Spotlight on: The Rhine-Main-Danube canal

by Emma Smith - 25/11/2018

The Rhine-Main-Danube canal is a 106-mile-long waterway connecting three major rivers of Europe and allowing free flow of traffic between the North Sea and the Black Sea. Beginning in the German town of Bamberg on the Main river, the canal travels to Kelheim in Bavaria, where it meets the Danube river.

The history of the waterway

Picturesque riverside town in Germany - Bamberg

The waterway was initially conceived by Charlemagne, Charles I, in 793, who wished to open a new route for his battle fleet. Following heavy rainfall, the original channel collapsed, and the project was abandoned. Ludwig I of Bavaria reimagined the waterway in 1837 when he worked on a canal which followed much the same route as the canal we see today. This was utilised until World War II but underwent extensive damage and was abandoned once more.

In 1921, the German government and state of Bavaria formed a company to build a much larger Rhine-Main-Danube canal, enlarging the locks and installing several hydroelectric power stations. These constructions took place between 1960 and 1992, with a total of 16 locks dotted along the river banks to deal with the extreme height differences between the rivers.

Now when sailing along the waterway, you will experience a transition of nearly 1,400 feet across 100 miles. Reach the banks of some of Germany and Hungary’s best-loved towns and cities , from Nuremberg and Bamberg to Vienna in Austria and Budapest.

Taking the scenic route

Main Danube Canal

ANBerlin / Flickr.com , CC BY-ND 2.0

Some of the best ports on Rhine, Main and Danube river cruises can be visited along this picturesque canal.

Beginning in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bamberg’s Altstadt , this German town is the perfect place to begin your crossing of the Rhine-Main-Danube canal. The beer is deliciously smoky and the medieval streets of Bamberg are narrow, oozing charisma and charm and ranking as one of Germany’s most attractive towns.

Travel onward to Fürth, where you can admire the city centre architecture or explore the municipal museum, which boasts a history stretching back over 1,000 years. Head through the Valley of Regnitz and you will reach the town of Roth as you pass by the Frankish Alb mountains, also known as the Franconian Jura or Fränkische Alb.

Before the canal joins the Danube, explore the small Bavarian town of Dietfurt, a characteristic town that comes alive with the celebrations of carnival during Lent .

Uses in the modern age

Serene landscape along the river Rhine

It is believed that the canal has impacted the ecosystems throughout the River Rhine and Danube, with the waterway transporting species of fish, clams, shrimp and crabs between countries. In more recent years, the highest level of goods transported was in food and feed, reaching 1.6 million tons, followed by goods in agriculture and forestry, then ores and metal scrap.

Freight volume by country in 2010 was largely dominated by Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium, who together contributed 87 per cent of all goods transported between them.

The network of waterways offers an enchanting experience for cruisers as they journey between several countries at once, enjoying the fairytale scenery of Germany and Bavaria before sailing through the captivating culture and cuisines of Hungary and Austria .

The Main River flows from the Rhine at Mainz, twisting and turning through vineyards, wine villages and ancient towns rich in medieval architecture. From Miltenberg with its ancient market place the Main reaches Wurzburg. Here the Prince-Bishop’s Residenz, a UNESCO World Monument, features the largest ceiling fresco in the world.

Bamberg on the Main is an architectural gem, its Old Town Hall decorated with lavish frescos. This marks the start of the Main-Danube Canal, winding 106 miles through rural Bavaria linking the Main with the River Danube at Kelheim. Only completed in 1992, the Canal includes 16 locks that rise to a height of 1330 feet near Nuremberg, the highest point of any commercial waterway in Europe.

Explore Nuremberg’s 13th century city walls, complete with moats, watchtowers and gateways. From Nuremberg the Canal continues to meet the River Danube, which flows on to Passau, Vienna and Budapest, and eventually the Black Sea.

Here are a few highlights of a cruise along the Rhine and Danube rivers:

  • Cologne’s striking Gothic Cathedral
  • The imposing Heidelberg Castle with views of the Neckar River Valley
  • Bamberg’s half-timbered houses and brightly-coloured Little Venice area
  • See the first printed Bible in the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz
  • Medieval Nuremberg and its WWII sites
  • Wertheim’s 12th-century castle
  • The ornate Bishop’s Residenz palace in Wurzburg
  • Frankfurt’s towering skyscrapers and quaint medieval Old Town
  • Travel along the Romantic Road to the medieval town of Rothenburg
  • Miltenberg’s richly-timbered houses and narrow cobblestone streets

We can highly recommend this cruise the organisation was superb with every detail dealt with .The places we visited had so much to see but the guides managed to help us see the major sights and give us information as we walked .For those with walking problems there was a small bus to help their transport needs .We particularly liked the open dining with no fixed seating ,so we were able to meet many interesting people, and make new friends. The staff on the boat were efficient and friendly and the cleanliness was outstanding .The food was excellent and they dealt with dietary needs well..I will send a photo separately

I am still in overload after being away for 6 weeks including the Splendours of Europe cruise. However, the combination of blue Water Holidays and the Emerald Dawn was faultless. Possibly the best holiday experience of my life. Everyone went beyond what I would have expected. The service and friendliness of the Emerald Dawn was so genuine. A perfect holiday made so be an awesome ship and wonderful people.

It was the first River Cruise we had booked after many ocean cruises and our opinion is that it was a most enjoyable, if not exhausting, experience.

We were met at the airport and coached to the ship in Amsterdam with the evening to explore the local area. Throughout our voyage we were kept well informed of anything by the very skilled Cruise Director, Roland, who also assisted so many passengers with a myriad of problems and questions. The passengers thought very highly of him with just cause.

The journey went smoothly from beginning to end and we enjoyed seeing all the varied scenery and exploring the towns and cities along the way. It was good to have included excursions in the price even if they were early morning starts. We were not disappointed with the venues.

Our Owners Suite was well appointed and looked after extremely well by the ever cheerful Hemli. We appreciated the welcome champagne and basket of fruit on arrival and the necessary bottles of water throughout the voyage.

The food and service throughout was second to none and the dining room staff were very generous with the beer and wine.

Departure procedures went smoothly and efficiently.

Overall we would recommend Blue Water Holidays.

Frankfurt

Connected to the Danube via the Main-Danube Canal, Frankfurt is one of the most unique cities in Germany. After all, it is the only city with a skyline of skyscrapers. A view of the metropolis from the observation deck of the MAIN TOWER is a very special experience. However, Frankfurt is not only a very modern and busy city, but also has a lot of history to offer its visitors. For example, the Römer and the Paulskirche are among the most famous historical sights in Germany. And when it comes to art and culture, Frankfurt is also an absolute hotspot. With almost 40 museums and exhibition houses, the Frankfurt Museumsufer is one of the most important international museum locations..

Wertheim

There, where the river Tauber flows into the Main, lies the small town of Wertheim. Magnificent half-timbered buildings characterize the shape of the market square. One of the sights of the town is the parish church, which dates back to the Gothic period. In its interior, the Counts of Wertheim found their last resting place, who ruled here from the 15th to the 18th century. Other tourist attractions include the glass museum and a stately castle perched on a mountain high above the town.

Würzburg

Towering high above the Main River, this landmark is visible from afarof the city, the Marienberg Fortress. For centuries it was seat of the Würzburg prince-bishops. Already the walk across The Old Main Bridge with its oversized stone figures becomes an experience. From the Marienberg opens a magnificent Panoramic view over the vineyards and the towers of about 60 churches. The Würzburg Residence as a City Palace of the Princebishops was already in 1981 by UNESCO in the list of World Heritage Sites included. When visiting the baroque Castle on the edge of downtown reveals the courtyardgarden as a green gem

Bamberg

The UNESCO World Heritage City of Bamberg enchants its visitors with a dreamlike old town that invites you to stroll and discover. The most famous street in the city, Sandstrasse, also runs through the old town, which is also home to the Schlenkerla brewery, which has been in existence since 1405. The brewery pub is legendary and here locals and tourists alike enjoy themselves with Rauchbier and Bamberger Zwiebel. Bamberg's Romanesque cathedral of St. Peter and St. George rises above Sandstrasse. This is known as the Kaiserdom, because the imperial couple Heinrich and Kunigunde are buried here. In addition, the only papal tomb north of the Alps can be found in the imperial cathedral. Right next to the cathedral is the Alte Hofhaltung. The Renaissance building now houses the city's historical museum. Directly opposite is the Neue Residenz, which served as the residence of the prince bishops of Bamberg from 1602 and is surrounded by a magnificent rose garden planned by Balthasar Neumann. From the Rosengarten Haus you can enjoy a magnificent view over the city. The absolute highlight, however, is the Old Town Hall. The landmark of the city is located between the city center and the old town in the middle of the left arm of the Regnitz River and impresses not only because of the unusual design, but also because of the elaborate facade painting, which draws the eye..

Nürnberg

Nuremberg is an independent city in Bavaria, not far from Fürth. Even today you can recognize the medieval architecture that runs through the entire city. The old city walls and the imperial castle tell of days long gone. Nuremberg is famous for its Christmas market. The Christkind heralds the Advent and Christmas market season. The classic Christstollen is world famous and a real treat. Numerous museums such as the Albrecht Dürer House or the Toy Museum are popular attractions in the city.

Regensburg

Regensburg is a very special city: more than 1,000 listed buildings make the city at the northernmost point of the Danube the only remaining medieval large city in Germany. Due to its beauty and historical significance, the city has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2006. Regensburg's landmark is the 12th-century Stone Bridge, which spans the Danube with 16 arches over a length of more than 300 meters. Another main sight of the city is the Gothic cathedral from the 13th century with its twin towers. Also known throughout Germany is the Valhalla, located at the gates of the city, a memorial site where important personalities are honored.

Passau

Due to its special geographical location at the confluence of the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers, Passau is undoubtedly one of the most unique cities in Germany. But not only the location of the city on the three rivers is exceptional, Passau also offers its visitors numerous remarkable sights. Towering above the city is the Veste Oberhaus, an impressive fortress dating back to the 13th century. The old town of Passau is known for its beautiful baroque architecture, especially the Cathedral of St. Stephen with its characteristic onion domes and the largest cathedral organ in the world with almost 18,000 pipes..

Celebrating the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal

Nuremberg, Germany

Our 2022 European river cruises are ready to begin departures in April – and we can’t help but join the celebration for the 30th anniversary of the launch of operations for the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal. Charlemagne ordered a canal to be built in 793, linking the Main and Danube rivers, but that was before locks were invented – so the Fossa Carolina became a ditch too far. Napoleon’s canal dream was cut short by Waterloo. King Ludwig I of Bavaria succeeded in 1840, but the Ludwig Bavarian Canal with its troublesome 101 locks couldn’t compete with the ease and efficiency of the Ludwig Bavarian Railroad.

Nevertheless, the dreamers persisted, and in 1992 the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal, became a concrete reality, a marvel of modern engineering, and the essential link in a 2,200-mile water highway spanning Europe from Amsterdam to Istanbul. As a mover of cargo, the canal still can’t compete with railroads, but it opened the door to a new industry that Charlemagne never imagined: the public touring by river cruise. To every corner of the continent that lost empires could not go, now travel dreamers can.

This remarkably new chapter within thousands of years of European history connects the rivers Main and Danube across the European Watershed, running from Bamberg through Nürnberg to Kelheim, outside Regensburg. Infinite stories reign in this region, including:

River Cruise Guide for Seniors Along the Danube and Rhine

W elcome to our guide on river cruising, specially designed for seniors who love to travel! River cruises are a great way for seniors to see beautiful places comfortably and easily. They are perfect if you don’t like the trouble of packing and unpacking a lot. In this guide, we talk about two famous European rivers: the Danube and the Rhine. These cruises for seniors will show you lovely views and old cities and make sure you’re comfortable the whole time. Whether you travel a lot or this is your first cruise, this guide will show you why river cruises are great for seniors. Sit back, relax, and join us as we explore why a Danube and Rhine river cruise is a wonderful choice for seniors.

Why Choose a River Cruise for Seniors?

For seniors looking for a memorable travel experience, river cruises are an excellent choice. Unlike ocean cruises, river cruises offer a more intimate and relaxed journey. They typically host fewer passengers, which means more personal attention and less crowding. This is especially appealing to seniors who value comfort and a peaceful environment.

One of the biggest advantages of a river cruise is the scenic and gentle nature of the journey. These cruises glide along historic waterways, offering stunning views of landscapes, quaint villages, and iconic cities. The slower pace of river cruising is perfect for seniors who want to enjoy their travel without feeling rushed. It’s an effortless way to see multiple destinations while enjoying the luxury of staying in one place.

Moreover, river cruises are known for their accessibility. The smaller size of river ships means easier navigation for seniors, with fewer stairs and more convenient access to all areas of the vessel. This accessibility extends to shore excursions as well, which are often tailored to be senior-friendly.

Finally, river cruises provide an enriching cultural experience. From onboard lectures about local history and culture to excursions that take you into the heart of each destination, these cruises offer a deeper understanding and appreciation of the places visited. It’s not just a journey; it’s an immersive cultural experience, making it an ideal choice for seniors eager to explore and learn.

River cruises offer seniors a comfortable, scenic, and culturally rich travel experience perfectly suited to their pace and interests.

Exploring the Danube River

The Danube River, Europe’s second-longest river, is a treasure trove of experiences for senior travelers. Flowing through ten countries, it offers a unique blend of natural beauty, historical richness, and cultural diversity. A cruise along the Danube is not just a journey through a scenic waterway; it’s a passage through centuries of history and culture.

For seniors embarking on a Danube River cruise, the experience begins with the breathtaking landscapes. The river meanders through rolling hills, vineyards, and dramatic cliffs, offering ever-changing vistas that are easily enjoyed from the comfort of the ship. This serene setting is perfect for those who wish to relax and soak in the natural beauty of a tranquil environment.

As the cruise progresses, a series of enchanting cities and towns unfold along the banks.

Vienna , the city of music, enchants with its imperial architecture and classical concerts – a treat for seniors who appreciate the finer arts.

In Budapest , the stunning Hungarian capital split by the river, you can witness the majestic Parliament building, especially captivating when lit up at night. Bratislava, with its charming old town and laid-back atmosphere, offers a quieter but equally rewarding experience.

For history enthusiasts, the Danube River cruise is a journey back in time. Visit ancient fortresses like Devin Castle near Bratislava, or explore the Roman ruins in Viminacium, near Belgrade. Each site tells a story that enriches the travel experience.

The Danube also presents a culinary journey. Seniors can indulge in local flavors, tasting dishes that have been perfected over generations. From the hearty goulash of Hungary to Austria’s famous pastries, each region offers its own culinary delights. Additionally, wine lovers will appreciate the fine wines produced in the Wachau Valley, renowned for its vineyards.

Each stop along the Danube offers leisurely-paced excursions, ensuring senior travelers can explore comfortably at their own pace. These excursions often include guided tours with knowledgeable guides who provide insights into the local history and culture, making the experience both enjoyable and educational.

The Danube River cruise for seniors is a splendid blend of natural beauty, historical exploration, and cultural immersion. It’s a journey that satisfies the soul and sparks the imagination, leaving travelers with memories to cherish for a lifetime.

Exploring the Rhine River

A cruise along the Rhine River is a journey through the heart of Europe, offering senior travelers an enchanting mix of fairy-tale landscapes, medieval castles, and vibrant cultural centers. Stretching from the Swiss Alps to the North Sea, the Rhine passes through a variety of stunning landscapes and historic cities, making it a prime destination for a leisurely and enriching cruise experience.

As seniors embark on a Rhine River cruise, they are greeted by the picturesque beauty of the river’s banks. The Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is particularly breathtaking with its steep vineyards, quaint villages, and numerous castles perched on hillsides. This section, often referred to as the Romantic Rhine truly captures the essence of a storybook in Europe.

The cities along the Rhine are equally captivating. Cologne, with its iconic twin-spired cathedral, is a must-visit for its rich history and vibrant atmosphere. Strasbourg, in the Alsace region, is enchanted with its blend of French and German cultures, showcased in its architecture, cuisine, and unique Alsatian wines. Basel, known for its art and culture, offers a more laid-back experience, ideal for seniors who appreciate the quieter side of city life.

Historical exploration is a significant aspect of the Rhine cruise. The region is dotted with castles and fortresses that date back to the Middle Ages, like the imposing Marksburg Castle and the ruins of Heidelberg Castle. These sites provide a window into the past and are often accompanied by fascinating stories and legends.

The Rhine also offers a culinary journey that appeals to senior travelers. From the hearty German cuisine and world-class Rieslings to the delicate flavors of Alsace, each region along the river offers its own gastronomic delights. Many cruises include onboard tastings and themed dinners, providing a taste of local flavors in a comfortable setting.

Moreover, the pace of a Rhine cruise is particularly suitable for seniors. With options for leisurely strolls in port towns and relaxed sightseeing tours, travelers can explore at a comfortable pace. The accessibility of these tours ensures that the beauty and culture of the Rhine are easily enjoyed by all.

In summary, a Rhine River cruise presents a wonderful combination of scenic beauty, historical exploration, and cultural immersion. It’s an ideal choice for senior travelers seeking a relaxing yet enriching European adventure.

8 Must-Haves for Your River Cruise

Embarking on a river cruise, especially for seniors, calls for thoughtful preparation to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable journey. Here are some must-haves that you should consider packing for your Danube or Rhine river cruise:

  • Comfortable Footwear: As you’ll likely be exploring a lot during port stops, comfortable walking shoes are essential. Opt for sturdy, non-slip shoes that can handle cobblestone streets and uneven surfaces.
  • Layered Clothing: Weather can be unpredictable, especially when cruising along European rivers. Pack lightweight, layered clothing that can easily be added or removed. Include a waterproof jacket for unexpected rain showers.
  • Binoculars : To fully appreciate the scenic vistas along the rivers, a pair of binoculars is a great accessory. They’re perfect for viewing architectural details of distant castles or spotting wildlife along the riverbanks.
  • Medications and Health Supplies: Apart from your prescription medications, bring along basic health supplies like pain relievers, band-aids, and any daily vitamins. Also, consider seasickness remedies if you’re prone to motion sickness, though river cruises are generally very smooth.
  • Portable Power Bank: A power bank is handy for long days out when you might need to charge your phone or camera.
  • Travel Documents and Currency: Keep your passport, travel insurance information, and any necessary visas easily accessible. Also, carry some local currency for small purchases ashore, as some smaller shops may not accept credit cards.
  • Sun Protection: Sunglasses, sunhat, and sunscreen are crucial, especially during the summer months, to protect against the sun’s rays while you’re enjoying the deck or on excursions.
  • Camera : Don’t forget your camera or smartphone to capture memorable landscapes and historic sights.

Packing these essentials will help ensure that your river cruise experience is as comfortable and enjoyable as possible, letting you focus on the beauty and culture of the Danube and Rhine rivers.

Choosing the Right Cruise for Seniors

Selecting the right river cruise is key to ensuring a fulfilling and comfortable experience, especially for senior travelers. When considering a cruise along the Danube or Rhine, there are several factors to keep in mind:

Cruise Line and Ship Size:

Different cruise lines cater to varying preferences and styles. Some offer a more luxurious experience, while others focus on cultural immersion. Smaller ships often provide a more intimate and personalized experience, which can be ideal for seniors seeking a relaxed pace and easy accessibility.

Cabin Comfort and Accessibility:

AmaViola Suite

Consider the layout and facilities of the cabins. For seniors, it’s important to choose a cabin that is easily accessible, preferably without many stairs. Some ships offer cabins specifically designed for seniors or those with mobility issues, featuring wider doorways and walk-in showers.

Itinerary and Duration:

Look at the itinerary closely. Some cruises might be more port-intensive, with daily stops and excursions, while others offer more days at sea for relaxation. Depending on your stamina and interest, choose an itinerary that balances sightseeing with downtime. Duration is also a key consideration – shorter cruises might be a better fit for those who tire easily.

Pace of Activities:

Check the type and pace of activities offered. Many river cruises offer a range of excursion options, from leisurely walking tours to more active adventures. Ensure that there are activities suited to your comfort level and interests.

Medical Facilities and Services:

Confirm the availability of medical services onboard. While river cruises are generally safe, having medical support readily available provides peace of mind, especially for those with health concerns.

Dining Options:

AmaWaterways River Cruise food

Consider the dining arrangements. Look for cruises that offer flexible dining times and a variety of meal options, catering to different dietary needs and preferences.

Reviews and Recommendations:

Finally, read reviews and seek recommendations from other senior travelers. Personal experiences can provide valuable insights into what to expect and help you make an informed decision.

Senior travelers can choose a river cruise that not only meets their needs but also provides an enriching and enjoyable experience along the Danube and Rhine rivers considering these factors.

Making the Most of Your River Cruise Experience

To truly enjoy your Danube or Rhine river cruise, embrace every moment. Engage with fellow travelers and share stories; these interactions often enhance the travel experience. Participate in onboard activities and attend educational talks to deepen your understanding of the regions you’re visiting.

Don’t hesitate to spend some quiet time on the deck, soaking in the scenic landscapes and peaceful ambiance of the river. Remember, the beauty of a river cruise lies not just in the destinations but in the journey itself. So, relax, stay present, and savor the unique experiences your river cruise offers.

A river cruise along the Danube or Rhine offers seniors a wonderful blend of comfort, adventure, and cultural enrichment. It’s a chance to explore Europe’s heart in a way that’s both relaxing and engaging. So, embark on this journey and create memories that will last a lifetime. Book a river cruise .
