From Waimea Canyon to Waikiki Beach, Hawaii’s wealth of natural beauty (think: cerulean waters, verdant vegetation and stunning white sand beaches ) is just waiting to be explored. To help you decide which Hawaiian Island is ideal for your next vacation, U.S. News took into account sights, expert opinion and reader input to determine the best Hawaiian Islands to visit. Kaua'i

Hawaii - the big island, honolulu - oahu.

Though it's perhaps most famous for the fabulous coastlines of Ka'anapali Beach and Wailea Beach, Maui is a great option for both couples and families looking for variety in their vacation. Away from the sand, you can drive the Road to Hana, enjoy a bird's-eye view during a helicopter tour , see one of the world's largest dormant volcanoes at Haleakala National Park and get up close to marine wildlife while snorkeling in Honolua Bay or around Molokini. Then, for an experience you won’t forget, relax on the volcanic coastline of Wai'anapanapa State Park, where jet-black sands meet vibrant sapphire waters.

With a more easygoing environment than other islands like Oahu and the Big Island, the Garden Isle lets its wild, natural beauty speak for itself and is perfect for an adventurous getaway. The main attractions here are Koke'e State Park and Waimea Canyon, otherwise known as the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific." But you also won’t want to miss Kaua'i’s breathtaking Wailua Falls or dreamy Po'ipu Beach. And if a challenging hike is what you’re after, it doesn’t get more scenic than the Kalalau Trail along the rugged Napali Coast. Just remember to pack galoshes and a rain jacket – Kaua'i is one of Hawaii's rainiest islands.

The island of Hawaii's bevy of one-of-a-kind attractions and family-friendly activities makes it ideal for travelers who prefer a jam-packed itinerary. Not only does the Big Island offer white and black sand beaches , including the famous Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, it is also home to lush rainforests and two active volcanoes at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. History buffs will love visiting Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historic Site (home to one of Hawaii's largest restored temples) and Kealakekua Bay (where British explorer James Cook first arrived in 1779). Or, head to Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park to see petroglyphs, ancient Hawaiian fishponds and green sea turtles.

The least-developed island on this list, Moloka'i was made for those who don’t mind going off the beaten path. With lush rainforests, miles of beautiful beaches and some of the tallest sea cliffs in the world, Moloka'i is a great place to reconnect with nature, whether you’re staying overnight at one of Moloka'i’s quiet oceanfront cottages – there is only one hotel on the island – or visiting on a day trip from one of the other Hawaiian Islands. Top activities here include soaking up some sun on secluded Papohaku Beach, snorkeling Moloka'i's 28-mile reef or joining a guided cultural hike through Halawa Valley.

Dubbed The Gathering Place, Oahu is home to plenty of famous sites and a great jumping-off point for first-time visitors to the Hawaiian Islands. On the South Shore, you'll find Waikiki Beach, Hanauma Bay, Pearl Harbor National Memorial and Le'ahi (Diamond Head) State Monument, all in or near the capital city of Honolulu. Meanwhile, the North Shore is home to a more laid-back vibe, as well as the renowned waves at Waimea Bay and Sunset Beach, which host major surfing competitions every year. After exploring along the coast, head inland to the tranquil Byodo-In Temple, a replica of a Buddhist temple in Uji, Japan.

For a secluded, nature-centric escape, set your sights on Lana'i. Centrally located between Maui and Moloka'i, this remote hideaway makes a great home base for inter-island travel. Travelers can take a four-wheel-drive vehicle to spots like Kaiolohia (Shipwreck Beach) and Kaunolu Village, a prehistoric fishing village that was once frequented by King Kamehameha I, or spend their days sunbathing on Polihua Beach. In winter, head to Hulopo'e Bay for terrific whale-watching opportunities. Then, make your way to Keahiakawelo (Garden of the Gods), an enchanting rock garden that was once part of a native dryland forest, for a breathtaking Lana'i sunset.

When you’re planning a trip to Hawaii for the first time, it can be confusing to understand what the difference is between all of the islands. And yes, they are very different. Each island offers something unique and it can be hard to understand what the best one for you to visit is, especially when it’s your first trip. 

In our opinion, if this is your first time to Hawaii, the best island to visit is Maui. You can get a bit of everything on Maui: adventure, great snorkeling, good hiking, lush jungle experiences, beautiful beaches, excellent food, and great places to stay. Not only that, but it typically has the best weather and has more than enough to keep you busy for your entire vacation.

It’s not just because we love Maui (though we do), we have a long list of reasons why Maui is right for your first trip. 

9 Reasons Why Maui is the Best Island to Visit in Hawaii for Your First Time

There are a number of reasons why we think Maui is the best for first-timers, but the top nine reasons are:

1. Beautiful beaches

I know what you’re thinking: don’t all Hawaiian islands have great beaches? Yes, but Maui has the most easily-accessible beaches, a number of unbelievable coves, and plenty of options for people less comfortable with the ocean to take a dip.

You don’t have to drive far to find a beach that will offer a really pleasant swimming experience as most of the hotels and vacation rentals are right along them.

Since we have a young child, we’re also always looking for easy beaches for us to swim as a family. Maui definitely offers the most kid-friendly beaches, all located in spots that are easy to reach from most vacation accommodations.

2. Great, accessible snorkeling

One of our favorite activities is snorkeling, and Maui offers the most snorkeling options with some unbelievable fish and sea life. Here you have protected bays, (mostly) calm seas, crystal clear waters, and offers some of the best opportunities to snorkel with sea turtles.

Not only that, but you can also take a boat ride out to snorkel in a volcano crater or take a full day snorkeling trip to the island of Lanai. Plus, if you’re here during whale season, you’ll undoubtedly hear whales singing underwater or see them as you head out on a snorkeling kayak trip.

3. The best variety of places to stay

According to data from the visitor statistics from the Hawaii Tourism Authority , Maui is the second most visited island (after Oahu). Because Maui gets so many visitors, the options for accommodations are excellent and always growing.

If you want to stay at a luxury hotel, Maui has plenty of them. If you would rather stay at a budget-friendly beach hotel, you can find that here. Want a vacation rental with a private pool? Maui has plenty. Prefer to camp or glamp? Maui has a great option.

We think Maui has the biggest range of accommodations to fit every type of traveler. Whatever you’re looking for, you can likely find it on Maui.

4. A volcano

The big island isn’t the only island with a volcano you can visit. On Maui, you can make a day trip up to Haleakala to watch sunrise, sunset, or go hiking. It’s a great way to take in another side of Maui and learn how the island was formed. 

Plus, a visit to Haleakala is a great jumping-off point for exploring Maui’s upcountry — a place you definitely don’t want to miss.

5. Lush, quiet East Maui

If you want to escape the busy west and south sides of Maui (where a majority of the hotels and vacation rentals are), you can book a stay in Hana on east Maui. Yes, you’ll do the Road to Hana to get there, which is truly a trip you don’t want to miss. And yes, the road will be busy with other tourists making the trek to Hana. But most don’t stop in Hana for long, and very few stay the night. If you’re looking for a quiet place to spend your vacation, East Maui is the place. 

6. Excellent Food

We don’t want to be biased here, but we think that some of the best food options around are on Maui. You can eat locally caught fresh fish, grab a great meal at one of the many food trucks, or treat yourself to a night of fine dining. The range of options available on Maui is incredible.

And, we’re not the only ones who think Maui has the best food. On the TripAdvisor Traveler’s Choice list of best restaurants, Maui has three restaurants in the top 15 . No other Hawaii restaurants make the list.

7. Great weather

If you are coming for sun, head to Maui. Yes, all of the islands get their fair share of both sun and rain — and sun is never guaranteed here — but your chances of getting a sunny day are best on Maui.

The main resort areas are located on the leeward side of the island. The leeward side gets less rain and more sun. 

We plotted the rainfall for each of the main resort areas on each island in Hawaii, and on Maui, you get the least amount of rain. Ideal for your beach vacation: 

8. A quick trip to Lanai

While we think you’ll have more than enough to keep you busy on Maui, if you want to take a quick trip to another island, you can take a ferry ride to Lanai. It’s worth noting that to island hope between other islands (like Oahu and Kauai), you’ll need to fly. Lanai and Molokai are just a ferry ride away and can be done on an ambitious day trip or for a two to three-day excursion from Maui.

If you want an easier option for visiting Lanai, consider taking a day trip with a snorkeling boat. They’ll take you to the best spots, let you stop on Lanai for lunch and a quick hike, and hopefully, you’ll get a view of dolphins while you’re out there. It’s a full-day adventure, but it’s worth it.

9. The best whale watching

If you’re visiting Hawaii from mid-December through mid-April, you’re lucky enough to be here for whale watching season. Each year, as many as 12,000 humpback whales migrate from Alaska to Hawaii to give birth. And, Maui is one of the best islands for whale watching. The channel off the west side of Maui is shallow and the waters are warm, which is a perfect spot for whales to have their calf and prepare for the journey back to Alaska. 

If you’re here during whale watching season, you can take a boat tour (highly recommended) or you can easily see them from shore. We often find ourselves pulling over to the side of the road to watch the whales.

Why Maui Isn’t the Best Island for Your First Time

While overall we think Maui is the best option for first-timers, there are some times when the other islands will be a better option. 

• Oahu: Head to Oahu if you’re looking for nightlife, museums, plenty of history.
• Kauai: Visit Kauai if you’re looking for a quieter trip, a lush landscape (with a bit more rain), and amazing hiking.
• Big Island: Plan a trip to the Big Island if you’re a volcano enthusiast (Volcanoes National Park is amazing), or you want to snorkel or dive with manta rays .

Days 1-3: oahu highlights.

No matter what you're looking for in a vacation – adventure, relaxation, romance, cultural experiences, food – Hawaii has it all.

Every island has its own kind of vibe, from the laid-back serenity of Kauaʻi to the bustling beach towns of Maui. There are so many unique experiences , too, like hiking to an active volcano on Hawaiʻi Island and watching monster surf crash on Oʻahu's North Shore.

With so many options, here's a shortcut to the best experiences you can have in the Aloha State.

1. Waikiki, Oʻahu

Waikiki on Oʻahu's sunny south shore is the state's most famous resort town. Over the years, the neighborhood has evolved to be less kitschy and more authentic. Hotels offer lei-making classes in their open-air lobbies, and traditional hula is showcased on the tiki torch-lit hula mound on Kuhio Beach . Take surfing lessons from modern-day beach boys or indulge in afternoon tea at the historic Moana Surfrider . Some of the island's best restaurants are located in Waikiki, too.

Planning tip : The Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort has been putting on a fireworks show every Friday night since 1988 (bar the pandemic years). Bring a picnic dinner and find a spot on the beach to watch the skies light up. The show starts at 7:45pm during the winter and 8pm in the summer.

2. Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, Hawaiʻi Island

The 323,431-acre Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park on Hawaiʻi Island is a place unlike anywhere else in Hawaii (or the US). This is one of the few places in the world where you can drive up to safely view an active volcano. Kilauea , an active shield volcano, had been, up until 2018, continuously erupting and altering the landscape since 1983. It's currently not active , but that can change any day. The national park – one of five on the Big Island – stretches from sea level to the summit of the 13,679ft Mauna Loa , one of the largest volcanoes in the world. Trek along one of dozens of hiking routes in the park and see old lava flows and tubes, steam vents, and native trees and birds.

Detour : Stop at Volcano Village, a rustic town in the middle of a lush rainforest filled with native hapuʻu fern and 'ōhiʻa trees just outside the park. You can find quaint vacation rentals here, a handful of restaurants, a farmers market on Sundays, a small winery that sells locally produced wine, an orchid farm and the Volcano Art Center , a working arts studio and gallery.

3. The Island of Molokaʻi

Undeveloped and often overlooked, Molokaʻi offers some of the most unique experiences of any of the Hawaiian Islands. Spanning 38 miles long and 10 miles across at its widest point, this island – the fifth largest in Hawaii – is home to the world's tallest sea cliffs, the longest waterfall in the Islands and one of the state's largest white-sand beaches, Papohaku Beach . 

There are no big resorts or traffic lights here; instead, you'll find the windswept Moʻomomi Dunes, the 2744-acre Kamakou Preserve with its unique montane bog, and the secluded Kalaupapa Peninsula, once an isolated community of patients with Hansen's disease. Stop at Kanemitsu Bakery in Kaunakakai for freshly made Molokaʻi sweet bread right out of the oven.

4. Hana, Maui

The 53-mile Hana Highway – also known as the Road to Hana – is as scenic as it is winding. The road twists across 59 mostly one-lane bridges, along plunging cliffs, past waterfalls and around 620 turns to the unspoiled town of Hana on Maui's northeast coast. The drive itself – which can take several hours – is part of the journey. Once in Hana, enjoy hala tree-lined Hamoa Beach , sunbathe at Waiʻānapanapa State Park's black-sand beach, or hike to the 400ft Waimoku Falls in the Kīpahulu end of Haleakalā National Park . 

Planning tip : If you're planning to visit Waiʻānapanapa State Park,  you'll have to book reservations , which can be made up to 30 days in advance. It costs $5 per person and $10 for parking per non-commercial vehicle.

5. Nāpali Coast, Kauaʻi

The towering green cliffs of the fabled Nāpali Coast rise 2000ft from the ocean and stretch 15 miles along Kauaʻi's rugged northern coastline. You can experience these verdant valleys and razor-edged cliffs aboard a catamaran, on a kayak, from a helicopter or along the 11-mile Kalalau Trail.

Planning tip : To get to Keʻe Beach , the start of the Kalalau Trail, you'll need to make advance reservations to enter Hāʻena State Park. It costs $5 for out-of-state visitors to enter the park, $10 for each car.

6. North Shore, Oʻahu

In winter – from November to February – some of the world's best surfers (and thousands of spectators) flock to Oʻahu's North Shore and its 7 miles of famous breaks, from Banzai Pipeline to Sunset Beach . Once in a while, the waves are big enough (consistently larger than 40ft, measured from the front of the wave) at Waimea Bay to hold the prestigious, invite-only Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitation. Summer brings calmer ocean conditions, great for swimming and snorkeling. The colorful beach town of Haleʻiwa features cute boutiques, eateries and the famous Matsumoto Shave Ice shop.

Detour : To get a bird's-eye view of this famous coastline, take the 2-mile ʻEhukai Pillbox hike. The trail climbs the side of the northern Koʻolau Mountains to WWII bunkers that offer panoramic views of the entire North Shore coastline.

7. Haleakalā National Park, Maui

Catching the sunrise at the top of Haleakalā, a dormant volcano that rises to 10,023ft above sea level, is one of the most popular activities on Maui. Reservations are required for sunrise – and the fee doesn't include entrance into the national park – and can be hard to get. Consider viewing the sunset instead and staying for the night sky. The park also has numerous hiking trails through otherworldly landscapes and the chance to see the endangered ʻāhinahina (silversword) and nēnē (Hawaiian goose), the state bird.

Planning tip : The park offers pristine dark skies – with minimal light pollution – perfect for stargazing. Temperatures can drop quickly at the summit, so dress warmly and bring layers. You'll also want to bring your own snacks, as there are no food or drinks available in the park.

8. Hanalei, Kauaʻi

On Kauaʻi's quiet north shore is the sleepy town of Hanalei , marked by emerald green mountains, kalo loʻi (flooded taro fields) and some of the island's best beaches, including the breathtaking Hanalei Bay with its historic pier. Browse art galleries and boutiques, eat fresh poke from Hanalei Poke and plant-based taro doughnuts from Holey Grail, and walk around a farmers market.

Detour : About 2 miles west of Hanalei Bay is Lumahaʻi Beach , made famous by the 1958 classic film South Pacific . This is where Mitzi Gaynor spent her time "washing that man right out of her hair."

9. Maunakea, Hawaiʻi Island

Maunakea , or "white mountain," is, at 13,802ft above sea level, the world's tallest mountain when measured from its base. (More than half, or 19,698ft, of Maunakea lies underwater, making it 33,500ft from base to summit.) It's considered one of the most sacred of all Hawaiʻi volcanoes and is known by Native Hawaiians as a region of the gods. It's also a hub of astronomical observation with more than a dozen massive telescopes from around the world. You can book guided stargazing tours with outfitters like Hawaiʻi Forest & Trail .

Detour : In April,  Hilo , which is about 30 minutes west of Maunakea, hosts the annual Merrie Monarch Festival , a competitive hula festival featuring some of the state's best dancers and performers. You have to book tickets in advance to attend the event, but the craft show, which is a huge draw, is open to the public.

10. Pearl Harbor, Oʻahu

Known for the 1941 attack on the USS Arizona , which launched the US into WWII, Pearl Harbor draws millions of visitors each year to the memorial erected in honor of the 1102 men who are still entombed in the metal hull of the battleship. You can catch a boat to the USS Arizona Memorial , tour the aircraft hangars of the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum , and stand on the decks of the "Mighty Mo" battleship where Imperial Japan formally surrendered in 1945. Pearl Harbor was once known as Wai Momi, or pearl waters, because of its abundant oyster beds.

11. Upcountry Maui, Maui

On the slopes of Haleakalā are the quaint towns of Kula and Makawao, collectively known as Upcountry Maui. Up here, the air is crispier, and the vibe is slower. Pick fresh strawberries in season at Kula Country Farms , wander around the fragrant Aliʻi Kula Lavender Farm , or feed goats at Surfing Goat Dairy. This area is famous for its paniolo , or Hawaiian cowboys.

Detour : Not many visitors know that grapes are grown here. Open since 1974, MauiWine produces wines made from estate-grown grapes, pineapples and raspberries. Visit its tasting room at the picturesque ʻUlupalakua Ranch.

12. Waimea Canyon, Kauaʻi

Called the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific," Waimea Canyon, with its buttes, crags and earthen colors, stretches 10 miles long, is 1 mile wide and is more than 3600ft deep. Stop at the Waimea Canyon Lookout for sweeping views of the canyon and the 800ft Waipoʻo Falls . But you can also experience the canyon via numerous hiking trails, on horseback and from a helicopter. Any way you see it, it's breathtaking.

Detour : The best trails are located within the 4345-acre Kōkeʻe State Park . The cost is $5 per person (nonresident) and $10 per car. From the park, you can stop at the Kalalau Lookout at 4120ft above the Nāpali Coast, with commanding views of the lush, amphitheater-headed Kalalau Valley. Camping is available, and the restaurant is worth a stop (but note: it only serves breakfast and lunch.)

13. South Kona, Hawaiʻi Island

Head south from Kailua-Kona, and you'll be in coffee country. This area – Kaʻawaloa (Captain Cook), Hōnaunau, Kāʻu – is known for its high-quality coffee grown exclusively in this high elevation and volcanic soils on the slopes of Hualālai Volcano. There are hundreds of farms here, and many offer guided tours and free tastings. Hōlualoa is a small artsy town with cute shops. Kealakekua Bay in the region of Captain Cook provides some of the island's best snorkeling. And Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park is a sacred place of refuge that you wander on a half-mile walking tour.

Detour : In Keauhou, you can dive at night with the gentle manta rays that swim along this coastline. Seeing these graceful giants glide and twirl in the water with you is an experience you won't likely forget.

14. ʻIolani Palace, Oʻahu

Built in 1882 under King David Kalākaua, ʻIolani Palace in Downtown Honolulu is the only royal residence in the US. It took three years to complete at a cost of $343,595, with Hawaiʻi's first electric light system, flush toilets and intra-house telephones. The last two monarchs of the Hawaiian Kingdom – King Kalākaua and his sister and successor, Queen Liliʻuokalani – resided here until the overthrow of the kingdom in 1893. You can tour this American Florentine-style palace and see its throne rooms, dining rooms and the private living quarters of the royal family.

Detour : Walk to nearby Chinatown and browse the markets or eat at one of the many restaurants – ranging from Korean takeout to poke bowls to restaurants run by James Beard Award-winners and nominees – in this neighborhood.

15. Molokini, Maui

Three miles off shore from Wailea on Maui is Molokini Crater, known for its deep, crystal-clear waters teeming with marine life. This crescent-shaped islet is a marine preserve, home to more than 250 species of tropical fish. The only way to get to this popular snorkeling and diving site is by boat.

Planning tip : While the boat ride out to Molokini is typically smooth, the journey back can be tumultuous. If you're prone to seasickness, either sit in the center of the boat where it's more stable or take some motion-sickness remedies.

16. Kailua, Oʻahu

A quick 15-minute drive from Honolulu, Kailua seems like a world away. The beach town is built around Kailua Beach , a powdery-white stretch of sand that runs 2.5 miles long. People fish, surf, kayak, swim and paddle canoes in these waters. Nearby Lanikai Beach , with its unobstructed views of the Mokulua Islands, is another popular stop for beach lovers. It's smaller and more secluded than Kailua Beach, but often more crowded because of its reputation for calm waters and gorgeous vistas. The town itself boasts popular restaurants, boutiques, local breweries and a great locally-owned independent bookshop called Bookends.

Planning tip : Consider exploring Kailua town by bike. You can rent one from The Bike Shop . (There's no city-run bike-sharing on this side of the island.) The shop has a range of cruisers, mountain bikes and road bikes for rent, complete with helmets and bike locks. Electra cruises – the most popular bikes – start at $18 for up to four hours. You can book online and pick it up at the shop.

17. Old Lahaina Lūʻau, Maui

Open in 1986, the locally owned Old Lahaina Lūʻau on Maui has been a favorite lūʻau for decades, showcasing traditional hula , music and food. It's located right on the ocean off Front Street in Lahaina with great sunset views. Tickets include live entertainment, an open bar, historical storytelling and chanting, and an all-you-can-eat buffet with Hawaiian staples like lau lau, kālua pig, poi and poke .

18. Hanauma Bay, Oʻahu

This protected nature preserve in East Honolulu is one of the best spots to snorkel on Oʻahu . About 400 species of fish inhabit this bay, along with honu (Hawaiian green sea turtles) and the occasional endangered Hawaiian monk seal. There are restrictions for access to this popular bay: online reservations are required , and it costs $25 per person for non-Hawaii residents 13 years and older. Parking is another US$3 per car. The bay is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Planning tip : You can rent snorkel gear at the bay, so you don't have to lug your own. While you can walk down the steep road to the beach, you can also opt to take the free tram (we recommend that on the way back to your car).

Least known of all the Hawaiian Islands – and the smallest inhabited island – Lanaʻi is an ideal escape. Stay in luxurious resorts with world-class amenities fronting the beautiful and secluded Hulopoʻe Beach , a designated marine preserve filled with colorful fish and sometimes spinner dolphins. Or explore the rest of the island – the wild and windswept 8-mile Shipwreck Beach (complete with an actual shipwreck), the ancient fishing village of Kaunolū , or visit the strange landscape of Keahikawelo (Garden of the Gods).

Planning tip : If you want to venture outside the resorts of Lanaʻi City, you'll need to rent a four-wheel drive vehicle. There's no public transportation or ride-sharing on the island.

Oahu Itinerary – Day 1

There is no better way to spend your first time in Hawaii than by jumping right into the culture on your first day. Guests of the Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort can learn lei making from some of the staff.

All the supplies are provided, so you can make your own lei while learning about its cultural significance to the people of Hawaii.

After that, make your way to the Polynesian Cultural Center . It’s a bit expensive, but I highly recommend the tour that includes the luau and night show.

The Polynesian Culture Center is a place dedicated entirely to preserving the various traditions and cultures of the Polynesian countries.

The center consists of six different “villages,” each having various shows and activities to help visitors learn about their respective cultures.

At the luau, you get to eat some scrumptious, traditional Hawaiian food, and at the evening show, you get to see all of the villages come together to showcase their talents and traditions.

Despite being a large tourist attraction, Diamond Head is still a must for any Hawaii itinerary.

Despite the history that surrounds it, it offers breathtaking views of the bright blue ocean and the bustling city of Honolulu.

The hike to the top of Diamond Head is only 0.8 miles, but is quite steep and involves many steps. Make sure to get there early in the morning, as the parking lot will most likely fill up after 8 AM.

If the parking lot is full, you have to park down further and then hike up to the park entrance, which adds to your already strenuous hike.

If you’re a history buff or just a fan of the TV show Hawaii Five-O, swing by the famous statue of King Kamehameha (frequently shown in various scenes of Hawaii Five-O).

Hawaii was originally a monarchy under King Kamehameha, who was known for uniting all the Hawaiian islands into one nation and ending the conflict that had existed among them. Across the street from the statue is Iolani Palace, the royal residence of the monarch family.

End the day with a relaxing afternoon on the popular Waikiki beach.

It will likely be crowded, but it should still be possible to find your own little spot on the sand to sit back and relax.

It’s a must-visit beach for your first trip to Hawaii. If you’re feeling cliché, you can try and write something memorable in the sand before the water comes up and washes it away!

On Friday nights, you can even see fantastic firework shows held out over the water.

Oahu Itinerary – Day 3

At first glance, day 3 of this Hawaii itinerary seems a little jam-packed with activities, but it is easily do-able even at a slow pace. However, it’s another early morning so make sure you get to bed at a decent time and grab the best breakfast in Waikiki before heading out for the day.

Pearl Harbor is another one of those must-visit places for a Hawaii itinerary, if only for the historical significance.

The bombing of Pearl Harbor is what ultimately brought the United States into World War II, and its importance in US history makes it quite interesting, even for those who aren’t overly excited about history.

“December 7, 1941 — a date which will live in infamy” – President Franklin D. Roosevelt

The main attraction at Pearl Harbor, a tour of the USS Arizona, is free, but still requires a ticket (as they limit the number of entries per day). Tickets are available for reservation in advance but are quickly snatched up.

If you don’t manage to reserve a ticket, don’t fret. 1,300 walk-up tickets are available daily. However, the tickets are first-come-first-serve, so make sure to get there early to ensure that you get a ticket.

If you are particularly interested in history, you can check out some of the other attractions at Pearl Harbor, such as the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park, the Battleship Missouri Memorial and Pacific Aviation Museum, and guided tours of the USS Missouri. If not, head on over to the Dole Plantation.

It may not sound really exciting at first, but Dole Plantation is a great place for people of all ages.

The plantation’s garden is home to several unique tropical plants and offers several informational posts along the way to help you learn more about the plantation and its history.

If you feel like you have strong directional skills/enjoy getting lost, you can attempt to make your way through the pineapple, one of the world’s largest, permanent mazes.

After you’ve tired of wandering around the maze, you can catch a ride on the pineapple express train tour.

If you’ve never been to Japan, I recommend fitting a stop at Byodoin Temple into your Hawaii itinerary. It’s a replica of the original Byodo-in Temple in Japan and commemorates the first Japanese immigrants to Hawaii.

It’s a great introduction to Japanese culture. Plus, it’s a filming location of Hawaii Five-O, Lost, and Magnum, P.I.

There’s no better way to end a busy day than relaxing on a beach. Instead of Waikiki, head over to the less-crowded Lanikai Beach, which is often ranked one the best beaches in Oahu.

The bright white sand beach and endless blue water is definitely a reminder of why many people call Hawaii “paradise.”

While I’m recommending three days, you could spend ages exploring Oahu ! But let’s hop over to the next island…

Kauai Itinerary – Day 4

If you love to just relax by a beach that is crowded by tourists or go on adventurous hikes, you could easily spend a week in Kauai. However, when trying to see the best of Hawaii in one week, Kauai can be done in a day.

Make sure to catch an early flight on Hawaiian Airlines to Kauai, and have a rental car reserved and ready for you so you can hit the ground running.

Kauai is known for its famous Na Pali coast, some of the tallest sea cliffs in the world.

If nothing else, I recommend doing a tour with the Na Pali Experience to get breathtaking views of the towering cliffs. Most of the tour groups will even take you inside many of the sea caves if the water isn’t too rough.

At the end of the tour, you can go snorkeling by some of the large reefs, and if you’re lucky you can even see some dolphins or sea turtles. Personally, this was my favorite stop along my Hawaii itinerary.

If you have some time before or after the tour, I highly recommend checking out Waimea Canyon . Unlike some canyons that have more of a desert feel, this canyon is quite colorful with its shades of red, brown, and green.

Head to one of the lookout points to get a good view from the top of 3,600 feet deep canyon and maybe even catch a rainbow across one of the many waterfalls found within.

If you have more time, it would be worth hanging out and learning more about the culture and legends of Kauai and even tackling the Kalepa Ridge Trail .

Depending on how rough the waters were during your Na Pali tour, you’ll want a day to just relax and recover. Even those who don’t normally have problems with motion sickness were feeling a little seasick the day after. 

In the morning, catch a flight to the island of Hawaii (often referred to as “The Big Island” so as not to confuse it with the state of Hawaii) and pick up another rental car near Kona airport. The Big Island is the largest of islands (surprise!), so you’ll definitely want a car to get around.

The Big Island is home to large number of incredible Hawaii tree houses , you should definitely consider staying in one during your time here.

If you don’t get claustrophobic, consider reserving a spot with Atlantis Adventures for a submarine tour.

Once you board the submarine, take a seat in front of one of the many porthole windows, then sit back and relax as the submarine cruises along the bottom of the ocean.

It reaches depths of about 110 feet and gives views of the various sea life that call Hawaii their home and you can even see some of the shipwrecks found in the area.

After the tour, head over to Punalu’u Beach , also known as Black Sand Beach.

The black color comes from lava fragments of the nearby volcano and really stands out next to the beautiful blue of the ocean. Check ahead of time to see whether or not swimming is permitted, as the currents can sometimes be quite strong.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a must if you’ve never gotten to see a volcano up close and personal. I was only at the park for an afternoon, but I very much regret not setting aside an entire day to check out this wonderful place.

The park is quite large and has two main self-guided driving tours: The Crater Rim Drive Tour and Chain of Craters Road. If you have the time, I recommend doing both, as each has unique sights to see.

Attractions along the driving tours include Jagger Museum (which overlooks the ongoing eruption within Halema’uma’u crater), walking through lava tubes (a cave formed from rushing lava), and more.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can make the long trek to see surface lava.

It’s about a 10-mile hike round trip, and half of it is over boulder-sized lava rock, so it’s definitely not for the faint of heart. However, how many people can say that they saw lava up close and personal?

If you decide to take on the challenge, make sure to be prepared.

Wear good shoes and bring a large bottle of water. If you intend to go at night (because it’s really cool to see the lava lit up on the mountainside at night), bring a heavy-duty flashlight. Your cell phone flashlight will not be enough.

Also, be aware that you will likely lose cell phone service.

The Big Island Itinerary – Day 7

Rainbow Falls is definitely worth a stop, and it’s so close to Hilo that it’s not out of the way no matter what your plans are for the day.

The majestic waterfall runs over a cliffside and crashes down into a large crater.

From the parking lot, you can stand at the railing and look out at the waterfall. Then take the short pathway and get a view from the top of the waterfall.

Before catching your flight home, make one last stop at the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens. The garden has beautiful views of the ocean, an impressive waterfall, and over 2,000 species of plants.

If you’re not from a tropical area or don’t visit often, it can definitely be interesting to see the unique plant life not found in other parts of the world.

I stayed in a total of three different hotels. While I was on the island of Oahu, I stayed in a hotel on Waikiki Beach. I stayed one night in a hotel in Kauai, and then the rest of the time was spent in a hotel in Kona on the Big Island.

If you are constantly rushing to get to the next fun activity, you won’t truly experience Hawaii at its best. Take the time to slow down and enjoy your journey, whatever comes your way. 

Plus, it’s great to leave some flexibility in your schedule in case an activity needs to be rescheduled due to weather.

2. Go to One Island 

When going to Hawaii for the first time, you will want to stay on one island. This is especially true if you are going for a week or less. Island hopping is fun, but it does take time, and you won’t get to experience the islands to their fullest by constantly switching places. 

Instead, choose one island and stay there the entire time! You will be able to relax more, enjoy the beauty surrounding the island, and have fun exploring all the activities available on that one island. 

Oahu is a pretty popular island for first-time Hawaii visitors. That’s because it’s home to Pearl Harbor , Diamond Head , and Waikiki . Maui is popular for people who don’t want to go to Oahu, but want some nightlife and cool excursions.

3. Do Your Own Tours 

One easy way to plan a Hawaii trip is to do your own tours. Circle island tours are great and show many great features of the entire island, but this is something you can easily do yourself with no time limit when you rent a car. 

Create your own tour and choose different places you want to explore all around the island. This will make your first time to Hawaii a much better experience as you get to decide everything you do instead of leaving that in other people’s hands. 

The only time I DO recommend a circle island tour for first-timers is if you are on Oahu and aren’t renting a car. Then, you’ll want to do a Hawaii Bucket List tour . You get to pick where you go and leave the driving (and sometimes dicey parking) to the professionals.

4. Prepare for the Time Difference 

Depending on where you live, there will be a significant time difference when you arrive, leaving you feeling jet lag.

Remember to factor that into your plans, as you might end up being too exhausted to do something at night for the first two days. You’ll definitely want to hold off doing a luau or night adventure until later in your trip.

5. Visit During the Off-Season

You can take a trip to Hawaii any time, and you will be greeted with warm, sunny beaches. However, if you visit during the off-season, you can save your money and have fewer crowds around you while you explore. 

The off-season of Hawaii is usually the wintertime or any month that doesn’t involve a holiday. During the winter, you can expect a little bit more rain and cooler weather at night, but nothing extremely different from the summer in Hawaii. 

6. Use Reef-Safe Sunscreen

You don’t want to hurt the sealife during your first trip to Hawaii. Respect the island, the people, and the ocean life by using reef-safe sunscreen! 

A lot of traditional sunscreens have so many harmful chemicals not just for humans but also for marine life. Hawaii has actually banned any sunscreen that is not reef-safe to further protect the environment. 

There are four main ingredients banned in Hawaii, which include oxybenzone, octinoxate, 4-methyl benzylidene camphor, and butylparaben. 

Blue Lizard, Sun Bum or Maui Vera are great options for adults. If you aren’t sure what sunscreen to bring, you can always buy one during your stay there at Long Drugs, Foodland, or Walmart. 

7. Try the Local Food

Hawaiian food is absolutely delicious! Don’t be afraid to try any, especially from food trucks. You can find Hawaiian plate lunches, fish tacos, and garlic shrimp on all the islands.

Insider tip: Grab some poke (raw fish) from Foodland as soon as you arrive because you will probably want to eat it every day while you are on the island!

8. Clean Up After Yourself 

Hawaii is a beautiful place you do not want to leave messy. Be respectful to the people and island and clean up after yourself. If you see trash on the beach or side of the road, clean it up, even if it isn’t yours. 

Taking care of the earth is a huge part of Hawaiian culture, so make sure to respect it during your trip. Malama the aina.

9. Embrace the Culture 

One of the best tips for visiting Hawaii for the first time would be to fully embrace the culture. Eat all the local food you can find, visit the museums, learn about the people and culture, and talk to locals about their lives. 

Learn as much as you possibly can about Hawaii, and you will love Hawaii in a totally new way. It makes your visit more special, and it’ll help you embrace the aloha lifestyle in your own life too! 

10. Go On a Hike

The hikes on each island of Hawaii are magnificent. You will want to try at least one hike during your first visit to Hawaii, even if it is short.

Going on a hike will help you enjoy being in the beautiful luscious green nature and a stunning view of the ocean surrounding you when you reach the top.

11. Do Not Touch the Turtles

While it may seem like the perfect bucket-list item, it is actually illegal to touch Hawaii’s sea turtles. You can take a picture of them from a short distance but do not touch them. 

The government protects the sea turtles, so do not do anything that can disturb them. Do your part to protect the green sea turtles! 

12. Learn a Few Hawaiian Words 

You probably know aloha, but do you know any other Hawaiian words? Here are a few of the most common ones: 

• Mahalo: thank you 
• Poke: raw ahi tuna 
• Ohana: family 
• Kamaaina: local 

Many items at a restaurant might use Kamaaina and Keiki, so be sure to learn at least these words, so you understand what is going on around. If you aren’t sure, don’t be afraid to ask either!

Best Hawaiian Islands to Visit

Hawai’i island.

Also commonly known as “The Big Island,” Hawaii island is the best place to visit in Hawaii if you’re looking for action, fun and diverse outdoor adventures. With 10 of the world’s 14 climate zones, it is known for its active volcanoes, beaches, waterfalls, cultural sites, colored-sand beaches and world-class snorkeling.

There are two active volcanoes – Kīlauea and Mauna Loa — in Hilo. This unique park has hiking trails, steam vents, a rainforest and guided tours. The sunny Kona side is great for beach activities such as snorkeling and stand-up paddling. The nighttime manta ray snorkel tour is unique to the island. It’s a magical experience floating on top of the water in a calm bay, with bright lights drawing the rays who swirl below.

More island attractions include Mauna Kea (the tallest mountain in the world) and Akaka State Falls. A Hawaii helicopter tour is well worth the splurge.

The fourth largest island in Hawaii, Kauai is also known as “the Garden Island.” As its name suggests, it is the best place to visit in Hawaii for nature lovers and those who enjoy a relaxed and laid-back atmosphere. The island’s mountains and valleys are lush and green, flowing with waterfalls and rivers.

Kauai is home to a number of outdoor activities including water and land sports. You can easily spend the day kayaking, snorkeling, fishing, horseback riding or hiking the trails of Kokee State Park. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can go ziplining above Kauai’s beautiful and lush valleys. Or, join a helicopter tour and see Jurassic Falls, the majestic setting where the 1993 Jurassic Park movie was filmed. The Manawaiopuna Falls (its official name) was the backdrop for the scene when the visitors first arrived on the island.

In the small town of Hanalei, you can spend some time on the beach, practice your surfing skills or do some sightseeing and bird watching.

The island of Maui is the best place to visit in Hawaii for families, especially if you enjoy driving and exploring.

Maui is popular for its Road to Hana (more on this must-do attraction later), as well as Haleakala, a dormant volcano. At 10,023 feet above sea level, the summit is an ideal place to catch a stunning sunrise or sunset. However, It can be chilly at the top, so you may want to bring a jacket or sweater!

Situated on Haleakala’s lower slopes in Kula are two unique farms worth visiting. At the Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm, you can walk through lavender fields. A peaceful place, the farm offers tours and lavender products. Nearby, the Surfing Goat Dairy Farm produces award-winning cheeses. On the kid-friendly tours, you’ll feed goats and sample cheese.

The town of Kahului is the place to go if you want to be with the locals and eat where they eat. It’s also a great place to go shopping for authentic Hawaiian trinkets and souvenirs. SheBuysTravel contributor Deb Steenhagen especially recommends the Ka’anapali Beach in Maui for families and beginners who are new to surfing and want to give it a try.

Oahu (North Shore)

Home to the state capital of Honolulu, Oahu has some of Hawaii’s best beaches for families as well as urban amenities. SheBuysTravel contributor Mimi Slawoff feels that Oahu is the best place to visit in Hawaii for first-time visitors since it is typically the easiest to reach and the most affordable for family travel. Plus it offers everything from urban adventures to laid-back island vibes.

Top things to do on Oahu include visiting the North Shore’s world-renowned surfing spots Waimea Bay, Banzai Pipeline and Sunset Beach. Haleiwa, a laid-back surf town, is a fun place to stop for shaved ice and local artwork. Oahu is also known for having some of the best farmers’ markets.

Learning to surf is one of the first things to do on Oahu. It’s a big part of Hawaiian culture. So you’ve got to try it at least once while in Hawaii. Group surf lessons by Surfer Girl Academy are available for those over the age of 12.

Nicknamed the “Pineapple Island”, Lana’i was once home to a plantation that produced 75% of the world’s pineapples. Today it is one of the best places to visit in Hawaii if you want a mix of serenity and adventure.

As one of the smallest inhabited Hawaii islands, Lana’i has incredible snorkeling opportunities as well as views of the Molokai and Maui islands. On the north side of the island sits Shipwreck Beach, popular for its offshore wreck of a WWII tanker.  The secluded Polihua Beach is the best place to spot green turtles and the occasional humpback whale off of the coast.

If you’re into exploring the rugged back roads, a four-wheel drive vehicle will get you access to many off-the-beaten-path treasures. The Garden of the Gods can be found inland, presenting a lunar landscape of rock towers and boulders.

The most undeveloped accessible Hawaiian island, Molokai is a true getaway. Here, you’ll find empty beaches and 30 miles of reef with abundant marine life. The island is mostly populated by native Hawaiians. While they’re protective of their land, they welcome visitors.

There’s only one two-lane highway stretching across the small island, and Molokai doesn’t have a major resort, shopping centers or traffic lights. The small, rustic town of Kaunakakai has places to stock up for supplies.

SheBuysTravel contributor Mimi Slawoff visited with her family and believes that Molokai is one of the best places to visit in Hawaii for couples seeking an intimate island experience as well as families who enjoy authentic excursions led by locals. Some of her favorite activities were snorkeling, taking a cultural hike in Halawa Valley and swimming in the pond beneath Mo`oula Falls.

On the northern tip of the island sits Kalaupapa National Historical Park, accessible only by mule ride, hiking or commuter plane. There you’ll find steep and sheer cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean – in fact, they’re some of the tallest sea cliffs in the world!

Best Attractions to Visit:

The capital of the state, Honolulu is one of the best places to visit in Hawaii for historic landmarks, world-class shopping, nightlife and mouth-watering dining options.

Honolulu is home to some of Oahu’s most historic places such as the Pearl Harbor site and USS Arizona Memorial. Honolulu is also where you’ll find the incredible Diamond Head volcanic crater and the world-famous Waikiki Beach. In the downtown district, you’ll also find important Hawaii landmarks such as the Iolani Palace , the King Kamehameha I statue , the Kawaiahao Church and the Aloha Tower . While you’re there, don’t pass up the opportunity to attend a traditional Polynesian luau !

If you’re into deep-sea fishing, white sand beaches, historic landmarks and coffee farms, the town of Kailua-Kona (also known as Kona) is one of the best places to visit in Hawaii to satisfy those interests. Kona is also where King Kamehameha spent his final years.

Located on the Big Island, Kona is famous for its 100% Kona coffee. Kona has several coffee farms, like Greenwell Farms and Mountain Thunder, where you can walk through a typical 1920s farmhouse, tour the grounds and learn about the coffee growing process. Costumed interpreters demonstrate several traditional crafts, agricultural activities and the everyday tasks of people from the past. If you happen to visit on a Thursday, it’s worth stopping by the nearby Greenwell Store Museum to watch the traditional art of baking Portuguese bread in a large wood-fired forno.

An underwater submarine adventure is a fun way to explore Kona’s beautiful marine life and snap some National Geographic-worthy pics!

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Located in Hilo, the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is one of the best places in Hawaii to visit for an up close and personal look at real, active volcanoes with glowing, oozing lava flows.

SheBuysTravel contributor Keri Baugh visited Hawaii Volcanoes National Park with her kids and says that it is a must-do trip on the Big Island of Hawaii. However, it is a full-day trip, so you will want to plan ahead. In her words, “It is not necessarily a splurge in terms of cost, but it is a splurge in terms of time.” There are several guided tours to the park that will take you to the area and also provide your meals.

At the Kīlauea Visitor Center you’ll learn more about what to see and where to go, as well as receive information about ranger-led tours, trails, and safety information. While at the park, you can walk through the Thurston lava tube, hike the Kilauea Iki Trail, check out the bottom of the Halemaumau crater and view breathtaking sunsets from the Jagger Museum with the crater’s flume glowing red from the lava lake beneath.

Na’Pali Coast State Wilderness Park

Located in Kauai, the Na’Pali Coast State Wilderness Park is one of the best places to visit in Hawaii for adventurous visitors who love hiking, snorkeling and beautiful views. It is known for its towering sea cliffs, narrow valleys and cascading waterfalls.

The Na’Pali Coast is home to the Kalalau Trail, an approximately 11-mile-long trail that has been named one of the most beautiful and dangerous hikes in the United States. Getting to the coast is very challenging and takes a full day. It is also a very popular area for backpacking and camping.

SheBuysTravel contributor Mimi Slawoff’s favorite activities on the Napali Coast are sailing and snorkeling amongst the sea caves. In her opinion, it’s the best way to see Hawaii’s cute spinner dolphins who jump out of the water vertically and spin like a top before diving back into the ocean.

Waikiki Beach

If you’re staying in Honolulu and are in search of a beautiful yet accessible beach, Waikiki Beach is the place to be. Waikiki is a lively beachfront urban oasis with a range of hotels, shops, restaurants and entertainment. It’s also a great family-friendly beach area with typically gentle surf.

Waikiki Beach is calm, which makes it ideal for surfing and stand-up paddling. It’s also a great place to do some whale-watching, take a sunset tour or catch an underwater submarine tour that dives 100 feet underwater to explore artificial reefs.

Waikiki also has several indoor attractions worth visiting such as the Waikiki Aquarium, Honolulu Zoo and Iolani Palace. The nearby Bishop Museum is a cool place to explore Hawaii’s history. Housing thousands of historical and cultural artifacts, the museum has shows and interactive activities sure to impress visitors of all ages.

Diamond Head State Monument

One of Hawaii’s most recognized landmarks, Diamond Head State Monument is a volcanic cone on the island of Oahu known for its historic hiking trail, stunning and panoramic coastal views and military history. It encompasses over 475 acres, including the interior and outer slopes of the crater.

There aren’t many places in the world where you can walk along a trail to the edge of a 300,000-year-old crater, but Diamond Head is one of them. However, if you go (whether alone or via a guided tour ), you’ll want to allow up to two hours for the 1.6-mile round-trip hike. Although not difficult, the trail is uneven at times. Plus, you’ll walk through a tunnel and climb 99 steps at the end! However, the trek is worth the panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and Honolulu.

Haleakala National Park

Located on the island of Maui, Haleakala National Park is home to the dormant Haleakalā Volcano and endangered Hawaiian geese. Haleakala means “house of the sun” in Hawaiian, and legend has it that the demigod Maui lassoed the sun from its journey across the sky as it stood on the volcano. From there he was able to slow its descent to make the day last even longer. The park sits 10,023 feet above sea level, providing breathtaking views from all angles.

If there’s one national park that you’ll want to get up early and take a guided sunrise tour for, this is it. In fact, it is known to be one of the best places in Hawaii for watching spectacular, unforgettable sunrises. After the sunrise, you can spend some time exploring the park, admiring the seven-mile-wide crater and watching for the nene goose, Hawaii’s state bird.

Pearl Harbor

Located west of Honolulu, Pearl Harbor is the site of the WWII’s 1941 bombing attack. It’s home to the USS Arizona Memorial. The attack on Pearl Harbor is one of the defining moments in United States and world history. You can explore on your own or go with a travel guide via a guided tour . However, since it is a very popular attraction, you’ll want to reserve your tickets well in advance online. If taking the self-guided Pearl Harbor tour, plan to arrive by 7 a.m. with everyone in your group present.

Tickets for the 75-minute USS Arizona Memorial program are free. However, there’s a limited number available each day. The program includes a short video (with actual attack footage) and a round-trip boat ride to the USS Arizona Memorial. Dedicated to those who lost their lives there, the memorial is located above the remains of the sunken ship, the final resting place for more than 1,000 men.

Waimea Canyon State Park

Nicknamed the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”, the Waimea Canyon State Park is a 10-mile long, 3,000-foot deep canyon on the western side of Kauai island. Although not as big or old as the famous Grand Canyon in Arizona, it is just as amazing and offers beautiful vistas of crested buttes and rugged red rocks.

The main Waimea Canyon Overlook offers dramatic views of Kauai’s interior, while the main road, Waimea Canyon drive, takes you into Kokee State Park. There are several hiking trails for all skill levels, however, a helicopter tour is also a popular way to view the canyon and its waterfalls.

Road to Hana

The Road to Hana is the crown jewel of Hawaii driving tours and a must-do on the island of Maui. With lush rainforest, dramatic and rugged ocean vistas, countless waterfalls and pools, it makes for one of the most memorable and scenic drives while in Hawaii. Along the way, you’ll see waterfalls, black sand beaches and the charming town of Hana.

SheBuysTravel contributor Mimi Slawoff recommends getting up before dawn to get an early start. While the drive is just 52 miles long, with its 620 curves and 59 narrow bridges, it can easily turn the trip into a few hours long. Instead of driving yourself, you may also opt to do a full-day guided tour .

Hanauma Bay National Preserve

Known for its snorkeling, Hanauma Bay National Preserve is one of the best places to visit in Hawaii for exploring the island’s coral reef and diverse marine life. Nestled on the side of Koko Head, it’s roughly a 30-minute drive from Honolulu and offers a wonderful break from the hustle and bustle of the city.

With lush, green hills and beautiful blue waters, Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is a great place to snorkel and see its 400 species of fish and abundance of green sea turtles (honus).  Formed within a volcanic cone, Hanauma Bay is a protected marine life conservation area. Before snorkeling, you’re required to watch a short video about protecting marine life. If possible, aim to get there in the morning.

Kaanapali Beach

Located in the historic town of Lahaina, this family-friendly resort area on the west side of Maui is home to a variety of beachfront hotels , terrific family-friendly restaurants and amazing sunsets. With three miles of white sand and crystal clear water, it is one of the best places to visit in Hawaii for a relaxing, yet fun beach getaway.

In addition to its beach itself, its daily sunset cliff diving ceremony from the Black Rock cliff, Puu Kekaa, is one of the beach’s most popular attractions. Ziplining is a popular activity for getting your adrenaline fix while soaring over the breathtaking coastline. Just in front of the beach is the open-air shopping complex, Whaler’s Village. There you’ll find a variety of shops and restaurants, entertainment and a renowned whaling museum.

Kauai Botanical Gardens

Kauai is known as “the Garden Isle” for a reason. There you can find three of the nation’s five National Tropical Botanical Gardens on Kauai: Allerton Garden and McBryde Garden on the South Shore and Limahuli Garden in Haena. It is certainly one of the best places to visit in Hawaii if you love nature, greenery and gardens.

The largest collection of Hawaiian flora in the world can be found in McBryde Garden while beautiful landscaping and the Jurassic Park-famous Moreton Bay fig trees can be found in Allerton Garden. Limahuli Garden is home to endangered native plants, taro-filled agricultural terraces and striking views of the Kauai North Shore.

Other botanical gardens include the Na Aina Kai Botanical Gardens, Smith’s Tropical Paradise Botanical Garden and the Kauai Coffee Plantation.

Wailea is a luxurious resort community in South Maui known for its beautiful, crescent-shaped beaches and world-class golf courses. It is one of the best places to visit in Hawaii if what you’re looking for is peace, privacy and relaxation.

One of the most popular and beautiful places to visit is Wailea Beach, once named “America’s Best Beach” in 1999. Polo Beach is great for swimming and snorkeling, while Ulua Beach park is a great place to get in your morning or evening walk or job. Wailea also has great trails for hiking and viewing lava fields. In town, there are plenty of opportunities for shopping and entertainment with world-class shops, spas, restaurants and popular area events.

Polynesian Cultural Center

The Polynesian Cultural Center is one of the best places to visit in Hawaii if you want to truly feel the aloha spirit. The park features six island villages representing Hawai‘i, Samoa, Tahiti, Tonga, Fiji and Aotearoa (New Zealand).

At this Polynesian-themed park and living museum, you’ll be fully immersed in each of the Pacific cultures as natives share their traditions through music, dance and activities. You’ll learn to throw a wooden spear, paddle a canoe and cook like a Polynesian. In the Umu Making Experience, you’ll learn how to cook the Samoan way. Besides cooking the food, you’ll also learn how to weave utensils, start a fire and heat rocks.

The center also has family-friendly luaus with a variety of mouthwatering, traditional food. For example, the luau features foods such as lomilomi salmon, chicken long rice and kalua pork.

Waipio Valley Lookout

Located on the Hamakua Coast, the Waipio Valley Lookout is one of the most popular places to visit on the Big Island and one of the best places to visit in Hawaii for striking views of its coastline. This beautiful valley is marked by cliffs of up to 2,000 feet high, waterfalls, taro fields and rivers.

Also named “The Valley of the Kings” Waipio Valley isn’t just about its incredible views. It is also an important site for Hawaiian history and culture, once the home of thousands of Native Hawaiians. Now, there are less than 100 residents who live there.

Note: Waipio Valley Road has been closed to visitors since February 25, 2022. halting all tourist and volunteer activities and prohibiting hiking access to the black sand beaches for non-residents. However, the lookout point can still be accessed.

1. Stay on One Hawaiian Island

When people hear you are “going to Hawaii” for the first time, you will almost always get asked, “which islands are you visiting?”

In the past, when airfare was cheap and regulations were lax, it was easy to visit two or three different islands in a single week-long Hawaii vacation.

Today, however, you are better to decide which island you want to go to and enjoy that one, exploring its unique wonders, and then plan a return trip.

In many ways, Hawaii is a paradox. While it is a series of islands, people underestimate how big the state is as well as how big and diverse the individual islands are as well.

For instance, on a visit to “ The Big Island ,” you can experience a tropical jungle on the east side, an arid desert on the west, grasslands to the north, and some of the tallest mountains in the United States in the middle.

A similar diversity can be found on the other islands, both in terms of geography as well as culture, and food.

As a result, while “ island hopping ” might be a fun concept, there’s really no need to do it since you can visit one Hawaiian island and never see all of it even on a week-long Hawaiian vacation.

2. Try the Local Food When You Visit Hawaii for the First Time

When you visit Hawaii, you’ll want to try the local food. On my first visit to Hawaii, I quickly fell in love with poke.

This delicious dish consists of tuna or another type of seafood chopped up and marinated with spices, sauces, and vegetables. You can get a variety of poke, whether you’re looking for a spicy one or a sweeter poke.

You’ll never find fresher poke than when you’re visiting Hawaii, as many times the fish is caught that morning.

When I visited the Big Island , I stopped at Da Poke Brothers almost daily. You typically eat this with rice and sides like seaweed salad or macaroni salad.

I also recommend stopping at a small, local restaurant to try poke instead of eating it at a chain restaurant. You’ll get the experience of talking to the owners and learning more about the business that you’re supporting while on your Hawaii vacation.

3. Don’t Go to a Luau on Your First Night

For most first-time visitors to Hawaii, going to a luau is high on their bucket list! It’s a great opportunity to see parts of traditional Hawaiian culture and eat wonderful food.

Luau tickets aren’t cheap, so you’ll want to make the most of the experience.

One way to make sure you really enjoy your first luau is to schedule it for the end of your time in Hawaii.

No matter where you’re coming from, you’ll face a big time change when you go to Hawaii – 2-3 hours for west coasters and a whopping 5-6 hours for east coasters depending on the time of year!

Since most luaus don’t end until late at night, if you buy tickets for the beginning of your Hawaii vacation you’ll feel like a zombie before the first hula is over.

So do yourself a favor: plan your luau as a way to celebrate the end of your trip to Hawaii, not the beginning.

4. Use Reef Safe Sunscreen

When visiting Hawaii for the first time, one thing you’ll need to know is to use reef-safe sunscreen.

What is one of the very best things about visiting Hawaii? That amazing Pacific Ocean you get to swim in! The beautiful blue waters, colorful fish, sea turtles, and all of that coral reef that you find everywhere around the islands.

However, when you are snorkeling or scuba diving , you need to make sure to protect the reef by using the correct sunscreen.

Many sunscreens you buy and bring to Hawaii have an ingredient called oxybenzone in them, which is very harmful to the coral reef systems in Hawaii. The chemical bleaches the reefs, ridding them of their color, and sometimes die altogether.

Most sunscreens you can purchase on the islands are reef safe, however it is best to make sure. In addition, if you are on a scuba or snorkel excursion, many times they will offer reef safe sunscreen for free.

All in all, one of the best things you can do in Hawaii is get out into the water and see the beautiful coral reef. Just make sure that you are using reef safe sunscreen when you are getting into that beautiful water!

5. Research Beaches Before You Go

On your first trip to Hawaii, I’d be willing to bet that heading to the beach is at the very top of your agenda. And if you’re traveling to Hawaii with kids , I’m sure they can’t wait to play in the waves!

While beaches all over the islands can look peaceful and serene, it is imperative that you understand that Hawaii’s position in the ocean makes for unique and dangerous conditions.

Do some research before you get to the island to determine the most family-friendly beaches, and stick with those.

One of my personal favorites is Lydgate Beach on Kauai , with two protected swimming lagoons. Opt for lifeguarded beaches, and always check the beach warning signs when you get there.

It sounds great to just wander out and find a serene, secluded stretch of sand somewhere, but there are often hidden dangers that continental beaches just don’t have to contend with. This doesn’t just go for families with kids – adults need to be equally cautious!

Hawaiian beaches are incredible, and should absolutely be the first thing you do when you get to the island! But be smart about water safety and have a plan for where to swim.

6. Always Check the Weather Before Hiking

Before going on any hike, it is very important to check the weather and floodplains. If there is a possibility of rain, look to see if your hike goes through a floodplain or crosses any rivers.

If it does, there is a chance for a rapid rise in water levels or water overflowing into the area you are hiking.

When visiting a friend on Oahu , we did a spur-of-the-moment hike and didn’t look to see if it would rain. Partway through our hike, we got caught in heavy downpour. We didn’t mind and decided to keep going.

Unfortunately, the rain didn’t stop and we didn’t realize how wide the rivers were that we needed to cross.

When we reached the first river, we didn’t think we were too far from the end and decided to cross instead of going back up and down the mountain, which we felt would be too dangerous since it had been raining heavily for hours by this point.

It was above our knees.  We soon reached the second river, which we could see rising rapidly from all the rain.

It was very scary and taught us to always check weather and floodplains before doing any hike.

7. Do Your Own Circle Island Tour of Oahu

If you are visiting Hawaii and most likely Oahu for the first time, enjoy your visit to Honolulu and Waikiki and that part of paradise.

But if you really want to get a flavor of the entire island, go on a circle island tour . Or better yet, rent a car and do your own circle island tour, which is a fantastic way to experience the best and rest of the island.

On a tour, you can choose where you want to go, the attractions that appeal to you or just do a fantastic drive with coastal views and find some nice scenic spots along the way to enjoy and photograph.

You can visit popular attractions including Pearl Harbor , the Dole Plantation , Haleiwa , and the North Shore area with the Banzai pipeline, Sharks cove and into the gorgeous eastern coastlines.

Along the way there, you can visit the Mormon temple, Byodo-In Temple and the stunning beaches at Lanikai and Kailua beach . It’s up to you to pick and choose what you want to do and see.

8. Take a North Shore Tour

With just three days in Oahu, I was overwhelmed with the tens of things to see and do with so little time.

I wanted to see the best of Oahu’s North Shore without the hassle of renting a car, traffic, and parking.

Instead, I packed a dry bag with a bikini, snorkel set, and sturdy shoes and hopped on the Surf Bus, a small group tour that stops at a handful of places around Oahu rather than at every noteworthy destination.

Rather than being stuck on a bus all day, I had plenty of time to snorkel , hike , and go on a kayaking excursion. The day ended with a heaping pile of shave ice .  

A North Shore tour of Oahu with just a few stops is the best way to make the most of a short stay in Oahu.

Or, if you’re planning to stay a while, it’s best to do this tour at the beginning of your trip to Hawaii to get a feel for what parts of the island are worth venturing back to for full trips.

9. Snorkel with Manta Rays

An absolute must-do activity when you visit Hawaii is to snorkel or dive with manta rays at night.   

Manta rays are enormous, with a wingspan of up to 29 feet! Seeing them is an amazing once-in-a-lifetime experience. 

Multiple boats leave from leave late every afternoon from Kailua-Kona on the Big Island . A nearby site has been set with enormous floodlights permanently mounted to the seabed in a large circle. 

As dusk turns to dark, the lights are turned on. The light attracts swarms of microscopic, invisible-to-the-eye plankton. 

Plankton are manta rays’ main food source, so their presence in turn attracts the mantas.  Divers sit around the circle of lights and snorkelers hold on to large rafts on the surface above them.   

Before long, enormous creatures swoop out of the darkness, mouth wide open to scoop up the plankton. They turn and twist and glide around above the lights, often just below the surface (and snorkelers). It is a truly incredible sight! 

Kids over the age of five can snorkel. Divers need to be certified. The site is open throughout the year, and although it is not guaranteed to see the manta rays, chances are good because of the lights/ plankton. Check out more Big Island Manta Ray snorkel tips.

10. Hike to Papakolea Green Sand Beach On The Big Island

Papakolea Beach is a green sand beach located on the most southern point on the Big Island , Hawaii. With only three green sand beaches in the world and one being in Hawaii, it’s a great opportunity for a great adventure.

You can get to this beach by taking highway 11, to the road to South Point between mile marker 69 and 70 to the end where you’ll find a parking lot. You can park your car there. This is where your hiking experience will start.

The hike is about 2.8 miles and even though it can be hot, it’s a somewhat easy hike, my eight year old daughter had no problem doing it and you’ll witness some of the most beautiful landscapes.

There are drivers waiting at the beginning of the hike to take you all the way to the beach for a fee but driving there is illegal.

When you get there you have to climb down the cinder cone but don’t worry, it’s totally doable with children.

When you plan your hike, make sure you’ll have plenty of water, food/snacks, sunscreen, sunglasses, hat and appropriate attire since there are no shaded areas or any food vendors at the Green Beach.

This is a once in a lifetime venture for some people and you’ll be amazed by the beauty and the uniqueness of this gorgeous beach.

11. Spend a Whole Day at The Polynesian Cultural Center when Visiting Hawaii for the First Time

Originally, I thought it was just a luau and show but, I learned that it is actually an all-day attraction.  There are villages located all around the center representing different islands in the Pacific.  At each location, there are arts, crafts, or shows.

We spent much of the day learning and laughing. Some of the shows are very funny and extremely entertaining.

Our favorite shows were the water show called Huki, which told a history of how the Polynesian Cultural Center was formed, and Ha Breath of life was another amazing show with fire twirlers!

We loved our time there and I know you will love it too!

Tip – When you purchase your ticket s make sure to upgrade to the luau. We made the mistake and ended up purchasing a buffet and didn’t realize it did not include the show.

12. Volunteer with a Non-Profit

There is no shortage of amazing tours to enjoy in Hawaii. As a former sea kayak guide and SUP instructor at Kailua Beach Adventures on Oahu, I can wholeheartedly recommend that you rent a kayak or take a guided tour in the beautiful Kailua Bay!

However, beyond all of the sites to see and tours to take, I recommend that you do some research and find a local non-profit to give your time to. This is an amazing way to give back to the communities of Hawaii while digging into the local culture. Quite literally!

At Papahana Kuaola, you can sign-up for one of their many volunteer days to work in their taro patches and learn about the root vegetable that has been at the core of Hawaiian’s diets for centuries.

It’s incredibly refreshing to participate in something that is less transnational in nature and that exists to serve local communities.

Although these experiences may be seemingly less glamorous, the experiences in which I connect with locals and in the case of the taro patches – get my hands a little dirty – have been the ones that I remember most fondly.

13. Go Ziplining when Visiting Hawaii for the First Time

Ziplining can be considered an extreme activity but once you have done it you are hooked (no pun intended). With so many options of tours and experiences to enjoy in Hawaii, it can be challenging to decide on which one to go for.

For our family, ziplining was on top of the list, as a matter of fact, this was my daughter’s favorite and since we had her with us we had to drive to Hilo and find a company that would allow kids.

It was totally worth the drive, not only to visit some of the sites on that side of the Island, but the company we chose was amazing. The staff was so attentive to my daughter, they even went tandem with her since she was very light for one of the long lines.

On our 4-hour zipline excursion, we got to zipline over a couple of waterfalls and some beautiful landscapes.

If ziplining is on your bucket list, Hawaii is definitely worth a try. Just don’t forget to book in advance since the choices of companies that allow kids are very limited.

Usually, I recommend that first timers start off with a trip to Oahu. It’s the most popular Hawaiian island, as well as the cheapest. Plus there are tons of attractions, activities, great food, and shopping. That’s why I think it’s the best island to visit in Hawaii for the first time.

Are you hoping to save money in Hawaii? You can totally plan an affordable Hawaii vacation by traveling during shoulder season (mid-April to June and September to mid-December.) Plus, there are tons of free things to do in Hawaii.

Hawaii doesn’t participate in daylight savings time. So, they are 2-3 hours behind the West Coast, 3-4 hours behind Mountain Time, 4-5 hours behind Central Time, and 5-6 hours behind the East Coast.

The third-largest Hawaiian island of Oahu is definitely the best island to visit in Hawaii for first time visitors. There’s a lot going on here. Home to the capital, Honolulu, as well as the majority of the archipelago’s population, the island is teeming with life, culture, and nature too. 

It’s also good if you want a good mix of beach break and city living. Honolulu is a bustling urban center with just about everything you need to have an awesome time – shopping, museums and monuments, beaches (starting with Waikiki), good food, and forest trails to hike on (the Diamond Head trail is notoriously amazing). So it’s easy to understand why over six million people per year visit the island.

Other popular attractions on Oahu are Pearl Harbor, the North Shore, the Polynesian Cultural Center, the Dole Plantation, and Hanauma Bay.

So, if you were looking for a blissed-out island vacation destination, perhaps Oahu is not for you. However, if you like food, the modern multicultural island of Oahu is ideal – it really lives up to its name (meaning “Gathering Place” in Hawaiian). 

From restaurants to food trucks and farmers’ markets, gastronomy is a big deal here. Influences on the island’s cuisine and culture, in general, come from as diverse backgrounds as Japan, China, indigenous Hawaiian, Europeans, and Americans.

If all that sounds good to you, then you’ll find most accommodation on the island centered around Waikiki Beach, while if you want something a little more out of the way, the Windward Coast (east side) is packed with beautiful parks and surf spots.

The colloquially named “Big Island” isn’t just big: it’s huge. The island of Hawaii is actually the size of all the other Hawaiian islands combined and a diverse natural oasis. It’s also home to the world’s most active volcano, Kīlauea – one of five active volcanoes found on the island and part of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

The incredibly rich landscape of the Big Island means that it’s the best island in Hawaii for nature enthusiasts, especially those who like to hike and explore. There are countless places to hit the trail in Hawaii, taking you into lush jungles, barren lava fields, sweeping grasslands, and discovering stunning waterfalls. It is also a great place to spot sea turtles, just make sure to keep your distance as it is forbidden to disturb these protected creatures.

Apart from the amazing nature, however, the Big Island is full of history and culture. It’s thought that the first Polynesians landed at Southern Point on the island, for one thing, while the unifier of the Hawaiian islands – Kamehameha the Great – was born on the islands. 

Overall, the Big Island is made up of six regions, each of which is a little different from the next: Hamakua Coast, Hilo, Kau, Kohala, Kona (of Kona Coffee fame), and Puna.

In the northern Hamakua Coast area, you’ll find black sand beaches and dazzling waterfalls; over in the east side, Puna’s wild nature has been dramatically shaped by volcanoes; Hilo is a chilled area with fantastic beaches and interesting farmers’ markets; in the south, Kua is remote, rustic, and home to incredible lava flows.

Kauai is, in a word, paradise. That goes doubly for anybody who likes bountiful nature and classic Hawaiian vibes, and definitely could be the best island to visit in Hawaii for those looking for a laid-back, slower pace of life.

Nicknamed the “Garden Isle”, Kauai is well known for its natural splendor, but it’s not just on land, with surfing, scuba diving, and snorkeling being excellent here.

On the north shore of Kauai you’ll find the Na Pali Coast. This area is known for its abundant wildlife and beautiful white sand beaches. Surfing is pretty much a way of life in the northern part of the island, with many visiting to check out of modern-day stresses and sink right into the chill of island life.

Over on the east side is the Coconut Coast. Named for its coconut palms, this is the most populated part of mostly rural Kauai and makes for a good place to base yourself if you want some more modern amenities. Nearby, to the south, you’ll find Wailua Falls along with luxury resorts and golf courses (if you’ve got the money to spare, of course).

For something a little bit more quaint, head to the west side of the island. Here there’s a scattering of tiny towns and yet more natural beauty, especially in the form of Waimea Canyon.

If you go as your first visit to Hawaii, you’ll be treated to hands down the most beautiful coastline, secluded beaches, and epic canyon. When you go, it’ll feel like you’ve stumbled on a secret.

If you really want some isolation, however, Lanai is the best island to visit in Hawaii for sheer remoteness. Though it’s located just nine miles from the more popular Maui, Lanai feels worlds away from the rest of the world.

Lanai is actually almost entirely owned by a billionaire, Larry Ellison, whose vision is to make the island self-sufficient. The history of the island is intrinsically linked with pineapples; for most of the 20th century, Lanai was the property of fruit conglomerate Dole and was home to the largest pineapple plantation in the world. The island housed immigrant workers as well as tyrannical managers, with that same colonial-esque 1920s architecture still remaining in Lanai City.

There are only a handful of accommodation options on Lanai, one of the most iconic being the 1930s-era Four Seasons Lanai . The island as a whole is all about privacy and seclusion and is not exactly the best island to visit in Hawaii for families – think golf courses and four-wheel drive trails. With no international connections, flights to Lanai are only possible from Honolulu or Maui.

Nature is in abundance on Lanai. Turtle and dolphin spotting are popular pass times here, as is snorkeling or simply hiking on one of the island’s many trails. Lanai’s main beach is Hulupo’e Beach – a stunning, long, sandy crescent tucked in a bay and an ideal spot for snorkeling.

Lanai is also home to Shipwreck Beach, with its namesake huge shipwreck offshore. It is not recommended for swimming here but is perfect for stunning sunsets and beachcombing. Also be sure to visit the Garden of the Gods, not a garden but a beach with lava rock formations making this another incredible sunset spot.

Why Lanai is great for first time visitors: If you’re the kind of traveller that likes to take the path less traveled with fewer tourists, Lanai is somewhere that not too many people get to see. You’ll certainly get bragging rights and access to some incredible trails, and excellent snorkeling.

The most iconic of course is the Four Seasons and is absolutely the best place to stay on the island. Expect sweeping gardens, spacious and bright rooms decorated island luxe style.

Maui is the second-largest of Hawaii’s islands and arguably one of the most famous. People from around the world come to visit this dreamy destination which offers up just about everything that’s good about a trip to Hawaii. 

Known as the “Valley Isle”, Maui has lush landscapes, a long list of picturesque beaches, and volcanic scenery. Many argue that it’s the best island to visit in Hawaii for couples, with a collection of luxurious resorts and fine dining restaurants to relax in (many of these are situated in the southern part of the island).

However, you’ll also find plenty of resorts in the west of Maui with amenities like shops and restaurants, too. In eastern Maui, there’s more of a down-to-earth atmosphere, with the Road to Hana driving route being something that should definitely be on your to-do list here.

Simply put, if you’re in Hawaii for sun, sea, and surf, Maui is probably the place for you – couple or not. There’s a beach for every type of person here, whether you want to try easygoing snorkeling, kiteboarding, or simply laying out in the sun.

Another bonus is that Maui is great to visit in the winter months: you may be able to spot humpback whales as they migrate through the waters around the island. Those who enjoy hiking should make a beeline for Haleakala National Park for some real heaven-on-earth vibes and prime trails through the subtropical wilderness.

Why Maui is great for first time visitors: We’ve always said that Maui is a bit of Oahu, Big Island, and Kauai. You’ve got those fabulous resorts, the moon-like Haleakala crater, and also great hikes. Take it for what you will but if you can’t decide which island to visit in Hawaii as a first time visitor, Maui is never a wrong decision.

The aptly named Maui Sunset is the perfect place to enjoy views of the ocean from your own balcony. The resort is made up of individual apartments with a large on site pool and gym.

More than 50% of people living on Molokai have indigenous Hawaiian roots. Because of this, there is a real focus here on preserving the island’s natural landscape and heritage, rather than solely on tourism. The authentic feel of Molokai makes it the best island to visit in Hawaii to experience real Hawaiian culture.

This long, thin island is awash with national parks and farming land, with accommodation made up mainly of small hotels and family-run bed and breakfasts: a reflection of that authentic feeling.

Over on the western side of the island, you’ll find Molokai’s most idyllic beaches, prized for their great snorkeling. Here, you’ll also find the quaint town of Maunaloa, with a selection of shops and eateries to discover.

On the east side of Moloka’i is Highway 450. Alongside this stretch of road you’ll find many loko i’a (fish ponds) – a type of fish farming that was created by ancient Hawaiians. Some have been restored and are still used by locals to this day.

For more ancient history, head to the Halawa Valley. Once home to sacred taro patches, this jaw-dropping landscape is home to a combo of nature and history with temple ruins and waterfalls with pools.

Why Molokai is great for first time visitors: It may not be as remote as Lanai but is less visited for sure which presents opportunities to see a more authentic side of Hawaii. Many have said that Molokai is the ‘most Hawaiian’ of the islands, taking a step back in time. Also, since this is the large island you can see from Maui, you could do Molokai as a day trip.

Hotel Moloka’i is modelled after a traditional Polynesian village with rooms featured in hut style buildings with comfortable decor and views over the gardens or the ocean.

The most popular choice would be the island of Hawaii, followed by Maui, and then Kauai.

If you’re a first time visitor, a full week (7 days) in Hawaii is recommended.

With 5 days, you should stick to one island. Maui or Oahu would be great choices if it’s your first time.

With 7 days, you’ll be able to split your time between two islands. Oahu and Maui is a great combination but so is Oahu and Kauai.
