With these, there is some ghosting and a touch of bleedthrough, depending on the paper. I’m also using a dark blue ink which is big heavier.

Ghosting doesn’t bother me. But if it’s something that annoys you, then you may want to go for a notebook with a heavier GSM.

This doesn’t work well on standard paper like Field Notes.

There’s a lot of feathering and heavy ghosting on the other side.

• Ergonomically shaped grip section.
• Ink window in the barrel.
• Easy ink installation—simply put the cartridge inside the barrel or grip section, then screw the barrel and grip section together to automatically puncture the cartridge.
• Sturdy ABS plastic construction.
• Large, flexible metal pocket clip.
• One blue ink cartridge .
• To prevent the ink cartridge from being punctured in transit, this pen comes with a cardboard spacer ring between the barrel and grip section. The ring must be removed before using the pen.
• This pen may come with ink residue in the nib from being dip tested by LAMY at the factory. As with all new fountain pens, we recommend giving your pen a good cleaning before you use it.

Which Lamy Safari Color Should I Choose?

I am excited to buy a new Lamy Safari fountain pen but I am very indecisive on whether I should buy the Shiny Black version or the Charcoal version. I am looking for a professional-looking pen for everyday writing that doesn't lack style.

Furthermore, I heard from some of my friends that the finish of the Shiny Black version is less durable and is less resistant to scratches - is this true?

I purchased both the shiny black finish and the charcoal grey Lamy Safari pens at the same time. I use both of them as my workhorse pens at work. I keep both of them at my desk at work and I have noticed that I find myself reaching for the charcoal pen more often because it does have a more durable finish. The shiny black finish is very professional looking but I feel as though I need to shine it (to rid the finish of fingerprints) after each use. The charcoal matte finish does not show finger prints. My recommendation is this: if you are neat freak and hate finger prints the shiny black pen is not for you.

As for wear and scratching, my charcoal looks brand new under light and the shiny black shows scratches and is less than perfect looking.

I have the charcoal Safari and the black nib it comes with makes it the better choice, IMHO.

Unless you order the shiny black one and get a black nib for it as an extra, something which I know I am doomed to do.

Fountain Pens: Still cheaper than playing Warhammer 40K

From a purely utilitarian perspective (hey, that's what Lamy is all about isn't it...?) I'd go for the charcoal version as a workhorse pen since it has a textured surface that facilitates a good grip for those long writing sessions on hot, sweaty days.

Of the two, I'd probably go for the charcoal for durability. But I prefer the look of the shiny black with the silver clip.

How about spending a bit more to get an Al-Star? I'm thinking the blue or the graphite might hit the spot.

I own the Charcoal version. It has a matte finish that's nice to hold. It also has a black nib which hides nib creep if that bugs you.

Another vote for the charcoal from me...

Just be advised some of the nibs are supplied in chrome not black eg. the 1.1 italic is not available in a black nib

I agree with everybody else, the Charcoal looks better. The Shiny Black does get a bit scratched. Personally I like the chrome nib but swapping nibs is so easy!!

I recently bought my first FP. I went to a shop fully expecting to walk out with a charcoal. Shiny black was on the bottom of my list. In the end I went for the SB. It just seemed a touch more professional to me. But, I really could have gone either way. If you can, I recommend seeing them in person.

Have most of the colors.

If micro scratches will bother you go for Charcoal, but must say, my original red looks great after years of rigorous service.

I really like the look and the matte finish of the charcoal, but didn't like the feel of the pen in my hand. I found it more difficult to keep a grip on the pen. I am self-professed LAMY addict and I would say from personal experience that my work preferences are the white, the Vista, or the Al-Star in Graphite or Aluminum.

That's just my $0.02! Hope you're happy with your decision.
