Tourist in the UAE? How to extend your visa while you're here
Visitors to dubai no longer have a 10-day grace period before they must begin to pay fines for overstaying.
An immigration official checks a passenger's documents at Dubai International Airport. Wam
Visitors to the UAE whose visas are about to expire can extend their stay by up to 60 days if necessary.
Anyone who does not go through the proper procedures and stays beyond the validity of their visit visa will be subject to fines of Dh50 ($13.61) a day.
Visitors who stay beyond the time allowed without renewing their visas can also be arrested for staying in the country illegally. Inspection campaigns are regularly carried out to catch offenders.
Here The National explains how to avoid these fines by applying for a visa extension.
No more 'grace period'
Visitors to Dubai will no longer be granted a 10-day grace period when their tourist visa expires, so travel agents, The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), and the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai (GDRFA) are urging visitors to apply for a 30-day extension visa before their original visa expires.
This extension can be applied for twice, resulting in an additional 60-day visit.
“People wishing to stay in the UAE after their visit visa expires should apply for a 30-day extension visa to stay legally in the country,” said an ICP call centre agent.
“They can apply for a second 30-day extension, maximum.”
The authority encouraged visitors to arrange the extension in advance of the current visa expiring, and warned of the upper limit for number of days spent in the country.
“People should be aware that the total duration of stay within a year should not exceed 120 days,” the agent said.
How much does it cost?
According to the ICP website, the cost of extending a visit visa is Dh610.
However, according to Amer, an immigration service centre, the cost for an extension of a visa issued by GDRFA-Dubai is Dh800.
Fees can vary between Dh800 and Dh1,100 when applying through a travel agency.
Where do I go to get the extension?
“The 30-day extension visa can be issued by the same travel agency that issued the visa for the customer in the first place," said Roshan Davis, manager of Golden Talent Tourism Agency in Dubai.
Visitors who obtained a visa on arrival can apply for an extension via the ICP or GDRFA-Dubai websites, or customer service centres.
Anyone with a visa on arrival can also take their passport to Dubai airport immigration in the Terminal 3 arrival area, Mr Davis added.
What are the required documents?
Holders of a visit visa should send a copy of their original visa and passport to the travel agent for extension. They can also visit the ICP or GDRFA-Dubai website to apply for an extension and the visa will be extended within 48 hours.
The passport should have a validity of at least six months to apply for an extension.
For how many days can validity be extended?
The service allows visit visa holders to extend their visa for up to 60 days, in two applications of 30-day extensions.
Who is the tourist visa for?
Those who do not qualify for a visa on arrival or visa-free entry to the UAE can apply for a tourist visa.
Citizens from 69 countries and states are eligible for a visa on arrival in the UAE . Females below the age of 18 are not eligible to apply for a tourist visa unless they are travelling with their parents.
How can I apply for a tourist visa?
Visitors from countries that do not have a visa-on-arrival arrangement with the UAE can apply for their visas in advance through a travel agency or through the airline.

How you can extend validity of UAE visit visa for 60 more days
Living in uae.
ICP’s new service can be completed online by the visa sponsor
Dubai: The UAE’s Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP) has launched a service that allows visit visa holders to extend the validity of their visas online.
Visit visas, which are a type of entry permit , are issued to foreign nationals, allowing them to enter the UAE for various reasons – whether for tourism, medical treatment or to study.
As per the ICP website, this new service allows for the extension of this visit visa. “The extension period depends on the type of entry permit issued in terms of duration and the number of times the extension request can be submitted,” the website stated.
What is visa validity?
According to Adnan Khan, operation manager at Siddique Haider Corporate Services Provider, the visa validity refers to the amount of time within which you can travel on a particular visa.
“After the visa is issued, you have 60 days to travel. After 60 days, the visa expires. Before the 60-day deadline, if you think you will not be able to travel on the visa, you can extend the validity of the visa through this service,” he told Gulf News.
“Sometimes people have their visas issued and they might not be able to leave the country, for whichever reason. They will just have to pay the fee to extend the visa validity, which would be better than having to apply for a new visa, which would cost them more,” he said.
If you think you will not be able to travel on the visa, you can extend the validity of the visa through this service. - Adnan Khan, operation manager at Siddique Haider Corporate Services Provider
For how many days can the validity be extended?

Extend Your UAE Visit Visa: New Rules and Costs Explained
If you have a visa to visit someone in the UAE, you can now extend it for 30 days, regardless of whether your original visa was for 30, 60, or 90 days. This decision was made by the UAE Cabinet and has been in effect for a few weeks.
Documents Required for the extension of UAE Visit Visa:
To extend your visa, you need to use the “UAEICP” smart application and provide
- your original entry permit
- a recent photo.
Your passport must also have at least six months of validity left.
Cost of extending UAE Visit Visa
The fee for extending a visit visa for 30 days is Dh750, which includes various charges like issuance fee, application fee, smart services fee, and an insurance and authority fee.
To be eligible for this service, you should be a relative or friend of someone living in the UAE, and you need to provide proof of your relationship and reasons for your visit.
If you make any mistakes or miss documents in your application, it may be rejected electronically after 30 days. You can get a refund of the fees you paid if your application is rejected, and this can be done through credit card, check, or bank transfer.
The UAE government is making it easier for residents to apply for visit visas for their relatives or friends through a user-friendly online application to improve customer service and meet the needs of various residents and foreigners in the country.
If you’re a tourist in the UAE and want to stay longer, you can extend your tourist visa , but you can only do it once for 30 days. This rule was decided by the UAE government.
How to Extend your UAE Visit Visa ?
To extend your UAE visit visa, here’s what you need to do:
- If a tourist agency initially issued your visa, you should contact them to request an extension.
- Keep in mind that when you apply for an extension, it will only be granted once, and it will be for a one-month period, as per the latest information from the ICP.
- You can only extend your visa through the agency that initially applied for it. So, if a travel agency arranged your visa, you’ll need to go back to them for the extension.
- If you want to stay longer than that, you’ll have to leave the country and then apply for a new tourist visa to re-enter. Some travel agencies offer a service to help you do this, but it depends on the approval of your new visa application.
- Always stay within the timeframe of your visa to avoid legal problems due to overstaying.

Visit Visa Extension Dubai
In late 2023, the UAE authorities introduced several significant updates to the visa mechanism, with changes covering such aspects of it as family sponsorship, visa validity duration, entry and exit rules, visa extension, and more. As such, if you are planning to visit and spend time in Dubai in 2024, you are highly recommended to get familiar with the implemented changes, as they provide not only new options for extending your visa but also new regulations associated with them. In this guide, we will explore the new Dubai visit visa extension rules to provide you with all the information you may need.
Updates to Visit Visa Extension Rules in 2024
Globally known for its unique tourist attractions, skyscraper skyline, man-made islands, and luxury waterfront lifestyle, Dubai has recently revised its visa extension policies to simplify the process for tourists. From 2024, travelers coming to the city on a visit visa will have the option to extend their stay, allowing them to take full advantage of Dubai’s numerous offered opportunities for an extended time without the fear of getting in trouble with the authorities. Here are the key changes with regard to the visit visa extension.
- Under the new rules, the validity period of a UAE visit visa can currently be prolonged for an extra 30 days, with the option to do so twice every 30 days. As such, visitors can now extend their stay in Dubai for up to 4 months (120 days) within a calendar year. On the one hand, this is the largest possible duration you can extend a visit visa to, on the other hand, it allows for quite a considerable amount of time added to achieve your visit goals.
- The UAE continues to increase the country’s attractiveness to foreign visitors, and a big part of this effort is the strive for the digitization of public services, including those related to visa governance. The new online visa management system created under this effort provides a great tool for all operations involving visas. Using a personal online account, you can manage your visas and entry permits from wherever you are.
- At the same time, not all the recent changes are aimed at tourist convenience. For example, under the newly introduced regulations, a tourist visa can only extended after exiting the country. This mandates visa holders to leave UAE’s territory for at least a day in order to be eligible for visa renewal. Fortunately, this process can be simplified by using airport-to-airport (A2A) services. Additionally, holders of a visit visa with a 90-day validity period can also extend it for another 90 days.
Guide to Extending Your Dubai Visit Visa
Although the online and offline procedures of Dubai visa extension differ in some aspects, they also involve several common steps that are necessary for achieving success.
1. Ensuring Eligibility
This step is vital because none of the following ones are relevant if you’re not eligible for a visa extension in the first place. The key eligibility factors to check for are:
- Having a passport with a minimum 6-month validity period after the expiry of your first visa extension
- Holding citizenship of one of the countries eligible for visa extension
- Having a return ticket purchased in advance
- Having the financial capacity sufficient to stay in the Emirates for an extended period
2. Preparing the Required Paperwork
Once you’ve confirmed that you’re eligible for extending your visit visa, the next step is to prepare and gather all the documents necessary for the extension process.
- Valid passport
- Copy of the biodata and UAE visa pages of your passport
- Recently made passport-size photo
- Copy of your purchased entry and return tickets
- Confirmation of adequate funds (bank statement, sponsor letter, etc.)
- Filled-out application form (for offline procedure)
Online Visa Extension Method and Procedures
If you’ve completed the first two steps and choose to extend your visit visa online, the next steps are as follows:
- Visit the online platform of Dubai’s General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) and log in.
- Find the “Visa Extension” section.
- Select the option matching your goals and travel documents.
- Retrieve your visa data by entering your passport details.
- Enter all the information required in the application form.
- Upload and attach the necessary documents to the application.
- Pay the service fees online using your bank card (visa extension fee and additional fees, if applicable).
- Submit the application.
- Wait for the application to be processed. The estimated time is 2-5 workdays.
- Get your extended visa from the designated place, such as a visa service center.
Offline Visa Extension Method and Procedures
In the case of choosing to extend your visa offline, the next steps are as follows:
- Find the nearest GDRFA office (or the most preferable in terms of convenience) and visit it with all the documents you’ve prepared beforehand.
- Submit the completed application form along with the said documents.
- Follow any other instructions provided by the GDRFA employees.
- Pay the relevant service fees.
- Get your extended visa from the designated place specified by the GDRFA employees.
By using this guide, you should have no problems extending your visa and your visit to Dubai, as long as you meet the eligibility criteria and have all the necessary papers in order.
Visa Expiry Fines and Penalties
Recently, the UAE immigration authorities have discarded the 10-day grace period option for extended visitor visas. The overstaying fine is AED 50 per day, and you will also have to pay an additional AED 250-350 upon exiting the country. On top of that, as failing to comply with the visa regulations is against the law, you may face legal consequences, such as:
- Being marked in the UAE visa system. This may affect both your future visits to the UAE and to other countries, as the relevant authorities may deem you unreliable and be reluctant to grant you entry or residency permits.
- Being blacklisted. If you overstay your visit to a certain degree, you can get banned from entering the Emirates ever again.
- Being deported. In a really bad overstaying case, you can get sent back to your home country. Both this and the previous cases can heavily impact your ability to obtain visas to other countries and drastically limit your traveling options.
In order to prevent the said consequences and to avoid overstaying, adhere to the following guidelines:
- Take precautions such as learning the exact day of your visa expiry.
- Keep track of the days you have left under your visit visa.
- Make sure you have enough time on your hands to complete the planned activities and prepare for your leave.
- Be cautious not to schedule any trips or vacations for the last couple of days of your stay.
Remember that each day of overstaying will not only cost you more money but also increase the possibility of more severe legal consequences. As such, if you happen to fail to leave the UAE in due time, you should act upon it promptly and take the necessary actions.
This guide should help you stay informed about the latest changes in the UAE’s visa extension rules and take the appropriate steps to comply with the current regulations when planning your stay in Dubai. If you plan on extending your visit visa, research your eligibility for this option, prepare the documents as mandated by the authorities, and remember not to overstay your welcome in order to avoid legal and financial consequences.

Renewing your residence visa
Your sponsor must renew your residence visa before it expires. A renewed visa will let you continue living legally in the UAE without incurring fines or facing legal consequences for the same. UAE residents are granted longer flexible grace periods that reach up to 6 months (according to resident cateogry) to stay in the country after the residence permit is cancelled or expired.
The ICP has standardised the overstaying fines in the UAE. According to the new rules, visit, tourist and residence visa overstaying fees have standardised at AED 50 per day. Those overstaying on a residency visa will have to pay AED 50 each day (AED 50 per day instead of AED 25).
Remember that when the visa expires, your Emirates ID card issued by the ICP also expires.
If there is a need to renew your residence visa a few months earlier (one to six months) for travelling reasons, you must first take special permission and approval from ICP.

High school students are eligible for a Golden Visa of 5 years, if:
- The student is a national-level topper (with a minimum grade of 95 per cent in public or private secondary school)
- A recommendation letter from Ministry of Education (Emirates Schools Establishment) is submitted.
The Golden Visa is for a duration of 5 years, but may be extended if the student is enrolled in one of the majors or colleges in the country that requires a study period of more than 5 years.
How do I know if my university is rated A or B?
To know the university's classification, the applicant can access the university website, or contact their admin department.
Speaking to Khaleej Times, a Technical Support Specialist at Amer247 messaging platform said:
However, for applications through Amer, the classification is "specifically contingent upon the governing authority under which the educational institution" is based.
This classification can significantly influence the documents required.
The support specialist added: "Notably, for outstanding university students under KHDA, the school must liaise with KHDA for certificate attestation, followed by MOFA attestation, and the issuance of an equivalency certificate to conform with the mandatory Ministerial grading system, typically graded out of 4 or 5."
How do I apply?
Students can expect a faster process if they first receive ICP nomination approval and then visit an Amer centre. According to the Amer agent, the application process can indeed be "expedited and made more efficient" if the student obtains a UAE ICP nomination approval prior to visiting Amer, or utilises the GDRFA platform.
The agent said that the GPA threshold is set at 3.8 to "facilitate a seamless application process." However, certain universities in the UAE are categorized by ICP as exempt from the 3.8 benchmark.
Graduates from these universities can apply for the Golden visa with a GPA of 3.5 if they secure a nomination from ICP, he added.
