV stand and shelf

The pitcher in the picture above was a thrift store find – I upcycle an outdated ceramic pitcher with chalkpaint mixed with baking soda, to give it some texture.

fall printable sign minimalist

I love the minimalist feel of the whole shelf. That print is also another one from my Etsy shop .

Below the TV is a small entertainment center with some shelves that I added fall decor to also.

fall tv stand with pumpkin decor

All of those squishy plus pumpkins were from Target Dollar Spot that I purchased over the years, for $1 each!

Moving right, this the space in between two pieces of furniture. And I have to say, it’s one of my favorite spaces.

fall stems in vase on stand with tote of stems on hook

After I photographed this area, I purchased this rust-colored eucalyptus wreath from Hearth and Hand at Target and switched out the beads.

hearth and hand rust eucalyptus wreath on hook

And next to that is a cube cabinet.  I used to decorate all the cube except the center 3, but it became a bit much. Also, I needed a place to store my sons’ toys in the living room (which obviously, the Legos from the other picture never made it to!), so it was a win for all.

cube cabinet for fall

The rope basket is an easy Dollar Tree DIY , and I just added a few of my favorite fall items in there.

close up fall tray on table

Here you can see a side angle of the same wall in the living room

side view of fall tray on table rustic decor

Dining Area

Short version of a long story, we got a new-to-us dining table, which the color scheme forced me to adapt my fall decor. This is a busy space for us, so I wanted to keep it pretty simple.

My vision was to have a simple leaf centerpiece and a more minimalist feel since this area gets a lot of activity. This brown aspen leaf bush from Michael’s was perfect and exactly what I was looking for.

fall dining area tablescape

This candle is from TJ Maxx and smells absolutely amazing! I love that it’s made from coconut wax and essential oils.  The cakestand was a $7 clearance item at Hobby Lobby (that used to have a purple flowered top, which I upcycled!).

fall table runner cheesecloth

This cheesecloth runner from Amazon is absolutely dreamy, and I just love the soft effect!

fall place settings with dish towels

I like to use dish towels in lots of different ways in my decor. Above, you can see that I used a coordinating set as linen-type napkins.

Below, I used the kitchen towel an anchor for a simplified version of a tablescape. It’s much more convenient for everyday use, when placemats and a runner are just going to cause more trouble with the kids!

dish towel anchor fall centerpiece tablescape

Here’s the full living room looking from the dining table to the end of the far wall. Excuse the TV – Let’s Go Luna was on. Real life, y’all.

full living room dining room rustic fall decor home tour

I don’t really decorate my kitchen too much, but there’s one window in there that I added a few fall decorations.

fall window with wreath and bud vases

Fall Mantel and Fire Place Room

This is a cozy space right off the kitchen. Here’s our mantel set up, along with a cozy chair area and a tiered tray.

fall mantel with wheat wreath

The frame was a thrift store find that I upcycled with some paint. I added some scrapbook paper from Hobby Lobby as background for my wheat frame. This is one of my favorite mantel statement pieces so far.

pillows on hearth for fall in basket

The pillows in the baskets are no-sew pillows made from fall placemats and dish towels! I told you I had a lot of uses for kitchen towels! They make fabulous inexpensive decor!

wrapped taper candles for fall decor

I also love the rustic feel of having some taper candles join in a bundle with some raffia ribbon.

fall mantel decor chunky candle stick with vase of stems and pumpkins

On the side of the fireplace, there’s the cozy chair with an old-school Pottery Barn pub mirror above it that I haven’t’ been able to part with in over 15 years.

cozy chair with thankful pillow and burnt orange blanket

The hanging is another DIY from a kitchen towel! I bought a few empty grapevine wreath forms from the thrift store and just added my own dried eucalyptus (which was also from the thrift store)!

thankful pillow

That farmhouse pillow was a Walmart clearance item from a year or two ago. The blanket is the same one I shared from previously, from Target .

Fall Tiered Tray

I have a love/hate relationship with tiered tray… I love how the y look, but I hate styling them because they always end up looking cluttered to me. And I hate that, lol.

I tried to keep it minimalist, but I may be phasing out this piece of decor, or just using it mostly for coffee bar items. Tune in next year, lol.

fall tiered tray full

Lots of little DIYs on this tray – the tray itself is a DIY (maybe that’s why I can’t part with it, lol), but it’s great for a little nook – or even a centerpiece if needed.

Farmhouse Fall Home Tour, Complete

I hope you found something in my version of rustic modern farmhouse fall decor to inspire you here! That’s always my goal – to offer regular ladies and moms like us a few creative options when our lives are mostly focused on the important stuff.

But having a cozy home to spend time with your family is pretty important too, I think. Atmosphere matters!

youtube farmhouse tours 2022

Gerald and Dorie Shelburne were living in the Fern Creek subdivision dubbed Little Spring Farm when they started thinking about downsizing.

"The kids moved out, and we were looking at condos downtown so we could walk (everywhere)," Dorie told The Courier Journal. However, she said all the city spaces made her feel "a bit claustrophobic."

One day, as she was driving down a road near their former home, she saw a sign that said, "Horse Barn" and decided to check it out.

"When I came up the hill," she recalled, "the canopy of trees (and everything gave) me (a good) feeling. I (thought) it was just so beautiful."

Dorie says that once she and Gerald got a chance to view the property together, what they really fell in love with was the land ā€” all 20 acres.

"To be honest, we bought it for our dog," she added with a laugh.

A total redo

Aside from the original studs and flooring, the Shelburne home is all new. They enlisted the help of Twin Spires Remodeling to create an open space that would be ideal for entertaining and perfect for viewing the beauty of the outdoors from inside any time of the year.

The original part of the house, Dorie explained, had two bedrooms, one bathroom, the living room, dining room, and kitchen all crammed into a 1,000-square-foot space.

"And in the middle," she added, "(was) the washer and dryer, hot water heater, (and HVAC). We pulled it all out (and raised up the ceilings)."

Today, large windows all around let in lots of natural light, while glass doors in the living room open to the patio, allowing the two spaces to seamlessly flow into each other. Twin Spires also added on a completely brand-new main suite, complete with a conveniently placed laundry space and two walk-in closets.

Home of the Week This two-bed ranch home in Bon Air is a DIY-decor haven with a mid-century modern flair

"The design is (so) functional," Gerald exclaimed. "Our main bedroom ā€” with the closets (and) the laundry room ā€” (makes getting ready so) easy."

Additional outdoor spaces

Another totally new add-on is the side porch with brick flooring, which Dorie absolutely adores.

"That's one of my favorite features of the house," she said. "With the fan out there, it can be 100 degrees outside (but) if you sit in those chairs, youā€™ll still get a nice breeze."

She adds that both porches are, hands down, the spaces she enjoys most in their new home. "Iā€™m all about that outdoor space," she said.

In fact, now that the main parts of the renovation are completed, the Shelburnes have plans to enhance the outdoor area even further.

Home of the Week This east Louisville home boasts large, dog-friendly yard, traditional-style deĢcor

"Weā€™re going to raise (the) patio to go around the whole house," Dorie explained. "Then weā€™ll have tiled or stamped concrete on top of that. (And) one day weā€™re going to have a pool out there ā€” hopefully next year."

All for the family

The renovation took a year and nine months to complete, and through it all, Gerald and Dorie lived in the house ā€” spending most of their time in the space that's now the kitchen.

"Our (temporary) bedroom was where (the dining) table is now," Dorie said.

The round black dining table, now set in a corner, is adjacent to the Shelburnes sleek new kitchen, which features an almost-nine-foot-long marble island, a convenient pantry and appliance space disguised as cabinetry, and a setup that perfectly follows the kitchen work triangle rule.

Gerald and Dorie love being able to use the space for its intended purpose, but Dorie says the best thing about their house is how much their grandkids love it.

"Every day," she said, "my granddaughter wakes up in the morning and says, 'Can we go to lolly and pop's (house)?' She would just live here. They (all) love the land ā€¦ and just feel so comfortable here. So, although we bought it for the dog, we keep it for the kids."
