San Antonio – variously known as “Alamo City,” the “River City” and “Military City” – is home to some truly iconic destinations and a few hidden gems.

A few common attractions are sure to show up on any to-do list: the  Alamo , the River Walk  and perhaps a trip to the blossoming Pearl District.

But once those boxes have been checked, what’s next? And when is the best time to see this city of many names at its best? Here’s when to go to San Antonio for festivals, food, the outdoors and more.

Visit in May to August to get outdoors in San Antonio

If you associate heat with San Antonio, you are not alone. By the time May rolls around, daily highs typically average between 85-95°F, with humidity above 60%. Despite this extreme heat, many locals invite friends and family to visit each summer. Because that is when San Antonio’s true colors can be seen.

And the best way to see those colors firsthand? Fireworks displays. Which happen all summer long.

Come Memorial Day, San Antonians celebrate that one out of every eight San Antonio residents is directly connected to the military in some way. This can be seen – and heard – in the sky throughout the summer.

People here truly love their fireworks. On July 4, the most extravagant (legal) displays can be found at Woodlawn Lake – but rest assured (local laws notwithstanding) that explosions can be seen and heard from almost any location come sundown.

By day, you can escape the heat with a long river float on the Comal River in nearby New Braunfels, take a dip on the beaches of Medina Lake or bring the whole family to San Pedro Springs.

January to April is party season, with the rodeo, Fiesta and more

Locals are partial to springtime in San Antonio: temperatures are at their most tolerable, and the city awakens as each flower blooms. The kickoff to the season is the  San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo  each February. Bring the kids to enjoy carnival rides and an opportunity to pet livestock – then come back later with friends for one of the many concerts that take place each night.

Visitors who can’t make it in time for the rodeo can still take advantage of the lower seasonal hotel rates to check out the Alamo on the anniversary of its battle (February 23), or set up a personal photo shoot in a field of bluebonnets (watch out for those rattlesnakes). You can even try and spot PGA legends at the Valero Texas Open .

But the real gem of the season is  Fiesta .

This annual multi-week celebration is one of San Antonio’s biggest draws. As April rolls around, Mission City plays host to countless parades, festivals and parties, kicking off with an Oyster Bake that draws 60,000–70,000 guests annually. Many parades occur throughout the celebration, most notably the Battle of Flowers Parade , the original official Fiesta event. Led by a passionate group of local women since 1891, this parade commemorates fallen heroes of the Alamo and San Jacinto Battles and is a local favorite (many in the area even get the day off work to celebrate).

Another key parade winds its way through San Antonio’s King William District toward the end of Fiesta, showcasing a collection of historic houses built by German settlers after the Civil War. The King William Parade and King William Fair  celebrate the neighborhood’s rich history and support the community each year. 

NIOSA (Night in Old San Antonio), is the most exciting of all Fiesta's events. This four-night festival takes place in the heart of downtown and features food booths, dancing, original local artwork, lots of drinks and more bright colors than one can imagine.

This is the real San Antonio. According to the festival organizers, locals consume “17,000 lbs of beef; 11,000 lbs of chicken; 5000lbs of sausage; 3000 turkey legs; 25,000 buns; 30,000 tortillas; 2000lbs of masa; 6000 tamales; 15,000lbs of fruits and vegetables; and 1000lbs of guacamole.” How could anyone resist such Texas-sized excess?

Watch the city twinkle for the holidays from September to December

Once summer has come and gone, the tourist season also begins to wane – which means great deals on lodging. Still, there is plenty to see throughout the fall without worrying about the imposing summer sun. 

Fright fans can head to the area amusement parks for seasonal spookiness and the  13th Floor Haunted House  on Commerce St is a long-standing Halloween tradition. 

Perhaps the prettiest way to see local icons the Alamo and River Walk is when they’re twinkling with holiday lights. In December, layer-wearing visitors take rides on riverboats beneath the cascading colored lights hanging from the bald cypress trees overhead. While the city no longer decorates a tree in  Alamo Plaza , there is no shortage of holiday spirit to be found there, with carolers and Santas spotted daily. 

In true San Antonio tradition, the city wouldn’t be able to ring in the new year without another incredible light show. Visitors looking to celebrate New Year’s Eve should head down to Hemisfair Plaza to watch the official fireworks display illuminate the downtown skyline.

Wondering about the best time to visit San Antonio, the capital of Texas and home to the famous Alamo and River Walk?

On my months-long Southwest vanlife trip, I crashed on my friend’s couch in Austin for weeks. So, of course, we had to go to San Antonio.

Even in the middle of winter, the weather was just Texas cold (so not very), but the coolest part was passing by the carolers on the river cruises and the fairy lights all around town. But come summer, ooh la la, heat, humidity, and crowds.

San Antonio’s weather swings from sizzling hot summers to comfortably cool winters, with a sprinkle of rain here and there. So, let’s break down the visitor seasons in San Antonio:

• Peak Season: May to October

Now, let’s dig a bit deeper into what each season looks like and some amazing annual events to go for. Whether you’re popping in for a quick San Antonio day trip or planning an extended exploration, from catching a Spurs game to biking through all the historic missions, these are the prime times to go to San Antonio.

Hands down, the best time to visit San Antonio is between November and April. During these months, the weather is just perfect, not too hot, not too cold, which means comfortable afternoons along the River Walk or dining outdoors at the Pearl District. I can attest that all the holiday lights really add to the city, without the heavy crowds or the summer heat.

For the absolute best weather in San Antonio, aim to visit in the spring, especially from March to April. During these months, you’ll be treated to mild temperatures averaging between 70°F to 80°F, perfect for meandering through the city’s colorful streets and parks. The weather is just right, not too hot for outdoor adventures and not too chilly at night.

The worst time to visit San Antonio is smack dab in the middle of summer, from late June to August. The scorching Texas heat during these months is unbearable for someone who isn’t a huge fan of humidity. Plus, this is when tourist spots get packed with summer holidays and vacations.

Spring in San Antonio is one of the best times to go, with the temperatures hovering around a blissful 70°F to 80°F. The blooming wildflowers paint the Texas Hill Country in bluebonnets, Indian paintbrushes, and evening primroses.

The city’s event calendar kicks into high gear, starting with the famous Fiesta San Antonio, a city-wide party of parades, food, music, and heritage.

Spring marks the ideal time for kayaking along the San Antonio River or hiking in Government Canyon State Natural Area. While not as crowded as summer, popular spots can get busy, especially around Fiesta. Just remember to pack a light jacket for those chillier evenings.

During these sweltering months, its famous River Walk is a main attraction, dining al fresco under the stars accompanying your moonlit strolls. And, even in summer, the trees are lit with twinkling lights.

With kids out of school, attractions like Six Flags Fiesta Texas and SeaWorld San Antonio have extended hours and nighttime shows. Summer is also when the Tejano Conjunto Festival and Juneteenth celebrations turn up the heat with music, food, and cultural showcases.

Aside from basking in the glorious weather, it’s also packed with events, with everything from art to beer to Día de los Muertos. Hiking and cycling trails seeing more foot traffic as locals and visitors alike take advantage of the bearable weather. The city’s numerous parks, like Brackenridge Park, become hubs of recreation, full of families enjoying picnics, and friends gathering for BBQs.

And while the rest of the country might be pumpkin-spicing everything, local eateries and breweries roll out seasonal offerings that infuse traditional autumn tastes with a dash of Texas flair, like pumpkin empanadas and pecan-flavored beers.

• Parktoberfest (September): Celebrate the start of Fall at Brackenridge Park with live music, food trucks, and a variety of beer from local and international breweries.
• Skylight Balloon Fest (September): Ever wanted to see a sky filled with colorful hot air balloons while you’re munching on carnival food plus live music, a car show, and activities for the kiddos?

Winter in San Antonio brings temperatures comfortably between the 40s and 60s, so while you might see the occasional Texan rocking shorts in December, it’s also cool enough to feel like winter.

There’s no need to shovel snow off your driveway, but the city offers its own version of the season, characterized by festive lights, holiday events, and a palpable cheer in the air.

One of the most magical places to be in San Antonio during the winter months is the River Walk. Thousands of twinkling lights reflect off the river’s surface as you stroll along the banks, serenaded by the sounds of carolers and the sights of holiday markets.

A host of events keep the city lively and buzzing, like the Ford Holiday River Parade right after Thanksgiving and the city’s various Christmas markets and fairs,

When is the best time to visit San Antonio?

Are you planning a visit to San Antonio? As a person who’s lived here for 10+ years, let me be the first to say, “Howdy!”

If you have some wiggle room with planning your vacation to the Alamo City, it’s a good idea to plan your trip around the weather and local events.

While a quick Google search will tell you that the average temperature in San Antonio is 72 degrees year-round, locals know better. Depending on when you visit, you might be contending with torrential downpours, terrible heat, or an empty events calendar. And where’s the fun in that?

If it’s your first time in San Antonio, here are the best times of the year to visit, as well as what there is to do in San Antonio—courtesy of a longtime local.

The best time to visit: Spring (March – June)

In my humble opinion, the best time to visit San Antonio is in the spring. The temperatures are absolutely wonderful, ranging from a low in the 50s to a high of 70s – 80s by the afternoon. It’s also the only time of year when you’ll see hints of this green stuff people call “grass” growing in our usually-sparse parks and lawns.

Aside from the weather, spring is also the best time to visit San Antonio for one big reason: Fiesta !

Fiesta is a month-long, citywide party celebrating San Antonio’s Mexican heritage. But it’s about a lot more than that. Fiesta is equal parts a small business support campaign, beauty pageant, food extravaganza, dance party, and an all-around good time. It’s one of San Antonio’s most famous attractions, pulling even the most sheltered locals into bustling tourist areas of downtown San Antonio.

The biggest downside to visiting San Antonio in the spring, though, is the rain. May and June are the rainiest months in San Antonio, with an average of 4 – 5 inches of rain every month (or more). And it comes down in buckets .

As long as you pack a decent umbrella and a pair of rain boots, you’ll be all right. San Antonio rain showers rarely last all day, and even if they do, there’s a good chance your plans will simply move indoors.

The second-best time to visit: Fall (October – November)

Fall is remarkably short in San Antonio, which makes it a true treat for locals, who hate the 100-degree days of summer. While fall tends to be hotter than spring, it’s still a great time to be in San Antonio, with temperatures in the 70s – 90s. Sure, you might still want to wear shorts and flip-flops, but fall in San Antonio definitely beats the summer.

Thanks to the milder temperatures, fall in San Antonio makes for some great outdoor exploring. Our city has gorgeous outdoor spaces, so take advantage of them! I recommend going for a walk in Phil Hardberger Park , where you can enjoy natural South Texas flora and fauna. If you’re up for a bike ride, visit the Greenway trails , which stretch on for 20+ miles through San Antonio.

If you’re in the mood for festivals, you’re in luck! San Antonio puts on one of the best Dia De Los Muertos (Day of The Dead) celebrations in the United States. National Geographic said so !

Snack on a sugar skull, stuff your gullet with  the best tamales , and watch processions of colorful dancers frolic to live music. Dia De Los Muertos is a colorful, family-friendly event that San Antonians love, so celebrate like a local if you’re in town in the fall.

The third-best time to visit: Winter (December – February)

How you feel about Texas winter is … relative. Texans think it’s miserable, while folks from the North tend to flock here for the milder temperatures.

The crazy thing about San Antonio in the winter is that the temps fluctuate wildly.

One Christmas, my family came to visit and we went to Sea World. It was December 26 and it was nearly 90 degrees. Another Christmas, it was windy, cold, and awful.

San Antonio winters are milder than winters up north, and you likely won’t see snow. But with temperatures in the 30s to the 80s, winters are unpredictable, which makes for tricky traveling.

The good news is that, even if it’s chilly, we get enough sunshine in San Antonio that colder temperatures are still much more bearable!

It’s more common to see indoor events, like concerts, in San Antonio during the winter. Events like San Antonio Zoo Lights and Christmas At The Caverns are a MUST, whether you’re a local or a visitor.

If you want to see the River Walk in all its glory, I recommend checking out the Holiday Lights on the River Walk . The city lights up over 100,000 lights across the River Walk, which makes for a gorgeous walk. They also do Holiday Boat Caroling down the San Antonio River!

There’s plenty to see in San Antonio during the winter, but I do recommend layering your clothes and buying a hot chocolate to overcome the chill.

The worst time to visit: Summer (July – September)

Yes, I know September is technically “fall,” but in San Antonio, I assure you it’s still summer. I knew how bad San Antonio summers would be when I moved here, but I never quite get over how H-O-T it is.

It isn’t unheard of for the temperatures to exceed 100 degrees by August. If you combine that with the high humidity and relentless sun, summer in San Antonio is awful .

I know people want to visit while the kids are out of school. There’s nothing wrong with that! But if you have to see San Antonio in the summer, I highly recommend going as early in the summer as possible. July temperatures are still somewhat reasonable, but August and September are one big, sunny hellscape.

San Antonio’s theme parks (Fiesta Texas and Sea World) are popular in the summer, but it’s so miserably hot that you’ll walk away with a sunburn—and possibly even dehydration.

If you do visit San Antonio in the summer, I recommend bringing a hat, sunblock, a misting fan, and a refillable water bottle.

Many agree that the best way to see San Antonio is by taking a stroll along the River Walk, or Paseo del Rio . San Antonio's most-visited tourist attraction meanders along the banks of the San Antonio River through the center of the city, connecting major attractions like Brackenridge Park and the San Antonio Museum of Art . Flanking the River Walk are dozens of restaurants, boutique hotels and sidewalk cafes shaded by colorful umbrellas. Street performers often fill the air with mariachi music.

If you want to see the River Walk from a different vantage point, try a boat tour. GO RIO offers a variety of cruises, including two-hour dinner cruises, short narrated excursions, private charters and river shuttle service from downtown to Museum Reach. Ticket fees vary depending on what type of journey you want, but you can expect to pay at least $14.50 per person, with discounts for locals, children, seniors and military members.

Once a Franciscan mission, it was here that 189 Texans fought and lost their lives in 1836 during a 13-day siege by Mexican ruler, President Antonio López de Santa Anna. The fight sparked Texas' struggle for independence and today, the Alamo stands as a tribute to these men, displaying artifacts belonging to some of the Alamo's most famous defenders, including Davy Crockett and James Bowie. Visit the Alamo Church on your own or by guided tour, and then check out the many other sites of interest and artifacts on the grounds. These include the Long Barrack (the Alamo's oldest building), the Alamo Exhibit (featuring more than 500 artifacts), restored historic cannons and the Statues of Heroes, bronze statues of Alamo soldiers in the Cavalry Courtyard. At the Living History encampment, visitors can learn more about frontier life in early Texas through hands-on demonstrations.

Recent visitors said the site can get rather busy, so try to visit early in the morning or later in the evening. Most travelers also agree that even when it's packed with tourists, the Alamo is a must-see site.

Brackenridge Park Brackenridge Park free

When the River Walk seems too busy, seek refuge from the heat and the swarms of tourists in Brackenridge Park. Its 343 acres offer much in the way of relaxation: rustic stone bridges and shaded walkways are perfect for strolling, and the Japanese Tea Garden beckons to botanists. Dress casual so you can take advantage of Brackenridge's jogging trails, golf course and athletic fields. The park also hosts outdoor concerts in the natural Sunken Garden Theater. In and around the park, you'll find popular attractions like the Witte Museum and the San Antonio Botanical Garden (about a half-mile east).

Aside from the Alamo , this is where all of San Antonio's historic missions – Mission San José, Mission Concepción, Mission Espada and Mission San Juan – are located, making this a must-see site for history buffs. Established along the San Antonio River in the 18th century by Franciscan friars, the missions stand as a reminder of Spanish colonizers' success in spreading Catholicism through the Southwest and into Mexico. Each mission is beautiful in its own way, from the undisturbed frescos at Mission Concepción to the Romanesque arches of Mission San Juan. Scattered around the missions are remnants of granaries, workshops and water mills.

The missions have complicated stories, as many Native Americans who lived within the missions adapted to the Spanish way of life (sometimes willingly), forgoing their religions, languages and customs. However, the missions still retain many of Native American influences including the building frescoes and mission customs. In honor of this history, the park was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015.

If you're touring San Antonio, the San Fernando Cathedral is hard to miss. Still an active house of worship, the cathedral is one of the oldest in the country, constructed in the mid-1700s by colonists from the Canary Islands . It was here that Wild West legend James Bowie was married and that General Antonio López de Santa Anna indicated his plans for the Alamo . Local legend claims that many heroes from the Alamo battle (including Davy Crockett) are buried here in an unmarked tomb. Despite enduring damage from a fire in the 19th century, the San Fernando Cathedral maintains its antique appearance, beckoning you to tour its breathtaking interior.

While the interior is open during the day, travelers insist that you visit the church at night to take advantage of the free light show. Every Tuesday through Sunday at 9 and 9:30 p.m., a dazzling video art installation entitled "The Saga" is projected onto the building's facade.  You'll want to double-check the Main Plaza website to make sure the show is occurring.

Idyllically set along the San Antonio River, the Blue Star Arts Complex is a vibrant mixed-use property that serves as the nucleus of local art in San Antonio's Southtown. Repurposed warehouses hold shops, restaurants and an arthouse cinema, in addition to studios and galleries. Don't miss the Contemporary at Blue Star, which hosts more than 20 exhibitions each year within its four on-site galleries (and various off-site locations). 

Aside from checking out the art and shops at the Blue Star Arts Complex, one of the most recommended activities is to rent a bicycle from Blue Star Bike Shop to either ride around neighboring King William and Southtown or along the Mission Trail (Blue Star is a trailhead for Mission Reach, which connects four of the five missions to the south). After you return your bike, enjoy beer and a burger at Blue Star Brewing Company, located next door.

Located about 15 miles northwest of downtown San Antonio, Six Flags Fiesta Texas is a year-round destination for families and adrenaline-seeking travelers. The park's attractions run the gamut from coasters to slides to pools to go-karts. With shopping options and an assortment of restaurants to boot, it's not hard to spend an entire day (or more) at Six Flags Fiesta Texas.

Past visitors recommended purchasing the Flash Pass to skip the lines. Long lines are a common complaint at Six Flags, so even if you don't purchase the Flash Pass, be sure to reserve a full day for the park to account for time spent waiting in line.

McNay Art Museum McNay Art Museum

The McNay's collection includes more than 22,000 pieces that range from post-impressionist and modern works to Native American art. Visitors will recognize artists like Edward Hopper, Paul Cézanne, Diego Rivera, Auguste Rodin and Henri Matisse. The museum is housed in a Spanish Colonial Revival residence on 23 acres of pristine green space, originally owned by artist and collector Marion Koogler McNay. The main draw may be the art, but walking around the grounds is an experience in its own right.

Museumgoers say the exhibits are great and appreciate the wide variety of art on displays. They recommend making use of the museum's free hours, which are Thursday night from 4 to 9 p.m. and the first Sunday of every month from noon to 5 p.m.

Prepare to be awed by the sheer diversity and size of the San Antonio Botanical Garden. This well-tended, 38-acre complex features wildflower-filled meadows, native gardens, a 34-bed culinary garden, an outdoor kitchen that hosts cooking classes taught be local chefs and a Family Adventure Garden with activities for kids. The striking glass structures of the conservatory house tropical palms, ancient ferns and an incredible array of plants from the rainforest to the deserts of Mexico and South Africa. Walking trails stretch out in every direction, encouraging visitors to get up-close to the plant life. 

According to park visitors, it generally takes at least two hours to explore everything.

Although it was never actually a palace, this adobe building certainly looks the part with rooms heavily decorated in 18th-century furnishings and a spectacular cobblestone patio. Explore the property at your leisure with a pamphlet given to you at the door.

Recent visitors discourage visiting this site with kids, however, as there's little here to keep tots entertained. They also warn the palace doesn't take too long to go through, so history enthusiasts may be a bit disappointed.

Morgan's Wonderland is the world's only amusement park designed for children of all abilities. This sprawling, inclusive park was designed by former homebuilder Gordon Hartman — in honor of his daughter, Morgan, who has cognitive and physical disabilities – along with a local team of medical experts, engineers and therapists. There are more than 25 accessible attractions, rides and play areas, including a deluxe carousel, a Ferris wheel, an amphitheater, a catch-and-release fishing lake and a sensory play center. Ruby City is a contemporary art center with a unique origin story. Shortly before artist and megacollector Linda Pace passed away in 2007, she had a vision for a home for her collection of more than 800 pieces of art – a vision that literally came to her in a dream. Pace drew the images from her dream and passed them on to renowned architect Sir David Adjaye, who designed the bright crimson structure. Today, this 14,000-square-foot space is a treasure trove of paintings, sculptures and installations from both local and international artists such as Joan Mitchell, Marina Abramovic and Donald Moffett.

Visitors love Ruby City for its incredible architecture, thought-provoking exhibits and beautiful grounds.

Featuring koi ponds, arched bridges, shaded paths and a 60-foot waterfall, the Japanese Tea Garden is an oasis away from the hustle and bustle of downtown San Antonio. Native and adaptive Texas tree species abound, and the tiered gardens and floral display are in bloom throughout the year. When the state's sweltering temperatures take over, there's no better reprieve than lazily tubing the Kristal River; slipping and sliding down body slides like Downhill Racer and Soda Straws; or sipping a frozen cocktail at a swim-up bar.

DoSeum DoSeum

Children of all ages are in for a treat at the DoSeum. With 68,000 square feet of interactive exhibit space, there's enough here to keep young brains and bodies engaged for hours. Kids can use their math and reasoning skills at the Spy Academy, work with tools and engage building skills at the Zachry Innovation Station, play with sound and light at the Sensations Studio and splash around outside at WaterWorks. This is just the tip of the iceberg at the DoSeum, whose exhibits are all designed with a sustainable, creative approach and a strong STEM focus. 

Parents recommend arriving early or visiting during the week to avoid long lines. Most say their kids had a great time, but a few note upkeep issues, such as broken and sticky exhibit pieces.

Pick up a cowboy hat at the gift shop to complete the experience. 

If you're at all squeamish about taxidermies, visitors recommended skipping this attraction. The food at the cafe hits the spot. Try the Buckhorn Burger or the Lone Star Chili Bowl, and wash it all down with a Buckarita, a refreshing mix of tequila and prickly pear juice. There's a kids' menu, too.

January is the coldest month in San Antonio with high temperatures averaging 62°F (18°C). Average low temperatures sink down to 39°F (4°C). This month is also the driest in San Antonio with just over an inch and a half of rain (42 mm) to be expected.

In February , the temperatures increase a little bit for the last month of winter. Average high temperatures are 67°F (20°C) while average low temperatures hover at around 42°F (6°C).

San Antonio Weather in March: Spring begins in March at San Antonio. Temperatures remain generally cool during this season as average high temperatures peak at 74°F (24°C). Average low temperatures can get as low as 50°F (10°C).

April ’s climate sees average high temperatures of 80°F (27°C). Low temperature averages also make a bit of an increase compared to the previous month at 57°F (14°C).

In May, the average high temperatures and average low temperatures continue to increase and range between 86°F (30°C) to 65°F (19°C). May is also the rainiest month of the year in San Antonio with an average rainfall of 5 inches (120 mm).

Attend the Annual Fiesta Festival

Fiesta San Antonio , the city's annual springtime festival, is typically centered near the Historic Market Square every April. The extravaganza lasts over a week and is—put simply—an exciting and colorful celebration of culture. The historic Battle of Flowers Parade, the main event, was established back in 1891 by a group of determined women (now a formal association) to honor the heroes who fought for Texas independence at The Alamo. The parade will commemorate its 133th anniversary in 2024. 

Hop Aboard a Boat Cruise

You can find boat cruises around the touristy Historic Market Square and La Villita, which are especially fun during the holidays when the River Walk is decked out in Christmas lights. Stop Into Historic Watering Holes

Since the River Walk spans miles and can be a day-long adventure, you can easily plan plenty of stops at delicious restaurants and storied ice houses. Located off the River Walk near downtown, stop into Esquire Tavern —first opened nearly 100 years ago in 1933—for a cocktail perched at what was once declared the "longest wooden bar top in Texas." 1.  The Alamo

Ask any local about The Alamo , and you’ll get a school textbook of snippets. Folks statewide have been reciting them since they were kiddos, and as a result, The Alamo is the most visited attraction in all of Texas (yes, even more than Six Flags!). Join them here at the 18th-century Battle of the Alamo site, where Texas won independence and became a self-governing republic, and remember its historical significance via live demonstrations, short films, and detailed exhibition halls.

2.  The River Walk

You can’t visit San Antonio without a day, or even the whole weekend, on its bustling hangout. Morning, noon, and night, the River Walk (or Paseo del Rio), is lit up like a little cultural wonderland, full of restaurants, shops, museums, hotels, and more – all looking over the river itself. The river is 15 miles long and found 20 feet below street level, but this five-mile stretch is where it’s at. Here with that special someone? There’s nothing more romantic than a river taxi or a couple’s selfie on the bridge.

3.  Hopscotch

If you feel like doing something artsy that’s also a little bit boozy, head to Hopscotch . Since opening, the immersive art experience has drawn visitors who flock to get selfies with vibrant yet thoughtful displays from talented artists across a variety of mediums. Not to spoil the surprise, but expect plenty of mind-boggling optical illusions and ample neon lights. A full-service bar turns up the fun, and many of the exhibits (some on rotation) are themed to diversity and inclusion—proving that love is love in Texas, too.

4.  Pearl District

One of the great things about San Antonio is its little pockets of food, culture, and crafts, where you can lose the day to great food, music, and general vibes. The Pearl District takes the crown for being the most charming cultural hotspot, with fabulous architecture to admire and dotted with great restaurants (hello, Mon Chou Chou ). Whether or not you’re staying at the iconic Hotel Emma , you’re sure to spend a lot of time here. Flick through books at Twig Book Shop , pop into boutique stores, and end with a wine in Boiler House ’s garden.

5.  San Antonio Museum of Art

The best bit about this museum? You can float past it on a river taxi—and this complex of historic buildings is truly something to behold. But don’t get caught up in its architecture because the art collections indoors have a lot to say for themselves, too. The San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA) actually boasts one of the biggest Roman, Greek, and Egyptian art collections in the south, as well as an art collection spanning 5,000 years, from antique to contemporary.

6.  McNay Art Museum

You’ll need to get out of downtown for this one, but it’s worth every extra mile (just five, to be exact). McNay Art Museum is set against a Spanish Colonial mansion backdrop and named after artist and art collector Marion Koogler McNay, who moved to San Antonio from Ohio in 1926. McNay began construction on a house in 1926 that would become the McNay Art Museum, the first modern art museum of Texas, in 1954. During her lifetime, McNay collected over 700 works of art by Diego Rivera, Van Gogh, Georgia O'Keeffe and Picasso. Still, today, the museum has expanded to include 22,000 pieces of art, mostly from the 19th- and 20th centuries.

7.  Natural Bridge Caverns

The Natural Bridge Caverns are the largest known commercial caverns in Texas. Four students from a San Antonio university in the 1960s discovered the caverns named after a 60-foot limestone slab bridge found at the entrance. The natural wonder attracts a daily dose of tourists and locals for tours 180 feet below ground that show ancient formations and large caves. With multiple tour options and surface attractions (like obstacle courses and gem and fossil mining), there's something for everyone at Natural Bridge Caverns.

8.  San Antonio Botanical Garden

Covering 38 acres of land, the non-profit San Antonio Botanical Garden is a family-friendly site that delights all sorts of visitors. Each season brings new exotic plants, desert greenery, and even a rose garden that attracts a wide range of birds and insects. Though you came here specifically for the Texas native flora, of which there’s an abundance. Stick around after exploring and dine at their scenic garden restaurant, Jardin .

9.  El Mercado

El Mercado (or the Market Square) covers three blocks of an outdoor plaza lined with over 100 locally-owned restaurants and shops. As the largest Mexican market in the United States, El Mercado is a central staple of the cultural experience of San Antonio. Visitors to El Mercado can explore indoor and outdoor shops full of authentic Mexican crafts, snack on delicious Mexican pastries and Tex-Mex at Mi Tierra Restaurant & Bakery, and enjoy live bands and other entertainment in the plaza on the weekends.

The Esquire Tavern opened in 1933 to celebrate the end of Prohibition, and aside from a lil’ 2006-2011 hiatus, San Antonians have been oiled up ever since. It’s officially the oldest bar in town, and a good chance to get acquainted with what the locals love doing most: drinking and watching ball. Pull up a chair at the 100-foot mahogany bar, the longest bar top in Texas, and mingle while the game blares, or downstairs get a seat overlooking the romantic river walk and toast to the orange sunset. Live music strums most nights of the week.

11.  La Panaderia

Get your sugar and camera roll fix at the city’s most famous bakery. La Panaderia specializes in handmade bread and pan dulce inspired by Mexico’s Golden Era, using a special 48-hour fermentation process that harbors results like no other. Despite several locations all over town and a decade in business, there’s always a line (especially at weekends) and the colorful creations are forever social media sensations.

12.  Japanese Tea Garden

This former rock quarry, first conceived in the early 20th century, has been transformed into one of the most tranquil places in the city. Wander around the open space filled with gorgeous floral displays and let your feet lead you to the 60-foot tall waterfalls surrounded by koi ponds. The Japanese Tea Garden is also free to enter, so anyone can enjoy it. Hungry? Grab a snack at the Jingu House Cafe on-site.

13.  Fiesta

The annual Fiesta festival originated in 1891 as a way to memorialize heroes from the Battle of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto. Tradition is upheld today as the city throws a huge extravaganza each year (dates vary, but plan on it being in April), including over 50 events around town. Make sure to check out the Texas Cavaliers River Parade, held in the San Antonio River, and the Fiesta de Los Reyes at Market Square (where flower crowns are widely worn and available)

14.  San Antonio Missions National Historical Park

As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, San Antonio Missions National Historical Park preserves four Spanish frontier missions and entices visitors to learn more about San Antonio’s history. Step back 300 years and experience Spanish colonial history while visiting Mission Concepcion, Mission Espada, Mission San Juan, and Mission San Jose. All four missions are still home to active Catholic parishes with regular services. Keep in mind that the missions are spread far apart but are connected by the San Antonio River Walk Hike and y'all can join various Mission Bike Tours to navigate between them either self-guided or with an expert. Tip: go the electric route unless you’re a pro cyclist.

15.  Six Flags Fiesta Texas

In case you didn’t know, Six Flags is to Texas what Disney World is to Florida, albeit on a much smaller scale. But Fiesta still packs a mighty punch when it comes to fun, and the theme park can be enjoyed by both big kids and little ones alike. There are over 40 rides to get a thrill out of, including Goliath, an adrenaline rocket that’s not for the faint-hearted. Of course, because this is Texas (read: hot), a water park is on hand to cool patrons down.

16.  San Pedro Springs Park

San Pedro Springs Park , the second oldest park in the U.S., is home to what's arguably one of the nation's best swimming spots. The pool is surrounded by BBQ pits, picnic locations, and tennis courts, and in summer, it's quite the hotspot. That’s despite alcohol being prohibited—the revelers here are living it up on fresh H20. 46 acres of outdoor heaven provide ample space to frolic under the sun.

This is one of the country’s most innovative children’s museums . The rotating exhibition includes an impressive spy academy, an outdoor park, spaces designed to inspire creativity, and hands-on exhibits that teach kids about science, art, sound, and more. With over 68,000 square feet of interactive space, this is a must for families even during the busy holiday season.

18.  Best Quality Daughter

You may think of San Francisco when it comes to Asian cuisine in America, but Best Quality Daughter helps Antonio steer your minds south. It’s perched within a charming pink bungalow right off the Pearl. Most of the main dishes are served family-style, such as the Hakka stuffed tofu and the orange chicken, and a separate bar with Thai tea cocktails is worth coming in early or staying late for.

19.  Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center

Remember: everything is bigger in Texas, including religious iconography. Founded in 1980, the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center has the largest Virgin Mary mosaic in America. At 40 feet tall, the mosaic was constructed in the shape of a prayer candle by artist Jesse Trevino, whose work can be found all over town. After admiring the mosaic, venture inside to learn more about the center which preserves Latino arts and culture through workshops, art shows, and dance, music, and theater programs.

20.  Buckhorn Saloon and Museum

If taxidermy, Texas history, and burgers and beer are your things then the Buckhorn Saloon and Museum is for you. A local bellhop, Albert Friedrich, opened the saloon in 1881; at the time, if customers didn’t have enough cash to pay for drinks, Friedrich was known to accept horns, pelts, and other objects as forms of payment. His gamble paid off: the saloon is now also a museum, displaying eclectic oddities the owner collected over the years (think rattlesnakes in jars, antlers, and much more). Today, the Buckhorn Saloon and Museum has expanded to include a Texas Ranger Museum with quirky rotating exhibits, a cafe, and the original bar where Pancho Villa is said to have planned the Mexican Revolution and Teddy Roosevelt recruited the Rough Riders.

I’ve only scratched the surface of fun things to do in San Antonio, so bear with me as I tell you about all the other awesome things that you need to see in this lovely Texas city.

San Antonio is a great destination for couples, families, and solo travelers. Anyone can find something fun to do in this city, whether it’s touring a historic landmark or tasting local specialties in a restaurant inside an 18th-century brewery building.

Best Things To Do In San Antonio, Texas

The things to do in San Antonio range from fun tours of historic neighborhoods to sightings of Teddy Roosevelt’s ghost. The city has so much to offer that anyone can have fun here regardless of their age and personal interests. 

Kids love the amusement and theme parks, young adults enjoy the colorful city center with fun shops and eateries, while proper adults can tour the Alamo and the historic Mission churches. Or have a blast at the largest Six Flags in Texas because adults can enjoy amusement park rides too.

1. San Antonio River Walk 

San Antonio’s River Walk is the top attraction in this Texas city. Landscaped walking paths are available on either side of the San Antonio River for roughly 15 miles. Shops, eateries, and hotels line the promenade, which sits one level below the city’s main roads. The Downtown area of the River Walk is the most popular with tourists and locals, but the promenade extends many miles north, and you could continue walking for more than an hour. 

The River Walk can get awfully crowded in the summer months, but finding a more tranquil area shouldn’t be a challenge. Just keep walking past all the busy restaurants and bars; the further down the River Walk you go, the smaller the crowds you’ll encounter.

How iconic is the San Antonio River Walk? Enough that the San Antonio Spurs celebrate winning the title by doing a victory boat parade. 

Practical Information: San Antonio River Walk is a 15-mile promenade accessible for free at any time of day. 

2. Tour La Villita Historic Village

La Villita is a historic artsy neighborhood sitting one level above the San Antonio River Walk. The district is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places for its 19th-century buildings that serve as examples of early residential development in San Antonio.

This old neighborhood is home to art galleries, shops, and colorful sculptures. If you like the sugar skull motif, you’ll love it in this picturesque little village. 

La Villita assembly hall is also in this district, and it’s an iconic sight in the San Antonio skyline. The building is known for the painted flower on its concave roof, and you can easily spot it from the observation deck at the Tower of the Americas. 

Practical Information: La Villita Historic Village is accessible any time of day, for free. Most shops in the neighborhood are open from 10 AM to 6 PM. 

3. Shopping & Dining At The Historic Market Square

The Historic Market Square is in western San Antonio, outside the center of the city. And it’s absolutely worth it to go out of your way to see it because it’s one of the city’s best destinations for souvenir shopping and cheap food. 

Come here for authentic Tex-Mex food, colorful clothes, jewelry, and all sorts of trinkets and crafts. Even if you’re not very hungry when you visit the Historic Market Square, I recommend you try at least the puffy tacos. They’re an iconic San Antonio delicacy and one of the best local foods. 

Bean burgers, chicken on a stick, and sweet potato fries are other San Antonio specialties to try if you’re doing a culinary tour of the city. I will say that it’s a good thing most of the city center is walkable because it will take thousands of steps to burn off all those delicious calories. 

Practical Information: The Historic Market Square is open from 10 AM to 6 PM. Entrance to the area is free of charge. 

4. Appreciate The View From The Tower of The Americas

The Tower of the Americas is one of two observation decks in Texas and the only one in San Antonio. It was initially built for the 1968 World Fair, and it took only 18 months to complete the construction. 

The tower is the centerpiece of the HemisFair Park in Downtown San Antonio. It has an observation deck on the top floor and a revolving restaurant, where you can enjoy a nice (but pricey) meal along with pretty views. Visitors who purchase tickets for the observation deck also get access to the 4D theater, where they can enjoy a 4D ride over Texas. 

Insider Tip: Come here after dark for a fabulous view of the San Antonio skyline. 

Practical Information: The Tower of the Americas is open from 10 AM to 10-11 PM. Tickets for the observation deck are $18.50 for adults. 

5. Walk The San Antonio Mission Trail

Head to the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park to discover one of only 24 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the United States. San Antonio missions were important outposts for Catholic religious orders established by the Spanish colonists. The purpose of the missions was to help spread Christianity among the native population. 

Four out of five San Antonio missions are preserved in the park; the fifth is by far the most famous known, known as the Alamo. The Mission Trail is a walking path through the national park, which allows you to discover all four missions on the grounds. Bicycles are available, and they’re the best for getting from one mission to another quickly. 

It’s also possible to just drive from one spot to another, and this is the best option if you have very limited time in San Antonio. If you only have time to visit one of these landmarks, make it Mission San Jose. It’s the best-preserved building with period furnishings and an exhibit that offers insight into the lives of the local population in the early 18th century. 

Practical Information: San Antonio Missions National Historical Park is open daily from sunrise to sunset. Entrance to the park is free of charge. 

6. Go On A River Cruise 

Don’t have enough time to explore the historic River Walk on foot? That’s fine because you can tour the entire pedestrian area in a boat in about 30 minutes! Go Rio cruises are available at multiple spots on the River Walk, so just walk along the river until you spot a Go Rio ticket booth or empty boats. 

The boats depart every 15-20 minutes, so you might have to wait a little while for a free seat. Buy tickets online if you don’t want to wait in line at the ticket booth, but keep in mind that they’re not timed tickets. Seats on the boat are given out on a first-come-first-served basis. 

I recommend doing the river cruise at night for the absolute best experience. The boats all light up in bright colors, and there’s something special about the River Walk after dark. All the cruises are narrated, and the guide will tell you a lot about the history of the River Walk and its importance for San Antonio and its residents.

7. Ghost Tour of San Antonio

San Antonio is an excellent destination for ghost hunts and haunted tours. If that doesn’t sound like something you would enjoy, just skip to the next thing on this list before I traumatize you with ghost stories. 

The most haunted building in the city is of course the Alamo, where people to this day report seeing ghosts of Texan soldiers. Opposite the historic fort is the Menger Hotel, another popular destination in the city for ghost sightings. Guests have reported hearing strange noises in the hotel, seeing faces in the mirror, smelling cigar smoke, and even encountering the ghost of Teddy Roosevelt at the bar. 

Visit all of San Antonio’s haunted sites on your own, or arrange a g uided ghost tour of the city . They take place after dark, of course, and are my recommendation if you want to end the night terrified and lie in bed restless. 

Practical Information: Ghost tours of San Antonio take place at night and usually last for 2-3 hours. 

8. Get Lost At The Japanese Tea Garden

The Japanese Tea Garden is close to the San Antonio Zoo, north of the city center. The botanical garden dates back to the early 20th century and features koi ponds, stone bridges, a pagoda, and a waterfall. Countless plants and trees adorn this lush garden, and the mesmerizing landscaping is the best thing about it. 

Come here if you ever need to escape the busy streets of Downtown San Antonio. You can forget you’re in Texas for a moment as you roam around the grounds of the captivating botanical garden. 

Practical Information:  The Japanese Tea Garden is open from 7 AM to 5 PM. Entrance to the botanical garden is free of charge. 

9. Visit The Alamo 

The Alamo is probably the most famous landmark in the state of Texas . The legendary fortress is one of the earliest missions that were built in Texas, and it’s formerly known as  Misión San Antonio de Valero. 

It would become world-famous after the Battle of the Alamo, which was a crucial turning point in the Texas Revolution. Today, the small fortress serves as a museum with a collection of artifacts from the revolution era, one of the most important events in Texas history. The Alamo is one of the most popular historic sites in the United States, and as such, it tends to be busy all the time. 

The complex is rather small, and it doesn’t take too much time to tour it. However, the queues are often long, and waiting in line is inevitable at such a popular landmark. Entrance to the on-site church is free of charge, but it’s necessary to buy tickets for other buildings on the grounds. 

Practical Information: Tickets for the Alamo exhibit are $14 for adults. A guided tour of the complex with entrance to all the buildings is $45. 

10. Sightseeing in The Pearl District 

The Pearl District is the area of San Antonio surrounding the historic Pearl Brewery. Originally founded as the City Brewery in 1881, it would quickly become the largest brewery in Texas and the only one to survive the prohibition. 

The brewery closed down in 2001, and the building today houses shops and restaurants. Come here to discover a different part of San Antonio, one that’s full of history and interesting landmarks but away from the city center. 

The Grotto is also in the Pearl district, situated on the River Walk south of the brewery building. It’s an artificial riverfront cave with faces carved into the rocks, walking paths through the cliffs, and man-made waterfalls. 

Practical Information: The Pearl Brewery is approximately a 30-minute walk from the Downtown, accessible by walking paths on the San Antonio River Walk. 

11. Discover The Collection at  The San Antonio Museum of Art

The San Antonio Museum of Art is situated in the former building of the Lone Star Brewery, just a 15-minute walk from the vibrant Pearl District. It boasts an extensive exhibit of Latin American, Greek, Roman, and Egyptian art that spans nearly 5,000 years. Items exhibited at the museum include paintings, sculptures, photographs, furniture, everyday objects, and much more. 

The museum’s collection of American artwork and artifacts spans two floors and includes a special section dedicated to artists from Texas. Also, the Asian artwork exhibit is the largest of its kind in the Southwest, making this museum an absolute must for all art lovers in San Antonio. 

Practical Information: The San Antonio Museum of Art is open from 10 AM to 5/7 PM every day except Monday. Tickets are $20 for adults. 

12. Amusement Park Rides at Six Flags Fiesta Texas

If you’re in San Antonio with kids, there’s no better place to take them than Six Flags Fiesta Texas. The theme park is also known as The Thrill Capital of South Texas with more than 60 rides throughout the grounds, including a water park with at least 15 slides. If you’re looking for even more water rides, I suggest you check out SeaWorld San Antonio instead. 

Rising to an impressive 205 feet, the Scream drop tower is the park’s scariest ride. If you want to feel adrenaline coursing through your veins, it’s THE ride for you. But the centerpiece of the amusement park is the Boomerang rollercoaster, featuring insane twists and turns at a speed of almost 60 miles per hour. 

The amusement park can be done in a couple of hours if you’re short on time, or you could spend an entire day here going on different rides and having the time of your life. If you decide to stay at the Six Flags Fiesta for at least half a day, consider getting a One-Day Dining Deal to save money on food. 

Practical Information: One-day passes for the Six Flags Fiesta Texas theme park start at $45. 

13. Explore The Natural Bridge Caverns

One of the best natural landmarks in Texas is just a 30-minute drive from central San Antonio. Come here for underground tours of the caverns but also to have some fun on the adventure courses above ground. 

The caverns are remarkable to see with all the different geological formations. However, I don’t recommend this tour for travelers with limited mobility because it can get very strenuous at times. Also, the humidity is constantly at 99% and the temperature is normally around 70 degrees, which is uncharacteristically warm for underground caves. 

The adventure park features a maze, rope courses, and multiple zip rails above the ground with panoramic views of Texas Hill Country. Everything here is kid-friendly, and there are even a couple of exhibits that are specifically designed for the youngest visitors. 

Insider Tip: Wear sturdy shoes because the cavern floor is wet and slippery. 

Practical Information: The fee for cavern tours is approximately $30-50, depending on the day you visit and the type of tour you choose. Natural Bridge Caverns Park is open daily from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM. 

14. Native Flora at San Antonio Botanical Garden

San Antonio Botanical Garden is a vast green space in the northern part of the city. Featuring ponds, landscaped walking trails, and lush greenery all around, the place is a sight for sore eyes if you’re tired of looking at the downtown buildings. 

Several conservatories are at the botanical garden, and they’re special not only for the plants you’ll see inside but also for their shape. The glass structures are practically pieces of art and wonderful to see. The plants and flowers inside are mostly the ones that are native to the region, but they’re nonetheless lovely. 

The botanical garden also features a cafe, and it’s a great place to sit down for a quick break before you move on to the next San Antonio landmark. 

Practical Information: The San Antonio Botanical Garden is open from 9 AM to 5 PM. The entrance fee is $18-22 for adults. 

15. Jump Into an LED Ball Pit at Hopscotch San Antonio

Hopscotch San Antonio is a modern art gallery with very fun interactive exhibits. There are only two Hopschotch galleries in the United States, so a trip to San Antonio is the perfect opportunity to discover this fabulous space. 

It’s unlike any art gallery you’ve ever visited. Many exhibits are interactive and extremely fun. You can play in an LED ball pit, walk around a rainbow cave, and jump around on a quantum trampoline. The exhibit also features murals and sculptures, but they’re far from traditional artworks. 

The art gallery is also one of the most Instagrammable places in San Antonio, so you must come here if you want to commemorate your trip to this city with epic photos. 

Insider Tip: To engage with some of the interactive exhibits, visitors must take off their shoes and wear socks. 

Practical Information: Hopscotch San Antonio is open Wednesday to Sunday from 12 PM to 10 PM. General admission to the art gallery is $24. 

16. Travel Back In Time At The Buckhorn Saloon & Museum

Head to the Buckhorn Saloon & Museum in Downtown San Antonio for a dash of the Wild West. The restaurant is styled as a traditional Western saloon and features two very interesting museums on the grounds. A single ticket grants you access to both museums. 

The Buckhorn Museum features a bizarre collection of taxidermied animals, which I did not like very much. Don’t get me wrong, it’s an interesting collection and I haven’t seen anything like it anywhere in my life, it’s just that taxidermy freaks me out quite a bit. 

I enjoyed the Texas Ranger Museum much more, with its reconstruction of a Wild West town, complete with a saloon and a jail cell. You can walk through those classic saloon doors and pose for photographs behind bars, pretending to be a proper outlaw. The exhibit also features guns of famous Texas rangers, as well as their badges and photographs. 

Practical Information: The Buckhorn Saloon & Museum is open from 10 AM to 5 PM. Admission tickets are $22.99 and include entrance to all the exhibits in the building.  You can book them here.

17. Tour The Spanish Governor’s Palace

The Spanish Governor’s Palace is somewhat of a hidden gem in San Antonio. Include it in your San Antonio itinerary if you want to see a fascinating stucco palace complete with period furniture and ghosts. The palace is rumored to be haunted, and it’s often included in San Antonio ghost tours. 

You won’t see any ghosts if you visit during the day, and you can focus on the impeccable colonial architecture and stunning antique furnishings. Beautiful artworks adorn the interior of the palace and its grounds, but I personally found the kitchen area the most interesting.  I’ve never seen anything like it before, especially in such good condition. 

Insider Tip: The Palace is situated between the San Fernando Cathedral and the Historic Market Square, so you can see three popular San Antonio attractions in one afternoon. 

Practical Information: The Spanish Governer’s Palace is open from 9 AM to 5 PM. Tickets are $5. 

18. Day Trip to Austin 

San Antonio is only an hour and a half from Austin. The bustling state capital is one of the best places to visit on day trips from San Antonio, both for the proximity and wonderful attractions it offers. Austin is known for its excellent cultural scene, great food, live music, and just a great atmosphere all around.

If you consider yourself an art lover, you’ll have the time of your life in Austin . The city is home to many wonderful museums and art exhibits, which range from a museum dedicated to Charles Umlauf’s works to a modern art installation named Cathedral of Junk. 

The Texas Capitol is an iconic building that you can’t miss while you’re in Austin. It is absolutely incredible to see and visitors can get free, 30-minute guided tours of the landmark complex. 

Practical Information: Austin is 80 miles northeast of San Antonio. It takes about an hour and a half to reach the city both by car and local bus. 

19. Learn About Texas at The Witte Museum

The Witte Museum is set in Brackenridge Park, and it’s one of the oldest museums in San Antonio, dedicated to recounting stories about Texas, from prehistoric times to the modern day. The museum’s collection includes a wide variety of historic artifacts, and some of the highlights are dinosaur bones and Sheriff’s badges from the late 1800s. 

The exhibit is fascinating, and I love that there’s something for everyone, regardless of their age. Kids are usually captivated by the giant replicas of dinosaurs, while adults have more fun discovering Texan art, textiles, and everyday objects from a previous era. 

This museum is outside central San Antonio, but it’s easily accessible by public transport. A bus can take you from the Alamo to the Witte Museum in just 20 minutes.

Practical Information: The Witte Museum is open from 10 AM to 6 PM. Tickets are $16 for adults. 

20. See The Historic San Fernando Cathedral 

San Fernando Cathedral is yet another in a string of historic landmarks to be found in Downtown San Antonio. The landmark church was initially constructed in the early 18th century and serves as a wonderful example of Spanish colonial architecture. 

The opulent altar and marvelous stained glass windows are the highlights of San Fernando Cathedral. Free guided tours are available to all visitors, although you won’t get to see the interior of the church. Instead, the tours take you around the cathedral grounds while the local guide recounts the church’s history. 

This church is often included in ghost tours of San Antonio. If you come here at night, you’ll get to see a spectacular light and music show, and you might even experience some paranormal events. 

Practical Information: San Fernando Cathedral is open from 9 AM to 5 PM and is accessible free of charge.

Best Time To Visit

The best time to visit San Antonio is from November to April. March and April are generally the most popular months for trips to this Texas city because of the mild, warm weather. It’s perfect for long walks around the city center and excursions to nearby parks and national landmarks.

Avoid traveling to the city in the summer if you can. San Antonio has very hot summers, and the temperatures often exceed 90 degrees throughout the day. That’s too hot to be comfortable when you’re outside most of the day, especially with the city’s high humidity. 

Getting There

Look for flights to San Antonio International Airport. It’s only a 15-minute drive from downtown San Antonio, so you’ll be at your hotel in no time. Buses also run from the airport to the city center; tickets are inexpensive at $2.5, and the ride is only 30-40 minutes long. It’s worth considering if you’re on a tighter budget and don’t want to spend money on taxis. 

Alternatively, you can fly to Austin and then get a ride to San Antonio. The airport in Austin is bigger and busier than the one in San Antonio, with more domestic and international connections. The capital is just an hour and a half from San Antonio by both car and bus. 

Getting Around

Much of central San Antonio is walkable, so you can explore a large portion of the city on foot. Cycling is popular here and an excellent alternative to taxi rides and car rentals. San Antonio has a good bike-sharing system, and you can visit most of the attractions listed in this guide on a bicycle. 

A rental car would help you get around San Antonio quicker, but it’s not a necessity. The public transport network in San Antonio is good and can even help you get all the way to Austin. So, consider renting a car only if you have very limited time in the city and you want to visit as many landmarks as possible. 

How Much Time Do You Need

Three days is the perfect amount of time for a San Antonio trip. It’s more than enough time to cover all the top landmarks in the city, as well as a day trip to a nearby city or national park. I recommend incorporating a day trip to Austin in your three-day itinerary because it’s very close to San Antonio. 

The city can be done in two days, but you’ll need to choose between a day trip or city attractions for the second day of the trip. And if you only have one day in San Antonio, prioritize all the historic places and buildings.

The Pearl district is also a lovely part of the city to stay in, with plenty of interesting attractions nearby. Here are some of the best hotels in San Antonio for all budgets:

San Antonio's centerpiece is the River Walk, where stone walkways and restaurants line the San Antonio River flowing through the city center. Set below street level, this is a beautiful area with calm waters, graceful bridges, birds, and plenty of shade from large trees towering over the banks.

Most people come down here for a stroll, or to enjoy a meal on one of the outdoor patios. One of the most relaxing ways to experience the River Walk is from the comfort of a barge on a guided tour or dinner cruise .

The barges that cruise the river can hold up to 40 passengers. For dinner cruises, the barge is set with a large table in the center and can accommodate up to 20 guests. These slow-moving boat tours are a wonderful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and a great opportunity to rest your legs after a day of sightseeing.

A great way to see the sites is with a combo San Antonio River Walk Cruise & Hop-on Hop-off Bus Tour , which also includes access to the Tower of the Americas.

The Alamo is one of the most important historical sites in the United States and a must-see attraction if you are visiting San Antonio. The Alamo was part of the mission station established here in 1718, its church built by Franciscans in 1744.

In 1836, the Battle of the Alamo , one of the most famous battles in US history, played out here, when a small force entrenched themselves in the Alamo against a Mexican army of 3,000. All the defenders were killed, including legendary figures Davy Crockett and James Bowie , in a battle that some estimate may have lasted only 20 minutes.

The Alamo soon became the cradle of Texan independence, and the phrase "Remember the Alamo!" became a battle cry. The former mission is now a National Monument and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In 2015, the San Antonio Missions were named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the first such designation in the state of Texas. The five missions, including the famous Alamo (Mission Valero) were built in the early 1700s, established by the Franciscan Order in an effort by Spain to colonize and evangelize the region.

Today, they are one of the city's greatest tourist attractions. If you have time to see only a few of the missions, be sure to see the Alamo , Mission San Jose , and Mission Concepción . The remaining two include Mission San Juan and Mission Espada. The Mission Trail connects the missions.

Most people drive between the missions, but if you want to combine a little outdoor activity with your sightseeing, consider biking between the missions. With a full day and the help of the city's bike share program, you can bike all the way from the Alamo in downtown to the other four missions on an eight-mile, one-way ride or a 16-mile return trip.

The Mission Hike and Bike Trail , which runs along the river and up to the missions, is both scenic and informative and a lovely way to spend a day.

Famous as the burial site of the heroes of the Alamo, the Roman Catholic San Fernando Cathedral (Church of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria y Guadalupe) is one of the oldest cathedrals in the US and is listed on the National register of Historic Places. Offered free of charge every Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evening, this video art installation , created by Xavier de Richemont, is a 24-minute video, with choreographed music and narration, projected onto the side of San Fernando Cathedral.

A 7,000-square-foot projection highlights the history and progression of San Antonio through an amazing display of colorful images and Surround Sound. If you are looking for something to do at night in San Antonio, this should be on your list.

Less than 30 minutes from San Antonio is Natural Bridge Caverns, the largest commercial caves in Texas. These spectacular caves are known for their huge open rooms but they also have narrow passages and interesting formations.

The Best Time to Visit Texas

With many historical attractions, natural landmarks, and big cities, Texas has a lot to offer visitors, from outdoor activities to indoor attractions. But when should you visit?

The best time to visit Texas is in early spring, between late March and April. Winter's chill is gone throughout much of the state, the wildflowers are in bloom, and summer's scorching temperatures haven't arrived yet.

The Weather in Texas

Texas is a big state and thus, weather conditions throughout the year can vary dramatically depending on location. In general, the state has a combination of three different climates: continental, mountain, and marine. Most areas have hot and humid summers and relatively mild winters.

The Eastern portion of Texas experiences a subtropical climate, with very warm summers and high humidity. The central portion of the state has dry summers, but equally arid (albeit cold) winters , and the remainder of the state is mostly a sub-tropical arid climate. Higher elevations, such as the Guadalupe Mountains in the west, experience cooler mountain climates.

Because of the dramatic variations throughout the state, temperatures can fluctuate wildly as well. It's not unusual for Amarillo, in the state's northern panhandle, to experience a snow shower while it's 70 degrees Fahrenheit in Dallas.

Hurricanes and Tornadoes in Texas

Houston and its nearby coast areas are subject to hurricanes from June through November. Tornadoes are a possibility throughout much of the state most of the year, however, they are most common from March through August. More than 100 tornadoes typically hit Texas during any given year.  

January is typically one of the coldest months in Texas, but it is still mild enough to spend time outdoors—without the heat and humidity. Avid anglers, golfers, runners, and other outdoors-lovers will enjoy the Lone Star State in the winter.

Events to check out:

• Texas starts years the way it ends them: with football. Taking over the NFL Cowboys' AT&T Stadium in Dallas each late December/early January, the Cotton Bowl has been hosting two of college football's best teams since 1937.
• The World's Longest Causeway Run and Wellness Walk stretches from Port Isabel to South Padre Island, a 10-kilometer run (and alternately, a 5-kilometer walk) across the Queen Isabella Causeway.
• The San Antonio Coffee Festival is an all-day celebration of all things java, and a great chance to explore the La Villita Historic Arts Village on downtown's River Walk.

February is usually the last month of winter in Texas—although freak spring ice storms have been known to happen. Like January, temperatures are usually still quite mild although some of the state's northern reaches will experience snow and ice.

• Held in February, the San Antonio Rodeo and Stock Show is one of the largest and longest running annual rodeo and stock show events in the nation. The event runs for two weeks.

March in Texas offers birding, flower trails, fishing, and, of course, spring break. This month is the peak of the state's bluebonnet bloom, which results in visitors flocking to the Texas Hill Country in hopes of spying fields loaded with the bright blue flowers.

• South By Southwest (SXSW) takes place in Austin in March. The popular music festival incorporates tech panels, film, and other media.
• Houston holds their stock show and rodeo in March. The event features the largest indoor livestock show and rodeo in the world.  

Spring in Texas is generally beautiful but can also usher in a potpourri of weather across the state. You can expect everything from hot temperatures, cold temperatures, rain, snow, and anything in between on any given day in April. Don't let that discourage you, though—in general, April is mild and pleasant.

• The tiny town of Poteet hosts its annual Strawberry Festival in April. The event draws more than 100,000 visitors.
• Houston holds its Bayou City Cajun Festival in April. The city's proximity to Louisiana means that it retains many Cajun cultural and culinary traditions—and this festival celebrates them all.

Temperatures typically warm up across the state in May for good. Dallas, for example, averages around 85 degrees Fahrenheit during this month.   Intense spring thunderstorms—some of which include hail and lightning—aren't uncommon.

• Head to the Texas Hill Country to celebrate the Kerrville Folk Festival , which has run continuously since 1972. The 18-day festival features over 100 songwriters, concerts, arts and crafts, concerts for kids, and more.
• Pasadena hosts its annual Strawberry Festival in May. This Texas favorite has strawberry eating and cooking contests, as well as barbeque, live music performances, and more.

June is typically warm and muggy across the state. This is the first full month that schools are out of session, so you can expect crowds of families at most of the state's most popular attractions.

• Held in Bowie, Texas, Jim Bowie Days hosts a rodeo, a fishing tournament, a car show, and more every June. The town is named for the legendary Texas figure.
• Dr. Pepper celebrates the soft drink with a June birthday celebration. The Dr. Pepper Birthday Celebration includes carnival games and food booths, as well as tours of the factory.

July is the first full month of summer—and it feels like it. This is usually the hottest month, but just about every outdoor activity imaginable is available to Texas visitors. There are plenty of great festivals and events during July, including several centered around the Fourth of July.

• If you want to celebrate one of Texas's flying pests, head to Clute for the Great Texas Mosquito Festival . This annual event features a cook-off, a washer pitching tournament, karaoke, and a mosquito-themed fun run.
• Virtually every Texas town celebrates the Fourth of July, but Luckenbach, one of the state's smallest towns, holds a great Independence Day celebration that includes a massive picnic.

August is still hot, hot, hot, but the thunderstorms that come along with early summer have usually died down. Most Texas kids head back to school during this month.

• The Texas International Fishing Tournament is the largest saltwater fishing tournament in Texas and is held each year in the waters around Port Isabel and South Padre Island. The tournament has bay, offshore, and fly fishing divisions and draws around 1,500 participants.
• Held in Wichita Falls, the Hotter'N Hell 100 attracts over 13,000 cyclists from across the country who then ride a grueling, 100-mile bike course in the August heat.

While the arrival of fall up north means some brisk days, September in Texas still mostly feels like summer, with plenty of warmth and sun. The seasonably mild weather comes along with food, music, nature, and, of course, football.

• Running from late September into October, the State Fair of Texas in Dallas is the state's largest fair and stock show. The month-long event features everything from art shows to carnival rides, and of course, plenty of fair food.

During early fall , the sometimes oppressive heat of summer is gone, making outdoor activities much more pleasant. Although fall finds the cooler weather in Texas, the temperature is still warm enough to allow almost any type of outdoor activity. Fishing, hunting, camping, birding, and even water sports activities are viable fall vacation options.

• The Texas Renaissance Festival kicks off at the end of September and runs through November. The festival features New Market Village, a recreation of an English town.
• Oktoberfest celebrates the state's rich German heritage during the first week of October. Held in downtown Fredericksburg, the event features German food, drink, and music.

The continuation of cooler fall weather in November makes sight-seeing a joy, which is perfect as tourists will experience the advantage of reduced traffic during the autumn season. Texas guests will love being able to move more freely and add more to their outdoor list.

• The Terlingua International Chili Cookoff is held the first weekend in November in tiny Terlingua, near Big Bend National Park. The event is considered one of the most prestigious chili cookoffs in the country. 

With the New Year coming up and the holiday season in full swing, Texas has plenty to celebrate in December. There are light trails and parades, college football bowl games, and unique fairs and festivals, all set against the state's generally mild winter weather.

• Held during the peak of the holiday season, the BMW Dallas Marathon spans a 26.2-mile course around the city's most scenic urban lake.
• Football-crazy Texas hosts multiple college bowl games and high school playoffs each December.

Spring is the best time to visit Texas, particularly from mid-March to mid-May. The weather is mild, the wildflowers are in bloom, and you can often find deals on hotels.

July and August are the hottest months in Texas, especially in the southern part of the state. On the Gulf Coast, the summer weather isn't just hot but it's muggy, too.

Spring sees the most rainstorms in Texas, but they are usually short and intense instead of long and drawn out.
