18 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions & Things to Do in the UAE

Written by Jess Lee Updated Jul 26, 2022

The iconic high-rise skylines of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, rimming long sandy shorelines, have made the United Arab Emirates a popular destination for anyone wanting to mix a city break with some beach time.

Landmark tourist attractions, such as Dubai's towering Burj Khalifa and Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Zayed Mosque and Louvre museum offer sightseeing within easy reach of the city sand.

A host of massive malls have made both cities renowned among shoppers as the best places to visit, and both offer vacationing families plenty of purely fun things to do, with an impressive list of major theme parks.

There's more to the UAE than the contemporary glitz of its two major cities, though.

The country's interior of desert and Hajar Mountains are all about big-sky scenery and adventure activities, from 4WD trips across a landscape of rippling dunes to taking on the world's longest zipline over the jagged contours of Jebel Jais.

There's also much more history here than those modern skyscrapers would have you believe. Sharjah and Al Ain are two cities dedicated to promoting Emirati heritage.

For ideas on the best places to visit, see our list of the top attractions and things to do in the United Arab Emirates.

1. Take a Beach Break

2. zoom up dubai's burj khalifa, 3. admire abu dhabi's sheikh zayed mosque, 4. get active on jebel jais in ras al-khaimah, 5. visit the louvre abu dhabi, 6. experience the uae's desert landscapes, 7. family fun at the theme parks, 8. explore dubai's al fahidi quarter, 9. view sharjah art museum's renowned art collection, 10. take a road trip up jebel hafeet, 11. dhow rides on dubai creek, 12. head into the hajar mountains, 13. take the kids to dubai aquarium & underwater zoo, 14. shop in the souks, 15. get active in hatta, 16. skydive over the desert or the city, 17. relax in historic al ain, 18. visit the sharjah museum of islamic civilization.

Camel on a United Arab Emirates beach

For many visitors, a UAE vacation centers around the beach.

Late October to May, while temperatures plummet over Europe and North America, is high season here as the UAE's punishing summer heat gives way to winter's beach weather.

Dubai and Abu Dhabi are the more obvious beach choices, offering city sightseeing, shopping, and theme parks in easy reach of the sand.

For sun-and-sand vacations in Dubai, luxury resorts are focused along the coast west of the central city. In particular, the beaches around Jumeirah and Dubai Marina offer plenty of family-oriented, five star resorts dedicated to beach time.

Abu Dhabi's luxury resorts rim the shoreline of the city's various islands, so resort areas are more scattered across the city than in Dubai. Saadiyat Island, Marina Breakwater, and Khor Al Maqta are the areas offering some of the best beach-focused resorts in town.

Away from these two destinations, though, there are more beach options.

The beach resorts of Ras Al-Khaimah and Ajman in particular are favorite city getaways, while on the UAE's eastern coast, Al Aqah beach in the Emirate of Fujairah is a popular option for beachgoers who want to head away from the crowds.

Burj Khalifa

The Burj Khalifa is one of the United Arab Emirates most famous buildings and the soaring sky-high landmark of Dubai.

Not only is it the world's tallest building (at 828 meters high) it also lays claim to the titles of tallest freestanding structure in the world, highest observation deck in the world, and elevator with the longest travel distance in the world.

A trip up to the observation deck with its panoramic views across Dubai, is on most visitor itineraries, both to marvel at this modern engineering and architectural feat and to admire the dizzying views of Dubai laid out below you.

Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a mammoth modern mosque of incredible beauty.

Fusing contemporary design with traditional craftsmanship, the mosque harmoniously blends modern and ancient styles and techniques to create a new interpretation of Islamic architecture.

Both its exterior and interior utilize lavish amounts of gold, mosaic tiles, and glasswork to decorate the mosque's white marble stonework, while the architecture itself blends the various mosque designs of multiple Islamic empires.

Inside, the prayer hall is laid with the world's largest hand-knotted carpet (5,700 square meters) and illuminated by chandeliers made from 24-karat gold and crystals. While outside, the vast marble courtyard incorporates a mammoth swirling floral floor mosaic of semi-precious stones.

Hiker enjoying the view from Jebel Jais

The highest peak in the United Arab Emirates, Jebel Jais in the emirate of Ras Al-Khaimah is a major activity center.

You could come here simply to admire the vista of rugged Hajar Mountain peaks rippling down to the coastline plateau from the viewing platform terrace near the summit, or you can choose to match those views with some adventure activities.

The most popular mountain experience here is the Jebel Jais Flight, the world's longest zipline, which runs down the side of the peak for over two kilometers, reaching speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour.

For less speed thrills and more mountain time, Jebel Jais's Via Ferrata climbing route offers guided tours during the cooler months, while independent hikers can choose from six marked trails on the lower reaches of the mountain.

Louvre Abu Dhabi

The newest and most spectacular museum in the United Arab Emirates, the Louvre Abu Dhabi takes visitors on a journey through human history.

The collection has been sourced from across the globe and through the ages, beginning from the earliest human settlements to works by the major names in today's contemporary art scene, to demonstrate the links between cultures and civilizations that has threaded through humanity's narrative.

Whether you're interested in world history or art, the museum is a major draw, while the stark and ultra-modern architecture of the complex, designed by prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel, is an attraction in itself.

Tracks in the desert

For those with an adventurous streak, make a beeline for the UAE's desert reaches that stretch across the country's southern interior.

There are plenty of adventure activities on offer, from 4WD trips across the desert dunes to camel trekking, sandboarding, and dune buggy trips.

Popular desert day trips from Dubai or Abu Dhabi usually include dinner at a desert camp after a 4WD journey into the dunes, and offer time at camp for other activities such as sandboarding or short camel rides.

Other desert tours allow more scope for wildlife spotting and specialized desert operators also offer overnight camping amid the dunes.

The desert interiors of the emirates of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Ras Al-Khaimah are also home to a number of luxury desert resorts, where stays are all about soaking up the dune scenery and heading out on desert activities.

Entrance to Wild Wadi Park in Dubai

  • In Dubai, Dubai Parks & Resorts offers four major theme parks rolled into one: Motiongate, dedicated to rides themed around Hollywood films; Bollywood Parks; Legoland Dubai; and Legoland Water Park.
  • The city is also home to IMG Worlds of Adventure with rides, roller coasters, and experiences themed around both Marvel storylines and characters for older kids, and the Cartoon Network for little ones.
  • If you just want to splash about for the day, though, Dubai's Wild Wadi Water Park is your best bet in town.
  • The best water park for older kids and teenagers wanting something more than simply slides is Wadi Adventure in Al Ain .
  • Here, it's all about white water kayaking, surfing, and wakeboarding, though there are swimming pools here, too, for when you need a rest from all the activities.
  • Abu Dhabi is home to two of the country's most famous branded theme parks both on Yas Island.
  • Ferrari World is a thrill-seeker's dream come true, with the world's fastest roller coaster as its landmark ride, while Warner Bros World offers six worlds to explore, from Cartoon Junction for small children to Metropolis and Gotham City with rides and attractions themed around DC Comic storylines.

Bastakia

The Al Fahidi quater of Dubai (also known as Bastakia) is the last remaining fragment of Old Dubai and shouldn't be missed. This small heritage area really evokes the simpler, gentler past of the city before skyscrapers took over the skyline.

The narrow lanes within the neighborhood are lined with carefully restored traditional buildings in typical Arabian architectural styles, many with the wind tower features, which kept houses cool before air-conditioning became common.

Many of the buildings now house small museums, art galleries, and craft shops, allowing you to enter the houses and see typical Arabian interiors.

The Sheikh Mohammed Center for Cultural Understanding is also based within the quarter and offers walking tours focused on the Al Fahidi quarter along with on-site traditional meals for visitors who want to experience local culinary heritage.

Interior of the Sharjah Art Museum

Sharjah Art Museum is home to one of the world's most renowned collections of work by Arab artists and art hailing from the Middle East.

Its permanent collection includes both pieces by the biggest names in contemporary Arab art from throughout the 20th century to the present, displayed in the Barjeel Collection Wing, and art from the 18th and 19th century created by both Arab artists and the European artists who focused on the Middle East in their work.

The museum is noted for its program of temporary exhibitions, which bring exhibits from both prominent and up-and-coming artists to the museum's lower floor galleries throughout the year.

Jebel Hafeet

Jebel Hafeet, on the edge of the oasis city of Al Ain is one of the most popular destinations for a quick and easy nature break out of Abu Dhabi city.

The cool mountain air on the summit also offers a respite from the coastal heat during summer.

This is the second highest peak in the United Arab Emirates, and far-reaching, sumptuous panoramas across the mountain's reaches and down to Al Ain greet you all the way up to the top on the winding road.

At the top of the twisting switchback mountain road, you are rewarded with being able to see across the area's vast sweep of desert stretching out in all directions.

Dubai Creek Dhow Ride

The Burj Khalifa may give you that famous skyline view from up high, but the most iconic Dubai views are still taken from the water.

Dubai Creek slices through the city, and the best way to experience Dubai is from one of the beautiful dhows (traditional Arabic boats) that ply the creek.

Sunset cruises (which often come with entertainment and dinner) are particularly popular among visitors, as you get to watch the lights of the high-rises begin to twinkle in the dusk.

For a budget cruise, though, just hop on one of the ablas (local ferries), which ply the water between Bur Dubai and Deira.

Hajar Mountains

The Hajar Mountains scythe through the northern interior of the UAE.

For nature lovers, the wadis (dry riverbeds or valleys) hidden within this region are prime territory for hiking, climbing, and bird-watching. Specialized adventure tour companies in Dubai and Ras Al-Khaimah offer wadi tours focused on these activities.

The Hajar Mountains are also great for road trips simply to take in the scenery of rolling, barren mountains.

Some of the tiny Hajar Mountain villages in the emirates of Ras Al-Khaimah and Fujairah are topped by historic watchtowers and small forts, which make good stop-offs along the way.

One of the most popular Hajar Mountain bases is the town of Hatta, which has become a major activity center in recent years, with kayaking on Hatta Lake and mountain biking in the surrounding area.

Aquarium Tunnel at Dubai Aquarium

Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo is one of the city's best family experiences but also offers plenty of activities and things to do for the more adventurous.

The 48-meter-long Aquarium Tunnel, with 190-degree views into the aquarium, featuring over 300 sharks and rays among the 140 species living here, is a fascinating step into the underwater world.

But as well as the Aquarium Tunnel, there are opportunities to visit a penguin enclosure, a crocodile enclosure, and to witness the daily shark and ray feeding times.

For the more adventurous, Dubai Aquarium offers a variety of scuba diving experiences, including shark diving.

Shoes for sale in a Dubai souk

For many visitors to the United Arab Emirates, shopping is one of the main attractions.

There are megalithic, glitzy malls by the dozen, but for a more local approach to shopping jaunts, you can't beat the souks (bazaars) .

In Dubai, the Deira and Bur Dubai districts, facing each other across Dubai Creek, are where you head for traditional shopping, with the Bur Dubai Souk, the city's famed Gold Souk, and the Spice Souk all here.

In Sharjah, the Central Souk is one of the city's landmark buildings, while nearby Souk Al Jubail is a foodie traveler favorite destination.

Abu Dhabi has also got its souk areas. The most popular is the modern World Trade Center Souk, designed by architect Norman Foster, with its shops and stalls selling handicrafts from across the Arab world.

Hatta Dam

The Hajar Mountain village of Hatta is a prime base for travelers who want to experience a slice of the UAE's Hajar Mountain scenery.

While the coast swelters in summer, temperatures here in the mountains, although still hot, tend to be dry rather than humid, making Hatta a popular weekend getaway for Dubai locals.

The turquoise waters of the vast Hatta Dam, surrounded by jagged mountain slopes, is the main tourist attraction, and many people are here chiefly to kayak or boat on the lake.

If you're looking for more activities, Hatta is home to several hiking and mountain biking trails across the surrounding mountain wadis and slopes, many with phenomenal Hajar Mountain vistas along the way. Due to this, it's become a top destination in the UAE for adventure travel and nature-based journeys.

There's also horse riding amid the Hajar foothills and, if you want bird's-eye views of Hatta's mountain scenery, tandem-paragliding.

Dubai skydiving

For the ultimate aerial views on your UAE trip, take to the skies for a tandem sky dive.

Tandem sky diving experiences are offered at two very different locations in Dubai:

Either opt for the city site , where sky divers take in vistas over the Dubai coastline with bird's-eye panoramas of the Palm Jumeirah island complex below, or head out to the desert site for views of undulating desert dunes and arid plateau as you descend.

Whichever you choose, both experiences provide one of the most thrilling sightseeing opportunities in the country.

Sky diving is available throughout the year at the city site, and the desert site closes during the summer months. Be aware, though, that sky diving is a weather-dependent activity, so it can be called off due to wind and visibility issues. If this happens, you will be offered either a full refund or a rescheduled spot.

Al Jahili Fort in Al Ain's oasis

The old caravan route stop-off of Al Ain, with its sprawling date palm oasis, is today a favorite getaway destination from Abu Dhabi.

For families, the major attractions are Al Ain's vast zoo, acclaimed for its conservation work and home to a safari-style experience, and the Wadi Adventure water park , with its white water rafting facility, as well as a bundle of more typical water park rides.

Once home to the ruling Al Nayyan family, Al Ain is also one of the UAE's most important historic destinations, with the Al Jahili Fort, Al Ain Palace Museum, and Qasr Al Muwaiji, all well-preserved remnants from the era before the oil boom.

To peek into the deeper past, the 5,000-year-old Umm Al Nar tombs at Al Ain's Hili Archaeological Park are one of the country's UNESCO World Heritage sites .

Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilisation

Sharjah's Museum of Islamic Civilization is the only museum in the country to focus on the breadth of Islamic history.

The collection inside traces Islam's course from the very early years to the spread of the Islamic empires through Asia and Africa, and explores the vast diversity of culture and art throughout the Islamic world.

As well as a wealth of artifacts and art objects, certain displays focus on separate facets of the Islamic faith and specific eras in Islam's history. Some displays feature rare manuscripts and religious documents, and tourists will find them easy to understand thanks to excellent information boards throughout.

null UAE tourism sector performance in Q1 2022 exceeds pre-pandemic growth rates

facts about tourism in the uae

  • Hotel establishments generate AED 11 billion in revenues with a 20% growth compared to the same period in 2019
  • 80% hotel occupancy rate among the highest, globally

H.E. Dr. Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, Minister of State for Entrepreneurship and Small and Medium Enterprises and Chairman of the UAE Tourism Council, revealed that the UAE’s tourism sector achieved a new growth milestone in Q1 2022, underlining its competitiveness at both regional and global levels. H.E. attributed the sector’s latest achievement to the unlimited support and directives of the UAE’s wise leadership and its interest in this vital sector, which is deemed one of the future sectors and a key focus area in the UAE’s development vision for the next 50 years.

The Minister explained that during the first quarter of this year, the national tourism sector exceeded the growth rates recorded not only in 2020 and 2021, but also during the same period in 2019, which is the benchmark for measuring recovery and growth rates in most countries today. It is one of the best years in terms of economic growth in general and tourism in particular, and this confirms the strong comeback of the sector thanks to the forward-looking vision of the UAE’s wise leadership. Equally important was the concerted national efforts to develop national tourism, provide a supportive environment and integrated incentives for the development of tourism products, offer adequate tourism infrastructure in the country, and focus on the delivery of high value-added services, he said.

According to tourism figures for Q1 2022, the country's hotel establishments attracted nearly 6 million visitors who spent 25 million hotel nights, reflecting a growth of 10% compared to the same period in 2019. The average duration of hotel guest stays reached 25% during the same period, up from 3 nights to 4 nights. Moreover, the occupancy rate of hotel establishments in the country during this period achieved 80% growth, which is one of the highest globally. Hotel establishments also generated a total revenue of AED 11 billion with a 20% growth compared to the same period in 2019 and resumed operations at full capacity of approximately 200,000 hotel rooms.

Furthermore, Q1 2022 saw a resurgence and a strong comeback of inward tourism flows from foreign markets, as hotel establishments in various emirates hosted nearly 4 million international tourists. India, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, Russia, and the United States of America topped the list of international tourists.

H.E. Al Falasi explained that these indicators underscore the strength of the tourism product and the pioneering services and attractive tourism destinations that the UAE offers, as well as its sophisticated tourism infrastructure. They also reflect the growing confidence of visitors in the national tourism sector and the UAE’s reputation as a safe and favorable destination capable of providing a rich and distinguished tourism experience.

In addition, H.E. noted the important role that the major events hosted by the UAE over the past months played in supporting the sector. These include Expo 2020 Dubai, which successfully attracted more than 24 million visitors over six months, and ‘Worlds’s Coolest Winter’ campaign in its second edition, which over one and a half months generated a total revenue of AED 1.5 billion and attracted more than 1.3 million local tourists.

Furthermore, H.E. commended the efforts of relevant authorities, various local tourism departments, and the strong partnership with the tourism private sector in the country, which was vital in achieving these positive results. He also highlighted the importance of further integration of roles among tourism development entities in order to achieve the UAE’s vision in this regard and provide the best tourism services and products for domestic and international tourists. These efforts are key to consolidating the UAE's position as a preferred and sustainable destination for tourism, investments and tourism projects.

In this article, I’ll be discussing both the common and uncommon facts about Dubai. Read on!

35 Fascinating Facts About Dubai

Let’s start the article with one of the most iconic facts about Dubai.

The Burj Khalifa in Dubai is the tallest building and skyscraper in the entire world. It has a height of 828 metres or 2,717 feet and around 163 floors!

Inside the Burj Khalifa, you’ll find residential areas, commercial areas, and restaurants too. The tallest restaurant, Atmosphere, is located on the 122nd floor of the Burj Khalifa.

Once you visit Dubai, you’ll feel like you’re truly in a melting pot of cultures. After all, there are only 11.48% (1.17 million) Emiratis living in Dubai- the remaining 88.52% (9.0 million) are immigrants from different parts of the world.

You’ll mostly find Indians, Pakistanis, Egyptians, and Filipinos living in Dubai.

These facts about Dubai prove that the country has some of the strictest laws.

As per Dubai’s laws , if you’ve not paid instalments for your debt, you’ll be imprisoned for up to three years. Still, this doesn’t absolve the person from the debt!

Instead, the debtor needs to arrange the money within a month. If they can’t, the creditor has the right to send the person to jail indefinitely until they get their money back.

We hear about ATMs giving out cash but have you heard about one that gives out gold?

Certain ATMs in Dubai allow you to withdraw gold in the form of gold bars. You just need to specify the weight. Amazing, huh?!

One of the reasons why many people want to relocate to Dubai is its tax-free policy.

The government doesn’t take any tax on your income unless you own an oil business (55% tax). So, you don’t have to worry about filing taxes if you’re living in Dubai!

Keep in mind that you might have to pay a service tax of 10% in hotels, cinemas, and even restaurants though.

Since 1971, UAE’s official language has been Arabic.

Although there are many expats living in Dubai, Arabic continues to remain the main language for government officials.

The most common language in Dubai is English. Other languages like Hindi, Urdu, and Tagalog are also widely spoken.

35 Fascinating Facts About Dubai

The World Expo is one of the largest international events that takes place every five years. In 2020, the World Expo took place in Dubai. However, due to the pandemic, it was shifted to 2021 and 2022.

The country received more than 24 million visitors between October 2021 and March 2022.

UAE also spent more than $7 billion to prepare the city for Expo 2020! It’s estimated that the Expo will add $42.2 billion to UAE’s economy by 2042.

You can eat and drink at the metro stations and platforms. However, it’s prohibited to carry food and drinks inside the metro. You’ll be fined 100 Dirhams for it!

Dubai mainly used to be a desert before it turned into a megacity.

Therefore, the city receives scanty rainfall (around 3.7 inches annually) between December and April. The wettest month is generally March.

Here’s one of the facts about Dubai to consider if you’re planning to visit the country.

Public display of affection, like hugging or kissing publicly, is forbidden in Dubai. It may lead to severe punishment, including imprisonment in certain cases.

These rules are set in place due to the Islamic background of the city as modesty is given extreme importance.

Although the UAE falls in the Arab belt, alcohol isn’t banned here, except in Sharjah.

In Dubai, you need to be over 21 to consume alcohol. You also need to show proof declaring that you’re older than 21.

However, the legal age for drinking in Abu Dhabi, a city just down the road from Dubai, is 18. Still, many places may restrict alcohol if you’re below 21.

Amongst all the cool facts about Dubai, this one is truly saddening!

There are 2.3 males for 1 female in Dubai.

One of the major reasons behind this gap is that many young men from third-world countries come to Dubai as immigrants for working opportunities in male-dominated industries.

If you’re a shopaholic, these facts about Dubai will make you want to visit!

The Dubai Mall is the largest mall in the entire world as it is spread across an area of 502,000 square metres!

Dubai citizens don’t hold back on anything, even animals!

Even though you’ll normally come across dogs and cats as pets, there are a few Emiratis who keep exotic pets.

There are more than 600 unusual animals being kept as pets in the country. Some of them even keep lions, tigers, and cheetahs- something that I certainly do not recommend!

There are many snow rides in the adjacent snow park too.

When I think about Dubai, many of us imagine the stunning skyscrapers! So, let’s talk about some facts about Dubai and its skyscrapers.

Once upon a time, oil production contributed 50% towards Dubai’s GDP. Over the years however, it has steadily decreased. Presently, it simply contributes just 1%.

The rest of Dubai’s economy is highly dependent on tourism (20%) and business.

The reason behind diversifying the sources is that when the need for fossil fuels decreases in the future, the country won’t be affected.

Here’s one of the most astonishing facts about Dubai.

UAE dining etiquette  centers around keeping the food and yourself clean. You should wash your hands before you sit down to eat.

You should pick up glasses and finger foods with your right hand, even if you’re left-handed. Many people in the UAE use their left hand to clean themselves, so eating with your left hand would be seen as dirtying the food.

Do not put your personal items like your cell phone on the table. This will free up room for the plates and prevent you from knocking things over. You can leave papers on the table if you are conducting business or need to show someone something.

19. Be Courteous During Ramadan

Facts about Dubai Ramadan

Ramadan is the holiest month in the Muslim calendar. Observant Muslims fast during the day and conduct prayers while they are awake.

It is a criminal offense to eat food in public during Ramadan. While you can eat food indoors, you should avoid doing so in front of other people so you don’t offend anyone.

You should avoid playing music or dancing in the street during the month as well. Try to dress conservatively and avoid houses of worship unless you are going to pray.

National holidays in the UAE

With around 200 nationalities represented in Dubai, how people dress  is incredibly varied – yet the traditional attire of the UAE is bold and distinctive. You can see it all across the city.

Emirati national dress is a symbol of pride and identity that has been designed with the dual intent of providing comfort and adhering to religious beliefs.  In Dubai, men wear an ankle-length, loose-fitting garment made of white cotton, known as a kandoora or dishdasha . A ghutrah covers the head and is held in place by the agal , a type of black cord. This garment was originally used to protect the face from the harsh desert environment

Traditionally, women in Dubai wear an abaya – a long, black flowing light coat over their clothing. This is worn over Western clothes or a traditional long-sleeved full-length dress known as a jalabeya . A black scarf called a shayla is often draped over the head.

Hasan al-diyafa  (what we know as ‘hospitality’) is an intrinsic part of the Bedouin lifestyle that can be traced back to the traditions of life in the desert . Many also consider that religious beliefs and honouring one’s guests go hand in hand – and these customs are very much alive in Dubai today. We explain the basics.

Marhaba : The Arabic word for 'welcome', used when entering someone’s home.

Salaam alaykum :  'Peace upon you' – to which you reply walaykum salaam .

Gahwa : Guests will often be served Arabic coffee before a meal. Remember to hand over your empty cup with your right hand.

Modesty : Visiting a local home? Consider loose, long clothing that covers your body. You would typically leave your shoes at the door.

Nose to nose : In the UAE, many Emirati men will touch noses or peck on the cheek when they first meet. Visitors are not expected to follow the tradition.

The majlis : Many homes have a reception room reserved for special occasions or entertaining guests. It would typically involve low seating and cushions, dating back to life in tents.

Hands and feet : Men would shake hands with everyone present, but be aware that some ladies may not wish to do so. When you sit, pointing your feet towards someone can be considered offensive.

Dinner : Evening meals would typically be served on a huge, round platter – be prepared to use your hands!

Calligraphy : The Arabic alphabet is the second most widely used across the globe. This decorative way of writing is known as khatt , which derives from the word for 'line', 'design' or 'construction'.

Henna : Originally worn by brides across the region to bring good luck to their marriage, henna body art  remains a popular beauty treatment in Dubai to this day.

Perfumery: The Arab world is known for bold fragrances and many modern perfume brands combine traditional base aromas with a multitude of modern notes. Visit Al Shindagha Museum to find out all about the art of perfumery.

Pottery: People have been working with clay since the third millennium BCE. Aside from decorative vases and incense containers, earthen pots remain highly effective for cooling drinking water.

Dubai music, celebrations and festivities

Music :  Music has historically been connected with poetry, with traditions such as al shila  and  al wana  combining music and verse. In terms of modern music, Dubai now has a thriving scene that includes both homegrown artists strumming at local cafés, and international superstars selling out arenas and concert halls across the city.

Dance: Visitors may be lucky to see men lined up in a row, performing ayyala , holding thin bamboo canes and moving in sync to a percussive rhythm. Other forms of dance include razfa , which often involves reciting lines of poetry and handling other objects, such as daggers or rifles.

Poetry : Forms of poetry in the UAE have influences from both near and far, with many notable poets originating from the Emirates. Many poems are immortalised in a calligraphic style, bringing them to life with striking visuals, and Nabati poetry is a key element of Emirati heritage.

Weddings : It was once a tradition for weddings to be held within a family home, decorated with flags and bunting. Celebrations would continue for around three days and a feast would be prepared. These days, a wedding celebration is likely to be hosted in a banquet hall at a hotel or function venue, with discreet celebrations for male and female guests.

The buoyant tourism sector’s contribution to the UAE’s national economy is expected to rise to Dh236 billion in 2024, positioning the country right on track to achieve its goal of boosting tourism’s GDP share to Dh450 billion by 2031, according to the country's Minister of Economy.

Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Riyadh, said the tourism sectors’ share in the country’s gross domestic product grew by a significant 26 per cent in 2023 compared to that of 2022 and surpassed 2019 levels by 14 per cent.

Tourism’s contribution to the country's GDP amounted to Dh220 billion, accounting for 11.7 per cent. “This is expected to rise in 2024 to Dh236 billion, equivalent to 12 per cent of the country's GDP,” he said, quoting a recent report by the World Travel and Tourism Council.

The minister, who led the UAE delegation at the Riyadh forum, said the National Tourism Strategy 2031 aims to increase the contribution of the UAE tourism sector to the national GDP to Dh450 billion, raising the country's profile as the best tourism identity by the next decade. “Besides, through the launch of the National Sustainable Aviation Fuel Roadmap, the country has set an ambitious target to achieve annual production of up to 700 million litres of sustainable aviation fuel by 2030,” Al Marri said at the conference titled “International Cooperation, Growth, and Energy for Development.”

“In addition, this vital sector provided 809,000 jobs in various activities and tourism fields in the country in 2023, equivalent to 12.3 per cent of the total labour market. With five per cent growth from 2022, exceeding 2019 levels with 11.4 per cent growth, the number of jobs it creates is expected to reach 833,000 in 2024. There are currently 1,235 hotels in the UAE providing a total of 210,000 rooms for guests and visitors,” Al Marri said.

The minister noted that efforts are underway in collaboration with other GCC partners to launch the unified GCC tourist visa. “Once it comes into effect, it will contribute to highlighting the diverse tourism destinations in GCC countries, attracting and retaining tourists for longer periods, thus increasing the number of hotel guests and making the region one of the leading destinations for regional and international tourists alike.”

“The UAE is committed to promoting sustainability, not just in the tourism industry but across diverse economic and environmental sectors, safeguarding resources, wealth, and natural reserves,” he said, emphasising that sustainability is key to boosting the tourism sector’s growth in the immediate future, particularly given the current global environmental and social challenges. “It calls for strengthening collaborative efforts across all fronts and levels to attain a harmony between economic and environmental progress as well as social accountability.” The minister also stressed the importance of ecotourism in supporting the sustainability of the tourism sector and preserving natural reserves and desert attractions.

The minister highlighted the UAE's commitment to enhancing the regional and global tourism infrastructure to ensure the sustainability of the sector. He indicated that there are challenges ahead for sustainable tourism, most notably the necessity to upskill the workforce, improving their performance and expertise in tourism, and fostering innovation and creativity across various tourism fields and activities.

The UAE, the minister added, attaches significant importance to the tourism sector, recognising it as a key contributor to national economic growth and enhancing its competitiveness and diversity. “The country has successfully highlighted its tourism diversity in the past phase, promoting the unique features and characteristics of all seven emirates, with the aim of attracting more global companies to its markets. These achievements encourage national and foreign investments in tourism projects, thereby consolidating the UAE's position on the travel and tourism landscape at regional and global levels.”
