If you’re looking at a map of the entire United States, Tennessee is easily one of the most recognizable states. Shaped like an irregular parallelogram, it’s nearly four times long as it is wide — measuring around 420 miles from east to west and 120 miles from north to south. What the two-dimensional view doesn’t tell you, however, is that its borders contain a seemingly endless number of variations in both scenery and culture. “Tennessee is a perfect mix of urban and rural, casual yet sophisticated with easy proximity to the great outdoors,” explains Cassidee Dabney, executive chef of The Barn at Blackberry Farm . “Throw in brilliant musical and cultural heritage, fantastic high and low culinary destinations, and rich and diverse geography, and you have a state that will keep you entertained and engaged.”

Its largest cities — Nashville , Memphis, Knoxville, and Chattanooga — are on many travelers’ radars, but a true understanding of Tennessee can only be discovered through a more nuanced itinerary. “I think visitors here should get off the interstate to explore and go through small towns. Otherwise, you miss the local places that give this state so much great color and character,” says Tandy Wilson, chef and owner of City House , Nashville.

There’s no doubt Music City, suggested by several of our experts, tops the list. As you plan your trip, be sure to keep in mind some of Wilson’s favorite places to eat. He recommends the mac and cheese at Silver Sands Cafe — “I want real Southern mac and cheese, and this is the only place I know to get it” — the giant prawns and fried squid at Red Perch , and the nachos and wings at Martin's Bar-B-Que Joint .

While Nashville has plenty to offer, there’s one part of the city you absolutely can’t miss: Broadway. “First-timers have to go honky-tonking on Broadway. Hit up Robert’s Western World for cold beers, fried bologna sandwiches, and country music,” says Dabney. David Mishkin, executive property manager at Southall Farm & Inn , also shares this is a crucial addition to your Nashville visit: “There's so much to see, eat, and experience. Country music is everywhere, and the performances are all high quality. It's difficult to not enjoy yourself when being immersed in the energy and action.”

“When I think about Memphis, I think about music, art, and beautiful historical architecture,” says Stephanie King , an artist based in the state’s southwesternmost city. This creative side of Memphis can be found in many areas, but King shares that The Memphian Hotel is a good place to start. “To me, The Memphian embodies so many aspects of Memphis in the most inspired, welcoming way. It feels as if the intention when designing the environment was to create pure magic. There is local art lining the walls, layers of colors and texture, whimsy and sophistication all rolled into a comfortable, home-like atmosphere,” she says.

The storied home of Elvis Presley, Graceland is located 12 minutes from downtown Memphis. A destination in and of itself, the historic property includes the King of Rock and Roll’s mansion, gardens, cars, and The Guest House at Graceland, where music fans can stay overnight to experience the resort’s dedication to luxury and Southern hospitality.

Make your way to Eastern Tennessee to cheer on the Vols in Knoxville. Or, if you’re not a sports fan, spend your day exploring the city. “Downtown Knoxville is a great area to park and walk around Market Square and the Old City. There’s a great farmers’ market on Saturdays in the warmer months that’s a must-visit,” says Dabney. Her ideal visit to the Cradle of Country Music includes stops at Cruze Farm , J.C Holdway , Yassin’s Falafel , and a spirit tasting at PostModern Spirits Distillery .

Leiper’s Fork

You’ll need to drive 45 minutes southwest of Nashville to find Leiper’s Fork, one of the most charming small towns in Tennessee . According to Mishkin, it’s a “charming place to grab some barbecue, do some antique shopping, and enjoy a delicious drink at the distillery.” Like many places in the state, it has a relationship with music. If that’s up your alley, check out Fox & Locke , which Miskin says is a “well-known place for people to come together for food, drinks, and live music.”

Chattanooga

Of all the river cities in the South, Chattanooga is one of the best. “You have to visit Rock City and Ruby Falls if you’re in the area, and the art museum is great,” says Dabney, referring to the Hunter Museum of American Art in the Bluff View Art District. In between outdoor activities and cultural sights, you’ll want to fill up with fried chicken and tamales at Champy’s and wash them down with cocktails at The Rosecomb .

South Cumberland State Park

With 56 state parks, Tennessee is the perfect destination for those who find peace and happiness among the trees and fresh air. South Cumberland State Park is about an hour from Chattanooga, and it’s where you’ll find the Fiery Gizzard Trail. “It’s near Beersheba Springs and Old Stone Fort outside of McMinnville, and it’s just full of natural beauty. To tackle this hike, you need to be able to walk a few miles, but it’s one we take the kids on,” says Wilson.

“Ocoee River Area is my favorite area in Tennessee,” says King. “You can whitewater raft, kayak, hike, camp, [and] bike.” Flowing northwestward through the Appalachian Mountains, the river can be easily accessed from Chattanooga. Many people choose to take advantage of the rafting, but the area can also be explored by driving the Ocoee Scenic Byway .

Walland might ring a bell because of its association with Blackberry Farm and Blackberry Mountain . “You can hit Blackberry Farm for a high-end luxury experience with trails, mountain biking, a James Beard award-winning restaurant, spa, farm animals, workshops, and concerts,” says King. Dabney also shares her suggestions for the Mountain, saying, “You can’t go wrong with a guided hike to Leo The Enlightened (a large sculpture from Danish artist Thomas Dambo that overlooks the valley), sound bathing, spending an afternoon behind the wheel of a Lexus tacking the Off Road Adventure, and throwing clay at the art studio.”

Fall Creek Falls State Park

“ Fall Creek Falls State Park is another unbelievable spot for camping, biking, and hiking,” says King. Covering 30,638 acres, it’s one of the largest state parks in Tennessee. Along with its size, it has a few other features that set it apart, including interesting geological formations (caves and gorges) and scenic waterfalls.

It’s easy to overlook Franklin in favor of its neighbor to the north, Nashville, but travelers would be remiss to not spend at least an afternoon in this historic community. “Nothing beats walking down this picture-perfect Main Street on a beautiful day. With curated shops and friendly faces everywhere, we often spend our days wandering through town with the family,” says Mishkin. For a longer trip, stay overnight at the gorgeous Southall Farm & Inn , which opened in late 2022.

Cummins Falls State Park

“ Cummins Falls is a great waterfall to visit, and it’s a great short hike in the summer,” says Wilson. Just make sure to bring your swimsuit along with your hiking clothes to the 306-acre park. “It’s just gorgeous here – it’s more socially recreational and a lot of fun and a cool place to swim.”

A small city close to Knoxville, Maryville is an excellent choice if you love all things outdoors. “Book a room at RT Lodge , a charming lodge tucked away behind Maryville College. You'll feel secluded while in the center of town, and they have a great restaurant and a gorgeous bar called The Morningside,” says Dabney. “With RT as your base camp, take a quick drive to the Great Smoky Mountains.”

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

One of the most-visited national parks in the United States, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is notable for its lush forests, wildflowers, rivers, streams, waterfalls, and incredible hikes. “My favorite hike in the Smokies is Indian Flat Falls . It's about 6 miles and pretty moderate with scenic waterfalls, plus you can turn around at any point,” says Dabney.

Gatlinburg maintains the title of “gateway to Great Smoky Mountains National Park,” so there’s a good chance your hiking trip will start here. There are three park entrances right in town, and Mishkin says the “immersion within nature is worthy of the trip.” “The history contained within remnants around the parks also shows how people lived hundreds of years ago,” he adds.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

With more than 522,000 acres of forest, mountains, waterfalls and wildlife stretching across Tennessee and North Carolina, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited national park in the U.S. The park boasts 850 miles of backcountry trails and features about 70 miles of the Appalachian Trail: Top hikes include the 5.4-mile round trip to Rainbow Falls and a steep climb up to the summit of Chimney Tops for sweeping mountain views. Also not to be missed is Clingmans Dome, the highest point in the park – and in Tennessee – at more than 6,600 feet in elevation. Note that the road to the tower is closed during the winter months.

A stop at the three-story building begins with exploring the museum gallery's permanent and rotating exhibits, which highlight the genre from its early beginnings to country music's biggest celebrities. In May, the park will debut Big Bear Mountain − its longest roller coaster at almost 4,000 feet, themed around the region's black bears. Dollywood's Splash Country, the water park, features mountain views, a 1,500-foot lazy river and exciting waterslides.

Chattanooga

Tennessee Aquarium

Take a journey from the mountains to the sea at the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga. In one building, explore the mountains and rivers of east Tennessee in River Journey, then travel to the sea in Ocean Journey (a building all its own). With more than 10,000 animals here, you can expect to see river otters, lemurs, penguins, sharks, colorful fish and octopuses. In the "River Giants" exhibit, there are freshwater fish from around the world that grow to monstrous proportions. What's more, the "Turtle of the World" gallery has the most extensive collection of turtles of any accredited zoo or aquarium in the U.S.

For a real treat, book the guided "Deeper Dives" tour, which takes you behind the scenes before the aquarium opens. You'll also want to catch an immersive show at the IMAX Theater. The U.S. Civil Rights Trail in Tennessee

The U.S. Civil Rights Trail covers 15 states and more than 100 locations that were significant to the civil rights movement – and you'll find more than a dozen of these locales in Tennessee. In Memphis, visit a handful of sites including the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel as well as Clayborn Temple next to I AM A MAN Plaza, where sanitation workers protested in 1968. Then, travel a little more than 200 miles northeast to visit Nashville's seven stops, ranging from the Civil Rights Room at the Nashville Public Library to the National Museum of African American Music .

Complete your journey across the state in Clinton, about 175 miles east of Nashville, to learn about the Clinton 12 at the Green McAdoo Cultural Center. After the Supreme Court's Brown v. Board of Education ruling, these 12 Black students stepped inside an all-white public high school in August 1956, making it the first integrated school in the South. Visitors to the cultural center say it's very well done and expressed that their visit was a moving experience.

Titanic Museum Attraction

Owned and curated by the man who co-led the diving expedition to the Titanic in 1987, this impressive museum in Pigeon Forge brings the history of the legendary ship to life. The top-rated Titanic Museum Attraction houses artifacts from the Titanic Historical Society, maintaining more than 400 relics and memorabilia from the ship.

The exterior of the building is about half-scale of the actual ship size, but the interior re-created rooms are true to life. Inside, you'll find an exact replica of the Grand Staircase as well as galleries filled with information about the ship and stories from survivors. There's even a Memorial Room dedicated to the more than 2,200 passengers and crew members. Travelers suggest spending at least two hours here to hear the emotional stories of the survivors and better understand what happened that fateful evening in April 1912.

Lookout Mountain

Situated just minutes from downtown Chattanooga, Lookout Mountain's attractions focus on the immediate area's natural beauty. Located deep within the mountain, Ruby Falls has the tallest and deepest underground waterfall in the U.S. Explore the cave and the falls on a tour, after which you can brave the climbing tower or a zip line adventure. The Lookout Mountain Incline Railway will also get your adrenaline pumping as the more than 125-year-old funicular railway climbs Lookout Mountain. After a mile-long ride, hop off at the top of the mountain to take in the views of the Tennessee Valley from the overlook at the observation deck.

Just over the state line, Rock City Gardens, one of the top things to do in Georgia , boasts panoramic views and other attractions atop Lookout Mountain. "Rock City Gardens is especially fun at Christmastime, when it hosts the Enchanted Garden of Lights," Norcross says. "The Fairyland Caverns display feels almost otherworldly!" Other travelers say Lookout Mountain is worth a visit and the vantage point from the mountaintop is incredible.

Tennessee Whiskey Trail

Since pre-Civil War times, Tennessee has long been known for its whiskey. Today, there are more than 30 distilleries and 800-plus miles of scenic landscapes to cover on the statewide Tennessee Whiskey Trail. In fact, the trail's official website estimates you'll need 14 days to visit all the spots, and you can register for an analog or digital whiskey passport to collect stamps. The complete itinerary includes stops in and around Nashville, Knoxville, the Smoky Mountains, Chattanooga and Memphis. Be sure not to miss the Lynchburg and Tullahoma area, home to the historic George Dickel and Jack Daniel's distilleries.

In between stops, check out Civil War battlegrounds, live music venues, local food favorites and hidden gems in smaller towns, as well as state parks with outdoor adventures. For accommodations in Memphis, consider staying at the outdoor-themed, pyramid-shaped Big Cypress Lodge , which affords views of the Mississippi River. The historic Hermitage Hotel is a top choice in Nashville, while in the Knoxville area The Oliver Hotel is a traveler favorite due to its close proximity to Market Square.

The Parthenon

Located in Centennial Park in Nashville's West End, the Parthenon is the only exact replica in the world of the ancient temple in Athens, Greece . Regarded as the park's centerpiece, the Parthenon was constructed as a temporary structure in 1897 to celebrate 100 years of Tennessee statehood. In 1920, after Nashville had been known for years as the "Athens of the South," the Parthenon was rebuilt with the help of a local architect and an architectural historian.

Since the 1930s, the Parthenon has hosted rotating art exhibits in its galleries; today, as Nashville's art museum, it continues to feature temporary exhibitions and shows. The museum's permanent collections include paintings by 19th- and 20th-century American artists as well as 14 casts of the Parthenon Marbles. You'll also find an impressive replica of the Athena Parthenos statue from ancient Greece. The Parthenon and this statue are a must-see, according to traveler reviews.

World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest

The World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest is one of the beloved events that takes place during the Memphis in May International Festival. The contest dates back to 1978, when it began in a parking lot with just 20 teams. In 2022, the four-day event brought more than 200 competition cooking teams from 24 states and four foreign countries to compete. So, if you're craving all things pork and want to see unique themed team tents and live entertainment while having a bit of over-the-top fun, head to Tom Lee Park along the banks of the Mississippi River in May. In 2023, the festival will run from May 17 to 20.

June is also a busy month in Tennessee, with the four-day CMA Fest as one of the top events in the state. The annual Nashville event began as Fan Fair with 5,000 people in attendance; tens of thousands of attendees now come from all over to see more than 260 performers. The fan-favorite event is celebrating 50 years in 2023, and attendees can see award-winning and chart-topping artists like Carly Pearce, Lainey Wilson, Keith Urban, Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan and Tim McGraw – as well as emerging country artists. The event takes place in downtown Nashville and features six daytime and two nighttime stages, including larger venues like Nissan Stadium alongside indoor venues at Music City Center. You also won't want to miss the neon lights of the honky-tonks and festivities along Nashville's famous entertainment district on Broadway Street.

"Travelers should expect a party atmosphere if they choose to visit Nashville during CMA Fest," says Marisa Méndez , a senior travel editor at U.S. News and CMA Fest attendee. "You'll encounter massive crowds of music fans (with expensive hotel rates to boot) and the tradeoff is a slew of excellent concerts. If you aren't a diehard country music fan or you dislike massive crowds (like me!) then choose another time to visit."

Natchez Trace Parkway

Set off from Nashville on a scenic journey along this 444-mile recreational road. Meandering through three states, this national parkway roughly follows the "Old Natchez Trace," a historic route once used by Indigenous people, European settlers, soldiers and more. Along the way, travelers can experience camping, biking, hiking and horseback riding while soaking in all the natural beauty. There are a variety of short trails along the parkway to explore waterfalls, natural wonders and historic landmarks.

The Lost Sea

Travel 140 feet below ground to see the largest underground lake in America. The aptly named Lost Sea sits about 50 miles southwest of Knoxville in Sweetwater. The 75-minute guided tour begins with a short walk that past travelers say can be challenging, so wear comfortable nonslip shoes. As the guides explain the history of the cavern, you'll learn how geological factors created the rare formations and cavern rooms. At the end of the tour, hop on a boat ride to see the clear waters of this 70-foot-deep lake spread across more than 13 acres of water. Visitors comment that walking through the cave is a great experience, but seeing the lake is what's truly worth the price of admission.

A stop in Sweetwater could be a daytrip from Knoxville, but you can also linger longer by renting a cabin or cottage. Sweetwater's historic district has unique shops and boutiques to peruse, and don't miss a visit to Sweetwater Valley Farm's cafe to enjoy farm-fresh dairy specialties.

Located around 20 miles south of downtown Nashville, Franklin is a must-visit for history buffs, shoppers and music lovers alike. The Battle of Franklin – one of the Civil War's bloodiest battles – occurred here, and visitors can learn all about it with a trip to the well-preserved Civil War sites of Carnton, Carter House and the Lotz House. The 16-block historic downtown is an idyllic destination for shopping, dining, intimate songwriter rounds, art and special events. For a classic Southern meal, grab a bite to eat at Puckett's Restaurant with its laid-back atmosphere and live music.

Consider an overnight stay at The Harpeth, where travelers say the staff and accommodations are exceptional; many also praise the on-site bar and restaurant. Vinophiles may want to venture to some of middle Tennessee's vineyards, including the award-winning Arrington Vineyards. You can sample the wines, have an outdoor picnic and catch live music on weekends in the warmer months.

The Memphis Zoo

Located in Memphis' Overton Park, the Memphis Zoo has been a major attraction since 1906. The zoo's property covers nearly 80 acres and is home to more than 500 species of animals that reside in various zones and exhibits. In Cat Country, you can view elusive snow leopards, African lions and near-threated jaguars. The China exhibition encompasses 3 acres and features Asian wildlife including Francois langurs and Sulawesi crested macaques.

The Hermitage

Located about 10 miles northeast of Nashville, The Hermitage – not to be confused with Nashville's Hermitage Hotel – is a 1,120-acre property and mansion that President Andrew Jackson and his wife, Rachel, once called home. Jackson lived at The Hermitage from 1804 – when he purchased the property as a 425-acre plantation, relying on the labor of enslaved Black people – until his death in 1845. Over the years, the mansion has undergone extensive renovations and additions.

Today, the house features most of Jackson's personal artifacts. Several tour options of the mansion and its grounds are available, including two different tours that teach visitors about the lives of the enslaved men, women and children who worked on this plantation and generated Jackson's wealth. Travelers say the tours are a very informative and educational experience; they also appreciate how much history is preserved at the property. Don't miss the exhibits at the visitor center, and before leaving be sure to sample wines from the Natchez Hills Vineyard and Winery tasting room at The Hermitage.

Surrounded by the Great Smoky Mountains, Gatlinburg is the perfect base for outdoor adventure. The Sugarlands entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park is just outside of downtown, but there's many exciting things to do while in this part of east Tennessee. Ober Gatlinburg Amusement Park and Ski Area offers year-round family fun with amusement rides, an aerial tramway, ice skating, snow tubing, skiing and other activities. Many patrons enjoy this attraction, though they warn it can get overcrowded, so aim for weekdays and other off-peak times.

During your jaunt in Gatlinburg you can also visit Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies, walk a 680-foot-long suspension bridge at Skylift Park, and zip to the top of Anakeesta theme park on the Chondola. Native Americans have inhabited the land of Tennessee for about 12,000 years. Many places in the state, such as Chattanooga and Tullahoma, have names of Indigenous origin – even "Tennessee" itself derives from a Cherokee word for "where the river bends." Today, you can explore Native American heritage across the state.

Plan to begin your journey in the town of Vonore at the Sequoyah Birthplace Museum. Located around 35 miles southwest of Knoxville, this museum is owned and operated by the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation and pays tribute to Sequoyah, who is best remembered for creating the Cherokee writing system. Also on-site is the Cherokee Memorial, where archaeological remains from former Cherokee towns of the 18th century are buried. Afterward, plan to visit The Tanasi Memorial, where Tennessee's namesake – a former Cherokee village – is commemorated 12 miles southeast of the museum.

Part of the more than 5,000-mile Trail of Tears National Historic Trail, which spans nine states, runs through Tennessee. In the 1830s, the U.S. government forced Native American tribes across the Southeast to relocate from their ancestral homelands to west of the Mississippi River; the ensuing journey became known as the Trail of Tears. Throughout Tennessee, you'll find more than a dozen places to visit to learn more about the horrific trek, including the Cherokee Removal Memorial Park in Birchwood. Visitors to this site, located in the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge, comment that it's a beautiful and much-needed memorial to Native Americans.

Home to the TV series "The Caverns Sessions" (formerly "Bluegrass Underground"), The Caverns is an otherworldly cave system that boasts more than 8,000 linear feet of passageways in Pelham, around 60 miles northwest of Chattanooga. During the day, take a guided tour of the caves for a behind-the-scenes look at the underground concert venue as well as one of the world's largest underground rooms. Adrenaline-seekers can book the Adventure Cave Tour, a true spelunking trip where few have gone before.

At night, listen to top music acts in Big Mouth Cave. The concert hall serves food and brews and is also accessible for music fans with mobility issues. Known as the "Secret City," Oak Ridge quickly developed on a tract of rural farmland purchased by the government during World War II. More than 100,000 people of various professions were brought to this city to work on the top-secret Manhattan Project, unaware the devastating atomic bomb they were producing would end WWII.

While in town, plan to explore this significant part of U.S. history at the Oak Ridge History Museum and the K-25 History Center, which travelers appreciate for being well done and informative. Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival

The first Bonnaroo festival took place in 2002, with its name inspired by a Dr. John album; the Creole slang word "bonnaroo" translates roughly to "best on the street." The annual music, arts and camping event convenes with as many as 80,000 festivalgoers on the 650-acre Bonnaroo Farm in Manchester, about 65 southeast of Nashville.

The four-day Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival typically occurs in mid-June: In 2023, it runs from June 14 to 18. This event features more than 150 musicians performing on 10 stages; four camping barns; and nonstop entertainment, food and parties. Expect to see and hear everything from rock to hip-hop to jazz. Past performers have included Bob Dylan, Jay-Z, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen, Eminem, Radiohead and U2.

Fall Creek Falls State Park

Located around 70 miles north of Chattanooga in Spencer, Fall Creek Falls State Park is one of the largest and most visited state parks in Tennessee, with nearly 30,000 acres spanning the top of the Cumberland Plateau. The park's rugged terrain boasts gorges, streams, lush hardwood forests and waterfalls such as the 256-foot-high Fall Creek Falls. There are more than 50 miles of hiking trails, including two overnight, long-distance routes.

The Nature Center at Fall Creek Falls hosts naturalist-led programs with activities like campfires, games, live music, movies and more. Visitors say the park is beautiful and the walk to see the falls from the overlook is short and pleasant, while the hike to the base of the waterfall can be challenging. Plan to stay a few days in one of the 30 cabins or camp outdoors under the stars at your choice of more than 200 campsites. For less rustic accommodations, reserve one of the guest rooms at the Lodge at Fall Creek Falls.

Historic Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary

Historic Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary, situated about 40 miles northwest of Knoxville in Petros, was Tennessee's first maximum-security prison, known as the "End of the Line." The facility offers self-guided tours that cover 30 stations and stories throughout the prison. Guests can visit most parts of the prison, including the cell block, cafeteria, laundry room, exercise yard and the "HOLE," where inmates were sent for solitary confinement in complete darkness.

Former inmates and prison guards are stationed throughout the prison to share stories of life in Brushy and give guided tours, which you must book in advance. The more adventurous explorers may enjoy an overnight paranormal tour. Most travelers find the guide-led tours interesting and educational. Sample the End of the Line moonshine at the on-site distillery or dine at the Southern-inspired Warden's Table restaurant. Note that this site closes for the winter.

Discovery Park of America

Discovery Park of America will entertain family members of all ages. You'll want at least one full day to visit this 100,000-square-foot museum and the surrounding 50-acre heritage park in Union City, about 115 miles northwest of Memphis. Indoor exhibits include 10 galleries and interactive displays highlighting everything from technology and space to art and regional history. Discovery Park also offers a 20,000-gallon aquarium, a theater and the tallest observation tower in the area.

Go outside to visit a replica 19th-century frontier settlement or see a gristmill in action in a re-created early-1900s town. You can also wander through Japanese and European gardens and explore a train station. The park even has a river, waterfalls and a playground inspired by nature. Visitors say the museum is worth a visit and that it's both educational and great fun. If you have time, visit Union City's historic downtown area or check out nearby Lake Isom National Wildlife Refuge and Reelfoot Lake State Park in Tiptonville. For an overnight stay, reserve accommodations at a hotel in Union City or set up camp near Reelfoot Lake.

Museum of Appalachia

The 65-acre Museum of Appalachia in Clinton is a living history museum that makes for a perfect daytrip from Knoxville, since it's about 25 miles northwest. This authentic mountain farm and pioneer village, a Smithsonian Affiliate, features 35 log cabins, barns, churches and schools; its more than 250,000 artifacts compose collections of folk art, musical instruments and more. You can also stroll through several gardens and see free-range farm animals. Be sure to check out the indoor exhibits, including the Hall of Fame building, which honors interesting individuals with a connection to the Southern Appalachians.

Tourgoers are impressed with the informative exhibits and myriad artifacts, saying they come away with an appreciation for the history and lives of the Southern Appalachian people and their culture. Plan to spend a few hours at the museum. After your tour, take a walk by the Clinch River, visit Clinton's antiques district and then head over to Hoskins Drug Store, where you'll find an old-fashioned lunch counter and soda fountain.

Belle Meade Historic Site & Winery

This historic Greek Revival mansion and surrounding 5,400 acres highlight Tennessee's history, architecture and equestrian heritage. A variety of tour options awaits you at Belle Meade Historic Site & Winery, about 10 miles southwest of Nashville. Guests say the entire estate is beautiful and the popular "Mansion Tour" provides a good historical overview – plus a complimentary wine tasting. "Journey to Jubilee" offers insight into the lives of the enslaved people who worked here for nearly a century, while the "Southern Food Traditions" walking tour takes you outside. There are even guided tours geared toward children.

Following whatever tour you choose, browse the specialty stores and wine shop. End your visit with a traditional Southern-style lunch at the on-site restaurant. For more of a taste of Belle Meade's wines or bourbon, reserve a spot for one of Belle Meade's culinary experiences.

Reelfoot Lake

Created in the early 1800s by a series of violent earthquakes, the 15,000-acre Reelfoot Lake sits in the northwest corner of the state in Tiptonville. This natural lake is unlike the state's many artificial reservoirs formed by damming. Reelfoot houses a unique ecosystem: a flooded forest whose cypress trees rise above the water's surface but are also submerged below as stumps.

Birders will enjoy touring with park naturalists to view the shore and wading birds. In winter thousands of American bald eagles converge on the lake – an occasion marked by the Reelfoot Lake Eagle Festival every February. Visitors enjoy the scenery, recreational activities, camping and peacefulness of the lake. For an extended getaway, bed down at Blue Bank Resort or set up camp in Reelfoot Lake State Park.

Visit the Birthplace of Country Music

While Nashville may be known as the "Country Music Capital of the World," Bristol is actually considered the birthplace of the genre. This twin city is located directly on the Virginia and Tennessee state line at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Tennessee , nicknamed The Volunteer State, sure has a lot of places to see and visit. When browsing through some of the most amazing pictures I was surely amazed with how many awesome sites I still have to visit in this state!

1. Lover’s Leap

Tennessee is home to some beautiful natural sights, but perhaps the best of the lot can be found at Lover’s Leap, which is where you can spot seven differed states – how many can you see? The rare white Fallow deer can also be seen within the Rock City attraction, but for the best views of the land surrounding Lookout Mountain visitors will have to be brave enough to cross the Swing-A-Long bridge.

From Lover’s Leap you will, on a clear day, be able to see Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama and the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. If you squint, you might just make out Kentucky and Virginia too – a great test for the eyes.

2. Great Smoky Mountain National Park

Straddling the border of Tennessee and North Carolina is the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, which is the most visited national park in the States. Biking, hiking, fishing and camping are among the many leisure activities available within the grounds of the park, while Cades Cove – which we will come to later in this list – is the single most frequented destination in the national park.

Horseback Riding and picnicking are among the most popular activities in the park, which has two main visitors’ centers: Sugarlands Visitors’ Center and Oconaluftee Visitor Center.

3. Big South Fork National River

Covering a massive 125,000 acres of the Cumberland Plateau, the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area is one of the most beautiful places to visit in the whole of Tennessee. There is a huge array of scenic gorges and sandstone bluffs to explore in the park, which has a rich and diverse history dating back for 10,000 years.

With five camping grounds, any happy camper visiting during a trip to Tennessee is well catered for, while taking a dip at Bandy Creek Swimming Pool is also a must during a visit to the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area.

4. Rainbow Hall

No trip experiencing the nature of Tennessee would be complete without taking in the amazing sight of Rainbow Hall, which can be found at Rock City. For anyone who has ever wondered what Chattanooga would look like with purple or green air, Rainbow Hall provides the unforgettable answer to that question.

Rainbow Hall has been made possible by windows covered in coloured gel, providing a completely unique way to take in the simply stunning scenery of Tennessee.

5. Rock Island State Park

As far as beautiful places to visit in Tennessee go, Rock Island State Park is right up there at the top. The Great Falls Gorge is one of the main natural and historical features of the park, which also boasts Twin Falls, a cascade waterfall spilling down from an underground cavern into the park’s Caney Fork.

The 883-acre park can be found on the headwaters of Center Hill Lake and there is no doubt that the scenery on show is among the finest on the Eastern Highland Rim.

6. Burgess Falls State Park

The waterfalls at Burgess Falls State Park are some of the most beautiful sights in Tennessee. Located on the Falling Water River, fishing and picnicking are some of the most popular activities at the park.

To see the most impressive of the waterfalls within the grounds of the park, the best trail to take is the 1.5-mile round-trip River Trail/Service Road Loop, which is of moderate difficulty. The half-mile Ridge Top Trail is also well worth taking on for the stunning views down the Falling Water River.

7. Gatlinburg

During winter in Tennessee, there is nowhere more beautiful to visit than the mountain resort of Gatlinburg . From November to February the town is lit up by stunning environmentally-friendly displays, with unique LED lighting displays along Gatlinburg’s famous Downtown Parkway, adjacent River Road, among the most impressive of the sights on offer.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park animals such as deer, foxes, squirrels and rabbits make up a part of the lighting displays, while a shiny rocking horse and dancing fountains can also be spotted.

Ober Gatlinburg is Tennessee’s only ski resort, while Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies is a popular attraction too.

8. Hurricane Mills

Hurricane Mills – the home of Loretta Lynn’s ranch – is one of Tennessee’s most popular tourist attractions. Loretta Lynn’s Coal Miner’s Daughter Museum is one of the main things to do, while the area also plays hosts to several concerts and motocross races, the highlight of which is probably the AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship.

Loretta Lynn’s ranch is arguably even more beautiful in its own way than Graceland, with Hurricane Mills also home to one of the most famous haunted houses in the region – dare you check it out?

9. Signal Mountain

Not only is Signal Mountain one of Tennessee’s most beautiful places to visit, it is certainly one of the state’s most historic locations too. Signal Point was originally used by Native Americans to send messages and today, the views from the top, looking over the Tennessee River Valley and the City of Chattanooga, are among the most unforgettable in the States.

Nearby places of interest include the Tennessee Riverfront and Aquarium, the Hunter Museum of Art and the Chattanooga Choo Choo, as well as all the many attractions of downtown Chattanooga.

10. Dollywood Express Steam Train

To experience the breathtaking scenery of the Great Smoky Mountains, there are few better journeys than the Dollywood Express Steam Train, a 20-minute mountain excursion providing some of the most beautiful views of anywhere in the United States, let alone in the state of Tennessee.

The theme park the railway is a part of was renamed Dollywood in the 1980s after singer Dolly Parton purchased a part-stake in the park. In a typical season, around three million people visit Dollywood, making it one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Tennessee.

11. Cade’s Cove

Among the most popular destinations in the Great Smokies, Cade’s Cove is arguably the most beautiful spot anywhere in the state of Tennessee. The isolated valley attracts more than two million visitors a year, with a trip around Cade’s Cove taking between two to four hours by car at a leisurely pace – it is also permitted to cycle through Cade’s Cove, with bikes available to rent too.

White-tailed deer are among the wildlife that can be spotted at Cade’s Cove, as well as black bears, coyotes, skunks, groundhogs and many, many other types of animals. The Cades Cove Historic District is, quite rightly, included on the National Register of Historic Places.

12. Cumberland Caverns

One of the longest caves in the whole world, Cumberland Caverns is a must for anyone seeking a truly unique experience during their visit to Tennessee. Year-round commercial tours of the cave are available through the Cumberland Caverns company, while there is also the chance to go spelunking or even host a wedding party in the cave system. In total, there are well over 30 miles of caves and underground passageways to explore a Cumberland Caverns.

13. Abandoned Tennessee State Penitentiary

The old Tennessee State Prison is one of the most beautiful buildings in Tennessee, as well as one of the most physically imposing. The prison has been closed since 1992 but in the last two decades it has grown into one of the state’s most popular strange tourist attractions. The Green Mile, Attica, and The Last Castle are among the movies to have had some scenes filmed at the old Tennessee State Prison.

A tour of the abandoned building even provides the chance to experience the eerie site of the prison’s old Death Row. The prison can be found just a few miles to the west of Nashville and is one of the spookiest and most memorable days out in the state.

Ghost River Rentals - Moscow

The Ghost River in one of the region’s most unique rivers, and there are so many ways to experience it. Start small with the 600-foot boardwalk that meanders through the swamp or take the 6.5-mile Lost Swamp Trail. For the more adventurous day trippers, stop by Ghost River Rentals to enjoy the Ghost River by canoe, kayak, or stand-up paddle board.

Davies Manor Historic Site - Bartlet t

The Davies Manor Historic Site  in Bartlett is a popular destination for history buffs, but it also features an official Backyard Wildlife Habitat. The site has several gardens and an arboretum walking trail you can explore on your own, along with the historic outbuildings on the property. 

Glenn Springs Lake - Drummonds

The Glenn Springs Lake is over 300-acres and is a perfect getaway for fishing and enjoying the outdoors. Settle in at one of the fishing piers or bring your boat for a day of sailing. With picnic pavilions, a clubhouse and restrooms for your convenience, you can spend a whole day relaxing with the family. 

Fort Pillow State Historic Park - Henning

Another site rich with history, Fort Pillow State Historic Park covers 1,600 acres on the first Chickasaw Bluff. There are over 20 miles of hiking trails, many that follow the site’s earthwork fortifications, boating, paddling and fishing. The state park also has six campsites, including eco-friendly camping, that accommodate RVs and campers up to 60 ft. with 20, 30, 50-amp electrical and water hookups. There are 15 sites with 20-amp electrical hookups and water stations in close proximity to each site.

Fun Things to Do During Winter in Tennessee

Being the only proper ski area in the entire state, Ober Gatlinburg offers ( almost ) every winter activity possible!

Visiting Ober is also one of our favorite things to do in Gatlinburg !

To begin with, getting there is an adventure in itself. Choose between taking a scenic 17-mile drive up a winding road, or, elevate your experience (literally!) and take the aerial tram from downtown Gatlinburg.

Step off the tram (or arrive via the road), and you’re suddenly in Ober’s winter wonderland. It’s no illusion; Ober goes to impressive lengths to bring in and accumulate genuine snow over several weeks. So that glistening winter wonderland? It’s real.

Skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts will be in heaven, with multiple runs of varying difficulty levels. Ober offers far more than just thrilling downhills during winter in Tennessee, however.

The whole family can enjoy endless activities. For example, there’s tubing, a mountain coaster, and everyone’s favorite, bumper cars on ice . Also, you can glide gracefully… or not so gracefully …across the ice skating rink. (We’re not the best at ice skating!)

For family-friendly activities at Ober, head over to the snow zone — a playful kiddie area with snowy obstacle courses, small sledding hills, and more.

2. Chase Frozen Waterfalls in the Smokies

If exploring on two feet is more your style, head for America’s most popular national park .

The Great Smoky Mountain National Park is accessible year-round—and somehow even more majestic under snow , too, making it one of the best places to visit in Tennessee during winter.

But what takes this adventure to the next level is that several waterfalls in the Smokies freeze in the winter.

In particular, Grotto Falls, the only waterfall in the park you can walk behind , is spectacular in the winter. As the water freezes, it forms sparkling “curtains” of ice!

To get to Grotto Falls in the winter, you’ll have to double the warm-weather hike. When Roaring Fork Motor Trail closes (right around Thanksgiving, until April), you have to start from the Rainbow Falls trailhead.

Another must-see frozen cascade is Ramsey Cascades, the tallest waterfall in the park . In the winter, this multi-tiered, 100-plus-foot-tall waterfall freezes into sheets and massive icicles.

Hiking to Ramsey Cascades is challenging even in ideal weather. It involves about 2,000 feet of elevation gain! However, the reward of witnessing this huge frozen waterfall up close is well worth the effort.

Plus, as a bonus, the park is slightly less crowded in the winter months.

3. Speedway in Lights — Bristol

One of the most unique events during winter in Tennessee is the Pinnacle Speedway in Lights .

The iconic Bristol Motor Speedway hosts this dazzling drive-through, featuring over three million twinkling lights .

You’ll drive a 4-mile route through the lights, starting in the parking lot. Eventually, you’ll end up on the legendary track itself, affectionately called the “World’s Fastest Half-Mile.”

Yep, you’ll actually get to drive a lap on the Bristol Motor Speedway yourself !

Pro tip: Buy your tickets in advance. The lines are LONG, even on weeknights and for folks with tickets in hand. If you prefer, purchase “Fast Lane” tickets for an extra fee, which, allows you to skip the lines.

Whether you make it to Speedway in Lights or not, you can also lace up your skates and take a spin at the Tri-Cities Airport Ice Skating Rink . It’s also located at the track.

4. Reelfoot Lake State Park Eagle Fest — Tiptonville

In the far northwest corner of the state, you’ll find a truly unique winter in Tennessee experience. During the Reelfoot Lake Eagle Festival , you’ll have the rare opportunity to spot bald eagles up close .

Reelfoot Lake, the largest natural lake in Tennessee, sits along the Mississippi River, a major natural flyway. It serves as an important winter home for bald eagles , along with other waterfowl.

Because they generally stay in this area when it’s cold, winter is an excellent time to watch them feed and majestically soar. The 3-day weekend event in February is also a photographer’s dream!

During the festival, the park offers bus tours and photography workshops . While these are the main draws, you can also participate in other activities. These include art contests, live birds of prey demonstrations, and children’s activities, like duck decoy painting.

5. A Country Christmas at the Gaylord Opryland Resort — Nashville

No matter how old you are, where you’re from, or what you’re into, Christmas at Gaylord Opryland is one of the highlights of winter in Tennessee.

This sprawling Nashville resort never fails to impress, but it majorly steps up its game during the holiday season.

ICE! is the resort’s signature winter event, an immersive experience with a Polar Express theme. The attraction uses over two million pounds of ice to carve unbelievable, larger-than-life sculptures.

It’s only 9 ° Fahrenheit inside the exhibit, so the resort provides parkas on hand to keep guests warm.

In addition to ICE!, Gaylord Opryland also has other fun activities such as snow tubing, ice skating, icy bumper cars, and even river cruises . Plus, the stunning resort puts up over three million twinkling lights and elaborate decorations.

6. Watch the Marching Ducks at The Peabody Hotel — Memphis

Embrace the whimsy of winter in Tennessee at The Peabody Hotel, where the famed daily “duck parade” draws onlookers year-round. However, the entire scene is on a whole different level during the holidays!

When winter sets in, the Peabody transforms into a glittering holiday hotel . The stars ( aside from the ducks of course ) are the 40-foot Christmas tree and the iconic fountain , decked out to the nines in their holiday best.

No matter when you visit Memphis, you can witness the daily duck march at 11:00 am and 5:00 pm . They march down a red carpet, from the elevators to the lobby fountain. Spectators line the red carpet, cheering the ducks on and getting great photo ops.

If you happen to be in town for Thanksgiving, don’t miss the annual tree lighting ceremony. The event follows the evening duck march on Black Friday and features a special appearance by Santa Claus himself.

7. Cruise the Tennessee River in Chattanooga

The most significant feature of the Big South Fork is the river gorge that cuts through the softer Mississippian rock beneath the hardened Pennsylvanian capstone of the Cumberland Plateau.

Rock City Gardens – Chattanooga

This unique attraction features a series of trails through “forests” of rocks perched atop sandstone shelves, giving it its name. There are incredible views out across the Tennessee valley and you can see seven states from the top! The trails get pretty steep in places so make sure you look after your knees ;)

Sunset Rock Overlook

Sunset Rock Viewpoint is a 0.2-mile moderately trafficked out and back trail with lovely wildflowers located near Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, and is classified as easy. The path is primarily utilized for walking, hiking, and running and is ideal between April and September. Dogs are permitted on this walk but must be kept on a leash.

Percy Priest Lake

The J. Percy Priest Lake is a reservoir in Tennessee’s north-central region. The dam, which spans between miles six and seven on the Stones River, was built in 1931 by Congressman Percy Priest to form this body of water. The lake and dam are named for Congressman Percy Priest, who served in the United States Congress from 1869 to 1903.

Fort Pillow State Historic Park

Confederate forces killed nearly 200 Black soldiers fighting for the Union during the Fort Pillow Massacre on April 12, 1864. The slaughter became a rallying point for enslaved people seeking freedom, and it steeled the resolve of Black Union troops, who yelled out “Remember Fort Pillow!” as their battle cry.

Frozen Head SP

The Frozen Head SP and Natural Area includes more than 24,000 acres of wildness and is named for a 3,324-foot peak in the Cumberland Mountains, the top of which is frequently blanketed in ice or snow in the winter months. The magnificent entrance leads visitors into a remnant of densely wooded, unspoiled mountain

The park has 20 tent campsites. Backpacking and day-hiking routes provide for wildlife viewing opportunities across 50 miles of trails.

The park office is located near several trailheads, with less-used trailheads accessible via Armes Gap and off Highway 62 to the south. Only hiking is permitted on most of the paths, although mountain biking is allowed on one.

Chickasaw State Recreation Area

Chickasaw SP was named for the Chickasaw Nation, who lived in West Tennessee and North Mississippi. One of Tennessee’s 20 New Deal-era state parks, with a total area of 1,400 acres in West Tennessee along the border of Hardeman and Chester Counties, was established in 1933.

The park is on some of the highest ground in Tennessee. 1,280 acres of the region’s 14,384 acres of timberland are utilized for leisure.

There are several activities available for visitors to try at Chickasaw State Park, including more than four miles of easy to moderate walking trails and a bike-friendly route.

Harrison Bay SP

House Mountain Class I Scenic-Recreational State Natural Area

House Mountain is a 527-acre natural area in Knox County about 15 miles from downtown Knoxville. The steep slopes of House Mountain are heavily forested, with a distinctive variety of scenic vistas, rock outcrops, and plant life.

Birdwatchers enjoy visiting the mountain. From the hill, migrating hawks and warblers may be seen. On the mountain, pileated woodpeckers, scarlet tanagers, wild turkeys, and more than a hundred different species of birds have been observed.

Long Hunter State Park

The Long Hunter State Park offers fishing, hiking, and other outdoor activities, as well as two boat ramp accesses on Percy Priest Lake. A group campsite, meeting center, visitor center, and backcountry campsite are all available.

One of the most famous areas in Tennessee, Beale Street in Memphis has everything you could possibly want for a fun day out. The street is lined with bars and restaurants selling food from all around the world no matter if you’re craving Mexican or Thai.

There are also shops here selling music memorabilia if it’s music your thing – one idea is to get an old vinyl record engraved. There’s lots of blues music playing along this street, it would be hard to miss.

Gatlinburg SkyLift

A funicular railway that runs up to 1,800 feet above sea level and offers stunning views over Crockett Mountain. The ride only takes 8 minutes but is well worth it for some amazing photos at sunrise or sunset.

Check out the Sky Bridge and Sky Deck while you’re there! Downtown Gatlinburg can be a little kitschy, but there are some cool sights worth seeing.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Middle Tennessee is home to a variety of wildlife and plant species, including black bears, deer, wild turkeys, and a variety of rare plants.

The views are stunning, and I could see for miles in every direction; the park was full of hiking trails, and I could explore caves, waterfalls, and old-growth forests.

I was also able to participate in some of the park's educational  programs, which provided me with a much deeper  understanding of the history and ecology of the area.

I learned about the rich cultural heritage of the Cherokee people and the importance of the park in preserving their legacy; I also had the opportunity to learn more about the Appalachian  Mountains, which are an integral part of the park's landscape.

Overall, my experience at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was incredible. I was able to explore the natural beauty of the area and learn more about its history and culture. I highly - recommend it to anyone looking to experience nature in all its glory!

Stones River National Battlefield in Middle  Tennessee is a must-visit for anyone interested in the history of the Civil War. I recently visited the Battlefield and was struck by the beautiful and serene landscape that it offered.

The battlefield is a reminder of one of the Bloodiest battles of the Civil War, with over 24,000 casualties. The park is filled with monuments, interpretive signs, and markers that help tell the story of the battle and its significance.

The most impressive  site is the iconic Stone’s River itself, which winds through the park. This river was the backdrop for the Battle of Stone’s River, and the park is a beautiful reminder of the events that took place here in 1862. As I walked  through the park, I could imagine the sounds of battle and the intense  emotions of the soldiers involved.

The park also offers several trails that offer the perfect opportunity to explore the landscape and see the sites from the Battle. The trails - wind through the park and offer great views of the battlefield. As I hiked through the trails; I was struck by the peacefulness  of the area, which makes it a great place to reflect on the events of the past.

The park also offers several events that allow visitors to learn more about the Battle of Stone’s River and the Civil War. I especially enjoyed the living History demonstrations and the interpretive talks that are offered by knowledgeable park rangers!

5. The Titanic Museum

The Titanic  Museum in Middle Tennessee is a place that I have been wanting to visit for a long - time and recently had the chance to do so.

As soon as I entered the museum, I was taken aback by the sheer size and grandeur of the space. It really felt like I was stepping- back in time and standing on the Decks of the Titanic itself.

The museum was filled with artifacts and displays that gave me a better understanding of the history and story of the Titanic. There were also interactive games and activities  that allowed me to further explore the tragedy. I particularly enjoyed the Replica of the ship with its life-sized Replica of the grand staircase.

The museum also had a number of interactive exhibits that allowed visitors to explore the ship and its decks. I found myself spending a lot of time trying to get to know the people who were on board the Titanic. It was fascinating to learn about the different  classes of passengers and the stories of the crew.

Overall, my visit to the Titanic Museum in Middle Tennessee was a truly un- forgettable experience. I was able to gain a better understanding of the history of the Titanic and the people who were on board. If you are ever in the area, I highly  recommend stopping by and learning more about this fascinating event!

I recently visited Beale Street, an iconic  street in the area of Middle Tennessee.

It’s a place full of history, culture, and music. It’s a place that makes you feel like you’re in a different world. The street is lined with historic buildings and a wide variety of restaurants, bars, and shops; I especially enjoyed the music  venues, which feature local and International acts performing live and the atmosphere is Vibrant and inviting, and the music is simply incredible!

I also got to explore the Iconic Beale Street Landing, a multi-purpose building with a pier, a performance venue, and a marina.

It’s a great place to spend some time, whether you’re looking for a bite to eat or just want to take in the views of the river and the city skyline.

Overall, my experience in Beale Street was one of the most - memorable of my life. It’s a place that’s steeped in history and culture, and it’s a great place to spend a day or a weekend. It’s a must-visit for anyone who’s looking for an unforgettable experience!

I recently had the pleasure of visiting The Crystal Shrine Grotto in Middle Tennessee. I was awed by this unique place – a man-made Cave with a stunning - natural display of  crystals and minerals;

The Grotto is made up of two - levels with a small Waterfall feature Cascading down the side.

The walls and ceiling of the Grotto are covered with a dazzling array of crystals and minerals, including quartz, amethyst, and Calcite.

The effect is mesmerizing, as the sparkle  of the crystals reflects off the walls; there are also several  Sculptures, including a statue of the Virgin Mary, which adds to the Grotto’s Spiritual atmosphere.

The Grotto is a great place for silent  contemplation and reflection. Even if you don’t believe in the spiritual aspects of the Grotto, it’s a beautiful and unique  place to visit. The combination of natural beauty and man-made art is truly Spectacular!

Your Guide to West Tennessee: Where to Go, Play, Eat, and Stay

H ave you ever visited a destination where everyone you meet welcomes you with open arms, every city makes you think, “Maybe I should move here,” and the locals tell you stories that warm your heart? Well, this is how I felt when I visited West Tennessee.

Reasons to visit West Tennessee are numerous, from the extensive music history in Memphis and Jackson, to outdoor adventures like hiking or kayaking in Pickwick Landing State Park, to more unique experiences you can’t find anywhere else like the Peabody Duck March (more on that later). If you’re planning a visit, here’s your guide to West Tennessee, including which cities and towns to visit, what to do and eat there, and where to stay while you’re in town.

The best places to visit in West Tennessee: Memphis

Memphis is the largest and best known city in West Tennessee. It’s a dynamic city with a little something for everyone — it’s the home of the blues and the birthplace of rock n’ roll, it played a pivotal role in the civil rights movement, and it has a dining landscape to rival other major American cities. If you’re visiting West Tennessee, Memphis is an essential stop, and although it’s located as far west as you can go before you hit the Arkansas border, it still makes for a good home base if you plan on day-tripping to other parts of the state.

If you’re visiting Memphis, you can’t miss the famous Peabody Duck March, hosted daily at the The Peabody Hotel. The history of the duck march goes like this: In 1933, the manager of The Peabody Hotel went hunting with some friends. They were using live decoys, which was legal at the time, and after a little too much Tennessee whiskey, they thought it would be funny to bring the live ducks back to the hotel and put them in the fountain lobby. What they thought would be a funny joke turned out to be a tradition with serious staying power.

Now, every day from 11 AM to 5 PM, a team of impeccably trained ducks, led by the Duckmaster, are marched from their rooftop home to the hotel’s lobby fountain and back. The ritual is accompanied by music and a large crowd of onlookers. Guests and non-guests alike are invited to watch the march — just be sure to get there early to get a good seat.

Beale Street

According to Memphis Tourism, Beale Street is currently Tennessee’s most visited attraction. Established in 1841, Beale Street was an area for Black culture and commerce. After yellow fever hit in the 1870s, the city had to forfeit its charter. At this time, a formerly enslaved man named Robert Reed Church acquired land in the area, and his investments helped restore the business community’s confidence in Memphis. Part of Church’s contribution was the Robert R. Church Park at the corner of Beale and Fourth, which quickly drew in blues musicians and featured a 2,000-seat auditorium. Beale Street was also home to many Black-owned businesses and clubs, and served as the headquarters of Ida B. Wells’s anti-segregationist newspaper, Free Speech. In 1977, it was officially declared the Home of the Blues by an act of Congress.

Today, Beale Street is best known for its nightlife, blues, and barbecue. Bar-hoppers can flit between venues such as Silky O’Sullivans, an Irish pub; Rum Boogie Cafe, a famous blues club; and my favorite, B.B. King’s Blues Club, a club-style restaurant with a live band, dancing, and a full menu including ribs, shrimp and grits, barbeque, and more. Note that most of the bars on Beale Street have a cover charge. There are also street performers and walk-up bars where you can order a cocktail to-go while you walk around Beale.

National Civil Rights Museum

The National Civil Rights Museum is located in the former Lorraine Motel where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. The museum is a profound and educational destination that maps out the history of the civil rights movement in the US. It provides a moving and comprehensive journey through the struggles and triumphs of the movement in chronological order, from slavery, to the Montgomery Bus Boycott, to sit-ins and the assassination of Martin Luther King. The National Civil Rights Museum is an emotionally charged and essential experience for those seeking to understand the legacy of the civil rights movement.

Old Dominick Distillery

Old Dominick is located in a 100-year-old restored building that now offers a tour and tasting, a retail spirits shop, and a restaurant. You can eat at the restaurant as well as sit at the bar, or you can take a guided tour through Old Dominick Distillery to learn about the art of crafting spirits, complete with a tasting. This hour-long tour takes you through the whole process of whiskey making, and you can even get your hands a little dirty during the fermentation process by feeling and tasting the mixture. There are a few things that make Old Dominick’s whiskey and spirits stand out; the biggest thing is the water. The water in Memphis comes from the Memphis Sand Aquifer, which sits hundreds of feet underground. This helps to make the spirits sweeter.

Old Dominick produces Tennessee whiskey, vodka, gin, bourbon, and more. In November 2022, Old Dominick released the first whiskey distilled, aged, and bottled in Memphis (legally) since Prohibition. What’s even more interesting is that the person who crafted that whiskey is Alex Castle, the first female master distiller in Tennessee history and Old Dominick’s master distiller. Reservations are encouraged when booking your tour.

Where to eat in Memphis

What started as a pop-up ghost restaurant now serves authentic Italian-American food. Visiting Cocozza felt like walking into an old-school Italian restaurant, with red checkered tablecloths, music, and huge portions. The vodka rigatoni was creamy, flavorful, and on the spicier side. The baked garlic bread was crispy and filled with melted parmesan and mozzarella cheese and garlic. The antipasti is big enough to share with a few people and has prosciutto, salami, roasted eggplant, olives, and more. As cocktails go, The Hugo was perfectly refreshing, made with St. Germain, Prosecco, mint, and lime. It’s like an Italian version of a mojito.

Bishop is a modern French brasserie that offers beer and wine with simple hearty food. Expect French dishes prepared the traditional way, as well as modern twists on classics. You’ll find everything from escargot and oysters to avocado toast and eggs.

Standing for South of Beale, this gastropub was featured on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives . The free house-seasoned popcorn that’s on the table when you arrive is addicting. The menu has a wide variety of options such as duck fried rice; a soul bowl, which is a twist on fried chicken; and a Colorado-inspired breakfast burrito with green chilis and braised pork. Make sure to order the general tso’s cauliflower, which has a sweet and sour glaze, and the Philly cheesesteak egg rolls, which come with a spicy aioli for dipping. SOB has two locations in Memphis and another in Collierville, a suburb of Memphis.

The Lobbyist

Mixing global styles with ingredients sourced from local farmers, the menu at The Lobbyist is focused on seasonal produce and local meats. I ordered carrots, which retained a nice crunch after being cooked and came with a kimchi cilantro honey dip, and beets, which were served with a creamy yogurt sauce. I also had a simple arugula salad that was elevated with Grana Padano cheese and a crunchy breadcrumb topping. On the drinks menu, you’ll find an extensive list of wines ranging from sparkling to white, red, and rose. You can also find bottled and draft beer and a selection of cocktails. I had the Kirby’s Dreamland, a sparkling vodka-based cocktail with notes of strawberry, rose, and lemon.

Hog and Hominy

Hog and Hominy is a culinary haven where Southern and Italian flavors collide. This James Beard-nominated restaurant is known for its inventive classics, such as wood-fired pizzas, gourmet pasta dishes, and entrees like burgers, seafood, and salads. The Thunderbird is a particularly standout spicy-sweet pizza with fontina cheese, pepperoni, calabrese, and Calabrian honey. Another must-try is the crab claws. Pro tip: dip your pizza crust into the lemon butter sauce from the crab claws.

Jackson is located about an hour and a half east of Memphis. Although Jackson is the eighth largest city in Tennessee with a population of about 69,000, you still get that small-town feel. Being the birthplace of rockabilly, a mixture of rock and country music, Jackson’s rich music culture is evident as soon as you walk through downtown and see the murals as well as in the Legends of Tennessee Music Museum.

In downtown Jackson, you’ll find the Legends of Tennessee Music Museum. The museum will take you on a journey through the state’s musical history with over 500 relics from legends such as Carl Perkins’ first guitar, Tina Turner mementos, costumes and guitars used by Elvis Presley, and more. The museum is open Wednesday-Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM. During my visit to the museum, I was lucky to be shown around by Becky Fly, one of the museum’s storytellers, who walked us through the exhibits with infectious enthusiasm.

Century Farm Winery

Tucked away in the Jackson’s idyllic countryside is Century Farm Winery. The Center for Historic Preservation has designated the site a Tennessee Century Farm, meaning that the farm has belonged to the same family for at least 100 years. Century Farm Winery is now owned by Bart Horton, a sixth-generation owner over the last 200 years. In the tasting room, you can try five award-winning wines for $5, as well as enjoy slushies, wine by the glass, and even non-wine products such as beer or Coca-Cola products. White wine drinkers will enjoy the Traminette, a citrusy semi-sweet white that finishes with spicy notes. The Norton may be more your speed if you are a red drinker. Made with Norton grapes, you can expect blackberry and black cherry notes, as well as an earthy finish. Visitors are welcome in the tasting room starting at 10 AM Monday-Saturday and 12 PM on Sunday. Note that large groups may want to book a private tasting in advance.

Samuel T. Bryant Distillery

Located a few minutes down the road from Century Farm Winery is the Samuel T. Bryant Distillery. Here, you can enjoy tastings of whiskey, vodka, moonshine, and more. While true Tennessee whiskey is aged in oak barrels or filtered through charcoal, this distillery has tweaked its process to use copper stills, which results in a smoother taste. Everything is made and bottled on site, and no artificial flavors or sweeteners are added.

For $10, visitors can take a 20-minute tour of the distillery before enjoying four complimentary samples. Additional tastings can be purchased. I tried two of the cream liquors, Sunday Morning Cartoons, which tasted just like the milk from a bowl of Fruity Pebble cereal, and Butter Pecan Cream, which tasted like melted ice cream. As a bonus, the distillery is not only dog-friendly (look out for the owner’s poodle, Sandy, when you visit) but animal-friendly at large. We were told that someone brought in their pet raccoon one day.

Serving up delicious Ethnos coffee, tea, and pastries, Turntable Coffee Counter is the best place to stop for your caffeine fix. The name is an ode to Jackson’s rockabilly music heritage, as well as its train history since the device that rotates train cars is called a turntable. I ordered the Trailmix Tape Latte, which had pecan syrup, salt, and a berry drizzle. It was delicious.

The Blacksmith Restaurant

The Blacksmith Restaurant in downtown Jackson is located in a building that once operated as a blacksmith shop in the mid-19th century. The ambiance is warm and inviting with exposed brick walls, but the food steals the show with high-end spins on classics such as burgers, steaks, and seafood dishes. Vegetarian options are also available. The basil pesto burger and ahi tuna salad were standouts of the menu when I visited.

Located in the historic Neely House, Skillet Junction offers Southern comforts like chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits, eggs benedict, and lemon mascarpone pancakes. Inside Skillet Junction, you’ll also find Peppermint Addies, a sweet shop run by Addie, the daughter of Skillet Junction owners Regina and Jacob Richmond, as well as Pure Scent Essence Candle Bar, run by Shaketha Mebane.

The best places to visit in West Tennessee: Selmer

Selmer is a small rural town in West Tennessee with a population of about 5,000 people. Located under an hour south of Jackson by car, and under two hours east of Memphis, it makes for a pleasant day trip from bigger cities in West Tennessee.

Downtown Selmer is a perfect place to stroll, shop, and grab a bite during a day trip. Between pursuing stores such as Mammy’s Soap Co, The Loft, and The Shoppe on Main and eating at one of the many cafes in town, keep an eye out for the murals that decorate downtown Selmer, including the particularly well known Rockabilly Mural.

Hockaday Handmade Brooms

Hockaday Brooms is one of only 200 traditional broom-makers left across the US. This family-owned business has been crafting traditional handmade brooms for generations.

Traditional broom-making entails growing the broomcorn, a type of sorghum plant; creating the handles from logs or branches; and securing the broomcorn around the handle with wire. After the broomcorn is secured, the head of the broom is stitched. All of this can be seen through the demonstration by broom-maker Jack Martin. “It takes five months and 45 minutes to make each broom,” says Martin. “Five months to grow the broom corn and 45 minutes to make the broom.”

Witnessing a broom being created is an experience I will never forget. The passion he has for his business is evident as he explains how he got started in the business and how he teaches apprentices the art of broom-making to keep the tradition alive. Jack is an amazing storyteller, and this was one of my favorite parts of the trip.

Where to eat in Selmer

Pat’s Cafe famously serves slugburgers. Originally from Corinth, Mississippi, slugburgers were found in many small restaurants close to railroads throughout Mississippi, Alabama, and lower Tennessee. The old-fashioned hamburger comes with a patty made from a mixture of beef and pork and an inexpensive meat extender such as soybeans that’s then deep-fried and served on a bun with mustard, pickles, onions, and sometimes cheese.

The history of the slugburger dates back to around the 1920s when the price of meat skyrocketed, hence the use of meat extenders such as potato flake, soy, or flour. At that time, slugburgers cost a nickel, which was called a “slug.” The price of a slugburger at Pat’s Cafe is now $1.25. If that doesn’t sound like your thing, you can also find country ham, pancakes, biscuits and gravy, and more on the menu at Pat’s.

The best places to visit in West Tennessee: Hardin County

Hardin County lies along the Tennessee River on the Mississippi border. One of the biggest draws to the county is Pickwick Landing State Park, which provides visitors with scenic views and outdoor adventures that showcase the natural beauty of West Tennessee. Throughout the county, you can also visit museums, peruse shops, and learn more about Civil War history at the Shiloh National Military Park.

Savannah is a small, historic city in Hardin County. To learn what makes it historic, visitors can take a two-mile, self-guided tour that will take you past 42 homes, the historic Savannah Theatre, and the Savannah Cemetery — you can grab the map from the Tennessee River Museum (see below). One highlight of the tour is Cherry Mansion. Before the Battle of Shiloh during the Civil War, the mansion served as Ulysses S. Grant’s headquarters. Though the mansion is not open to visitors, it’s worth admiring from the sidewalk, where you’ll find placards explaining its significance. You can also walk down through the gate to the river viewpoint to read more about the mansion’s history.

Tennessee River Museum

The Tennessee River Museum is located in Hardin County’s historic Savannah district. The museum takes visitors on a journey from prehistoric life to post-war reconciliation, detailing the unique history of the Tennessee River Valley. There are plenty of exhibits, some interactive, including Paleontology with over 200 fossil specimens, and Archaeology, which explores the lives of the native societies that originally populated the Tennessee River Valley. The Golden Age of Steamboats is another fun exhibit that chronicles the rise of the steamboats, which led to the booming trade in the Tennessee River Valley.

Pickwick Landing State Park

If you’re an outdoor lover, you won’t want to miss Pickwick Landing State Park for activities such as hiking, fishing, and kayaking. The water was perfectly calm when I kayaked there, making for a relaxing paddle down the lake. While on the water, I saw wildlife such as ducks, fish, and different kinds of birds.

Shiloh National Military Park

Established in 1894 to preserve the scene of the first major battle in the Western part of the Civil War, Shiloh National Military Park contains what’s considered one of the best-preserved battlefields in the nation — one that measures an impressive 5,000 acres. Inside the park’s visitor center, some exhibits display tools of war along with their effects, and you can watch an award-winning film, Shiloh: Fiery Trail . Also on the premises is the United States National Cemetery, which contains the graves of 4,000 soldiers and their family members. Note that there are no walking trails to explore the park; you must drive to each of the stops. Before you go, make sure to download the NPS App to access the Shiloh Audio Driving Tour since the service is spotty inside the park.

Hagy’s catfish hotel.

Hagy’s Catfish Hotel is a longtime family-owned restaurant. Opened in 1938, it’s now run by the third generation of the Hagy family. The restaurant’s specialty is its “world famous catfish,” but there are plenty of other menu items to choose from, as well, including salads, burgers, chicken, and steaks. Be sure to try the delicious hushpuppies when you go.

Selah Coffee

This locally owned coffee shop is located in the historic district of Savannah. It serves various coffee drinks including espressos, pour-overs, tea, and other non-coffee drinks. The iced oatmeal cookie latte, made with oat milk and brown sugar syrup, was creamy and delicious.

The Outpost

Part restaurant, part general store, part old-fashioned ice cream shop, and part lodge, the complex that houses The Outpost restaurant captures the essence of Southern hospitality. I went to The Outpost for breakfast and had the two-egg breakfast with bacon and toast. I also tried the biscuits with chocolate gravy, which is exactly what it sounds like — it tasted like melted chocolate ice cream over warm buttery biscuits. Delicious as they are, they’re also quite decadent, so you may want to consider sharing.

This whimsical, car-themed restaurant offers delicious American dishes like smash burgers and fries, nachos, wings, and more. You’ll find car-themed decor throughout the entire restaurant.
