Best Motorcycle Routes in Andorra 2023

Hello everyone, motorcycle fanatics! Today we continue with the section of... MOTORBIKE ROUTES THROUGH... And in this edition, we are going to enter the wonderful places and corners of nothing more and nothing less than... Andorra!

Andorra has a road network made from of six main roads and about thirty secondary roads, where we will find miles and miles of curves, slopes and incredible landscapes and places to enjoy nature. Let's go!

Motorcycle route from La Farga de Moles to Andorra La Vella

andorra motorbike tours

This route will start at the village of La Farga de Moles, a town that belongs to the municipality of Valles del Valira, in the province of Lleida in Catalonia. The route will be carried out through the General Road 1 (CG-1), called in the principality the road to Spain, as it connects the capital of Andorra with the Spanish border.

On this route you can enjoy breathtaking views thanks to its mountains and especially the Valira River. We will also cross several urban centers such as Santa Coloma and La Margineda among others, until we reach Andorra La Vella.

It will be approximately 10-11 kilometers, so normally in about 15-25 minutes you will have finished it. It is a route that we recommend if you want to go out with your bike but do not have too much time.

From La Massana to Puerto de Cabús, the best motorcycle route in Andorra for trial and enduro enjoyers.

andorra motorbike tours

This route starts in the town of La Massana , one of the seven parishes that make up the principality. From there through the CG-4, you will cross two valleys with incredible views where you can stop and enjoy nature, until you reach the Puerto de Cabús , a mountain pass that connects the parish of La Massana and Alins . A curious fact is that the road is paved on the Andorran side but not on the Catalan side.

It will be approximately 18 kilometers of route. In addition, the Port of Cabús is the favorite place in Andorra for trail and enduro enthusiasts, as it is a perfect mountain area for excursions and motorcycle rides.

Motorcycle route from Andorra La Vella to Pas de la Casa

andorra motorbike tours

This route starts in Andorra La Vella and will be carried out through the CG-2, which is known in the principality as the road to France, as it is the one that connects the principality with the French border (El Pas de la Casa).

It will be approximately 33 kilometers of route. This is the longest road in the principality of Andorra and as we travel along it we will pass charming places such as Encamp, Canillo and Soldeu among others. But the most striking of this route is the Envalira pass, the highest mountain pass with road in the Pyrenees, with no more and no less than 2,409 meters above sea level.

From Andorra La Vella to Ordino, one of the best motorcycle routes in Andorra.

andorra motorbike tours

This route, like the previous one, starts in Andorra La Vella, but this time you will travel with your motorcycle along the CG-3, the road that connects the center of the principality with Ordino Arcalís , the ski resort with the best quality snow in the Pyrenees, which will be where this route will end.

It will be approximately 29 kilometers of route. It is one of the most striking routes as it has a section which is part of the Tour de France . In it we recommend that you go making stops, as there are populations with very nice places such as Sonrás, La Cortinada or El Serrat .

From Aixovall to Os de Civís

And finally we are going to mention the shortest route of all those we have mentioned. It will start in the village of Aixovall and will be carried out by the CG-6, the only road that communicates with Os de Civís , a village in the region of Alt Urgell in Catalonia .

It will be approximately 6 kilometers of route . In it you will cross endearing places and always surrounded by the nature that characterizes the Principality of Andorra. The most curious of this route is almost at the end of it, as we can see a big difference between the quality of the pavement when crossing the Andorran border and passing to Spain. And finally mention also that the Os de Civís is well known by fans of mountain bikes, quads and all-terrain vehicles.

Snow-covered Tristaina lakes, located in the mountains of Ordino, in Andorra.

If you like your countries monarchic, your cities few and your mountains snowy, Andorra is the place for you.

Squished into the eastern Pyrenees between France and Spain , this tiny little country is best known for its skiing, smuggling and lax tax laws. Even if you’re not much of a skier though (or smuggler for that matter), there’s still plenty to like about this Lilliputian land. The shopping is top-notch (and duty-free), the cuisine – drawing on the best of French and Spanish gastronomy – is predictably delish, and the scenery stunning. Plus, if for some crazy reason you decide you don’t like Andorra, it’s not like you’ll need to go far to escape it – at only 290 square miles in size, a foreign border is never too far away.

Best time to visit andorra.

The best time to visit Andorra really depends on what you’re after.

If it’s a temperate alpine escape, summer (June–August) is your man – though evenings can still get cold.

If it’s the country’s world-famous skiing you’re seeking, then it’s winter (December–February) you’ll be wanting.

Daytime temperatures from mid-November to May tend to hover around 42-degrees Fahrenheit and the snow falls in abundance.

Geography and environment

With one road into the country, another out, and only a smattering of cities, Andorra’s landscape is all about the mountains.

Gorges, valleys, gullies and rivers carve up the countryside, the majority of which is forested and plenty cloaked in snow.

When is the best time to visit Andorra?

The best time to visit Andorra largely depends on your preferences and the activities you plan to engage in. Each season in Andorra offers unique experiences and opportunities. Here's an overview of the different seasons to help you decide:

Winter (December to February): Winter is a popular time to visit Andorra, especially for ski enthusiasts. The ski season typically runs from late November to early April, with peak snow conditions occurring between December and February. If you enjoy winter sports like skiing, snowboarding, or snowshoeing, this is an ideal time to visit. However, note that it can be crowded during school holidays and weekends.

Spring (March to May): Spring in Andorra brings milder temperatures and longer days. It's a transition period when you can witness the snow melting and nature awakening. The ski season starts winding down, but it's still possible to enjoy some late-season skiing. Additionally, hiking and biking trails begin to open, and the landscape comes alive with colourful blooms.

Summer (June to August): Summer in Andorra offers pleasant weather, with temperatures averaging between 20-25°C (68-77°F). It's an excellent time for outdoor activities like hiking, mountain biking, and exploring the picturesque landscapes. You'll find lush green valleys, blooming wildflowers, and clear blue skies. Summer is also when various festivals and cultural events take place, adding a vibrant atmosphere to your visit.

Autumn (September to November): Autumn in Andorra showcases stunning foliage as the forests transform into a tapestry of vibrant colours. The weather remains mild during the early part of the season, making it an ideal time for hiking and enjoying outdoor activities. As autumn progresses, temperatures start to cool, and the ski season begins gearing up with snowfall in higher elevations.

It's worth noting that the peak tourist season in Andorra is during winter, particularly around Christmas and New Year, as well as school holidays. If you prefer a quieter visit, consider planning your trip during the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn.

Ultimately, the best time to visit Andorra depends on your personal interests and the activities you wish to partake in. Consider the weather, your desired experiences, and the level of crowds you are comfortable with when choosing the most suitable time for your visit.

Will I need a visa to travel to Andorra?

No, you generally do not need a visa to travel to Andorra for tourism purposes. Andorra is not a member of the European Union (EU) or the Schengen Area, but it maintains an agreement with neighbouring countries that allows for visa-free travel.

If you hold a passport from a European Union member country, a Schengen Area member country, or certain other countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand, you can typically enter Andorra without a visa and stay for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. However, it's important to check the specific entry requirements based on your nationality, as visa exemptions can vary.

While Andorra does not have its own airport, visitors usually arrive through neighbouring countries such as Spain or France. Ensure that you comply with the entry requirements of the country you will be transiting through, as they may have different visa regulations.

It's recommended to verify the current visa requirements for your specific citizenship by checking with the embassy or consulate of Andorra or the relevant transit countries well in advance of your trip. They can provide you with the most up-to-date and accurate information regarding visa requirements for your travel to Andorra.

How does the rooming work on tours?

Small group tours in Andorra typically involve a set itinerary where you travel with a group of fellow travellers and a tour leader/guide. Accommodation arrangements  vary depending on the specific tour you choose. Here are some common aspects of rooming arrangements on small group tours:

Shared Rooms: In order to promote camaraderie and facilitate interaction among group members, most tours arrange shared accommodation. This means you will be paired with another member of the same gender from the group to share a room. Roommates may sometimes change periodically throughout the tour.

Single Supplement: If you prefer to have your own room and privacy, you may have the option to pay a single supplement fee. This additional fee allows you to have your own room for the duration of the tour. However, please note that single supplements can vary in cost and availability.

Roommate Matching: Tour operators usually offer roommate matching services, where they try to pair you with a suitable roommate based on your preferences, such as age range. This can help ensure compatibility and a more enjoyable experience for all participants.

Rooming Preferences: When booking your small group tour, it's important to communicate your rooming preferences to the tour operator. If you have specific requirements or preferences, such as sharing with a friend or a specific roommate request, it's advisable to inform the tour operator during the booking process.

It's important to carefully read the tour details and inclusions provided by the tour operator to understand their specific rooming policies. If having your own room is a priority, make sure to inquire about the availability of single supplements and any associated costs before booking your tour.

Keep in mind that while sharing a room with a fellow traveller can be a great way to meet new people and build connections, having your own room provides more privacy and flexibility. Consider your preferences and the dynamics of the tour when deciding whether to opt for a shared room or pay for a single supplement.

Remember to communicate your needs and preferences clearly with the tour operator during the booking process to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable accommodation experience on your small group tour in Andorra.

Yes, the tap water in Andorra is generally safe to drink. The country has a reliable water supply system, and the tap water is treated and monitored to meet high-quality standards. It is considered safe for consumption and is commonly used by residents and visitors alike.

The water in Andorra comes from natural sources, including mountain springs and rivers, which are known for their purity. The water undergoes treatment processes to ensure its safety and potability.

If you prefer, you can also find bottled water readily available in stores and supermarkets throughout Andorra. However, this is primarily a matter of personal preference, as the tap water is considered safe and of good quality.

As with any travel destination, there can be slight variations in the taste or mineral content of tap water, which some individuals may notice. If you have specific health concerns or sensitivities, it is always advisable to consult a healthcare professional or rely on bottled water.

In summary, drinking tap water in Andorra is generally safe, but if you have any reservations, you can opt for bottled water, which is widely available.

Are there any cultural norms in Andorra I should follow?

When visiting Andorra, it's always a good idea to be aware of and respect the local cultural norms and customs. Here are some general cultural norms to keep in mind:

Politeness and Respect: Andorrans value politeness and respect in their interactions. It is customary to greet people with a polite "bon dia" (good morning), "bona tarda" (good afternoon), or "bona nit" (good evening) when entering shops, restaurants, or engaging with locals. Using "per favor" (please) and "gràcies" (thank you) is also appreciated.

Dress Code: Andorrans generally dress casually but modestly. When visiting religious sites, it is advisable to dress more conservatively, covering shoulders and knees. In some higher-end establishments or during special events, smart-casual attire may be appropriate.

Punctuality: Being punctual is valued in Andorran culture. It's best to arrive on time for appointments, meetings, or scheduled activities to show respect for others' time.

Language: The official language of Andorra is Catalan, although many locals also speak Spanish and French. While English may be understood in tourist areas, learning a few basic phrases in Catalan or Spanish can be appreciated and help you connect with the locals.

Tipping: Tipping is not obligatory in Andorra but is generally appreciated for good service. If you receive exceptional service at a restaurant, rounding up the bill or leaving a small tip is customary. In hotels, you can leave a small amount for housekeeping if desired.

Queuing: Andorrans generally follow a queueing system and respect the order of arrival. It is polite to wait your turn in lines at shops, ticket counters, or public transport.

Smoking Regulations: Andorra has strict smoking regulations, and smoking is prohibited in most enclosed public spaces. Be mindful of designated smoking areas and adhere to the local regulations.

Photography: Always ask for permission before taking photographs of individuals, especially in more private or personal settings. Respect any signage or requests indicating that photography is not allowed.

Outdoor Etiquette: When engaging in outdoor activities, such as hiking or skiing, be mindful of the natural surroundings and follow any posted guidelines or rules. Preserve the environment by not littering and staying on designated paths or trails.

By observing these cultural norms, you can show respect for the local customs and enhance your experience while visiting Andorra. Remember, cultural practices may vary slightly across different regions and individual preferences, so it's always beneficial to observe and adapt to your specific surroundings.

What should I pack for a trip to Andorra?

When packing for a trip to Andorra, it's important to consider the time of year and the activities you plan to engage in. Here is a general packing list to help you prepare for your trip:

  • Layered clothing: Andorra's weather can be changeable, so pack a variety of lightweight and warm layers that you can easily add or remove.
  • Warm jacket or coat: Especially for the colder months or if you plan to engage in outdoor activities in the mountains.
  • Waterproof or windproof outer layer: To protect yourself from rain, snow, or strong winds.
  • Comfortable walking shoes: Andorra offers opportunities for hiking and exploring, so pack sturdy and comfortable footwear.
  • Hat, gloves, and scarf: To keep you warm in colder temperatures, especially during the winter months.
  • Swimwear: If your accommodation has a pool or if you plan to visit thermal spas.

Outdoor Gear and Accessories:

  • Daypack: A small backpack for carrying essentials and personal items during day trips and outdoor activities.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen: Protect yourself from the sun's rays, which can be stronger at higher altitudes.
  • Hiking or outdoor gear: If you plan to hike, consider packing appropriate gear such as a walking stick, hiking boots, or a rain cover for your backpack.

Travel Essentials:

  • Travel adapter: Andorra uses European-style electrical outlets with two round pins, so make sure to bring an adapter if needed.
  • Travel documents: Passport, visa (if required), travel insurance, and any other necessary identification or documentation.
  • Medications: If you take prescription medications, be sure to pack an ample supply for the duration of your trip.
  • First aid kit: Carry a basic first aid kit with essentials such as bandages, antiseptic cream, pain relievers, and any personal medications you might need.
  • Electronic devices: Don't forget to bring your camera, smartphone, chargers, and any other electronic devices you may require.

Miscellaneous Items:

  • Cash and/or credit/debit cards: Andorra uses the Euro (€) as its currency, so ensure you have some cash on hand for smaller establishments or places that might not accept cards.
  • Travel guidebook or maps: Helpful for navigating the country and discovering points of interest.
  • Water bottle: To stay hydrated during your explorations.
  • Snacks: Carry some energy bars or snacks for longer hikes or when you're on the go.

Remember to check the weather forecast before your trip to better tailor your packing list. It's also a good idea to pack versatile items that can be mixed and matched to suit different weather conditions and activities.

Lastly, always pack according to your personal needs and preferences. Andorra has shops where you can purchase any items you might have forgotten or need during your stay.

Abbey santa maria de montserrat.

andorra motorbike tours

The “sawed mountain” which reaches up to 4,000 ft., makes a magnificent setting for Catalonia's holiest location, the monastery of Montserrat. Surrounded by chapels and eremite caves, it dates back to the 9th century. After Napoleon's troops destroyed it in 1811, the main complex was rebuilt in 1844. Under Franco it was a bastion of the Catalonian resistance. Today the monastery is inhabited by monks of the Benedictine order. Most famous for this area is the black Madonna, which was supposedly made by the evangelist Luke, and brought here by St. Peter.

La Seu d’Urgell

andorra motorbike tours

The beginnings of the town just 10 km south of Andorra are shrouded in the mist of history. It is known that the Romans were there and, after them, the Moors. Seu's history really started in the 9th century, when the Franks evicted the Muslims from this area and turned the town into a bishopric and the regional capital. The Romanesque Catedral de Santa Maria was built in the 12th century and is one of the oldest ones in Catalonia. It is well worth a visit, just like all the old town with its narrow alleyways and arcades. There are many good restaurants to choose from if you are hungry.

Andorra la Vella

andorra motorbike tours

Covering only 170 square miles, Andorra is one of the smallest countries in Europe. From 1279 onwards, it was reigned by two rulers, the Spanish Bishop of Seu d'Urgell and the French Duke of Foix - later the French President. Even though Andorra became independent in 1993, both are formally still principals of this state. Being a tax free area, Andorra today looks like an oversized shopping mall.

Carcassonne

andorra motorbike tours

The city, nowadays separated into the fortified Cité de Carcassonne and the younger lower city, the ville basse, was founded as a roman settlement in the first century BC. The Cité, situated within the ramparts, has evolved into a tourist attraction of the first rank. The town surface of a mere 14 hectares hosted some 3000 to 4000 inhabitants in medieval times. Today, around 230 people permanently live inside the fortifications, all the rest residing outside and coming here to work in tourism. In the course of the 12th century, the city came to be a centre of the Cathar-movement and in further consequence an episcopal see for the Cathars. It won notoriety in 1209, when the Cathars were expelled and killed in the course of the Albigensian crusade. In the sequel, the castle accommodated the headquarters of inquisition in southern France. Whilst the lower city gained importance in the course of time, the formerly splendid Cité was left to decay. The fortress was thoroughly restored in the 19th century by the theorist and architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc and added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1997.

Gorges de Galamus

andorra motorbike tours

The Gorges de Galamus is a system of bizarrely shaped canyons, formed by the river Agly and its numerous springs. The road cut out of bare rock will not fail to impress you. Have your cameras handy! It is a special experience to ride your bike through this narrow canyon. A short walk brings you to the bottom of the canyon, where you will find a unique hermitage and a chapel carved into the rock, offering a very special atmosphere.

Route GI 682 Sant Feliu-Lloret de Mar

andorra motorbike tours

Located on the Costa Brava, this utterly scenic ride along the cliffs with perfect surface and incredible views is exhilarating but also dangerous. The 21.3 km (13.2 miles) long road between the towns of Tossa de Mar and Sant Feliu de Guixols offers sea, beaches, mountains, cliffs and forests mixed in an impressive drive. It's a rollercoaster road, uphill and downhill, and every new turn is a new adventure. You have to focus on it because if you go off the road you fall down the cliff. Tour of the Pyrenees PYT

Andorra    |   france    |   spain, 100% riding fun, little traffic and stunning landscapes – these are the pyrenees.

Castelldefels, just South of Barcelona, is our gateway to the Pyrenees, a mountain range which forms a natural border between Spain and France. It features many peaks of 10,000 ft. or more, lots of remote wilderness and many miles of fantastic motorcycling roads. Right after leaving the coast we get to see the famous abbey of Montserrat, a 1,000-year-old monastery. Further inland, more history-laden places such as Cardona and La Seu d‘Urgell are on our way before we enter the micro-nation and shopping paradise of Andorra. Riding over the Col de Puymorens, we arrive in France, where we spend our rest day in the stunning town of Carcassonne, delightfully enclosed by medieval walls and lined with picturesque alleys. The next day we take the way back to Spain, through untouched nature and with nearly no traffic. We leave the Pyrenees behind and take the way down to the seaside. Between Sant Feliu and Lloret de Mar, one of Europe‘s greatest coastal roads sweetens our last day and bids us farewell. Back in Castelldefels, we will recall the past few days with a glass of red wine. Man, what a tour!

We take a tour of the Smuggler Trail, a hidden gem between the borders of Spain and Andorra

andorra motorbike tours

Green Lane expert Mike Beddows takes us on a tour of the Smuggler Trail, a hidden gem between the borders of Spain and Andorra…

Eight of us were enjoying some of the best tapas we had ever experienced during an evening in the campsite bar in Sort, Spain. We were getting to know our host, Peppe (barman and excellent chef) very well. He was smoking like a chimney all night and informed us that he made two trips a month over to nearby Andorra for cheap cigarettes. With the duty free limits at 300 cigs per trip we could see why this man needed multiple trips to satisfy his habit, and we believed him when he said he ran out on many occasions. What better way to show our gratitude for the fantastic food and cheap drinks than to head over to Andorra via the Smugglers Trail and bring him some tobacco back over, which would then serve as our tip for such a fantastic host. The following day’s ride was planning itself.

Six months previous myself and seven really good riding friends (who all met through ABR) decided on one of our many weekend jaunts around the UK that we should go abroad to trail ride. As I had previously been down to the Pyrenees trail riding it seemed a good option. I’d never ridden the Smugglers Trail and apart from knowing where Andorra is, I had no idea where the trail actually was. My extensive searching on the internet was not fruitful, but luckily for me I have several other friends who pointed me in the right direction. Maps were marked up and I knew where the Smugglers Trail was now. The rough plan was to sail down to Spain, ride the 170 or so miles to Jaca, then trail ride to Sort which we would use as our base for a few days.

It turns out that the Smugglers Trail is an unpaved track leading from Spain into Andorra. Its primary use was for smuggling tobacco from the duty free principality of Andorra back into Spain through the border hamlet of Tor. The trail leads up to Port de Cabus pass at an elevation of 2,302 meters. The road on the Andorran side is paved. I have been informed that although there are no custom points on the pass there are sometimes roving patrols via the Andorran border control.

We set off from Sort after a good breakfast. It was approximately fifteen miles to Alins along the C-13 to Llavorsi, then the L-504 to Alins. This was a fantastic short road ride, the twists and turns in the road were fantastic. We all thought we were doing pretty well at 65mph on our trail bikes as we banked into the turns. That was until we were all startled when several sports touring bikes passed us at breakneck speeds, some carrying pillions.

On approaching the village of Alins (1), where the Smuggler Route starts the views of the snow capped mountains ahead were stunning. As you pass through the village there is a small signpost for Tor. This is the small village halfway to Andorra and is on the Smugglers Trail. Take this turning.

The first few miles are on a single vehicle width tarmac road. The road winds its way around two mountains, one at 1,459 meters and then back around the next peak of 1,515 meters. All the time following a raging stream of melt water, we had to negotiate several rock falls and fallen trees. Luckily for us, as this route leads to the inhabited villages of Noris and Tor, the fallen trees had been cut back allowing us to pass without any issues. Be aware that rocks and trees may block the route any time of the year, not just after winter storms.

We continued along the single tarmac road until we reached a bridge crossing the river. Off to the right was a trail heading up the mountain. We started on this trail to have a look. According to the map it went to nowhere, but we were soon stopped by many fallen trees. We turned around and crossed the bridge below, following a signpost leading to Tor.

This is where the tarmac ends and the dirt starts (2). A short distance later we reached the picturesque village of Tor (3). The track leading here is relatively easy with a soft muddy base that will no doubt be baked hard in the Spanish sun during the summer.

Driving carefully through Tor we turned right and headed further up the Smugglers Trail. The route started to get more challenging with a few rocks and more mud. After a couple of hundred meters there is a turn off to the left (4). Checking the map both this turn off and going straight ahead meet further up the mountain after both going different ways round a 2064 meter Peak.

We opted to go left. After a short scramble up the trail we met snow for the first time. We tried sticking to the edge of the trail but soon realised we would not succeed. The snow was just too deep in-between the trees. The shade was delaying the melting even though it was up to twenty-degrees in the sun. We turned around and decided to check the other route. As it turns out, this way was fantastic. The trail was good, lots of twists and turns as it headed up and passed a mountain refuge called Bordes de Plaia. We continued on, splashing through many muddy puddles and eventually crossed through a ford (5). The trail immediately turned left and headed up the mountain.

At the second switchback we were halted by snow. A large drift was blocking the way. No problem for our little trail bikes. We ploughed on. Unfortunately this was the end of the road for Ant on 990 ADV. There was no way he fancied battling on through snow on such a heavy bike, so both him and Stu (KTM 660 ADV) turned around (always better to stick in groups or at a minimum two riders on trails), whilst the remaining riders continued on battling through snow. We managed a few more drifts before eventually meeting the other trail that joined from below (7).

To our left was the 2,064 meter peak. I can definitely recommend walking the short couple hundred meters to the top (6). The views are magnificent. Unfortunately, from our elevated viewpoint we could clearly see the border 300 meters above, and the amount of white glistening snow caused our hearts to sink as we knew it would be virtually impossible to cross over to Andorra on the bikes. Being ABR’s we continued and decided to get as far as possible. After all, you never know. Through more snow drifts we went until the road ahead was completely blocked with snow. We had come as far as possible. After checking the map I estimated we were 150 vertical meters, and about 700 meters from the border. We were beat (8). Time to turn the bikes around and head back down. Peppe would just have to make a trip himself via the road if he wanted more cigarettes and would just have to settle for cash as a tip… which he gratefully received.

Getting there .

There’s no getting away from the fact that Andorra is a long ride from the UK. Last year three of us trailered a DRZ and two KTM 950 ADV down, and from Runcorn Cheshire it was a thirty-one hour non-stop drive, alternating drivers. This year we opted for the leisurely option of the ferry to Spain. I think we all agreed it was the best option, but it’s still at least a two day trip just to get to Andorra. It was a four and a half hour ride to Portsmouth, followed by a 24 hour (approx) sailing to Bilbao on the Cap Finistere ferry. From there it’s a six to seven hour ride to Andorra. The way back was from Santander to Plymouth on the Brittany ferry flagship ferry, the ‘Pont Avon’, which was a quicker twenty hour (approximately) sailing. The ferry was £288 return each, this included the bike, and the rider sharing a four berth outside cabin (two cabins). The facilities onboard both ships were fantastic. I’d recommend not rushing the trip and making the journey part of the adventure. We didn’t arrive in Andorra until day four having spent a couple of days trail riding to get there. This trip could be achieved in as little as a week, but I would suggest taking a few extra days and enjoying the time in Spain and Andorra. We took a leisurely ten days.

What to take

We all took our UK driving licenses, MOT certificates (if required), V5 logbooks, bike tax, personal travel insurance and European Health Insurance cards. But the most important ‘luxury’ was Breakdown cover. I would not suggest riding abroad without the knowledge that you and your bike can get home safely in the event of any misfortune.

Where to stay

We stayed at a Campsite in Sort, about 15 miles South West of the Smugglers Trail (there’s only one campsite in Sort). It is a very bike friendly place and they don’t mind groups of lads checking in. This is an excellent base as the trails in the mountains lead off in all directions. I went last year in the height of summer and the campsite was heaving, but there was still space for us. This time we virtually had the site to ourselves. The host ‘Peppe’ was fantastic. The food he prepared was divine, and the beers and wine just kept flowing all night. Just think of the most food and drink you can consume, all for twenty euros each. All eight that went this year will recommend this campsite: Camping S.A. Noguera Pallaresa, Sort, Lleida, Cataluña-Catalunya, telephone +34 973 620 820

When to go

Unless you have a snow mobile it’s pretty pointless trying this route in the winter months. Even at the beginning of May we hit the snowline at 2,100 meters. Considering the pass is at 2,302 meters it’s surprising that we made it so far up the route. We estimated that it would be a couple more weeks until the route would be completely rideable. I would say the ‘correct’ time to go would be from the end of May to October. Remembering that it is a mountain and snow could fall at any time during the year which could block the pass.

The main trail from Alins to the Spain Andorra border can be found on the Pallars Sobira 1:50K map. If you wanted to form a loop back from Andorra to Spain via a different trail you would also need the Alt Urgel 1:50K map. When I bought the maps from Amazon and they were £9.95 each.
