Fuel Cost Calculator

This calculator can estimate fuel cost according to the distance of a trip, the fuel efficiency of the car, and the price of gas using various units.

Related Gas Mileage Calculator | Mileage Calculator

The price of gas may go up or down, but it's always a major expense for most drivers. The average American driver spends about $3,000 per year on gas, according to the American Automobile Association. Some of the practical ways to reduce fuel costs are listed below.

Use public transportation

Walking or biking does not consume fuel, and as such does not accumulate fuel cost. In most cases, public transport alternatives to cars such as buses, trains, and trolleys are viable options of reducing fuel costs. Due to the communal nature of ride sharing, the fuel costs of operating public transport are generally less than the fuel costs associated with each individual operating their own vehicle. In some places, public transport is free. Considering the costs associated with owning or renting a car creates even more incentive to use other modes of transportation.

Also known as car sharing, carpooling is the arrangement between two or more people to travel to a shared destination in a single vehicle. Although a heavier car consumes slightly more fuel, it is usually much more efficient than two people driving separate cars towards the same destination.

Use a more fuel efficient vehicle

Driving a smaller car makes a great difference – the fuel cost is about half for a small sedan than for a very large SUV. Similarly, drive with a less powerful engine than you need. Don't pay for an eight-cylinder engine when four cylinders work just fine. Unless you're hauling heavy loads on a routine basis, the extra cost of a bigger engine results in more money spent on gasoline.

Tune the engine

A properly tuned engine maximizes power and can greatly enhance fuel efficiency. But tuning the car engine is often done to increase horsepower – that's not the way to save on fuel. Make sure the tuner gets the message.

Fixing a car that is noticeably out of tune or has failed an emissions test can improve its gas mileage by an average of 4 percent – this amount will vary depending on the nature of the repair.

Fixing a serious maintenance problem, such as a faulty oxygen sensor, can improve your mileage by as much as 40 percent.

Placing ornaments and ground effects, aerodynamics kits, and airfoils, such as deck-lid spoilers, may make you feel good, but they also increase the car's drag and make it require more fuel. Such accessories offer no real handling enhancements, although they may look nice on your car. Also, place signs or cargo on the roof so that the object angles forward. This will reduce the frontal area of the object, and it will cause less drag, and cause you to use less fuel.

Adjust tires

Make sure the tires are inflated to the right levels. Properly inflated tires can reduce fuel consumption by up to 3 percent. Your tires also lose about 1 PSI per month, and when the tires are cold (e.g., in the winter), their pressure will decrease due to the thermal contraction of the air. It is recommended to check tires at least monthly, preferably weekly. Having properly inflated tires will also help you avoid uneven wear on the tread.

Gas stations don't always have accurate equipment for this purpose. Sometimes gas stations use automatic air compressors that stop at a pre-determined level. To make sure you inflate to the right level, double-check pressure with your own gauge.

Recommended inflation pressures are for cold tires; put about 3 PSI more in if the tires have been driven on a while. Inflate to the pressure recommended by the car manufacturer, not to the level stamped on the tire.

Use the correct motor oil

Gas mileage will improve by 1 percent to 2 percent if you use the manufacturer's recommended grade of motor oil. For example, using 10W-30 motor oil in an engine designed to use 5W-30 can reduce your gas mileage by a considerable amount. Using 5W-30 in an engine designed for 5W-20 can lower your gas mileage by 1 percent to 2 percent. Also, look for motor oil that says "Energy Conserving" on the API performance symbol to be sure it contains friction-reducing additives.

Plan trips carefully

There is no more obvious way to save gas than to drive a shorter distance.

Plan your route carefully. With today's GPS route planners, it's easy to calculate a straight route with the fewest stops and diversions. It is also possible to judge which route will have the least traffic. Take highways instead of local routes or city streets when possible – the steady speed maximizes fuel efficiency.

When driving in a city, try to park in a central location, and then walk from one appointment to another, or take public transportation. Ragged stop-and-go city driving is terrible for your gas mileage. This also saves the high level of gas used in parking and pulling out in a parking lot.

Factors that determine the fuel price

Government intervention.

Governments may intervene in gasoline (referred to as petrol in some parts of the world) markets by taxation, which may raise prices for consumers within or outside the governmental territory. Similarly, certain industries may receive financial support from the government to promote commercial enterprise (a subsidy). Generally, subsidized products or services can be sold at lower prices.

Financial markets

The global oil price fluctuates constantly. The key crudes quoted are Brent and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) in the unit of US$ per barrel. The retail fuel price is closely related to the global oil price fluctuation.

Political elements such as structure, regime, personnel, and events can all affect the cost of fuel. For instance, a change in leadership from a leader who doesn't believe in climate change to one who does may result in changes to the cost of fuel for consumers based on different policies, such as choosing not to subsidize fuel. Political relationships between countries are also a factor; nations can go to war over resources, or form alliances in order to trade, both of which can affect the cost of fuel.

Geographic area

Certain geographical areas or countries in the world have an abundance of oil, while others do not have a single drop. Regional consumers within close proximity of high supplies of oil are more likely to have lower costs of fuel due to ease of access. Areas without their own supply of oil that are isolated from the rest of the world (such as islands in the Pacific) can find fuel to be relatively expensive.

Natural disaster or weather

Earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, major floods, and other such nature-related phenomena can affect the production, manufacturing, and logistics of gasoline, which can possibly affect the price of fuel. For instance, a snowstorm may close certain roads, disallowing the transportation of the resource and driving up fuel costs in these areas. Hurricanes or earthquakes can damage oil refineries, abruptly halting production, which can also eventually increase fuel costs.

A Baltic and Scandinavian Christmas | A 7000 km Cruise and Road Trip across Germany, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, and Sweden from the Netherlands | Travel Itinerary, Tips, and Tricks

pinterest pin A Baltic and Scandinavian Christmas

Today I’m going to tell you a Christmas story. An epic Christmas story of a 7000 km cruise and road trip across Germany, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, and Sweden from the Netherlands during the Christmas of 2019, that turned out to be one of the most memorable trips of our lifetime. So, let the journey begin!

The Itinerary

Day 1: driving from hoofddorp (the netherlands) to berlin (germany).

On the early morning of day 1, we started from our home in Hoofddorp (the Netherlands), for a 675 km drive to Berlin (Germany). We made it in roughly 9 hours amidst some severe holiday traffic. Upon reaching Berlin, we checked in to our accommodation and slept off.

Day 2: Exploring Berlin (Germany)

Spent the whole day exploring Berlin, Germany’s capital city. Though we had been to many parts of Germany before, this was our first time in Berlin. As photographers, we opined that the city doesn’t have a lot to offer, but it indeed has a charm of its own (especially during Christmas, there’s a lot of decorations around the city which adds to the ambiance). It’s super busy but clean and fresh (as the 67,607 tons of bombing during 5 years of WWII left 80% of the city destroyed and was rebuilt entirely from scratch. It was estimated that for every citizen of Berlin, there were 30 cubic meters of rubble). We started the day with the Berlin Cathedral, then went to the East Side Gallery (remains of the Berlin Wall), witnessed a lovely sunset at the Brandenburg Gate, and finally enjoyed one of the many Christmas markets of Berlin.

Day 3: Driving from Berlin (Germany) to Vilnius (Lithuania)

Drove 1032 km from Berlin (Germany) to Vilnius (Lithuania), crossing the rest of Germany, the entire country of Poland, and half of Lithuania in approximately 14 hours, crossing an international time zone thereby losing an hour. Upon reaching Vilnius, we checked in to our accommodation and slept off.

Day 4: Exploring Vilnius (Lithuania)

Explored Vilnius, the capital city of Lithuania, for the whole day. We found Vilnius, a tiny yet pretty town with a historic town center and lovely Christmas ambiance. Small yet beautiful Christmas markets, with 27 meters (around 90 feet) tall metal Christmas Tree made with 600+ branches and over 5 km of lighting themed on the Queen of Chess (ranked as finest Christmas Tree in Europe that year), surrounded by stalls offering well-crafted distinct handmade products, a wide variety of dining establishments open till midnight and youth choirs shouting Christmas carols all around make Vilnius a lovely Christmas destination.

Day 5: Driving from Vilnius (Lithuania) to Riga (Latvia) via Hill of Crosses in Jurgaiciai (Lithuania)

Drove 220 km from Vilnius, Lithuania to the Hill of Crosses in Jurgaiciai (Lithuania) in roughly 2.5 hours which is a collection of over 200,000 wooden crosses erected on a small hill, one of the most spectacular sights in the Baltic countries. Though all these crosses tell us about personal and public misfortunes and catastrophes (e.g., one cross was put after the wreck of the ferry “Estonia”), it is considered an expression of the people’s spontaneous religiousness. It is a symbol not of grief and death but of faith, love, and sacrifice. From here, the Pope blessed all people of Lithuania and all of Christian Europe.

Then we drove 125 km further in another 2 hours to reach Riga (Latvia), and witnessed a beautiful sunset (around 15:25) from the Skyline Bar located on the 26th floor of Radisson Blu hotel. After that, we checked in to our accommodation and slept off.

Day 6: Exploring Riga (Latvia)

Spent the whole Christmas Day exploring the beautiful old town center of Riga, the capital city of Latvia. We found the old town of Riga to be very impressive and the Christmas market of Riga to be smaller than that of Vilnius but very cozy and ambiant and undoubtedly worth a visit when in the Baltics during Christmas. As Indians, we also had a couple of beautiful experiences like a Latvian busker coming up to us to inquire which country we come from and upon knowing we’re from India playing one of India’s most popular patriotic songs, “Saare Jahan se achha Hindustan humaara, hum bulbulein hain iski ye gulsitan humaara” meaning “In the whole world our India is the best, we are its singing birds, and it’s our land of flowers,” exclusively in our honor as we were the only Indian family present in the crowd or witnessing Hare Krishna sankirtana from ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) consisting of primarily Latvian Krishna devotees amidst the hustle and bustle of the Christmas Market of Riga on Christmas Day setting an iconic example of communal peace, harmony, and tolerance in these difficult times.

Day 7: Driving from Riga (Latvia) to Tallinn (Estonia)

On the next morning of Boxing Day, we drove 315 km north to the city of Tallinn, capital of Estonia situated on the Baltic Sea, in roughly 4 hours. We enjoyed the lunch with a grand view in the Skybar Lounge24, located on the 24th floor of the Radisson Blu hotel. After that, we headed straight to our warm and cozy accommodation amidst a light snow shower and slept off for the night.

Day 8: Exploring Tallinn (Estonia)

Spent the whole day exploring Tallinn, the capital city of Estonia, amidst a light snow shower with a chilling temperature of minus 10 degrees Celsius. We found Tallinn to be small yet lively and beautiful. And the Christmas decor is probably the best among the Baltics (Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia). Also, we observed it to be the busiest among the 3 capital cities of the Baltics (Vilnius, Riga, and Tallinn) probably because it falls in the famous route of many cruise/ferry package tour lines that make rounds between the major cities on the Baltic Sea viz. Stockholm (Sweden), Helsinki (Finland), and Tallinn (Estonia), including the St. Peter’s Line, the only cruise company that takes you to St. Petersburg (Russia) from Helsinki and Tallinn without the need for a Russian visa (St. Petersburg lies in the European part of Russia). However, on the downside, what we observed is that at Tallinn and Estonia at large, customer service cannot be called ‘Best in class’, the locals can sometimes be a bit rough, rude or pushy, and the country is substantially expensive compared to Lithuania and Latvia (probably as per the age-old adage that says the further north you go the more expensive it gets and Tallinn is just 2.5 hours sailing from Helsinki, Finland in the Nordics/Scandinavia which is known for being super expensive anyway).

Day 9: Sailing from Tallinn (Estonia) to Helsinki (Finland), and then exploring Helsinki (Finland)

Around noon, boarded the Eckero Line Cruise (with our car) from Tallinn to cross the Baltic Sea and reach Helsinki in roughly 2.5 hours. The cruise was well equipped and offered us an opportunity to relax in the warmth amidst minus 12 degrees and watch the sun come out through the clouds as we sailed over the Baltic.

baltic cruise tallinn estonia to helsinki finland

Once we landed in Helsinki, we set off to explore the city on foot after parking the car in one of the parking garages in the center of the town. We feel the best words to describe Helsinki are posh, elegant, and expensive. Talking about Christmas Market (generally in Europe Christmas Markets run from early/mid-December to the end of the first week of January), though in the evening we were able to catch a glimpse of the Christmas decors that the city was adorned with, I understood from the locals that the main (and the most beautiful) Christmas Market just in front of the grand Helsinki Cathedral was functional only till Christmas (though the Christmas Tree in front of the Helsinki Cathedral was still there and a smaller Christmas Market was still functional at the Market Square). But our disappointment was compensated by the grandeur of the Helsinki Cathedral and a stunning sunset that we witnessed from the high vantage point of the Cathedral stairs.

Day 10: Exploring Helsinki (Finland), and sailing to Stockholm (Sweden)

Spent the day until evening exploring some unique Finnish architecture typically characterized by environmentalism and minimalism in Helsinki, the capital city of Finland, in entirely overcast, freezing, and windy weather. We explored the famous Sibelius Monument (located within the Sibelius Park) designed by Eila Hiltunen dedicated to the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius (1865–1957), the only place in the entire city of Helsinki where we found tourists in abundance even on a dreary Sunday morning followed by the Temppeliaukio Church (nicknamed as the Rock Church as it was built directly inside the solid rock by architect brothers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen (opened in 1969) and the Uspenski Cathedral (whose interiors are famous for its ornate decorations but unfortunately we missed it as being a Sunday the church closed at 15:00 and we managed to reach there only by 15:10).

sibelius monument steel pipes helsinki finland

After that, we headed straight to the port of Helsinki to onboard the overnight (18 hours) cruise to Stockholm (Sweden). The cruise was very well equipped with all amenities that one expects from a one-night cruise liner - Around 1500 rooms/cabins, supermarkets, shopping malls, spas, salons, cafeterias, restaurants, buffets, bars, casinos, children play areas, video games, movie theaters, night clubs, dance performances, piano concerts, rock shows, quiz shows and several other competitions going on in different timings on different decks. However, the weather was tremendously stormy (as the wind we faced in Helsinki refused to subside), especially towards the night that made standing and especially sleeping extremely difficult as the cruise kept going a few meters up and then falling with a resounding thud on the waves every second. So we tried enjoying the concert (which was accompanied by high spirited people ballroom dancing to the tunes while rolling from one side of the dance floor to the other as the ship dwindled on the rough sea) while waiting for the waves to subside (which didn’t happen anyway) until 2 AM and then headed off to our cabin to sleep. When we woke up in the morning, we were sailing through the calm Baltic waters of Sweden already.

Day 11: Exploring Stockholm (Sweden)

Spent the whole day exploring Stockholm, the capital city of Sweden. Though it was freezing and windy, we had a lovely stroll of 8 km around the waterfront and the old town. We also went to the Nobel Prize Museum and witnessed entire Christmas Market shops being shifted out by cranes from the Stortorget, the central square of Stockholm. We also observed that Stockholm is much more cosmopolitan and international than Helsinki or the other Baltic cities of Vilnius, Riga, and Tallinn. Also, in the center of the old town of Stockholm, almost 70-80% of the souvenir shops (especially the ones selling handicrafts) were hosted by Pakistani shop owners. When we entered a couple of them, we were delighted with their warm reception and hospitality. Upon hearing that we’re from India, they said we’re their neighbors and can’t let us go without having something in their shop. They ordered tea and soft drinks for us alongside putting on Indian music. We wish this relationship stays not only among the Indians and Pakistanis abroad but also within the respective lands of the 2 neighboring countries. Let this be a ‘New Hope’ for the New Year.

Day 12: Driving from Stockholm (Sweden) to Hamburg (Germany)

Drove 1000 km from Stockholm (Sweden) to Hamburg (Germany), crossing over the Baltic Sea via land connection (sea link bridges) at 2 points (the first while entering Denmark from Sweden and another while entering Germany from Denmark) in approximately 12 hours (with breaks) and stopped over in Hamburg for the night. On the way, we touched Copenhagen (Denmark) but didn’t stop there as we had done Copenhagen in one of our previous trips when we traveled to Denmark and Norway.

Day 13: Driving from Hamburg (Germany) to Hoofddorp (Netherlands)

The next morning, we continued our homeward journey for another 500 km in approximately 5 hours (with small breaks) to reach home in Hoofddorp (the Netherlands).

Info, Tips, and Tricks

Choose the right season for visiting these countries.

Before you set out for traveling to any country, the first thing you need to research is the right season to travel. E.g., The Baltics are particularly glamourous during Christmas with decorations all around the cities and the quaint, little, authentic Christmas markets selling unique local merchandize. But on the downside, you have around 4-5 hours of daylight (depending on which Baltic country you are – the further north you go, the shorter the day gets), and extremely cold weather. Whereas during summer (which is just a single month, by the way, 😉), nature can be breathtaking with around 22-23 (!) hours of sunlight. Also, for your information, December is the driest month in the Baltics, and summer is rainy! So set your priorities and decide your moment of travel.

Check for festivals during your travel for traffic and closure of shops

Always remember traveling during the high season (especially during the school holidays) will always have its downsides. The highways will be jammed entirely with vacation goers (and caravans!), hotel prices will be sky high, and on Christmas or New Year, most restaurants (and even public toilets!) might be closed, including the ones at petrol pumps on the highway. So please plan upfront.

Plan for the weather

The upper half of the Baltics can be frigid during the Christmas season (when we were there, Tallinn was -10, and Helsinki was -12 degrees Celsius during the day and went down to -16 during the night). So, dress accordingly and pack a pair of warm boots for your little one/s.

Plan for the budget

Remember, though Balkan and Baltic names sound similar, the expenses might not be. Lithuania and Latvia are still manageable, but Finland and Sweden (though Finland and Sweden are Nordic/Scandinavian countries they are still often referred to as Baltic countries as they’re situated on the Baltic Sea) can be particularly expensive (street parking/parking garage at the center around 7-8 Euros an hour, cost/toll for accessing each of the sea link bridges over the Baltic Sea (while traveling from Sweden to Denmark and Denmark to Germany) around 50 euros approx., 500ml water bottle around 2.5-3.5 euros even in supermarkets and a single piece of chocolate pastry around 8-9 euros). Even Estonia is strikingly expensive compared to Lithuania and Latvia. So, factor that into your planning and book hotels and cruise tickets way in advance (4+ months back) to get the best deals and try dining in local restaurants which serve authentic cuisines and are way cheaper than the more international/continental ones.

Plan for your health

Eastern Europe, the Balkans, and the Baltics are characterized by diverse ecosystems and hence a great range of biodiversity. However, many of the wild flora and fauna can infect you with deadly diseases like Tick-borne Encephalitis or Lyme disease (especially if you’re planning to camp in the woods/mountains). So, discuss the places you plan to visit with your physician before your vacation and take precautions/vaccinations accordingly. However in my opinion, if you stick to the towns/cities, you should be fine without them. Also, please prepare for seasickness if you are taking overnight cruises (especially if you’re sailing through rough waters). Please consult your physician for the appropriate medication that you can carry with you on the trip.

Plan for your itinerary

Planning your daily itinerary can be very challenging, especially on the nitty-gritty that can vary substantially with the season. E.g., The access to the open terrace of the Radisson Blu Skybar in Tallinn (Estonia) is closed during winters (so you can only take pictures from inside through the glass windows), and there’s another Skybar on the adjacent Swissotel on the 30th floor, which’s open only from 17:00 during holidays. Similarly, the Clock Tower of St Olaf’s church in Tallinn (Estonia), which has excellent views overlooking the old town, is also closed during the Christmas season. By the way, an additional info is that, if you really want a good bird’s eye view of the city of Riga, Skybar (don’t confuse with the Skybar of Tallinn, Skybar is present in all major cities of Europe, including all the 3 major Baltic capitals, namely Vilnius, Riga, and Tallinn) indeed is not the best option. Instead, try to access the clock tower (which has an elevator to the top) of St. Peter’s Church. It has hands down one of the best views of a city from any clock tower that I’ve ever climbed to date. And the best part is that the view is 360 degrees and has no iron grills or nets to obstruct your camera lens. So, don’t miss it when you are in Riga.

Plan for your route

When traveling from one country to another, always check the route followed by your GPS. In other words, don’t follow it blindly. E.g., We noted on the way that the TomTom GPS or the Google Maps always tend to take the fastest routes, and those might not necessarily always be land-connected routes. They might direct you towards routes that include a ferry to cross over the Baltic Sea while entering Denmark from Sweden or Germany from Denmark as they might consider them the fastest option (though the land connected route is merely an hour longer than the ferry connected ones since to catch ferries you have to reach early and wait which compensates for the delay over the land connected route). Try to avoid such ferry-dependent routes as over the long journey of 12 hours, it will already be evening (and dark very early at this time of the year), and there’s a possibility that the ferries might not run anymore (also during holidays the ferries run infrequently). So you will be stranded on a dark jetty with no ferries leaving and will have to then go around to find a land connection which will easily be a detour of 2-3 hours that will potentially jeopardize your planning, or else you might have to find yourself a hotel to stopover for the night which will be highly challenging and expensive. However, to avoid such routes, you need prior research, knowledge, planning, and experience to be able to guide the TomTom GPS/Google Maps towards the land connected routes instead of following their advice (as in TomTom GPS, you do not have an option ‘Avoid Waterways’ which could have made the task easier). In other words, you should “Know the way” upfront.

Plan for car insurance

Before hitting the road, ensure that your car is insured in all the countries you are traveling to and if not, get it insured in those countries upfront, as driving a vehicle without insurance is illegal in Europe (both in EU and non-EU countries). However, if you already have a green card for your car, then you should be insured for all these countries by default as they are all members of the European International Green Card System for automobile insurance. But please double-check with your insurance provider. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Plan for the port control checkpoints

Since all the countries we traveled to on this trip are in the EU (European Union), hence none of them had a border control checkpoint on the road. However, there were 2 passport control checkpoints at the Port of Tallinn (before taking the ferry to Helsinki) and another at Port of Helsinki (before taking the cruise to Stockholm). So please keep your passport, visa (or resident permit if you are residing in EU countries or equivalent), driving license, car documents (the physical green card with your car number/license plate on it), car insurance (green paper also called as the green card) handy for verification. Also, please note that the last entry time in the ferries/cruises is roughly 1 hour before the scheduled departure, and you also need to consider a buffer time window of approx 1 hour (max) even before that for the queuing of the cars and the documents verification at port control checkpoints. So effectively, it means you should reach the port terminal 2 hours before the scheduled departure of your ferry/cruise.

Plan for stickers/vignettes for your car

Before traveling by road in any country in Europe, you need to research the stickers/vignettes (equivalent to road tolls or emission certifications) you need to paste on the windscreen of your car before entering that country. Technically if you are caught without stickers, fines can range between 50 and 200 Euros. You can also buy vignettes at the local fuel stations when you enter a country, and you just have to display the bill on your dashboard. However, based on our experience, nobody checks (apart from Switzerland, ask me about it!). Still better to be safe than sorry.

Plan for the fueling

Just before you travel, check the gasoline/diesel cost across countries to decide in which country it’s cost-effective for you to refuel. If you are driving a company lease car and have a fuel card paid by your company (like I have an all Europe Shell Card), research upfront on the Shell Station Locator and plan those fueling stops in your itinerary at regular intervals lest you run out of fuel since Shell does not have many stations across these countries. Also, check upfront on the Shell Station locator if it sells the kind of fuel your car uses, if it’s open 24 hours, if it’s a manned or unmanned pump, etc.

Plan for the cash

Normally, in the Baltic countries, cards are accepted in all major fuel stations, restaurants, and supermarkets (Mainly Mastercard and Maestro, not so much Visa, and NO American Express AT ALL). However, for buying souvenirs or food from Christmas Market stalls, ‘Cash is King’. Also, all these countries apart from Sweden accept Euros, but only in Sweden, they have their own local currency (Swedish Krona). So, withdraw only as much you need for buying souvenirs from Christmas Markets. If you have leftover cash in local currency (Swedish Krona in this case), exhaust them by buying sandwiches/chips/water from a fuel station and stock them in your car (you’ll use them later anyway) before leaving Sweden.

Plan for your communication

Normally, people speak excellent English in Baltic countries (in contrary to the Balkans). So, language should be no bar. But you could sometimes face challenges around asking a local for a landmark (that you don’t know what’s called in the local language) or explaining to the waiter for a food that you’re allergic to. However, you can get around that in 2 ways. Firstly, always keep a printed excel sheet with you containing the most commonly used phrases like “Hello,” “I want to use the toilet” or “I want to drink water,” or food that you need to buy from supermarkets daily like milk, bread or egg or the food that you are allergic to in English vs. the local languages of all the countries you are traveling to. Secondly, always activate your data roaming on your phone before you leave as it’s convenient to Google the landmark where you want to go or the food item you’re allergic to, like mushrooms or shrimps or aubergine, and show the image on your phone screen.

Plan for the check-in/out timings of your accommodation and international time zones

In the Baltics, many hotels/accommodations do not have 24-hour reception, and all have different check-in and out timings (for most of them, check-in starts only after 14:00). So, you need to know it before booking the hotel and let them know your arrival time by calling them on the day of travel when you start driving from your previous location. Also, please account for time changes when you cross the international time zones (like we went ahead by an hour when we drove from Berlin to Vilnius as we crossed the international time zones to enter EET (Eastern European Standard Time) from CET (Central European Standard Time) zone.

So that brings us to the end of our ‘A Baltic and Scandinavian Christmas’ journey. Please let us know in the comments below if you enjoyed reading this article. And until we meet next time, I wish you merry traveling and happy shooting!

Data for the calculator comes from Natural Resources Canada, which publishes fuel efficiency figures for most makes and models of cars sold in Canada. The calculator assumes a combination of city and highway driving for determining fuel efficiency, so costs will be higher if you drive primarily in a city, where fuel efficiency tends to be lower.

7000km across Namibia

7000 km trip

For his 60 th birthday, Iga Motylska took her father on a month-long, 7000 km road trip around Namibia. Their tyre tracks stretched from the Zambezi Region to the Orange River and at times saw them sleeping in the back of his converted Landy.

Text & Photographs Iga Motylska

From the Spring 2023 issue

Bound by sand

Despite what your English high school teacher might have told you, not every story begins at the very beginning. Particularly not this one. This one begins slap-bang in the middle of our month-long, 7000 km, father-daughter road trip across Namibia. It also begins on the side of a gravel road somewhere in Skeleton Coast National Park.

I am squinting into the distance, trying to make out whether that is the Atlantic swimming on the edge of the Earth. It is only later, as we get closer, that I realise it is a misty mirage of ocean air mingling with a dehydrated desert draft to create a condensation swirl that hangs heavy on the horizon.

My father is cranking the car jack. This is the second tyre we are changing in less than a week. And when I say ‘we’, I mean ‘he’ because his MacGyver-like resourcefulness would definitely see him picked first in Survivor . I know the drill by now and prop three large rocks against the remaining tyres. And although I ask a number of times if there is anything I can do to make myself useful, my work here is done. Instead, I resort to looking out for the desert-adapted lions that the sign at the gate warned us about. You would think they’d be easy enough to distinguish against the barren landscape (should they happen to be within our vicinity in the 17 000 km 2 park), but alas, we are not that lucky.

Before you judge me too harshly, he is in charge of navigating and all things car-related, while I have taken the wheel in planning our cross-country trek down to a T, with enough flexibility for spontaneous detours – and the occasional tyre change.

It is tradition that I treat tatuś (the diminutive form of ‘father’ in Polish) – to an annual birthday trip. And the big 6-0 had to surpass our previous trips. Though top of his list, Namibia had always eluded him. We traced an itinerary onto a map a number of times, but somehow responsibilities elbowed their way into reality. For all those times we said we would, but didn’t, this time we went all out.

The plan was to explore as much of Namibia as time would allow. As we hopscotched around the country, we learned fairly early into our trip that distances in Namibia are measured in time rather than kilometres. Our tyre tracks stretched from the Zambezi Region to the Orange River. Our adventure saw us stay in some of the country’s most luxurious lodges, in family-run guesthouses in the-middle-of-nowhere, a hostel and at camp sites in the back of his converted Landy with our supplies   ‘Jenga-ed’ on the roof rack.

7000 km trip

On the road

Tatuś drove his trusty Land Rover Discovery 4 to Namibia from Johannesburg via Botswana, while I flew into Hosea Kutako International Airport from Cape Town. The following days were spent indulging in eco-conscious experiences at Habitas Namibia.

Once rejuvenated, Windhoek was our springboard into the waterscapes of the Zambezi Region. Shortly after our FlyNamibia flight to Katima Mulilo, we floated along sections of the 450-km panhandle amidst wetlands and marshes in search of game and birds. For those few days, life revolved around water, offering a stark contrast to what many believe Namibia to be.

Back in the capital, we made a beeline towards Spitzkoppe’s granite peaks, arch-like Bridge and San rock art – home to the most spectacular camp site location we have stayed at. The White Lady welcomed us to Brandberg and pointed us in the direction of the Organ Pipes and one of the largest collections of petroglyphs in Africa at the Twyfelfontein UNESCO World Heritage Site.

During our stay at Wilderness Desert Rhino Camp in the Palmwag Concession, we had the privilege of tracking the world’s largest population of free-roaming desert-adapted rhinos – alongside members of Save The Rhino Trust, who protect the 25 000 km 2 concession. Next, a photographic safari took us along the Huab River Valley in Damaraland to watch a herd of desert-dwelling elephants saunter towards the next waterpoint.

And that was when our eventful introduction to the Skeleton Coast started. We conjured optical illusions on the salt flats, explored the abandoned mining sites and were humbled by nature’s might at the sight of the remains of countless ill-fated ships.

Then the coastal road spat us out in Namibia’s playground, where our day began with a flight with Hot Air Ballooning Namibia as the sun bathed the Rössing Mountains in morning light. Our days in Swakopmund were filled with sandboarding, fat-tyre e-biking along dune crests and living desert tours in search of lesser-seen critters.

Next, we hopped, skipped and jumped from Walvis Bay to the apple-pie capital of Solitaire and onwards to Namib-Naukluft National Park. Photographs cannot convey the dimensions of the star-shaped dunes at Sossusvlei. It was only as we were standing before them that we wondered how the heck one scrambles to the 360-metre summit of Big Daddy. From atop the world’s highest sand dune, camelthorn skeletons danced with the sun across the white clay of Deadvlei. We bade the day farewell during a 45-minute sunset flight over the desertscape. Without him having to tell me, my father’s highlight was sitting next to the Desert Air pilot in our Cessna 210.

The sky at NamibRand Nature Reserve unfurled to reveal why it is Africa’s first (and one of only two) Dark Sky Nature Reserves. The minimal light pollution in these remote parts make it an enviable location for astro-tourism. It was tatuś who woke before 4 am to witness the lunar eclipse with an astronomer at the nearby &Beyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge in their observatory.

We were told to have our cameras at the ready as the C13 to Aus is said to be one of Namibia’s most scenic roads. Aus spoiled us with multiple sightings of the wild horses of the Namib, though we failed to find any alluvial diamonds at Kolmanskop ghost town. Instead we cheered our wealth of experiences with Lüderitz oysters washed down with a Hansa.

Long after returning to Cape Town, I was still shaking sand from my shoes – a reminder that I took home grains of sand from the world’s oldest desert. They have been fashioned from rock in slow motion, with nature as the artist that has shaped the land into an ever-changing, abstract sculpture.

How to stretch your budget

Book the DBB option: Consider booking a dinner, bed and breakfast (DBB) package, especially in remote areas where dining options are scarce.

Loyalty pays off: When booking multiple stays across the country with the same travel partner, ask about discounts, rewards and loyalty benefits.

Home sweet home: Renting a home on the Atlantic coastline is often more affordable and spacious than a hotel.

The whole package: DMCs offer set or tailor-made itineraries to suit your budget, travel style and interests, often at a more affordable cost than what independent travellers might find.

Rent a car: For groups, renting a car is a cost-effective alternative to taking (or chartering) a flight. A reliable 4×4 with air-conditioning is recommended. Book as soon as your travel plans are confirmed as the limited number of rentals disappear quickly during peak season.

Shuttle: McClunes Shuttle Service runs daily shuttles from Windhoek to Swakopmund and Walvis Bay.

If you don’t have a month?

FlyNamibia has daily Safari Circuit flights that connect Windhoek to Sossusvlei and Etosha National Park, with onward flights from Sossusvlei to Swakopmund. The airline operates weekly flights to Ondangwa, Rundu, Katima Mulilo, Lüderitz and Oranjemund. Domestic and chartered flights depart from Eros Airport in Windhoek.

Driving in Namibia

Resources: The ‘DriveNam’ Facebook Group is an invaluable online community where you can ask about the best, quickest, most picturesque driving routes. It posts updates about border crossings and driving permits.Download the Maps.me smartphone app for offline maps.

Check roads: Gravel roads are tricky to navigate and brakes respond differently to how they do on tarred roads. Before setting off, inquire about road conditions, especially after the seasonal rains. Certain parts of the Zambezi Region may only be accessible by boat during this time.

Avoid driving at night: Outside the main towns, roads are unlit and run through unfenced wildlife corridors, where nocturnal animals roam freely. You also don’t want to break down in ‘the middle of nowhere’ after sundown.

Stick to marked roads: While Namibia’s landscapes may seem desolate and uninhabited, cars damage these delicate ecosystems, hamper rehabilitation efforts and leave scars for hundreds of years. Protect the environment by sticking to marked roads.

Come prepared: Pack spare tyres and repair kits, sufficient drinking water and extra fuel, especially during peak season when remote petrol stations may temporarily run out of fuel. In distant locations petrol stations are few and far between, so it is best to fill your tank and jerry can whenever possible. Some of them only accept cash. Don’t forget to pack your padkos .

Motorcycle Wheelies in front of the Great Pyramid

The guys at Motology Films have produced an amazing promo for an Adventure Travel Film “Motonomad” coming out in 2014.  The Adventure Trip begins in Austria and ends in Egypt covering seven countries and 7000km in 32 days.

Surprisingly the bike of choice for the riders was not an adventure touring bike, but a small dual sport motorcycle the KTM 500 EXC. With limited gas range, lack of places to strap luggage and race tuned engine, the KTM 500 EXC seems like an odd choice.  Coming from an off-road racing background, the guys at Motology Films felt that there was no better bike than the KTM 500 EXC for the rough terrain they would cross.

Adam Riemann said, “[Their sponsor KTM] would have no doubt preferred us to ride one of their bigger adventure bike models, but I’ve been racing KTM’s long enough to know that the 2014 500EXC would be the perfect bike for the terrain we took on.”

In the film, you see the bikes are heavily loaded for the long journey and the riders are carrying large backpacks.  That is because this was an unassisted ride and the riders had to carry all of their spares and camera equipment on the bikes and backs.  They even brought along a RC helicopter for Aerial video footage that looks like it came from a real helicopter.

Surely, this is not the most comfortable way to travel by motorcycle for 7000km. But if you want to go places where other adventure riders turn back, then a light-weight dual sport like the KTM 500 EXC seems like an exciting option.  The guys from Motology Films demonstrate this by pushing through technical desert terrain that would have been impossible on a heavily loaded adventure bike. The KTM 500 EXC seems to be up for the task, as they returned from their adventure with no regrets over their choice of motorcycle.

UPDATE: Over 1000GB of video were captured on this Adventure Trip now transformed into a short film.  DVD is now available at  motologyfilms.com

Kilometers to Miles Conversion Formula

7000 kilometers to miles conversion breakdown and explanation.

7000 km to mi conversion result above is displayed in three different forms: as a decimal (which could be rounded), in scientific notation (scientific form, standard index form or standard form in the United Kingdom) and as a fraction (exact result). Every display form has its own advantages and in different situations particular form is more convenient than another. For example usage of scientific notation when working with big numbers is recommended due to easier reading and comprehension. Usage of fractions is recommended when more precision is needed.

If we want to calculate how many Miles are 7000 Kilometers we have to multiply 7000 by 15625 and divide the product by 25146. So for 7000 we have: (7000 × 15625) ÷ 25146 = 109375000 ÷ 25146 = 4349.5983456613 Miles

So finally 7000 km = 4349.5983456613 mi

Definition: Kilometer

A kilometre (American spelling: kilometer, symbol: km) is a unit of length equal to 1000 metres (from the Greek words khilia = thousand and metro = count/measure). It is approximately equal to 0.621 miles, 1094 yards or 3281 feet.

Definition: Mile

A mile is any of several units of distance, or, in physics terminology, of length. Today, one mile is mainly equal to about 1609 m on land and 1852 m at sea and in the air, but see below for the details. The abbreviation for mile is 'mi'. There are more specific definitions of 'mile' such as the metric mile, statute mile, nautical mile, and survey mile. On this site, we assume that if you only specify 'mile' you want the statute mile.

Speed, Distance & Time Calculator

Use this speed calculator to easily calculate the average speed, distance travelled and the trip duration of a vehicle: car, bus, train, bike, motorcycle, plane etc. Works with miles, feet, kilometers, meters, etc..

    Speed, Distance & Time Calculation

In order to use the above speed, distance & time calculator, or do such math on your own, you will need to know two out of three metrics: speed, distance, time. You will need to convert the metrics to the same time and distance units, e.g. miles, kilometers, meters, yards, feet, and hours, minutes or seconds. For example, if you have speed in mph (miles per hour), time should also be in hours. If you have distance in kilometers, then speed should also be in km/h (kilometers per hour).

The unit of the result will depend on the units you input, but our speed calculator will conveniently display additional units where appropriate.

    Average Speed formula

The formula for average speed, also called average velocity in physics and engineering, is:

where v is the velocity, d is the distance, and t is the time, so you can read it as Speed = Distance / Time . As noted above, make sure you convert the units appropriately first, or use our speed calculator which does that automatically. The resulting unit will depend on the units for both time and distance, so if your input was in miles and hours, the speed will be in mph. If it was in meters and seconds, it will be in m/s (meters per second).

Example: If you took a plane from New York to Los Angeles and the flight was 5 hours of air time, what was the speed of the plane, given that the flight path was 2450 miles? The answer is 2450 / 5 = 490 mph (miles per hour) average speed. If you want the result in km/h, you can convert from miles to km to get 788.58 km/h.

    Distance formula

The formula for distance, if you know time (duration) and the average speed, is:

Example: If a truck travelled at an average speed of 80 km per hour for 4 hours, how many miles did it cover in that time? To find the miles covered, first, calculate 80 * 4 = 320 km, then convert km to miles by dividing by 1.6093 or by using our km to miles converter to get the answer: 198.84 miles.

    Duration (Time) formula

The time, or more precisely, the duration of the trip, can be calculated knowing the distance and the average speed using the formula:

where d is the distance travelled, v is the speed (velocity) and t is the time, so you can read it as Time = Distance / Speed . Make sure you convert the units so both their distance and time components match, or use our trip duration calculator above which will handle conversions automatically. For example, if you have distance in miles and speed in km/h, you will need to convert speed to mph or distance to kilometers. The time unit of the result will match the time unit of the speed measure, so if it is measured in something per hour, the result will be in hours. If it is measured in some unit per second, the result will be in seconds.

Example: If a train can travel 500 miles with an average speed of 50 miles per hour, how long it would take it to complete a 500-mile route? To find the answer, use the formula and substitute the values, resulting in 500 / 50 = 10 hours.

How to calculate the average speed of a car?

Say you travelled a certain distance with a car or another vehicle and you want to calculate what its average speed was. The easiest way to do that would be by using the calculator above, but if you prefer, you can also do the math yourself. Either way, you need to know the distance to a satisfactory approximation, for which you can use a map (e.g. Google Maps) to measure the distance from point to point. Make sure you measure closely to the path you took, and not via a straight line, unless you travelled by air in which case that would be a good approximation. Of course, having a GPS reading of the distance would be more precise. Then you need to know the travel time. Make sure you subtract any rests or stops you made from the total trip duration.

If the total distance travelled was 500 miles and the time it took you was 5 hours, then your average speed was 500 / 5 = 100 miles per hour (mph). If the distance was 300 kilometers and it took you 5 hours to cover it, your speed was 300 / 5 = 60 km/h (kilometers per hour).

Why is INS Vagir submarine carrying out its longest 7,000 km maiden trip to Australia? Know here

The voyage is crucial amid the fact the giant vessel will participate in various exercises with royal australian navy (ran) units on the west coast of australia..

Ajeet Kumar

Notably, the submarine, which is the Indian Navy’s fifth Kalvari class submarine, was commissioned into the Indian Navy in January this year and is based in Mumbai.

Why INS Vagir is travelling 7,000 kms at one go?

The voyage is crucial amid the fact the giant vessel will participate in various exercises with Royal Australian Navy (RAN) units on the West Coast of Australia. Concurrently, on the East coast of Australia, Indian Naval ships and aircraft are involved in Exercise MALABAR 23 from 11-21 Aug 23 and AUSINDEX 23 from 22-24 Aug 23.

During the ongoing deployment, basic, intermediate and advanced-level Anti-Submarine exercises are scheduled. In addition, the RAN submarine and Indian Naval P8i aircraft are scheduled to exercise with INS Vagir. This deployment will further augment the cooperation and synergy between IN and RAN.

The ongoing deployment is a testament to the reach and sustenance of IN submarines. The extended range deployment is the maiden deployment by an IN submarine to Australia and showcases the capability and professional acumen of IN to undertake sustained operations at extended ranges from the base port for prolonged durations. Earlier, during the deployment, INS Vagir had visited Colombo as part of the International Day of Yoga.

Salient features of INS Vagir

Vagir was launched in November 2020, under Project 75 (P75) and was delivered to the Indian Navy on 20 Dec 22 post-completion of sea trials. Vagir has the distinction of having the lowest build time among all indigenously manufactured submarines to date. The  Scorpene  Submarines are extremely potent platforms, they have advanced stealth features and are also equipped with both long-range guided torpedoes as well as anti-ship missiles. These submarines have a state-of-the-art SONAR suite and sensor suite permitting outstanding operational capabilities.

The induction of Vagir is another step towards the Indian Navy, consolidating its position as a builder’s Navy, as also is a reflection of MDL’s capabilities as a premier ship and submarine building yard of the world. Project – 75 also marks a critical milestone in the Yard’s continued importance in the field of Defence Production.

"The commissioning of this indigenous submarine once again denotes the drive and focus towards ‘AatmaNirbhar Bharat," read the statement.

Mystery of missing fruitcake solved after package makes 7,000km trip across Australia

A boy with brown hair sitting behind a fruit cake.

It was meant to take a little over a week in the post, but three-year-old Beau's fruitcake ended up going on a one month, 7,000-kilometre tour of eastern Australia thanks to a recycled box.

Beau's grandmother Tricia Agar said the cake, baked at Wyandra in western Queensland, had been destined for her parents who lived in Oakey, 150 kilometres west of Brisbane, when it was sent in August.

But the parcel, instead of travelling down the Warrego Highway, got bounced between Charleville, Toowoomba, Brisbane and Melbourne.

"After days and days, they couldn't find Oakey in Victoria, so they sent it back to Brisbane and then it sat there for a jolly long time."

Ms Agar said it got sent back to Wyandra before being sent back to Brisbane again and then again to Charleville.

"It's bounced around everywhere; I think it's done well over 7,000 kilometres."

A woman standing in front of handbags.

Local intervention solves puzzle

Despite asking for help from Australia Post, the reason behind the fruit cake's grand tour remained a mystery until an intervention from Ms Agar's local postmaster, Carol.

Ms Agar said Carol noticed an old barcode on the side of the recycled box.

"We're always encouraged to reuse boxes and in my great haste to give it to our mailman at our back door, I hadn't erased the tracking label," Ms Agar said.

"And today, everything being so mechanised as it is, they're not really looking at the labels, the handwritten ones, because that's how I do mine — it just picked up the barcode."

Australia Post said people should remove any old barcodes or address labels when reusing packaging to avoid parcels from being incorrectly scanned.

People should also avoid applying stickers, glitter or clear tape over barcodes as it could be difficult for scanners to pick up.

Delivering services is no cakewalk

Australia Post is currently digitising its services, which will allow it to track down every item in its system.

But University of Sydney Professor of Decision Sciences Ben Fahimnia said with the service making more than 2 million deliveries per day, the odd lost fruit cake was inevitable.

He noted the pressure on the postal service was a lot less than compared to 2021, when orders surged due to COVID lockdowns.

"We expect Australia Post to perform much better this year," he said.

"It's all about the use of artificial intelligence and advanced planning systems; it's going to happen, it's just a matter of time."

But for Ms Agar, it took the intervention of a real person to get her grandson's fruit cake to Oakey, which finally arrived this week.

"We did cook it thinking it might have to do the tours ... it should still be okay."

Bringing your dog? That + food for him will eat up your GVW and take your lift down to 25mm! What is heavy is the water you will want camping in the desert. 9-10 liters a day with minimal washing and food prep + whatever the dog needs. More than the fuel or the food, that will limit how many days you can enjoy out there before you have to find a town or a faucet. A filter isn't a bad addition, not all the free water you find will be that enjoyable to drink. Also, when it does rain, which happens more in October than most of the year for the Moab area, the dirt turns to grease in a heartbeat. If you have winter chains bring them--sometimes going off the road off-roading is not an option. Have a great trip! You picked a great route and a great truck-

5 Rafale jets fly out of France on 7,000 km trip to India, to be refueled mid-air

The rafale aircraft will cover a distance of nearly 7000 kms from france to india with air-to-air refuelling and a single stop en route in uae..

The first batch of five Rafale jets took off from France on Monday and will be arriving in India on Wednesday, when the much-awaited fighter jets will officially be inducted and join the Indian Air Force fleet at the Ambala air base in Haryana.

India ordered 36 Rafale jets from France in a deal worth Rs 59,000 crore in September 2016 as an emergency purchase to arrest the worrying slide in the IAF’s combat capabilities. (Photo @Indian_Embassy)

The Rafale aircraft will cover a distance of nearly 7000 kms from France to India with air-to-air refuelling and a single stop en route in UAE. The Indian Air Force pilots and supporting personnel have been provided full training on aircraft and weapon systems by Dassault.

The Indian embassy in France said the event marked a “new milestone” in strong and growing India-France defence cooperation. The embassy also released a short video titled “Beauty and the Beast”, showcasing Rafale jets ready for take off.

Indian ambassador Jawed Ashraf was there to see off the Rafale aircraft. He also met the Indian pilots and congratulated them on becoming the first ones to fly the world’s most advanced and potent fighter aircraft and wished them success.

Also Watch | Five Rafale jets take off for India, induction likely on Wednesday

“These five Rafale jets are extremely swift, versatile and very deadly aircraft, they’re both beauty and beast. I would like to thank Dassault for delivering aircraft on time and French Government and French Air Force for all the support,” said ambassador Ashraf.

India ordered 36 Rafale jets from France in a deal worth Rs 59,000 crore in September 2016 as an emergency purchase to arrest the worrying slide in the IAF’s combat capabilities.

Acting on a special request by the IAF, France has accelerated the deliveries of Rafale fighters to India --- five jets are coming instead of four that were originally planned to be delivered in the first batch.

France handed over to India its first Rafale fighter during a ceremony attended by defence minister Rajnath Singh and his French counterpart, Florence Parly, in Merignac on October 8 last year.

The delivery of all 36 aircraft will be completed by the end of 2021, said the Indian mission in France.

Maruti Jimny: Likes & Dislikes after a 7000+ km trip to Spiti

car

Power is certainly an issue. Struggled to keep up with the Thars while climbing uphill( we had both petrol and diesel ones in the group)

BHPian jojoinassi recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

3 Jimnys and a trip to Spiti

16 days - over 7000 km -13 states and 3 union territories- multiple expressways, NHs, state highways, bad roads, and no roads, from 33 degrees to minus 17 degrees, from sea level to over 15500 feet, loads of dust to black ice- 4 school mates in 3 Jimnys did it all. It was the trip of a lifetime - finding new friendships, and consolidating old ones

Jimny- the good things

Highways- I was vary of its highway performance. But it did unbelievably well. The cruise was set at 90/100/110/120 according to the roads and it did it with ease. ( This highway thing was the revelation of the trip&#128522

Off the road- most of the roads were good on our trip. But wherever there was a bad patch, the vehicle showed its true colours. Could use 4H,4L, and hill descent effectively whenever needed

Extreme cold- at Kaza temperature had dropped to minus 17 at night. Still the next morning it would start with the first crank without a slight hesitation. One of my phones "froze" in that temperature and is still dead. And we human beings were in at least 5-6 layers of clothing inside the homestays and there she was outside with nothing on ( there was a diesel Thar with us which had some DEF issues and an Isuzu which had some problems)

Fuel average- decent figures of 11.2 km/L for 7337 kms covered. Dropped a bit in the hills. Came back during the return drive

During hill ascent and descent, one could change between D, D with od off,2 & L, and literally drive like a manual. And it worked like a charm

Braking in the hills was not at all an issue even at 13000-15500 feet. Clear instructions were given to all drivers to go downhill in either 2 or D with OD off and avoid unnecessary braking on the go.NO brake fade or no other issues with the braking

The not-so-good things

Power is certainly an issue. Struggled to keep up with the Thars while climbing uphill( we had both petrol and diesel ones in the group). But I felt we were not that bad either

Turning radius- is a problem at sharp bends. But not a deal-breaker

The windscreen washer fluid froze in the mornings. Was back to normal by noon. Someone was telling me to add glycol. Does anyone with any solution?

Even though it was so cold and everything frozen, there was no snow. Would've been far better with snow around

The bad things

Braking at high speeds is a nightmare. The only thing is to be vigilant and try to avoid it as far as possible. Learned to do that these days. And once you've to brake at high speeds, it's not confidence-inspiring at all

Once I took it over some black ice at moderate speeds ( unknowingly) and it was scary

Fuel tank is so small. Frequent visits to fuel bunks were a pain in the wrong place. We used to top it up once it reached halfway mark( in the plains)- it was kind of a forced break after a journey of@ 200 km or 2 - 2 1/2 hours

Overall super happy with Jimny. Very wise purchase. Trustworthy, go-anywhere kind of vehicle (good on the road and off it) with a decent price tag. Hope it'll remain in the stable for long for many such expeditions.

PS- will try to add more as I remember.

Going on a long road-trip in the 500

7000 km trip

  • Add to quote

Hey all, Thinking about packing a toothbrush and driving down to Florida to my girlfriends dad'd place, so it would be a around 6000-7000 km trip in the FIAT, any thoughts? Has anyone gone on a long-haul trip in our little cars? **I am thinking about taking off my X-OST Maranello exhaust and swapping back to stock, so it will be for sale and I may possibly be able to deliver it along the way... Cheers,

Do it i drove from El Paso Texas , to Calgary Alberta, then down to Salt Lake City to the salt flats to Reno Nevada then over to Sacramento where i made my way down the coast to LA then across AZ to Albuquerque and back down to el paso i put around 8000miles on ym Abarth in that one trip. Plus with a bunc of stops in between at various locations.

7000 km trip

I've done 2000 miles/3200km (total for round trip) a time or two in my abarth but haven't gone quite as far as you're planning in on trip No issues other than one punctured tire in Georgia but I used the underseat compressor to fill it up and get to a tire shop for a patch (it was a very slow leak) A 6 speed would certainly be nice but the Fiats are perfectly capable of long trips

7000 km trip

Huh? You did 1200 km's on the highway? That seems like you have a problem. How fast were you driving 130 mph? I get just under 400km with mostly city driving. On my rare longer highway trips I could probably get 700+ kms on a tank of super.

7000 km trip

Give us a shout if you head towards Orlando. There are a several 500's in this area.

BatnBella said: Do it!! You will have a blast! My very first drive in my Sport was bringing her home to Colorado over 760 miles and it was fantastic. But do keep the tank topped off before hitting any desolate stretches...we came within a hair of running out of gas. Not because of bad gas mileage but because stations were few and very far between...fewer and farther than we realized until nearly the last moment, lol. Next long trip was in the Abarth, nearly 2k miles: http://www.fiat500owners.com/forum/25-fiat-500-abarth/6845-bat-bc-mouse-road.html Not sure which direction our next adventure will be (so many choices!) but we will definitely be doing more road trips in the Fiat. Too much fun not to! Click to expand...

7000 km trip

Go for it. A friend and I and my dog did a 2,700 mile run from N Carolina to Bar Harbor. Two days up and drove straight through on the return trip, 1,200 miles in 16 hours. No complaints at all with the car. Will do it again this Fall.

7000 km trip

Grigio500- Florida, during the winter, sounds like a good destination. Weather Channel forecasts a sunny 76° today for Tampa. If your GF's with you in the car, you'll have a lot of nice time to be together. Hope you have a great trip. Although I travel during work, it's not by car, so I haven't had road trip experiences yet. Aside: Asked my Wife if she'd like to come with me to Maryville, TN to spend some time with other Fiat owners on April 5th & 6th. After five seconds of contemplation, she declined. I don't blame her.

7000 km trip

yeah, bring a gas can. I did a cross county trip for F1 last year an ran out of gas twice in 8000 miles.

I have posted somewhere that at 55-57 I can go 500 miles on a tank, if I up that to 72-75 it drops (of coarse) 325ish miles to the tankful. It sure is nice to finally get out of the Rockies lol

As soon as I got my 13 Sport, I took it to Michigan from where I live in N. Ky. Cruised around 85 mph there and back, great fun, no problems. I did pop it up to 125 mph for a short distance and still had lots of pedal left. The manual recommends that you open it up during the break in process, so I did. It's a very solid expressway car that gets great mileage. Normally I would have taken the trip at a slower speed, but I was following someone with a heavy foot!
