10 of the best easy cycling holidays in Europe

While Geraint Thomas wannabes might tackle the Alps or Pyrenees, here are 10 less-challenging but equally scenic routes for families and newbies

Toulouse to Sète, Canal du Midi, France

It is possible to cycle all the way across south-west France, from Bordeaux on the Atlantic to Sète on the Mediterranean, following just one river and two canals. Beginners might prefer to pace themselves by cycling the second half, from Toulouse to Sète along the towpaths of the Canal du Midi . At 150 miles (240km), it is a decent distance, but is flat and can be broken up into manageable stages. The going can be a bit rough and bumpy, so consider investing in a gel saddle cover. Places to spend a night or two include the fortified city of Carcassonne, a short detour from the canal, and historic Béziers. There is an optional one-day add-on to Sète.

The iconic river spans 10 countries and 2,850km, and has well-developed riverside cycle paths through Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary. There is no traffic to contend with – other than the 38,000 cyclists who ride the Austrian section alone every year – and tackling it in a downstream (south-westerly) direction means the route is slightly downhill pretty much all the way. Good starting points include Regensburg or Passau in Germany, finishing in Vienna or Bratislava, capital of Slovakia. Alternatively, start in Vienna and cycle the 370km to Budapest, where there are thermal baths to ease aching muscles. Pisa to Florence, Tuscany

Hilly Tuscany may not be an obvious choice for an easy cycling holiday, but keeping the distances short and adding rest days makes it doable – and the scenery is well worth the effort. Start with a day or two in Pisa, then cycle along the Serchio River to the walled city of Lucca (45km). The next day, cover another 45km to Montecatini Terme, Italy’s biggest spa town, stopping at Collodi and Pescia along the way. Either spend a day in the spa or cycle a circular route around the Medici villas, through vineyards and olive groves, stopping at Vinci to visit the Museo Leonardiano (60km). The final ride to Florence is the longest, at 64km, but it can be shortened to 50km by taking the train to Pistoia and cycling the rest of the way. North Zealand, Denmark

Denmark is very bike-friendly, with 12,000km of cycle routes, safe cycling lanes in cities and largely flat terrain. Cyclists can spend a week following a circular route around North Zealand, known as the Danish Riviera, starting and finishing in Copenhagen – a popular route with families. Cycling anti-clockwise, the path hugs the shores of the Baltic Sea, sometimes turning inland through forests, nature reserves and around lakes, then skirts the fjords – Ise Fjord, Lammefjord, Holbæk Fjord, Roskilde Fjord – before reaching Roskilde. Daily distances average about 45km, and there are lots of beaches and coastal villages to stop at. Attractions en route include Kronborg Castle (Elsinore in Hamlet), and Roskilde’s cathedral and Viking Ship Museum . Black Forest, Germany

The Southern Black Forest Cycle Route is a 248km circular journey beginning and ending in Freiburg. The asphalt path follows a former railway line and is suitable for families, including those with young children in trailers. The route is mainly flat, with a few minor hills in the forest (a short train journey from Kirchzwarten to Titisee Lake on the first day cuts out the only steep section). The scenery is a mixture of forest and farmland, with a couple of days spent riding alongside the Rhine and the last day through vineyards. Cyclists can spend the nights in small medieval towns, and take a short train ride across the Swiss border for a night in Basel. Istrian Coast, Italy, Slovenia & Croatia

Cyclists can visit the three countries that share the Istrian peninsula on a week-long ride. The terrain is slightly hilly but distances are short, averaging 40km a day. The route starts in the Italian port of Trieste, then heads south on a coastal cycle path to pretty Piran in Slovenia. From here, it winds through the Sečovlje salt pans, then crosses into Croatia. Continuing south, places to spend a night include Umag, a medieval walled town; Poreč, with its sixth-century Euphrasian Basilica; and Rovinj, probably the most picturesque town on the peninsula. The path hugs the coast all the way down to the final stop, Pula, known for its well-preserved Roman amphitheatre. Fažana, 8km north of Pula, is the embarkation point for ferries to the Brijuni Islands. Amsterdam to Bruges

The Netherlands is paradise for cyclists: almost completely flat, with courteous drivers and segregated cycle paths everywhere. Cycling from Amsterdam across the border to Bruges, in equally bicycle-friendly Belgium, is perfectly possible in a week, but the distances are a little challenging: the first day’s ride, from Amsterdam to Gouda, is 80km. Another possibility is an organised bike and barge trip, sailing some of the way and cycling the rest, and eating and sleeping on board. A typical itinerary would involve rides of about 40km a day, spending nights in Dordrecht, Antwerp, Dendermonde and Ghent. From Bruges, there is a 37km loop to the beaches of the North Sea coast. And if it all gets too much, there is the option to skip a day’s cycling and stay on the barge. Way of the Roses, Lancashire to East Yorkshire

Not ready for Land’s End to John O’Groats just yet? The Way of the Roses is a challenging but rather more manageable long-distance ride: 275km from Morecambe on the Lancashire coast to the seaside town of Bridlington, East Yorkshire. The route follows quiet country lanes, disused railway lines and cycle paths. There are some tough climbs in the Yorkshire Dales, and the highest point, Greenhow Hill, near Grassington, is 400 metres above sea level. But after this (roughly the halfway point) the hills get smaller, and beyond Ripon the route is largely flat. The varied terrain includes the Forest of Bowland, the Nidderdale AONB, the Vale of York and the Yorkshire Wolds; the first day’s riding goes through Lancaster and the fourth day ends in York. Based on a six-day ride, the average daily distance is 46km. There is a corner of eastern Catalonia, south of the Pyrenees, where the hills slope down to a fertile valley that is flat and ideal for cycling. Starting inland in the Garrotxa region, cyclists can explore the meadows, woods and hamlets along the via verde (cycle path) and country roads. Near the town of Les Planes d’Hostoles, there are waterfalls to cool off in. The off-road continues right into historic Girona, where it is well worth spending a couple of days exploring sights including the Gothic cathedral, Jewish quarter and city walls. The final stretch leads to the Mediterranean, finishing at the upmarket resort of s’Agaró on the Costa Brava. Around Lake Constance

Lake Constance is bordered by Austria, Germany and Switzerland, and a 168-mile cycle path encircles the lake, allowing cyclists to visit all three countries on a week-long trip. The path is well-maintained and signposted, and is suitable for families and beginners. The route goes through forests, farms, vineyards and orchards, past cathedrals, castles and convents, and there are views of the Alps as well as the lake. Highlights include the Unesco-listed monastic island of Reichenau; the historic towns of Meersburg and Lindau; and the wildlife-rich Rhine delta. Cyclists can cool off with a dip in the lake or one of the summer lidos. It is best to ride clockwise, breaking the journey into four or more stages. In this article we share our pick of the best family cycling holidays in Europe; the kind that allow both kids and adults to relax, ride their bikes and explore somewhere new. If you love active family holidays, then this type of break should be perfect for you.

(But be prepared for the fact that a family cycling holiday/bike tour will likely be an entirely different ball game to the sort of cycling holidays you were used to without kids!)

This guide to the five best places to take family bike tours in Europe will, hopefully, inspire you to book your first – or next – family cycling break. From the sweeping salt marshes of Ile de Ré or the sparkling shores of Lake Constance to the Greenways near Girona, a loop of the Loire or discovering the Danube Cycle Path, these suggested routes are ideal for adults and kids alike.

Ile de Ré, France

Suggested route: The network of bike paths west from Saint Martin de Ré

Great for: Sea and salt marshes

Ile de Ré is a gorgeous island, situated just off the west coast of France and conveniently criss-crossed by a network of cycle paths. Abundant in casual charm, the island is particularly popular with holidaying Parisians.

With salt marshes and many miles of shoreline, the unique landscapes of Ile de Ré are a real draw. The island is ideal for anyone who wants to take a family cycling holiday in Europe, as there are plenty of traffic-free cycle paths. The fact that the landscape is fairly flat also makes it a suitable choice for children.

So what does Ile de Ré have to offer? Think unique boutiques, beautiful French villages and a top-notch food scene. Inland you’ll also find woodland, vineyards and meadows. There’s also around 100 kilometres of family-friendly cycling routes to help you discover it. Even at the highest elevation of the island you’re less than 20 metres above sea level.

Perfect for a first family cycling holiday in France?!

We certainly adored spending time on the Ile de Ré as a family. The only thing to be aware of is that the Ile de Ré is not undiscovered – you won’t be alone on the bike paths (remember those Parisians?!)! We’d suggest getting your family ride in early; before 9 am each day you’ll often find you have the paths all to yourselves. But even if you prefer a later start, it’s no problem, there’ll just be more people out and about.

The whole island has nice bike paths suitable for an easy cycling holiday, but we particularly liked the area west of Saint Martin de Ré. Cycle routes around Ars en Ré, Loix and Les Portes en Ré will take you on a magical journey between the salt marshes and the sea.

A final tip: if you’re driving to the Ile de Ré from the UK, consider an overnight stop in Nantes. A trip to les Machines de l’île will be unforgettable for you and your kids.

Loire, France

Suggested route: Tours to Tours loop

Great for: UNESCO World Heritage French chateaux

A classic option for family cycling holidays in France is a trip to the Loire region. This area is home to the La Loire à Vélo, an 800 kilometre route passing through the Garden of France and the Valley of the Kings. The route connects the heart of France to the Atlantic, and is also part of the Eurovélo 6 route, which stretches for some 3,600 kilometres.

Of course we’re not suggesting that you cover the whole 800 kilometres during your family break in the Loire!

We know from experience that easy cycling holidays in Europe are what you need when you have kids in tow. Fortunately, it’s possible to experience the fine French cuisine, rolling vineyards, unspoiled villages and towns, fertile farmland and untamed rivers without covering hundreds of kilometres.

The route we suggest is a loop that starts and ends in Tours with a midpoint in Amboise. This allows you to follow the impressive cycle paths that trace the banks of the Cher, the Indre and the Vienne as well as the mighty Loire.

A roll call of UNESCO-listed chateaux also awaits. Highlights include the castles at Amboise,  Azay-le-Rideau, Chenonceau, Langeais and Villandry. You can also drop into the cellar doors en route so that adults can sample a drop or two of the local vintages, and visit the troglodyte caves at Souzay-Champigny and Turquant.

Danube, Austria

Suggested route:  Danube Cycle Path from Linz to Vienna

Great for:  Family attractions, history, food and nature

Family cycling holidays in Austria are another option for active sorts who love to explore. The Danube Cycle Path is the main draw here, as adults and kids alike can discover the area away from vehicles and at their leisure. The entire Danube Cycle Path encompasses eight European nations in all (albeit you might not want to do all eight at once when you’ve got the kids with you!).

Some say that this spacious cycle path is in fact underused, which is interesting given it’s also one of the better known cycle routes of Europe. There’s a reason for its reputation; it’s idyllic, and also ideal for family biking vacations.

There are lots of segments you could ride along the Danube, but for family cycling tours a great option is between Linz and Vienna. This takes you to Enns, the oldest city in Austria and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Wachau in the Danube Valley before ending in romantic Vienna.

This riverside route is flat throughout, making it the perfect choice for a family cycling trip through Austria. The destinations en route allow the whole family to experience a Roman circular route tracing the former border of an ancient civilisation, visit a waterpark, delve into Celtic history at the Heuneburg hillfort in Hundersingen, sample Sachertorte, ride the famous giant ferris wheel in Vienna – and much more.

Via Verdes near Girona, Spain

Suggested route:  Via Verdes (AKA Greenways)

Great for:  Peaceful off-road riding and beautiful countryside

The Girona region on Spain’s Costa Brava has serious cycling pedigree. The now-notorious Lance Armstrong used to train here, numerous prominent cyclists are based in the Girona area and David Millar has a residence here.

So with such an illustrious roll call of famous cycling names, is Girona suitable for easy family cycling holidays in Spain?

You bet. It’s easy to reach from the UK and Europe, offers plenty of bike-friendly places to stay for all budgets and offers peaceful, well-maintained roads and cycle routes.

If you’re with family and prefer to avoid being on the road, check out the Via Verdes for your cycling holiday in Spain. Though many of the popular cycling routes around the Girona area involve high elevations, the Via Verdes comprise around 125 kilometres of cycle paths created from now-defunct railway lines.

Sample the highlights by taking a ride from Llagostera to Sant Feliu de Guíxols, where there’s a smart marina and a curving, sandy bay. This route is around 20 kilometres (or 12.5 miles) long. It forms part of the Girona to Sant Feliu de Guíxols segment.

The other sectors are Ripoli to Olot, Olot to Girona and Palamós to Palafrugell. If you do decide to embark on the Girona to Sant Feliu de Guíxols segment, then do take some time to explore the city first. Park de la Devesa in the city centre is lovely, and well-shaded too thanks to the presence of over 2,500 plane trees.

Lake Constance, Germany

Suggested route: The Lake Constance Cycle Path

Great for:  Summer swims and intriguing islands

Lake Constance is so big that it’s bordered by three European countries. You can travel along its shores in Austria or Switzerland, but we recommend heading to Germany for the best family biking experience. You just cannot beat family cycling holidays in Germany spent by the water, especially in summer when taking a cooling dip will hopefully be in order.

The Lake Constance Cycle Path traces the entire 260 kilometres (or 160 miles) around the edge of the water. Dotted with lidos for summer swims, the kids shouldn’t complain too much about getting hot and sweaty as there will soon be a lido to jump into!

The Lake Constance Cycle Path is very well maintained, and is suitable even for absolute beginners. It’s also well signposted, so you shouldn’t have any trouble in working out where you’re headed.

The best bits of the German sector include Mainau island, a 45-acre plot covered in flowers on Lake Constance. There’s also a butterfly house and a baroque palace here. Reichenau Island with its Benedictine monastery, Meersburg Castle and Lindau with its lighthouse and harbour are further highlights.

If Germany isn’t enough, you could add spots like Bregenz in Austria and Stein am Rhein in Switzerland to your itinerary. Visiting these – as well as stunning Alpine views – would make for a beautiful, if packed, week-long family cycling vacation.

Great Bike Tour of the Baltics (fully guided from Vilnius to Tallinn 2024)

The group was small and we all became friends and continue to communicate even after our trip. The biking was pleasant and mostly on bike paths. The area was very historically interesting and our guide was amazing: he taught us so much of the history and also interesting things about all the things we passed and stopped to see. Hotels were perfectly adequate, and the food was better than I expected (I pictured beets, cabbage and potatoes, and while there was plenty of that, there were also wonderful salads and other dishes). The tour whet my appetite for more!

Baltic Bike Tour: Vilnius to Tallinn (self-guided supported)

Would have preferred one less ride on the island and a full day in Tallinn. The maps were pretty good for the unguided portion but on day 4 we could have gone a little farther by bike and caught a ferry that unloaded right by the hotel. We followed directions and caught first ferry and then had a mile and half ride through city to get to hotel. Driver was very good, very friendly, and very helpful. Rides were very nice in national parks. Would also look to add more villages. Interesting to make stops and meet locals

Well organized, excellent group leaders. Some confusion communicating between Tour Radar and Exodus Travels but was straightened out.

Overall it was a good experience. the trour was excellent, however the organisers made some inappropriate decisions. they tried to book those of us who had paid single supplements into sharing rooms. BAD! they also moved us from one hotel to another when it was an off day which totally interrupted our experience. When they moved us in Kotor, they moved the single people to a hotel 5.5 km away from the town which meant we were stuck there! BAD. the tour guide was also poor at communicating and told us things that were not accurate at all. Communication was also last minute and did not give us time to adjust our expectations. I did not trust what we had paid for and what we got The route also changed according to the outlined provided at the start, so there were also disappointments with the distance and climbing cycled. POOR.

Fantastic trip. Hotels were tremendous, especially the meal in the hotel in Saint Florent-le-Vieil. Maps were good though I used my app Bikemap.net, to act as a Sat Nav. A couple of hiccups with luggaeew but minor in comparison with holiday organisation. Would certainly recommend.

Although the "biking" was not on my bucket list (was talked into the trip by our brother/sister-in-law), but we had a very great time! Mindaugas was a great guide, and our driver was also great. The hotels were fine, the food was excellent, and the biking was better than I'd expected! Our fellow companions were delightful. The history and tours of the Baltic countries was wonderful. It would have been nice to have had a microphone hook-up during our guided walking tours in order to hear all the information. It would have been nice to be able to buy t-shirts (Mindaugas wore a few) that displayed a map of the tour. I think it would have been nice if we could have ordered them before or after the trip. Is it possible to do so now? Otherwise, I'd never done anything like this before, and may do it again at some point.

Sasa Tour Guide and Andro the driver were great. They took care of the group with their jovial attitude and ensured that individual's needs were met. They provided easy to follow directions and kept the group together. There were occasions when things would have gone wrong but Sasa and Andro ensured that they are there on every step along the way to make it trouble-free and enjoyable experience. I highly recommend intrepid tours and would consider future tours through Intrepid.

The right stages with children

The perfect cycle tour with children starts with the careful selection of the route. Of course, the children’s age and experience with cycling also plays a role. Excessive demands on children can quickly lead to frustration and stress for parents, two things that have absolutely no place in a cycling holiday with children. That is why we at Eurobike pay particular attention to the route selection, the length of the stages and the children’s suitability to the individual cycle paths. So nothing stands in the way of a carefree holiday with even the smallest family members!

Route selection

In order to avoid being overwhelmed, the route should in principle be rather flat and have little or no inclines. Small inclines can create a sense of achievement in parents and children, but they should be the exception. River bike paths like the  Danube Cycle Path , the  Moselle Cycle Path  and the  Adige Cycle Path  are a good choice. These naturally run downhill and are particularly scenic. But other routes that run flat or even continuously downhill are very suitable for a cycle tour with children. Good examples are the family-friendly  Lake Constance Cycle Path  and the  Alpe Adria Cycle Path .

Cycle paths suitable for children

Not only the natural condition of the route is important. When cycling with children, there is another important factor: road traffic. A lot of traffic leads to insecurity and quickly reduces the fun of cycling. Therefore, you should definitely pay attention to the course of the route. In recent years the number and quality of cycle paths has improved enormously. In many regions of Europe there are special cycle paths for cyclists away from the roads, such as our  family trip along the Danube  or our  family trip along the Adige in South Tyrol , which can be cycled with children without any danger. Away from the cycle paths, you should pay attention to a route with little traffic. But roads with a little traffic are also easy to navigate with children.

Length of the stage

In addition to the nature of the terrain, the distance of the stages is also important. The further the distance covered, the longer the time on the bike and the more strenuous the day becomes. Breaks are particularly important on a cycle tour with children and, in addition to the variety, also provide a boost of energy for the rest of the tour. You should always plan enough time for fun adventures along the route.

The length of the stage should be chosen according to the experience of cycling and additional activities. A stage length of up to 45 kilometres can be done with experienced children. But shorter routes of around 15 kilometres or more also have their appeal, provided the supporting activities are right. On multi-day cycle tours, it is nice if the stage length varies on a daily basis on order to allow for relaxation on individual days.

A day break filled with other activities is a great way to make your cycling holiday with children even more varied. An average stage length of 30 to 35 kilometres per day has proven itself for active families.

1/10 Amsterdam South, Holland

Amsterdam has 513km of dedicated cycle paths and several bike-only bridges with around 10,000 bicycles parked around Amsterdam Central Station each day. A great half-day ride into the leafy suburbs leads through the lesser-known Amsterdam Zuid district, visiting the stately Apollolaan area and the verdant public space of Vondelpark. 2/10 Bruges, Belgium

While WWI cycle routes are proving popular for families with older children this year given the centenary commemoration, the 29km daytrip around Bruges makes for a faourite shorter option. The Bruges trail starts from the central station and leads out to the charming West Flanders town of Damme, following the canal along a flat, well-signposted route. After lunch in a Damme café, head back into historic Bruges for a Belgian beer.

3/10 Somerset, England

Yorkshire may be grabbing the cycling headlines this summer with Le Grand Depart of the Tour de France but there are plenty of shorter family routes around England. One of the most atmospheric is the traffic-free Strawberry Line along the old railway route from Clevedon to Cranmore. With a series of spurs around the village of Cheddar, it’s an easy-going eight miles with plenty to visit along the way, notably Glastonbury Tor, Wells Cathedral and the Cheddar Caves.

4/10  River Danube, Austria

For older children (secondary school-age onwards) Austria’s Danube Cycle Path may be an ambitious 225km but it cuts a delightfully scenic swathe through the bucolic backroads of rural Austria. Leading from Linz to Vienna, the traffic-free trail hugs the River Danube’s banks via the historic hilltop town of Wallsee, the Habsburg town of Grein and wine-growing region of Wachau. Book a package to transfer luggage ahead each and count on cycling 25km per day.

5/10 Bornholm, Denmark

Copenhagen may be one of Europe’s most cycle-friendly cities but smart Scandinavians escape each summer to the Baltic island of Bornholm – about 30 minutes from Copenhagen airport, or a ferry ride from Sweden. The island is ideal for chilled-out cycling with a craggy coastline, white-sand beaches and mystic rock formations to explore. The entire coastal loop is 105km.

6/10 Tenerife, Spain

Tour de France cycling hero Bradley Wiggins trained on the island of Tenerife but there are plenty of more leisurely trails for families. The north of the island has several routes with the Puerto de La Cruz loop great for all ages. It leads from Martianez beach to the Botanic Gardens with stops for refreshments en route. More adventurous is the trail through the Corona Forestal Natural Park and the hills around La Esperanza.

7/10 Brittany, France

For children starting to learn French at school, a leisurely summer saunter through the beautiful Breton countryside is a great introduction. Follow the scenic canal towpaths of the Nantes-Brest canal from St Brieuc – three hours by TGV from Paris. You can dip in and out of 20km sections along the route each day (especially if you send bags ahead), taking time to linger around the chateau in Josselin, or the marketplace in Pontivy.

8/10 Venetia, Italy

For a gentle introduction to la dolce vita, a self-guided trip around the Venetian countryside combines circular cycling routes and back-to-nature lifestyle with a chance to stay at a family-run agriturismo (farm-hotel). Combine a leisurely day excursion criss-crossing the valley floor on quiet country lanes with days off to visit regional highlights, such as nearby Venice, Vicenza and Padua. Great short rides for younger children include the 5km circular cycle around Lake Fimon and the village of Costozza with its network of caves set amongst vineyards.

With more than 70,000 km of cycle trails and 200 long-distance cycle routes, Germany has cycling for all ages. Riverside routes are particularly popular with both the 230km Ruhr Valley Cycle Route from Winterberg to Duisburg, and the 640km Mecklenburg Lakes Cycle Route from Lüneburg

to Wolgast boasting water-based activities along the way. The latter is particularly scenic with sections through the Mecklenburg Lake District and Müritz National Park. Dip in then transfer ahead before finishing at a Baltic beach resort.

10/10 graubünden, switzerland.

The Alpine ski resort of Flims takes on a new life each summer as a cycling haven. It’s home to a mountain-biking centre with over 330km of waymarked trails for all levels, plus a rope-swinging centre in the forest. One of the best trails for primary-school-age children is the Flims Round Trip (route 245) from Laax Staderas via refreshments in Conn, which runs 11.2km through the forest and boats view of the Upper Rhine gorge. Finish with a dip in nearby Lake Cauma.

5 Great European Bike Tours for Families

Sightseeing in Europe can get tiresome for kids, but add the excitement of bicycling from place to place and the camaraderie of traveling with others, and suddenly even your teenagers will be eagerly getting up early in the morning to join each day’s programs.

Cultural immersion and history naturally come with the territory on these slow-travel journeys. The organizers carefully curate the best of their destinations, letting parents off the hook when it comes to planning and managing logistics. Most trips have multiple guides, so while one guide is racing the kids up a hill for a gelato, another might be stopping for an aperitif with the parents. And while most of the guided trips are pretty flexible and freewheeling, there are also self-guided options for families who want the logistical support of a tour, minus the schedules.

We think the best family bike trips are big on off-road and tranquil backroad routes, kid-oriented learning activities, and family friendly accommodations, with a pool, beach or space to run around. With that in mind, here, in no particular order, are five of our favorites:

1. Ciclismo Classico’s “Fun in the Sardinian Sun” – Sardinia, Italy The combination of beaches, cultural immersion and historic sites dating back to the heydays of the Phoenician and Roman civilizations make the seven-day “Fun in the Sardinian Sun” itinerary from Italian bike tour pioneer Ciclismo Classico ideal for families. No worries if you’re not avid cyclists — there’s a choice of routes with varying mileage on most days, and a “sag wagon” to hop into for an air-conditioned boost up a big hill or a break.

Sardinia is one of Italy’s off-the-beaten-path treasures. The second largest island in the Mediterranean, unspoiled Sardinia is home to four million sheep and well under two million people. The trip takes full advantage of its rocky, cove-scalloped coastline and long stretches of pristine sandy beaches.

Among the highlights are a kid-oriented visit to the Phoenician museum, stops to swim and snorkel in pristine coves, and boat and canoe trips. You’ll also visit small fishing villages and learn about the “mattanza,” a traditional communal method of fishing for giant bluefin tuna during their annual spring migration.

Unlike most bike tours, which change hotels almost every night, Ciclismo Classico family trips try to minimize the moves to avoid the stress of packing everyone’s luggage every morning. This also makes opting out of a ride easy if someone isn’t interested, and makes the trip welcoming to non-cyclist travelers. The Sardinia route sets up loop rides from two lovely hotels, one with a pool and the second, a resort situated along a lovely white sand beach.

Butterfield & Robinson’s “Normandy Family Biking Tour” – Normandy, France From Viking settlements and the Battle of Hastings in 1066 to the D-Day landing during World War II, Normandy is filled with history for families to discover together. But it’s the enticing separate activities — the afternoons that kids (suggested ages of eight and up) spend horseback riding, racing quads and sand-surfing on the beach, while their parents enjoy leisurely afternoons of cycling, sightseeing and kicking back to sip Calvados — that really set the five-day Normandy Family Biking tour from Butterfield & Robinson apart.

With more than 300 miles of dedicated bike paths and long stretches of flat terrain, Normandy seems made for cycling. D-Day gets a lot of attention on this tour, as it should. A visit to the compact Invasion Museum at Arromanches introduces families to the geography, challenges and strategies. Together, families deepen their understanding by visiting Omaha Beach, Pointe du Hoc, the American cemetery and other sites, and on the last evening, have the chance to dine with a member of the French Resistance.

Other shared experiences include biking through the lush Norman countryside to a private chateau for a grand country lunch, complete with two local specialties, cider and Calvados, and a bike ride through the wetlands of Vernier, known for its thatched roof cottages, to Honfleur, where impressionists Claude Monet and Eugene Louis Boudin found inspiration. In this corner of Spain, modern crafts people and artists work in centuries-old walled cities, and new resorts sit side-by-side with traditional fishing villages. The trip starts in Girona, a vibrant, ancient city known for its cuisine, street festival ambience and well-preserved pedestrian-only Old Town.

Cycling highlights include the Vias Verdes, a rails-to-trails route from Girona to the Mediterranean Sea, a boardwalk trail along the beach, the scenic Cap De Creus and Dali’s summer home in Cadaques. The journey ends in Figueres, Dali’s birthplace and home to the world-famous Dali Museum. Family Lake Constance Bike Tour

Follow a trail of excellently maintained cycle paths alongside the murmuring shores of Europe's largest freshwater lake on our Family Lake Constance Bike Tour . Not only will you be pedalling on cycle paths away from the roads for most of the way, but the cycling is almost entirely flat with short daily distances, ideal if you have small travelling companions.

Plus, if you're hearing the odd 'are we there yet' from the back of your peloton, you'll find plenty to keep the kids entertained away from the cycle paths. Break up your hours in the saddle and stop off for ice cream, let your children play in the many parks and playgrounds or splash about in the lake. You can also take a cable car trip up to a wildlife park, enjoy a day at the Ravensburger Theme Park and visit the Zeppelin Museum Friedrichshafen - all included in the tour price!

Germany  is a particularly good country for family cycling because of its vast network of cycle paths - over 70,000 km of well-signposted routes! One of our favourite routes in the whole country is our Moselle Cycle Path Leisurely Bike Tour where you'll enjoy gentle riverside cycling along the quiet banks of the Moselle River between Trier and Koblenz.

This is a great location to create fond memories as a family, with plenty of places to stop by the banks of the river for a picnic and swim in one of the many lidos. There are also plenty of activities to keep kids entertained along the way including water parks, mini-golf and a forest adventure trail.

Freedom Treks' Catherine, Saul and their son James also went on this tour in 2020 and loved it. One of the revelations for Catherine was the FollowMe bike that their then 5-year-old James used. Catherine loved the security of being able to choose between letting James cycle on his own and attaching him to her or Saul's back wheel.

This pleasant route will lead you beyond the stunning blue waters of Lake Garda towards the famous canals of Venice. With longer distances to cycle every day, this tour is great for older children with a little more energy in their legs.

Despite the distance, the cycling is still blissfully flat and cooling off with a swim in Lake Garda's clear waters makes a welcome halfway treat. The difficulty level of this tour is flexible too. If your kids are up for a challenge, take them on a more undulating route via Caldaro Lake. If the daily cycles become a bit too much, it's easy to skip a stage with a picturesque journey in a cool train carriage.

Well-sign-posted, flat and traffic-free cycle paths allow you to relax in the saddle and turn your gaze to the beauty of the Austrian countryside. The train journey to Vienna on the last day of your tour will shorten an otherwise lengthy route and give those legs a well-earned rest.

I never learned how to ride a bike.

Sure, I went through the motions of trying when I was 7 or 8 years old, but the skill never stuck. I suppose the balance needed to steer and maneuver a contraption with two wheels has always evaded me.

But you don’t need balance (or really any skills beyond sitting and wearing a helmet) to take a spin on t he Sunburst’s new 17-mile railbike route , which launched this month. Thursday through Sunday, riders can now book two-seat railbikes to explore the citrus and avocado groves on train tracks that run through the Santa Clara River Valley.

It costs $249 to book a two-seater bike for a three-and-a-half-hour ride, but local residents of Santa Paula, Fillmore and Piru are offered a discounted rate of $186. In Northern California, Mendocino Railway’s steep pricing was criticized back in 2020, when companies increased River Fox Train and Skunk Train tickets by nearly 500% to $250. But the worth of a railbike experience, I suppose, is in the eye of the beholder.

Searching for citrus in Santa Paula

To avoid rush hour traffic, I decided to book the Saturday afternoon ride for my partner and me. The Santa Clara River Valley is about 60 miles outside of Los Angeles, so we left the house before 11 a.m. and got back to L.A. around dusk.

The drive north is scenic, especially with all the greenery from this winter’s heavy rain. Once we arrived in Fillmore, we also spotted the only Jamba - Wingstop combo shop I have ever seen.

On the tracks of the train depot, we spotted seven go-kart-like apparatuses with big red wheels. Each railbike had two seatbelts, two bright green helmets and one shallow basket that could hold small bags and snacks throughout the ride.

Bike-adjacent inventions that roll atop train tracks have been known by many different names — handcar , draisine , kalamazoo and velocipede are just a few — since they first cropped up around the 1860s. And though these devices were originally made for railroad maintenance, different companies have found ways to turn railbikes into fun, outdoor adventures for train lovers.

Robert Jason Pinoli, the president and CEO of Mendocino Railway , said the company’s electric railbikes — which function similarly to electric bikes — are currently patent pending. (Mendocino Railway operates the Sunburst and its railbikes.)

“We didn’t invent the railbike,” he said. “What we did invent, though, was the technology to propel these rail bikes beyond pedal power, the electric assist.”

As we settled into our seats, the guides explained how to use the bike’s handbrake, five gears and thumb throttle, which allows you to move without pedaling. The person on the right side of each bike is in charge of setting the bike’s pace and keeping a safe distance from the railbike just ahead of them, since the bikes move as one unit with a guide in the front and a guide at the back of the group.

“If you want to make the pedaling effortless, you can do it,” Pinoli said. “If you want to pedal away, you can turn it down to zero and pedal your heart out.”

As we buckled up and set out on our journey, we immediately encountered our first intersection. Pinoli shared that the guides are able to input a code that activates railroad crossing warning gates before the bikes approach each road. The tracks for the Sunburst’s route cross several active roads including CA-126, which made our line of railbikes quite the spectacle for drivers as they waited for our gates to retract.

17 miles in the great outdoors, no effort required

There are around 140,000 miles of train tracks in the United States alone — enough track to loop the circumference of Earth more than five times. Most of them are used for utilitarian purposes such as transporting coal, lumber or rocks, but some have been restored and repurposed for entertainment and enjoyment.

In this case, Mendocino Railway proposed a plan to restore the Santa Paula Branch Line, a 32-mile railway corridor that was built in 1887 and is now owned by the Ventura County Transportation Commission.

“This line was originally built by the Southern Pacific Railroad to transport citrus out of the area,” Pinoli said. “We took over operation of the line in 2022, did a bunch of infrastructure work to the railroad, and we are now at the phase where we can actually start running railbikes over it.”

Mendocino Railway’s other tourism trains and railbikes include the popular Skunk Train in Fort Bragg and the monthly Boba Tea Train on the River Fox L ine in West Sacramento. Eventually, Pinoli said, this Sunburst Train route will include “excursion-based passenger trains” that center around food and beverages local to Ventura County.

“We’re surrounded by lemons, by oranges, and [want] to embrace the produce that’s in this area and incorporate that into the train,” Pinoli said. “So it wouldn’t be a stretch to see maybe orange- or lemon-flavored citrus drinks, like if you want a margarita on the train we can squeeze the fruit for you fresh. Maybe chips and guacamole.”

As we pedaled our way out of Santa Paula, the homes and Del Tacos began to disappear. After about 15 minutes we arrived at Prancer’s Farm , where we had just enough time to browse either the farm store or the petting zoo.

We chose petting goats and pigs over fresh strawberries, growing especially attached to a tiny goat my partner named Denzel (because Denzel Washington is also, famously, the G.O.A.T. ).

Once we left Prancer’s, the views were especially beautiful. Suddenly the landscape was split into four layers: grass, citrus trees, mountains and an enticingly cloud-speckled sky. From afar, we even got a glimpse of some large patches of bright orange flowers.

Throughout the ride we passed over small bridges, modest waterfalls and a few bumpy spots. Most of the ride, our bike was set to the third gear, which brought us to about the speed limit with little to no peddling.

“We are restricted to a speed of 15 miles per hour on this line,” Pinoli said. “But these bikes can go anywhere from 25 to 30 miles an hour.”

Tourism railbikes, similar to the ones that Mendocino Railway runs, seemed to find their stride in 2020, as COVID-19 restrictions forced many people outdoors.

“It gives people the ability to get outside and reconnect with friends,” Pinoli said. “During the throes of COVID, we couldn’t build these fast enough. They were in such huge demand.”

Take me home, country (rail)roads

The appeal of riding on a railbike is similar to driving a convertible — you get to feel the wind and sun on your face — but traveling on a train track also means that nobody has to steer. And you don’t have to be a train enthusiast or an avid biker to enjoy the experience.

When we arrived at the turnaround point, where we were supposed to stop and have a picnic lunch, it became clear that the route hadn’t totally been finished.

“Our picnic stop is abbreviated because there’s a bridge to the east that [was] washed out with the big storms in January, so we can’t cross over the river to get into Fillmore,” Pinoli said.

Once the storm damage is repaired, Pinoli said they’re hoping to pair with local vendors who could provide food at that halfway point. But because the picnics weren’t set up yet, I packed sandwiches (from a personal Culver City favorite, Monroe Place ) that we ate on the ride back.

Pinoli added that they’re hoping to expand railbike tours beyond four days a week and eventually start running food-and-beverage-centered passenger trains along with the railbikes and freight.

By the time we got back to Santa Paula, I was chilly enough that I was looking forward to getting back into my car. And even though I did minimal pedaling, I felt a sense of accomplishment when I returned my helmet to the seat.

Generally, I’m not particularly inclined to shell out more than $200 for an afternoon of biking, but I can understand the appeal for train lovers and people who enjoy marveling at the natural Southern California landscapes.

“Not to be cheesy, but I low-key get what they were talking about in ‘America the Beautiful,’” my partner said as we gazed at the mountains. I let them revel in that feeling for a minute before informing them that ‘America the Beautiful’ was actually inspired by Pikes Peak in Colorado.
