Anchorage is a perfect home base for these 10 day trips

Locals like to say that Anchorage is only 30 minutes from Alaska: wedged between 5000ft peaks and an inlet filled with salmon and whales, the Big Apple of the north is unlike any other city. Indeed, Anchorage makes a prime home base from which to explore both Alaska's small town charms and big, cinematic scenery one day trip at a time.

From artsy, mural-strewn 'bergs to glacier hikes, from stunning lakes to cozy taverns, from fun road trips to train rides, you might be surprised to see just how much of Alaska is accessible from Anchorage. These are our ten favorite day trips.

Editor's note: During COVID-19, please check the latest travel restrictions before planning any trip and always follow government health advice. Events may be subject to change.

Rafting at Spencer Glacier, Chugach National Forest, Alaska.

1. Spencer Glacier

Encircled by mighty peaks brimming with glaciers, Girdwood is a laid-back antidote to the bustle of Anchorage. Home to the luxurious Alyeska Ski Resort and the fabled  Girdwood Forest Fair , Girdwood is a dog-and-kid kind of town, with excellent hiking, fine restaurants and a feel-good vibe that will have you staying longer than anticipated.

Getting there:  Ride the Alaska Railroad to Spencer Glacier, where you can hike a 3.4-mile trail to the face of the glacier or join a guided walk with a United States Forestry Service Ranger. Whistle Stop hikers have from 1:25pm to 4:40pm to complete the hike and meet the train for the return.

2. Turnagain Arm

The drive out of Anchorage along Turnagain Arm is well worth the price of a train ticket or rental car. Sure, it might be quicker (and probably cheaper) to fly, but staying on the ground will make you appreciate just how close to the wilderness Anchorage really is.

Turnagain Arm Trail , an easy 11-mile hike, begins at Potter Trailhead (Mile 115). Originally used by Alaska Natives, the convenient route has since been used by Russian trappers, gold miners and happy hikers. The trail, with a mountain goat’s view of Turnagain Arm, alpine meadows and beluga whales, can also be accessed at the McHugh Creek (Mile 112), Rainbow (Mile 108) and Windy (Mile 107).

Meanwhile,  Potter Marsh  (Mile 117) was created in 1916, when railroad construction dammed several streams. You can stretch your legs along the 1500ft boardwalk while spying on ducks, songbirds, grebes and gulls.

Bird Ridge Trail  starts with a wheelchair-accessible loop at Mile 102, then continues with a steep, popular and well-marked path that reaches a 3500ft overlook at Mile 2; this is a traditional turnaround point for folks in a hurry. Or you can continue another 4 miles to higher peaks and even better views from sunny Bird Ridge, a top spot for rock climbing.

Getting there: Turnagain Arm is just south of Anchorage and can be reached on the scenic Seward Highway – a worthwhile day trip in and of itself.

BTalaska-railroad-between-seward-and-anchorage-07201407-215811.jpg

Perched on the edge of Resurrection Bay, Seward offers out-of-this-world views of water, sky, mountain and forest, and is easily accessed by road, boat and rail. Because of its size (and its history as a railroad port), there is plenty of nightlife and there are lots of good restaurants in the picturesque old-time downtown area.

Slurp local oysters backed with champagne at The Cookery or cozy up by the massive wood stove at Resurrect Art Coffee House Gallery. The Lost Lake Trail offers gorgeous views of Seward from alpine meadows. Stoney Creek Canopy Adventures gives you a unique perspective of Seward from its treetop ziplines. Or you can simply stroll the town and admire the many murals – go to the Painted Whale to get a tour led by one of the artists.

Meanwhile, the 127 miles of the Seward Hwy is all Scenic Byway, and there are plenty of turnoffs for gawking and snapping photos. The mileposts along the highway show distances from Seward (Mile 0) to Anchorage (Mile 127). The Turnagain Arm section of this road is from Anchorage to just past the Portage Glacier turnoff (Mile 79).

Getting there: It's only two and a half hours to Seward from Anchorage by car or four by train, but if either seems too long to spend on a day trip, you can also fly – though that's the more expensive option.

4. Kenai Fjords National Park

Kenai Fjords National Park  was created in 1980 to protect 587,000 acres of Alaska’s most awesome, impenetrable wilderness. Crowning the park is the massive Harding Ice Field; from it, countless tidewater glaciers pour down, carving the coast into dizzying fjords. Lucky for visitors, the park is free. The majority of visitors either take a quick trip to Exit Glacier’s face or splurge on a tour-boat cruise along the coast.

From the  Exit Glacier Nature Center , the Outwash Plain Trail is an easy three-quarter-mile walk to the glacier’s alluvial plain. The Edge of the Glacier Trail leaves the first loop and climbs steeply to an overlook at the side of the glacier before returning. Both trails make for a short hike that will take one or two hours; you can return along the half-mile nature trail through cottonwood forest, alder thickets and old glacial moraines before emerging at the ranger station.

Getting there: It's two and a half hours from Anchorage to Kenai Fjords via AK-1 S and State Hwy 9.

Hanging Valley - Chugach State Park

5. Eagle River

As you drive out of Anchorage, you’ll soon parallel Knik Arm, while the Chugach Mountains stay to your right. Small communities dot either side of the road, but Eagle River and Eklutna offer the best access to the mountains. Both communities are worthy of a day trip from Anchorage, but to escape the hustle of the city, you can use these small towns as a base for exploring Anchorage and the wilds around it.

Eagle River has something of a city center; the Eagle River Town Square is off Business Blvd and has just about every business you’ll need. The  Bear Paw Festival  is worth the trip just for the Slippery Salmon Olympics, which involves racing with a Hula Hoop, serving tray and, of course, a large dead fish. Most people, however, come here for the drive down Eagle River Rd or to take a hike.

Getting there:  Eagle River is less than half an hour from Anchorage along Glenn Highway / AK-1 North.

Visitors dining inside the Swiftwater Seafood Cafe, Whittier, Alaska, USA

6. Whittier

Whittier is a wonderfully weird Cold War anachronism set on the edge of some sublime coastal wilderness where rugged fjords dispatch tumbling glaciers into Prince William Sound. Even by Alaskan standards, this is a bizarre outpost. The “town” is dominated by two Cold War military installations: the hopelessly ruined Buckner building and the equally incongruous Begich Towers, a 14-story skyscraper that houses most of Whittier’s population.

Activities in the area include following a marked historical walk around the spooky monuments to Whittier’s Cold War past. You can also take a deluxe boat cruise past a profusion of Prince William Sound’s glaciers, or head uphill on the Portage Pass Trail for an immediate wilderness fix and great views at this trail two miles outside of Whittier.

Getting there:  Arriving in Whittier from Anchorage after a spectacular ride on the Alaska Railroad  alongside the waters of Turnagain Arm is a special experience.

Russian-orthodox Eklutna Cemetery with its colorful graves and spirit houses, Alaska. Image shot 07/2017. Exact date unknown.

In one direction, just west of the Eklutna Lake Rd exit at Mile 26.5 of the Glenn Highway, you have the 350-year-old Alaska Native village of Eklutna, home to  Eklutna Village Historical Park . In the other direction is the gorgeous 7-mile-long Eklutna Lake, which offers lots of recreation opportunities, including kayaking, biking and hiking on 27 miles of trails.  It’s worth every minute once the sky suddenly opens, unveiling a stunning valley with a glacier-and-peak-ringed lake, the largest body of water in Chugach State Park, at its center.

Getting there:  Eklutna Lake is 10 miles east of the highway on Eklutna Lake Road.

Nagley's store, Talkeetna, Alaska, USA.

8. Talkeetna

Downtown Talkeetna is a strip of gift shops, guide services, restaurants and old-school saloons. And it's awesome: artsy, playful, infused with community spirit, but also self-aware enough to market itself to the thousands who come here seeking a view of Denali and a dip in the funky energy that permeates the mountain's main climbing base.

The  Talkeetna Historical Society Museum  is a great introduction to the area's indigenous and frontier past. So is the Belle's Interpretive Trail, which strolls past interpretive signs laying out local history. The Talkeetna Riverfront Park affords great views of Alaska's scenery, not to mention fish doing their best acrobatic routines.

If you're here for the outdoors, roll down the local waterways with Talkeetna's knowledgeable river guides – if you're lucky, you'll get a view of Denali from the Chulitna River. You can also hire an Alaska Nature Guide for trips to local lakes or even a trek into the bush by plane. Zipline tours are available in the area, as is dogsledding and salmon fishing charters.

Getting there:  Talkeetna is just two hours from Anchorage via AK-1 S and State Hwy 9, and can be reached by car or bus.

Filled with old farming-related buildings, Palmer at times feels more like the Midwest than Alaska, except that it’s ringed by dramatic mountains. Many downtown venues exude 1930s ambience, with antique furniture and wood floors. For those who want to skip the city hassles and high prices of Anchorage, Palmer is an excellent option with just enough choices in lodging, restaurants and sights to keep you satisfied for a day trip or a weekend getaway.

Nearby Palmer, the town of Knik boasts a rich sled-dog history, since it's the home of many Alaskan mushers (and checkpoint 4 on the race route). For more information about this uniquely Alaskan race, stop in at Iditarod Trail Headquarters. Outside, you can get a short sled-dog ride (around US$10, from 9am to 5pm) on a wheeled dogsled.

Getting there:  Palmer is just under an hour from Anchorage via AK-1 North or about an hour and a half by train.

A man riding his mountain bike on the Palmer Valley Road near Hope, Alaska on a sunny summer day in South-central Alaska

Hope has beautiful views of Turnagain Arm, a quaint and historic downtown, wonderful gold-rush-era relics, and incredible camping and hiking opportunities. Life here moves a little slower. It's close enough to Anchorage to attract a weekend city crowd, but tucked away enough to stay tiny and quiet. It's authentic, pioneering, friendly and esoteric. Most tourist services close October to May.

Sixmile Creek  is serious white water, with thrilling – and dangerous – rapids through deep gorges that survivors describe as ‘the best roller coaster in Alaska.’ The first two canyons are rated Class IV; the third canyon is a big, bad Class V. It's a four- to five-hour round-trip. Dress warmly and bring extra clothes.

The Hope area also provides numerous opportunities for the amateur panner, including a 20-acre claim that the US Forest Service (USFS) has set aside near the Resurrection Pass trailhead for recreational mining.

Getting there: The Seward Highway will get you to Hope in about two hours.

Anchorage Day Trips, Tours & Outdoor Adventures

Home » Tours » City-Based Day Tours » Anchorage

Anchorage is the starting point for many Alaska vacations and tours. With a wide selection of day tours, easy to access to tour excursions and outdoor activities, the city of Anchorage is the perfect anchor for your trip to Alaska.

Located on Cook Inlet and surrounded by mountains and wilderness, the city of Anchorage in Alaska is a unique combination of wilderness and modern city life. Alaska’s largest city with its trademark slogan “ Big Wild Life ” will treat you to a variety of museums, dining options, and the shopping you might expect in any medium sized U.S. city. What you might not expect in Anchorage are the 120 miles of recreational trails, an “urban” salmon fishing river, and a diversity of cultures – all on the edge of a spectacular mountain wilderness.

Reviews for our Anchorage Tours

Anchorage Scenic City Tour :

“Our guide Josh was very entertaining and full of great info! We would recommend this tour of Anchorage. Great way to start our 4 days in Anchorage.” Mary

Wildlife Tour:

“This trip was fantastic! I highly recommend it. Our guide, Robbie, was very knowledgeable and friendly. In fact, everyone we met in Alaska was friendly. The wildlife we saw were great. This was our first time to Anchorage, but we will definitely be back.” Robert

Glacier Turn Tour:

“The tour took us to four different sites - aerial tram ride up Mt. Alyeska, fresh lunch in Girdwood, an Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center tour, a Portage Glacier cruise, and scenic photo-stops along the way. It was a whole day tour. Our guide was Sarah who was just excellent in providing a detailed narrative. She answered many of our questions about Alaska lifestyle and places we visited. The tour was most enjoyable. A must for all new visitors.” Syed

Anchorage to Seward Scenic Bus Tour

I cannot praise this tour enough. Our tour guide was so incredibly knowledgeable of both Anchorage and Seward and really helped get us into that Alaskan feel. She stopped at several locations and allowed for many photo ops. The tram ride up the resort was nice. We saw a wild bear and her 3 cubs. We went in early June and there was still plenty of snow to play in at the top of the mountain. The lunch was great. Soup was good. Everything about this tour was great. If you may not go to Alaska again, take this for your transportation to the cruise port over the train. We are so glad we did!” Michael

Discover Denali Flightseeing Tour:

“This was an absolutely fabulous trip! The pilot (Ed) was wonderful and very knowledgeable. We did luck out and have a rare cloudless day and we were able to see for miles!!” Mary

Anchorage to Seward Train:

“This was a fantastic way to get to Seward from Anchorage and an amazing introduction to Alaska. The train was very comfortable and the Gold Star service with 360 view via the domed car was well worth the additional $$ for our bucket list trip. We thoroughly enjoyed this train ride and highly recommend.” Sandra

Adventure with Greatland Adventures

  • Bev As a solo traveler I usually veer towards group tours and make my decisions based on ratings. Greatland Adventures definitely lived up to their high ratings and awesome reviews. I have booked several tours with them. From the beginning it was a pleasurable experience with Steve and Rochelle who have excellent communication with their clients and ensure you are fully accommodated for your tour. I did the northern lights tour with Mike who is an excellent guide! Very knowledgeable and he captured some excellent photos of me! I completed the glacier tour with Bill who is also very knowledgeable and ensured we had a great experience at the glacier by getting us there before others arrived and allowing us to safe explore all the accessible crevasses. I absolutely recommend this tour company they are amazing!
  • Jane I want to sincerely applaud the members of Greatland Adventures! They made me and my friend's trip to Anchorage one of the most amazing experiences ever in our lives... We were all well educated about the lights before we got there and even had a chance to have a pitstop at a gas station to use the toilet and grab a coffee. We even saw the lights that night TWICE! Thank you, Steve! The memories we made will last a lifetime and we are so happy we chose Greatland Adventures. I am telling any and everyone that plans to visit Anchorage to book through them. No question!
  • John I can't say enough about how thoroughly I enjoyed this northern lights tour -- it was truly beyond belief! Steve provides an extremely well-run and well thought-out process for folks to see the aurora, the nicest part of which is that you don't know until about 6 pm that day whether or not you'll be going. This means you don't pay unless you go! But our group got lucky! The skies cleared on Friday evening (16 Feb), and Steve and Laura drove us an hour outside of Anchorage to a supremely dark place they had already scouted out. As soon as we arrived, the green hues started firing up and the sight was beyond one's imagination.

Land Acknowledgement

Greatland Adventures is located in Dena’ina ełnena, Dena’ina homeland. Anchorage is home to the K’enaht’ana, the Indigenous people of Nuti (Knik Arm), who today are members of the Eklutna (Eydlughet) and Knik (K’enakatnu) tribes. The K’enaht’ana have lived and subsisted on the lands and waters between the Chugach and Talkeetna mountains for thousands of years, long before Anchorage was “founded” and developed by visitors from elsewhere.

We are grateful to live in this beautiful land, and we are committed to honor the history and tradition of the Indigenous people of Alaska.

15 Best Day Trips from Anchorage

Anchorage is the largest city in Alaska and acts as the gateway to the state’s vast and abundant wildernesses. Best known for its preservation of native culture Anchorage is quite unlike any other city in the United States of America. The people, faced with some of the most adverse weather in all of North America are hardy but welcoming and incredibly friendly.

While exploring Anchorage city itself the Alaska Native Heritage Center is not to be missed nor the Anchorage Museums. Although there is a lot to explore in Anchorage itself, it makes for a fantastic base for day trips across the state.

I have live in Anchorage and have explored the most popular destinations in all of Alaska. Here is my list of the best day trips form Anchorage.

1. Turnagain Arm

Turnagain Arm

Turnagain Arm is one of the most popular outings for day trippers from Anchorage. This waterway, that feeds into the Gulf of Alaska, draws its name from the misfortune of James Cook, the pioneering British explorer. Cook had no option but to ‘turn again’ when the hearsay of a Northwest Passage turned out to be just that, hearsay.

You can hike along the scenic byway taking in the breathtaking views of the water below and the jagged peaks in the distance. Popular trails include Bird and Rainbow. McHugh Creek, is another beautiful adventure. Hikers are welcome as are mountain bikers.

2. Chugach National Forest

Chugach National Forest

The Chugach National Forest is one of the most accessible day-long excursions from Anchorage, both in terms of proximity and affordability. Incredibly the Chugach National Forest is the second largest national forest in the United States of America, narrowly missing out to Tongass across state.

There is a wealth of natural beauty to be experienced in Chugach National Forest and a heap of ways to enjoy it; from hiking to biking, from kayaking to ATVing. The most accessible hiking trails start just a 20 minute drive from downtown Anchorage. If you want to head further afield, I suggest to travel to the northern tip of Chugach where you can kayak on a glacial lake; not to be missed.

There’s a great guided tour available I recommend: Wilderness Wildlife Glacier Experience

3. Katmai National Park

Katmai National Park

Many of Alaska’s best national parks are accessible from Anchorage by seaplane and none so true of Katmai National Park. This national park is home to paradise like vistas featuring glaciers, volcanoes, lakes and, of course, dense forest too. If you want to catch a glimpse of Alaska’s grizzly bears, Katmai National Park is the place to visit.

Best bear sightings occur in July and September but they can be spotted as early as May. The grizzly bears migrate to the Brooks River to thrash in the powerful river flow snapping salmon travelling upstream left, right and center.

4. Portage Valley

Portage Valley

Portage Valley features one of Alaska’s most popular and picturesque glaciers, the aptly named Portage Glacier. Standing a proud ten stories tall and spanning the same distance wide the Portage Glacier can be found at the far end of Portage Lake. For best access to Portage Glacier I recommend to hike along the Byron Glacier Trail that takes you to the foot of the phenomenal icy formation.

This trail is less than a mile in length and is enjoyable for even the most unenthusiastic of hikers. You can couple a trip around Portage Valley with a visit to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center to add a more educational element to your day. I found on Viator that this is included in their  Valley of Glaciers Experience .

5. Alaska Railroad

Alaska Railroad

The Alaska Railroad snakes through the magnificent North American landscape with such poise and ease one may feel like they are floating. This is a relaxing and enchanting experience that offers you the opportunity to take in the beauty of astounding, awe-inspiring Alaska.

They offer one-day railroad excursions that take you from Anchorage due south towards Seward. Alternatively you can travel further south towards Whittier onto the Kenai Mountains and Spencer Glacier. If you wish to experience Alaska’s frozen north then I suggest to jump aboard the Denali Star that will transport you to Talkeetna, Denali National Park and onto far flung Fairbanks.

6. Eagle River Nature Center

Eagle River Nature Centre

Hikers, bikers and all round avid explorers will love Eagle River Nature Center. Nestled deep within Chugach State Park, that neighbors Chugach National Park, the Eagle River Nature Center is a not-for-profit that offers the average Joe the opportunity to engage with nature in a mindful way.

The Eagle River Nature Centre focuses on getting the wider community reconnected with nature through resource protection, outdoor adventures and interactive educational opportunities. Open throughout the year there are over 10-miles of hiking trails to choose from with varying difficulty.

Situated just a 40-minute drive from downtown Anchorage this is a particularly great day trip if you’re short on time.

7. Rendezvous Peak

Rendezvous Peak, Alaska

Should you be seeking an active and adventurous excursion then do seriously consider Rendezvous Peak. As one of the first great peaks of the Chugach Mountains in the Arctic Valley, Rendezvous Peak is a great introduction to mountainous hikes in Alaska.

To summit Rendezvous Peak one must embark on a 4-mile round trip towards the 1,500 ft peak elevation point. This is a steady incline that naturally steepens towards the pinnacle. From the top explorers are rewarded with breathtaking views of the Cook Inlet and the Anchorage Bowl below.

In the summer months, in particular, you can hike and simultaneously snack on berries that adorn the valley’s hedgerows.

8. Kenai Fjords National Park

Kenai Fjords National Park

The Kenai Fjords National Park is quite possibly Alaska’s most iconic landscape and is the source of wanderlust for many who visit the northernmost state. A day long cruise of the fjord is without a doubt the best way to experience and connect with this inspiring landscape. You will jump aboard your small cruise liner in Seward and head out onto the eerily still waters.

During the course of the cruise, and dependant on the season of your visit, you will have the opportunity to observe some of nature’s greatest achievements both in terms of flora, fauna and geography. Orca, Humpback and Minke Whales regularly frequent these waters and put on quite the performance. There are several multi-day tours available but I went by car on my last visit, it’s about a 2.5 hour drive.

9. Alyeska Resort Aerial Tram

Alyeska Resort Aerial Tram

The Alyeska Resort Aerial Tram is one of the most incredible experiences you can have in Alaska and its perfect for lazy travelers. No need to get hiking or skiing, least not if you don’t want to, head to the Alyeska Resort and ride the aerial tramway to the top of Mt. Alyeska.

Look up, look down, look all around for the Alyeska Resort Aerial Tram offers unrivalled panoramic views of the imposing mountain peaks and densely vegetated valley below. You can take a few snapshots at the top and come back down, drop into the Alyeska Resort fine dining restaurant or hit the ski slopes.

10. Crow Creek Goldmine

Crow Creek Goldmine

Established in 1896 the Crow Creek Goldmine is a world famous gold mine that used pioneering hydraulic technologies to extract the precious metal from the earth. Still a thriving, working gold mine today, a visit to the Crow Creek Goldmine sees you learn about the mining process, the history of this famous business and the amazing products it has produced.

During your visit you can pan for gold yourself, to learn how to sift and sluice the gold from the experts. You can also take a tour around the goldmine village and admire the quaint miners cottages that are perfectly preserved.

11. Roundhouse Museum

Roundhouse At Alyeska Museum

The Roundhouse Museum is proud to be the only mountain top museum in all of Alaska.

Sitting a whopping 2,280ft above sea level the Roundhouse Museum is octagonal rather than perfectly round and was built in 1960. The Roundhouse Museum features dozens of exhibits and artefacts and has most recently opened the ‘The James Girdwood Collection: Photos from 1896-1904’. The museum was renovated in 2003 and received an investment of $1.9 million from the Kenai Mountains-Turnagain Arm National Heritage Corridor Communities Association.

You can couple a visit to the Roundhouse Museum with a ski day at the Alyeska Resort and of course a ride on the Alyeska Resort Aerial Tram.

12. Prince William Sound

Prince William Sound

Prince William Sound is quite possibly one of the most breathtaking ocean inlets in the world. The Prince William Sound is best experienced on a mini cruise liner. You can see icebergs crack and crash into the calm waters below. As you cruise through the sound you will push floating masses of ice to the wayside and power on to the next awe-inspiring viewpoint.

Otters, seals and sea lions are regularly sighted in the Prince William Sound and are almost a guarantee. Avid ornithologists will be blown away by the migratory sea birds that frequent the area throughout the year. Highlights of a day cruise include Barry Glacier and Blackstone Bay.

13. Matanuska Valley Glaciers

Matanuska Valley Glaciers

The opportunity for adventures within the Matanuska Valley Glaciers is almost endless. Whether you explore the ice with crampons and hiking poles, with a paddle and a kayak or even aboard a bush plane, be prepared to be blown away and entirely awe-struck.

Sitting just off the Glenn Highway is a gentle one mile hiking path that takes you through a sprawling aspen forest and out towards the Matanuska Valley Glaciers that is not to be missed. Even in the summer these glaciers are snow topped, so be sure to reignite your childish side and indulge in a fun and frenetic snowball fight.

14. 6-Mile Creek Rafting

6-Mile Creek Rafting

Alaska is famed for its white water rafting and one of the most famous spots of all is 6-Mile Creek. If you want to embrace the wild waters that surround Anchorage then Lower 6-Mile Creek should be your first port of call. Featuring both IV and V rapids this is not for the faint hearted.

Get ready for an adrenaline packed adventure that sees you race through narrow water runs, down steep, stomach clenching drops and out the other side. There are a number of reputable rafting companies who offer full day and half day excursions throughout the year, for example novalaska.com . I advice to wear your thermals in winter though.

15. Dog Sledding

Dog Sledding

Dog Sledding has been a pivotal part of Alaskan culture for centuries. Come rain or shine, summer or winter, these dogs are ready to rock and roll; so you better be ready for an adventure. More than just dogs, these are full time athletes who are in the prime of their life.

Depending on your chosen tour company you can sled through the snowy mountain passes, the gravely river banks or through the meadows. You can even learn the art of mushing at the Alaska Mushing School. Although it takes years to master the technique and build trusting bonds with the dogs in the course of a day you can get to grips with the basics and learn more about this amazing tradition.

The untamed natural beauty surrounding Anchorage lures sightseers out of their vehicles and into the wild. North and southbound adventures make perfect day trips for Anchorage visitors. Rent a car and take your time; there is a lot to see and do along these self-drive sightseeing journeys.

Day 1: Navigating North

Head north from downtown Anchorage along the Glenn Highway, a National Scenic Byway. Stop at Thunderbird Falls for a scenic 1-mile hike to the waterfall. Continue north to Eklutna Lake. The long, glacial lake is a great place to picnic, pedal, paddle, or all three!  Bike  and  kayak  rentals, as well as guided  ATV  tours are available and start near the day-use parking area.

Cross the highway to Eklutna Historical Park. Learn about the blending Dena'ina Athabascan culture and Russian Orthodox traditions, and walk among the colorful spirit houses in the cemetery. See an old log Russian Orthodox Church, which is among the oldest buildings in Alaska.

Find more adventures north of the city.

Day 2: Navigating South

Beginning in Anchorage, the trip along  Turnagain Arm  is one of the most beautiful highways in Alaska and the nation. Stop by Potter Marsh in south Anchorage and follow the boardwalk through wetland habitat. Hop back in the car, but don’t get too comfy. Pull over at Windy Point to look for  Dall sheep  and Beluga Point for bald eagles and beluga whales. Further south Indian Valley Mine offers an introduction to Alaska’s gold rush history and hands-on gold panning.

Detour to Girdwood for lunch. Grab a sandwich on fresh-baked bread, some sushi, or a burger on a heap of crispy fries. After a bite to eat in  Girdwood , hit the Winner Creek Trail. The trailhead is near the aerial tram station behind Alyeska Resort. Out and back is about five miles on a relatively flat trail. Two bridges cross Winner Creek, plus there is a unique hand-powered tram that carries passengers, one or two at a time, across the glacial-fed, roaring waters of Winner Creek Gorge. You can also get a literal overview of the area with a quick ride on the  Alyeska Tramway  when you return to the trailhead.

Back on the highway, continue south to  Portage Glacier  for a hour cruise to get up close to the face of an icy-blue glacier. Step into the Begich, Boggs Visitor Center to learn about the valley's dynamic glacial and geological history. The  Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center , a wildlife center and park, is nearby. You won’t get better wildlife photos anywhere else.

Return to Anchorage as the sun slowly sets over Turnagain Arm.
