Athens Taxi: All You Need To Know
Athens Taxis are safe and operate 24 hours. They’re also quite affordable and you can easily find a taxi on the streets or at taxi stands. Many taxi ranks are available especially in tourist areas like Monastiraki and Syntagma. It’s also possible to call a taxi from the radio taxi line.
All taxis in Athens are yellow regardless of their brand and type.
There are over 13,000 taxis in Athens, so it’s easy to flag down one.
Different taxi companies are available, however, they all have set pricing and are fully regulated.
General Rates of a Taxi Ride in Athens
All taxis in Athens use a taximeter. So, your fare is calculated according to the distance you want to go.
Also, there are two different tariffs. Tariff 1 is for between 5 a.m. and 12 a.m. Tariff 2 is for the duration between 12 a.m. and 5 a.m.
Extra charges also exist for each piece of suitcase you have over 10 kg. They also apply for airport pickups or pickups at the train and bus station, or port. Special holidays and one-hour waiting time also come with extra fees.
You can find these mentioned fees and other related fees listed below:
- Base fare: €1,29
- Rate per kilometer in the daytime and central Athens: €0,74
- Rate per kilometer in nighttime and in the surroundings: €1,29
- Surcharge for telephone reservations: €1,92
- One-hour waiting time: €11,81
Airport Rate for Taxis in Athens
There is a fixed rate for travel between Athens International Airport and the city center: €38. If it’s between midnight and 5 a.m., then the rate is €54. Also, the fixed rates include VAT, tolls fee, turnpikes, meter start, taxes, airport charge, and so on. This applies both ways. If your destination is other than the city center or Piraeus Port, the charge will change accordingly.
You can find taxis between Exit 2 and Exit 3 at the arrival area while leaving the airport. You may need to wait in a queue as well. You can also book your taxi beforehand if you don’t want to wait in line.
Some Tips When Using a Taxi in Athens
- It’s better to know the name of the main streets and avenues just in case of overcharge.
- If you think you’re overcharged, you can ask for a receipt from the driver. The receipt needs to include the taxi number and the information about the taxi operator. You can then go to the tourist police.
- It’s advisable to check the taximeter. For daytime, they must have Tariff 1 on.
- On the days of demonstrations, some of the main roads are closed off. At these times, taking into an additional duration in your travel is advisable.
- You can call a local radio taxi company in bad weather or if it’s late at night. You can also call a taxi from the Athens taxi app in Greece. In this way, you don’t need to wait and try to find a taxi outside. Note that there may be additional costs for this service as well.
- Keeping changes and small bills are advisable in case your taxi driver doesn’t have change for large banknotes.

Athens taxis. can they be trusted.
- Updated: April 28, 2020
Let me give you the short answer first. Yes and No
Now to the long answer:
- Yes, if you use an App or grab it directly at the airport cue;
- With caution, if you raise your hand randomly in the street or get it at the port of Piraeus and tourist attractions;
Just to be clear, it’s not that you are in physical danger; yet you risk overpaying, wasting time, and wrecking your nerves.
So, let’s examine your alternatives.
Use a taxi-hailing app in Athens
Your best option, hands down, is to request a taxi in Athens through BEAT, everybody’s favorite taxi-hailing app.
Use the BEAT app
Formerly known as Taxibeat, this cab service aims to provide a smooth passenger experience at no-extra-cost.
The associated taxis are clean, the drivers are polite, and the cars are newer , with infrequent exceptions that is.
To give you the picture, I never grab just any taxi from the street.
I do not grab a taxi from the street, ever!!
Only on rare occasions when the app cannot find any available taxis do I raise my hand.
BEAT is the preferred way to ride taxis for many Greeks and me.
For your convenience, I have listed the download links to the Android and Apple stores
Use the Uber app
Alternatively, you can use the Uber app , which is likewise a good option, especially if you already have the app installed on your phone.
I have the feeling that the Beat app has a larger fleet, but I believe the best practice is to have both apps installed.
To save a lot of hassle, download both apps before your trip to Greece and use those only!
An added advantage of using the apps is that you can pay through them.
Save your payment details in the apps, and you never need to find change for taxis again.
What if the Athens taxi apps don't work?
Now, let us examine that case when you are stranded somewhere the apps are not sending you any taxis, what do you do?
Well, in this case, go on and raise your hand; you just need to be cautious.
Read further down on how to do it without problems by following some simple steps .
Hey, it’s not that we are in a third world country; nothing like that.
And the actual risk is merely financial, and I do not even mean robbery.
What can happen is that the taxidriver overcharges.
He can do that by using a variety of tricks as taking a longer route, having a rigged taxi meter, or requesting a fixed fee.
These tricks will result in losing your time, your money, and probably messing up with your nerves.
However, if you find yourself in a situation where you have to raise your hand in the street, then follow the simple rules I have listed below:
Here are the steps to follow when hailing a cab in Athens
To start, ideally, raise your hand on a nice looking taxi , damage-free and clean.
Next, you should always check if there is another passenger already sitting as this is an old tactic that still holds. If yes, do not hail that taxi.
Once you have performed your vehicle check , look at the driver’s face . Usually, the crooks look like crooks. Listen to your gut feeling here.
Now you can raise your hand but don’t jump in just yet.
S mell the vehicle . Is the driver smoking? If the car is smelly, then you should not get in.
Now, lastly, and before you get in , ask the driver to set the meter. He will probably do it by himself but be alert and make sure he does.
You know what they say: “the opportunity makes the thieve.” Be alert; show that you know. The more knowledgeable you appear, the less the chances a taxi-driver will think of taking advantage of you.
Undoubtedly, if at any instance you sense something dodgy from his part, close the door and leave. He will not go after you, no need to worry.
If all feels right, then say “kalimera” (good day), sit at the back, and buckle-up.
You are off for a nice ride.
Before I end this, I have compiled a useful checklist for you (I call it the Rules of Engagement ) for when grabbing a taxi from the street.
Rules Of Engagement - Hailing a cab from the road
- When possible, ask someone for an estimate on how much the fare should be. Ask the concierge, your host, or anyone who might know;
- Make sure the driver turns on the meter ;
- Do not get into smelly, dirty, or visually damaged cabs. Close the door and leave;
- If you sense anything dodgy, do not get in;
- Grabbing a cab from a hotel does not invalidate the above*;
* My father in law once got into a taxi at the Hotel Grande Bretagne, which the concierge hailed for him. He was charged 50 euros for a ride that should be less than 10.

Which is the Best Athens Taxi App?
Published by the greek taxi on august 16, 2023 august 16, 2023, athens taxi apps in greece.
Taxi is a very popular way to go around the city of Athens . Indeed, they are more expensive than the public means of transportation, but they’re definitely cheaper compared to other big capitals in Europe and North America.
Therefore, local people often use taxis in Athens especially for short distances and after midnight when most buses and subway stop operating.
All licensed taxis in Athens are painted yellow with a blue stripe and are equipped with taximetres. The fare is calculated per kilometre and per hour.
Apart from the transfers to and from the airport that have a fixed price, the cost for any taxi ride is calculated with a taximeter. The starting price is 1,80€ and the minimum price you have to pay for a ride is 4,00€ no matter the distance.
Payment is mostly made in cash ; some taxis do have a POS available and accept credit/ debit cards though. Remember that the passenger is entitled to a receipt ! This receipt must be issued to the passenger from the taximeter’s printer before getting off.
By 2023, there is a considerable amount of Athens Taxi apps that aim to provide professional and comfortable transfers around the city as well as to and from the Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos .
FREE NOW (formerly BEAT ) is the most popular taxi app in Athens at the moment. All you have to do is download the app, enter your location and the desired destination and a taxi will be at your door in no time.You can pay either in cash or with a credit card and until recently you could even choose the driver you prefer based on their reviews, car type, and proximity to your location. Even though, this service is no longer available you can still see the driver’s reviews before booking your ride. With the FREE NOW App, you can also cancel your ride in case something comes up as well as contact the driver by phone after you’ve booked a ride.
Welcome Pickups offers Athens Airport Transfers and Taxis services . Featuring different types of cars for small and larger groups as well as trained English-speaking drivers, Welcome Pickups is a great way for reaching your destination after arriving in Athens.
Uber launched in Athens in 2014, 4 years after the company’s foundation, operating UberX, a service that uses professional licensed drivers, and UberTAXI, a service using taxi drivers. Over the first few years of its operation, Uber attracted 450,000 passengers in Athens. However, in 2018, after new local regulations related to ride-sharing, Uber decided to suspend its UberX service in the Greek capital. UberTAXI still operates though, offering passengers the choice to book a taxi via the Uber App. Uber taxis are the same yellow taxis you’ll see all over Athens and the ride price is slightly higher than the one you’d pay with a regular taxi.
Another well-known Greek Taxi app in Athens is Taxiplon . With 1.140 cars operating in Attica and the countryside, Taxiplon serves about 10.000 passengers daily. You can book your taxi ride by telephone or apparently via the Taxiplon App.Operating in Greece since 2012, Taxiplon has been certified with ISO 9001:2015 and has earned a place at the Diamonds of the Greek Economy in 2014.
Taxi.gr is the newest addition in the Athens Taxi Apps wide range. Slick, fast, efficient, and really easy to use. It’s a brand new ride-hailing app created by a Greek company with vast experience on taxis ownership and licences renting.
Radio taxis are another option if you don’t feel like hailing a cab, or if you want to ask for a specific pick-up time and date. Call them for a taxi or pre-book online.

I grew up in Athens. Here are 8 things I wish tourists would stop doing when they come here.
- I was born and raised in Athens , and I believe many mistakes tourists make here are avoidable.
- Travelers should embrace the city's quirks while respecting public spaces and unwritten laws.
- Ask the locals where to eat, but don't flush your toilet paper, and never fully rely on the buses.
I was born and raised in Athens, so I've seen a lot of tourists.
After all, Athens had a record-breaking year for tourism in 2023 — and it's one of the most-searched summer destinations this year , according to Delta.
But while visiting our famous archeological sites and enjoying the delicious Greek food , tourists often make mistakes that could easily be avoided.
Here are things I wish people would stop doing when they visit Athens.
Stop falsely assuming Athens has year-round hot weather
Tourists often arrive here in tank tops and shorts no matter what time of year it is. But you should really check the weather before packing your bathing suit.
Although the weather in Athens is mild, temperatures vary from 16 degrees Celsius, or 61 degrees Fahrenheit, to 28 in spring and summer, with only a few days in July and August reaching the dreaded 30 to 35 degrees.
You can also expect colder fall temperatures (14 to 18 degrees), and particularly chilly winters (-5 to 10 degrees). Athens has seen its fair share of snow over the years, too.
Don't ignore dress codes
Athens is a pretty casual city — you can pretty much wear whatever casual outfit you'd like on strolls or in most museums and restaurants.
But stop entering churches in crop tops and tiny skirts — it's often deemed disrespectful. Long pants or dresses are much more appropriate.
Moreover, you're not even allowed to wear high heels at ancient sites, which is a rule created in part to protect their marble. And I suggest bringing flat shoes or sneakers with a good grip when visiting the Acropolis to avoid brutal falls.
While making your plans, remember taking a bus is rarely the best option
Buses in Athens are notoriously late and unreliable . Most people drive cars or use the metro instead.
Even if you've got a new, super-cool app that shows when the next bus will arrive at your stop, rest assured that Athenian buses defy all laws of GPS-based technology, and you will be disappointed — and late for your dinner reservations.
If you insist on riding the bus, ask someone at the stop when your specific bus passed last. If it was less than 20 minutes ago, I wouldn't bother waiting for the next one.

Don't just stick with gyros and Greek salad
The country's cuisine does not end with the classic Greek salad or with gyros. Definitely be open to trying more food and wandering off the beaten path.
When in Athens, swap crowded areas like Monastiraki for less touristy ones such as Exarcheia, Petralona, and Koukaki, where you'll find some of the best food in town.
I encourage you to try zucchini fritters, stuffed tomatoes, rooster with pasta in red sauce, pastitsio (Greek lasagna), moussaka (this casserole's famous for a reason), and plenty more flavorful nibbles and dishes.
When in doubt, ask a local for the best restaurants in Athens rather than blindly following travel guides.
You shouldn't flush toilet paper down the toilet
Clogged toilets are a nightmare, which is why you should avoid flushing toilet paper down them while in restaurants, hotels, museums — or just about anywhere in Athens.
The city's sewage system is quite old with narrow pipes, meaning they can't handle much. Use the bin to the side of the toilet to dispose of your used tissue instead.
There's no point in complaining about cicadas
Greek summers go hand in hand with two often-annoying insects: mosquitoes and cicadas.
You can use mosquito repellents to deal with the former, but not much can be done when cicadas are singing their lungs out at night.
Accept that their song will be the soundtrack to your Athens vacation and try to mentally block it out at night. Or, even better, let it lull you to sleep.
Never cross the street without looking
This may sound like a primary-school-level rule, but you'll need it if you want to make it back home in one piece: Never cross the street without checking for cars first.
Crosswalks are rarely seen by Greek drivers as a sign to stop, so crossing one whenever you want is unwise. Wait for the light for pedestrians to turn green and double-check for any drivers on the loose before crossing.
To be fair, cars in Greece are obligated to stop at a crosswalk, no matter the traffic light — but safety trumps proving your point.
Leaving your table without tipping is bad manners
When paying for a meal here, you may notice your bill does not include the mention of a tip.
Although tipping culture here is far from what it is in the US, where many feel tipping 20% is mandatory, it's considered especially rude not to tip servers if you're a tourist here.
In restaurants and cafés in Athens, it's good practice to leave at least a 10% tip.
