You’ll need to pay for a new NZeTA if you change your travel dates by more than 2 years.

The good news is that you can apply for your visa online, and it’s now easier than ever before. In fact, it’s faster and cheaper than a paper application, leaving you more time to plan the fun stuff.

No matter if you’re coming from Shanghai or Suva – you can apply for your visa online from anywhere, at any time. And if you’re already in New Zealand and want to stay longer, you can apply for that too.

To get started, visit the immigration website to find out if you need a visa, and the requirements you’ll need to meet.

To apply, you’ll need to upload your documents, a passport-style photo, and pay with a credit or debit card.

We can’t start processing your visa unless everything’s there, so double check you’ve included all the required documents before you press submit.

You can even start your application, save it, and finish it later.

Once you’ve submitted your application, we’ll let you know if you need to send us your passport, or if we can issue an e-visa. Simple!

Most work, student and visitor visas can be applied for online. Applying online is often faster and less expensive than sending in a paper application form. When you apply online we can also issue your visa electronically so you won't have to send us your passport.

If you come to New Zealand on holiday, you'll need to get either a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) or a visitor visa — unless you're an Australian citizen.

US and Mexico citizens travelling on valid "regular" passports do not have to pay visa fees for visitor, work, or student visas.

All applicants are required to pay VAC fees of US$38 per application.

There are three available options for people enquiring about applying for a visa for New Zealand, or enquiring if a visa is needed:

• The Immigration New Zealand website (external link) . This website not only answers all questions relating to New Zealand visas, but is now also the portal through which an applicant can apply for their visa - through the Online system. By selecting the "Contact Us" option the enquirer can also access the Knowledge Base Q&A section of the website.
• Call the Immigration Contact Centre (ICC) in New Zealand at 011 64 9 914 4100. The ICC is operated 24 hours a day for 365 days of the year. It has staff fluent in various languages that are fully trained in all aspects of immigration policy and procedure.

New Zealand Visitor Visa (Tourist Visa): Eligibility, Requirements and Application Process

The New Zealand Visitor Visa is the general tourist visa available to non-visa-waiver nationalities.

Applications can be lodged either online or on paper. It’s cheaper and simpler to do it online as you won’t have to pay fees for a Visa Application Center and couriers. It’s also recommended by the New Zealand Immigration.

• Multiple entries: Not more than 6 months in any 12-month period
• Single entry: 9 months

Visitor visa validity

In most cases, the New Zealand visitor visa is valid for 3 years with multiple entries.

For Chinese passports, the visa is valid for 5 years, whereas for US passports, the validity is 4 years.

Single-entry visitor visas have 6 months validity.

If your passport expires before that, you are allowed to transfer your visa to your new passport. 

Duration of stay

Multiple-entry visas let you visit New Zealand for up to 6 months at a time. You can spend a maximum of 6 months within any 12 months. 

For example, if you stay in New Zealand for 4 months from January 1 to May 1, then leave and come back on June 1, you will only be allowed to stay 2 more months, i.e. until August 1. Afterwards, you can return to New Zealand no earlier than January 1.

Single-entry visas allow you to stay a maximum of 9 months. This visa cannot allow you to stay in New Zealand for more than 9 months within the last 18 months, for example, if you had another visa before that.

Allowed number of entries

Most New Zealand Visitor visas allow multiple entries.

Single-entry visas are issued if you express your need to stay in New Zealand for longer than 6 months.

Allowed ports of entry

You can enter through any international airport or port.

If you arrive in New Zealand in a different location by private yacht or private aircraft, you must report to a customs port or airport without delay and complete an arrival card there. 

When to apply

• Earliest: 3 months before you travel
• Latest: 1 month before you travel

New Zealand Visitor Visa Requirements

Who requires a visitor visa.

The New Zealand Visitor Visa is required for all nationalities who want to travel to New Zealand for tourism, EXCEPT for:

• Australian passport holders
• Travelers from visa-waiver countries (they must obtain an NZeTA )
• Transit passengers through Auckland International Airport not leaving the transit area (must obtain NZeTA or Transit Visa depending on eligibility)

Documents required

Include as many documents to support your application as you can. You have to satisfy New Zealand Immigration that:

• You are who you say you are
• You won’t be a risk to public health
• You are of good character without a substantial criminal record and not a threat to the public
• You have enough money to support yourself
• You are a genuine tourist visitor who will not overstay or work illegally.

To do this, attach the following documents:

Identity Documents

• Valid Passport or certificate of identity (valid for at least 3 more months after the intended departure date from New Zealand)
• 1 acceptable photo (for online applications)
• Residence Permit or Visa (if you live in a country different from your citizenship)

Health Documents

• normally nothing required
• Chest X-ray but only if you come from or have spent at least 3 months in the past 5 years in a country that doesn’t have a low incidence of tuberculosis .
• Chest X-ray regardless of where you come from
• Medical Certificate

Character Documents

• Normally nothing required
• You must disclose any criminal record or character issues

Proof of Funds Documents

Include documents that show you have at least 1000 NZD per month, or 400 NZD per month if you’ve already paid for your accommodation. For example:

• Bank statements
• Credit card statements
• Traveler cheques
• Proof of booked and paid accommodation 

Genuine Visitor Documents (Bona-fides)

• Explanation of the reasons for your trip
• Hotel bookings
• Tickets for attractions or events
• Transportation tickets
• Passport pages with entry and exit stamps
• Copy of the letter from that country’s immigration authority declining your application (OR)
• A written explanation of why your application was not successful if the original letter is not available.
• Citizenship statuses
• Evidence of Employment, e.g. leave approval letter from employer with expected return date and pay slips
• Evidence of Study, e.g. university letter, student identity card
• Evidence of Relationships, e.g. family register, marriage certificate
• Evidence of Assets, e.g. deed of ownership for property, proof of business ownership
• Evidence you receive a pension, e.g. retirement certificate, pension slips

Photo requirements

For online applications , your photo must be:

• between 500 KB and 3 MB
• between 900 x 1,200 pixels and 2,250 x 3,000 pixels
• JPG or JPEG format.

For paper applications , your photo must be:

• 35 mm wide and 45 mm high

All photos must:

• Be in portrait, not landscape
• Have even lighting with minimal shadowing
• Be in color, showing natural skin tones
• Be in focus, not blurry
• Not contain red-eye
• Be an unedited original
• Not be a selfie
• Be taken 1.5 meters from the face
• Be taken against a plain, light-colored (but not white) background with no patterns or objects
• Only contain plain clothing patterns
• facing straight to the camera
• Keeping your eyes open and mouth closed
• Not smiling or frowning
• Having long hair tucked behind the ears
• Not wearing any sunglasses or hats (prescription glasses are allowed if there is no reflected light or glare)
• Religious head coverings are allowed as long as your face and hairline are visible

Visitor visa fee

The Visa fee for paper applications depends on your country and the Visa Application Center (VAC) you apply at. You will also have to pay a VAC processing fee and for courier service.

If you apply online, the visa fee for most nationalities is 246 NZD. This includes the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) of 35 NZD.

Citizens of the following Pacific Island Nations pay 171 NZD.

• Federated States of Micronesia
• Marshall Islands
• Papua New Guinea
• Solomon Islands

Processing time

As of the time of writing, 80% of all applications are processed within 4 weeks.

How to apply for visitor visa.

It’s both easier and cheaper to apply online. As such, the following procedure is for online applications.

Follow these steps:

• Go to the New Zealand Immigration website
• You will be redirected to RealMe to create an account
• Start a new application
• Fill in your personal information and attach a photo (the system will check the photo for eligibility)
• Answer questions about your reasons for visiting New Zealand, your character, health, employment history and relationships
• Attach as many documents as you deem necessary
• Pay the visa fee
• Submit the application

You can track your visa status in the dashboard of the application webpage.

Download approved visitor visa

If you made an online application, you must print your eVisa and carry it with you when you travel to New Zealand. You will get a visa label when you make a paper application, in which case you do not need to print anything.

When you arrive in New Zealand, you must complete a Traveler Declaration and seek entrance permission.

Approach an Immigration Officer

You must be able to produce evidence that you will meet the conditions of your visa. Officers usually ask to see:

Visitor Visa Application (1017) for Non-Online Applications

If you cannot apply online or prefer a paper application, you can use the Visitor Visa Application form (1017) for non-online applications. This traditional method requires you to fill out the necessary forms and provide physical copies of your supporting documents.

What to do in case of rejection? 

If your New Zealand visa application is rejected, you have the option to request a reconsideration from Immigration New Zealand under certain conditions. To qualify for reconsideration:

• You must be in New Zealand when making the request.
• You should still hold a valid visa, such as an Interim Visa.
• The reconsideration request must be submitted within 14 calendar days of the initial visa application rejection & it will cost you NZD 250.

For those who submitted a paper visa application or used an alternative online system, a written request for reconsideration is mandatory. The request should include:

• A signed letter in English, explaining the specific aspects you want Immigration New Zealand to reconsider.
• Any supporting evidence or documentation to bolster your request.
• Submission of your passport or certificate of identity.
• Credit card details for the fee, including the card number, expiry date, name of the cardholder, and the cardholder’s signature.

If Immigration New Zealand acknowledges an error in their initial decision, you will be granted a visa. However, if the initial decision stands, no visa will be granted. The reconsideration process takes approximately six months, and a fee of NZD 250 is applicable.

What is it?

With a visitor visa NZ, you can stay in New Zealand for a maximum period of nine months in an 18 month cycle (counting back from expiry date of proposed visa). In certain cases, you may be able to stay 12 months in an 24 months cycle. Often Immigration New Zealand will raise questions whether you are coming to New Zealand for a lawful purpose, in which case you will need to communicate clearly as to why you are coming and try to persuade them that you are unlikely to overstay.

You will need to satisfy each of the following requirements:

• meet general requirements; and
• meet funds requirements; and
• meet outward travel requirements (if relevant); and
• coming to New Zealand for a lawful purpose.

How does it work?

Certain countries have been classified as 'visa-waiver' countries which means people from those countries do not need to obtain a visitor visa when coming to New Zealand. Their visitor visas will be issued for three months upon entry, as long as the purpose of visit is for a lawful purpose.

What are the requirements?

General requirements of visitor visa include paying correct application fee, using prescribed Immigration New Zealand form, meeting health/character requirements, and being a 'bona fide' (genuine) applicant.

You will need to have available funds of at least $1,000 per each month you are intending to stay in New Zealand. If your accommodation has been pre-paid, then $400 per month. Alternatively, you could provide sponsorship from eligible sponsors.

Outward travel

You will need to show that you have the means to leave New Zealand when the visa expires. This could be satisfied by way of travel ticket, sufficient funds to purchase a travel ticket, sponsorship, etc.

Lawful purpose

You must be coming to New Zealand for a lawful purpose, which include - holidaying, sightseeing, family and social visits, amateur sport, business consultation, medical treatment, or guest of government visits. You must not be intending to undertake employment, or a course of study (with exception of short-term studies).

Visiting new zealand for a holiday.

You do not need a visa to visit New Zealand if you are:

• A New Zealand citizen travelling on a New Zealand passport or on a foreign passport that has a New Zealand citizen endorsement
• An Australian citizen travelling on an Australian passport
• A foreign passport holder with a valid visa for New Zealand - including a Permanent Resident visa

If you plan to visit New Zealand for a short period, you need request a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (opens in new window) (NZeTA) before you travel if you are:

• A citizen of a country which has a visa waiver (opens in new window) agreement with New Zealand (you can stay up to three months)

If you don’t meet the above, then you’ll need a visitor visa. The fastest and easiest way to apply for a visitor visa (opens in new window) is online.

Before travelling to New Zealand, you need to make sure your passport is valid for at least three months longer than your expected departure date.

Be sure to request your   NZeTA , or apply for your visitor visa well in advance of travel to avoid delays, and only use the official NZeTA website to request your New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority.

Working holidays.

Working holiday visas (opens in new window) are available to young people, usually aged 18-30 (but 18-35 for a select few nationalities). They let you travel and work in New Zealand for up to 12 months, or 23 months if you’re from the UK. To apply you’ll need to meet the visa requirements, and have:

• A return ticket, or enough money to pay for one; and 
• Be coming mainly to holiday, with work being a secondary intention.

Arriving in Aotearoa New Zealand

Everyone entering New Zealand needs to complete a  New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD) (opens in new window)  including babies and children.

It’s free and you can complete it on the NZTD website or by downloading the NZTD app ahead of your travel.

You can start your NZTD at a time that suits you. If arriving by plane, the earliest you can submit your declaration is 24 hours before you start your trip to New Zealand. An NZTD needs to be submitted by the time you reach New Zealand passport control.

If arriving by boat (including cruise ships), the earliest you can submit your NZTD is 24 hours before departing the vessel’s last foreign port prior to arriving in New Zealand.

It needs to be submitted by the time the vessel has berthed at its first port in New Zealand. ​

If you apply for a visa or NZeTA, you still need to complete an NZTD (opens in new window) .

Here's how to complete your declaration online. 

The form is available in English and Te Reo Māori, as well as simplified and traditional Chinese Mandarin. 

From April 2024, the form will be in 12 more languages: Hindi, Samoan, Fijian, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Tagalog, Tamil, Tongan, and Portuguese.

Paper NZTD forms will be available for travellers who cannot complete it online.

What you can bring into New Zealand

After you’ve cleared passport control, you should collect your baggage and proceed through customs and biosecurity checks. In order to protect New Zealand and its environment, certain items are not allowed to be brought into the country, have restrictions for entry or must be declared if they are deemed to present a biosecurity risk. These include food, plants, animal products and outdoor recreational equipment.

Your baggage may be sniffed by a detector dog and/or x-rayed, and it may be searched to identify any risk goods you might be carrying.

Allowances and duty free concessions

As a visitor to New Zealand you may be entitled to various concessions and duty free entries on some of your goods. Nevertheless, the vast majority of visitors to New Zealand. i.e. people visiting to travel and explore, do not need to apply for a Visitor Visa (Tourist Visa) before arriving in the country. They do, however, need to pay for the NZeTA . Alternatively, there are certain nationalities that will need to apply for a Visitor Visa before arrival. Sounds complicated? What is a Visitor Visa For and How Long Can You Stay in New Zealand on a Tourist Visa?

“Visiting” New Zealand refers to someone temporarily staying in New Zealand without working in the country. The maximum time you can stay in New Zealand as a visitor depends on what country you are from. Read our quick guide below to find out what you need to visit New Zealand.

You Do Not Need to Get a Tourist Visa if…

If any of the following circumstances apply to you, you do not need to apply for a visitor visa (tourist visa) to New Zealand. Some of them are pretty darn obvious, but we will list them to cover all the bases.

• You are a New Zealand or Australian citizen
• You have a New Zealand resident visa
• You have a New Zealand permanent resident visa
• You have an Australian permanent residence visa
• You have an Australian resident return visa (excludes Australian temporary or provisional residence visa)
• You are from a visa-waiver country (see below).

There are also exceptions for people, for example, who are air flight crew, military, cruise ship passengers, etc. You can find more information about that on the Immigration New Zealand website .

Some countries have an agreement with New Zealand and their citizens are allowed to come to New Zealand for three months to travel without having to go through the process of getting a visa . As you can see, there are heaps of countries on the visa-waiver list. We have listed them by continent to make finding your country easier.

New Zealand Visitor Visa Requirements: Conditions for People from a Visa-Waiver Country

From a visa-waiver country? That’s great! This means you don’t have to apply for a visa before you come to New Zealand. However, there are a few things you should be aware of before arriving in the country.

You must make sure you:

• have paid the NZeTA and IVL (see section below)
• complete the “ Traveller Declaration ” during the flight to New Zealand or online 24 hours before travel
• have a passport that is valid three months beyond the date you intend to leave New Zealand
• have evidence for sufficient funds and onward travel (see the section below)
• stay in New Zealand for nine months or less in an 18-month period
• have no intention of studying or working in New Zealand (for that, you would need a working holiday visa or student visa , for example).

Please note that, as a citizen of a visa-waiver country, your visitor visa will be granted at the airport on arrival in New Zealand. It will usually be electronic, meaning that you may not get a visa stamp or label on your passport.

The NZeTA and IVL

Travellers from visa-waiver countries might not have to physically apply for a visitor visa for New Zealand but they do have to request and pay the NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) and IVL (International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy) before arrival.

How Long Does it Take to Get an NZeTA?

It is best to request them as soon as possible, as it can take up to 72 hours for an NZeTA approval.

How to Get an NZeTA

There are two ways of paying for the NZeTA and IVL:

• Through the Immigration New Zealand Android or Apple App
• Through the Immigration  New Zealand website form .

How Long is the NZeTA Valid?

The NZeTA and IVL are valid for multiple visits and transits to New Zealand for up to two years.

Evidence of Sufficient Funds and Onward Travel for Visitors and Tourists

Whether you have a New Zealand tourist visa (visitor visa) or an NZeTA, you will need to prepare some documents to present to the immigration officer on arrival in New Zealand. It’s true that these documents are not always asked for, but the time you risk it will no doubt be the time that you need the documents. You will need evidence of onward travel and evidence of sufficient maintenance funds while you are in the country.

What Type of Onward Travel Evidence is Accepted?

• Travel tickets (can be confirmed or open-dated) out of New Zealand.
• Written confirmation from an airline or travel agency that onward travel is booked and paid.
• Anything that demonstrates a confirmed departure from New Zealand , like a yacht or private aircraft departure.

How Much Funds Do You Need to Visit New Zealand?

In other words, how much money do you need in your bank account to go to New Zealand? You need to provide evidence to show you have either NZ$1,000 per month that you intend to stay in New Zealand or NZ$400 per month with evidence that you have paid for accommodation. What Types of Fund Evidence are Accepted?

• Bank drafts
• Bank statements in your name
• Letters of credit
• Photocopies of travellers’ cheques.

Not from a Visa-Waiver Country?

… then you will need to apply for a new zealand tourist visa (visitor visa) before arrival.

Sure, it’s a bit more hassle, but nothing that a bit of forward planning can’t handle.

How to Get a New Zealand Tourist Visa (Visitor Visa)

Those from countries not listed on the visa-waiver list must print and fill out the Visitor Visa Application (INZ 1017) form and send the paper application to your nearest Immigration New Zealand office. You can find the address on the Office and Fee Finder . Your visitor visa must be accepted before you enter New Zealand.

In order to complete the visitor visa application form, you need the following:

• The appropriate fee (see the Office and Fee Finder )
• Two passport-sized coloured photos
• Your passport or travel document
• If required, a medical and x-ray certificate (in most cases it is not required)
• Evidence of sufficient funds to support your stay (see the section above)
• Evidence of onward travel (see the section above).

Note that those who have to apply and pay for a visitor visa are not required to pay the NZeTA and IVL .

Here are the requirements I submitted for my New Zealand Visitor Visa application:

• No Objection Letter – This is a letter signed by my Manager showing approved leaves as well as the date I am expected to return to work.

Step-by-Step Guide on How to Apply for a New Zealand Visitor Visa

Before starting the application, determine which type of visitor visa you need. New Zealand offers several types of visitor visas depending on the purpose and duration of your stay. Some of the most common visitor visas are the General Visitor Visa (tourist or family visit), Business Visitor Visa, Group Visitor Visa, and the Academic Visitor Visa. You can find more information on the types of visitor visas available on the New Zealand Immigration website .

In my case, I applied for a General Visitor Visa because the purpose of my visit is for tourism only. This visa allows you to come to New Zealand as a visitor for a holiday or vacation. You can also study for up to three months or attend a job interview.

To apply for a New Zealand Visitor Visa, you will need to create a RealMe account . This is a secure online service that allows you to access and use multiple government services, including visa applications.

Once you have a RealMe account, you can start your online application for a New Zealand visitor visa. Make sure to fill out the application accurately and completely. If you need assistance with the application, you can contact the New Zealand Immigration Contact Centre.

After completing the online application, you will need to choose a Visa Application Centre (VAC) where you will submit your passport. When I finished my application online, I received a confirmation email the next day. I printed this, as it was required to be submitted along with my passport to VFS.

The application fee varies depending on the type of visa you are applying for. To apply for a New Zealand Visitor Visa, you must pay the application fee of NZD $246 at the time of submission. Moreover, every individual visiting New Zealand must pay an International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) of NZD $35, which is included in the total cost.

Good news!!! If you are traveling to New Zealand for less than 60 days, then you are exempt from paying the application fee. When I applied, I only paid around 1,000 pesos for the IVL and the VFS Global service fee .

Immigration New Zealand may require some applicants to provide their passport to VFS Global for authentication. If you need to provide your passport, the website’s RealMe account link would have advised you of this when you submitted your online visa application. Since the New Zealand Embassy issues e-visas, the passport will be returned to you at the same time it was scanned.

After submitting your application, you can track its progress online. You will receive an email notification when a decision has been made on your application.

New Zealand Visitor Visa FAQs

There is no specific amount required for a New Zealand visitor visa. However, you will need to show proof of sufficient funds to cover your travel expenses and support yourself during your stay in New Zealand. The amount required may vary depending on the length of your stay and your travel plans.

In my experience, the New Zealand visitor visa was easy to get. Generally, the ease of obtaining a visa will depend on several factors, such as your nationality, purpose of visit, and whether you meet the eligibility criteria. Your visa approval chances are good if you provide all the required documentation and meet the eligibility requirements.

Immigration New Zealand processes the visitor visa application within a timeframe that depends on various factors, such as visa type, application volume, and country of origin. To ensure enough processing time, it is advisable to submit your application well in advance of your travel date (~2 months).

As of April 2023, The average processing time for a New Zealand Visitor Visa application is 11 business days . In my experience, two months before the pandemic, the processing took 2 months. During that time, I was unaware that COVID-19 was spreading rapidly in China, where New Zealand visas are processed.

The fee for a New Zealand visitor visa in the Philippines depends on the type of visa you are applying for, the length of your stay, and the processing time. As of April 2023, the fee for a standard visitor visa ranges from PHP 6,200 to PHP 9,100.

During the New Zealand visitor visa application process, applicants may be required to attend an interview in certain cases. However, it is not always mandatory, as most applications are evaluated based on the submitted documents.

All Philippine passport holders must apply for a visitor visa prior to traveling to New Zealand and must pay the visa fee at the time of application.

Hello po. Tourist po kayo? Ang alam ko po kasi wala naman nagbago sa requirements. As per DOJ, “regular tourists are not required additional documentation apart from their passports, visas if needed in the country of destination, round trip tickets, boarding passes.”

Hi. Re submission of passport to VFS, will you be able to get your passport same day? Or leave it to VFS until e-VISA is approved (may take 20 days or longer)? Can I apply early even if my intended travel is still 9 months ahead? Thank you.

Hello Wends. In my experience, I did get my passport as soon as I was done with the biometric in VFS. Re. How far in advance can you apply? According to VFS, the embassy doesn’t set a requirement for the number of days in advance for visa applications. For me, I submitted the application 3 months prior my intended travel date.

No. According to the NZ Immigration website, If you will stay in New Zealand for less than 6 months, you normally do not need to get a chest x-ray unless you are applying for a Recognised Seasonal Employer limited visa, or they ask you to.

Hi there, does NZ issue visitor eVisas to Filipinos? I’m a little confused with the process cause others are saying you will just get an eVisa via email (similar to Australia) while others still need to go to VFS.

Hey Chris. NZ issues eVisas to Filipinos, same as AU. When I applied in 2020, I was asked to submit my passport to VFS Global for scanning. I got my passport as soon as they scanned it. I have a friend who recently applied (April 2023) and he wasn’t advised to submit passport to VFS. I think NZ has simplified the process since they opened their borders 🙂
