Actor Tom Cruise is the star of several box-office hits, including Risky Business , A Few Good Men , The Firm , Jerry Maguire , and the Mission: Impossible franchise.

Who Is Tom Cruise?

Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, better known as Tom Cruise, was born on July 3, 1962, in Syracuse, New York, to Mary and Thomas Mapother. Cruise's mother was an amateur actress and schoolteacher, and his father was an electrical engineer. His family moved around a great deal when Cruise was a child to accommodate his father's career.

Cruise's parents divorced when he was 11, and the children moved with their mother to Louisville, Kentucky, and then to Glen Ridge, New Jersey, after she remarried. Like his mother and three sisters, Cruise suffered from dyslexia, which made academic success difficult for him. He excelled in athletics, however, and considered pursuing a career in professional wrestling until a knee injury sidelined him during high school.

At age 14, Cruise enrolled in a Franciscan seminary with thoughts of becoming a priest, but he left after a year. When he was 16, a teacher encouraged him to participate in the school's production of the musical Guys and Dolls . After Cruise won the lead of Nathan Detroit, he found himself surprisingly at home on the stage, and a career was born.

'Taps,' 'The Outsiders'

Cruise set a 10-year deadline for himself in which to build an acting career. He left school and moved to New York City, struggling through audition after audition before landing an appearance in 1981's Endless Love , starring Brooke Shields. Around this same time, he snagged a small role in the military school drama Taps (1981), co-starring Sean Penn .

His role in Taps was upgraded after director Harold Becker saw Cruise's potential, and his performance caught the attention of a number of critics and filmmakers. In 1983, Cruise appeared in Francis Ford Coppola 's The Outsiders , which also starred Emilio Estevez , Matt Dillon and Rob Lowe —all prominent members of a group of young actors the entertainment press dubbed the "Brat Pack." The film was not well received, but it allowed Cruise to work with an acclaimed director on a high-profile project.

'Risky Business'

His next film, Risky Business (1983), grossed $65 million. It also made Cruise a highly recognizable actor — thanks in no small part to a memorable scene of the young star dancing in his underwear.

In 1986, after a two-year hiatus, the budding actor released the big-budget fantasy film Legend , which did poorly at the box office. That same year, however, Cruise's A-list status was confirmed with the release of Top Gun , which co-starred Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards and Meg Ryan . The testosterone-fueled action-romance, set against the backdrop of an elite naval flight school, became the highest-grossing film of 1986.

'The Color of Money,' 'Rain Man' and 'Born on the Fourth of July'

Cruise followed the tremendous success of Top Gun with a string of both critically acclaimed and commercially successful films. He first starred in The Color of Money (1986) with co-star Paul Newman , and then went on to work with Dustin Hoffman on Rain Man (1988). Cruise's next role, as Vietnam veteran Ron Kovic in the biopic Born on the Fourth of July (1989), earned him an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe for Best Actor.

'A Few Good Men,' 'The Firm' and 'Interview with a Vampire'

In 1992, Cruise proved once more that he could hold his own opposite a screen legend when he co-starred with Jack Nicholson in the military courtroom drama A Few Good Men . The film grossed more than $15 million its first weekend and earned Cruise a Golden Globe nomination. He continued to demonstrate his success as a leading man with The Firm (1993) and Interview with a Vampire (1994), which co-starred Brad Pitt.

'Mission: Impossible,' 'Jerry McGuire'

Next, Cruise hit the big screen with two huge hits—the $64 million blockbuster Mission: Impossible (1996), which the star also produced, and the highly acclaimed Jerry McGuire (1996), directed by Cameron Crowe. For the latter, Cruise earned a second Academy Award nomination and Golden Globe for Best Actor.

'Eyes Wide Shut,' 'Magnolia'

Cruise and then-wife Kidman spent much of 1997 and 1998 in England shooting Eyes Wide Shut , an erotic thriller that would be director Stanley Kubrick 's final film. The movie came out in the summer of 1999 to mixed reviews, but that year Cruise enjoyed greater success with the release of Magnolia . His performance as a self-confident sex guru in the ensemble film earned him another Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

'Vanilla Sky,' 'The Last Samurai'

Cruise then starred in the long-awaited smash hit Mission: Impossible 2 in 2000, alongside Anthony Hopkins , Thandie Newton and Ving Rhames. In 2002, he starred in Vanilla Sky , his second collaboration with Crowe, as well as Steven Spielberg 's Minority Report . The following year, Cruise traveled to Australia to shoot the $100 million war epic The Last Samurai, which earned him another Golden Globe nomination.

'War of the Worlds'

Cruise proved he remained a top draw by starring in the Spielberg-directed remake of the science-fiction classic War of the Worlds (2005), which grossed more than $230 million at the box office.

His next effort, Mission: Impossible 3 (2006), also scored well with audiences. However, Cruise was faced with a professional setback in August when Paramount Pictures ended its 14-year relationship with the actor. The company's chairman cited Cruise's erratic behavior and controversial views as the reason for the split, though industry experts noted that Paramount more likely ended the partnership over Cruise's high earnings from the Mission: Impossible franchise.

Cruise quickly rebounded and on November 2, 2006, he announced his new partnership with film executive Paula Wagner and the United Artists film studio. Their first production as a team, the political drama Lions for Lambs (2007), proved a commercial disappointment despite a strong cast that included Meryl Streep and Robert Redford .

'Tropic Thunder'

Taking a break from weighty material, Cruise delighted audiences with his performance in the comedy Tropic Thunder (2008). Despite his relatively small role in a movie that featured Robert Downey Jr. and Ben Stiller , Cruise stood out by obscuring his trademark good looks to play a balding, obese movie studio executive.

'Valkyrie,' 'Rock of Ages'

In December 2008, Cruise released his second project through United Artists. The film, Valkyrie , was a World War II drama about a plot to assassinate German leader Adolf Hitler . Cruise starred as a German army officer who became involved in the conspiracy.

Cruise returned to one of his most popular franchises in 2011 with Mission: Impossible—Ghost Protocol . Breaking into new territory, he then starred in the 2012 musical Rock of Ages . Although Cruise received some positive reviews for his performance as a rock star, the movie failed to attract much of an audience.

'Jack Reacher,' 'Edge of Tomorrow'

Returning to his mainstream action roots, Cruise starred in the 2012 crime drama Jack Reacher , based on a book by Lee Child. He then headlined a pair of science-fiction adventures, Oblivion (2013) and Edge of Tomorrow (2014). Showing no signs of slowing down, the veteran actor in 2015 delivered his usual high-energy performance for the fifth installment of his blockbuster franchise, Mission: Impossible—Rogue Nation .

Latest Movies and Familiar Franchises

In 2016, Cruise reprised the role of Jack Reacher for Never Go Back . He then headlined a reboot of The Mummy (2017), which performed respectably at the box office but was savaged by critics, before earning better reviews later that year for the crime thriller American Made .

2018 brought a return to familiar territory for Cruise, who starred in Mission Impossible —Fallout that summer. Prior to its release, he tweeted a photo to mark day 1 of production on the long-awaited sequel Top Gun: Maverick , scheduled for a June 2020 release.

Scientology and Personal Life

Cruise married actress Mimi Rogers in 1987. It was through Rogers that the actor became a student of Scientology, the religion founded by writer L. Ron Hubbard. Cruise credited the church with curing his dyslexia, and he soon became one of its leading proponents. However, while his spiritual life flourished, his marriage to Rogers ended in 1990. That same year, Cruise made the racecar drama Days of Thunder alongside Kidman. Though the movie was unpopular among critics and fans alike, the two lead actors had real chemistry. On Christmas Eve 1990, after a brief courtship, Cruise and Kidman married in Telluride, Colorado.

Divorce from Kidman

For much of the 1990s, Cruise and Kidman found themselves fiercely defending the happiness and legitimacy of their marriage. They filed two different lawsuits against tabloid publications for stories they considered libelous. In each case, the couple received a published retraction and apology, along with a large monetary settlement which they donated to charity. The couple has two children, Isabella and Connor.

On February 5, 2001, Cruise and Kidman announced their separation after 11 years of marriage. The couple cited the difficulties involved with two acting careers and the amount of time spent apart while working. Following the divorce, Cruise briefly dated his Vanilla Sky co-star Penelope Cruz , followed by a much-publicized relationship with actress Katie Holmes. A month after his ties to Holmes became public, Cruise professed his love for the actress in a now-famous appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, during which he jumped on Winfrey's sofa, shouting "Yes!"

Marriage to Katie Holmes

In June 2005, after a two-month courtship, Cruise proposed to Holmes in a restaurant at the top of the Eiffel tower. In October, they announced that they were expecting their first child together. The hasty proposal and surprise pregnancy quickly became tabloid gossip. But Cruise made even bigger headlines that year as an outspoken advocate for Scientology. He openly criticized former co-star Brooke Shields for using anti-depressants during her recovery from postpartum depression. He also denounced psychiatry and modern medicine, claiming Scientology held the key to true healing. Cruise's statements led to a heated argument with news anchor Matt Lauer on The Today Show in June 2005, for which Cruise later apologized.

In 2006, Cruise and Holmes welcomed daughter Suri into the world. That year, they were married in an Italian castle, with celebrities Will Smith , Jada Pinkett Smith , Jennifer Lopez and Victoria and David Beckham among those in attendance. However, the storybook romance wouldn't last, and in June 2012, the couple announced their separation.

Racing superstar  Lewis Hamilton is opening up about the time he passed on an opportunity to work with Tom Cruise that he still regrets today.

I said, ‘Dude, if you ever do  Top Gun 2 , I will even be a janitor,’” Hamilton recalled telling Cruise at the time. “’Just let me be in it.'”

Once the sequel started pre-production, the F1 driver said the Mission: Impossible star remembered his request and put Hamilton in contact with director Joseph Kosinski , who ended up offering the racer a role as one of the film’s pilots.

However, due to his busy schedule, including the 2018 title race, as well as his lack of acting experience, Hamilton said he ultimately passed on the opportunity. But he later regretted his decision once he saw the 2022 action film starring Cruise, Miles Teller and Glen Powell.

“Firstly, I hadn’t even had, like, an acting lesson,” he told the magazine. “And I don’t want to be the one that lets this movie down. And then secondly, I just really didn’t have the time to dedicate to it. I remember having to tell Joe and Tom — and it broke my heart. And then I regretted it, naturally, when they show me the movie and it’s: It could’ve been me! Oh, God, I’m still….”

Though the Top Gun sequel didn’t end up being the F1 star’s door into Hollywood, another opportunity to work with Kosinski came shortly after. Hamilton signed on to produce the director’s upcoming Formula 1 movie starring Brad Pitt to help make sure the film includes an accurate representation of the international racing league.

Why Tom Cruise is One of the Most Dedicated Actors in Hollywood

Tom Cruise is an A-list actor in Hollywood and among the highest grossing box office movie stars of all time.

Tom Cruise is one of the best action movie stars, who has been thriving in Hollywood for more than 35 years. At 59, Cruise is not showing any signs of slowing down. His first movie in the business as a leading man was in Risky Business in 1983, and after 39 years, Tom Cruise has earned his first $1 billion box office achievement , thanks to Top Gun: Maverick . Cruise has redefined what it means to be a star in Hollywood, and we are going to look at how he built himself as a juggernaut that has outlasted his peers.

Tom Cruise is the Product

At the core, Cruise runs his career as a business, and he knows that he is the product. Cruise has mixed serendipity with control over how he runs his career to produce successful box office movies. He understands how to manage his roles, body, money, and publicity so that he can stay relevant and at the top of his game. In addition, he has been flexible to change with the trends in Hollywood, so that he can steer himself in the right direction.

If you look at all Tom Cruise's movies, you will notice that it is his show; the film is like his advertisement platform. He is the performer, product, and even brand ambassador for his movies. To ensure that he expresses himself in the best way possible, Cruise has always relied on working with top directors. Typically, a director is the author of the film, but in Tom Cruise films, directors are more like brand managers who are meant to help position the product for success. But that is not all, Cruise engineered a system to ensure that his product always reaps the benefits.

In 1993, Cruise set up a film production company known as Cruise/Wagner Productions, together with Paula Wagner, his former talent agent. This was a clever move, because Cruise wanted to have more creative freedom in his film projects. Ever since the company’s inception, the company has generated $2.9 billion over 30 years. In the company’s first movie, Mission: Impossible , Cruise made sure that he banked a large chunk of the money through favorable terms in the contract. In the end, Cruise walked away with 22% of the gross revenue, which translated to $70 million. This structure made him rich, and provided him with more latitude over other projects in the future.

High Profile Stuntman

From his younger days, Cruise was always brewing that daredevil spirit that makes him perform stunts, like clinging to an airborne aircraft or running across the tops of tall buildings. At the age of 12, he bought his first motorcycle and that was the beginning of countless crashes. So, when he discovered acting, it was the perfect channel for him to pursue his ambitions and adventurous spirit to the max. That is how he began pouring his passion and soul into becoming the biggest action hero in the movie business.

We have already established that Tom Cruise is a businessman and an actor. And that is why it is easy to see why he insists on performing his stunts. Tom Cruise loves to entertain his audience, and he sees performing stunts as the gateway to enthralling them. During the filming of Mission Impossible 2 , producers bluffed insurance companies so that Cruise could go ahead and perform his stunts. Even movie critics attest to the significance of his stunts as one of the reasons for the success of Mission Impossible 3 , after he performed wild stunts at the top of the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa. It’s hard to believe that Cruise, who seems to be nearing retirement, is still performing stunts in every mission in Mission Impossible movies , which are now things his fans always look forward to in new releases.

A great example of Cruise’s jaw-dropping stunts is in the movie Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation , where he swims underwater without any breathing equipment. The scene, which was shot in one take, was possible because Cruise was able to hold his breath for six minutes, thanks to the advanced breathing technique taught in the military. For Cruise to successfully pull out the stunt in the film, he had to undergo months of training. According to the trainers , Cruise always pushed himself during training to surpass the targets set by the crew. For an average person, it may take years of training to accomplish such a feat, but since it's Tom Cruise, he crushed it in record time.

According to the New York Post , Wade Eastwood, a stunt coordinator, reported, “He stomps his feet and fights for it and tells [the studio] that basically if they don’t [let him do his stunts], he’s not going to do the movie.” For Cruise to perform crazy stunts, he regularly conditions his body. Part of it is due to his exercise routine and rigorous diet plan. It is public knowledge that Cruise takes nutrition tips and training from sports stars like David Beckham. Once you pair it up with his good looks, you have a recipe for a movie star. A good number of his past co-stars, like Simon Pegg, acknowledge his dedication to dietary discipline and physical training. Other stars also fancy training with him, because workout routines are synonymous with becoming a true icon in show business. It's hard to say when Cruise will hang his boots and sail to the sunset. But one thing is for sure, Tom Cruise will still be in this game for a while.

Screen Rant

Tom cruise's personal mission to save hollywood perfectly reflected in new mission impossible.

With the rise of artificial intelligence's influence in Hollywood being protested by actors and writers, Tom Cruise's latest film shares a common foe.

WARNING: The following contains SPOILERS for Mission: Impossible 7. Tom Cruise's personal mission to be the savior of Hollywood is reflected perfectly in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One . In the new blockbuster movie and seventh installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise, Ethan Hunt tries to save the world from an advanced AI called the Entity that possesses enough knowledge and power to allow anyone who can harness its control of the world. This fight against artificial intelligence also happens to be a huge problem currently facing Hollywood, which aligns with Tom Cruise's dedication to saving the traditional movie-going experience at theaters around the world.

The dual SAG and WGA strike that began on July 14, 2023 emphasizes the imminent threat that artificial intelligence has on the entertainment industry. Producers and executives at prominent studios such as Warner Bros. and Universal have begun implementing advanced technologies and new policies that allow them to digitally use actors' likenesses without authorization, which ignited the first Screen Actors Guild strike in 23 years. The Writers Guild has already been on strike since early May 2023, with similar concerns about the threat of screenplays being generated by artificial intelligence that would essentially eliminate the significance of all Hollywood writers.

Tom Cruise Has Been On A Personal Mission To Save Hollywood For The Last 3 Years

Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic began, Cruise has been on a mission to save Hollywood and preserve the traditional theatrical experience. The massive box-office success of Top Gun: Maverick which generated $1.49 billion in 2022 was the launching pad for Cruise's efforts to revitalize interest in going to the movies. Cruise has increased his commitment to performing death-defying stunts to maintain movie theater appeal in ways that no other major Hollywood actor has done in recent memory. At 61 years old, Cruise's risk-taking abilities have gotten more intense and daring all in an effort to save the diminishing glamour and influence of Hollywood.

The announcement of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two which is scheduled for a summer 2024 release is further evidence of Cruise's single-handed effort to save a sinking Hollywood. These plans could change with the current SAG strike, which has halted production on the eighth installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise for the time being. Despite Cruise's commitment to maintaining his status as Hollywood's modern savior, he too will be forced to wait out the full duration of the strike before the actor has an opportunity to lead the charge at the summer box office once again.

Mission: Impossible 7's AI Villain Reflects A New Threat To Tom Cruise & Hollywood

In Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One , the threat that Ethan faces from incoming artificial intelligence arrives at the same time that Hollywood is struggling to figure out how to use AI properly. The looming threats of Hollywood being able to theoretically use the likeness of thousands of actors and reuse them throughout various productions without proper compensation or approval sounds like something out of a science-fiction novel. In fact, Black Mirror season 6 strangely debuted with an episode precisely about that issue, which until recently seemed like a completely fictitious cautionary tale that has now become all too real.

According to Variety , Steven Spielberg himself reflected on how Cruise "saved Hollywood's ass" and attested that Top: Gun Maverick might have "saved the entire theatrical industry." With early box-office opening weekend numbers of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One showing an expected No. 1 performance, there is a good possibility that Mission: Impossible 7 will be one of if not the highest-grossing movies of 2023. With the ending of Dead Reckoning Part One positioning Ethan and the Impossible Mission Force team to try and put a permanent end to the implied threat of the Entity, the timing of the SAG strike and the film's release is uncanny at the very least.

Ethan's Responsibility To Save The World Echoes Cruise's Burden To Save Movies

Ethan's devotion to saving the world from the Entity and those who wish to wield its insurmountable power echoes Tom Cruise's commitment to saving movies. Former IMF director Eugene Kittridge tells Ethan at the end of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One that his possession of the key means that he alone can defeat the Entity and save the world. As Hollywood's saving grace, it wouldn't be surprising if Cruise thinks similarly about his ability to save the future of movies. His infamous angry rant on the set of Dead Reckoning Part One at crew members who broke COVIC-19 policies reveals how Cruise actually feels about the significance of his movies in Hollywood, indicating that his personal mission in life is truly not too far from Ethan Hunt's mission in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One .

Why Tom Cruise Changed His Name When He Got To Hollywood

Tom Cruise smiling on the red carpet

Tom Cruise is one of the most prominent actors in the world. His films, including "Top Gun" and the "Mission: Impossible" series, have made him a bankable star in Hollywood. That said, Cruise is worth even more than you probably realized , with a staggering net worth of $600 million. Variety reported that Cruise made $100 million alone from his 2022 hit film "Top Gun: Maverick."

Fame and fortune aside, Cruise is also known for his doomed marriages to fellow actors Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes. Born in 1962, acting was not Cruise's first career choice. As a young teen, Cruise was studying for a surprising job as a Catholic priest. However, after starring in the play "Guys and Dolls" in high school, Cruise was bitten by the acting bug. By the time he was 19, he had signed with an agent. He subsequently nabbed a role in the 1981 film "Endless Love" and later gained notoriety with 1983's "Risky Business," which critics now consider to be a cult classic. A string of successful movies followed, including "Top Gun" and "Rain Man."

But, before he was an A-lister, Cruise went by a longer moniker: His birth name is Thomas Cruise Mapother IV. Early on in his career, he shortened his name. The reason for this? His father was "a merchant of chaos" who would bully his kids, the actor once said (via  Gentleman's Journal ), though Cruise apparently dropped the Mapother name for commercial reasons as well as personal ones.

Tom Cruise's dad was abusive

According to People , an agent suggested that Thomas Cruise Mapother IV change his name to Tom Cruise. Of course, this is nothing new in the entertainment industry. Several stars, including Whoopi Goldberg, Marilyn Monroe, and countless others changed or modified their name before making it big in Hollywood. However, Gentleman's Journal writes that Cruise also decided against using the last name Mapother because he wanted to symbolically cut ties with his father, Thomas Cruise Mapother III.

Per CBS News , Cruise, who is notoriously private, revealed in a 2006 interview with Parade magazine that his father was abusive to him while he was growing up. Cruise told the publication that his father "was a bully and a coward... the kind of person where, if something goes wrong, they kick you. It was a great lesson in my life — how he'd lull you in, make you feel safe, and then, bang!" Cruise's mother, Mary Lee South, divorced him in 1974. Cruise did not see his father again until 1984. By that point, the elder Mapother was on his deathbed.

Cruise explained to Parade that even as he was dying of cancer, his father did not want to discuss "the past." He said, "When I saw him in pain, I thought, 'What a lonely life.' He was in his late 40s. It was sad."

Tom Cruise's actor cousin kept his last name

Tom Cruise may have had a fractured relationship with his father, but he's not the only celebrity in the Mapother family.  His cousin, William Mapother (pictured above), is also an actor. Unlike Cruise, William professionally uses the surname he was born with. He is best known for starring in the 2001 film "In the Bedroom" opposite Marissa Tomei and Sissy Spacek, as well as the hit J.J. Abrams series "Lost," in which he played Dr. Ethan. He has also worked on several of Cruise's films. These include "Born on the Fourth of July" (which was Mapother's first movie), "Magnolia," "Mission: Impossible II," "Vanilla Sky," and "Minority Report."

William prefers to keep a low-key profile and doesn't like discussing his family. In an interview with HuffPost , he was asked what it was like to have Cruise as a cousin. He replied, "That's one question I'm not going to answer — I don't mind you asking — only because whenever I answer questions about my cousin, it ends up getting spun and misinterpreted. Not by you guys, because I know you'll present exactly what I say, but someone else will take out pieces and you know... It's happened too often." He did say that they are "very close" and that Cruise is "a great guy," but he wouldn't be drawn any further on the matter.

Head to head: Tom Cruise and Leonardo DiCaprio

Tom Cruise or Leonardo DiCaprio: who is king of Hollywood?

T here is a story playing out right now in Hollywood that epitomises the perils of fame, the precariousness of success and the dangers of celebrities left unguarded. You can imagine it framed in the blockbuster vernacular, the voiceover delivered in the gravelly, portentous boom that comes as standard in every trailer: "Two men. One dream: to be the king of the multiplexes. But they dared to want more. They dared to want . . . integrity." Then the names and faces of two Hollywood behemoths would flash up on screen. Tom Cruise. Leonardo DiCaprio . Who will prevail?

Barring some dramatic turning of the tide, DiCaprio is now secure in his place as Hollywood's unimpeachable golden boy, while Cruise, the previous incumbent, is in danger of resembling the court jester. On paper, the pair still occupy similar territory. They aren't separated by much more than age (Cruise is 12 years older than DiCaprio) and a few million dollars. With two legitimate recent hits behind him in Shutter Island and Inception, DiCaprio can expect $28m per movie, while Cruise is still able to command $22m a throw. (Forbes magazine notes that "Cruise's career has been rocky lately", but attributes his ongoing fortune to revenue from "a string of older hits that constantly play on TV".) Both men have sought out many of the same directors including Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg; DiCaprio is also close friends with Michael Mann, who cast Cruise in a rare bad-guy role in Collateral.

But it is in the management of their image that the stars begin to diverge. DiCaprio has policed himself efficiently, keeping his life largely private and expressing himself through his work. But with Cruise you never know what you're going to get next; and audiences cannot help but drag the baggage of his off-screen life to the cinema with them, which is the worst possible outcome for any actor.

Two revealing Cruise moments, both screened on British television in the last fortnight, testify to the extent to which his image has been corroded. The first was on BBC2's Top Gear last week. Cruise and Cameron Diaz, his co-star in the very poor shoot-'em-up comedy Knight and Day, consented to be interviewed mere metres away from the great unwashed, or Jeremy Clarkson as it says on his passport. To the casual observer, this appearance represented nothing more than a pair of A-listers unafraid to appear to be slumming it if it means spreading the word about their new movie. But to Cruise-watchers, the Top Gear gig was the latest desperate attempt by the star to rehabilitate a persona that has fallen starkly into disrepair over the last five years. He's trying to be seen as the guy next door whose dental work just happens to cost more than your house.

There have been numerous factors that have driven a wedge between the star and his public, but few of them date back to BC – that is, Before Couch. The notorious "couch-jumping" incident on Oprah Winfrey's chat show in 2005 is where the trouble really began. In the wake of a newspaper poll, which had expressed scepticism about his relationship with the actor Katie Holmes, Cruise sought to demonstrate his love for his then-fiancee (now wife, and mother of his daughter Suri) by leaping up and down on the most sacred couch on US television, and generally causing untold distress to Oprah's upholstery.

That brings us to the second Cruise moment of recent days, when appearing on Alan Carr's talk show, David Walliams professed his love for his own bride by performing a personal take on the Cruise episode. So ingrained is Cruise's Oprah appearance in our collective memory that no explanation was needed.

Watch the original clip again and it is clear that Cruise fully believed himself to be staging a winning display of devotion. What the world saw was something else entirely. "What happened, happened," Cruise told Esquire magazine earlier this year. "Afterward, wild things were being said about me, and once they're in the ether, there's nothing you can do about it. It felt like being the new kid in the schoolyard again and the other kids are whispering and whispering about you and suddenly you hear what they're saying, and you think, 'What? That didn't happen. Look at the reality of the situation.'"

At the same time that Cruise has suffered a steep, nosebleed-inducing depreciation, Leonardo DiCaprio has risen to fill the space vacated by him. DiCaprio has never really belonged to the same species of performer. At 36, he is 12 years younger than Cruise; and whereas the Top Gun pin-up always had his sights set on stardom, DiCaprio was an actor first, and a superstar entirely by accident. (Blame Titanic. He does.) However unconvincing some might find him as a grizzled adult in the likes of Blood Diamond and Shutter Island, there is no mistaking his relief now that he has traded in his pin-up status for a face that looks like it has been around the world a few times, even if just on a student visa.

In his earliest films (This Boy's Life, What's Eating Gilbert Grape?), DiCaprio was as full-blooded and fearless an actor as it was possible to find. He was also a natural. The young Cruise, on the other hand, had the motivation to succeed, but not the dramatic alchemy of a DiCaprio. In Richard T Kelly's oral biography Sean Penn: His Life and Times, Penn recalls some illuminating first impressions of the teenage Cruise when they worked together on the 1981 drama Taps: "This was a guy who was ready for his chance, no question about it. He wouldn't have known that himself – he was second-guessing everything all the time. But that didn't stop him from committing when it was time. Cruise was so . . . like he was training for the fucken Olympics . I think he was the first person I ever said 'Calm down!' to."

Cruise went on to do some nimble comic work as a rich kid out of his depth in the bawdy comedy Risky Business, and had a dignified flirtation with the brat pack in Francis Coppola's The Outsiders, but it was Top Gun in 1986 that both ratified him as a star, and eclipsed his potential as an actor. Not that being a star is easy. But for a long time, that's what Cruise was. Learning to be an actor again in films such as Born on the Fourth of July and Magnolia seemed to demand of him the gruelling development of an extra muscle, whereas the daily grind of celebrity – cranking up the charm, gladhanding fans and smooching babies, manipulating his public persona – came naturally.

It doesn't look so natural now. The more Cruise tries to avert continuing disaster, the more vulnerable he appears. After a series of damaging PR disasters, he is in danger of becoming a laughing stock. Knight and Day was a relative flop on its recent US release, pulling in just over $20m on its opening weekend – a fraction of its $107m budget. It's the lowest gross of any of Cruise's action films since Days of Thunder 20 years ago, and an unambiguous sign either that audiences are growing weary of the star's extravagant confidence, or that his extra-curricular tomfoolery has undermined his formerly palatable on-screen persona.

Meanwhile, DiCaprio is riding high. Christopher Nolan's Inception, in which he plays an "extractor" who enters the dreams of others, has dominated the world box office since its release last month; at the time of writing it has amassed a worldwide total of $363m and shows no sign of waning, with research indicating that audiences are making repeat visits to untangle its mysteries, however threadbare. In a recent Rolling Stone interview, DiCaprio admitted that he hadn't acted in the nine months since completing the film – he simply hasn't found the right project yet. And while he is scheduled to play J Edgar Hoover in a forthcoming biopic directed by Clint Eastwood and scripted by Dustin Lance Black (the Oscar-winning writer of Milk), he doesn't need to lift a finger until he's good and ready.

Cruise, on the other hand, hasn't got a moment to lose. Last month, David Thomson wrote in this paper that Inception was the sort of film that Cruise might have made a decade ago. And while the age difference, and disparity in acting styles, between the two performers means that they can't often have been rivals for the same parts, it's true that Cruise had his shot at Inception-style material with Vanilla Sky (a remake of the Spanish thriller Open Your Eyes) and Minority Report (a philosophical thriller far superior to Inception). But thanks to the decline in his image, he now lacks even the gravitas to solicit an audience's goodwill for an undemanding blockbuster such as Knight and Day.

The couch-jumping incident may have contributed to being dropped by the studio Paramount, which made the Mission: Impossible trilogy, but the general mistrust of Cruise has long been bound up with his vehement promotion of Scientology, L Ron Hubbard's extra-terrestrial-based religion. "As much as we like him personally, we thought it was wrong to renew his deal," said Sumner Redstone, chairman of Paramount's parent company Viacom, when news broke of the studio severing its ties to the star in 2006. "His recent conduct has not been acceptable to Paramount."

That euphemistic phrase "recent conduct" covered not just the couch-jumping but Cruise's messy public spat with Brooke Shields (the star of the 1981 film Endless Love, in which Cruise had an early, supporting role), during which he berated her for fighting post-partum depression with psychiatry and anti-depressants, both bugbears of any card-carrying Scientologist.

He later apologised to his former co-star, but other rapprochements were longer in coming. Shortly after his outburst at Shields, he got into a verbal tussle about Scientology with US television host Matt Lauer on The Today Show. Part of Cruise's delayed damage-limitation campaign in recent times has involved returning to The Today Show to reflect on his behaviour. "I went back, and looked at [the interview]," he told Lauer in December 2008, "and it was interesting . . . I came across as arrogant. . . I didn't communicate it in the way I wanted to communicate it. Also, that's not the way I am. That's not the person I am."

Cruise has since resolved not to discuss Scientology in interviews – "I think there's a time and place for it," he told Lauer – but there is no disentangling him from the subject. In any word-association game, you will invariably find that the words "Tom Cruise" are followed by "Xenu, dictator of the Galactic Confederacy." His PR representatives seem to have been disappointingly slow to realise that, if you're an actor hunting for widespread approval, you don't do Scientology.

Even here, on the subject of public proclamations, DiCaprio has the edge over the older man. Where Cruise has been aggressive and passionate only in his promotion of his chosen religion, DiCaprio reserves his soapbox moments for selfless causes that most of us can get behind – he has campaigned on environmental matters (he co-produced and narrated the environmental documentary 11th Hour), worked with orphaned children in Mozambique, given $1m to relief efforts in Haiti. Cruise couldn't look much worse if he were to speak out against composting, or be snapped in a clinch with Sarah Palin.

Despite all the strikes against him, Cruise still has certain things in his favour. On the plus side, he isn't Mel Gibson. And he has plenty of chums willing to spring to his defence. "He's a friend of mine and I find it very unfair," James Mangold, director of Knight and Day, said recently. "I think there are wildly unrealistic expectations placed upon him. Tom's an intense guy. He's very physical but there's something really funny about him and joyous and also, to be honest, something eccentric about him; how hard-working he is, how intense he is . . . The part of it that is most concerning for me is I just think he's a phenomenal actor and some people deal with him as if he's a lightweight. The reality is that he has delivered some of the best performances in movie history."

The pressing question is how can Cruise recast himself in the public imagination, and can he recover his Hollywood crown? He has tried to kill off his old persona before, notably in Cameron Crowe's film Jerry Maguire, which began with the sports agent played by Cruise undergoing a humiliating sacking. Even Knight and Day seems to acknowledge that the days of the old Tom Cruise are numbered; in his first scene in the movie, he is shown at the controls of an arcade game which tells him: "You're dead."

When he appeared in a cameo role as the monstrous studio boss Len Grossman in Ben Stiller's Tropic Thunder, audiences responded enthusiastically to the spectre of a star renowned for his seriousness ditching his looks and lustre to play an outlandish comic caricature. His recent reprise of the role at the MTV movie awards, where he danced lasciviously in-character with Jennifer Lopez, preceded an announcement that Grossman would get his own spin-off movie. Even those of us who feel that the potential comedy of Cruise as Grossman is undercut by the actor's transparent need to be seen to have a sense of humour would be hard pressed to argue against this strategy.

Simon Pegg, who starred in Mission: Impossible III told me last month that he is rooting for Cruise. "It all started with that couch-jumping thing, didn't it? It just seems so stupid. Having worked with him, I know he's a very friendly and professional guy. I hope people give him a break. I want to see him carry on making movies for a long time to come."

Tom cruise backs striking actors union in surprise appearance during negotiating session, blasts use of ai.

The Hollywood actors’ strike has just got the support of one of its most famous A-listers: Tom Cruise.

The “Top Gun: Maverick” star backed SAG-AFTRA during a surprise appearance at a negotiating session between the actors’ union and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) via Zoom, according to  The Hollywood Reporter .

The 61-year-old reportedly rallied against the takeover of artificial intelligence in a statement now echoed by thousands of actors and entertainers in Hollywood , who are striking with the Writers Guild of America (WGA) for the first time in over six decades.

Cruise hopped on the call in a desperate bid to get the AMPTP to re-evaluate its stance on AI in the TV and film streaming era.

The actor’s latest “Mission: Impossible” movie has ground to a halt as a result of the strike action, as have dozens of other high-profile projects, including the “Avatar” sequel, “Gladiator 2” and “Deadpool 3.”

Tom Cruise recently made a surprise theatre appearance to celebrate "Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One" at AMC Sunset Place 24 on July 11, 2023, in South Miami, Florida.

During the Zoom call, Cruise also addressed the guild’s stance on stunt actors, according to the outlet.

The actor asked the AMPTP to allow performers to continue on with their press tours following the strike, due to the “fragile state of movie theaters” following the pandemic.

He said promoting films is just as “important” to the actors as it is to the studio, the outlet adds.

The union protecting Hollywood’s biggest A-listers on Thursday joined forces with screenwriters on the picket line after voting to shut down production across the entertainment industry, which may result in a drought of shows and movies in the near future.

SAG-AFTRA actors and Writers Guild of America (WGA) writers walk the picket line in front of Paramount Studios in Los Angeles, California, U.S., July 17, 2023.

The SAG-AFTRA unanimously voted to stop working after their contract expired and talks broke off with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which represents streaming giants like Disney, Netflix, Amazon and others.

The strike marks the first time the 160,000-member-strong SAG-AFTRA has walked off film and TV jobs since 1980.

The actor-screenwriter strike is the first joint walkout in more than six decades.

Both SAG-AFTRA and the WGA are demanding a rise in pay and residuals in the streaming era.

Tom Cruise Was Called A 'Control Freak' By Controversial Hollywood Screenwriter

T om Cruise is one of the most popular actors of our time, appearing in dozens of movies since breaking into show business in 1981. Through hits like "Top Gun" and "Jerry Maguire," he quickly became something of a Hollywood golden boy, but that doesn't make him immune to drama. In fact, Cruise has had some major controversies over the years , facing everything from speculation surrounding his relationship with his estranged daughter Suri Cruise to backlash regarding his devotion to Scientology.

While many of his scandals have been forward-facing, other drama has originated from behind the scenes; his former co-star Thandiwe Newton admitted to being 'scared' while working with him  while his ex-manager made brutal claims about what he's really like . In the 2023 book "Last Post," controversial Hollywood screenwriter Frederic Raphael similarly had some choice words about the "Mission Impossible" star, calling him an "egocentric control freak" (per the  Daily Mail ).

Raphael was the screenwriter for the 1999 movie "Eyes Wide Shut," one of the many films that Cruise has starred in alongside his ex-wife Nicole Kidman . Following the movie's production, the writer published a divisive autobiography titled "Eyes Wide Open," which chronicled his experiences collaborating with director Stanley Kubrick on the film. Raphael's controversial depictions of the director were criticized by the family and colleagues of Kubrick, including Tom Cruise himself.

Tom Cruise Criticized Frederic Raphael's Statements About Stanley Kubrick

In addition to writing "Eyes Wide Open" about famed director Stanley Kubrick, Frederic Raphael also wrote an essay in The New Yorker about the memoir. It was this essay that was criticized by Tom Cruise in a 1999 interview with Roger Ebert , with the "Interview with a Vampire" star brutally questioning the screenwriter's motives.

"He wouldn't have written it if Stanley had been alive," Cruise told the outlet. "Opportunistic. Self-serving. Inaccurate. I don't know that man at all and I've never met him." Raphael took issue with the Hollywood star's comments, grouping him with Christiane Harlan, Kubrick's wife, and her brother Jan in what he alleges were attempts to wrongly defame his name as a response to his publication.

"The Harlans and Master Cruise have managed to insert some derogatory stuff in my Wikipedia entry," Raphael wrote, seemingly referring to a reference to Cruise's interview. "'I have never been called a liar by anyone as I have been by the Harlan clan and by Tom Cruise" (per the Daily Mail). Even so, the author alleges that Cruise offered him a job following the movie, something he attributes to the actor's apparent desire for control.

Frederic Raphael Is Just One Of Tom Cruise's Many Critics

While Frederic Raphael accused Tom Cruise of being a "control freak," the screenwriter admitted to never actually having met the Hollywood figure. Even so, he isn't the first one to have commented publicly about Cruise's temper and ego, as a few of those around him have had somewhat similar things to say.

For one, former Scientology member Leah Remini recounted a moment when Cruise blew up at his assistants over cookie dough he couldn't locate, writing about the outburst in her memoir "Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology." Remini told People that the assistants "had the fear of God in them because they knew what was coming," adding, "They are probably still in Florida right now because they disgraced him."

Cruise also appeared to have a meticulous temper in leaked audio published by The Sun , in which he goes off on the crew of "Mission Impossible 7" for failing to effectively follow COVID-19 regulations . With all these negative reports, though, there have been a ton of employees and co-stars who have spoken positively about Cruise.

Hollywood star Tom Cruise has been spotted getting close with a new love interest who is 25 years younger to him.

The ‘Mission Impossible’ actor, 61, has, according to reports in the Daily Mail, been getting close to socialite Elsina Khayrova, 36, who is the daughter of a Russian MP and ex-wife of a successful diamond trading oligarch, reports ‘Mirror.co.uk’.

The couple were seen dancing and getting close at a London Mayfair party, with onlookers describing Tom as ‘besotted’ with his dance partner. Another onlooker described the pair as ‘inseparable’.

As per ‘Mirror.co.uk’, Elsina, a former model, was previously married to Russian tycoon Dmitry Tsetkov with their bitter split hitting headlines in the summer. Yet it seems the model has now found love with ‘Top Gun’ actor Tom, and the feeling appears to be mutual.

A source told Mail Online: “They were inseparable, clearly a couple. He seemed to be besotted with her.”

“He spent most of the night dancing with Ms Khayrova, but at one point, he was just throwing himself around in the middle of a group of women.”

The source added that Tom was asked by party guests for pictures and kept politely declining before the DJ reportedly had to announce that he didn’t want to have photos taken.

Elsina previously shared a $27 million home on the Wentworth estate in Surrey with her ex-husband as well as homes in London.

Tom Cruise split from his Russian socialite girlfriend in order to avoid issues with her outspoken oligarch ex, a source tells Page Six.

Following news that Cruise and Elsina Khayrova were dating , her ex-husband — the colorful international diamond trader, Dmitry Tsvetkov — gave a long interview to the Daily Mail detailing their marriage and warning Cruise to “keep his eyes and wallet wide open.”

A source tells us that the article worried the very private star’s team.

Tom Cruise

“He’s filming and can’t be shooting and have her husband saying stuff every time he is mentioned in the press,” a source told us. “They just didn’t want to deal with the ex husband coming up with something nasty to say every few weeks.”

Tsetkov — who reportedly prefers the term “tycoon” over oligarch — also somewhat unusually continuously fanned over Cruise during the interview, calling him his “favorite actor,” stating he has seen “Eyes Wide Shut” a whopping 30 times (and also loves “Rain Man” and “The Firm”), and added that he talked with a Hollywood producer pal about having Cruise play him in a movie about his life.

“I told the producer that the only actor who could play me is Tom Cruise,” quipped Tsetkov to the UK outlet. “We’re about the same height and weight and I would be honored if that could happen. I couldn’t think of anyone better to play me than Tom. I’m hoping that I’ll be able to meet him one day to discuss this project.”

Cruise has been making headlines as he currently films his eighth “Mission: Impossible” movie. The actor, 61, who known for doing his own stunts, was most recently seen sprinting through London for a scene.

Elsina Khayrova

The Sun reported that Cruise and Khayrova had split in late February with a source telling the outlet, “There are no hard feelings between them and, for Tom, their relationship simply ran its course.”

The wealthy Russian socialite is the daughter of a Vladamir Putin ally, Russian politician Rinat Khayrova.

Tsetkov, who has British citizenship and was reportedly on the Kremlin’s most wanted list in 2020, claims to have survived assassination attempts .

Tom Cruise

In the Daily Mail article, he also said he spent over $12 million on clothes and approximately $2.5 million on handbags for his ex during their 11 year marriage. He also claimed he lost nearly $200 million in the divorce.

Their  split made international headlines  as millions were in dispute, including a mansion in Surrey, England, five London apartments, a Bentley and a Ferrari, plus Cartier jewelry and artwork by Renoir and Chagall.

“Irrespective of whoever she’s with, Tom Cruise or anybody else, they should be aware that she likes the finer things in life and has expensive and luxurious tastes,” he told the publication.

Elsina Khayrova

But we hear that Khayrova, 36, is still hopeful she and Cruise could rekindle their romance. “She didn’t do anything wrong,” says our source.

However, she doesn’t seem to be taking the breakup too badly. She has been Instagramming from the luxe Amara hotel in Cyprus this week.

On Thursday, she posted an image on Instagram Stories of herself saying: “A woman’s energy is reflected in her daily practice of loving, appreciating, and accepting herself, as well as recognizing her own worth,” with a heart emoji.

Elsina Khayrova

In another, a caption read, “Always in love,” with a heart emoji.

Khayrova and Cruise were first spotted together publicly at a party in December in London’s Grosvenor Square, and Page Six exclusively reported that they had met when a friend of Khayrova’s brought her to one of his exclusive Sunday tea parties at his Hyde Park penthouse.

“He has butlers and homemade cakes, and it’s all very British,” said our source at the time.

In June 2022, Page Six  exclusively reported  that Cruise was shopping for apartments in the UK after falling in love with London.
