The UAE and Africa have a long history of successful relations across the entire energy sector value chain

African Energy Week (AEW) 2021, taking place in Cape Town on the 9 th -12 th of November, unites African Ministers, oil and gas executives, and national and international energy companies for four days of networking and dealmaking. Representing the continent’s premier energy event, and the first pan-African event to take place in Africa in 2021, AEW 2021 provides the most suitable platform for a collaborative discussion on Africa’s energy future. Correspondingly, the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company hosted (ADIPEC) forum, taking place on the 15 th -18 th of November 2021, also comprises a platform for the discussion on Africa’s energy landscape, with a dedicated ‘Focus on Africa’ session, led by African energy Ministers, offering up key insight into Africa’s post-pandemic energy outlook.

African energy Ministers including H.E. Gabriel Obiang Lima from Equatorial Guinea; H.E. Jaden Ali Obaid Hassan from Sudan; H.E. Alhaji Sesay of Sierra Leone; H.E. Chief Timipre Sylva from Nigeria;  H.E. Ruth Nankabirwa from Uganda and many others will be traveling from AEW 2021 to ADIPEC for the first international gathering for the global energy sector since COVID-19. After attending AEW 2021 in Cape Town, where a strong discussion will be held on Africa’s energy future.

ADIPEC represents one of the worlds top meeting places for the global energy sector, hosting over 160 conference sessions, showcasing 26 country pavilions, and exhibiting over 2,000 companies. Considered the world’s largest energy event, ADIPEC will gather leaders from the African continent to discuss the Africa’s energy sector challenges, the realities of the energy transition, and unlocking new value opportunities on the continent. Led by African energy Ministers, the spotlight session at ADIPEC will emphasize thought leadership, direction and strategies that will shape the African continent’s response to the challenges of a post-pandemic energy landscape.

“The UAE and Africa have a long history of successful relations across the entire energy sector value chain. Through the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, as well as collaborations regarding Africa’s energy transition, addressing energy poverty and investments, the UAE has emerged as a valuable partner for the continent, working closely with African countries to develop both their economies and energy sectors. At ADIPEC in Abu Dhabi, African representatives will build on these relationships, promoting partnerships and further collaboration between Africa and the UAE. It will be our first discussion after COP26 and African Energy Week in Cape Town”. Stated Gabriel Mbaga Obiang Lima

An event such as ADIPEC is critical as Africa moves to strengthen its position within global energy transition dialogue. After participating in the continent’s premier Africa-focused event in Cape Town, African energy Ministers will take insights and solutions discussed in Cape Town to Abu Dhabi, expanding the conversation on Africa’s energy transition. Both AEW 2021 and ADIPEC firmly believe in the value of collaboration and sectoral integration, and by offering platforms for increased cooperation and partnership among global energy stakeholders, both events’ are committed to driving Africa’s energy transformation in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

AEW 2021, in partnership with South Africa’s Department of Mineral Resources and Energy DMRE, is the AEC’s annual conference, exhibition and networking event. Energizing Africa: What Will It Take to Achieve Universal Energy Access?

April 17, 10 AM ET / 14:00 GMT (Convert to your local time )

  • ABOUT THE EVENT

GO TO:  SPEAKERS

Over half a billion people in Sub-Saharan Africa are at risk of being left behind without electricity access by 2030, with nearly 400 million of them living in countries subject to fragility, conflict, and violence. Africa is where the energy access battle will be won or lost. Without access to reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy, the region will not reach its development aspirations or achieve an economic transformation that can lift millions out of poverty.

Together with partners, the World Bank Group has already begun efforts to deploy innovative financial and technical solutions that are essential for accelerating electrification rates that outpace population growth.

The discussion will focus on what it will take to scale up the solutions and investments that will help connect millions more Africans to electricity and transform African economies.

This Y Combinator Startup Wants To Be Africa’s ‘Backbone of Travel’

Elizabeth Casolo , Skift

April 10th, 2024 at 3:27 PM EDT

Some investors are hesitant to fund startups in places experiencing currency volatility, but Triply overcame that challenge while consolidating payment tools for smaller travel businesses.

Elizabeth Casolo

You finally found the perfect hotel for your upcoming trip. You check the total in U.S. dollars and input your credit card information. Booked. Easy, right?

For travel businesses and travelers in Africa, the experience isn’t always that simple. Triply Co-founder and CEO Peter Wachira said some booking companies do not account for the cultural and economic differences in many African countries.

For example, M-PESA , a popular mobile money service for Kenya, isn’t compatible with some booking platforms. And the Kenyan shilling’s value can have big swings against the U.S. dollar .

Wachira and his co-founder Collins Muthinja needed to consider where travelers in Kenya and other African countries come from: mostly through offline channels and social commerce. With 56% of hospitality expenditure in Africa coming from the countries’ domestic visitors in 2019, travel platforms need to cater to these audiences.

This is where Wachira’s Triply, previously Tripitaca, comes in. Not only does Triply help African travel businesses manage operations, but it also can help domestic travelers. The company’s software combines several features, one being a wallet to collect payments from customers and to pay business expenses. While the wallet can currently only hold Kenyan shillings, Wachira said he hopes to expand the wallet’s currencies going forward.

“Having your funds held in the same currency as you were paid allows you to protect its value in the long run,” Wachira said. This can ease future transactions in that same currency.

Wachira said Triply’s wallet feature can limit scammers and build trust with customers, as well.

Triply also provides a platform to manage tour and accommodation listings. The company generates revenue through commissions, a subscription to use the platform, and payment processing fees.

Getting into gear with Y Combinator

Startup incubator Y Combinator helped thrust companies like Airbnb, Stripe, and DoorDash into the limelight by providing funding and mentorship. The program is competitive, and Triply applied twice before getting accepted. Tom Blomfield, a group partner at Y Combinator, said Triply’s profitability and growth helped it stand out on the third try.

With the volatility of certain currencies in East Africa, some investors are wary of the region, said Blomfield.

“What we’re seeing in these African businesses is they’re having to grow revenue and get to profitability to be self-sufficient,” Blomfield said. “They can’t rely on external venture funding in the same way perhaps an American company could.”

During its Y Combinator Batch, or cycle, Triply secured the organization’s standard $500,000 investment .

“I think what set them up best was their ability to keep growing revenue,” Blomfield said. The challenges ahead of Triply include understanding other African countries’ markets and working with bigger partners in Kenya. Blomfield sees potential for Triply to collaborate with larger hotel chains.

While Y Combinator provides support, Wachira faced logistical challenges as an overseas business in the program.

“You’re spending most nights running things back at home and spending the rest of the day managing going through the (Y Combinator) process,” Wachira said. “I would say it’s really overwhelming, but it’s definitely worth it.”

Triply presented during Y Combinator’s Demo Day on April 3 and April 4. Demo Day allows companies to share their businesses with previous Y Combinator investors.

“You come from a region, and you’re supposed to be the best of the best of companies in that particular region,” Wachira said the next day. “And then you come, and you’re listening to really incredible pitches.”

Despite the competition, Wachira said emails flooded his inbox following Demo Day.

“People are lining up to support you and learn more about what you’re doing,” Wachira said.

Empowering Africa’s travel industry

While the company has roots in Kenya, Wachira aims to establish Triply as “the backbone of travel on the continent.”

“We want it so that (when) you were thinking about travel in Africa, there’s only one platform that you can think of, and that’s Triply,” Wachira said. “Even though you’re not (always) necessarily booking through our marketplace, the payments that you’re making — to an accommodation, to our hotels, to our travel agents — it’s more or less being supported by Triply.”

Covid challenged Africa’s travel industry, but Triply hopes to continue identifying and filling gaps in the market.

“Nothing was getting deployed on the travel side, and so that’s the main reason as to why we’re doing this… to change the narrative to support businesses,” Wachira said. He aspires to “bring to life the true capability of travel on the continent.”

Africa travel restrictions lift paves the way for large-scale energy events

Energy Capital & Power

In an effort to control the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, global measures were implemented to reduce social gatherings and economic activity so as to limit the potential for exposure. Economies took a major hit, and Africa was not exempt.

Now, as the pace of vaccinations increases and positive case numbers dwindle, governments across the continent have eased restrictions, aiming to kickstart an economic recovery post-pandemic.

Easing Restrictions Improves Business

With the easing of regulations including social gatherings, business and travel, Africa is on track to resume economic activity across every sector. Most notably, the easing of travel restrictions is set to spark an influx in business activity across the continent, with travel networks both within Africa and internationally reopening. The introduction and dissemination of a number of COVID-19 vaccinations has made it possible for travel to resume globally, making way for numerous economic benefits in Africa.

Firstly, travel will improve tourism across the continent, improving revenue and industry growth. According to InvestmentMonitor, international tourism inbound receipts in Africa amounted to $24.7 billion in 2019. Tourism expenditure in South Africa alone contributed approximately R209 billion to GDP in 2019 with 773,533 people employed in the formal sector. Secondly, job creation at both a local and international level will see a push as more businesses reopen and economic activity revitalizes. In order to address unemployment in Africa, upwards of 15 million jobs need to be created each year by 2025 in Africa, and the easing of restrictions will play a critical role in making this happen. Finally, new opportunities for Africa’s events industry will be introduced, paving the way for large-scale energy events to not only take place but help drive a post-COVID-19 economic recovery in 2022.

Large-Scale Events Trigger Post-COVID-19 Recovery

As travel restrictions to and throughout Africa become more relaxed, large-scale events have been announced which will be critical for attracting investment, driving development and kickstarting multi-sector growth in 2022 and beyond. The events Organized by the leading investment platform for the African energy sector, Energy Capital & Power (ECP), will unite regional and international stakeholders in key locations across the continent and will be instrumental in triggering economic development on a regional basis.

Notably, in Angola, where the third edition of the Angola Oil & Gas conference will take place from November 29 and 30 to December 1, 2022, passengers arriving and departing from the country are required to show proof of vaccination and a negative PCR COVID-19 results taken up to 72 hours before travel; the national curfew has been lifted; and restaurants, businesses, cultural or art fairs, and media centers are allowed to operate at full capacity.

In Senegal, where the MSGBC Oil, Gas & Power Conference and Exhibition will take place from September 1-2, 2022, international flights are operating for travelers showcasing a negative PCR COVID-19 test result no more than five days before arrival or full vaccination received at least 14 days before the travel date; businesses, restaurants, markets and sporting events can operate at full capacity and public transportation and taxi services may operate at full capacity. Similarly, international travel has reopened to South Sudan, where the fifth edition of the South Sudan Oil & Power Conference & Exhibition will take place from September 13-14, 2022. Turkish Airlines has recently opened a flight route to the east African country, paving the way for new business and travel opportunities between the two countries as well as between South Sudan and international destinations.

Finally, in South Africa, the national state of disaster was officially lifted in April 2022 after 750 days of implementation. With travel, gatherings and business restrictions lifted, the country is set to see a rapid economic recovery on the back of improved economic activity and growth. Driving this recovery, the 2022 edition of African Energy Week (AEW) – taking place from October 18-21 in Cape Town – will be the face of Africa’s resurrected events industry. In 2021, AEW proved that events in Africa can and must take place in a post-COVID-19 context, and in 2022, this will be no different.

As Africa strives for multi-sector development, improved energy access and accelerated economic growth, ECP’s events will be a significant component in the drive towards development. For more information on ECP’s exciting event lineup in 2022, view the event calendar here.

Ingredients for Accelerating Universal Electricity Access: Lessons from Rwanda’s Inspirational Approach

A rural electrification project in Eastern Province, Rwanda.

The goal of lighting up every household is not a dream, but an achievable reality. In a remarkable 15-year journey, Rwanda increased access to electricity to households from 6% in 2009 to 75% as of March 2024. The country has connected 100% of health centers and administrative facilities at the sector level and 84% of schools and most productive users (micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises). This electrification expansion was one of the fastest in the world between 2010 and 2020, ranking 11th globally and 3rd in Africa.

What did it take for Rwanda to achieve this, and what can other countries learn from this experience?

Government ownership, leadership, and commitment to universal electrification. Since 2008, the Government of Rwanda (GoR) has been intentional in engraining electrification targets in its development strategies. The Economic Development and Poverty Reduction Strategy 1 (EDPRS1 2008-2012) set out targets for electricity connections from 70,000 to 200,000 households, and for institutions providing social and administrative services from 50% to 80%. Likewise, both the EDPRS2 (2013-2018), and the National Strategy for Transformation 1 (2017-2024) set a universal electrification target by 2024.

An accountable and dedicated structure. The Electricity Access Rollout Program was set up in 2008 with a mandate to implement the government's spatial least-cost electricity investment program, anchored on an investment prospectus that integrates technical, financial, and implementation planning components. Following the sector reforms in 2013, the energy sector oversight, management, and operation became the primary responsibility of three institutions:

  • Ministry of Infrastructure (MININFRA) for overall policy and strategy of the energy sector and coordination of the development of the electricity sub-sector,
  • Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority to regulate energy resources, and
  • Rwanda Energy Group (REG) which has two subsidiaries: Electricity Utility Corporation Limited for utility operations, and Energy Development Corporation Limited (EDCL) for planning, new energy development activities, and electrification rollout.

In addition, the government adopted policies to support the uptake of off-grid Solar Home Systems (SHS) through the private sector. It also mandated the Development Bank of Rwanda ( BRD ) to support EDCL by providing financial intermediary services through credit lines and results-based financing to scale up the rollout of SHS - recognizing the importance of the dual track of grid and off-grid electrification in speeding up electrification.

For accountability and performance monitoring, REG and EDCL management sign annual performance contracts ( imihigo ), committing to achieving the annual electrification targets.

Institutional strengthening and capacity building . EDCL has developed the capability to achieve electrification targets and continuously introduce flexibility through various rollout mechanisms to accelerate the pace of electrification. It is now self-sufficient in delivering long and short-term least-cost geo-spatial electrification plans, and is using a mix of international engineering, procurement and construction contractors and in-house and locally based contractors for grid extensions and last-mile connections. Additionally, BRD and EDCL have continued to support each other in advancing off-grid electrification, learning from experience, and continuously adapting a mix of strategies to support the private sector, including programs for affordability to fast-track off-grid electrification.

Funding availability and strong partnerships. Electrification rollout is expensive. It, therefore, requires sufficient funding and dependable partners. Concessional financing from development partners is the predominant source of funds for developing countries which, once secured, recipients should deploy efficiently. The GoR has intentionally formed strong partnerships with development partners and other relevant sector stakeholders. In 2008, the government, supported by the World Bank, worked with development partners to design the Energy Sector-Wide Approach (eSWAp). Its main objective is to enable expansion of access to electricity to meet Rwanda’s national targets. Under the eSWAP, the sector involves all relevant stakeholders in implementing the Economic Development and Poverty Reduction Strategy, including decisions related to sector strategies, planning, implementation, monitoring, and mobilizing of resources. A sector working group chaired by the Ministry of Infrastructure and co-chaired by development partners in rotation, comprising all relevant stakeholders, guides the eSWAP.

Since the first financing round table held in 2009, Rwanda has mobilized over $1.4 billion from different development partners for electrification, with approximately $750 million from the World Bank. The GoR provides counter-funds of up to 10% through the utility and is reinjecting beneficiaries' connection fees into the electrification program.

Involvement of the private sector : The GoR has involved the private sector in the rollout of off-grid SHS, connecting 22% of households through SHS. BRD and EDCL have designed funding mechanisms to support the private sector with capital requirements, paying close attention to the evolving realities and challenges and adjusting the program’s implementation in response. A Rwanda-pioneered pro-poor results-based financing program (implemented under the Renewable Energy Fund and the Energy Access and Quality Improvement Project ) has successfully helped address affordability and proved successful in the fast-paced rollout of SHS.

Wholistic reforms . Following the structural energy sector reform in 2013, between 2017 and 2020, the government introduced several policies under the $475 million Rwanda Energy Sector Development Policy Operation to ensure fiscal prudence and sustainable electricity sector and service expansion. The policy changes included tariff reforms, least-cost geo-spatial planning along the electricity supply chain, policies to address affordability constraints, inclusion of off-grid in electrification planning, as well as the efficiency and accountability of the utility. As a result, Rwanda has maintained electricity sector subsidies below 1.4% of GDP while aggressively expanding electrification.

Rwanda's success in increasing access to electricity demonstrates that with the appropriate combination of ingredients, countries can accelerate their efforts to achieve universal electrification and meet Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7) , helping ensure affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy to all.

  • Invest In African Energies: Energy Growth Through An Enabling Environment

african energy travel

  • October 9, 2023
  • African Energy Week

The African Energy Chamber proudly announces the launch of the 2024 edition of the continent’s premier event for the energy sector: African Energy Week: Invest in African Energy, taking place November 4-8 in Cape Town.

At a time when the African energy industry is faced with a variety of challenges, the African Energy Week (AEW) conference serves as a platform for engagement, collaboration and investment. Since the event’s inception, AEW has facilitated deals, fostered dialogue while laid the foundation for long-term and sustainable developments to kick off. As such, the African Energy Chamber (AEC) – organizers of the AEW conference – proudly announces the launch of AEW 2024: Invest in African Energy. Maintaining a commitment to a secure and sustainable energy future in Africa, AEW returns to Cape Town from November 4-8 under a mandate to make energy poverty history by 2030.

AEW 2024: Invest in African Energy takes place at the Cape Town International Convention Center and will once again connect a strong slate of African Presidents, Ministers and policymakers with both regional and foreign investors. Covering the entire energy value chain, AEW 2024: Invest in African Energy represents the platform of choice for Africa’s energy industry.

AEW is all about investing in African energy and there is a reason why the event has become the premier event to sign deals in Africa. The event features the participation of the highest number of African energy and petroleum ministers and is opened by African Presidents. National oil companies from across the continent lead discussions while international energy and technology firms come to sign deals and partner. The event unites African stakeholders with global authorities, with energy heavyweights from the Middle East, Europe and Asia using AEW as a platform to engage with and invest in African opportunities.

AEW also showcases the most innovative and forward-looking businesses, projects and solutions through the event’s exhibition while various panel discussions, presentations, investor-focused sessions and meetings provide stakeholders with the insight they need to make informed investment decisions across the continent. AEW 2024: Invest in African Energy continues this drive, connecting players from across the African and global industry in Cape Town to unlock a future of security and sustainability in Africa.

In a relatively short period of time, AEW has not only emerged as the largest gathering of energy stakeholders on the continent but a fresh, innovative platform where the future of Africa’s energy sector can be forged. Integrating the entire energy sector and its value chain while uniting African and foreign energy leaders, AEW has and will continue to move with the times, prioritizing Africa’s energy security needs alongside sustainable transition. Under efforts to increase investment in every segment of the African energy value chain and associated industries, AEW will continue to offer a comprehensive and diverse program catered to investors from the oil and gas, renewable energy, power and infrastructure, technology and local content arenas.

“AEW was established with a mission to make energy poverty history by 2030. Centered on an integrated approach to development, this important gathering of African and global stakeholders highlights the challenges to progress while putting in place tangible and actionable solutions for a sustainable energy future. We are proud to announce the dates for AEW 2024: Invest in African Energy, a platform which has not only emerged as the largest energy event on the continent but the official place to sign deals, forge partnerships and advance sustainable energy,” states NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the AEC.

Ahead of the AEW 2023 edition, delegates, sponsors and partners interested in reaffirming their commitment to Africa’s sustainable future are encouraged to secure their place at the 2024 edition of the conference. AEW 2024: Invest in African Energy builds on the success of the previous editions and proudly marks its return as the premier event for the African energy sector. We look forward to welcoming you back to Cape Town for AEW 2024: Invest in African Energy.

AEW is the AEC’s annual conference, exhibition and networking event. AEW 2024 will once again unite African energy policymakers and stakeholders with global investors to discuss and maximize opportunities within the continent’s entire energy industry. Keep following www.aecweek.com for more information about this exciting event! Details to follow soon.

African Energy Chamber: European travel bans restraining recovery efforts

African Energy Chamber: European travel bans restraining recovery efforts

Because of its international nature, the oil and gas sector relies on global value-chains and successful cooperation and movement of people, goods and services between foreign and local contractors. The ongoing travel bans and restrictions of visa issuance are preventing many projects from moving forward and contributing to the recovery of the continent.

Major international oil companies such as Total, BP, Shell, Eni, ExxonMobil, Chevron or Equinor and independents such as Kosmos Energy, BW Energy, Maurel & Prom or Tullow Oil that operate a major share of Africa’s daily oil and gas production are currently unable to operate fully and safely because of such travel restrictions. Similarly, they directly impact the operations of the major international services and EPC companies supposed to work on major projects, such as Saipem, TechnipFMC, Schlumberger or Halliburton.

“We cannot base our recovery narrative and hopes on the oil and gas sector and at the same time forbid the movement and travel of the workers and employees supposed to make that recovery happen,” declared Nj Ayuk, Executive Chairman at the African Energy Chamber. “We are urgently calling for pragmatism and the adoption of realistic measures that put workers’ safety and economic recovery at the centre of public and travel policies priorities,” he added.

From West to Southern Africa, landmark energy projects worth billions of dollars have been delayed because of the ongoing pandemic of Covid-19 and its subsequent lockdowns and travel restrictions. However, and as economies gradually reopen, a new wave of travel restrictions, especially on the issuance of visas between Europe and Africa, is adding up to the list of challenges the industry faces to play its key role in the continent’s economic recovery. Such restrictions are threatening the efficient operations of global value-chains whose functioning is critical to enable Africa’s energy projects to move forward.

Kosmos Energy Returns to African Energy Week: Invest in African Energy 2024 as a Diamond Sponsor

African Energy Chamber

Africa's abundant hydrocarbon reserves, comprising approximately 125.3 billion barrels of crude oil and 620 trillion cubic feet of proven gas, offer lucrative investment opportunities for global E&P players and serve as a cornerstone for achieving the continent's industrialization objectives.

As African nations collaborate with global E&P firms possessing both financial resources and technical expertise to maximize the development and utilization of these reserves, forming alliances with companies like the U.S.-based global energy firm Kosmos Energy becomes indispensable.

In line with its commitment to catalyzing investment for the sustainable advancement of the African energy sector, Kosmos Energy has joined as a diamond sponsor at this year's African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energy conference.

AEW: Invest in African Energy is the platform of choice for project operators, financiers, technology providers and government, and has emerged as the official place to sign deals in African energy. Visit www.AECWeek.com for more information about this exciting event.

Kosmos Energy's participation in this year's AEW: Invest in African Energy marks its third consecutive year of participating, with the company advocating for inclusive strategies regarding Africa's pathway to eliminating energy poverty and shaping global energy security. During this year's edition, Kosmos Energy will build upon previous discussions, emphasizing its ongoing focus on bolstering investments within the continent. As a leading energy investor in Africa and a trusted partner in oil and gas development, Kosmos Energy continues to influence the stability and growth of African energy markets and economies.

In Senegal and Mauritania, Kosmos Energy has emerged as an investment champion, advancing these nations closer to first gas production through the development of the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim liquified natural gas (LNG) project, slated to commence gas production this year. Kosmos Energy also assumed operatorship of the Yakaar-Teranga project in Senegal in November 2023, underscoring its commitment to driving investments towards unlocking Senegal's full energy potential. Yakaar-Teranga is one of the world’s largest gas discoveries in recent years and holds around 25 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of advantaged gas in place. Kosmos Energy has been working closely with PETROSEN and the Government of Senegal on an innovative development concept that prioritizes cost-competitive gas to the rapidly growing domestic market, combined with an offshore liquefied natural gas facility targeting exports into international markets. As concept optimization progresses, the aim is for PETROSEN to participate as an equal partner in the full value chain with a greater working interest.

In Ghana, Kosmos Energy's investments are pivotal in shaping the stability of the oil and gas industry, with the firm expanding its production in-country through the successful launch of the Jubilee South East Project in 2023. Kosmos Energy is also investing in oil and gas decarbonization solutions at the Jubilee and TEN fields in Ghana, with a target to eliminate routine gas flaring by 2026, highlighting its commitment to helping Africa balance industrialization and environmental sustainability targets at the same time. Additionally, the company continues to support the development of Ghana's next-generation workforce through initiatives like the Kosmos Innovation Center ( https://KICGhana.org/ ), which helps young entrepreneurs turn their ideas into viable businesses and works alongside promising small businesses to help them reach their full potential.

In Equatorial Guinea, Kosmos Energy continues to make significant strides with investments in optimizing production at the Ceiba and Okume fields, as well as exploration with the Akeng Deep prospect.

“Kosmos Energy's activities across the African market have played a pivotal role in stabilizing investment flows within the continent's oil and gas industry. With Africa's pursuit of sustainable development hinging on the full exploitation of energy resources, investments from companies like Kosmos Energy will be essential in unlocking new opportunities across the energy sector and related industries,” said NJ Ayuk, the Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber.

Your last-minute guide to Monday's total solar eclipse

Photo Illustration: The phases of a total solar eclipse

A total solar eclipse will cross North America on Monday , offering millions a rare opportunity to see afternoon skies temporarily darken as the moon blocks the face of the sun.

Tune into NBC News NOW as Lester Holt hosts a two-hour special at 2 p.m. ET Monday from Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The eclipse's path fortuitously cuts across Mexico, 15 U.S. states and a small part of eastern Canada. In all other states in the continental U.S., viewers will be treated to a partial solar eclipse, with the moon appearing to take a bite out of the sun and obscuring part of its light.

Here’s everything you need to know about the rare celestial event.

What is a solar eclipse?

Solar eclipses occur when the sun, moon and Earth align. The moon passes between Earth and sun, temporarily blocking the sun’s light and casting a shadow on Earth.

A total solar eclipse is when the moon fully obscures the sun, whereas a partial solar eclipse means it blocks just a portion of the sun’s face.

Solar eclipses occur only with the new moon. Because the moon’s orbit around Earth is tilted, the three bodies don’t always line up in a way that creates an eclipse.

“Imagine if the moon’s orbit were in the plane of Earth’s orbit around the sun — if that were the case, then every new moon, you’d have a total solar eclipse and every full moon, you’d have a lunar eclipse,” Neil DeGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, told NBC News. “So, because things don’t always align, it lends to the rarity of the event and the specialness of the event.”

Where and when will the eclipse be visible?

This year’s eclipse will follow a slightly wider path over more populated areas of the continental U.S. than other total solar eclipses have in the recent past.

NASA estimates that 31.6 million people live within what’s known as the path of totality, where the total solar eclipse will be visible. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path, according to the agency.

The path travels through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Tiny parts of Michigan and Tennessee will also be able to witness totality if conditions are clear.

After the eclipse crosses into Canada, it will pass over southern Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton, at the eastern end of Nova Scotia.

Those outside the path of totality can still take part in the astronomical event by viewing a partial solar eclipse — visible throughout all 48 states of the contiguous U.S. — or a NASA livestream.

The timing, including how long totality lasts, depends on the location, but some spots will see the moon fully cover the sun for up to 4 minutes and 28 seconds.

Below is a list of timings for some cities along the path of totality, as  provided by NASA . A number of other resources, including NationalEclipse.com  and  TimeandDate.com , can also help people plan.

  • Dallas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:23 p.m. CT and totality at 1:40 p.m.
  • Little Rock, Arkansas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:33 p.m. CT and totality at 1:51 p.m.
  • Cleveland: Partial eclipse begins at 1:59 p.m. ET and totality at 3:13 p.m.
  • Buffalo, New York: Partial eclipse begins at 2:04 p.m. ET and totality at 3:18 p.m.
  • Lancaster, New Hampshire: Partial eclipse begins at 2:16 p.m. ET and totality at 3:27 p.m.

This composite image of thirteen photographs shows the progression of a total solar eclipse

How to safely view a solar eclipse

It is never safe to gaze directly at the sun, even when it is partly or mostly covered by the moon. Special eclipse glasses or  pinhole projectors  are required to safely view solar eclipses and prevent eye damage. Failing to take the proper precautions can result in severe eye injury,  according to NASA .

Eclipse glasses are thousands of times darker than normal sunglasses and specially made to enable wearers to look at the sun during these kinds of celestial events.

Sky-watchers should also never view any part of the sun through binoculars, telescopes or camera lenses unless they have specific solar filters attached. Eclipse glasses should not be used with these devices, as they will not provide adequate protection.

However, during the few minutes of totality, when the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to look with the naked eye.

Image: Tyler Hanson

Beware of fake eclipse glasses. On legitimate pairs, the lenses should have a silver appearance on the front and be black on the inside. The manufacturer’s name and address should be clearly labeled, and they should not be torn or punctured. Check, as well, for the ISO logo and the code “IS 12312-2” printed on the inside.

If you don’t have eclipse glasses, you can make a homemade pinhole projector, which lets sunlight in through a small hole, focuses it and projects it onto a piece of paper, wall or other surface to create an image of the sun that is safe to look at.

All you need is two pieces of white cardboard or plain white paper, aluminum foil and a pin or thumbtack. Cut a 1- to 2-inch square or rectangle out of the center of a piece of white paper or cardboard. Tape aluminum foil over that cut-out shape, then use a pin or thumbtack to poke a tiny hole in the foil.

During the eclipse, place a second piece of white paper or cardboard on the ground as a screen and hold the projector with the foil facing up and your back to the sun. Adjusting how far you hold the projector from the second piece of paper will alter the size of the image on the makeshift screen.

What to look for while viewing the total solar eclipse

For people along the path of totality, there are some fun milestones to keep track of as the total solar eclipse unfolds.

As the eclipse progresses and the sun gets thinner in the sky, it will start to get eerily dark, according to Tyson.

The "diamond ring effect" is shown following totality of the solar eclipse at Palm Cove in Australia's Tropical North Queensland in 2012.

When the last beams of sunlight are about to become obscured, look out for the “diamond ring effect”: The sun’s atmosphere will appear as an illuminated halo, and the last light still visible will look like the diamond of a giant ring.

As the sunlight decreases even further, an effect known as Baily’s beads will be created by the moon’s rugged terrain. Tiny “beads” of light will be visible for only a few seconds around the dark moon, as the last bits of sunlight peer through the moon’s mountains and valleys.

When the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to remove eclipse glasses and look at the total solar eclipse with the naked eye.

The Bailey's Beads effect is seen as the moon makes its final move over the sun during the total solar eclipse on Monday, August 21, 2017 above Madras, Oregon.

Some lucky sky-watchers may even catch a glimpse of a comet .

Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks — nicknamed the “ devil comet ” because an eruption last year left it with two distinct trails of gas and ice in the shape of devil horns — is currently visible from the Northern Hemisphere as it swings through the inner solar system.

The comet can be seen in the early evenings by gazing toward the west-northwest horizon. During the eclipse, when skies darken during totality, it may be possible to see the comet near Jupiter, but its visibility will depend on whether it’s in the middle of an outburst and thus brighter than normal.

Most likely, all eyes will be on the alignment of the moon and sun.

“Most people won’t even notice,” Tyson said. “But if you know to look, it’s there.”

When is the next solar eclipse?

The next total solar eclipse will be in 2026, but it will mostly pass over the Arctic Ocean, with some visibility in Greenland, Iceland, Portugal and northern Spain. In 2027, a total solar eclipse will be visible in Spain and a swath of northern Africa.

The next total solar eclipse visible from North America will be in 2033, but only over Alaska. Then in 2044, a total solar eclipse will cross Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, parts of Canada and Greenland.

The next total solar eclipse to cross the continental U.S. coast-to-coast in will occur in 2045. The path of totality for that eclipse will cut through California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia and Florida.

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .
