British Airways Pet Policies

British Airways pet policy  allows for in-cabin and cargo animal transport. Many of the pet-related restrictions vary depending on flight, route, and country of destination or origin—as is often the case with large, international airlines. Nevertheless, British Airways sets broader standards and regulations for all flights.

The airline’s general pet policies are relatively strict and unforgiving. Only service animals are allowed to fly in-cabin, and emotional support animals are not considered to be service animals. Though British Airways has several rules that may seem foreign to American travelers, we are confident that—with the right preparation—your trip will run smoothly and efficiently.

Here’s what you need to know about British Airways pet policies, regardless of your chosen travel plan.

…HAVE EVERYTHING?

  • Flying with Pets in the Cabin :  Only trained assistance dogs may ride with passengers in the cabin. To make sure you can successfully fly with your animal, read about the British Airways policies for pets in the cabin.
  • Flying pets in cargo :  Animals traveling as cargo must be certified by a veterinarian as safe to fly. Temperatures must stay within a safe range for that animal. To ensure you can successfully fly with your pet, read about IAG Cargo and the British Airways policies regarding cargo travel.
  • Service Animal Policies :  Only assistance dogs are service animals on British Airways flights. They may fly in the cabin and for free. Learn more about specific British Airways service animal policies before making final travel plans.

Other British Airways Pet Policies and Programs

If you and your pet are heading to the United Kingdom, you must acquaint yourself with the Pet Travel Scheme. These requirements are set by the UK Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), and it allows cats and dogs to travel between some countries and UK airports avoiding quarantine. Though seemingly complex, the requirements are fairly standard—the DEFRA requires the animals to be microchipped, have a pet passport or veterinary certificate, and a rabies vaccination. For more information, see the  DEFRA Pet Travel Scheme website .

Additionally, British Airways franchise partners may offer different pet-related policies. SUN-AIR, for example, allows all animals under 13.2 pounds to travel with passengers in the cabin. Additionally, cats and dogs under 13.2lbs on  OpenSkies flights  from New York to Paris (or from Paris to New York) may fly in the cabin. For more information about these franchise partners, see the British Airways pet travel  website .

If you are flying via British Airways to or from the United States, we recommend using our  Airport Travel Guide  to find maps of pet relief areas and cargo facility locations for every U.S. airport you and your pet will be traveling through.

Travelling with an assistance dog

We're able to carry an assistance dog free of charge in the cabin of all our flights. Here's more information about how to plan and book your flight with your assistance dog.

What is an assistance dog?

An assistance dog is one that has been trained to assist a person with a disability or medical condition and has been determined as being able to travel safely in the aircraft cabin. For your assistance dog to travel with you in the cabin on British Airways your assistance dog must:

  • Be trained to assist with a disability or medical condition by way of specific tasks and assessed as suitable for those purposes by an accredited member of Assistance Dogs International (ADI) or the International Guide Dog Federation (IGDF) to comply with the requirements of the UK Government, specifically the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA).  For direct flights to and from the United States of America, completed US Department of Transport Service Animal forms are required.
  • Be individually trained in specific tasks to assist you with your disability or medical condition
  • Have had behavioural training and show appropriate behaviour in public and onboard an aircraft
  • Wear an identifying jacket/harness
  • Remain under your control at all times

Be aware that we will ask you to send documents confirming the assistance dog training your dog has completed.

If your dog does not meet these criteria, or is an emotional support dog, it will need to travel as a domestic pet .

Booking travel for your assistance dog

It’s currently not possible to book this service online as we need additional information to enable us to confirm your assistance dog for travel. You will need to book your assistance dog at the same time you book your flight and at least 48 hours prior to your date of travel.

If you’ve already booked your flight and you wish to travel with your assistance dog, you will need to contact us to add your assistance dog at least 48 hours prior to your travel date.

Travelling to the UK

Due to entry regulations into the UK, you must have contacted and received approval from the UK animal reception centre at least 72 hours before your flight. You will be asked to show your approval letter before boarding your flight to the UK, Failure to comply with this requirement will mean we are unable to accept you for travel to the UK.

Details of the UK Animal Reception Centres can be found below under preparing for your trip .

Travelling to or from the US

If you are travelling to or from the United States of America you must complete a U.S. DoT Service Animal Air Travel Form detailing your dog’s health, training, and behaviour.

In addition, for flights over eight hours in duration, you must complete a U.S. DoT Relief Attestation Form confirming your dog will not need to relieve itself during the flight or detail how the dog will relieve itself in a sanitary way.

Copies of both documents must be emailed to our accessibility team at least 48 hours before your flight. We will review these documents and contact you to let you know if we will accept your dog for travel.

Our accessibility team may also ask to see documents that confirm your dog has had appropriate training to behave in a public setting, as well as the training they have had to work or perform tasks that assist you with your disability.

If we do not receive the completed US DOT forms in time or your dog has not had the appropriate training, we will not permit your dog to travel in the cabin onboard our aircraft.

British Airways Pet Policy

British Airways has specific guidelines in place for passengers who wish to travel with their pets. It is important to note that British Airways does not allow animals to travel in the cabin as pets in passenger cabin are not permitted. Additionally, pets are not allowed to travel as checked baggage.

However, British Airways does allow animals to travel as cargo in the hold. To ensure the safety and comfort of your pet during the journey, British Airways works with PetAir UK, a company owned by qualified veterinarians, to transport pets from UK airports. If you are traveling to the UK, your pet can travel with British Airways' sister company, IAG Cargo.

When transporting pets through IAG Cargo, it is necessary to adhere to certain guidelines. The carriers used must be strong, secure, and have proper ventilation. It is important to ensure that your pet's nose and paws cannot fit through any ventilation opening or door mesh. The carrier must also have water and food bowls secured to the inside. Additionally, pets must be able to stand and sit erect without touching the top of the kennel. Fiberboard, wire mesh, and wicker containers are not suitable for air transportation.

For all other countries and pets, the dimensions should be 21" x 16" x 15" (53 cm x 40 cm x 38 cm), as long as the animal fits comfortably inside.

It is important to keep in mind that air carriers can change these policies at any time, so you should always check directly with British Airways before you book for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

  • Cats and dogs weighing no more than 6 kg are allowed to travel in the cabin on BA flights. The weight includes the weight of their carrier as well.
  • The pet carrier must be able to fit comfortably under the seat in front of you. It must meet the airline’s size and weight restrictions.
  • The maximum dimensions for the carrier are 45cm x 30cm x 25cm.
  • Only one pet is allowed per passenger, and there is a limit of two pets per cabin on each flight.
  • It’s important to note that some destinations may have specific regulations and restrictions on pet travel.

British Airways Pets In Cargo

If your pet is too large to travel in the cabin or if you’re traveling to a destination that doesn’t allow pets in the cabin, then you can opt to have your pet travel as cargo. Here are the guidelines to follow:

  • A dedicated team takes care of the transportation of pets as cargo. They ensure that pets in cargo are safe and comfortable throughout the journey.
  • The airline accepts cats, dogs, and other small pets as cargo. But they must meet the requirements for size and weight.
  • The maximum weight limit for pets traveling as cargo is 75 kg.

What Is The Pet Travel Scheme Offered By The UK?

The Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) is a program that allows pets to travel between the UK and certain other countries. They don’t need to be quarantined.

  • Under the scheme, pets must be microchipped and vaccinated against rabies.
  • They must also have a pet passport or an official third-country veterinary certificate.
  • Pets must travel on an approved transport company and enter the UK through an approved entry point.
  • Dogs, cats, and ferrets can enter the UK under the scheme. Other pets, such as birds and reptiles, may be subject to different rules.
  • The scheme is designed to make it easier for pet owners to travel with their pets. But also maintaining high standards of animal welfare and protecting public health.

Extra Rules To Be Followed (Just In case)

In the event that either applies, you must abide by additional regulations (referred to as Balai regulations). The Balai regulation is a set of rules designed to ensure the safety and welfare of animals during transportation:

  • If you intend to sell, give away or transfer ownership of your pet.
  • Over five days will pass either prior to or following the arrival of your pet.
  • While not participating in or preparing for a competition, show, or sporting event, you have more than five animals with you.

Things To Check Before Your British Airways Pet Travel

Before you travel with your pet, it’s important to check on these key points to make sure you don’t face any hassle:

  • Check with the transport company you will be using whether they accept pets for travel.
  • Confirm if there are any restrictions on the number of pets that can travel at the same time. This is especially important if you have more than one pet that you plan to travel with.
  • Some transport companies may require proof that your pet is fit and healthy to travel.
  • Proof will include a letter from your vet, recent health check records or certain information in your pet’s passport.
  • If you are not selling or transferring your pet dog, ferret or cat to someone new in the United Kingdom, you must fill a declaration form to ensure the confirmation.

Banned Breed Of Dogs

British Airways has a policy of not accepting certain breeds of dogs on its flights due to safety concerns. The following breeds are typically not allowed to travel in the cargo hold of a British Airways flight:

  • American Pit Bull Terrier
  • Dogo Argentino
  • Fila Brasileiro
  • Japanese Tosa

These breeds are often associated with aggressive behavior and have been responsible for several attacks on humans and other animals.

Things To Keep In Mind

It is important to note that owning a banned breed of dog is illegal in the UK. Individuals who are found to be in possession of such a dog may face legal consequences.

  • If you are found to be in possession of a banned breed of dog, the police or local council dog warden may take it away. They will keep it, even if it is not acting dangerously and there has not been a complaint.
  • If your dog is seized by the police/local council, a police/dog expert will judge what type of dog you have. They will also check if the dog is a danger to the public or not.
  • Your dog will then either be released or kept in kennels while the police or council apply to a court.
  • As the owner of a banned breed of dog, you may face criminal charges. You might also be required to pay a fine, and your dog may be destroyed.
  • Owning a banned breed of dog may impact your ability to obtain home insurance or travel with your dog.
  • Seek advice from a qualified professional if you are unsure whether your dog is a banned breed.
  • It is also important to ensure that your dog is properly trained and socialized.
  • Take appropriate measures to prevent incidents of aggression or harm.

  • Check the eligibility of your pet: The pet policy allows dogs, cats, and household birds to travel in the cabin or hold, depending on the size and weight of your pet.
  • Book your flight: You will need to contact them directly to book your flight and inform them that you will be traveling with a pet. Be sure to book well in advance as there are limited spaces available for pets on flights.
  • Get a pet passport: If you are traveling from outside of the UK, you will need to obtain a pet passport for your pet. This is a document that shows your pet has been vaccinated against certain diseases and is in good health.
  • Choose a travel container: Your pet will need to travel in an airline-approved travel container that is suitable for their size and weight. There are specific guidelines for the size and type of container allowed, so be sure to check their website.
  • Prepare your pet for travel: Before traveling, you should acclimate your pet to the travel container and take them on short trips to get them used to traveling. You should also make sure your pet is up to date on all vaccinations and has a health certificate from a veterinarian.
  • Check in for your flight: When you arrive at the airport, you will need to check in with your pet and provide all necessary documentation. You may also need to pay a fee for your pet to travel.
  • Board your flight : Once on board, your pet will need to stay in their travel container for the duration of the flight. You will not be able to take your pet out of the container during the flight.
  • Online Check-In: Feel free to visit a check-in desk at the airport as individuals will not be able to “check in online,” and a representative will arrange for support to the boarding gate.
  • Animal Reception Center: Passengers who are taking dogs into the United Kingdom must make an arrangement with the Animal Reception Center. It will be done at the initial entry point at a minimum 72 hours before the flight’s boarding time. Center will determine whether the dog complies with the Pet Travel Scheme’s criteria or not. Then you will be provided a note of pre-approval that you must have to visit the UK.
  • Confirmation: The dog’s collar will be marked with a label that reads “Pet Travel Scheme Entry Check Passed”. It will be done by the animal reception centre employee. It will show the confirmation that the dog has been granted permission to enter the nation. A British Airways staff will be able to take your dog to a relief area once the clearance checks are over. They will then be able to follow you through Customs and Immigration.

Following these steps will help ensure a smooth and safe travel experience for you and your pet on British Airways.

They welcome and treat pets just like their other passengers and have partnered with Pet Air UK and have a sister company by the name IAG Cargo to take care of your pet’s journey. It is of prime importance to be aware of the airlines’ specific pet policies to understand the requirements and prepare for a safe and comfortable journey for your pet(s).

Currently, only assistance dogs can travel in the cabin.

  • Which Airlines Carry Pets?

PetAir are British Airways' preferred supplier for pet travel in UK.

IAG Cargo is a sister company of British Airways within the IAG group and BA are one of the most frequently used airlines to carry pets out of UK. BA has the most departures from Heathrow, many departures from Gatwick and their facilities are excellent. At Heathrow, there is a dedicated check-in area for pets so that the pets can be accepted, security screened and then have their own haven away from the noise and bustle of the busy cargo warehouse. Here is all you need to know about British Airways pet travel and their policies.

British Airways will only accept a booking from an agent up to 6 weeks before the flight – they then confirm the space has been requested and “penciled in”. Around 2 weeks before the flight, once the planes have been scheduled on that particular route, the British Airways specialist sales team will confirm the flight to us. Obviously, there is an issue relating to the fact that humans can book their own flight many months in advance, however most people want to be on the same flight as their pet – the ideal scenario is to get the pet booked and confirmed first and then the person gets on the same flight.

Often, someone will book a flight and ask for their pets to travel on the same flight, but that flight is not available for whatever reason (leaves too early to be cleared, lands too late to be cleared at the destination, the aircraft is not suitable for pets, leaves or lands on a weekend etc.) However, we understand that people generally like to book their flights early in order to secure the best prices, so we ask that you talk to us before booking your flight so that we can advise you on how to increase the likelihood of you and your pet being on the same flight.

British Airways operate an odd, but sensible, pet policy called “OK to forward”. Essentially, British Airways want to speak to the consignee (the person receiving the pets) to ensure that they will be at the airport to collect the pets. This is a superb time for the client to chat to the local handling team about the requirements, such as the fee for customs clearance, how close any customs office is and how long after the flight lands does the collection process begin. You can also find out about an address for collection.

All pets travelling need an “OK to forward” completed, and once the destination airport team has spoken to the consignee, they will then put a note on the file which alerts the team in London that the contact has been made and the pet can fly. Unless this contact is made, British Airways will not allow the pet to leave the UK. PetAir UK can arrange and plan all aspects, but often, the collection at destination is done by the owners, their representatives, or an agent. It’s recommended, however, that you double check your pet isn’t going to be left at the airport, especially after they’ve been on a flight for a long time.

Please do contact us for more information on British Airways pet travel. PetAir understand that organising a flight for your pet can be stressful and so we’re here to help every step of the way.

There are many routes from the UK that are only served directly by BA, such as Bermuda from Gatwick or Nassau from Heathrow, so this can make the choice of airline easy.

The Gatwick animal reception centre is a brilliant facility where pets are only ever handled by ‘animal people’ and luckily BA use this for all pet shipments. At Heathrow, the pets are delivered directly to the BA Cargo facility where they are held in their own animal room in the cargo warehouse before being taken directly to the aircraft by British Airways staff.

British airways will not carry Bulldogs of any type, Pugs or Pekingese, but do carry most other breeds. Bullmastiffs, Boxers, Boston Terriers, Shih Tzus and other breeds with flatter faces must travel in a kennel 10% larger than would be normal for their size to increase ventilation. They will carry cats like Persians, Himalayans and Exotics using these bigger crate rulings. Fetchapet travel crates are generous anyway, so these restrictions don’t really affect us.

BA will only tranship onto an onwards flight in certain Caribbean destinations, so we only normally use them for direct flights.

British Airways Pet Policy

Published on: March 25, 2022  |  Author: Starwood Pet Travel

british-airways-plane

British Airways boasts of their exceptional care for animals of all kinds, a commitment they have upheld for over fifty years. They have successfully transported various creatures, including highly endangered species, across the globe.

However, if you are planning to travel internationally with your beloved pet, there is a high chance that your furry friend will have to journey in the cargo hold if you choose to fly with British Airways. Unfortunately, British Airways does not permit pets to travel alongside you in the cabin, except for one remarkable exception. If you have a recognized service dog that has been specially trained to aid individuals with disabilities or medical conditions and has been deemed fit for in-cabin travel, they are more than welcome to accompany you at no additional cost.

It is important to note that this in-cabin exception does not extend to Emotional Support Animals.

If your pet's travel itinerary involves other airlines, it is essential to check with them regarding their specific pet policies, as each airline has its own regulations and guidelines.

Cargo travel

British Airways is devoted to providing pets with the same level of care and attention as their human passengers. Their team of animal handlers are not only highly skilled but also deeply passionate about animals. The conditions in the cargo terminal and hold where animals travel are closely monitored to ensure their safety and well-being.

When it comes to traveling with your pet, it is always advisable to make reservations as early as possible, especially if you're flying to London. For those with large dogs, it's important to inquire about any weight or size restrictions that may apply to your specific flight, as these can vary depending on the aircraft. Additionally, it's worth asking about breed restrictions, as British Airways does have embargoes on certain breeds of cats and dogs.

To ensure a comfortable journey for your pet in the cargo area, it is necessary to have a kennel that adheres to the guidelines set by the International Air Transport Association .

Traveling with a cat or dog also requires appropriate travel and health documentation. These requirements vary from country to country, so it's essential to familiarize yourself with the specific requirements for your destination. Starting this process early is highly recommended, as it can be time-consuming and complex.

By taking these necessary steps and planning ahead, you can help alleviate the stress of pet travel and ensure a smooth journey for your furry companion.

Learn About the Pet Import Requirements

If you and your furry friend are embarking on a journey to the United Kingdom or any European Union country, it's crucial to familiarize yourself with the specific requirements for these destinations. The regulations vary depending on the country you're departing from, and certain countries may have additional requirements to consider.

In general, all cats and dogs traveling to EU countries and the UK must be microchipped, have a rabies vaccination that is at least 21 days old, and possess a health certificate issued within 10 days prior to travel (if non-commercial). Some countries, including the UK, Ireland, Finland, and Malta, also require dogs to receive a tapeworm treatment between 1-5 days before their arrival. Failure to comply with these pet import regulations may result in a quarantine stay for your pet, accompanied by additional fees.

To make your pet's travel experience stress-free, we highly recommend enlisting the services of a professional pet shipper like Starwood. They have the expertise and knowledge to ensure a smooth and seamless journey for your beloved companion.

Flying with pets? Here's what to know.

By Anne Marie Lee

Edited By Alain Sherter

Updated on: April 6, 2024 / 10:08 AM EDT / CBS News

Thinking of taking your dog or cat with you the next time you fly? For a growing percentage of the 90.5 million pet owners in the U.S., the answer is yes. But while the notion of boarding a plane with your pet may seem simple, the rules and restrictions around traveling with an animal can be confusing.

Eight major U.S. airlines allow pets to fly in-cabin as carry-ons. But flying with your pet takes research and planning, as pet policies vary from airline to airline, are steeped in restrictions, and are limited to specific countries and cities. You'll also have to pay an extra fee for your pet ranging from $95 to $200, depending on the airline and where you're flying. And restrictions often change.

For example, American Airlines  recently revised its policies  so passengers flying with pets may also bring one full-size carry-on or personal item. But the carrier prohibits carry-on pets on transatlantic and transpacific flights. Here's what you need to know when considering taking your fur baby with you on a plane.

Cargo, check-in or carry-on?

Most airlines offer three options for transporting animals: cargo, check-in or carry-on. But if your pet is larger than a bread box, your options are limited to the cargo or baggage check-in options, with very few exceptions.

Given that large canine breeds such as Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers are among the most popular dogs in the country, the size restriction for in-cabin pet travel can be a major frustration for those who would rather not fly at all if that means putting their pet in cargo.

A 2023 Forbes Adviser survey of 10,000 U.S. dog owners found that 33% of respondents fly with their pets, while 37% listed not being able to bring their dog on a plane as their biggest annoyance. (You can learn more about the differences between cargo, check-in and carry-on options  here , including warnings about the  dangers  involved when pets travel in the cargo hold.)

Carry-on pets

Even for pet owners whose animals are small enough to fly as a carry-on, traveling is no breeze.

"When I fly with him I have to go to the desk," Margaret Rauch, 44, told CBS MoneyWatch, referring to her 15-pound poodle mix, Soda. The New York City resident has taken Soda on dozens of flights to St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where Soda, now 4, was being fostered by a friend after being found as a stray puppy in 2021.

In addition to calling the airline in advance to register her dog for a flight, Rauch has to check in at the counter whenever she's traveling with Soda, so the airline agent can confirm her dog and pet carrier conform to the in-cabin pet requirements and that the flight hasn't already met its pet maximum.

image000000-1.jpg

Rauch, who said she would never consider putting Soda in cargo, applauded American Airlines' new policy, while noting that in her experience the one carry-on rule was rarely enforced.

"I feel the price is already high for what I get. Even with AA's rule change, I lose the underseat space," she said. "My dog creates no extra work for anyone."

Despite the added preparation, paperwork and hassle involved in flying with Soda — not to mention the unfriendly looks she occasionally detects from fellow passengers at the sight of her pet carrier — Rauch said, "It's absolutely worth it."

Asked how the experience could be improved, she pointed to early boarding for pet owners as something that would help.

"If you can get in early, get a seat and settle down, that is an accommodation I don't expect to see anytime soon but I think it makes sense," Rauch said.

Safety and comfort

For the many Americans who see their pets practically as family members, one of the most challenging aspects of flying is ensuring their animal's comfort and safety.

"The increasing humanization of pets, which involves treating them as part of the family rather than as mere animals, has increased the demand for pet travel services that are of high quality and can be customized to meet the specific needs of each pet," LinkedIn reported in December.

Among other tips, the U.S. Department of Transportation  and animal experts recommend that you not feed your pet four to six hours before a flight and limit their water intake. Others also suggest keeping bottled water on hand at all times. Additionally, most airlines require certain vaccination and vet certification that your pet is healthy enough to fly. Individual countries also have their own requirements for pets to enter.

Not surprisingly, some airlines do better than others at handling pets. One of the best-rated carriers for pet travel is Alaska Airlines, which has repeatedly topped rankings, such as NerdWallet's Most pet-friendly airlines of 2024.  In recent years, the airline also has maintained one of the industry's lowest incident ratings, according to Veterinarians.org. United Airlines and Delta are among the airlines with the highest incident rates, according to the pet information website.

On Rauch's first plane trip with Soda traveling home to New York, a layover in Miami led to the flight sitting on the tarmac for two hours. Calming treats are something that helps keeps her dog relaxed on flights. She also withholds Soda's food and limits his water intake up to five hours before a flight, which is also helpful given that he doesn't like using pet relief areas, which she said generally smell of urine and can be overwhelming for dogs. Flights between New York City and St. Croix are generally under six hours.

"I'm not sure how I'd handle a flight to Singapore," Rauch said.

Here's a rundown of U.S. airlines' pet travel policies, along with fees and and restrictions:

American Airlines changes pet policy, allows passengers to bring carry-on with pet carrier

ba pet travel policy

Good news for pet owners! American Airlines is relaxing its pet policy and allowing those who travel with their animal companions to bring a full-size carry-on too, along with the pet carrier.

"On flights with American you can bring one pet carrier as a carry-on if: You pay the carry-on pet fee; Your pet stays in the pet carrier and under the seat in front of you the entire flight," says American Airline's on their website , adding that passengers can also bring "one additional item on board with your pet," which can be a personal item like a purse or small handbag or a carry-on bag that fits in the overhead bin and meets the airline's requirements .

"Remember, you can only bring one with your pet carrier, not both," says American.

Earlier, travelers with pets were only allowed to bring a small personal item, that could fit under the seat if they were bringing their pet onboard. Anything bigger than that, like a carry-on, was required to be checked for $35. Alternatively, pet owners could put their pet in the cargo hold if they wanted to bring a bigger item with them on the flight.

However, there has been no change in fees required to bring a pet onboard. That remains fixed at $150, as per the American Airline's website. Meanwhile, pet strollers are still required to be checked in and all checked bag fees apply.

American Airlines did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for comment and what prompted the relaxation in policy.

Flying with a dog? Here’s how to ensure a smooth flight for your pet

Traveling with pets

Even with the relaxation in policy, experts advise thoughtful planning and research before traveling with pets and considering factors such as choosing a pet-friendly airline, insurance and preparing your pet for the journey ahead of time.

Every airline has its own guidelines for traveling with pets and the websites for domestic carriers like Southwest , JetBlue , American , Alaska , United and Delta each spell out what pets can travel where and the requirements for a carrier that can fit under the seat.

There are limitations on the number of pets a passenger can travel with on different aircrafts and travelers are advised to go through the airline policies before making their travel plans and booking tickets.

Similarly, country-based restrictions also apply, and travelers are advised to understand pet-entry requirements for their destination county when traveling abroad.

If you're looking for pet insurance at a cheap rate, Pets Best Pet Insurance has some of the lowest prices in the industry. You can go to any licensed veterinarian. However, it should be noted that in Insider's staff experiences with Pets Best policies, the reimbursement rate is also applied to your deductible.

So if you had a $500 deductible with 90% reimbursement, a $500 claim would leave you with another $50 left on your deductible, with charges applied based on the 90% reimbursement rate. This is not unusual, but it should factor into your budget and policy choices.

Pets Best offers three types of plans: accident-only, accident and illness, and a wellness plan. With highly customizable options, you can further lower your rate. Plus, the insurer doesn't have an age gap on pet insurance.

Unfortunately, if you're looking for alternative treatments like herbal and holistic treatments, consider searching elsewhere.

  • Annual coverage options: $5,000, unlimited
  • Reimbursement options: 70%, 80%, 90%
  • Deductible options: $50, $100, $200, $250, $500, $1,000

Many pet insurance providers will only insure pets younger than 14. Insurers may put an age cap on eligibility because pets, like humans, tend to develop health conditions as they age. However, Figo Pet Insurance will insure your furry friend, regardless of age. Whatever plan you consider, understand pet insurance companies will not cover preexisting conditions . For dogs or cats with a history of allergies, cancer, diabetes, or other conditions, this would still leave pet parents on the hook for related bills if diagnosed before buying your plan.

Figo offers three plans: the Essential plan, the Preferred plan, and the Unlimited plan. This insurer provides ample coverage choices to customize your policy based on your pet's needs and your budget.

Unfortunately, Figo doesn't sell a basic, accident-only plan, which is generally cheaper than an accident-illness or wellness program. Additionally, while it reimburses you, you must pay your vet bills upfront. Many pet parents resolve this issue using services like CareCredit, which can be paid off after completing the claim. If you're interested in Figo, we recommend Costco members go through the retail giant's partnership with Figo as you get 15% off standard premiums.

Lemonade Pet Insurance is a relatively new pet insurance company. Aside from pet insurance, it also offers home, car, and renters insurance (which received high marks for customer satisfaction). So you can bundle your pet insurance with other products for 10% additional savings.

If you're a tech-savvy shopper, you may appreciate Lemonade's highly-rated mobile app and user-friendly digital platform. You could purchase a policy, manage your claims, and access your insurance ID at the touch of your fingertip. Unfortunately, Lemonade is not available in all states yet. So be sure to check and see if Lemonade is available to you. But with up to $100,000 in annual coverage, Lemonade covers most significant health events for pets.

  • Annual coverage options: $5,000, $10,000, $20,000, $50,000, $100,000

Unfortunately, all pet insurance providers exclude preexisting conditions from coverage. This is because pet insurance companies have to mediate risk to keep premiums low for everyone. However, several companies will cover preexisting conditions if your pet has been symptom- and treatment-free for some time. ASPCA Pet Insurance is one of those providers.

ASPCA pet insurance will cover curable preexisting conditions if your cat, dog, and even horses if your pet has been symptom-free for over 180 days (excluding ligament and knee conditions).

With ASPCA pet insurance, you choose an accident-only, accident and illness, and preventative care plan. ASPCA pet insurance's comprehensive programs cover alternative therapies, behavioral issues, and congenital and hereditary conditions. The provider even covers pet microchipping. When going through the quoting process online, we were told we must speak to a live representative to obtain a quote for unlimited annual coverage.

  • Annual coverage options: $3,000, $4,000, $5,000, $7,000, $10,000
  • Average monthly cost: Dogs - $33; Cats - $17

Only a few providers offer alternative medicine if you prefer to take the holistic and herbal route when seeking treatment for your pet. Healthy Paws Pet Insurance offers a comprehensive list of non-invasive forms of therapy, including acupuncture, hydrotherapy, physical therapy, laser therapy, and massage care, as long as a licensed veterinarian provides the treatment.

The trade-off, however, is Healthy Paws won't cover preventative and wellness care. Its site specifies Healthy Paws believes wellness costs can be planned for. For example, you expect to do a yearly exam and get updated vaccines, and even if you save a little bit each month, you can plan accordingly. However, accidents and severe chronic illnesses are difficult to plan for, and costs are frequently unreasonable. So Healthy Paws focuses on the most significant area of need it sees.

  • Annual coverage options: Unlimited
  • Reimbursement options: 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90%
  • Deductible options: $50, $100, $250, $500, $750, $1,000
  • Average monthly cost: Dogs - $37; Cats - $18

Finding cheap pet insurance may be challenging if you have an exotic pet like a bird, rabbit, or reptile. Nationwide Pet Insurance is currently the only pet insurance company to offer wide-reaching coverage for many exotic pets. Other companies offer "discount plans," much like human prescription discount plans. However, you'd have to work with specific vets, and coverage would be specific to the treatment provided.

Nationwide pet insurance offers three pet insurance plans:

  • Major Medical (accident and illness plan)
  • Whole Pet (more comprehensive accident and illness plan)
  • A wellness plan

Nationwide offers various conditions in its plans. However, the coverage is set. Nationwide's sample accident and illness policy broke down many potential diagnoses with primary and secondary diagnoses allowances. Ultimately, each buyer will receive a policy breakdown. However, Nationwide is a more expensive pet insurance provider with limited flexibility.

  • Annual coverage options: Per condition
  • Reimbursement options: 50%, 70%, 90%
  • Deductible options: $250
  • Average monthly cost: Dogs - $35; Cats - $14

Read our Nationwide Pet Insurance review here.

Trupanion Pet Insurance is one of the pricier insurers on this list. Also, it offers a limited selection of policy options. However, if you're looking for a plan with unlimited coverage, Trupanion may be your winner. Unfortunately, we've all heard of the unexpected accident or illness in an otherwise healthy pet calling for emergency care.

Some emergency surgeries can easily surpass $20,000, and you might be on the hook for follow-up care, rehab, and even further surgeries. These are the times when unlimited care could be the saving grace to save your furry friend.

Trupanion offers deductibles ranging from $0 to $1,000. What's unique about this insurer is you'll only have to pay the deductible once per condition. For example, say your pet develops an illness requiring ongoing treatment. While most insurers will need you to pay a deductible yearly, you'll only have to pay your deductible once when the condition appears, potentially saving you money. This is handy for chronic conditions like allergies, diabetes, and cancer.

  • Reimbursement options: 90%
  • Deductible options: $0 to $1000
  • Average monthly cost: Dogs - $50; Cats - $22

Read our Trupanion Pet Insurance review here.

We review a company based on several benchmarks and compare it against the industry standard.

  • Affordability: We consider an insurer cheap if it meets or is below the industry average premiums. We also compare the prices against its competitors.
  • Policy customization: We look at the breadth of an insurer's policy options. Policy options include the number of annual coverages, deductibles, and reimbursement options. The price is not the only determining factor if you compare a $50 for unlimited coverage with 80% reimbursement with a $10 policy with a $5,000 annual cap.
  • Waiting period: A waiting period is the time between purchasing a policy and when coverage kicks in. The average waiting period for accident coverage is three days, and fourteen days for illness coverage. However, waiting periods for genetic conditions and serious illnesses could last a year.
  • Types of policies available: The best pet insurance companies typically offer three types of plans: accident-only, accident-illness, and wellness plans. We look through an insurer's website to determine if it sells some variation of those three plans.
  • Exclusions: Pets come in all shapes and sizes. Unfortunately, insurance companies will exclude some pets from coverage, like older pets or even those with curable preexisting conditions.
  • Company offerings: We look at the extensiveness of a company's policies. Some insurers offer coverage for microchipping, alternative medicine, and other unique conditions.

We go into further detail in our insurance rating methodology .

Which dog breed qualifies for the cheapest pet insurance?

Small, spayed, female mixed-breed dogs are the cheapest to insure, according to North American Pet Health Insurance Association (NAPHIA).

How much is a reasonable deductible for pet insurance?

Consider your needs before choosing a deductible. Choosing a high deductible may lower your monthly premiums. However, to start your coverage as soon as possible, consider choosing a low deductible, like $100 to $500.

When should you use pet insurance?

You'll decide what coverage you're willing to pay for upfront. However, whenever you have a qualifying claim, you should file a claim with your pet insurance provider. Insurance providers may have a time limit on claims, and you have to fulfill your annual deductible before full coverage will kick in.

What is the cheapest pet insurance?

Pets Best pet insurance costs an average of $20 for dogs and $12 for cats, the lowest prices among its competitors. Prices will vary based on your pet's age and breed.
