South Shetland Islands & Antarctic Peninsula

DEPARTING FROM: Ushuaia FINAL DESTINATION: Ushuaia

DURATION: 10 Days/ 9 Nights REGION: Antarctica SHIP: Ocean Victory

Departing Ushuaia in Argentina, cross the mighty Drake Passage en route to the South Shetland Islands, making Zodiac landings at penguin rookeries, research stations and fascinating lookouts along the way. Continuing southward, deep into the inlets of Antarctica, pass the famous Gerlache Strait, where 1,000 metre ice cliffs rise straight out of the still water. On no other journey can you experience so much pristine nature and varied wildlife in so few days! When Ocean Victory returns to Tierra del Fuego and Ushuaia, depending on weather conditions, she might pass close to the mythical Cape Horn - the southernmost point on South America; a celebrated maritime landmark.

Aboard the new Ice Class 1A / Polar Code 6 expedition ships Ocean Victory and Ocean Albatros, you are sure to get close to the dramatic coastlines. Zodiac cruising and shore landings are an important and considerable part of the planned itinerary, enabling all expedition guests to set foot several times on the Antarctic continent, as well as the many surrounding sub-antarctic islands. Any voyage to Antarctica is an adventure, but with a maximum capacity of 189 guests, this expedition offers a unique experience for the few. Shore landings, excursions, lectures and whale safaris are easily accommodated to help you enjoy a matchless expedition experience.

The Ocean Albatros ship features dedicated outdoor observation areas (including the fore-located Observation Deck with two Hydraulic Platforms and two Viewing Platforms), and a stern marina (watersports platform) for sea kayaking, snorkeling and scuba diving programs. Four Zodiac Docks serve as boat launching platforms, allowing for easier and faster boarding.

All staterooms have private, full-size bathrooms with shower / WC, hairdryer, and premium bath amenities. Sixty percent of all cabins can be booked with triple occupancy, accommodating a third person on a pull-out couch/sofa bed.

Safety and Environmental-Friendly Features

MV Ocean Albatros is the ideal vessel for small-ship cruising thanks to her solid build and X-Bow design, which gives superior stability in adverse weather and allows for the smoothest motions on large waves while maintaining high speeds. The vessel is part of a new breed of low-energy vessels, powered by four diesel engines and two electric motors that are all electronically regulated to maximize speed and fuel efficiency. Implementing the Green Initiative Program, Ocean Albatros is one of the world’s most environmentally friendly expedition ships, with a carbon footprint that is more than fifty percent lower than that of a regular expedition ship.

The itineraries include landings and excursions aboard the ship’s fleet of 18 inflatable, motorized rubber Zodiac boats. Their versatility enables you to make landfall on remote shores, cruise along awe-inspiring coastlines and share breathtakingly close encounters with whales, seals, penguins, seabirds and more. You will come within an arm’s reach of icebergs and set foot on land discovered by pioneering explorers just over a century ago.
