Home Theater & Audio Systems - World Wide Stereo

The McMasters McIntosh Factory Tour

Great music draws us in, and the phenomenal gear that presents it beckons just as convincingly. As one of the Product Specialists at World Wide Stereo, I was afforded the incredible opportunity to get an in-depth education on all things McIntosh from their top specialists, and experience firsthand just what makes them special. McIntosh Laboratories is a music Mecca and, in retrospect, my trip to their headquarters in Binghamton, NY certainly did feel like a necessary pilgrimage.

I’ve been to many manufacturing facilities in my life across many industries audio-related and beyond, but there was something completely unique and special about how McIntosh does things. I’ve never seen a facility staffed by such dedicated craftsmen and craftswomen, not only assembling, but truly building these units from the ground up. This is an American product from beginning to end, and the resulting quality shows the moment your eyes fall on the finished machines. I’d like to share this with you: a brief synopsis of my trip, and a peek inside a great American company.

Day 1: The history of McIntosh Labs.

After a good night’s sleep at a hotel near the McIntosh facilities, I awoke and joined the congregating group in the lobby. Dealers from every corner of the country had gathered: some who’ve sold this product for years, and some who were recently approved to be authorized dealers. One of the most remarkable things about this industry is the diversity of its constituents, and this group was no exception.

Ken Zelin (a McIntosh expert AND World Wide Stereo sales specialist) greeted us and distributed name tags. We made our casual acquaintances with each other and boarded the buses that would bring us to McIntosh Labs. We arrived moments later at the doorstep of an impressive three-story building with black glass covering the façade, adorned with the iconic globe of McIntosh Labs. We entered beneath and were met by a wonderful receptionist who welcomed us warmly. With a motherly gesture toward the left, she showed that cookies and coffee were available for us in a nearby break room. However, this was not the time for breaks.

Session one began almost immediately. We shuffled into the training room to find our seats. A brief history of the company introduced us to a rather unofficial mission statement: McIntosh does not build equipment and ask the world to accept it — they ask what their customers want, and then they build it with the best performance that can be managed. For a titan of this industry, the company and staff are quite casual and friendly. Being there was like returning to a rural childhood hometown after years of living in a crowded city.

Raw sheets of glass for faceplates

Touring the manufacturing facilities.

After the history lesson, it was time for a tour of the manufacturing facilities. This wasn't the first factory I’ve toured, but I was immediately grinning from ear to ear. I love machinery and seeing huge bins of parts — watching the assembly of world-class product is far from dull, in my opinion. However, I was a bit surprised by what I found. Here, there are no huge bins of parts waiting to be assembled: only the base materials themselves, which are constructed by hand to make each part. There is hardly any machinery at all – only in places where human hands are not adequate (such as glass cutting). Even then, the machines are manually operated and don’t rely on computers to drive them. The wonderful employees are not assembly line workers, but skilled craftsmen and craftswomen. I was extremely impressed by the skill, care, and dedication to perfection shown by every worker.

My favorite part of the tour was watching the process by which the famed glass faceplates are built. Cut from raw sheets of glass, they start with a water cutter. High pressured water fires in a jet, slicing through the glass like butter. However, it isn’t just water – mixed into the H2O is powder from crushed garnet, a stone crystal that has been used as an abrasive since the Stone Age. Adding this fine, sandy material ensures extremely precise, clean cuts that don’t create micro-shatters in the glass (which pure water would leave behind).

Then, using a brand new printing system (a dramatic improvement over the older silk-screening technique), special paints are applied to the backside of the glass, adding the signature McIntosh look. A unique feature of this new technique: the McIntosh logo, proudly scripted in large font on the glass, has the signature gold color. When illuminated by a backlight, however, it glows the brilliant, signature green color.

Next up: McIntosh amplifiers.

Once the tour had ended, it was back to the classroom for an in-depth lecture on the technical aspects and attributes of McIntosh stereo amplifiers , followed by another lecture on preamplifiers . The amount of detail and ingenuity that goes into the engineering and design of these products is astounding and so detail-intense — but not everything about amplifiers is glamorous.

Spools of wire

At a glance, some amplifiers seem to be entirely mundane, but deeper inspection reveals a well-thought purpose and brilliant design. Take, for instance, McIntosh's patented Autoformer technology, which is used in their best amplifiers so they can power almost any speaker in the world. Hand-wound transformers (made with different colored wire, as seen in the photo) are placed inside heavy metallic domes. Then, they are filled with tar for ultimate isolation and insulation. This is far more than copper strands and distilled coal residue, though. Autoformers play an important role in the amplifier's ability to supply plenty of robust power to any speaker, regardless of impedance. Whether you have efficient 8 ohm speakers or electrostats that can dip as low as 2 ohms, McIntosh amplifiers don't even blink.

Traditional amplifier design, on the other hand, forces the engineer to choose a specialty: amps that can handle low impedances usually perform best within a specific range of impedance. With Autoformers, a McIntosh amp can transform its own inner circuitry, allowing it to specialize in whatever speaker you have (or will have) for the rest of your life!

McIntosh amps have a reputation for lasting 30+ years without significant loss in performance, and are built with the same old-world quality as they were back in the 1940s. As a result, most McIntosh customers will go through multiple pairs of speakers before getting a new amplifier — and it's the Autoformer that gives them complete freedom in the speakers they choose. In fact, McIntosh life expectancy is so long, we often call them "the cheapest amp you can buy," because you'll run through the lifetimes of six $1,000 receivers long before a $6,000 McIntosh bites the dust.

Once we wrapped up the amplifier session of the day, a bus ride brought us back to the hotel for a lovely dinner and evening together, where we each excitedly discussed the things we had seen and learned.

Day 2: Studies on McIntosh integrated amps, music sources, & speakers.

We awoke the next morning and gathered as we had before. Again we rode the bus, and again we took our seats in the classroom. We began with a study of McIntosh's integrated amplifiers , which, to their credit, are generally built with all the same concepts, features, and capabilities as their separated brethren.

Turntables, CD players, streaming players - oh my!

After integrated amplifiers, we moved on to music sources: turntables , CD players , and streaming players. The same attention to detail and dedication to performance shone through in this category as well. While streaming audio is clearly the future of music listening, CD players remain in high demand (even these more expensive audiophile options). McIntosh does not build the players because they are the future, but because the majority of their customers have massive CD collections accumulated over the decades. McIntosh does not ask their customers to throw those away. Instead, they faithfully build units that allow their adoring customers to keep listening to their favorite albums, however they may be stored.

At last, time for speakers!

This was one of the more interesting categories to study, because the philosophy behind McIntosh speakers is very different from competitors’ offerings at similar price points. While most manufacturers chase an ideal perfection in sound, McIntosh simply wants a speaker that can handle exorbitant amounts of power. Why? Because their customers want it. Suddenly, the mantra we learned on day one was beginning to come into focus. When you build spectacular amplifiers with 400, 600, or even 1200 watts per channel, it’s hard to find a speaker that can handle that much juice without simply melting. Keep the volume knob low, and you are good to go — but where’s the fun in that? Even if your system rips and roars at 10% of the total available power, it just isn’t as fun as watching those glowing blue meters dance at the top of the scale. Enter the McIntosh speaker line. They’re not inefficient, they are just masterfully built to reach audiophile quality sound while making proper use of every bit of those 1200 watts.

Echoic and anechoic chambers

The crowning moment of training: A tour of the engineering facilities.

The mcintosh custom theater..

We ended the day in the McIntosh custom theater, and never have I been so happy to have the darkness of a theater room spoiled. The warm glow of blues and greens made the theater feel like something you’d experience on the Enterprise (assuming Star Fleet crews appreciate hi-fi as much as we do). After receiving our McIntosh McMasters certification plaques and thanking our gracious hosts, it was time to leave this technological utopia.

Wrapping up the trip.

We took our final bus ride back to the hotel for our last dinner together and shared each other’s company as we celebrated this wonderful experience. We parted ways in the halls of the hotel, eager for much needed sleep before we departed the next morning for our respective homes.

Andrew Parfitt

My love for cinema and music began early, and I mean that in two ways: I fell in love with these art forms at an early age, and my taste vastly predated my own era. Thanks to the influence of my parents, I grew up on the films of John Ford, Cecil B. DeMille, and Alfred Hitchcock, and listened to music greats such as Herb Alpert, Frank Sinatra, and The Beach Boys. I still hold that love, graduating with a degree in video production, interning with Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Entertainment, and now getting to design systems and spaces that bring these arts to life in incredible ways.

What's your favorite part of your job?

My favorite thing to do for my customers is create magic. I love going above and beyond to bring incredible music and audio into someone’s life. I recently had a customer who had been using entry level earbuds, but wanted more impact and detail. To provide that better experience, I hooked him up with Klipsch X12 earbuds, an Audioquest Dragonfly , and suggested switching to TIDAL HiFi streaming. After experiencing that setup, he quickly told me that I had turned him from a music lover into an audiophile. Often, I find many of my customers have become so content with the convenient, accessible .mp3 quality and inexpensive devices that they forget entirely what the music should sound like. Music should inspire you, give you chills and goosebumps, and transport you to your favorite venue or concert hall to hear all your favorites. Helping someone get that experience is what gets me out of bed in the morning.

I worked there in the late ’70’s. Great product and great place. Glad to see that not every company has shut down in Binghamton. Good luck in the future McIntosh!!

Their problem is finding people to work. The company took care of its employees in a very big way during the lockdowns and when business exploded in Q3 2020, they had an issue finding people to handle all of the extra work.

Who would not want to work for McIntosh? Especially in Binghamton. I’m a SUNY-Bing parent and even my daughter knows who they are.

I do enjoy my McIntosh MA 6100 preamp-amplifier and MR 73 FM/am tuner..

The best part of the visit was the vintage/used part of the factory. The techs working on it all looked like they won the lottery with that job.

One guy showed me how they restore older pieces and the waiting list — a lot of people plan on keeping their older McIntosh gear until they die.

Does McIntosh keep serial #s of amps made and who originally buys them..I have a MC2300 that Leon Russell told me he bought in 1971,and I wondered if yall have a record of that sale.I own the amp today.I got it after he died.I had recorded and toured with Leon since 1974.He was using the amp for his home system when he passed.

If the original owner sent in their warranty card or ever had it serviced — McIntosh would most likely have a record of it.

I get the sense that they kept records for many decades.

Thank you Ian, this was great to read! I’ve always had a certain connection to McIntosh, and always new about them even as a kid. I have family in that area, and I remember many years ago driving round trip from NYC to Vestal to purchase an MA6200 from Audio Classics. Well worth the trip.

Factory Tour: McIntosh Labs, Binghamton, New York

Ahead of Woodstock’s 52nd anniversary, a visit to the audio brand that made the massive sound possible

mcintosh audio factory tour

This 15–18 August marks the 52nd anniversary of legendary music festival  Woodstock . Though many stories from the weekend focus on the clichés, the 1969 event was iconic for another reason that many—even those who attended—may be unaware of. The massive, live, outdoor concert was so well rigged with McIntosh amplifiers that all the details of the music could be heard. Up until that iconic Hudson Valley festival, outdoor concert sound was mediocre at best.

The Grateful Dead —who were set to perform at Woodstock—were acutely aware of how they sounded in the studio and that their clear vocals and extended jams turned into sonic muddles when performed at large shows outside. The bigger their live events, the more they realized the vast difference between the sound. Through a series of convoluted occurrences, McIntosh came to be in charge of the sound at Woodstock and were the first company to understand distortion and sound-degradation outdoors—the further you were from the speakers, the more the quality eroded.

mcintosh audio factory tour

After Woodstock, the Grateful Dead continued working with McIntosh. For a spate of 1974 performances, the band had a Wall of Sound setup. While there are various versions reported regarding the specifics, the Wall of Sound has been said to consist of 600+ speakers and 48 McIntosh MC-2300 amplifiers resulting in 28,800 watts of RMS power. (An average home speaker averages about 130 watts maximum RMS power.) Each band member essentially had their own dedicated sound system supporting them. The sound wasn’t just loud, it was clear—even a quarter mile away.

mcintosh audio factory tour

Today, that same demand for amplification and quality remains, McIntosh CEO Charlie Randall explains to us on a recent visit to their Binghamton, New York facility. It’s there that the last fully American, fully integrated building of high-end audio equipment is in full swing—seven decades after the company was founded.

mcintosh audio factory tour

Though many performers (including the Rolling Stones and John Mayer) still turn to the brand for superior sound, concert sound isn’t McIntosh’s core business; home and high-end auto application is, like the new system coming to the Jeep Grand Wagoneer . Every McIntosh component goes through hundreds of steps, and human (not robotic) hands before it reaches the customer. Very few products you can buy today are as intricate, or have the tactile beauty of a McIntosh amplifier.

mcintosh audio factory tour

One such object is the two-channel MA 352 integrated amplifier for the home. It’s truly unique, with a glowing glass display, glowing meters and vacuum tubes, and a chassis braced in a mirrored titanium stainless steel finish. When viewing it on the assembly line its massive dimensions are show-stopping. The Model 352 is a hybrid: its tubes produce the warm sound you might associate with vinyl, while its solid state construction provides the kind of sheer power and reliability many home audio fans prefer. The half-inch glass front has to be cut with a water-jet—literally water sprayed at 50,000psi (pounds per square inch), a pressure so intense that it will carve precisely through just about any material. The entire unit tips the scales at 66 pounds, and costs $6,500. Despite that hefty price, McIntosh CEO Charlie Randall notes that the brand is currently in the midst of a buying surge.

mcintosh audio factory tour

How McIntosh creates each of their products consists of countless steps. While we do not intend to list them all, there are a handful of elements that really stand out for their painstaking, beautiful and (perhaps especially in an age of smartphones) wonderfully analog qualities.

mcintosh audio factory tour

McIntosh customers send their amplifiers back to Binghamton if something’s not working. “At one point Keith Richards asked us to just go through and check on his system because he was renovating his house,” Randall tells us. “Mostly that was just scrubbing nicotine off of everything.” Some of the equipment comes back 40+ years after it was first made, needing only minor adjustments.

mcintosh audio factory tour

During our visit, we see a stack of amplifiers—from the ’60s onward—awaiting repair in the bustling service department. Randall says there’s no such thing as an irreparable McIntosh product. True, the amps have grown more sophisticated and a huge portion of the business is in home-theater, but the ability to control every step of production means being able to fix any product they’ve ever made.

mcintosh audio factory tour

Also during our tour, we see a technician staring intently at a computer screen while holding an instrument in front of one of the meters of an amplifier. The meter should look blue, Randall explains, but McIntosh blue is distinct. The blue spectrum is very narrow and if you have a rack of McIntosh equipment, you’ll be able to discern a difference if the blues don’t exactly match. Technicians used to use gel sample colors to get close, though Randall notes those vintage hues are a bit foggy, and now technicians tune the blue spectrum using a computerized eye that identifies the LED light output so that McIntosh blue is identical for every amplifier that leaves the factory.

mcintosh audio factory tour

When a McIntosh amplifier is powered off, the typography appears to be gold. Turn the unit on and the logo glows green. An ornate UV-printing process makes that possible and, unlike other amplifiers whose labels disappear unless power is on, the McIntosh name never fades.

mcintosh audio factory tour

McIntosh also winds its own transformers. “We’re the only company that uses an output transformer on the back of solid state,” Randall says, going on to explain that benefit of that is more consistent power, regardless of what speakers demand. Without that transformer, power will degrade or the amplifier will shut down, because it will have to—or it will overheat and break. Incidentally, the machine that winds the transformers dates back to the 1950s, because they’re simply not made new. Then the transformer itself is coated in molten tar, because tar is flexible, but only to a point. This allows the transformer to carry the signal and not introduce vibration that might send aberrant sound through your speakers. Essentially ensuring you hear music, not distortion.

mcintosh audio factory tour

Each of these (and many, many more) elements is laborious. Like with everything McIntosh does, that’s the difference.

World of McIntosh

mcintosh audio factory tour

The townhouse is spectacular all on its own and is used beyond the McIntosh Group for private events; the artwork and audio gear are permanent fixtures.

Mcintosh entrance

The street entrance with a reception desk, reveals a view into the 8-foot-deep pool located one level up.

Pool view

The pool area has been used as an art gallery including a resident artist who painted for 10 days; his canvases adorn the pool walls.

Mcintosh Pool

The third level up is the massive space for living, by my calculations the volume is easily 40,000 cubic feet, and if you’re McIntosh, for filling with your gear.

Mcintosh Offices

A smaller “cozier” space for relaxing still offers a music space and a view of Petrosino Park across the street.

Mcintosh Entertainment Center

The next level includes bedrooms converted to offices and yet another decent sized listening room, currently housing audio gear from Audio Research and Sonus Faber speakers, more on that later. The top floor is yet another large living space with access to an outdoor landscaped deck, priceless in NYC.

Mcintosh Cozy

Evidence of the collaboration between McIntosh and Sonus Faber is everywhere including on display, the limited-built sf16 table top speaker, processor introduced around mid-2016. What you “see” is Sonus Faber, what you don’t see internally is McIntosh.

Mcintosh XRT2.1K.

The McIntosh Group has taken residence in this multi-level space since 2015. On the heels of their “best year ever”, which says a lot for a company begun in 1949, “Mac” introduced their new line of gear along with an eye-opening monstrous speaker, the 12th speaker McIntosh has produced, the XRT2.1K.

Mcintosh Director chair

The two-day event however also included the reinvention of the Aida speaker from Sonus Faber. For those not following, the McIntosh Group is now several companies that try and keep autonomy from each other while sharing design and technology. The group consists of obviously McIntosh, still based out of Binghamton, NY along with Wadia Digital, the Vicenza-based Italian Sonus Faber, Audio Research out of Minneapolis and Sumiko, known for their phono cartridges and Pro-ject, turntables and audio components.

Secrets Sponsor

Although lured by the prospect of seeing and hearing the remarkable project known as the McIntosh XRT2.1K Loudspeaker, we were treated to some new audio components. Included was a hefty new portable player, the MHA 50 with a 32-bit DAC, supporting 32 bit/192kHz hi-res files including all the DSD iterations. Bluetooth and aptX support as well. Giving the presentation was longtime Product Manager for McIntosh, Ron Cornelius.

mcintosh audio factory tour

If you need an excuse to buy your first Mac product, I suggest the very beautiful, retro-styled MA252 Integrated hybrid amplifier. The preamplifier section uses 2-12AX7a and 2-12AT7 vacuum tubes, LED lit from below that glow Mac green and turn yellow when turned on and glow red when over loaded. With just a few inputs, balanced and unbalanced along with an MM phono stage, for most, this may be their first foray into McIntosh for about $3,500.

MC1.25KW

There is no audiophile who wouldn’t want McIntosh monoblocks, the new MC1.25KW weighing 152 pounds, produces 1,200 watts with a listed distortion of 0.005%, the most powerful McIntosh has ever produced. Styled with the XRT2.1K speaker in mind, (also designed to handle 1,200 watts) the Quad balanced amplifier includes the proprietary Autoformer™ technology. The heat sinks are extruded monogrammed with the “Mc” logo, unmistakable McIntosh in heft, style and design.

XRT2.1K Speaker

But we were here for the literal unveiling of the 350 pound+ XRT2.1K speaker, better thought as a speaker system.

Mcintosh Setup

Italian designed and built, McIntosh is upgrading the XRT2K with a new line array speaker. McIntosh has coveted the principle that an array will produce an even dispersion, at any distance and any angle. At 7 feet tall, this speaker is a dominant element, in any space.

Mcintosh Setup Side

The extraordinary industrial design is credited to Livio Cucuzza, Livio talked about his influence from modern skyscrapers from the speaker silhouette to the front baffle attachment, like a glass curtainwall.

Mcintosh Image

Chief Industrial Designer while the Acoustic design is from Paolo Tezzon, Chief of R&D.

Mcintosh Chief

The speaker is striking; 7 layers of gloss black paint, aluminum trim and supports that mimic McIntosh gear, ported 6-8” woofers, 2-6.5” mid-range drivers, 45-3/4” aluminum-magnesium dome tweeters.

mcintosh audio factory tour

Rated for 2,000 watts power rating and 8 ohms nominal impedance.

Mcintosh Black Glass

The beautiful baseplate has the traditional McIntosh black glass with machined aluminum structure and the McIntosh logo lit.

Mcintosh Speakers System

Naturally the question is, how does it sound – big, powerful and broad! Playing only digital files, the demonstration exposed not only the heft and weight to the music but the nuances present. The speaker is not for everyone aside form the cost at about $130,000 for a pair, this speaker would dominate any space. I’m going to hold my breath for a smaller version, that’s my guess at this point, no confirmation or rumor intended.

The heritage of this company from Vicenza finds inspiration from a local legendary instrument maker, Antonio Stradivarius located not far in Cremona, Italy, both in philosophy and in style and design: The cabinetry, craftsmanship, functionality, design and technology all guiding principles to the soul of this company.

Mcintosh Speaker

Aida sketch from Livio Cucuzza

mcintosh audio factory tour

Paolo Tezzon, Chief of R&D decided it was time to update the Aida from 2011, however maintaining the current design and styling. The speaker stands 5.5 feet tall and weighs over 360 pounds. The “skin” includes the beautiful side panels in a “lute” shape, meaning double curved.

mcintosh audio factory tour

The slogan for the speaker is “limitless immersion” and Aida is of course named after a Verdi opera. Paolo refers to the design as 3 and 2/3 way, nor sure what exactly he meant frankly. The speaker being so large and tall, the design incorporates a “Tuned Mass Damper”, very much like a tall building that sways in the wind, thus removing vibration transmissions from the listening environment.

Mcintosh Tour

All new drivers however are the core changes with a Neodymium motor system. The tweeter is their “arrow point” 28 mm, while the mid-range is the Sonus Faber M18 XTR-04, 180 mm driver. The woofers are a pair of 220 mm, individually chambered and the infra woofer is a 320 mm. Sound Field Shaper Technology allows the user to customize their rear-mounted drivers and controls to their own taste or balance.

Mcintosh Speaker System Tour

The proof most certainly was in the pudding, for these speakers sounded stunning! My notes included words like: Emotional and excellent black levels. Clarity and smooth tones, Dynamic, amazing subtle nuances. What struck me most was how I felt these speakers would never fatigue me, I’m certain I could listen for hours. Aida can grip you and engage you with the music. I was overwhelmed by the sound.

Mcintosh Speaker

A bit must be said about the gear driving the demonstration from Audio Research anchored by their Reference CD player, the REF 6 preamplifier and Reference 250 SE monoblock power amplifiers.

Mcintosh Speaker Speakers

All in all, it was a great couple of mornings at WOM, I plan to go back as often as I can, or that they would allow. Our hosts included the affable President of McIntosh, Charley Randall centered in the picture. Thanks to all involved who made everyone feel welcomed, fed and entertained.

Mcintosh Speaker Tour Crew

WOM Event, McIntosh Introduced the replacement for their XRT2k speaker with the XRT2.1k. Extraordinary design and engineering.

At the WOM, World of McIntosh, heard the astounding new Sonus Faber Aida speaker. Giving some kudos to Audio Research for the gear.

FACTORY TOUR: AUDIO COMPANY, SONUS FABER

mcintosh audio factory tour

(Via Cool Hunting )

How is beautiful sound created? What are the differences, boundaries and blurred spaces between visual beauty and aural beauty? Since 1983, Italian company  Sonus faber  has been answering these questions through its spectacular, high-end audio products. Founder Franco Serblin was a dental technician with an unbridled passion for high-quality audio. In his spare time, he created stunning instruments, products he couldn’t find on the market. Through Sonus faber, he helped elevate audio—especially thanks to its distinctly smooth visual style. Over the years, the company has grown due to a fan base of audiophiles all over the world—and it’s now part of the  McIntosh Group , a holding company devoted to superior sound.

Sonus faber is headquartered in Vicenza, just a few kilometers from the beautiful old town, which is distinguished by Andrea Palladio’s Renaissance architecture. In a region whose history is drenched in beauty and luxury, we weren’t surprised to find a factory that seems to be a synthesis of craft workshop and design studio.

mcintosh audio factory tour

In large spaces flooded with natural light, employees assemble the brand’s precious objects while surrounded by greenery, both inside the production facility and outside. The process follows the logic of a small workshop: more experienced staff hand-make circuits and test the final products, while the others work on assembly.

mcintosh audio factory tour

Sonus faber’s credo is that beautiful sound must emit from an equally appealing vessel. For this reason, incredibly talented carpenters craft the wooden structures, using techniques borrowed from violin- and cabinet-making. This practice is perhaps most obvious in the Homage Tradition collection, wherein wood is varnished 30 times and polished by hand—a process that takes one month in total.

mcintosh audio factory tour

But wood is just part of the complex equation. Parts of the speakers are made from Carrara marble and brass, as seen in the  Electa Amator III  speakers. Another key characteristic is leather, crafted by expert artisans. They use ancient, rare tools (including whalebone sticks) that help the leather adhere to the wood even in the most delicate, difficult places—such as the curves and grooves of the Amati Tradition.

mcintosh audio factory tour

To Sonus faber, sound is equally paramount. During our visit, we tested various sound systems, including the new Lumina V. These speakers use classic elements such as paper cone subwoofers and other technical elements borrowed from the brand’s higher-range products. During the listening session, we noticed that two speakers created the illusion of multiple sound sources. It was particularly evident when listening to Eva Cassidy’s rendition of “What a Wonderful World”—we felt immersed in the sound. The range of bass exploded with Leonard Cohen’s deep voice on “You Want It Darker.” On Dubxanne’s “Roxanne,” we could further appreciate a complex and structured song that pushes the system to its limits, while keeping the bass and treble balanced. We could feel the vibrations, but the pitch remained perfect.

mcintosh audio factory tour

Inside the new Design Lab Room—equipped with a mega-screen and an impressive range of 15 speakers and four subs—we heard more music as well as sound from films. The system really proves itself with 3D sound experiences like Dolby Atmos, which we tested with movie scenes from  The Greatest Showman  and  The Man from U.N.C.L.E. , as well as with a spectacular live performance by Eric Clapton at The Royal Albert Hall. In each case, the space felt saturated in sound, while being presence of stunning speakers that don’t need to be hidden.

mcintosh audio factory tour

The Design Lab—led by Livio Cucuzza and consisting of approximately 15 designers and engineers—works to experiment, study and create new forms and functions. One of their most recent projects meant collaborating with Maserati, for whom they designed a sound system that can be installed as a luxury option in the MC20 supercar.

mcintosh audio factory tour

To enjoy the in-car listening experience, we traveled to Modena, where this vehicle is produced. The sound of the Sonus faber Premium Audio System has 12 speakers, reaching 695 watts. Only two of the speakers are visible, and they display a sophisticated interweaving of lines that mimic the movement of the string grills that define many iconic Sonus faber products.

mcintosh audio factory tour

The in-car sound can be adjusted in two modes (one dedicated to everyday and one for more extreme driving) and has been designed not to compete with the engine’s sound, but to remain crystal clear. The two companies plan to continue their collaboration, and a Sonus faber system will also be available for Maserati’s upcoming Grecale and Gran Turismo—the brand’s first 100% electric vehicle.

A visit to Audio Classics and then the McIntosh factory makes for a fantastic day! Finish it off with some Speidies and beverages at a local establishment and you are good to go.

Oh my God.... spiedies are amazing... I definitely miss them. When I grew up there, years ago, every bar (and there are ALOT of them in Binghamton) grilled spiedies during the summer. I have to have at least one piece of Mc in my system. I have had more than a few over the years. Currently my only piece is a phono preamp. At some point might get another amp... but their higher models are far too heavy for me, but then again I am currently very happy with my MBL! So no hurry at this point.

Anyone interested in getting an AK group together to tour the plant? I've been meaning to go for some time, called a few months ago but they were busy with a new product release that week. I'm flexible, especially with the close location, but it would be more enjoyable with a bunch of fellow McAddicts! :thmbsp:
