The Best Caye Caulker Snorkeling Tours

Caye Caulker snorkeling tours are extremely popular when visiting the islands. The reason for this is that Caye Caulker is just a few thousand feet from the Belize Barrier Reef.

You can see the waves crashing into the reef from shore.

People come from all over the world to snorkel and SCUBA dive at the Belize Barrier Reef and to dive at the Blue Hole, a large sinkhole in the ocean about 43 miles offshore. While the Blue Hole isn’t much for snorkeling, the barrier reef is fantastic.

The Belize Barrier Reef is one of the largest in the world, second only to the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia. So if you’ve ever wanted to give snorkeling a try, Caye Caulker is one of the best places to do it.

If I’m being honest, the marine life here is off the charts amazing, you really don’t want to miss it. Snorkeling is one of my favorite  things to do in Caye Caulker  or any island for the matter.

This post is intended to be a comprehensive guide to Caye Caulker snorkeling options available on the island.

There are a handful of Caye Caulker snorkeling trips that you can choose from which are offered at different prices.

I’ll give you an idea of what you can expect to see in each snorkeling spot, and which tours I recommend, and why.

Caye Caulker Snorkeling Tours

There are a variety of Caye Caulker snorkeling tours to choose from during your visit. Here are the main tours that depart directly from Caye Caulker.

1. Small Group Hol Chan Marine Reserve

Duration: 5.5 hours

This is the tour I did and I totally loved it. It’s a small group so a bit more peaceful than the larger tours, which I liked.

I felt like we had just the right amount of time in each spot and I got to see plenty of cool fish and sharks on this trip. Plus, our tour guide was super fun and was able to tell us all about the fish we were seeing.

2. Seven Stop Snorkel Tour on Belize Barrier Reef

Duration: 6 hours

If you want to see it all, this is the one to choose. This tour is only 30 minutes longer than the Hol Chan tour so the stops are shorter in each location, but its nice to see all the best spots along the island.

3. Caye Caulker Local Reef Half Day Snorkeling Tour (from San Pedro)

Duration: 3 hours

If you want to do some snorkeling, but you don’t feel you need six hours of it, this is the tour for you.

On this short 3 hour snorkeling tour you’ll get a sample of the best snorkeling along Caye Caulker along with a stop on the island for a quick snack.

Prices for snorkeling tours on Caye Caulker range in price anywhere from about $70 to $105 per person depending on what you’re looking for.

A shorter half-day snorkeling trip without lunch or snacks will be less expensive. Longer full-day tours, especially those that include drinks will be on the pricier side.

There are also snorkeling tours that will depart from San Pedro over on Ambergris Caye (like #3 above), or even from Belize City. You can easily reach San Pedro or Belize City via a water taxi.

This is the same water taxi you arrived on. It will take about 30 minutes to get to San Pedro from Caye Caulker and about an hour to get back to Belize City.

Most snorkeling trips will depart Caye Caulker in the morning around 10:00 a.m. The afternoon departures are around 1:00 p.m.

If you have a large group or just prefer your own boat, private tours are also available. You can inquire at any of the dive and snorkel shops on the island.

Caye Caulker Snorkeling Spots

There are a handful of great snorkeling spots near Caye Caulker that you will have the chance to visit. By great snorkeling spots, I mean some of the best in Central America, if not the world.

I’ve listed the main snorkel spots around the island below along with a brief description of what to expect at each location.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve

Hol Chan Marine Reserve is found north of Caye Caulker on the southern tip of Ambergris Caye. Hol Chan is by far the most popular stop on all the Caye Caulker snorkeling tours. I believe all the tours stop at this location.

Hol Chan is a local marine reserve covering about 7 square miles along the Belize Barrier Reef. The water is crystal clear and you’ll get to see all kinds of sea life here. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

During my recent snorkeling tour we were able to see Angel Fish, Sting Rays, Sea Turtles, Moray Eels, and all kinds of other colorful fish I cannot name. It was incredible and easily my favorite stop on the tour.

There is also a Caye Caulker Marine Reserve which you may also visit. The Caye Caulker reserve runs along the section of the Belize Barrier Reef that runs parallel to the island.

Snorkelers and divers will find similar marine life in both reserves.

Shark Ray Alley

Shark Ray Alley is located just south of Hol Chan Marine Reserve. This is where you’ll have the opportunity to swim with Sting Rays, Nurse Sharks, and Sea Turtles.

You shouldn’t have any trouble spotting all three if you snorkel here. There are a lot of them, and believe me, you can’t miss them.

I should also note, there is a second Shark Ray Alley closer to Caye Caulker that you may visit as well, depending on which snorkeling tours you select.

Coral Gardens

Coral Gardens is located in the Caye Caulker Marine Reserve and is the perfect snorkel spot for beginners due to the calm shallow waters and great visibility.

This section of the Belize Barrier Reef features rows of rainbow-colored coral formations with strips of sand in between. It’s fun to swim up and down all the rows checking out all the different types of coral and fish.

Mexico Rocks

Mexico Rocks is located north of Caye Caulker near Ambergris Caye. It’s about a 20-minute boat ride from the main town on the island, San Pedro.

This snorkeling spot is known for its large boulder-like coral formations which attract younger and smaller fish. The small fish in this section of the reef use the coral formations to hide from larger predators.

In addition to the younger fish, you’ll also see plenty of other marine life like stingrays, turtles, and sharks.

There is a shipwreck just a short distance offshore from San Pedro on Ambergris Caye. The sunken ship is covered in corals so it attracts a fair amount of fish.

This snorkel spot can be a bit less impressive as the water here is a bit rough as it’s located next to an opening in the barrier reef. Visibility can also be poor.

The Wreck tends to be included on the longer all-day snorkel trips, the shorter trips usually skip this one.

What to bring on a Caye Caulker Snorkeling Tour

Here’s a quick rundown of what you’ll want to bring along with you on your Belize Caye Caulker snorkeling tour. Generally, the tour will come with the actual snorkel gear. So you don’t need fins, a mask, or a snorkel. You are of course welcome to bring your own if you like.

Here is what you do need to bring.

I recommend at least bringing along what’s listed above, and anything else you think you might need.

Zone D is Shark Ray Alley , where you can swim with nurse sharks and stingrays.

This is the highlight of many peoples snorkeling experience in Belize, and mine as well.

Shark Ray Alley

This site is located within Zone D of Hol Chan Marine Reserve, and it is one of the most popular spots for snorkeling in Belize.

Shark Ray Alley was named by fishermen who used to clean their catch in this area, attracting nurse sharks and stingrays.

Nowadays, tour guides feed these animals with bait, making them friendly and curious towards snorkelers.

You can get close to these amazing creatures, but you should not touch or harass them. You can also see other fish such as jacks, barracudas, horse-eye jacks, and more.

Coral Gardens

This site is located near Caye Caulker, and it is one of the easiest and most accessible spots for snorkeling from Caye Caulker.

Coral Gardens is a shallow area with patches of coral formations that host a variety of fish and invertebrates. You can see parrotfish, angelfish, butterflyfish, damselfish, trunkfish, sea cucumbers, sea urchins, and more.

Coral Gardens is a great spot for beginners and families with children, as the water is calm and clear.

This site is located near Caye Caulker as well, and it is one of the most fun and adventurous spots for snorkeling in Belize. The Wreck is an old barge that sank in the 1960s, and it is now covered with corals and sponges.

The Wreck attracts a lot of fish and other marine life that use it as a shelter or a hunting ground. You can see barracudas, groupers, snappers, grunts, triggerfish, lionfish, and more.

Rules To Follow When Snorkeling

Always listen to your guide . Your guide is a professional who knows the best spots to snorkel, how to avoid dangerous currents, and how to interact with the wildlife.

They will also explain the rules and regulations of the marine reserve and how to protect it. Follow their instructions and do not wander off on your own.

Do not touch or feed the animals . The marine reserve is home to many creatures, such as nurse sharks, stingrays, turtles, manatees, and more. They are wild animals and should be observed from a safe distance.

Do not touch, feed, or harass them in any way. This could harm them or provoke them to attack you.

Do not stand on or break the coral . The coral reef is a fragile ecosystem that provides shelter and food for many fish and other organisms. It is also very sensitive to changes in temperature, pollution, and human activity.

Do not stand on or break the coral with your fins, hands, or snorkel gear. This could damage or kill the coral and affect the whole reef.

Use reef-safe sunscreen . Sunscreen is essential to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays, but some sunscreens contain chemicals that can harm coral and marine life.

Use a reef-safe sunscreen that does not contain oxybenzone, octinoxate, or other harmful ingredients. Apply it at least 15 minutes before entering the water and reapply as needed.

My Experience On A Caye Caulker Snorkeling Tour

Honestly, I decided to do a Caye Caulker snorkeling tour just two days after my San Pedro Snorkeling Tour as it was just so incredible! Seriously it was the best snorkeling I had ever done, so when I quickly made friends who were going on a snorkeling tour I also had to join.

The following day we grabbed a couple of fry jacks for breakfast and wandered on down to our meeting point. An unassuming snorkeling shop awaited where a gentleman who would be our guide quickly greeted us.

We geared up with our flippers and masks and headed over to the wharf where a boat was ready to go. There was my friend and I, and another group of people who were visiting from Canada.

The first stop was Hol Chan Marine Reserve, though we had to get there first, and on the way, we would stop and look for manatees. Occasionally throughout the journey, we would turn off the motors and just watch the waters waiting for one to surface.

Unfortunately, no luck, so on to the marine reserve. Plunging into the crystal clear water we quickly spot a turtle while the rest of the group jumps in as well.

We then all go for a snorkel exploring the reef, spotting many fish, and even a couple of nurse sharks. This place to pure magic, and when we got back to the boat we all agreed this is the best snorkeling spot we had ever been to.

We then take a short boat trip over to Shark Ray Alley where we plunge in again. However, this time we are surrounded by nurse sharks and sting rays. We hang out with them until they lose interest and head over the another boat that is throwing food in the water to bait them.

Back on board the boat we head over to Coral Gardens, which is a lot closer to Caye Caulker. Again, we stop, look for manatees, but no luck so we jump in anyway prepared to snorkel the reef.

However when I jumped in, immediately I noticed an outline of a huge creature, a manatee ! I alert the rest of the group, and soon enough 2 other manatees show up, for 3 in total!

They are just these large, round, chill creatures and we are lucky enough to spend an hour swimming alongside them. No doubt this is the highlight of a snorkeling tour from Caye Caulker, but be aware not everyone finds them.

However, as we found the manatees, and hit up all the snorkeling spots relatively fast the driver took us for a bit of a tour around Caye Caulker. We head to the other side where dolphins play around the boat wake, look for a resident crocodile, feed the enormous tarpons, and even spot numerous jellyfish .

No doubt we got our money’s worth, being able to experience absolutely everything on offer and relatively easy with minimal searching. For sure it is 100% worth doing a Caye Caulker snorkeling tour!

What To Pack When Snorkeling

A Caye Caulker snorkeling tour is a great way to explore the amazing Belize Barrier Reef and see a variety of marine life. However, you need to pack some essential items to make your snorkeling experience comfortable and enjoyable.

Here are some suggestions on what to pack on a Caye Caulker snorkeling tour:

Snorkeling gear : If you don’t have your own snorkeling gear, you can rent it from the tour company or buy it on the island. However, if you have your own gear, you may prefer to bring it with you for a better fit and quality.

Sun protection : The sun can be very strong in Belize, especially when you are on the water. You need to protect yourself from sunburn and heatstroke by wearing sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and a cover-up.

Swimwear and towel : You will need to wear a swimsuit or swim trunks for snorkeling, and you may want to bring a change of clothes for after the tour. You will also need a towel to dry off and wrap yourself in.

Camera : If you want to capture the beauty of the underwater world, you may want to bring a waterproof camera or a GoPro. You may also want to bring a waterproof case or bag for your camera and other valuables.

Can You Snorkel From The Shore In Caye Caulker

Snorkeling from the shore in Caye Caulker is possible, but not very rewarding, as the water is shallow and murky near the beach. There is also not much marine life or coral.

The best way to enjoy snorkeling in Caye Caulker is to join a boat tour that will take you to the most spectacular spots in the reef, such as Hol Chan Marine Reserve, Shark Ray Alley, and Coral Gardens

If you don’t want to do a snorkeling tour you can still experience the local marine life landside by visiting Iguana Reef Inn. Every evening around 5 p.m., the hotel staff feed the stingrays that gather near the shore, and you can join them for free.

Where To Stay In Caye Caulker

Caye Caulker is a pretty small island so you should have no problem staying in a decent location. It’s pretty popular to get around by bicycle or simply walking.

Personally, I stayed at Bellas Backpackers in Caye Caulker.

Though I will say it does have mixed reviews online, I think the majority of this is travelers who are not used to staying in hostels and are just booking it because of the price.

They have also upgraded since my last visit adding air conditioning to more of their dorm rooms (which is very much needed).

Honestly, it had a great vibe, I made plenty of friends and it was perfect for what I needed. The showers are in a separate building, not all windows have curtains, and your blanket is just a sheet.

Other Things To Do In Caye Caulker

If you’re looking for a tropical paradise with plenty of things to do, Caye Caulker is the place for you. Here are some of the best things to do:

Shop and eat at the local markets and restaurants: You can find a variety of local products and souvenirs at the markets and shops along the main street, such as handicrafts, jewelry, clothing, art, and more.

You can also taste some of the delicious Belizean cuisines at restaurants and street stalls, such as lobster, conch, rice and beans, stew chicken, and my favorite, fry jacks.

Watch the sunset and dance at the reggae bars: Caye Caulker is also known for its vibrant nightlife, especially on the weekends. You can watch the sunset from one of the many spots on the island, such as the Split, the Iguana Reef Inn, or the Caye Caulker Water Taxi dock.

Feed the stingrays at Iguana Reef Inn: Another fun and unique thing to do in Caye Caulker is to feed the stingrays at Iguana Reef Inn. Every evening around 5 p.m., the hotel staff feed the stingrays in the shallows. They are very gentle and friendly, and they won’t sting you unless you step on them by accident.

Belize is a great destination for snorkeling, and you can enjoy it year-round. However, the best time to snorkel in Belize is during the dry season from December through May. During this time, the weather is mild, and the water temperature and visibility are excellent.

Do you need a wetsuit to snorkel in Belize?

The water temperature in Belize is generally warm and comfortable for snorkeling, ranging from 26°C to 29°C (78°F to 84°F). Therefore, a wetsuit is not necessary for snorkeling in Belize. However, if you are sensitive to cold or plan to spend an extended amount of time in the water, you may consider wearing a rash shirt, which also doubles up as protection from sunburn.

Can you swim off Caye Caulker?

There is a public beach at the north end of the island, at the Lazy Lizard. The water is very clear and free of seagrass. However, there is very little beach on Caye Caulker, and most swimming is done at the split.

Are there crocodiles in Caye Caulker?

Yes, there are crocodiles in Caye Caulker! They rarely attack, but in recent years this has happened multiple times. You are best off to not swim in mangrove areas and instead somewhere like the Split where it is known to be safer.

Is Caye Caulker on the barrier reef?

Caye Caulker is a small coral island off the coast of Belize in the Caribbean Sea. It is located approximately 1.6 km west of the Belize Barrier Reef. However, it is easy enough to do a boat trip out to explore.

Without a doubt, one of the best things to do in Caye Caulker is to go on a snorkeling tour . The underwater world here is nothing short of paradise, and it is something you cannot miss in Belize!

Spending a day on the Belize Barrier Reef in the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean, surrounded by marine life of all shapes and sizes is up there as one of our favourite experiences in Belize . Even one of our most memorable days in 6 months of travelling Central America!

The island of Caye Caulker is a stone’s throw from the Belize Barrier Reef. This reef system is part of the broader Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, which stretches over 1,100 km / 700 mi from Mexico to Honduras. It is the second largest barrier reef in the world, second only to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

Belize’s section of this reef, the Belize Barrier Reef, is one of the most pristine and protected parts of the reef. It has UNESCO World Heritage Listed status, and the country has done an incredible job of preserving the quality of the reef and protecting the diverse marine life that calls it home. As Australians, we probably shouldn’t say this, but Belize’s reef can definitely give ours a run for its money!

Wildlife you can expect to see on a Caye Caulker snorkeling tour

Before I get into the nitty-gritty details, you’re probably busting to know what types of marine life you can expect to see on a Caye Caulker snorkeling tour.

Short answer? LOTS! This is to date the best snorkeling experience we have ever had, and I am still processing how much amazing wildlife we saw in just one day.

Of course, it’s worth noting that these animals are wild and nobody can control their presence. You’re not guaranteed to see anything on your Caye Caulker snorkeling tour, and any company that does guarantee sightings is probably feeding the marine life which is a big no-no (more on that below).

However, given the amazing condition of the reef and the fantastic work Belize does to protect it, you will absolutely see at least some of these animals:

• Sea turtles – most commonly green, but there are also hawksbills and loggerheads around
• Nurse sharks – completely harmless, known as the ‘puppies of the sea’
• Reef sharks – also small, docile and non-aggressive
• Manatees – Belize is home to the Antillean Manatee, a sub-species of the West Indian Manatee
• Southern stingrays – giant stingrays that hang out on the sandy ocean floor
• Spotted eagle rays – graceful rays that seemingly fly through the water
• Eels – there are different species of moray eels hiding in the coral
• Spiny lobsters – and other crustaceans like crabs
• Reef fish – of all colours, shapes and sizes
• Tarpon – large fish with the ability to jump out of the water
• Corals – all kinds of hard and soft corals like brain coral, staghorn coral, elkhorn coral and more
• Sea birds – pelicans, frigate birds and other feathered friends soar overhead

And so, so many more!

Caye Caulker snorkeling tour details

Obviously getting out onto the reef on a Caye Caulker snorkeling tour is a must-do during your time on the island! But with every tour company and accommodation offering a tour, it can be overwhelming to know what to look out for, and how to choose the right Caye Caulker snorkeling tour for you. So here’s what you need to know…

Full v half-day tour

Most tour companies will offer you the choice of a full, or a half-day snorkeling tour.

Full-day tours generally visit 7 stops, and last around 5 – 6 hours. Half-day tours will usually visit 3 or 4 stops and last for 2 – 3 hours.

Unless you’re concerned about your ability to snorkel, or you don’t love being underwater, I would wholeheartedly recommend the full day. Each stop was unique, with so much different marine life, I would have been upset if we only had a few hours!

Tour companies to choose from

The first thing to note here is that basically every tour company offers the same experience. They all visit the same stops around the reef, usually offer both half and full-day tours, and essentially include the same things.

However, not all tours are delivered to the same high-quality standard, with guides who are passionate and knowledgeable about the reef.

Some tours have more of a focus on drinking and partying, and we met some other travellers who said their guides were half drunk the whole time. If you want to party, go on a party boat cruise .

If you want to experience the beauty of the Belize Barrier Reef, and learn more about this rich ecosystem, choose a tour company that will deliver this.

I can’t comment on any other tour company besides the one we went with, but I can highly recommend Salt Life Eco Tours . We selected these guys because they have a strong stance on not feeding marine life. They also had no single-use plastics on the boat, and all our drinks, lunch and snacks were served in reusable containers.

Our guides were so knowledgeable about the reef and marine life we saw, and no question went unanswered! They gave strict instructions on how we could interact with the reef and enforced rules to avoid damage. It was very clear to me that they had spent much of their lives out on the water, and they had a real love and passion for the reef, with a strong desire to protect it.

Price of Caye Caulker snorkeling tours

The price for Caye Caulker snorkeling tours is pretty fixed across the island, and most operators offer similar pricing for the full and half-day options.

You should expect to pay around $90 USD for a full-day tour, including lunch. Most half-day tours are sold for $45 USD, generally without lunch.

Our full-day tour with Salt Life Eco Tours was $90 USD including a yummy lunch, snacks and drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic).

What’s included in the tours

This may differ slightly between tour companies, but generally, you can expect to have the following included:

Sustainability considerations

Coral reefs are some of the most fragile ecosystems in the world, and as visitors, it’s on us to do what we can to minimise our impact.

There are a couple of things to consider for your Caye Caulker snorkeling tour, to make sure we aren’t contributing to degrading or damaging the reef:

• Feeding marine life is not okay – and you need to choose a tour company that openly rejects this. Many tour operators around Caye Caulker feed the marine life to entice them towards boats, to make sure their guests get to swim with all the different animals. But this puts them at risk of injury from boat motors and makes them reliant on humans for food, rather than naturally finding their normal food sources. It’s a terrible practice, and if you do somehow end up on a tour that is doing this, I encourage you to speak up and complain.
• Use reef-safe sunscreen – but it’s even better if you can avoid using sunscreen at all. Reef-safe sunscreen is a much better alternative to toxic chemical sunscreens, but lots of research has shown it can still damage our reefs. If you’re lathering up with cream and jumping straight into the water, you’re still introducing foreign materials into the ecosystem that can have detrimental effects. Instead, cover up with a rash top, and a hat and shirt on the boat to try and avoid needing sunscreen at all.
• Opt for a tour that has banned single-use plastic – and instead offers drinks and foods in reusable containers. Our world does not need any more plastic waste. Plus, despite best intentions, eating and drinking on a boat in often windy conditions means rubbish inevitably ends ups in the ocean. Support tour companies who use reusables, and don’t bring any single-use plastic onboard with you either.
• Do not touch the reef or marine life – and follow all briefing instructions from your guide. It is astounding to me how many people just do not listen to what they’re told, and selfishly and ignorantly step on coral, pick up starfish, chase down turtles etc. If you touch any coral or marine life, you can kill them. Simple as that. You are in a wild environment, that is not your home. Respect it and act like a good visitor.

Seven stop Caye Caulker snorkeling tour

To give you an idea of what to expect on your Caye Caulker snorkeling tour, I’m going to run through the seven sites we visited on our full-day tour with Salt Life Eco Tours . Most tour companies stop at all of these places, but the order may change.

Wind, waves and tides can affect if and when you visit these sites. Just remember your captain and guides know the area like the back of their hand, and your safety is their priority. They won’t take you somewhere if it’s not safe to do so.

Salt Life Eco Tours starts their full-day tour at 9 am, which is much earlier than most of the companies on the island, who leave at 10:30 am. This means you are on the reef earlier without as many crowds!

1. Manatees

Our first stop of the day was a site where manatees are commonly found. The captains all talk to each other, so if someone has spotted a manatee that day, your guides and captain will be keeping a very close eye out to see if they can find one.

Manatees hang around Caye Caulker year-round, and we were lucky enough to spot one in January. However, they congregate in much larger groups during the mating season, which is usually June – July. Despite being large, they can be pretty elusive, and they swim away quite quickly, so be ready to jump in as soon as you get the signal from your guide!

These strange creatures look like huge, floating blobs underwater and we were absolutely in awe! Neither of us had ever seen a manatee before, and they are such unique animals. We were so excited that our first stop of the day was swimming with a manatee! Pinch myself.

2. Hol Chan Marine Reserve

Our second stop was the famous Hol Chan Marine Reserve. This small section of the reef is part of a protected area, that is monitored 24/7 from a floating rangers station. Your tour guides should give you a wristband, indicating that you have paid to enter the protected area (this should be included in your tour price) and to show to the rangers before you enter the water.

Because this is a protected area, you must snorkel with your guide and remain as a group. It can feel a little cramped when you first jump in but don’t worry, within a few minutes the crowds disperse and you’ll naturally spread out a little bit.

Meaning ‘little channel’ in Mayan, Hol Chan was my favourite stop of the day. It felt a bit crowded when we arrived, with lots of boats docked near the ranger station. But once my head went underwater, I was instantly surrounded by three sea turtles, and it was all okay!

You will swim towards a deeper channel in the reef, which typically attracts larger marine life and is always our preferred type of environment to snorkel in.

We saw a whole group of Spotted Eagle Rays gliding by below us, it was magic. These guys are my favourite marine animals, so I was totally content at this point! There were also reef and nurse sharks, huge schools of fish and plenty of colourful corals.

3. Conch Shell Bay

Conch Shell Bay is an area where fishermen have thrown hundreds of conch shells into the water, after cleaning out the conch from their day’s catch. This is a short stop, as there isn’t too much marine life to see here, but the shells carpeting the ocean floor were pretty cool.

We actually anchored and had our lunch stop here in the bay. The water was incredible, such a bright blue colour and crystal clear, it was the perfect place to hang out for a while.

4. Sunken Barge

Our next stop was the shipwreck, a large barge that sunk over 40 years ago.

These days, the remains of the ship are covered in colourful corals and act as a home to lots of different fish. The wreck is less than 10 metres / 30 feet deep, so if you’re a good free diver you can dive down and get a better look.

We spotted a nurse shark here sleeping on the sandy floor next to the wreck, so keep your eyes peeled!

5. Shark Ray Alley

Next up is the iconic stop, Shark Ray Alley, which I’m sure you’ve heard of in your Caye Caulker planning. Yes, this is the place where you can swim with sharks!

Shark Ray Alley is where fishermen used to come to clean their catch for the day, attracting nurse sharks and stingrays with the scraps.

These days, the sharks are attracted by the sound of the boat engine, and even without feeding them, your boat will be surrounded by curious and playful nurse sharks before you jump in the water!

Nurse sharks are very placid sharks, that aren’t aggressive or dangerous to humans. In fact, they’re known as the ‘puppies of the sea’ because they are so playful and curious.

We loved jumping in and swimming amongst these guys. It is so fascinating to see sharks up close, and they are such interesting creatures to watch. There are also tons of huge Southern Stingrays in this area, and you’ll see many gliding past on the seagrass floor.

6. Coral Gardens

The Coral Gardens is an area rich in all types of corals. There is less marine life here, but the area is a beautiful example of how vibrant a healthy reef can be, with hard and soft corals of all shapes, colours and sizes.

This was our final stop on the reef, and admittedly we spent most of the time jumping off the boat and floating in the insanely blue waters. It did not feel real how blue the water was, I was in heaven!

7. Tarpon Fish

The final stop is back on the edge of the island, where you have the chance to see the giant Tarpon fish, which have a natural ability to leap out of the water.

If you waggle your fingers above the surface, one will leap out of nowhere thinking you have food. They don’t have teeth but they will suction onto your finger so think quickly!

This is a stop where many tour companies will give you food to feed the fish. It’s not necessary to do this, given (unfortunately) they are so accustomed to people, so you can still have the same experience of seeing them jump out of the water, without giving them a free meal.

Caye Caulker snorkeling v scuba diving

If you’re a scuba diver, you might be wondering if you should do a Caye Caulker snorkeling tour or go diving.

We are qualified divers, and although we would have loved to dive around Caye Caulker, the prices are crazy expensive and it deterred us.

We had heard so many positive reviews for the snorkel tour, we decided we would book that first, and if we didn’t feel satisfied we could organise to dive a few days later.

Well, the snorkel tour was the best ocean experience we have ever had – diving or snorkeling – and we saw so much marine life in one day, we didn’t know how we could beat that diving!

We didn’t feel we needed to book a dive, especially as we were doing a scenic flight over the Great Blue Hole too, so we kind of covered all bases.

If you love diving and you’ve got the budget for it, by all means, you are going to have an incredible experience. But, I guess what I’m trying to say is, you don’t have to dive to enjoy the Belize Barrier Reef and see a ton of marine life.

There are just a handful of reputable scuba companies on Caye Caulker.  Frenchies Diving  and  Blue Wave Divers  are considered the best.

What to bring on your Caye Caulker snorkeling tour

Your tour company will provide pretty much everything you need for the day, but there are a couple of things you should bring along:

• 👙 Swimwear – come wearing it, as there is nowhere to get changed
• 🩱 Rash top or t-shirt – to wear in the water for sun protection
• 🧢 Hat and outer shirt – for the boat for sun protection
• 🧴 Reef safe sunscreen – if you really have to use it
• 🕶️ Sunglasses – it’s bright out there on the water!
• 🧖🏽‍♀️ Towel – to dry off and stay warm between stops
• 💧 Reusable water bottle – there should be purified water on the boat for refills
• 📷  Underwater camera – a GoPro or waterproof phone case (sold everywhere on the island)
• 🎒 Waterproof bag – to keep all your bits safe and dry on the boat

Caye Caulker Snorkeling: An Unforgettable Day

Going snorkeling in Belize is a must-do activity . It really is the best of the best in terms of day trips and experiences in Caye Caulker, Belize, and Central America.

Like climbing a volcano in Guatemala , seeing Mayan ruins in Mexico, or seeing the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco – it’s not a trip to be missed !

A full-day snorkeling trip in Caye Caulker typically lasts for around 6 to 7 hours , starting at 9am. And, in that time, you’ll visit at least 5 truly special places to snorkel along the Belize Barrier Reef system.

The Belize Barrier Reef is part of the larger Meso-American Barrier Reef system that runs from Mexico to Honduras. It’s the second-largest barrier reef in the world so there’s a whole lot to see!

Of course, there is no guarantee of seeing any animal. But, you’re very likely to see sharks, stingrays, turtles, and a whole lot of fish.

And, not just a couple of each animal either. As soon as your head is under the water, you’ll enter an almost-magical underwater animal kingdom .

I wasn’t prepared for just how much sea life there would be ! At times, you’ll be surrounded by sharks, fish, and coral covering all colours of the rainbow!

Caye Caulker Snorkeling Tours

There’s no shortage of companies and locals offering tours from Caye Caulker out to the barrier reef.

You can f ind local agencies along the sides of the few streets on Caye Caulker . Generally, their tours are advertised outside with a basic summary of what’s included, where you visit, and the price.

Another option is to book online . This comes with the added bonus of being able to read reviews and book in advance of getting to the island.

Pretty much all the tours visit the same places , last for a similar amount of time , and include the same things . And prices are pretty similar whether you book online or in person.

Unless you’re visiting Caye Caulker, Belize over a very busy period – such as Christmas, New Year, or Spring Break – you’ll be fine to book a Belize snorkeling tour just a day or two beforehand.

How much does it cost to snorkel in Caye Caulker?

Most full-day snorkel tours cost around 90 USD (180 Belize Dollars). And half-day snorkeling Caye Caulker Belize tours cost around 50 USD (100 Belize Dollars).

Prices might have been cheaper pre-2020 but now, this is the price you’ll pay from most tour companies on the island.

Private tours may be available depending on availability. The price of these will be higher. You should get quotes from different tour companies to find the best price.

How to Book Your Caye Caulker Snorkel Tour

Some of the most well-known snorkel tours from Caye Caulker are run by Salt Life Eco Tours, Caveman Snorkeling Tours, and Raggamuffin Tours. But honestly, there’s so many to choose from and you can always ask your hotel or hostel for recommendations.

For those who’d prefer to book online in advance to secure their date, there’s two tours I’d recommend…

The first is this 7-stop snorkel tour of the best parts of the Belize Barrier Reef near Caye Caulker run by Salt Life Eco Tours.

You’ll visit some of the most beautiful underwater spots and have lunch surrounded by sharks . This tour takes no more than 10 or 12 people (one of the lowest limits around) and will capture videos and photos for you.

Or if you’re wanting a half-day tour, this 3-hour snorkeling tour from Caye Caulker still packs in 3 different locations .

Expect beautiful coral and a whole lot of wildlife. Entrance fees, equipment, water, and fruit are included . A shorter trip is perfect for people visiting from a cruise ship, those who don’t want to swim for a long period, and those with a short time in Caye Caulker.

TOP TIP: Don’t book your snorkeling tour for the last day of your trip. Bad weather such as rain, strong winds, or just very choppy water can see the trip postponed. Don’t miss out because you can’t rearrange!

What’s Included

For all tours, the minimum that’s included is: fins, snorkel, goggles, lunch, a tour guide, and a life jacket .

Most tours also include the entrance fee for the marine parks in the tour cost . However, you should check this with whichever company you book with.

Water, fruit juice, and fresh fruit may also be included in the price. More expensive tours may also include unlimited drinks or more snacks. These will be at a premium, however.

TOP TIP: Life jackets make for excellent buoyancy aids in wavy water. Unless you’re wanting to go fully under the sea whilst snorkeling, use a life jacket as a buoyancy aid. It’ll make your life so much easier! You don’t have to work as hard to stay afloat and you can clear your goggles without drinking a lot of seawater. Take it from me, I drank a lot of salty water that day!

Where you visit and what animals you see on Caye Caulker Snorkel Tours

All good, full-day tours visit at least 4 (if not all) of these places. The different sites are full of marine life leaving you speechless!

Hol Can Marine Reserve

The busiest and most popular snorkel spot around the Cayes. Hol Chan Marine Reserve is located just a couple of kilometres off the coast of San Pedro on Ambergris Caye.

Because of its proximity to Ambergris Caye, the reserve is popular with tourists visiting just here (rather than a full-day tour). And, as a result, the area will probably be busier than you expect with plenty of boats moored up.

However, under the water, you won’t notice those people . Rather, you’ll be instantly mesmerised by the wildlife greeting you straight off the boat. As soon I got in the water, the first animal I saw was a turtle and I felt like I was dreaming!

Turtles, nurse sharks, stingrays, and whole schools of fish are the norm here. Don’t be surprised to see octopuses, eels, and barracudas either.

As a protected area, Hol Chan Marine Reserve snorkeling is only possible if you’re part of a guided tour . And, additionally, you have to stay with your guide in the water the whole time. But don’t worry, you’ll be spread out and it won’t feel cramped or tour guide-y at all.

Shark Ray Alley

As the name suggests, Shark Ray Alley Caye Caulker is the place to see sharks and rays . In the water around the boat, nurse sharks and stingrays wait for fish (or lunch leftovers) to be thrown in.

Once in the water, sharks and rays will completely surround you ! It’s an experience like no other, that’s for sure. And, from above the water, you can see the sharks and rays fight for space to be in prime position for that next fish!

All the animals are friendly enough – both are completely harmless. Although, a stingray did suck my partner’s arm, which left him with a big lovebite-type bruise! Apparently, they have strong suction!

Shark Ray Alley Caye Caulker is actually part of the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. So, you’ll entrance fee will cover both parts.

Generally, though, you won’t take a guided tour. Instead, you’ll stay nearby to where the boat anchors to enjoy the underwater mayhem.

Coral Gardens

Another snorkeling spot along the Belize Barrier Reef is Coral Gardens. In my experience, it might not have as many big-name marine animals but the variety and colours of the coral and fish are magical .

As part of the Caye Caulker Marine Reserve, visiting as part of a tour is mandatory . You’ll get to snorkel around with your guide in the exceptionally clear and shallow waters.

Though you do need to be careful not to step on or kick coral everywhere you snorkel . At Coral Gardens, it’s especially important to be aware of your surroundings as the water can be just a few feet deep in places.

The sUnken Barge

Located on the seabed 25 metres below the surface is what remains of a 30-foot-long barge . Most of the wreck is covered in coral, sand, and water plants.

It’s a unique Belize snorkeling spot, for sure.

Unless you’re on a diving tour in Caye Caulker, you won’t get to swim inside the barge . But, nevertheless, it is still a cool sight to see. The sunken barge is also not visited as much by groups from San Pedro, so you may be the only group there.

The deeper water is colder than the other shallower spots . And, as a result, you don’t spend as long at the sunken barge . However, there is certainly less to see too.

If you are cold when you’re back on the boat, make sure to dry off with a towel quickly and be sat in the sun to warm up.

Manatee Spotting

The manatees off the coast of Caye Caulker are there seasonally . So, your chances of seeing manatees depend on when you visit. Plus, sometimes, you might just not get lucky.

I visited in late November and the guides warned us in advance that we weren’t likely to see any. The guides start to get a feeling as they do the tours a few times a week, so know if the Caye Caulker manatee numbers are low or if they’ve moved away.

Sadly, we didn’t get to see a manatee – but, I saw so much marine life, it didn’t take away from the day at all.

As soon as you get to the area to search for the Caye Caulker manatees, the guides will ask you to get ready. Fins on, snorkel ready, etc, so that you can get into the water as soon as a manatee is spotted. They can go out of sight as quickly as they appear , so you don’t want to miss out.

If you do spot a manatee on your trip, the important thing is to not touch the manatees . Give them plenty of space and look on from some distance.

Feeding the Tarpons and Frigates

Another common stop on a Caye Caulker snorkeling tour is to feed the tarpons (big fish) and frigates (birds) with fish. Both of these make for great photos and videos .

The trick is holding a fish over the side of the boat and watching the tarpons leap from the water to grab the fish.

Similarly, the guides will ask for a volunteer to hold a fish above their head. Then, a frigate will swoop down and grab the fish in its beak, in one swift movement making for a great slow-motion video.

There will likely be more than enough fish to go around, so everyone gets to participate (if they want to).

What To Bring When Going Snorkeling in Caye Caulker

Let’s recap what’s normally included in your tour price. Fins, snorkel, mask, life jacket, and lunch as a minimum. Then, you may also get fruit juice, water, and fresh fruit – you should check this in advance.

Additionally, you’ll need to bring the following:

• Swimwear . Arrive wearing it, as there won’t be anywhere to get changed . For women, a swimsuit is great to avoid having to adjust your bikini regularly. A long-sleeved, sun-protective swim top or rash guard is also great if you have one to avoid sunburn and keep cool. For men, swim shorts are fine, but an additional T-shirt or sports top is great for avoiding sunburn.
• Reef-safe sun cream . The barrier reefs are damaged enough, let’s not add to the problem . If you don’t have any, I’d recommend covering up instead . A T-shirt, shorts and a cap for on the boat are great.
• GoPro, float, and waterproof phone case.  Straight forward enough, you don’t want to miss out on capturing those magical moments. Make sure you have a float (ideally with a wrist strap) so you don’t lose your GoPro!
• Extra drinks and snacks.  An extra drink with some flavour is great for getting the salty taste out of your mouth . If you think you’ll want any extra snacks, bring them too. Just remember, any rubbish needs to come with you off the boat.

Why You Can’t Snorkel from the Shore in Caye Caulker

While technically, you can snorkel just off the shore in Caye Caulker, you won’t be anywhere need the barrier reef . And you’ll see very little wildlife and very little coral .

All of the locations listed above are at least a couple of kilometres off the coast . Additionally, to snorkel at Hol Chan and Caye Caulker marine reserves, you need to be part of a guided tour with a licensed operator and boat.

If you’re not wanting to join a Caye Caulker snorkel tour, then the best place to spot marine life is at Iguana Reef Inn.

Here, you’ll easily be able to see stingrays at the shore – as well as stroke them around feeding time at 4 pm. As well as fish and seahorses.

Travelling to Caye Caulker & Belize

So if you’re wondering how to get to Caye Caulker , there’s plenty of options.

If you’re travelling from Cancun to Caye Caulker , you have the choice of flight routes and overland and sea options. Whereas from Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and from the beautiful Bacalar it’ll be a combination of buses and water taxis. Then the quickest way will be to get the boat from either Chetumal or Belize City to Caye Caulker .

Or if you’re coming from Guatemala, you’ll need to travel from Flores to Belize City and then Belize City to Caye Caulker . Although it’s pretty common to book the two parts of the journey in one booking.

From Belize City, you can get to the island by plane or by boat . A travel comparison site like gottoGo is a good place to check out prices and availability for your travel dates.

Being based in Ambergris Caye, we found it more practical for our group to go on our snorkeling tour right from where we were, rather than navigating our way to Caye Caulker first.

Plus, it turned out to be a budget-friendly choice since avoiding the additional ferry to Caye Caulker saved us extra expenses. 

For context, a roundtrip ferry from San Pedro to Caye Caulker typically costs around $18 USD per person - not necessarily a bank-breaker, but every dollar saved counts. 

Our decision wasn’t just about the cost; it was about maximizing our time and ensuring a hassle-free experience. 

We all know how limited PTO can be as Americans, so maximizing our vacation time was crucial.

The back of the boat featured nets where up to six adults can lay down, providing a unique vantage point to observe the fish swimming beneath you.

Your snorkeling essentials , including a snorkel mask, goggles, fins, and a life jacket are all provided.

You’ll have some of the best shrimp ceviche you’ve ever had in your life, along with a selection of juicy fresh fruits. 

If you have special dietary restrictions, you can just give them a heads up and they will happily accommodate you.

You’ll stay refreshed with complimentary water and bottomless rum punch that adds a special touch to your adventure.

There are a variety of captivating sites that you could explore during your Caye Caulker snorkel, e ach offering a unique underwater experience.

Here’s a rundown of some noteworthy sites you might explore:

Hol Chan Marine Reserve

The Hol Chan Marine Reserve is the nearest site to Ambergris Caye, and it reveals a lively underwater ecosystem. 

This isn’t about just spotting small fish; it’s an opportunity to observe impressive grouper, graceful stingrays, and a colorful array of marine life.

For the more adventurous (like my husband), there’s even a chance to free-dive through an underwater cave full of fish. 

Even if you prefer staying close to the boat, the marine life near the surface is quite impressive. 

During our visit, my friends and I enjoyed the sighting of stingrays and sizable fish, creating an incredible snorkeling experience right by the boat.

Shark Ray Alley

Prepare to encounter numerous nurse sharks gracefully navigating the waters at Shark Ray Alley. 

This site offers a bucket-list opportunity to swim alongside these majestic creatures, varying in size. 

Surrounded by an abundance of fish and stingrays, the sharks, although their skin feels scaly and rough when touched, prove to be friendly companions.

It’s an experience that might surprise you, leaving you with a newfound appreciation for these fascinating underwater residents.

The best part is that even if you don’t feel comfortable jumping in with the sharks, seeing them from the boat is such a cool experience. 

There is no pressure for anyone to get into the water if they’re not comfortable with it. 

My husband and friends ventured out into the waters of Shark Ray Alley and had the time of their lives swimming with the sharks and all the sea life and came back with all their limbs, so it’s not actually as intimidating as it may seem.

Caye Caulker Marine Reserve

The Caye Caulker Marine Reserve offers a diverse and lively underwater experience, although it may be less impressive than Hol Chan Marine Reserve.

Within the Caye Caulker Marine Reserve, you’ll find Coral Gardens, a mesmerizing underwater landscape adorned with vibrant coral formations. 

The shallow waters in this area offer excellent visibility of the sea life.

Coral Gardens is about a 15-minute boat ride away from Caye Caulker.

Caye Caulker Snorkeling Schedule

Here's a sample snorkeling schedule that XSite Belize Sailing & Adventures provided for our unforgettable day.

Times may vary, but this gives you a general idea of how your full day snorkel tours can go.

9:30 AM Meet-Up : 

Guests are briefed on the day’s experience.

R emember to bring your sunscreen and towels.

10:00 AM Departure : 

Set sail from Ambergris Caye with fresh fruits, shrimp ceviche, and an open bar.

Don’t be shy, connect to the Bluetooth and play your favorite music!

10:45 AM Hol Chan Marine Reserve : 

Enjoy a guided snorkel of Hol Chan Marine Reserve, lasting about 45 minutes with a knowledgeable guide. 

12:00 PM Shark & Ray Alley : 

Dive into more snorkeling with sharks and stingrays, or watch from the catamaran as they swim to the boat.

After snorkeling, it’s time to get into some of the “secret” rum punch, more shrimp ceviche, and fresh fruit. 

1:30 PM The Split :

Sail right through where Caye Caulker was split into two.

The southern side is more developed than the northern side.

Next, it’s time to get off the boat and grab a Lizard Juice from Lazy Lizard!

This is a green frozen lime-flavored drink with 3 or 4 different rums in it. You only need one of these drinks 🙂

2:00 PM Tarpon Feeding : 

After you’ve grabbed your Lizard Juice, your guide will take you down to the Tarpon Feeding.

You can purchase sardine bait for 5 BZD (~$2.50 USD), hold it above the water, and capture the exciting moment that the huge tarpons jump out the water on video.

The Atlantic tarpons, protected by law in Belize, can grow up to 8 feet (~2.5 meters) or 300 pounds (136 kg), so we are talking about BIG fish.

Be sure to set your video camera to slow-mo and the footage will come out great.

I screamed every single time I did it, but it was a lot of fun.

It didn’t hurt, just felt like a little suction on my hand every time the tarpon ate the bait from my hands.

You never know when the tarpon is going to jump out at you.

3:00 PM Lunch on Caye Caulker :

Lunch is not included in the price of the tour, but you can enjoy affordable, amazing fresh-grilled lobster for only $20 USD.

There are quite a few local food spots to try out all over Caye Caulker!

4:00 PM Sunset Sail : 

Cruise back to Ambergris Caye on this relaxing 2-hour sunset sail.

There is more fresh shrimp ceviche available, and the drinks are always flowing. Keep an eye out for the playful dolphins in the water.

Before going on your Caye Caulker Belize snorkeling excursion, it’s essential to be mindful of the costs and make informed choices.

When it comes to booking your Caye Caulker snorkeling tour, you shouldn’t wait until the very last minute . 

Aim to book at least a day in advance, but the sooner, the better - ideally, one to two days before your desired date.

As for me, I'm a Virgo, a top-tier planner, if you will. So I booked this tour about a month before the actual date.

I had my heart set on celebrating my golden birthday with this exceptional Caye Caulker snorkel experience. 

Booking in advance ensured we secured the specific date, and having it scheduled the day before my actual birthday allowed for flexibility. 

In the event of unfavorable weather on our booked day, we had the option to easily reschedule, ensuring we wouldn't miss out on this extraordinary adventure during our Belize trip.

Whether you opt for a ferry or a tiny plane ride, arriving in Caye Caulker is part of the adventure.

The flights are only about 10-15 minutes from Belize City, but we chose the budget-friendly ferry option, even though it was about a 90-minute ride. 

The flights and ferries go from Belize City to either Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker.

They also go between the cayes. Decide which mode of transportation you'd prefer, taking into consideration costs and timing.

5. Respect the marine life:

We saved the best (and most important) for last.

While snorkeling, observe the sea life from a respectable distance.

Refrain from touching or disturbing the delicate Belize barrier reefs, and remember to wear reef-safe sunscreen to avoid spreading harmful chemicals in the water.

If you are looking for an easy snorkeling day for everyone this is the tour for you. Even if you can’t swim or it’s your first time snorkeling, everyone can snorkel with sharks and sting rays in 5 feet of water. The next stop is the south channel where you see a lot of corals and colorful fishes. There is also the famous moray eel Ivy and a turtle that wonders around this area. After the snorkeling we take you to the west side of Caye Caulker to hand feed some tarpons and view the seahorses. Come with us and let us take you away from all your stress!

The tour – snorkeling with the sharks and sting rays – was a phenomenal experience. Alongside this, the encounter with the tarpons, feeding them, was out of this world exciting. I would recommend this tour to anyone and plan to do it again myself sometime in the future. The guides were friendly, patient and quite helpful.

This tour was absolutely amazing! The tour guides here are extremely knowledgeable about the marine life and know the sea by heart! Safe for families, children, non-swimmers, etc. I would strongly recommend this unbelizeable tour!

Shark Ray Alley: A Summary

One of the most famous snorkeling spots in Belize is Shark Ray Alley Caye Caulker. It’s situated in the Belize Barrier Reef, which is the second-largest barrier reef in the world.

The best way to experience Shark Ray Alley to its fullest is to book a tour . It isn’t close enough to Caye Caulker to swim (and this would be incredibly dangerous) and you’ll need to be on a boat to experience it.

As previously mentioned, I highly recommend Nauti Time Tours .  Not only do they have knowledgeable guides who go out of their way to make your day as epic as possible, but they’re eco-friendly, visit all of the best spots in the reef and their prices won’t break the bank!

Most snorkeling companies will visit some other stops during the tour, including the Hol Chan Reserve, a sunken shipwreck and the colourful coral gardens. But for me, the highlight was Shark Ray Alley.

Do I need a tour to visit Shark Ray Alley?

Yes, you need a tour to visit Shark Ray Alley.  The Belize Barrier Reef is a protected area, and you need to be with a licensed boat to visit. 

But don’t worry, all snorkeling tours in Caye Caulker include Shark Ray Alley with their trip, so you won’t miss out!

What type of shark is at Shark Ray Alley?

The type of shark at Shark Ray Alley is a nurse shark. This specific type of shark can grow up to 14 feet long but is more commonly known to be around 9ft. They have strong jaws, although they are harmless to humans.

Nurse sharks like to swim near the sea floor, in warm and shallow waters.

Can nurse sharks hurt you?

Whilst they may look scary (with the infamous dorsel shark fin), nurse sharks are harmless and are easy-going creatures of the sea. Unless you purposely hurt or attack the shark yourself, it isn’t going to bother or harm you.

Our tour guide did tell us of a time when a tourist was aggravating the shark. He repeatedly told the man to leave the sharks alone, but the man ignored him, pointing directly at the shark’s faces.

The nurse shark then managed to suck on the man’s finger, causing him to lose quite a bit of skin. This is rare, and simply because the tourist did not listen to the tour guide, and angered the animals. This is the shark’s home, watch from a distance and be respectful!

Can you swim at Shark Ray Alley?

Yes! You are able to swim with the nurse sharks at Shark Ray Alley if you would like to. This is a personal choice, and you can sit and observe from the boat if you’d prefer.

When we stopped at Shark Ray Alley, we watched from the boat for around 5 minutes before jumping in to snorkel with the sharks and stingrays . We were in the water with the nurse sharks for approximately 30 minutes. The nurse sharks never came too close to us, and we didn’t feel in any danger whatsoever.

Can I see the sharks from the boat at Shark Ray Alley?

Yes, if you would prefer to watch the sharks from the boat, this is totally fine! You can see the sharks from the water’s surface and enjoy them in this way. It’s still worth booking a snorkeling tour to Shark Ray Alley even if you’re not going to swim in the water.

Ready to book this once-in-a-lifetime experience? Yay!

If you’re traveling during peak season to Caye Caulker, I recommend pre-booking your trip to Shark Ray Alley. The island is small, and it gets busy, quickly! You can send Nauti Time Tours an email to reserve your spot, and you don’t need to pay until the day. This just confirms that you have a spot and won’t miss out on this bucket list activity!

If you’re already in Caye Caulker, you can walk down to the Nauti Time Tour office to book (opposite the WaterJet International ferry dock), located at the La Isla Resort. It’s around a 30-second walk from the Ice and Beans coffee shop.

What to take to Shark Ray Alley

If you’re unsure about what to bring to Shark Ray Alley Caye Caulker, here is a quick list. Your tour company (especially a good tour company like Nauti Time Tours ) will provide all food and drink for you, as well as snorkeling equipment.

In addition to this, you will need to bring yourself whilst snorkeling in Caye Caulker :

• Suncream, at least factor 50 and it must be reef-friendly. The sun out at sea is hot, and you’re more likely to burn due to the reflection on the water. Keep reapplying suncream after each snorkel. Also check your suncream is reef friendly – any other suncream can directly harm coral and marine life.
• Swimwear, with something to cover your back and shoulders whilst you’re sitting on the boat . Why? It gets hot, and there’s little to no shade (apart from the small roof of the boat). Be sure to arrive wearing your swimwear as there won’t be anywhere on board to change.
• Sea-sickness tablets: the water around Caye Caulker can get choppy, and people are known to get seasick on the Caye Caulker snorkelling tours . Be prepared!
• A waterproof camera (a GoPro or an iPhone waterproof case) to take pictures and videos of all the epic marine life you’ll see
• Extra snacks …if you’re the type to get extra hungry.

As I previously mentioned, Caye Caulker is small. Really, really small. So everyone gets to know everyone, regardless of what hostel you’re at.

There’s also a lot of talk about the hostels, and what makes them great (or not so great). If you’ve done your research, you will have heard about Bella’s Backpackers . Well, yes, it might be known as the ‘party’ hostel, but it doesn’t receive the best reviews (in person and online).

I’ve met people who have mixed reviews about Bella’s. Some have loved it, whilst some have checked out early. Do your research and read the reviews , so you know exactly what you’re letting yourself in for! You can read some of the helpful reviews here.

If you’d rather avoid the chaos of Bella’s, I highly recommend:

• Go Slow Hostel: we stayed here for over a week and it was perfect. Clean, comfortable, and in the best location on the island (it’s actually on the street next to Bella’s). There’s a large area to socialise and meet other backpackers, which we loved. The wifi is a little hit-and-miss, but it’s worth it!
• Sophie’s Guestrooms: If you want a quieter stay. This hostel only has 5 rooms and has a real homey vibe to it.
• Tropical Oasis: for basic dorms but a good party and social vibe. Right next to Go Slow Hostel.

How many days should you spend in Caye Caulker?

If you’re visiting Caye Caulker for the first time, I recommend spending at least 4-5 days on the island. It’s one of those places that’s hard to leave, and the longer the better! There is so much to see and do in Caye Caulker, with some tourists staying for up to a week.

As backpackers, we arrived in Caye Caulker not really knowing what to expect. We were so surprised that we actually extended our stay by a week! And it wasn’t just us; we were surrounded by other backpackers who did the same. There’s just so much to do, people to meet, food to taste and experiences to be hard – and it’s hard to leave when you realise how beautiful it is!

Best backpacker travel insurance for Central America

If you’re visiting Central America as a backpacker, or even for a short vacation, it is  so  important to have  travel insurance .   And  if you ended up on a post that’s called ‘epic party tips’, you know (just as well as I do) that you  definitely  need travel insurance.

If you need medical help at  any point  whilst in Central America,  you need  travel insurance.

Is Caye Caulker a party island?

Not necessarily, but there are still some places to have a great night out. Caye Caulker is exceptionally small, so everyone tends to go to the same places in the evenings (including the locals; we recognised everyone in every bar!)

As backpackers, we started our evenings in Swings , a small bar with decently priced food and delicious rum punch. After Swings, most move onto Sports Bar. A typical dive bar, the Sports Bar hosts different events each night, ranging from Trivia quizzes to karaoke. Past 9pm, the tables are moved and the whole place becomes a dancefloor with a small smoking area on the beach.

After Sports Bar, most people either head home (it closes at midnight), or south to the Reggae Bar. The Reggae Bar is the only place on Caye Caulker that is open past midnight. It’s more of a club than anywhere else on the island, so if you’re not into overcrowded dance floors, head home at midnight.

If you’re hungry, the only places still serving food past midnight on Caye Caulker are the street food vans opposite the Reggae Bar. You can get hotdogs, burgers and nachos for under £5, so even if you’re not continuing the party, you can stop off for some food!

He would have made more money by allowing us to do the full day tour we had originally asked for, but he had OUR best interest in mind and suggested a cheaper half day tour instead. He was right! “ Best thing on Caye Caulker ”

We came to Caye Caulker as a base to dive the Blue Hole. We did that dive on the second day and, really just to fill in time, did the Caveman tour on our first day. As it happened, the Caveman tour was the best thing we did by far. The Blue Hole is ok - it's a bucket list item, but it's a long way away and you don't really see that much. But with Caveman, we saw manatees, Rays, dozens of nurse sharks (up close in the water), green moray eels, Dolphins, turtles, seahorses... The lunch was simple but good. And Caveman himself was v charismatic, safety conscious and cared about the environment. He genuinely wanted to protect the marine life (unlike some of the tour operators) and wanted us to have a good day (which we did). Highly recommended (but book ahead!) Nice job my 'brother from another mother'!

A Caveman Story|Caye Caulker

…we meet the ‘Caye Caulker Caveman’. He’s a solid guy, with dark frizzy hair that’s sun bleached white on top… and a big smile that stretches from ear to ear… … It turns out Caye Caulker Caveman is a true legend of the sea. The Best Places to Visit in Belize

B elize is small but mighty. The country boasts gorgeous landscapes, fascinating history, incredible biodiversity, and a deep and diverse culture that will attract just about any type of traveler. Whatever your interest might be, Belize is bound to have it. With so much to do and see, it might be overwhelming to know where to go or even where to start. Well, look no further: This is your ultimate guide to Belize's best places to visit. 

Ambergris Caye

Ambergris Caye is Belize’s buzziest locale. Visitors flock to the main town of San Pedro to relax on the beach by day and party it up by night. It's home to some of the best resorts, such as Alaia Belize .

Alaia is an all-inclusive that offers luxurious suites, and an impressive culinary menu, and has the only molecular mixologist in the country. While many might be tempted to not leave the beautiful resort, the town of San Pedro is worth exploring during the day to experience local Belizean food. Mountain Pine Ridge Forest

Located in Belize’s Cayo District, the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest is half pine forest and half jungle covering over 100,000 acres. This area is rich with wildlife, birds, and of course, plants. Only recently did the government begin building the first paved road into the area allowing travelers to explore this beautiful natural reserve. Hidden Valley Wilderness Lodge is a luxury eco-resort covering over 7,000 acres of the park. Guests can hike and explore the surrounding area, as well as nearby sites like the Mayan ruins of Caracol, which are still the largest human-made structures in Belize. 

This former fishing village is now a resort hot spot that has managed to hold on to its local Belizean flare. For a relaxing getaway stay at Naia Resort , where guests are given their private beachside villa. From delicious local dishes to a luxurious spa-like oasis, Naia has it all. Naia’s location is also ideal for exploring nearby neighborhoods to get a taste of local life.

Speaking of location, Placencia is on a peninsula in southern Belize this locale gives visitors equal opportunity to take tours into the rainforest and mainland Belize as well as to the nearby Silk Caye Marine Reserve. What's more, the nearby village of Hopkins offers opportunities for visitors to experience the unique Garifuna culture. 

If you want to get off the grid and have a private island experience then book a stay on Ray Caye . You can choose between beach cabanas or villas. The honeymoon suite even boasts a private plunge pool. You can borrow a kayak or snorkel equipment by day and enjoy the island’s blue light that shines at night to attract sea life ashore. The perfect spot for wildlife life lovers as Ray Caye is a sea turtle hatching location as well as attracts large birds of prey. If you can’t spend the night there is a smaller area for daytime visitors to enjoy a pool, a beach, and a restaurant where they grow the majority of the greens on the island. 

Caye Caulker

Consider Caye Caulker Ambergris' smaller, chiller neighbor. If you're more interested in a good book by the beach than bar hopping then head to this more laid-back alternative. No cars are allowed on Caye Caulker and everyone gets around on bikes or golf carts. This forces a slower, more relaxed way of life. So lie in a hammock and enjoy an ocean view with a fruity drink. If you’re still looking for a bit of adventure Belize’s barrier reef is still only one mile away!

San Ignacio

San Ignacio is the capital of the Cayo District and is known as the adventure capital of Belize. It has a small-town charm, offering local food markets and an Iguana sanctuary. But San Ignacio’s true appeal is its location. It is the perfect jumping-off point for any in-land adventure Belize has to offer. The Cayo District is famous for rainforest excursions or a day trip to the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve. There are also several Mayan ruin complexes around San Ignacio including Xunantunich and Cahal Pech. Travelers can enjoy cave tubing or the truly adventurous can venture out to the ATM Cave.  

Belize City

Belize City holds the country’s only international airport and services the port for all visiting cruise ships. It’s a shame that the majority of travelers are just passing through as Belize City holds a massive amount of history as well as culture. The Historic Belize City Tour and the Museum of Belize help visitors understand Belize's past and present. Animal lovers will be interested in the Belize Zoo, which focuses on rescued native species and provides them with large open habitats to roam. There are also many nearby attractions like the Altun Ha Ruins or the Community Baboon Sanctuary.

Hummingbird Highway

The Hummingbird Highway is one of four highways in Belize. But it is by far the most scenic drive in the country. It stretches 53 miles from the capital Belmopan to the town of Dangriga. The highway cuts through gorgeous views of forested mountains and tries to find what the locals call the “sleeping giant” hidden in the landscape. Along the way, you can also enjoy pit stops at caves, cenotes, and tons of local food options. 

Lighthouse Reef

The Great Blue is one of Belize’s most famous attractions. This UNESCO World Heritage site is the largest sinkhole in the world. Lighthouse Reef is made up of the surrounding cayes that border the sinkhole. You can visit the reef by boat or through a fly-over tour. Snorkelers and scuba divers flock to the great blue hole to see what they can find. The most visited Caye of Lighthouse Reef is Half Moon Caye, which is home to over 4,000 red-footed boobies.

Getting to this cave is not for the faint of heart. The Actun Tunichil Muknal cave, better known as the ATM Cave, was discovered in 1989 and offers a unique look into ancient Mayan rituals. Within this cave, visitors will find the remains of several sacrifice victims as well as ancient utensils, pottery, and other artifacts. However, getting to the cave is not a walk in the park. Visitors must go with guides and will have to complete a somewhat strenuous hike, multiple river crossings, swimming through submerged caves, squeezing through very tight spaces within those caves, and traversing up rock faces. And that’s only one way! If you’re physically up for the challenge, this is an incredibly unique experience and look into the past. 

Hol Chan Marine Reserve

Located near Ambergris Caye, Belize’s barrier reef is the second-largest coral reef structure in the world. While The Blue Hole is the most famous attraction in this barrier reef there is so much more to explore. Home to over 100 species of coral and 500 species of fish, you’ll also likely see nurse sharks, sea turtles, and sting rays. How Chan Marine Reserve welcomes visitors looking to snorkel, scuba dive, fish, or swim in sharks in its Shark Ray Alley.
