Excellent tour. The cave was well worth seeing, as was the underground lake. Would've liked more time in Argostoli .. 25 minutes was nowhere near long enough but this was due to a particular group of customers over running by 10 mins at each stop .. sue was an excellent and very informative guide ..

it was a nice tour, but honestly way too long ... it took us 4 hours to go, and 4 to come back ... bus, bus, boat, bus, and viceversa ... it was really exhausting! we left our hotel at 7 in the morning, and where back at 22h ... it was a nice tour, but noth worth all those rides : - but really well organised though .

This was a fantastic day trip and I only have good things to say about it. First of all the tour guide Sue was brilliant. She was such a lovely person and she was so knowledgeable about Kefalonia, the Ionian islands, Greek mythology, Greek history, economy and politics! She went out of her way to help anyone who needed assistance on the trip and spoke amazing Greek! She was a really interesting person, one you're just so glad you met and that you'll remember for a long time. It was a long day but it was broken up by two trips which you paid an extra 10euro for. The first was to the Drogarati caves and the second a boat trip on the Melissani underground lake. These were two things I never would have seen if we didn't go on this trip. The Melissani lake was beautiful and the caves were stunning. The coach trip around Kefalonia was equally pleasant and interesting with Sue giving us facts, stories and history along the route. We stopped for photos in some gorgeous spots, visited an orthodox monastery and got to have a really nice lunch in a local taverna partway through the day. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone going to this area of Greece. We were both very hungover during the trip but managed to keep it together on the bouncy ferry and coach!

This tour is a great value especially considering the transportation you'd need on your own for both islands, and Kefalonia is beautiful. We got to see a number of places, including the caves and underground lake, while also having a relaxing lunch. All of the door to door transportation was comfortable, and Sue was a great guide. I wish we had an opportunity to swim at one of the beautiful beaches, but I think that is likely an issue with all day trip tours since there is only so much time. The only negative is that if you are staying on the southeast of the island, you are may be picked up first over two hours before ferry departure from Agios Nikolaos in the north and then in the evening, be dropped off last. Makes for a long day, but at least the drive across Zakynthos is scenic!

This tour was awesome. Sue, our guide is so professional and brilliant. She provided us with all the necessary informations regarding the isalnd of Kefalonia with it's landmarks.

Amazing experience! Everything was very well organized (pick up and drop off from / to hotel, coach and ferry transportation). Our guide, Sue, was super friendly, fun and knowledgeable. Our bus driver was great too! I highly recommend taking the option to see the underground lake, it's fantastic.

When we arrived, it took us ages to find anyone and ended up being a guy chatting to his friend not in the main area. We then had to wait over an hour for other flights before we finally left. We leave today for our flight at 13.00pm and still have not received any confirmation of pick up time, none of the numbers work so we’ve had to book a taxi. Just pay the extra and get a taxi, it is not worth it for ruining our last day! Read more Written May 10, 2024

The driver was waiting with a board. Smooth ride and very helpful with our enquiries about the Island. Popped by to amend our return transfer and found Angela to be very amenable and charming. The cost was excellent as after speaking to others who ordered through their hotels or directly from outside the airport, realised we’d paid at least 30 per cent less! Will defo use next time. • Navigate46861045164 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles The actual trip was so good, but the waiting was more annoying. Before the trip the communication was good. But the car ride was a little weird because the driver was late. Then we can't find the boat and nobody helped us. We waited an hour for the ride and there was no shadow. After an hour a man said we got a private boat and they are so sorry about the waiting. The boat driver was so kind and helpful. The trip was very nice, we saw a turtle as well. • chloeescott21 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great for kids! We visited this water park, we got a transfer from Tui as that's where we booked our holiday from. The transfer picked us up at 9:40 and took us straight there, we got there and paid for lockers but got €1 back. There is a couple of food places but a bit pricey as you can't take your own food or drinks in but we did sneak in a couple bottles of water. There is lots to do for kids also which is great, it's not a massive water park but we did enjoy ourselves. Lots of sun loungers and umbrellas everywhere and it wasn't too busy considering we went during a heatwave and summer time! Transfer picked us up at 4pm so we had plenty of time to have fun on the slides! Read more Written July 21, 2023
  • Karanszia 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Bad service for 2nd day running. 2nd day running we've had s**t service from this company. Yesterday's was a dangerous drive, although the boat trip itself was good. Today we waited outside our hotel as stated on our ticket. No one turned up. On phoning the office, it appears the driver picked 3 people up from the office, thought it was us so didn't stop at our hotel. To be fair to the office, when we rang the office they did say they could arrange for us to do the same trip an hour later, but that would have meant getting back just shy of midnight. The office was supper quick at coming out and giving us a cash refund. No grips with the office, just with the driver. Read more Written July 11, 2023
  • cherieo259 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Dangerous driver While the turtle experience and boat trip to turtle island itself was very enjoyable, as was looking at the blue caves afterwards, unfortunately I can't say the same about the journey to and from the hotel. On the way out the driver was in the phone the whole journey. On the way back he kept picking his phone up and was scrolling through it, and also picked up a load of paperwork which he read while driving ( see attached photo), even doing it on approach to junctions. At one point he nearly ran in to the back of a truck. When we got to Laganas to pick up the boat he dumped us out, said the boat wasn't in yet and to pick it up down there pointing to a jetty where there was lots of boats. We asked if there was a toilet on the boat or if not where to find one. He said there was one on the boat. He told us the boat to look for was a white boat. He SHOULD have walked us DOWN TO WHERE THE BOAT COMES IN, so we knew exactly where to pick it up from. It wasn't a white boat but beige and didn't have a toilet. We only found it coz we walked along and asked each boat operator if we were with them. Definitely not happy with the service from this company. The boat trip itself I can't fault. • Y6782ILpaulk 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Seriously the Zante turtle spotting cruise is not worth the money :( SEPT 22 Awful ! Picked up from our Jet2 hotel by coach, (1 of 3) which was 20 minutes late, having stopped at multiple hotels prior to us, and many after. Bundled onto a large boat run by 'Ionic' which was rammed full of people, ( so potential for 156) with a lack of seating, and no safety briefing. The guys admitted on our return, (one turtle spotted at sea) its off season, so the likelihood of spotting turtles was slim. Food and drink is not included in the price, although available at an additional charge. The swimming element off the boat was unsupervised ... Do yourself a favour, and spend the money on a taxi instead to the harbour, where there is a turtle in residence ! Seriously not worth the money and now really disappointed with the Jet2 Rep who turned up at our Aluasoul hotel & sold us the cruise :( Read more Written September 22, 2022
  • Lynette F 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Best in the evening Zante town - taxi from Tsilivi was 15euros and is a 10 min drive. You can get a bus for 1.60 euros but we were advised the buses can be a little unreliable so we didn’t take the bus. There is also a road train that you can take for 7euros adults/ 4euros children. This departs 3 times per day. A little costly compared to other options. We arrived at 3pm when except for restaurants and some tourist shops, everything was mostly closed. Zante town seems to come to life after 6pm- by 9pm the town is BUZZING. The contrast between day and night is surprising. We went again, when St Dennis (24th Aug)was being celebrated. There was a massive market and religious parade. We thought it would be tricky getting back but after 15 mins outside the centre it was possible to flag a cab. Read more Written August 27, 2022

Dennis made that day unforgettable.. Being himself from the region, he not only showed us the main points of interest but he also showed us the most hidden caves where we could swim in all privacy in spite of the wild sea outside! Zakynthos or Kefalonia: Which Greek Island is Better?

zakynthos or kefalonia

If your island getaway has come down to Zakynthos or Kefalonia, we’d say you’re in a pretty good place. Yep, these are two of the serious stunners of the Ionian region, an area of the Mediterranean that sort of straddles the end of the Italian Adriatic and the rugged sides of western Greece. It’s filled with precisely the sort of thing most folk are after from a vacation in these parts: White-sand beaches, empty pebble coves, pine forests, and lazy villages brimming with tavernas. Nice.

But should you pick Zakynthos or Kefalonia? That’s the question. There are a few key differences to consider when it comes to these idyllic lands. Although they’re only 12 miles apart and form the very beating heart of their own island chain, each gives a varied take on Greek island life. One might be better for hardcore partiers looking to let loose and guzzle ouzo. The other could be a top option for adventurers wanting to pull on the hiking boots and hit the eucalyptus-scented hills.

Cue this guide. It will weigh up a few of the most important factors that anyone looking to book a Greek island escape should have on their mind. From the best beaches to the main activities to the overall vibe, it gives the lowdown on Zakynthos versus Kefalonia for 2023. Let’s begin…

Table of Contents

Zakynthos or Kefalonia: The vibe

Kefalonia town

Both Zakynthos and Kefalonia are in the Ionian island chain. That means they both offer that unique western Greek culture; something intriguingly influenced by the Balkans and Italy, which are right on the doorstep. If we had to pinpoint the main thing that sets them apart, we’d say that Zakynthos is certainly the more quintessential holiday isle. It’s got a whole southern and eastern coastline that’s whole MO is summertime package tourism. Go to those to encounter towns like Laganas (pumping bar street included) and Tsilivi (family hotels galore).

Kefalonia does have resort areas, but they’re nowhere near as hedonistic as over on Zante (the Italian name for Zakynthos). From affluent and sleepy Fiskardo in the north to the pebble beaches of Poros on the eastern shoreline, there are loads of places you can go to completely escape the crowds. And that’s not even mentioning the remote highland villages , where you might not encounter another tourist throughout your whole trip. Some places do get higher numbers of visitors – Skala, Lassi, Argostoli – but they’re still relaxed affairs, with traditional tavernas rather than beating DJ discos and shot bars.

Winner: Draw. This one’s really down to what you want.

Zakynthos or Kefalonia: The looks

Asos, Kefalonia

Let’s start with Kefalonia. Just a mention of the name is usually enough to stir the heart strings. This is usually considered to be the star of the Ionian island chain. That might be down to the fact that it’s the largest of the whole archipelago. However, we prefer to think it’s because Kefalonia is, simply, stunning. Scarred by the 1,600-meter-high top of Mount Énos , it’s got a rugged backcountry covered in rare fir forests, dotted by time-stood-still villages, and filled with remote valleys awash with fluttering butterflies. Then you add in the coast. Wowza. The shores are true Ionia – think soaring cliffs of chalk-white stone lurching straight from still, turquoise seas.

As it’s only 12 miles to the south of Kefalonia, Zakynthos is unsurprisingly pretty similar in terms of looks. However, it manages to hit a relatively modest point of just 758 meters above sea level at the summit of Vrachionas. That mountain ridge dominates the western side of the island, which is unquestionably the hardest area to reach but also the most beautiful. It’s the home of uber-famous Navagio Beach (more on that later) and unfolds in a majestic show of sheer cliff faces that gleam pure white over the end of the Adriatic Sea. Zakynthos’s eastern and southern sides are way more developed than anywhere on Kefalonia, but the villages – which managed to survive WWII – still have age-old touches of architecture.

Winner: Kefalonia – it’s all about the nature!

Zakynthos or Kefalonia: Beaches

Zakynthos beach

You’re not going to have a hard time finding spectacular beaches on either of these islands. Both have those dramatic, cliff-backed sands that Ionia is so famous for.

Zakynthos probably has the most famous of the lot, though. Cue Navagio Beach. It’s also known as Shipwreck Beach and could just be the most-photographed spot in the Greek islands aside from the Santorini caldera . It’s a stunning place, no doubt, with craggy rocks topped by lush forests descending into a hidden cove where a rusting old ship still sits on the sand. You’ll need to get a taxi boat in from Porto Vromi, but the best photo ops are probably on the lookout points above. Other beaches on Zante are more relaxed, resort-style places, like Gerakas and little Agios Nikolaos.

Kefalonia has beaches with super clear water and pristine sand. They’re rarely as developed as the ones on its compadre island to the south. The chart toppers are Myrtos Beach, a cotton-white wisp of rough powder that lies beneath the rugged tops of Agia Dynati on the north-west coast, and Foki Fiskardo Beach, a secret yachter’s cove that’s entirely surrounded by fragrant pine woods. Basically, the key thing here is that the west shore is wild and breath-taking, but the east is more accessible and better for chilled sunbathing.

Winner: Zakynthos. It just has to be because of Shipwreck Beach.

Zakynthos or Kefalonia: Nightlife

Kefalonia view

When it comes to nightlife, Zakynthos and Kefalonia really do like to do things differently. Kefalonia prefers laid-back, easy-going evenings. For the most part, your nights on this pine-clad, wave-lapped isle will be about devouring big mezze dinners by the shore and watching the boats bob in the marina. That, or chilling up in your own private villa as the sun sets. Basically, even the liveliest towns on Kefalonia (Sami, Skala) only have a handful of music bars. They can be rowdy but are often packed with just as many Greek revelers as international partiers.

It’s a whole different story down in Zakynthos. Here, the town of Laganas is nothing short of legendary on the Greek island party circuit. It’s up there with Malia (in Crete ) and Ios and Mykonos, pulling in 18-30s drinkers from May to September with the promise of cheap booze deals and raucous pub crawls. The action is all cantered on the Laganas Strip but the vibe has also spilled over into neighboring towns like Kalamaki.

Winner: Zakynthos.

Zakynthos or Kefalonia: Getting there and around

Ionia boats

Zakynthos International Airport (ZTH) is perfectly located on the south side of the isle, just a stone’s throw from the main resort at Laganas (less than 10 minutes’ drive in a taxi). In total, it handles nearly two million passengers annually and receives flights on budget, premium, and charter carriers from all over Europe. Zakynthos also has a major ferry terminal at Zakynthos Town. Boats come in there from Patras, Kyllini, and even Brindisi over in Italy. Once in Kefalonia, there are fairly decent roads linking the popular towns, but there are no motorways. Still, you can drive from one side of the island to the other in under 50 minutes, so that shouldn’t be too much of an issue.

Kefalonia also has its own airport. The Kefalonia International Airport (EFL) is a touch smaller than the one over on Zante. It handles just under 800,000 passengers each year, and has a reduced array of services. However, you can still arrive directly here from key European changeover hubs like London Stansted, Frankfurt, Bergamo, and Amsterdam. Argostoli, Sami, and Poros are the three main ports. They get boats from Italy and mainland Greece. It’s also possible to get national bus network tickets in from Athens, but it’s a pretty long ride! Driving around Kefalonia can be tricky. The mountain roads are windy and remote. That said, route 50 offers a loop around the whole island on very well maintained single-lane roads.

Winner: Zakynthos, but only because it’s served by more package flights in the summer.

Zakynthos or Kefalonia: Things to do

hiking in Kefalonia

You won’t be short on things to add to the itinerary on either of these islands. They’re two of the largest in the Ionian region, so come packed with enthralling things to do and see.

Take Zakynthos. The obvious first port of call is that jaw-droppingly stunning Shipwreck Beach. There are oodles of package boat tours that can take you there, but also exciting hikes to the lookout points above the bay (that’s one of Greece’s top photo opportunities for sure). Flip to the east coast and you could dip in the waters of Xigia Sulfur Beach. It’s a stunning bay but also a sort of natural spa bath, with mineral-rich seas that get super deep just meters from the shore. Add to that party nights in Laganas and swimming with sea turtles in the Zakynthos Marine Park and there’s plenty to be getting on with.

We’d say Kefalonia has less of an overtly touristy line up of things to do; more of an authentically Greek feel. Start in the enchanting village of Fiskardo, where cheese-sizzling tavernas overlook a glorious bay of see-through water. That’s the perfect place to plan adventures deeper into the island. They could include jaunts to the awesome Melissani Cave (an otherworldly lake in a grotto) or hikes on the lovely Cypress Trail through lush coast evergreens. You’ve also got the Ainos National Park to factor in – it’s a mountain biker’s, bird watcher’s, rambler’s dream come true.

Winner: Kefalonia

So, where should I go, Zakynthos or Kefalonia?

We hope this guide has outlined a few of the key similarities and differences between these two ever-popular Greek islands. We also hope that it’s helped you to decide between Zakynthos and Kefalonia for this year’s adventure.

To sum up, we’d put it like this: Zakynthos is more tourist orientated. It’s got a whole load of package resorts and seasoned tour outfitters that can whisk you off to see iconic Shipwreck Beach or to swim with leatherback turtles in the Ionian Sea. The nightlife on Zante is also far more hedonistic than over on Kefalonia, thanks mainly to the pumping 18-30s resort of Laganas on the south coast.

Kefalonia, meanwhile, beckons with untouched backcountry and idyllic coastlines. It’s one of the most nature-rich and adventure-ready islands in Greece, with soaring mountains of over 1,600 meters for hikers and bikers, along with enclosed bays for wild swimmers and snorkelers. The towns are charming but not traditional because a lot of them were destroyed in the war, but the vibe is more relaxed and easy going throughout.

How Many Days in Kefalonia?

As the largest island located in the Ionian Sea, Kefalonia is one of the largest Greek islands known to visitors. Because of this, when it comes to deciding how many days to spend in Kefalonia, you’ll want to plan to spend at least 3 days in Kefalonia.

With 3 days, you’ll have enough time to visit at least a few of the island’s famed beaches, enjoy the island’s culture by visiting at least one of Kefalonia’s towns or villages and ultimately get a good taste of what life is like in Kefalonia.

Beyond 3 days, with 4 days in Kefalonia, you’ll have the opportunity to see the island more holistically, visiting different areas of the island with different things to offer.

5 days in Kefalonia will do the island justice, offering you the opportunity to discover the full depth of Kefalonia along with the chance to also visit the nearby islands of either Ithaca or Zakynthos.

Getting To & Around Kefalonia

Kefalonia is one of the most conveniently located Greek islands, with easy ferry transportation from the Greek mainland as well as an international airport serving both Greece and elsewhere in Europe.

If you plan to fly into Kefalonia, the Kefalonia airport is located just 8 km from the island’s capital city, Argostoli.

Due to the convenience of the island having its own airport, Kefalonia is an excellent Greek island destination for those searching for an island off the beaten path, yet still accessible by air. You can organise airport transfers here.

In the summer, you’ll find flights to Kefalonia from Athens, as well as various European countries such as the UK, France, Netherlands, Italy, and more.

For those already in Greece and who would like to visit Kefalonia by ferry, the island has two ports; Poros and Sami.

If you’re traveling to Kefalonia from the mainland, you have the option to travel from the southern Greek cities of either Patras or Kyllini, with the ferry route from Kyllini being the shortest travel time, taking around 1 ½ hours. You can view ferry schedules here.

While it isn’t possible to take a direct ferry from Athens to Kefalonia, if traveling by car is an option for you, enjoying a Peloponnese and Southern Greece road trip before heading to Kefalonia is worth the time.

There are also direct ferries to the island from other neighbouring islands like Corfu and Zakynthos along with direct routes from as far afield as Brindisi and Bari in Italy.

When it comes to getting around Kefalonia, traveling by car is undoubtedly the most convenient and enjoyable way to get around the island. With your own car, a Kefalonia road trip will give you the flexibility to move at your own place and discover offbeat parts of the island.

It’s important to also note that if you plan to rent a car for your time in Kefalonia and will be traveling from the mainland, make sure to rent a car from the mainland rather than the island as costs will be higher. You can browse car hire options here.

If you’re unable to rent a car to travel around Kefalonia, Kefalonia is a great island to travel to if you’ll be depending on public transportation.

The island has an extensive public transportation system, with bus routes through the entirety of the island, except for more mountainous and remote areas in the center of the island.

Alternatively, you will need to rely on organised tours to get around the island such as this half-day tour or this private tour.

As for walkability on the island, when spending time in various towns, it’s easy and enjoyable to walk around while taking in the stunning backdrops of this lush Ionian island.

Melissani Cave

3, 4 or 5 Days in Kefalonia Itinerary

While neighbors Corfu and Zakynthos are easily the most well-known Ionian islands, Kefalonia is surprisingly an unknown island to most international travelers, which makes it a bit less busy than hotspots like Mykonos or Santorini even if you’re traveling in high season.

Throughout this Kefalonia itinerary, you’ll enjoy some of the island’s best beaches, dig into the rich culture of the island, and even explore further into the Ionian if you’re spending 5 days in Kefalonia.

Day 1 – Petani Beach & Argostoli

Petani beach.

A pleasant start to a trip to this island begins at Petani Beach, a beautiful beach in Kefalonia nestled on the west coast between rugged green mountains and pristine aquamarine waters of the Ionian Sea.

Adored and known as one of the island’s most picturesque and enchanting destinations, Petani Beach is the perfect start to a relaxing and interesting stay in Kefalonia.

On Petani Beach you’ll find chairs and umbrellas available to rent for the day, along with a few taverns along the beach to keep you satisfied with local dishes and whatever you may need during your time at the beach.

An important and practical note regarding the beaches in Kefalonia: Make sure to have water shoes with you during most beach visits (except for Makris Gialos), as the majority of beaches on Kefalonia are made up of large rocks, making it quite difficult to get around as well as unpleasant without appropriate footwear.

After spending the morning and afternoon at alluring Petani Beach, move forward with your day by heading to the island’s capital city, Argostoli. While most time spent in Kefalonia is typically at its picturesque beaches, there are a handful of towns and villages worth wandering around, with Argostoli being one of them in this part of Kefalonia.

Known for its waterfront, atmosphere, and resilience after the island’s devastating earthquake in 1953, Argostoli captures the essence of Kefalonia and its people.

Spend your time in Argostoli by walking along the charming promenade along the water, dotted with cafes and local shops filled with Kefalonian specialties.

To delve into the island’s rich history while in Argostoli, make sure to visit the Archaeological Museum as well as the iconic Drapano Bridge, the world’s longest stone bridge over a sea.

After spending time exploring the town itself, indulge in local cuisine at a traditional tavern such as Tzogias Taverna, to experience the delicious and culinary side of Kefalonia

Lighthouse in Argostoli

Day 2 – Myrtos Beach & Asos Village

Myrtos beach.

There’s no place in Kefalonia like Myrtos Beach, the island’s famed jewel located on the northwestern side of the island.

For ten consecutive years, Myrtos Beach has earned its spot among the greatest beaches in the world. With its outstanding views, clear turquoise blue water, and serene ambience, it’s no surprise why.

To begin your day, spend at least a few hours basking in the Kefalonia sun, swimming in the fresh waters of Myrtos Beach, and taking in the unforgettable views of the beach, sea, and surrounding areas. There is no doubt that visiting this beautiful beach is one of the best things to do in Kefalonia.

Topping off the enjoyable experience at Myrtos Beach, is the affordable cost of sun chairs and umbrellas to rent for the day. While other beaches on other islands charge upwards of €40 for a set of chairs, you can expect to pay around €15 for a set of chairs at Myrtos Beach.

Lunch at Alexandros

After a blissful beach day, you’ll likely have built up an appetite and be ready for a hearty lunch.

As there aren’t many options for restaurants around Myrtos Beach or at the next and final stop of the day, I suggest heading to the restaurant, “Alexandros”, just a short 2 km away from Myrtos Beach. Here you’ll find savoury Greek tavern classics, with friendly service and local ingredients and flavours.

Assos Village

While already on the northwestern side of Kefalonia, you have the perfect opportunity at your hands to visit one of the most idyllic spots of Kefalonia, the fishing village of Assos.

Assos village is the perfect example of resilience, particularly in the face of the devastating Kefalonia earthquake. Despite being significantly affected by the earthquake, the village has risen from the rubble, showcasing the unwavering spirit of its people through the rebuilding of its buildings back to their original charm.

Perched upon the edge of the water, Assos truly feels like a village stopped in time, in a blissful and picturesque bubble. Walk around the village, admire the quaint fishing boats and shops, sip a coffee by the sea and enjoy the ambience of Assos.

While in Assos, it’s also worth making the trek to Assos Castle, typically taking around 30 minutes to an hour depending on the time of year and heat.

A Venetian fortification built in 1593, Assos Castle is now a collection of ruins, free for visitors to explore, with the most impeccable views of Assos and the surrounding areas during your ascent and descent.

If you’re interested in visiting another nearby village, consider heading a bit north to explore tranquil Fiskardo, as well, which is located only about 30 minutes from Assos.

Assos Village

Day 3 – Enjoy Kefalonia’s Stunning Landscape

Melissani cave.

Begin your 3rd day in Kefalonia at one of the island’s most remarkable natural wonders, the Melissani Cave. Located near the town of Sami, this natural wonder enchants all who visit with its stunning underground lake.

Upon arrival, you’ll board a small boat with a local guide and glide through the mesmerising cave, where sunlight filters through the collapsed ceiling, creating a spellbinding play of light and shadows on the turquoise waters below.

During the summer season, the cave is open to visit daily from 9:00 AM-7:00 PM, but to have the most enhanced experience during your time in the cave, it’s best to visit around 11:00 AM-2:00 PM, where the sun shines the strongest through the roof of the cave. You can also go on a guided tour here.

Antisamos Beach

After visiting the Melissani Cave, make your way about 7 km away to one of the most unique beaches on the island, Antisamos Beach.

Antisamos offers a picturesque setting framed by lush green hills and rugged cliffs, along with multiple beach bars to choose to spend your day at, all with affordable chairs/umbrellas and delicious food.

Surrounded by abundant greenery of pine trees and vegetation, Antisamos Beach feels like a pocket somewhere far off in a tropical or Amazonian land, along with a stunning contrast to the turquoise waters.

Antisamos Beach gained fame as a filming location for the movie “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin,” and once at the beach yourself, you’ll see why they drew inspiration for the film in this remarkable location.

Antisamos Beach

After spending time at the nearby, loved beach of Antisamos, head just 4 km away to the town of Sami.

While Sami is a small town in comparison to the larger size of the capital city, Argostoli, it holds a captivating charm, making it worth the stop to have a wander and enjoy an ice cream while exploring the town’s harbour, with locals coming and going about in their daily lives.

If you have a keen interest in visiting monasteries, make sure to visit the Agrilion Monastery in Sami, an 18th-century monastery with gorgeous grounds as well as close-to-perfect views of the Kefalonian peninsula.

Day 4 – Gentilini Winery & Makris Gialos Beach

Gentilini winery.

Throughout Greece, you’ll find that most islands and regions of the country have unique wine varieties to the area. Kefalonia is no different, with an impressive wine production and a range of exceptional wines, capturing the heart and land of the island.

If you’re spending 4 days in Kefalonia, a great way to spend a large chunk of your 4th day on the island is by visiting a local winery or going on a wine tour to learn more about the wine production on the island, explore the vines and taste local varieties such as Robola and dry Mavrodaphne.

Gentilini Winery is a family-run boutique winery located on the southwest side of the island, producing top-quality wines from Kefalonia. The winery offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere reflected in its guided tours and wine tastings at the winery.

The winery is open from Orthodox Easter to late October every year, with affordable wine tastings and tours starting at €10, with prices increasing depending on the number of wines you wish to try during your visit.

Makris Gialos Beach

After a morning and early afternoon of wine tasting, continue a short journey of 2 km away to Makris Gialos Beach, a must for beach lovers in Kefalonia looking to enjoy a classic Greek beach experience.

Located near the town of Argostoli, this beach boasts golden sands and crystal-clear turquoise waters with a large stretch of sand available to just lay your towel if you’re not interested in paying for chairs/umbrellas.

Otherwise, Makris Gialos Beach is well-equipped with sunbeds, umbrellas, and beachside taverns, offering comfort and convenience. Whether you’re looking to relax under the Mediterranean sun, swim in the refreshing waters, or indulge in delicious Greek cuisine, Makris Gialos Beach promises a delightful experience that will leave you rejuvenated and relaxed.

If you’re not keen to hang out on the beach, then consider heading further west from Argostoli to explore the charming little village of Lixouri instead.

Makris Gialos Beach

Day 5 – Mount Ainos or Day Trip to Ithaca

For those lucky enough to spend 5 days in Kefalonia, I recommend one of two options for your 5th and final day; a day spent hiking on the island’s Mount Ainos National Park or venturing out on a day trip to the nearby island of Ithaca.

Mount Ainos National Park

Mount Ainos, the only national park located on a Greek island, is a captivating experience for nature enthusiasts visiting the island of Kefalonia. The national park offers several hiking trails of varying difficulty levels, with the most popular trail being the marked circular path that leads to the summit.

Upon arrival at the national park, stop by the visitor center at the park entrance to get information, maps, and valuable insights into the flora and conservation efforts on the mountain.

A paradise for hikers, Mount Ainos National Park is not only full of invigorating trails but also abundant wildlife and outstanding views of Kefalonia and the surrounding Ionian islands of Zakynthos and Ithaca. Make sure to keep an eye out for the mystical wild horses of Mount Ainos, typically found free roaming as herds close to the summit of the mountain.

To visit, you can visit independently by car or take part in a guided group tour of the park, as it’s not possible to visit the national park by public transportation.

If you prefer to skip a day of hiking up Kefalonia’s Mount Ainos and would like to explore further, another option for day 5 is to take a day trip to the neighboring island of Ithaca, the home of Odysseus.

Ithaca is easily reached by ferry in just 30 minutes from the Port of Sami, making it the perfect addition to any Kefalonia itinerary for those hoping to visit this legendary island, known from Homer’s Odyssey in Greek mythology. Alternatively, you can go on a boat tour.

While Kefalonia has a hefty heart of tourism, Ithaca in comparison still feels quite wild, with a strong authenticity thanks to the lack of tourists visiting, which is why it’s included in this travel guide.

While in Ithaca, explore the picturesque port of Vathi, the Cave of Nymphs, the renowned archaeological site of Odysseus’ Palace, where history and myth intertwine, and enjoy the refreshing waters of one of the island’s tranquil beaches, such as Gidaki beach.

All in all, a day trip to Ithaca from Kefalonia is the ideal way to explore Greek mythology and experience another side of the Ionian islands.

Kefalonia or Zakynthos: The Honest Comparison You Need!

Kefalonia or Zakynthos: The Honest Comparison You Need!

Greece has no shortage of stunning destinations, each unique in its own way. Kefalonia and Zakynthos are two such destinations, both blessed with incredible natural beauty and a laid-back island vibe. However, if you can only visit one, how do you choose between them? This post aims to give you an honest, detailed comparison between Kefalonia and Zakynthos, so you can make an informed decision for your next summer getaway.

Location and Accessibility

Kefalonia or Zakynthos: The Honest Comparison You Need!

When it comes to location and accessibility, both Kefalonia and Zakynthos are easily accessible by ferries, planes, or buses. Zakynthos is located to the southeast of Kefalonia, and both islands belong to the Ionian island group. Zakynthos is smaller than Kefalonia, and visitors can easily explore the island on foot. Kefalonia, on the other hand, is quite large and requires transportation.

Kefalonia or Zakynthos: The Honest Comparison You Need!

When it comes to beaches, both islands offer some of the most beautiful in Greece. Kefalonia’s most famous beach is Myrtos, a long, curved stretch of turquoise water framed by white cliffs. Zakynthos, on the other hand, has the iconic Navagio Beach, also known as Shipwreck Beach, which features a rusted shipwreck as its centerpiece. While both beaches are breathtakingly beautiful, if you want to avoid crowds, Kefalonia’s beaches are a better bet. Zakynthos is a more popular tourist destination, so its beaches can get quite crowded.

Natural Beauty

Kefalonia or Zakynthos: The Honest Comparison You Need!

Both islands boast mesmerizing natural beauty that you won’t find anywhere else in the world. Zakynthos’ Blue Caves and Keri Caves are known to be the most popular natural attractions on the island. The Blue Caves, located on the north coast of Zakynthos, are a network of sea caves that offer dazzling blue waters, while Keri Caves, located on the southern coast, are known for their magnificent rock formations and crystal-clear waters.

Kefalonia, on the other hand, is equally blessed with natural beauty. The island offers majestic landscapes, including underground lakes, picturesque mountains, and stunning waterfalls. Visit the Melissani Cave, where you can ride a boat through an underground lake with striking shades of blue and green.

Natural Landscape

Kefalonia or Zakynthos: The Honest Comparison You Need!

Both islands offer stunning examples of Greece’s natural beauty. Kefalonia is the larger of the two, so it has more varied geography. It’s home to the impressive Mount Ainos and the Melissani Cave, where you can take a boat ride on an underground lake. Zakynthos, meanwhile, is known for its impressive marine life, and if you’re lucky, you may even spot a loggerhead turtle. It’s also home to the Blue Caves, where you can swim in the vivid blue waters surrounded by towering white cliffs.

Kefalonia or Zakynthos: The Honest Comparison You Need!

If nightlife is your thing, Zakynthos has more options. The island’s main town, Laganas, is known for its bars and clubs, and the energy in the town can be electric at night. Kefalonia, on the other hand, is more low-key when it comes to nightlife. There are certainly bars and restaurants to keep you entertained in the evening, but the island is better suited to those looking for a more relaxed break.

Food and Drink

Kefalonia or Zakynthos: The Honest Comparison You Need!

Greek cuisine is renowned for its deliciousness, and both Kefalonia and Zakynthos excel in this area. Kefalonia is famous for its seafood dishes, including fresh fish caught that day and traditional Greek octopus stew. Zakynthos, meanwhile, is known for its sweet wine and treats like mandolato, a type of nougat candy. Both islands have plenty of tavernas serving traditional Greek dishes, so you won’t be disappointed on either front.

Culture and History

Kefalonia or Zakynthos: The Honest Comparison You Need!

Both Kefalonia and Zakynthos have a rich history and culture that is worth exploring. Kefalonia is known for its traditional villages, such as Fiskardo, and the stunning Assos Castle. Zakynthos has a long history with the Venetians, and visitors can explore the Venetian Castle and the Byzantine Museum.

Kefalonia or Zakynthos: The Honest Comparison You Need!

In terms of budget, Kefalonia is generally more expensive than Zakynthos. Accommodation, dining, and transportation can cost more in Kefalonia, especially during peak season.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, both Kefalonia and Zakynthos have so much to offer, whether you’re looking for natural beauty, cultural experiences or good times with friends. It ultimately comes down to personal preference. If you crave a more peaceful and secluded vacation, Kefalonia with its less crowded beaches and laid-back vibe is perfect for you. If you’re looking for a lively night scene and a wide range of activities, Zakynthos is the way to go. One thing is for sure, whichever island you choose, you will not be disappointed.

Kefalonia or Zakynthos: which Ionian island in Greece should you choose?

Which island to choose: zakynthos vs. kefalonia.

To be honest: if you have the time, be sure to visit both islands! Even though they are close to each other, Zakynthos and Kefalonia are completely different. Both special and beautiful in their own way. So if you have enough time, it is nice to visit both to experience the contrasts yourself. But, they are not islands that you have seen in two days, so if you have less than a week, then certainly do not go to great lengths to visit both Kefalonia and Zakynthos. Rather choose the island that suits you best and take the time to enjoy the beautiful surroundings!

In this blog we describe both islands and then indicate which island you can choose based on your own travel needs.

Kefalonia (also known as Cephalonia) is the greenest island of the Ionian Islands. It is known for its tranquility, mountains and authentic fishing villages. It is not crowded with tourists here, but there are plenty of facilities. The center and west of Kefalonia are the quietest. Especially the Paliki peninsula is very low key. On the beaches here you will mainly find local Greeks.

The south of Kefalonia is the most touristic. Here you will find several beaches with beach clubs. In the southwest there are many families, in the southeast, around Skala you will find the more partying tourists. The east has pebble beaches, just like the north. In the north lies Fiskardo, a luxurious harbor town with beautiful yachts.

The interior of Kefalonia is characterized by vineyards, mountains and small farms. There is nothing but peace and space here. You hardly see tourists. Along the long coastline, winding roads take you to the most beautiful viewpoints. Here high cliffs go into the turquoise sea. Between the foothills of the mountains you will find beautiful bays, often with pebble beaches.

Zakynthos is the southern brother of Kefalonia. But just as brother and sister can be very different, Zakynthos is also very different from Kefalonia. Less green, flatter and more focused on tourism.

Zakynthos is also smaller than Kefalonia. You also have less high cliffs here than on Kefalonia, but still plenty of places in the west of the country to enjoy a spectacular view. Zakynthos was hit in 1953 by a major earthquake that completely destroyed most of the villages. As a result, there are not many authentic villages to be found, but fortunately Zakynthos town has largely survived. Here you will find some of the oldest buildings on the island.

Most tourism can be found in the west of the country, around Zakynthos city (the capital) Tsilivi and Argassi. In the south you have Laganas with a bar culture that attracts many young people. The north is known for the beautiful Blue Caves and in the west you have great cliffs and beaches that can only be reached by boat.

Choose Kefalonia if:

Choose kefalonia if you are looking for peace.

Kefalonia certainly has a touristic side, but you will find much more tranquility here. Beaches are less crowded, there are not so many beach clubs and commercial opportunities on beaches and in the villages. Some beaches you have all to yourself, other beaches are mainly visited by locals. Read all about the best beaches in Kefalonia here.

Where Zakynthos is best known for the partying, on Kefalonia you will only find the real party tourism in the village of Skala. Furthermore, the island is aimed at the quieter visitors and also very much at its own inhabitants! It attracts a different audience and you feel that in the vibe.

Choose Kefalonia if you want more authenticity

As you could read above, Kefalonia is much less touristy than Zakynthos. People live on the island all year round and that creates a completely different atmosphere. In addition, this island was less affected by the earthquake of 1953, which wiped out almost all villages on Zakynthos. So you will find many old villages on Kefalonia. We found the most beautiful villages Asos, Fiskardo and Agia Effimia. But the capital Argostolli is also nice to visit.

Because people live in Kefalonia all year round, you will find more coffee shops and restaurants that are not only aimed at tourists. Nice! Read all about the best restaurants and hotspots on Kefalonia here!

Choose Kefalonia if you like mountains

Zakynthos also has some beautiful hills, but Kefalonia is much more mountainous. Here you will find Mount Ainos Oros, which is over 1600 meters high. You can hike to the top of this mountain from where you have a beautiful view.

Where Zakynthos is rocky and dry, Kefalonia is very green. Beautiful coniferous forests, green countryside and lots of variety in between.

Choose Kefalonia if you don’t mind driving longer distances

The roads on Kefalonia are good, but that is also necessary because the distances are large. Because of the many mountains, you sometimes have to drive around, but the island itself is certainly not small. And most of the sights and the different beaches on Kefalonia are scattered and not very close to each other. Read all about the best sights on Kefalonia here!

Don’t mind spending a little longer in the car? Or maybe you like to stay at several places on the island and make it a road trip? Then Kefalonia is totally your thing!

Choose Zakynthos if:

Choose zakynthos if you want to drive short distances.

Zakynthos is not only smaller, the distances between the highlights are also not that great. Many of the sights are located in the east of the country. You usually reach this within half an hour to an hour from the capital.

Keep in mind that the roads are not always well maintained. Especially in the west, roads are not always great. You also sometimes come across a group of goats on the road. So don’t drive too fast.

Choose Zakynthos if you want to party

Zakynthos attracts many partying tourists. Especially around Laganas it is full of bars and clubs. This is not quite what we were looking for on holiday as it was a babymoon to Zakynthos for us. So we stayed in the middle of the island.

If this is your thing, know that you can party well on Zakynthos. Not only in Laganas but also in other places such as Tsilivi or Zakynthos town you will find plenty of bars and clubs.

Choose Zakynthos if you like restaurants and beach bars

Zakynthos is geared towards tourism. There are nice restaurants everywhere. Incidentally, also less nice restaurants, you know the typical tourist spots where you get a menu in your own language including pictures of the food. Read our blog about restaurants on Zakynthos that are really worth it. Kefalonia also has nice restaurants, but not so many. And in some villages you will find restaurants that are really aimed at the local population.

You will find several beach bars and beach clubs on every beach on Zakynthos. Go to Banana Beach for some very large beach clubs, or visit Tsilivi Beach for beach restaurants aimed at children. For the real Ibiza Vibe you go to Cotton Club . Read our blog with the best beaches of Zakynthos here. On Kefalonia you only have a few beach clubs and certainly not such luxurious places as you have on Zakynthos.

Conclusion: which island is best, Zakynthos or Kefalonia?

So there is no clear answer to the question: which island is more fun, Zakynthos or Kefalonia? It all depends on what type of traveler you are. Do you like a party, do you want to go to a luxurious beach club or to a town with a lot of tourism around you? Then Zakynthos is really your thing. Are you looking for peace and tranquility, do you like hiking and do you want more authenticity, then you will enjoy Kefalonia the most!

Hopefully the above information will help you make the right choice.

In the summer there is a daily ferry from Pessada (near the airport on Kefalonia) to Agios Nikolaos (in the north of Zakynthos). And vice versa. This is with the company Ionion Lines and the costs are 10 euros per person. You can also take this ferry by car, but we do not know what the costs are. We bought our tickets at Chionis Tours in Zakynthos town. If you do not take a car with you on the ferry, it is also possible to go to the harbor on spec and buy tickets there.

Advantage of this ferry: cheap and two ferries depart daily. You can bring a car. You are close to the airport of Kefalonia and can be picked up by your car rental company (costs are around 20 euros). The ferry only takes 1.5 hours.

Disadvantage of this ferry: Agios Nikolaos is not centrally located on Zakynthos. From here you have to take a taxi (about 50 euros) to Zakynthos town or the airport to get a rental car.

2. Luxury Azimut Ferry:

In the summer there is also a luxury boat from Sami (in the east of Kefalonia) to Zakynthos town three times a week. And vice versa. This is with the company Azimut. The costs are around 15 euros per person. However, you can’t go here with a car. It is a smaller boat. You can buy tickets at Isala Travel or  Marketou Travel .

Advantage of this ferry: you will be dropped off directly in Zakynthos town. That is a nice central location on Zakynthos. If you stay in Sami on Kefalonia, you will be directly at your destination. The boat is a bit more luxurious.

Disadvantage of this ferry: Sami on Kefalonia is not close to the airport or car rental companies. A taxi to the airport is very expensive (100 euros). The boat only goes 3 times a week and the ride takes longer (2.5 hours). It is also not possible to bring a car. Reservations are necessary as space is limited.

Conclusion: the best between Zakynthos and Kefalonia

The choice of which ferry is best for your trip between Zakynthos and Kefalonia depends on your itinerary (Zakynthos to Kefalonia or the other way), where you stay, whether you bring a car and on which day you want to travel.

Car rental on Zakynthos or Kefalonia

For both Zakynthos and Kefalonia we recommend that you rent a car if you want to explore the islands. There is hardly any public transport.

We ourselves always rent cars through Sunny Cars. The advantage is that they act as an intermediary and if something should go wrong, they are available 24/7. You are always well insured and do not have to deal with unexpected costs afterwards.

Very indepth. I'd add that (aside from maybe Easjet), Zakynthos in the English-speaking community is more known by it's Venetian-name as Zante and that name continued when the British governed the islands in the 19th century. Kefalonia not recommended for those who get car sick or driving on mountainous cliff-top roads, but the roads on the west have gorgeous views. If driving from the airport, GPS or SatNAV is a must.

Hello, is the Azimut ferry still in operation for summer 2024? Or is that changed to Lefkada Palace? Thank you.

Hi Ellen, I don't know about any change but we have not been here this year so perhaps check in with the company themselves. Kind regards, Charlotte

Ionian Paradise: The Best Beaches in Kefalonia and Zakynthos

Known for their crystalline, picture-perfect waters, beautiful caves, and diverse beaches, the two islands offer little paradises for all tastes.

BY TRAVEL TEAM

Published 14 may 2024, galazies limnes, zakynthos.

People flock to Kefalonia and Zakynthos, two standout islands in the Ionian Sea, mostly to enjoy bathing in their stunning shores. From secluded coves to wide, family-friendly swaths of sand, Kefalonia offers a rugged landscape with beaches often framed by dramatic cliffs and lush greenery, while Zakynthos is known for its iconic Shipwreck Beach, accessible only by sea among many other outstanding options.

Beaches at both islands provide an idyllic backdrop for a range of activities, from snorkeling and watersports to leisurely meals and sunbathing. This guide to the best beaches on these two islands highlights the slightly less popular and busy beaches and centers on the beauty of nature. Mind you, in peak season it’ll be busy wherever you go, unless you swim early in the morning or late in the evening.

The Best, Most Unmissable Beaches

zakynthos kefalonia trip

Kefalonia is a land of countless amazing beaches, all distinct and captivating. It would take around a week of exploration to visit all of the island’s beaches. Whether you’re a fan of milky blue seas or calm crystal-clear waters, Kefalonia is the place to be.

Best Beaches in Kefalonia and Zakynthos / Xi Beach

Located on the southwestern side of the island just after Lixouri, Xi is Kefalonia’s most distinctive beach. Easily accessible, with crystal clear shallow waters, it also has water sports facilities, numerous beach bars, sunbeds and umbrellas. What makes it stand out is its dark brown-red sand, attributed to its clay composition. Take the opportunity to enjoy a natural spa experience – smear your whole body with clay, let it dry for 10 minutes and then plunge into the sea. Clay helps to detoxify and tighten the skin and here you’ll have an entire beach full of clay sand at your disposal.

Antisamos beach

Located on the western side of Kefalonia, near Sami, facing Ithaca, Antisamos is renowned for waters that change color, from ultramarine-blue to cyan-green. Located in a closed bay andsurrounded by a lush green landscape, the beach has coarse pebbles, thus it’s probably a good idea to bring your beach shoes.

Best Beaches in Kefalonia and Zakynthos / Fteri

Pericles Merakos

Located in Paliki’s northern coast, Fteri is framed by lush hills and distinguished by its pebbly shores, limestone cliffs, sea caves, and vivid blue waters. Accessible via boat from Zola Harbor or via a 45-minute hike, this is officially a stunningly beautiful place. For essentials, pack sturdy footwear, water, snacks, a hat, and sunscreen.

Emblisi beach / Shutterstock

In a beautiful, closed bay on the northeastern side of Kefalonia, near Fiskardo, Emplisi beach is made up of stark white pebbles, while the bottom of the sea is sandy. The large smooth slab-like rocks on the left side of the beach are ideal for sunbathing on. Meanwhile, the beach has a fascinating seabed that’s ideal for snorkeling. There are no umbrellas and sunbeds, but there is a canteen where you can get the essentials.

Myrtos from above / Shutterstock

Myrtos, the postcard-perfect beach with azure waters and white sand is the island’s number one attraction. Surrounded by dramatic towering cliffs, this world-famous beach has been ranked among the best globally. It is located in the northern part of Kefalonia, three kilometers after the village of Divarata. As you head down to the beach, admire the magical beauty of the coast from above and take lots of pictures. Unfortunately, the beach offers no natural shade, but a part of it is serviced with sunbeds and umbrellas.

Petani beach / Shutterstock

The name comes from the Homeric word “epipetanoi”, which means an area that’s rich in water all year round. White pebbles, limestone walls, crystal clear waters and a lush green landscape all combine to create a work of art. The springs that flow from the mountain, pour into the sea and the water currents dye the waters in all shades of blue. Legend has it that in ancient times, fairies washed their clothes in the springs while enjoying the view.

Makris Gialos

Makris Gialos beach / Shutterstock

Lengthy and cosmopolitan, Makris Gialos is the beach closest to Argostoli. Along its golden sandy shore you will find beach bars renting umbrellas and sunbeds, some of which may require reservations, especially in August. There are also water sports facilities.

Dafnoudi beach

Close to the chic, lively town of Fiskardo on Kefalonia’s northern coast, this beach has large pebbles, dense greenery, and clear emerald waters. Access is via a short, easy trek from a parking area near Antipata village. Remember to bring all essentials for the day, such as water, shade, and snorkeling gear.

zakynthos kefalonia trip

On the beaches of Zakynthos, the protected Caretta Caretta sea turtle buries her eggs until they hatch and the baby turtles set off on their dangerous journey to the sea. Access is allowed until sunset, and anyone lucky enough to observe the baby turtles as they race into the water before darkness falls, is sure to enjoy a remarkable sight.

Consider exploring the beautiful beaches of Zakynthos by renting a car. With many of the best beaches located outside of town, having your own transportation is essential for a convenient and enjoyable beach day.

Marathonisi

Marathonisi

A small, private, uninhabited island located very close to Keri beach, Marathonisi is accessible by boat, but anchor throwing is prohibited as it is part of the protected marine park. One beach on the island is pebbly, while the other is a large sandy strip that slopes into the sea. Both are beautiful.

Daphne is a small and secluded beach located in the western part of Zakynthos. It has crystal-clear waters and fine sand and is surrounded by a dense pine forest. Daphne is an ideal choice for those wishing to escape the crowds and enjoy a peaceful swim.

Porto Zoro beach / Pericles Merakos

Porto Zoro is a quiet, sandy beach known for the large rocks in the water that create a special scenery. There are sun loungers and umbrellas available, and access is easy with a parking space nearby.

Agios Nikolaos

Gerakas beach / Shutterstock

In the picturesque Vassilikos region of the island, Agios Nikolaos has breathtaking scenery, with crystal-clear waters and sandy shores. Its name is derived from the charming chapel at the edge of the beach. Visitors can enjoy a variety of water sports, sun loungers, and beach bars.

Pelagaki beach / Pericles Merakos

Gerakas is one of the island’s most beautiful and organized beaches, located in the southeastern part of Zakynthos near the village of Vassilikos. It is a protected area within the Zakynthos National Marine Park, known for its golden, fine sand and warm waters. The Caretta Caretta turtle visits the beach to lay its eggs, and access is restricted after sunset. The use of umbrellas is only allowed in certain areas in order to protect the turtle eggs.

Pelagaki is located on the northeastern side of Zakynthos, in a coastal area belonging to the territory of the mountainous village of Koroni, situated inland at an altitude of 161 meters. It lies between two low hills, and there is no road leading directly to it, which means a little walking is required to get there. Its shoreline is covered in fine pebbles, and there are low-height rocky ends ideal for diving off or snorkeling around.

Porto Koula

Near the charming village of Agios Sostis in Laganas bay, Porto Koula is a green oasis that retains its traditional character. Olive tree-lined paths lead visitors to the sandy beach, where they can relax on sun loungers and under umbrellas. There is also a beach bar and traditional tavernas serving delicious local cuisine. In addition, some tourist shops offer souvenirs and other goods.

Navagio beach / Marketing Greece

Navagio Beach, which stands for ‘shipwreck’ in Greek, is a strong contender for Greece’s most Instagrammable spot and deserves an honorary mention. Unfortunately, since 2022, this stunning location has been inaccessible to both locals and visitors due to a 5.4-magnitude earthquake that caused large rocks from the surrounding cliffs to tumble into the bay. Previously, Navagio Beach was only reachable by boat, adding to its allure. With its mesmerizing waters, soft golden sand, and dramatic cliffs, it’s easy to see why Navagio Beach became the iconic symbol of Zakynthos. This unique setting creates a breathtaking backdrop that captivates all who lay eyes on it.
