⚠ Important changes to ANZ's credit card insurance policies: ANZ is making changes to the complimentary insurances on its credit cards which will take effect from 7 June 2024. A summary of the upcoming changes can be found here .

Overall Rating

The ANZ Rewards Black credit card comes with the biggest lump sum of Rewards Points (equal to $650 in gift cards), plus a nice cashback bonus that helps offset the annual fee. It’s fair to say it gives a good impression straight up, and keeps on delivering with the highest rate of points per dollar than any other ANZ card.

It doesn’t earn frequent flyer points directly, but you can redeem your ANZ points for Velocity and other airline programs, giving you lots of flexibility in how you want to use your points.

What I love about the ANZ Rewards Black

The ANZ Rewards Black earns points, offers insurance, organises your pet’s weekly wash and pops cash back in your pocket when you buy shoes. If that sounds like an odd list of duties for a credit card, you’re right - but that’s exactly what this little superstar can do.

I’ll start with the big bonus offer, and then unpack the rest of the card’s features.

Bonus offer: When you sign up for a new card and spend $3000 on eligible purchases in the first 3 months from approval, you can get:

  • 180,000 extra ANZ Rewards Points. It’s ANZ’s biggest bonus points offer.

Note: you won’t be eligible for these bonuses if you have held an ANZ card within the previous 12 months.

Earning ANZ Rewards points

The ANZ Rewards Points are tiered on this card. So, you’ll earn:

  • 2 ANZ Reward Points per $1 spent up to and including $5000
  • 1 ANZ Reward Point for every $1 spent over $5000

That means you can earn unlimited points on eligible purchases, but less once you’ve reached $5000 in a statement period.

ANZ says most everyday purchases are eligible. Transactions that aren’t eligible to earn ANZ Rewards points include interest charges, fees, cash advances, cash equivalent transactions, balance transfers, Government Charges (includes but is not limited to payments for goods, services, charges and/or levies made to a local, state or federal government or statutory authorities or related agencies), transactions for gambling or gaming purposes and reversed or refunded transactions.

It’s an excellent idea to read the PDS to see the full list of exclusions.

Redeeming ANZ Rewards points

This is where we see the full flexibility of the ANZ Rewards Black. Earning ANZ Rewards points means you can redeem them directly or transfer them to a frequent flyer program you like. You can redeem points for:

  • Gift cards with retailers such as Woolworths, Bunnings, Myer and Apple
  • ANZ Cashback, where 1250 Rewards Points are equal to $5
  • Merchandise from hundreds of retailers at the ANZ Rewards Store
  • Velocity Frequent Flyer
  • Air New Zealand Airpoints
  • Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer

Other extras

This card comes with a host of extras across insurance, discounts and budgeting.

Complimentary insurance. Insurances help to protect your purchases and make travelling cheaper. The ANZ Rewards Black includes:

Concierge services. ANZ’s concierge service is available 24 hours a day. Just call the number and the concierge will help you organise flights, itineraries and accommodation, and book event tickets and restaurants.

You can request help with day-to-day life, like choosing gifts and buying flowers to be delivered. It’s also how you can have your pet grooming organised on autopilot. It’s a nice perk to take some of the mental load out of life.

Cashrewards. You can sign up for Cashrewards and earn cashback from over 2000 big brand names when you shop online (and earn ANZ Rewards Points at the same time).

Instalment plans. You can nominate up to 99 purchases to be paid off in interest-free instalments over 3, 6 or 12 months. You can manage your plans via the ANZ App and cancel anytime without penalty.

Balance transfers. You can transfer amounts over $100 from eligible non-ANZ credit cards and store cards, as long as you haven’t already reached 95% of your available credit limit. While many banks will turn off interest-free days while you have a balance transfer, ANZ says you’ll still get them if you pay your statement’s Closing Balance each month.

What’s not so great

I’ve given this card a big pat on the back so far, but there are a few things to be aware of.

First, as a premium card the annual fee is high. You’ll need to make sure you’re getting the value out of the points and extras to make it worth the ongoing cost.

Next, ANZ Rewards Points expire. You have 36 months to spend them from 31 December of the year the points were earned. If you close your ANZ Rewards account you have 90 days to use your points before they expire.

Lastly, if you want to add extra cardholders you’ll pay an Additional Cardholder fee of $10 and an annual Rewards Program Service fee of $55 per year ($65 in total per person).

Who suits the ANZ Rewards Black?

This is a card with a variety of benefits and loads of flexibility. It suits travellers, people who want points that turn into freebies, lifestyle extras and ways to save on interest.

This offer makes it compelling, offering more bonus points than other banks.

Crusaders Fan

Besides the sign-up offer it is not worth it. If you take into account the annual fee, plus any extra cardholder fee, and the rewards fee and offset this against the points you earn I don't think it is worth it. I spend about $2,500 monthly and the rewards value from this would hardly outweigh the cost of the fees with this card.

Fantastic deal if you know how to use it correctly!

Offers a big 180,000 bonus ANZ Reward Points and $150 back, with a $375 annual fee.

The ANZ Rewards Black earns the most points per $1 of any ANZ Rewards card, with 2 Reward Points per $1 on eligible purchases for the first $5,000 per statement period and 1 point per $1 after that. To give you an example of the value you can get from the 180,000 bonus points offer, you could redeem them for $800 worth of Woolworths WISH digital gift cards. Or transfer them to get 90,000 Velocity Points – enough for a return business class flight from Brisbane to Perth.

As well as Velocity, this flexible rewards program lets you transfer points to Air New Zealand Airpoints, Singapore Airlines Krisflyer or Asia Miles. You can also redeem points for statement credit or retail items. This card also comes with complimentary insurance options – including for international and domestic travel. Just make sure these benefits will give you enough value to justify the card's costs.

  • 180,000 bonus ANZ Reward Points
  • $150 back on your new card
  • Up to 2 ANZ Reward Points per $1 spent
  • Complimentary extras including travel insurance and a personal concierge
  • Charges a relatively high annual fee of $375 p.a.
  • 3% foreign transaction fee
  • Additional cardholder fee of $65 per card

The ANZ Rewards Black is a premium credit card with features suited to big spenders and earners. If you apply as a new customer, you’ll earn 180,000 bonus ANZ Reward Points and get $150 back when you spend $3,000 on eligible purchases in the first 3 months from card approval. That’s enough for around $800 worth of gift cards.

Hi what income do you need for this card. Cheers

Amy Bradney-George Finder

Hi James, ANZ doesn’t list a minimum income requirement for this card. But you will need to provide details of your income, expenses and other liabilities when you apply. As credit card providers in Australia have to consider your ability to repay the total limit over a 3-year period, it could also help to consider the minimum credit limit ($15,000 at the time of writing). Finder’s guide to credit card minimum income requirements also has further details if you’re interested. I hope this helps.

going on a short 3 day cruise melbourne to adelaide. i am 79. will the insurance attached to the card cover me

November 03, 2023

Hi Dawn, The domestic travel insurance on this card is only available if you have a return domestic flight booked as part of the trip, and may not be suitable cover for issues that arise on a cruise. If you want to discuss specific details of the cover, you can contact Allianz (the insurance provider) on 1300 135 271. You can also compare cruise travel insurance policies on Finder. I hope this helps.

October 19, 2023

With the ANZ Rewards Black card , do any restrictions apply to the travel insurance if my wife has a pre existing illness ( cancer ) . She has now been clear for 18 months .

Hi Garry, That’s an important question to ask before you travel. You can contact the insurance provider, Allianz, on 1300 135 271 to discuss this with them directly so that you have the most accurate information. I hope this helps.

Can I use the rewards black credit card to pay my mortgage every week?

October 06, 2023

Hi Aaron, Your mortgage repayments should always be made using your own money, not credit. If your goal is to earn more points, Finder has a guide on a hands-on strategy for using a credit card and an offset account that may be of interest. If you’re experiencing mortgage stress and need help with your mortgage payments, talk to your lender about relief options. You can also speak to a financial counsellor for free by calling the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007.

October 04, 2023

Hi Amy I have an ANZ Rewards Black credit card, just wondering if I’m covered on a short domestic cruise, thanks.

Hi Linda, If the trip includes a return domestic flight that was paid for with your ANZ Rewards Black, or if you meet the other requirements and have a return domestic flight ticket, it’s possible there may be some cover related to cancellations, additional expenses and delays. But it’s a good idea to check directly with the insurance provider, Allianz, by calling 1300 135 271 or using the online form at https://travel.agaassistance.com.au/anz/travel-insurance . I hope this helps.

The ANZ Rewards Black Card is for you if you are seeking to earn the highest possible rewards and bonus points, planning to regularly make use of the complimentary extras, and mean to pay off your balance in full at the end of each statement period to avoid the high interest rate on balances carried beyond the payment due date.

ANZ only specifies that you need a good credit score. The range for good credit scores varies depending on the credit reporting body:

  • For Experian : 625 - 699
  • For Equifax : 622 - 725
  • For illion : 500 - 699

If you have a higher score, putting you in the ‘Very good’ or ‘Excellent’ bracket, so much the better. ANZ uses all three credit reporting bodies. Also, in general, ANZ says that eligibility depends on your not having applied for too many credit cards recently. (See FAQs for more details on how credit reporting agencies calculate credit scores).

Tip

Check your credit score using Finty’s free credit score service.

How do I improve my credit score?

If you have a credit card, using it responsibly is a good way to build up your credit score. This will help you get better deals for credit cards and other financial products. Irresponsible use of credit cards can damage your credit score.

Here are some ideas on how to improve your credit score over time:

  • Check your credit file by checking your score.
  • Go through the credit report periodically to see that it is fair and accurate.
  • Remove any significant inaccuracies from your credit report.
  • Use services offered by your bank such as automated payments to avoid penalties.
  • Have a credit card and keep your debt-to-credit ratio low by using less than your total available credit. Instead of always borrowing up to the credit limit, you may want to ask for an increased credit limit and borrow well below that limit to improve your credit score.
  • Avoid applying for too many credit cards at once.
  • Make timely payment on your loans and credit card and avoid penalties.
  • Be reliable and prompt with payments to demonstrate your creditworthiness to potential lenders.
  • Using different types of credit responsibly – such as car loans , home loans and credit cards – will help raise your credit score.
  • Instead of closing rarely used credit cards, keep the account open. (Check the annual fees first!)
  • Avoid changing jobs and houses frequently because it comes out as a sign of instability and lack of staying power.

What are credit reporting bodies?

Credit reporting bodies or agencies are independent organisations that use secure means to gather and distribute credit and personal information about people and businesses to financial institutions. These reports are used by banks and other lenders in making their lending decisions.

What is a 'good' credit score in Australia?

Different credit reporting bodies – illion, Equifax and Experian – use different credit scoring systems. Experian and illion use a system where the highest score is 1000. Equifax has a top score of 1200.

Here's how they define good, very good and excellent credit scores for Australians:

What credit reporting bodies does ANZ use?

ANZ gives information to, and uses information from, three credit reporting bodies in Australia: Equifax, illion and Experian.

My application for a card was declined. Will this affect my credit score and report?

Declined loans and credit applications will affect your credit score because they were most likely preceded by a ‘hard enquiry’ on your credit file from the card issuer. Such enquiries may lower your score by one to five points, but will only impact your credit score for about a year. However, this record will remain in your credit file for two years. That is why ANZ Rewards Black Card and other credit cards from ANZ (and most other credit card companies) say that not applying for multiple credit cards recently is an eligibility criterion.

What are ‘everyday purchases’?

When credit card companies say ‘everyday purchases’ they are referring to general living expenses and meal and entertainment expenses.

Basically it includes things people spend on regularly, such as:

  • Your weekly groceries
  • Fuel expenses for your car
  • Telephone, gas and electricity bills
  • Water rates and council rates
  • Movie tickets
  • Shopping for clothes
  • Subscriptions for internet, streaming services, mobile phone plans, magazines
  • Gym membership
  • Insurance for health, life, car, home, pets etc.

Are there some things I can't use my card for?

ANZ credit card conditions of use say that the following transactions/payments may be blocked:

  • Gambling transactions
  • Transactions that may breach any laws or regulations in Australia or any other country
  • Transactions that involve ‘any person (natural, corporate or
  • governmental) that is itself sanctioned or is connected, directly or indirectly, to any person that is sanctioned under economic and trade sanctions imposed by the United Nations, the European Union or any country’.
  • Transactions that may directly or indirectly involve the proceeds of, or be applied for the purposes of, unlawful conduct.
