Andean Patagonian Adventure (12 Nights) Tour

Andean Patagonian Adventure (12 Nights)

Overall a pretty great experience. There are some long excursions (Torres del Paine) and the weather can be, obviously, unpredictable. But the agency is responsive and friendly. I would recommend taking flights when possible instead of the long bus rides; and I wish we had gotten to spend more time in El Chaltan. But again, overall a great experience!

Patagonia Adventure Tour (15 Nights) Tour

Patagonia Adventure Tour (15 Nights)

Excellent route to visit Argentina under S34 lattitude if there is limited weeks for travelling that huge & fantastic land. The organisation, timing, service and, in case support/returns of agency were excellent. The periods of accomodation at selected points were also perfectly enough to visit all gorgeous places and surrounding national parks. I recommend this itinerary at top.

I got to see all the things I wanted to see but I missed being part of a group. I wish the tour had suggested more things to fill my down time, even suggested walkable restaurants and such. I think it is important to be clear about the difficulty hiking on both sides of the waterfalls of Iguassu - I struggled with mobility.

Treasures of Patagonia

First part of the tour: Los Glacieres Hotel in El Calafate and tour of Perito Moreno Glacier. First of all, the tour guide and bus driver for SayHueque (Sebastien & Daniela) were great. We were picked up as scheduled, the drive was good and safe and Daniela spoke perfect English and gave us detailed information throughout the day. Highly recommend this tour group. The hotel was OK, room mostly clean and comfortable (one of the rooms had a stained bedspread). Breakfast was on the simple side compared to other hotels. Box lunch also very simple. Loved the tour of the Perito Morino Glacier. 2nd part, tour to El Chalten. Did not enjoy the tour company as much. They were nice enough but didn't pick us up in a timely manner. The guide was nice but spoke mostly Spanish on the tour. My husband and I were the only two English people and he barely gave us 5 minutes of instructions. We were supposed to stop at the Park Office for information but they never did stop. The hotel, Pudo Lodge was nice and comfortable. Wifi only available in lobby and still not very good. The box lunch was fabulous. Staff were friendly and helpful. Note that the brochure you have us has some errors in it. We expected a box lunch in El Chalten and had an embarrassing discussion with the hotel about this. It turns out that part of your brochure talks about Torres del Pain and not El Chalten, thus the confusion. I cannot attach the copy of the brochure here but can send it to you if you provide an email address. Overall we were very satisfied with the services of Tourradar and SayHueque. Thank you

What people love about Active Tours in Argentina

A great tour of the key points in Patagonia.
I really enjoyed this independent tour . Very good agents since they assisted me months prior to the tour and daily we would still get a message the night before of the pick up time for th next day . The bus trips are just too lonv so i suggest to take the flights instead . Book all the tours plus add el chalten, mini ttrekking at perito which wasnt in their itinerary. Overall the tour was good
good overall but accommodation and breakfast were below expectation

Food and drink.

Like many other aspects of Argentinian culture, its cuisine has been heavily influenced by European immigration. Mix Spanish and Italian flavors with Argentina's top quality (and affordable!) beef and dairy products, and you have a combination worth jumping on that long-haul flight for. Check our guide on all things food in South America .

It’s important to keep in mind that dinner is eaten late in Argentina. Most restaurants close in the afternoon and do not reopen until 8 pm, though locals typically don't actually begin dinner until 9 or 10 pm.

Here are some must-try dishes and drinks in Argentina:

With Spanish origins, asado describes succulent barbequed meat, slow-cooked on a metal frame over an open fire or a bed of hardwood charcoal. In Argentina, asado is equal parts a dish and a social gathering – both of which you'll want to experience.

2. Provoleta

Soft provolone cheese is grilled in a skillet and topped with oregano, chili flakes or other herbs. A typical asado starter, provoleta is crisp on the outside, warm and gooey on the inside and delicious all around.

3. Chimichurri

A piquant combination of diced garlic, chopped parsley and oregano, olive oil and vinegar, this classic Argentinean condiment is the quintessential accompaniment to grilled meat.

4. Malbec wine

Argentina has one of the world’s most renowned wine regions. Malbecs from the wineries of Mendoza are famous around the world (and happen to pair well with steak), though other provinces also produce quality wines, including Torrontes from Cafayate and Syrahs from San Juan.

5. Alfajores

Argentina’s favorite sweet biscuit. Take two round shortbreads, fill them with dulce de leche (a decadent caramel made from condensed milk) coat them in chocolate... et voila.

Argentineans take ice cream seriously. Don't miss helado de dulce de leche, the national flavor of Argentina.

7. Dulce de leche

Condensed milk is slowly reduced and sweetened to create a thick, sticky caramel. Find it in alfajores (a crumbly biscuit sandwich filled with dulce de leche), dessert empanadas, drizzled on ice cream or just eat it by the spoonful!

8. Yerba maté

This is Argentina's national drink. A caffeine-rich concoction of chopped and dried yerba maté is prepared in a gourd (maté) and drunk through a silver straw (bombilla). It's rich in antioxidants and polyphenols and has long been used by Indigenous people in South America.

Culture and customs

Argentinian culture and customs are influenced by the waves of European immigration that landed here in the 1880s and during the two World Wars. As a result of immigration, parts of the country feel notably more ‘European’ than other areas of South America.

Argentinians are famously affectionate, loud, passionate about football, and big fans of a good plate of homemade spaghetti. They have strong ties with family and friends, and the major religion is Catholicism.

As a general guide, these are some key things you should know about Argentina:

1. A kiss on the cheek is the most common way of greeting someone

Particularly a friend, but it’s not uncommon between strangers, especially if being introduced by a mutual friend. This is true whether it’s female on female, female on male or male on male.

2. If you befriend someone, expect hugs

Expect a farewell hug and a greeting hug thereafter. Again, this is true whether it’s female on female, female on male or male on male.

3. Expect to be late

Being late for social or cultural events is almost fashionable in Argentina, but it can be an annoyance for travelers.

4. Siesta time is still common

Siestas are particularly popular in provinces such as Mendoza, San Juan, Salta. Shops may close from 1pm to 4pm and reopen until around 8-9pm.

5. Dinner is late

Dinner with locals can be very late. Having dinner at 9pm, 10pm and 11pm is perfectly normal and accepted in Argentina, but can cause a few rumbling tummies with travelers. The best thing to do is keep some snacks with you and try and fall into the local pattern.

6. Nightlife is well and truly nightlife

Pubs, clubs and events don’t kick off until 1-2am…no kidding!

7. The majority of Argentinians are Catholic

Between 70-80% of the population are Catholic, and you should be respectful when visiting churches, cathedrals and religious events. The dress code at religious sites is quite relaxed and no one will get in trouble for attending mass in t-shirts, shorts and thongs. However, closed shoes and trousers are preferred. Swimwear is a big no-no and it can be very offensive to the locals.

8. Avoid talking about the Falkland Islands War

Talking about the Falkland Islands war still evokes raw emotions amongst Argentinians and it's well-advised not to raise the topic with people you don’t know.

Geography and environment

Bordered by  Chile ,  Bolivia ,  Paraguay ,  Brazil  and  Uruguay , Argentina is South America's second-largest country. With a vast range of natural environments, traveling in Argentina presents a revolving door of terrain and landscapes.

From giant glaciers, gushing waterfalls and snow-topped granite pillars of Patagonia to the green grasslands of the Pampas (not to mention the lofty Andes of the north to the steamy wetlands of the north-east), Argentina contains a wealth of biodiversity.

Chile and Argentina both stake a claim over Patagonia. Check out our guide to help you decide which South American country to visit .

Top 5 tango spots in Argentina

1. confiteria ideal.

Be charmed by the grand building, old waiters and genuine tango classes that this Buenos Aires institution has been producing for more than 100 years. It might be a bit rough around the edges, but authenticity is guaranteed in this historic gem.

2. Barrancas de Belgrano

On the weekends, head to this leafy park at dusk to see unpretentious locals tango as the sun sets. Try out your tango steps, mix and mingle with Argentines and tourists, and enjoy the casual, fun vibe that proliferates under the park's gazebo.

3. Plaza Dorrego

This relaxed San Telmo favorite is a top spot for alfresco people-watching, tango viewing, wine drinking and socializing.

4. La Catedral

For a slice of old Argentina, head to this bewitching warehouse of kitsch where you can learn the art of tango with locals amid walls of old posters and a giant glowing, red heart. Lessons are taught in Spanish, and while the dancers here may not be technically great, their passion and love of tango are unquestionable.

5. Caminito

Purists may dismiss La Boca's showy street performers as 'tacky tangoists', but the colorful streets, flamboyant moves and suave outfits do have a bit of flair and provide quintessential Buenos Aires photo ops.

Experience a tango lesson with professional dancers on our 15 day Premium Chile, Argentina & Brazil trip

Many stores in Argentina allow travelers to shop tax-free. Look for a blue and white ‘Tax Free’ sign in store windows and make sure to ask for a Global Blue refund form when making your purchase. Get this form validated by a customs official at the airport when you're leaving the country (they’ll want to see the item and receipt as well), then take it to the Global Blue refund office to get your money back.

It’s a bit of a lengthy process, but it might be worth the effort depending on how much shopping you do.

Keep in mind that siesta is still common in some parts of Argentina. Many stores will close for a few hours in the afternoon and reopening times can be unpredictable.

Things to buy in Argentina

1. Leather goods

Leather goods are normally top of the shopping list for every traveler – and rightly so! The quality of leather products is excellent and prices can be significantly cheaper than at home. The most popular items are jackets, handbags, shoes, boots and belts. A word of warning though – be wary of cheap imitations!

2. Mate cup set

A popular tourist shop item, cups may be sold on their own with a straw, or as a set with loose-leaf mate as well. Quality and design can vary, so it pays to shop around.

A good bottle of Argentina’s famed Malbec can be bought for less than USD 10.

Festivals and events

Argentinians are a lively bunch and like to party. Below are four of the biggest festivals of the year.

1. Buenos Aires Tango Festival - August

Passion oozes from Buenos Aires’ streets as tango fills the city each August. Open-air milongas (dances), film screenings, dance classes and competitions featuring world-class dancers are all part of this sizzling two-week event.

2. Fiesta de la Vendimia (Grape Harvest Festival) - March

This week-long celebration kicks off Mendoza’s grape-picking season, and it's a barrel of fun! The festival features parades, folkloric events and a grand coronation, as hopefuls vie to be chosen as the new Harvest Queen.

3. Carnaval (or Carnival) - February/March

Huge crowds turn up ready to have a good time for carnival celebrations in cities across Argentina. Like in Brazil, parades are a cacophony of colors, featuring feathered and sequined costumes and elaborate floats. Taking place right before Ash Wednesday, the best parties are in Gualeguay-chu and Corrientes.

4. Dia de la Tradicion (Day of Tradition) - November

Argentina’s beret-clad, nomadic cowboys, otherwise known as gauchos, are something of a national symbol. Each year on November 10th, they are celebrated with horsemanship shows, folk music, dancing, tons of barbequed meat and a big gaucho parade in San Antonio de Areco, the symbolic center of gaucho culture.

Must-see cities in Argentina

1. buenos aires.

Buenos Aires is an elegant metropolis of colorful buildings, charming boulevards and cobbled laneways that lead to huge street murals. This city offers something for everyone from traditional cafe bars to trendy closed-door restaurants, speakeasy bars to tango clubs, and mercados to shopping malls.

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

When is the best time to visit Argentina?

Spanning over 2400 miles from its subtropical north to its subpolar south, the climate in Argentina is as diverse as its landscapes. Summer (December to February) is the best time to visit Patagonia as the weather is mild and hiking trails are accessible.

In contrast, Buenos Aires can be very hot, humid and busy in summer, so autumn (March to May) and spring (September to November) may be better if you don't enjoy the heat or want to ditch the crowds.

Autumn is also a stunning time of year in Patagonia and Mendoza when golden colours dominate the landscape.

Iguazu Falls is spectacular all year, but it's a sight to behold in the wet season from December to March when monsoon rains create even more powerful cascades.

If you want to do an Antarctica cruise from Ushuaia, the world's southernmost city, the season runs from November to March when temperatures rise and sea ice melts enough to enable access for cruise ships.

Do I need a visa to visit Argentina?

Most travelers do not need a visa to enter Argentina. This includes visitors from Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada, the UK, Ireland and most other Western European countries.

Visa-exempt travelers will usually receive an entry stamp valid for 90 days on arrival. Your passport should be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the date of entry into Argentina.

The page is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Is tipping customary in Argentina?

It is customary to tip about 10% at bars and restaurants. Some restaurants will add a ‘cover charge’ to your bill, but a tip is still expected in addition to this.

What is internet access like in Argentina?

Internet is easy to access in cafes, bars, restaurants and hotels in large cities and towns, but it may be limited in rural and remote areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Argentina?

Cell phone coverage is very good in Argentina’s cities, but may not be available in rural and mountainous areas. Ensure global roaming is activated with your service provider before leaving home.

What are the toilets like in Argentina?

Western-style flushable toilets are the norm in Argentina. It’s a good idea to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer, as they are not always provided. Some hotels and restaurants might have signs asking you to not flush toilet paper – the toilets are modern but the plumbing is not and clogs easily.

What will it cost for a...?

Argentina's unit of currency is the Argentine Peso. Here's what you can expect to pay for a:

  • City bus/subway fare = starting at 100 pesos in Buenos Aires
  • Bottle of beer in a bar/club = 644 pesos
  • Bottle of wine in a restaurant = 1,079 pesos
  • Simple lunch (a sandwich and a soft drink) = 1,100 pesos
  • Dinner at a basic restaurant (for 2 people) = 8,000 pesos

Can I drink the tap water in Argentina?

Tap water is safe to drink in Argentina unless otherwise marked. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water and fill a reusable bottle instead.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Argentina?

Major credit cards are widely accepted in Argentina’s large cities and towns, but may not be accepted in small towns and rural areas. Make sure to carry enough cash when visiting these parts in case credit cards are not an option.

What is ATM access like in Argentina?

ATMs are widely available in larger cities but are less common in small villages or rural areas. Make sure you have enough cash before leaving urban areas.

Do I need any vaccinations before visiting Argentina?

Visit your doctor or travel clinic for advice and make sure to schedule vaccinations 4-6 weeks before your departure date, as some require time to become effective.

Is Argentina a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

As a whole, Argentina is a welcoming destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers. In 2010, the country became the first Latin American nation to legalize same-sex marriage and Buenos Aires hosts the largest annual gay pride parade in South America.

A number of hotels, B&Bs, bars and nightclubs catering to the LGBTQIA+ community can be found in Buenos Aires as well. Though parts of the country, particularly smaller towns, are less tolerant. When in doubt, use discretion outside of large cities.

The climate in the north of Argentina is hot (tropical and sub tropical); in the centre the weather is temperate; in the northern highlands, it's dry while the coldest conditions are experienced in the south, in the mountains of Tierra del Fuego.

The trekking season lasts all year round. During winter it's possible to trek in the north, in the jungle and desert areas, and during summer in the south – Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego.

The best time for climbing in the Aconcagua region is from December to March. The weather then is relatively stable, but be warned the weather can still change completely in a matter of hours. The winds can be very strong. Needless to say, on days like that, we stay put. It can also get extremely cold on the upper slopes of the mountain; temperatures can drop to -20°C or lower with the wind chill factor. Warm clothes and a good down jacket are essentials items for the climb.

Mendoza, at 760m, enjoys a Mediterranean style climate in summer, as a result of a rain shadow effect from Aconcagua and other Andean peaks that separate it from the Pacific Ocean and prevailing weather. The region has a consistent supply of water, however, from rivers that are fed by nearby glaciers, and make it well suited to irrigation style farming such as vineyards and olives.

Patagonia’s southern coastal position leaves it exposed to the intense winds that circle the Antarctic land mass. As such, the climate of Patagonia is unpredictable and it is necessary to be well prepared with good quality clothing. The summer season spanning November to March, experiences day time temperatures of between 8-20 degrees Celsius and in the evenings the temperature can easily reach zero. By Andean standards, the Patagonian Mountains are low in altitude, but they capture virtually all the south-west air borne moisture cladding their summits with snow, and leaving the leeward side, the Patagonian plains, in a severe rain shadow. This makes for some very interesting contrasts in the landscapes.

Time in Argentina

Argentina is -3 hours behind UTC/GMT

Spanish (official), Italian, English, German, French, indigenous languages (Mapudungun, Quechua)

Spanish is most definitely the national language, although here it is spoken with several different regional accents, and includes many borrowed words from other languages, in particular Italian. Many different European languages (and dialects/accents within those) can be heard throughout the country, especially Italian, which is still widely spoken in Buenos Aires.

A curious lingua franca called Lunfardo developed in Buenos Aires towards the end of the 19th century, composed of many different languages including Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, German and different African languages. Lunfardo was developed as a common slang language by the city’s criminal underworld, and was then picked up by lower classes, then spread to all classes from the start of the 20th century. The language can often be heard in the lyrics of tango music.

Cowboy boots and dancing shoes

It has become cliché to say that Argentina is as much European as it is Latin; yet to arrive in Buenos Aires and discover this is actually true still surprises. With the Patagonian Andes as its glacial backbone, Argentina is a land of extreme wilderness, while its vast pampas are still home to roaming gauchos – the original South American cowboys. Had enough of the wild? The birthplace of the tango and the world's fifth-largest wine producer has enough high culture to satisfy the most discerning palate, plus a nightlife that'll keep you up early into the morning.

Worldly Adventurer

Vast and, at times, barely inhabited, Argentina is one of the most-visited destinations in South America. Part of its appeal is its vibrant capital city, Buenos Aires, so often disingenuously dubbed the “Paris of South America” but truly Latin in feel.

In the far south, miles upon miles of pampa , windswept grasslands, are inhabited by hardy gauchos and even the occasional Welsh settlement. The backbone of South America that runs along the country’s western edge, the Andes Mountains, are where Argentine Patagonia’s most spectacular national parks lie . Most are filled with immense, egg-blue glaciers that feed into the practically fluorescent waters of ancient lakes, jagged mountains and rare endemic wildlife, with hiking some of the best means of exploring them.

While the country’s stereotypes may leave you with visions of gauchos horseback riding across broad Pampas plains. Or seductive tango dancers locked in sensual embraces and buoyant soccer fans chanting Maradona’s name, the country offers so much more.

GUIDE TO TRAVEL argentina

Best times to travel and other useful information

WHERE & W HEN TO TRAVEL ARGENTINA

Argentina is situated in the Southern Hemisphere. Making its seasons the opposite to those experienced in the Northern Hemisphere. Its summer months are between December and February and the winter runs from June to August.

Argentina’s size means there are a varying degree of the seasons. This very much depends on which region of the country you are taking a trip to. During the winter, Southern Patagonia is covered in snow and frequented by icy winds. This means its a great time to see the glaciers in Patagonia, or take part in winter sports.

The winter time is not the ideal time to visit Patagonia, but it is our favorite time of the year to visit the north of Argentina after the sweltering summer heat subsides.

The center of Argentina is an all year round destination, although the spring and fall are great  times of the year to visit Buenos Aires and Mendoza. If you’re looking to discover Argentina’s wildlife, spring is by far the best time to take a trip to Patagonia’s Atlantic coast to take part in wildlife spotting.

Keep reading our Argentina travel guide to find out all you need to know before your visit to this amazing country.

USEFUL ARGENTINA TRAVEL INFORMATION

This section will help you with planning your trip to Argentina. We’re giving you a general idea of the regions and what areas may be of interest. As well as informing you about visas, and other great information worth considering when preparing for your journey to this country.

Travel documents Argentina Travel Guide

PASSPORT & VISA

All travelers need a valid passport for at least 90 days after their departure from Argentina. However, we strongly recommend traveling with at least 6 months’ validity on your passport at all times.

If you are a U.S. citizen, we recommend visiting VisaHQ who can help you with a range of expedited passport services. This includes new passport applications, passport renewals, and any required visas.

Argentina also requires that you have sufficient unused pages in your passport, allowing for any necessary stamps upon arrival and departure.

Check with your airline in case you have any connecting flights overseas as part of your journey to Argentina. It may be the case that countries you pass through en route to your destination may require a separate transit visa.

FAMILY TRAVEL IN ARGENTINA

Taking the family to Argentina? It’s the family vacation of a lifetime. Take in incredible sights such as Iguazú Falls, the Perito Moreno Glacier or a southern right whale in Puerto Madryn. These are bound to make a lasting impression.

Within the towns and cities, there are plenty of parks and tree-lined town squares to enjoy. While Argentina’s stunning national parks will dazzle your kids with everything from mighty glaciers and mountains to mesmerizing waterfalls.

If your kids love cowboys, they’re in for a treat in Argentina. They’ll be able to spot Gauchos strolling through the cities or riding their way through the Pampas, with plenty of chances to join them, especially with a day visit or stay at a traditional estancia.

Involving the family in nature, you’ll all be able to enjoy spotting walrus, southern right and killer whales, as well as penguins in the south. Plus capybara, giant anteaters, and alligators in the north and east.

CULTURE & LANGUAGE

Argentine Spanish is different from the Spanish spoken in other Spanish speaking countries, with the most notable difference being with the use of ‘vos’ instead of ‘tu’ in the second person.

Argentinians also have different pronunciations with ‘ll’ and ‘y’ becoming ‘sh’. The differences to the Spanish spoken in Argentina are not so significant that if you already speak some Spanish, communicating won’t be a problem.

Argentina is home to more languages than just Spanish, divided into two groups. The first group includes indigenous languages spoken in different regions of the country such as Mapuche, Quechua, Toba, and Guarani. The second group consists of the languages spoken by immigrants such as Welsh in Puerto Madryn and German in Bariloche.

Many of the immigrant groups continue to converse in their language to keep their culture alive. French, Polish and Russian can also be heard along with large communities of Koreans, Chinese and Iranians in Argentina.

FOOD SCENE & DINING

All meals in Argentina start later in the day than in the United States. Usually, lunch is served around 2 pm or later and dinner is served around 9 pm. Buenos Aires is a city that takes dining seriously, and meals can easily last for hours.

Argentina is renowned for its steak, and there are several parrilla steakhouses in every Argentine city where you can find asado, barbecued beef, of excellent quality. Pair an asado with a glass of Malbec wine for the ultimate dining delight. You may also consider trying yerba mate with a dish at dinner, as it is the traditional gaucho drink.

You can’t leave Argentina, let alone a meal, without trying their national dessert consisting of dulce de leche , a sweet confection of milk jelly, and the alfajores cookie. Alfajores are cookie sandwiches filled with dulce de leche.

VACCINATIONS & HEALTH

No vaccinations are required to visit Argentina, but please review the US Center for Disease Control & Prevention Recommendations . Make sure you are up-to-date on routine vaccines before every trip. These vaccines include the MMR vaccine, DTP vaccine, varicella (chickenpox), polio, and your yearly flu shot.

Travelers do not need yellow fever inoculations for many countries in South America . However, sometimes they are required if you travel from one endemic country to another.

For example, if you travel to Brazil you do not need a vaccination, however, if traveling to Bolivia and then on to Brazil, it IS required. In this instance, if you don’t have a certificate, you will not be allowed to enter the country.

Argentina does not have yellow fever so you can travel from Argentina to Brazil or vice versa without the certificate/vaccination. Visit your doctor or travel clinic for advice and make sure to schedule vaccinations 4-6 weeks before your departure date, as some require time to become effective.

MONEY & CURRENCY

Argentina’s official currency is the Peso and the exchange rate as of 2020 is approximately ARS $72.00 to USD $1.00 (for up to date exchange rates go to XE Currency Converter ). Make sure to bring cash with you in US Dollars as they can be easily exchanged throughout Argentina.

Visa, Mastercard, Diners Club, and American Express are all accepted within Argentina, although Visa is by far the most widely accepted. You may have difficulties with changing your traveler’s checks outside of Buenos Aires.

You shouldn’t have any problems using larger bills – unless you are buying a small amount and try to use an ARS $500 or ARS $1000 bill, especially in smaller stores such as kiosks. They might not accept it as they may not have enough change to give back to you.

Aerolineas Argentinas Travel Guide Argentina

GETTING AROUND

From Argentina’s northernmost point to the End of the World in Ushuaia, Argentina stretches over 2,268 miles and 889 miles from east to west and is just slightly less than 1/3 the size of the USA. If you want to see all of Argentina’s highlights, the distances you’ll need to travel are pretty vast.

We recommend travelers to take internal flights to save time and not endure long road trips. However, Argentina’s long-distance bus services are incredibly comfortable, and a 20+ hour bus journey is not as painful or uncomfortable as it sounds.

The long-distance buses have different levels of comfort, and there isn’t much difference between a ‘comfort’ seat and a fully horizontal bed with waiter service included. In some regions of Argentina, hiring a car to drive through the stunning landscapes is the best way to get around. This is especially true in the northeast and the Lake District in Patagonia.

Brazil Travel Guide adaptors

ELECTRICITY

Argentina recently switched its plugs and outlets to Type I (diagonal flat prongs). The neutral and line wires are reversed from those found in various countries such as Australia. You may need to take a plug adapter with you (changes your appliance plug and allows it to fit into the outlet) or a voltage converter.

Before plugging anything into the outlet, double-check the voltage of your appliance to make sure that it is compatible. Travelers from North America can generally use a plug adapter with their devices such as laptops as they usually run between 120-220V. Therefore they won’t need a voltage converter.

However, this is not always true for other appliances which may not work at 220V such as hair dryers.

A Guide to Adventure Tours in Argentina

Argentina is a little piece of paradise for those who want to experience real adventure in a country full of possibilities. From vibrant waterfalls to sandy deserts, you may not even realize the possibilities of your adventures in Argentina, but one thing is certain: each day will be completely different from the next. If you really dare to take a walk on the wild side and experience Argentina, try a tour through the dangerous Perito Moreno Glacier in Patagonia, explore the world’s most beautiful waterfalls, Iguazú Falls, or live surrounded by monkeys in the deep Misionera rainforest. Overcome your own boundaries through adventure travel in Argentina!

Every single person who travels to Argentina will feel truly fascinated by Argentina’s architecture, nature, and culture. Travelers will simply fall in love with the immense color they’ll instantly be immersed in at first glance, no matter where they choose to travel to. However, the following are some of the most popular adventure destinations in Argentina:

Getting lost in Bariloche is something that everybody has to experience at least once in their life. Those who love all things water can get immersed in some kind of perfect dream sailing through the crystal-clear water of Rio Manso, located in a wild but accessible rainforest surrounded by snowy mountains. Maybe you’d prefer to discover what this wonderland has to offer by participating in the world famous trekking routes of the pristine and untouched Nahuel Huapi National Park, while discovering indigenous plant species. Why not explore the region by air? You can try experiencing the canopy through the aerial bridges between platforms built in trees, or even parapenting for those adrenaline lovers!

If you’ve ever thought about rescuing monkeys in the middle of a rainforest, or making an expedition through a volcano, adventures in Cordoba are waiting for you. Champaquí and Los Gigantes are the highest mountains in the province, made for those trainee climbers who want to exceed their own goals. If you want to keep close to nature’s heart, you can explore within the Sierras Chicas and the adjacent Punilla Valley, or admire the majestic condors and eagles that habit in the Sierras Grandes. Cordoba is known by many as La Docta , because of its many universities, but it is also one of the youngest and liveliest cities in South America. No matter how long you spend in Cordoba, once you’re there you’ll never want to leave!

Maybe you would like to sail through the wild sea while discovering unique worldwide Argentinian landscapes, such as Mar del Plata . You can camp near Laguna de los Padres lake, and expect your days to be full of numerous possible activities, including bird watching, fishing, water sports, biking, hiking, and rock climbing. Don’t leave this enchanting region before exploring its wilderness, from dunes to towering cliffs!

Do you dare to hike the tallest mountain in the Western hemisphere? Located in Mendoza , Aconcagua mountain is challenging for any adventure seeker, standing 6962 metres tall. An outdoor lover's paradise, travelers in Mendoza can enjoy the gorgeous views of the Andes or see stunning natural sights, such as the Puente del Inca , a rock bridge over the Vacas River. World renown for its wineries, travelers also have the privilege of drinking la créme de la créme of wines while learning everything about it from the best masters.

Adventure Travel in Argentina

If you look up into the bright blue sky in Argentina, you can see snow mountains, glaciers, lakes, rainforests, and waterfalls all together in the same landscape, which then lead to a wide range of possibilities and limitless adventures. Argentina is the epitome of an adventure paradise, surrounded by colorful, vibrant, and charming towns dressed in gold at sunset.

From nature tours through wild waterfalls to mountaineering through snow-capped mountain peaks and glaciers, adventure in Argentina doesn’t end. Because of the astonishing beauty of its mountains, hiking and trekking are the most popular and thrilling adventure activities in Argentina. The ideal trekking season is from December to March, because most of the mountain refuges are open between November and April. During the early months, it usually snows on the highest peaks, so travelers should come prepared with the appropriate equipment. Experiencing the natural beauty of Argentina is a good choice during the whole year, but is better to avoid in the winter unless you’re planning an adventure in Argentina that includes snow and low temperatures.

For water lovers, the majestic feel of Argentinian rivers, waterfalls, and lakes fits like a glove. One day you can be canoeing through a calm lake in Bariloche, and the next you could be in Patagonia kayaking and fighting against the brave water of a river, which is born in a roaring waterfall and dies in the Atlantic Ocean.

Argentina is commonly hailed as an extremely cheap destination. A two liter bottle of Coke could cost around 30 pesos, and a burger, just 90 pesos. In addition, an Argentinian empanada sells for around 8 to 15 pesos, so it is a compulsory meal for those who are planning to taste real, affordable Argentinian food. Of course, it would be a crime if it wasn’t accompanied by some elegant local wine, which can be bought starting at 30 pesos, and will always exceed your expectations.

Cheap meals can be found in every city in Argentina, and you don’t have to win the lottery to taste one of their worldwide famous parrilladas. They are sold in cheap neighborhoods where you can try them for less than what you would pay for a burger in the States, so don’t leave Argentina without spending a leisurely afternoon beside the warmth of a grill or open fire!

Surprisingly, the most popular transport for long distance travels in Argentina is bus, even though this way of transport could be slower than rail or air travel. The main reason is because of the quality and comfort of Argentinian buses. Making a long distance trip by bus could be a real pleasure, and there are plenty of possibilities for you to choose from. You can choose a “near-bed” service, which allows the passenger a full night’s sleep, and saves money for the accommodation in the destination. In addition, this is the cheapest way of transport, because there aren’t too many low-cost airlines in Argentina and the train infrastructure is a bit limited.

Accommodation & Visas

Friendship, hospitality, and loyalty are highly regarded Argentinian values; they care for foreigners as if they were part of their family, offering them the best quality accommodation possible for an affordable rate

All kinds of prices and types of accommodations can be found in Argentina. Hotel prices have crept up because of inflation in recent years, but there is still a high standard of accommodation available for decent prices. However, the ideal, and very affordable, way to experience the natural beauty of Argentina is by backpacking , staying in a homestay , or staying at a rural lodge at the top of a majestic mountain.

For those planning to travel in Argentina for more than 90 days, you can enter the country on a tourist visa, which you can get at the airport (depending on where you come from, this could be necessary or not). If you want to stay longer (you will), you will need to invest in a student or work visa. Check out GoAbroad’s Embassy Directory to research more specifics of your visa requirements.

Benefits & Challenges

The best part of adventure travel in Argentina is that adventure seekers could easily live each day as a new, completely different adventure . One day you could be climbing the most beautiful mountain you could ever imagine, and the next you could be sailing through a waterfall surrounded by penguins.

A possible challenge you will have to face during your adventure in Argentina is the appealing yet unique Argentinian accent . For those who don’t know the language very well, it can be a bit challenging to get used to, but nothing impossible and you will eventually fall in love with its melody!

Do you dare to live the Argentinian dream? As Argentinians say, they are the way they want to be, and don’t need anything else, Se Gardel ! Do whatever you have been dreaming about. Argentina is definitely a piece of heaven on Earth for adventure seekers, so summon your inner strength and stamina, and look for unique adventures in Argentina.

Have you ever met someone who has walked alongside penguins or contemplated the beauty of the Iguazu Falls from an helicopter? Probably not, but how cool would it be if that person was you? Throw away all your fears and get ready to live the best adventure of your life in Argentina!

Argentina: your guide to adventure

Sep 18, 2019 • 8 min read

adventure travel argentina

Argentina's landscape is a playground for those looking for unforgettable adventures © Olga Danylenko / Shutterstock

The very word ‘ Argentina ’ evokes passion and extremes – think tango, Maradona, Eva Peron – but it is only as you stand among some of the world’s most shapely and forbidding mountains, or teeter at the roaring edge of Iguazú Falls , that you realise the extremes here are natural.

A woman in a yellow jacket, grey wool hat and blue backpack sits on a rock and looks up to the awe-inspiring jagged ridges and peaks of Mount Fitzroy.

The highest peak outside of the Himalayas rises in Argentina, not far from a vast expanse of flat, outback-like pampas the size of neighbouring  Chile . The world’s largest waterfall system thunders through rainforest, and glaciers crackle around the ankles of the Andes – almost 50 of them in one national park alone.

There are Argentine towns that are part of the lexicon of world adventuring – El Chaltén ,  Mendoza , Bariloche – and peaks that stir anxiety in even the boldest mountaineers.

The Andes form a serrated barrier along the country’s entire western border – all 5000km of it. These peaks are shaped by some of the world’s fiercest weather, with both the Roaring Forties and Furious Fifties slicing through the country. It’s in the Andes that you’ll find several lifetimes’ worth of Southern Hemisphere summer adventure opportunities beckoning: trekking, mountaineering, white-water rafting… even land sailing.

A diver takes a picture of himself next to a huge southern right whale that is swimming along the bottom of the ocean; the head of the whale is encrusted with barnacles.

Fancy diving off the southernmost continental tip in the world? Ushuaia has a number of great dive sites, including plenty of shipwrecks and swirling kelp forests through the Beagle Channel – needless to say, drysuits are the order of the day. At Punta Loma on Península Valdés, there’s a great diving (or snorkelling) experience among a sea lion colony. For something very different, head to Bariloche to dive in the alpine Nahuel Huapi Lake, 760m above sea level. In the gin-clear waters you’ll spot trout and explore an underwater museum of submerged log sculptures around Isla de las Gallinas.

Whitewater paddling

Rivers run like veins from the Andes, creating a wealth of whitewater opportunities. Mendoza is one of the best rafting bases, with commercial trips running on four rivers, including the famed Atuel and the class IV Mendoza and Diamante rivers. For paddlers, Patagonia does what Patagonia generally does: provides masterful scenery that almost eclipses the activity itself. The milky, forestwrapped waters of the Río Hua Hum (San Martín de los Andes) and the boulder-strewn Río Corcovado (Esquel) are especially beautiful.

A cyclist, with bike laden with bags, cycles along a bending road beneath multi-coloured mountains.

Cycle touring

The roads of Argentina are a playground for the cyclist willing to explore, but for a truly memorable experience here let the ripio (dirt roads) guide you. Steer away from the tourist hotspots of the south, and head instead to the lesser frequented northeast regions of Catamarca, La Rioja and Mendoza. Pushed for time? Dive right in at the deep end with a one-day off-road adventure on the old road from Londres to Tinogasta. Here, you’ll pedal through dusty Wild West-esque landscapes: past flowering cacti, up long-forgotten switchbacks and along precarious ledges, which boast a stomach churning 1700m drop to the valley floor.

If you find yourself near the city of Mendoza, take the rough and ready Route 13 to Uspallata. Expect a tough slog and steep inclines to make the highpoint at 3200m above sea level. But the rewards on offer for such a challenging ride are plenty: swooping condors, snow-capped peaks, sublime sunsets and the remarkable ‘hill of seven colours’, just outside Uspallata.

Also not to be missed is a ride from the city of  Salta to the vineyard mecca of Cafayate , via Cachi. The paved Route 33 winds steadily up to Piedra Del Molino pass at 3348m, before taking on a whistlestop tour through the multicoloured mountains of Parque Nacional Los Cardones . Then it’s on to the lunar landscapes of the Valles Calchaquíes, and (at last) a nice glass of vino tinto in Cafayate.

A mountain biker takes a break from cycling atop a ridge; he stares to a distant snow-capped volcano.

Mountain biking

Strangely, given the landscape, mountain biking remains fairly undeveloped in Argentina, with little dedicated singletrack, yet MTB legend Hans Rey rated a ride from Tilcara to Calilegua, in the country’s northwest, among his top three adventure rides in the world. Bariloche, the thriving heart of Argentina’s Lake District, is arguably the most established area, with a summertime mountain-bike park among the ski fields of Cerro Catedral; in 2016 it hosted a round of the Enduro World Series . Expect loose, dusty riding.

Windsurfing & kitesurfing

Wind is the driving force again at the well-named Dique Cuesta del Viento, or ‘slope of the wind reservoir’. Set in a curious desert landscape – it gets rain just a handful of days each year – the reservoir is considered one of the premier windsurfing and kitesurfing destinations in South America, if not the world. Mornings here are deceptively calm (grab a sleep-in), but in the afternoon the winds are as reliable as clocks, particularly from October to early May. The reservoir is beside the town of Rodeo, 200km north of San Juan city.

A person land sails across an empty lakebed, with blue skies above.

Land sailing

When a lake has no water, your sailboat isn’t going anywhere... unless it has wheels, of course. Across the clay surface of Pampa El Leoncito, 25km from the town of Barreal, carrovelismo, or land sailing, is big, with ‘wind cars’ recording speeds in excess of 100km/h across the smooth, 13km-long lake bed. Andean mountains tower to almost 7000m beyond the lakeshores, and the reliable evening  ‘conchabado’ winds can reach up to 80km/h, thus providing ample propulsion. Take a tandem joyride with a guide, or work your way up to driving your own single-seater.

A runner ascends a rocky knoll, which slopes sharply down to a stunning lake; its shores are flanked by silhouetted, tree-covered sections of land, with mountains in the distance.

Trail running

Hard mountains serve up hard events, and Argentina is home to a couple of arduous ultramarathons. The Patagonia Run , held in April, has seven distances, ranging from 10km to 145km, sending runners out from the town of San Martín de los Andes through the stunning Andean scenes of Argentina’s Lake District . It’s a qualifying race for the Ultra-Trail du Mont Blanc and the Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run.

At about the same time, also keep an eye out for  The North Face Endurance Challenge . Involving distances up to 80km, it’s held at changing locations, including Bariloche, San Martín de los Andes and Córdoba.

San Martín de los Andes is also the setting for La Mision, a four-day, three-night self-sufficient trekking event. It’s less a race than a personal journey, ‘to finish is to win’ is its motto, taking participants through 160km or 200km of epic Andean terrain and sleeping wherever they decide to throw down their tent.

A female rock climber, wearing a harness, stands on a bushy slope and looks down over a valley; jagged, snow-covered slopes and glaciers tower in the distance.

Mountaineering & climbing

El Chaltén is a true mountaineers’ town, but the prize peaks here – Monte Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre – beckon only the hardiest climbers. The finger-like Cerro Torre is considered one of the world’s toughest climbs, with a history shrouded in controversy and mystery – it wasn’t climbed until 1959, 1970 or 1974, depending upon which account you believe.

If, as is almost certain, these two mighty peaks are beyond you, 2248m Cerro Solo might appeal. Climbing from Laguna Torre, it’s a straightforward mountaineering ascent, including some glacier travel, to a peak that sits eye-to-eye with Cerro Torre and Fitz Roy – the views can be sublime.

A couple wearing backpacks look at map laid out on a large boulder while trekking in the Andes; In the background is a jagged ridge with snow in the gullies.

With Andean mountain tops forming a 5000km spine along its shapely back, Argentina is perfect trekking country, and the best things happen at the pointy end.

A couple stand with their backs to the camera and look over a parched landscape and up to the highest summits of Los Glaciers National Park.

Not for nothing is this place synonymous with adventure – here banshee winds, glaciers, cruel winters, frost and rain have carved an extraordinary and brutal landscape. The most famous trek in the land, the Torres del Paine , may be just across the border in Chile, but hike out from El Chaltén into Parque Nacional Los Glaciares and you might wonder how it could be topped.

Treks here lead up to Laguna de los Tres , a stunning lake pooled at the foot of the mighty Monte Fitz Roy, one of the world’s pin-up mountains, its enormous and distinctive summit rock towering more than 2km above the water. Hop one valley south and there’s a trekking route up to  Laguna Torre and the Mirador Maestri, a vantage point that peers across glaciers to the needlepoint summit of Cerro Torre.

You might also like this: 10 things to do in Patagonia

The most committing trek is a circuit of Monte Fitz Roy, traversing the Patagonian Ice Cap, the world’s largest icefield outside Antarctica and Greenland. Hikers typically cross the range at Paso Marconi before snowshoeing or cramponing along the ice cap behind Monte Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre, returning towards El Chaltén over the Viedma Glacier and Paso del Viento.

Rounded, treeless summits tower above the forests and lakes within Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi.

The Lake District

The region around Bariloche offers equally good trekking, including a traverse of around four or five days through the spectacular Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi , where you can expect to see Andean condors and craggy peaks above, and wind-pruned lenga forest and alpine lakes below.

The nearby Volcán Lanin towers over the northern Lake District, rising directly from a low plain to a height of 3776m. From most places, its heavily glaciated peak looks impenetrable, but a trekking route up the eastern slopes provides a strenuous (but not technical) course to an exhilarating summit.

A pair of trekkers walk towards a lake long a dirt track; the shore of the lake is covered in golden grass and is backed by evergreen forests. In the distance are tree covered mountains.

Tierra del Fuego

In Argentina’s deep south, a hop-off point for Antarctica , hikers can venture up into the rugged Fuegian Andes, which arc around the world’s southernmost city, Ushuaia . Conditions are so harsh here that vegetation stops growing at around 600m, and unmarked routes provide a sense of remote exploration in keeping with the setting.

Further north, rising above Mendoza, Aconcagua (6962m) is the world’s highest mountain outside the Himalayas and it straddles the divide between trekking and mountaineering. The ascent of the peak, which is the second highest of the world’s Seven Summits, usually requires a commitment of about two weeks. It isn’t technical, but should not be underestimated as it has the mountaineering-style complications of extreme altitude and fiercely fickle weather changes. The most popular approach to the mountain is the Northwest Route through Plaza de Mulas, but the longer, more scenic and more technical approach is along the Valles Vacas and the Polish Glacier.

Unsurprisingly, there are many great places to rock climb across this craggy country. Frey, on the granite spires of Cerro Catedral, above the climbers’ haunt of Refugio Frey, is considered by many to be the finest climbing area in South America . The bulk of the climbs are graded around 5.9 to 5.12, and stretch up to 10 pitches. Rivalling Frey is Los Gigantes, about 80km west of Córdoba . The mountains here aren’t high – up to about 2300m – but there are plenty of limestone crags and up to 100 (mostly) sport routes. As a bonus, you’ll probably get to climb with Andean condors cruising overhead.

Argentine Pesos

When to visit: Buenos Aires blossoms in spring, from September to November. The Lake District explodes with colour in autumn when the temperatures are comfortable and the crowds are thin. Patagonia's climate best suits a summer visit.

Known as the “Paris of the Americas” and the birthplace of the tango, Buenos Aires is a city of contrasts. The glamour and elegance of its European roots are interwoven with its undeniable Latin American essence.

Iguazu Falls

The spectacular Iguazu Falls is one of the great natural wonders of the world. On the Argentine side there is a network of trails that lead to different viewpoints of the 275 waterfalls that make up the Falls, including the biggest, the magnificent Devil’s Throat.

Not only Argentina’s wine capital but one of the great wine capitals of the world. Mendoza is positioned at the foot of the Andes Mountains and is a bustling city boasting a distinctly European feel.

El Calafate

A small town set on the edge of Lake Argentino, where the Santa Cruz plateau meets the Andes, El Calafate is the gateway to Los Glaciares National Park.

Stretching across the Andes of Northern Patagonia, the Argentine Lakes District is known for its emerald forests, snow-capped peaks, glacier-fed lakes and meandering rivers. On the shores of Lago Nahuel Huapi lies the town of Bariloche, the main gateway to the region.

Founded in 1582, Salta still retains its Spanish heritage and is distinctive from the rest of Argentina. It's the gateway to the spectacular northwest region of Argentina.

Tipping is customary in restaurants, bars and cafes, usually around 10% of the bill if you're happy with the service received. Leaving no tip when feeling dissatisfied is not uncommon, and the reason is understood. Many restaurants also levy a small fixed cover charge. Tips are also common for hotel staff, delivery people, hotel and bus porters and taxi drivers . It is customary to tip the ushers in theatres and opera houses if they hand out programmes. For Spa services, it is customary to tip 15% of the bill.

Getting around

Distances are immense in Argentina, and you are likely to spend a considerable portion of your budget on travel. Ground transport (mostly bus) is best for giving a true impression of the scale of the country and for appreciating the landscape. However, you may want to cover some big areas, particularly to and around Patagonia, in which case travelling by domestic flights can often save a day or more. Train services are run-down and limited and not generally a viable method of getting around.

Spanish is the official language of Argentina, however the dialect spoken differs from that in Spain and has a strong Italian influence.

Official travel advice is available by visiting the  SmartTraveller Website

Argentines are on the whole open, blunt, and direct, yet are able to remain tactful and diplomatic. They are a warm people and their unreservedness brings to the fore their passion and sentimentality. In addition they are close communicators physically so will often touch each other when speaking and maintain little physical distance between speakers. If you are invited to an Argentine home, dress well, and arrive 30 minutes later that invited as arriving on time is not the norm. Call you hosts the following day to thank them. If you are given a gift in Argentina, make sure you open it immediately. Pouring wine in Argentina has many rituals and taboos so try to avoid doing this.
