The Best Time to Visit the Seychelles Islands

Located approximately 930 miles off the eastern coast of Africa in the heart of the Indian Ocean, the Seychelles are a slice of heaven right here on Earth. They are beautiful year-round but the best time to visit is in spring or fall when the islands are less crowded and the weather is nearly perfect. The archipelago is made up of 115 tiny islands that are well known for their soft, white-sand beaches, crystal clear waters, and unique wildlife. It is a wonderful destination for travelers looking to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life for a while, providing a serene refuge to be as active or relaxed as they choose.

Some of the top activities include snorkeling and scuba diving , spotting wild giant tortoises, and hiking on tropical trails through lush jungles. Of course, you can also choose to soak up the sun on the beach and enjoy the local food and culture too. Make no mistake, the Seychelles are unlike any other place on the planet, deftly melding a laid-back island vibe with a distinct African influence.

Of course, if you're planning your own visit to this idyllic setting, the first question you probably have is when is the best time to go. As with most island destinations, there isn't really a bad time to visit the Seychelles but there are certainly some months that are better than others.

Weather in the Seychelles

Situated just south of the equator, the Seychelles have fairly stable and predictable weather all year round. There also aren't traditional seasons, with the year split into rainy season and dry season instead. January and February are the wettest months of the year, although showers are common from November through February. During other times of the year, tropical rains are a common occurrence as well, although they don't tend to last long.

The warmest time of the year runs from December to April, although temperatures are fairly steady all year long. In the Seychelles it is unusual for temperatures to drop below 75 degrees Fahrenheit or climb above 90. As a result, it can be warm, but cool ocean breezes make for a pleasant, comfortable experience.

Thanks to their geographical location, the Seychelles generally stay out of the path of the major cyclones that develop in the Indian Ocean. It is extremely rare for a major storm to hit the islands, which only reaffirms that it is a destination that is safe and comfortable just about any time of the year.

While weather conditions are favorable just about anytime, the so-called shoulder seasons are quite possibly the best overall time to visit the Seychelles. During the months of April and May the warmer, more humid weather has just passed, while in October and November it has yet to arrive. The result is extremely comfortable conditions that are optimal for exploring the islands.

Those months tend to be fairly quiet in terms of visitors as well, which makes the beaches, restaurants, and other attractions less crowded. It can also make it much easier to book a hotel room, tour, or active excursion, with the possibility to potentially save some cash along the way.

High Season in the Seychelles

Those looking to avoid the crowds may want to stay away from the Seychelles during the months of July, August, December, and January. That is the high tourist seasons, with thousands flocking to the islands to soak up the sun. Some of the smaller, more remote islands that make up the Seychelles are still relatively uncrowded, but expect the more popular areas to be extremely busy throughout those times of the year.

When to Scuba Dive in the Seychelles

As mentioned, the Seychelles are a great destination for scuba divers and are well known for the incredible azure seas, abundant corals, and fascinating sea life that sits just off shore. Fortunately, the scuba diving there is also excellent all year round with virtually no impact from the sifting trade winds or changes in levels of temperature or precipitation.

That said however, the clearest ocean waters are actually found during the shoulder seasons as well, further cementing those months as the best time to go. During April, May, October, and November, the visibility in the water is so clear that divers can see down to as far as 100 feet. There aren't many places on the planet that can claim that kind of clarity. This helps to make the Seychelles one of the best destinations in the world for divers — and even snorkelers — looking to spend a bit of time in the water.

Divers looking to swim with whale sharks will find that the best time for that activity is between September and November. If that's high on your list of "must-do" activities, be sure to plan accordingly.

How the Trade Winds Impact the Weather

The trade winds that blow across the Indian Ocean have a direct impact on the conditions in the Seychelles. From November through March those winds blow from the northwest, bringing warmer temperatures and more humidity with them. Meanwhile, from May to October the winds shift to the southeast, bringing cooler temperatures throughout that period.

Those southerly trade winds have another impact on the island that travelers should keep in mind as well. The stronger breezes during that time of the year often results in large amounts of seaweed being deposited along some of the beaches. So much so, that some of the more popular tourist spots could find themselves closed from time to time. It usually isn't all that difficult to find an alternative beach to spend some time in the sun, but it is important to be aware that this is a possibility before going.

Rainy Season in the Seychelles

From November to February, the rainy season brings frequent tropical storms and higher levels of humidity. Those storms typically arrive in the form of afternoon thunderstorms that can put a damper on outdoor activities. Temperatures also tend to be a little warmer at this time of year as well, although there isn't a lot of variance from month to month.

Events to Check Out:

  • Attend the Seychelles Ocean Festival: Held annually in December, this underwater festival celebrates the importance of the world's oceans.
  • Run the Seychelles Eco-Friendly Marathon in February.
  • Take part in the Seychelles National Fishing Tournament to raise funds for charity in April.
  • Enjoy the Carnival of Victoria to celebrate multiculturalism, diversity, and history on the islands.
  • Turtle hatchlings begin their march to the sea in January and it lasts until March.

Dry Season in the Seychelles

When the trade winds blow in from June through September, the Seychelles experience their driest and coolest time of the year. During those months, tropical storms can still take place, but they tend to be less intense and shift into the overnight hours, making the days less humid and more pleasant all around. This is a great time of year to go hiking, windsurfing or to whip out the binoculars and go birding.

  • Held in August of each year, the Seychelles Sea Turtle Festival helps draw attention to these aquatic creatures which call the islands home.
  • Visit the Cultural Bazar at any time of the year to immerse yourself in local culture and learn about island life from those who live in the Seychelles themselves.

The Seychelles Islands are beautiful year-round, but the best time to visit is during the off-season, in the spring or fall, when the islands are less crowded and the weather is perfect.

If you are planning on visiting two to three islands, plan on spending at least one week in the Seychelles.

The Seychelles are generally safe, however, there have been instances of non-violent burglaries and petty theft, as well as car break-ins and tourist robberies at night. If you use your travel smarts, you will be safe.

Best Times To Visit Seychelles

The best times to visit Seychelles are April, May, October and November. These months represent the transition times between the hot and humid northwest trade winds (from November through March) and the cooler southeast trade winds that define April through October. A visit during these shoulder months offers more mild conditions ideal for sunbathing, wildlife watching and scuba diving. No matter when you visit, you'll encounter temperatures averaging in the 80s. Overall Best Time to Visit Seychelles

The overall best time to visit Seychelles is from April to May. October and November are also great months to visit.

These periods sit between the two trade winds that hit Seychelles every year. April is one of the warmest months to visit. During April and most of May, you’ll experience little rainfall with a hot and humid climate.

Temperatures average 86F (30C) during this time frame. April is also before the high season begins meaning you can find lower hotel rates, and the islands will be less crowded.

April and March also offer a variety of festivals and events to enjoy. Carnaval International de Victoria is a must for travelers headed to the islands in April. It’s the largest festival in Seychelles and brings music, food, and good vibes to Seychelles.

Other fun events during the fall months include the International Deep-Sea Fishing Competition, Seychelles Arts Festival, and FetAfrik Festival. October and November also offer an excellent opportunity to visit Seychelles.

The primetime season is over, and hotels and airfare should be reasonably priced during these months. While October and November experience some rains, you’ll still get plenty of hot and sunny days during the spring months.

Cheapest Time to Visit Seychelles

Filip Fuxa/Shutterstock

The cheapest time to visit Seychelles is between October and April. During this time, you’ll find the best prices for hotels and airfare.

Late October starts the rainy season, and it extends until April. While it may rain every day, you’ll still find plenty of time in the sun during the rainy season. Seychelles’ rainy season is not as extreme as many other tropical vacation destinations.

Monsoon rains can be annoying but are rarely dangerous in Seychelles. The islands are safely tucked away from the cyclone belt. Only the most remote southern islands risk cyclone season.

The summer season also sees fewer tourists coming from Europe. The lack of tourism and rains helps lower prices to visit Seychelles. You should have no problem finding budget flights and hotel accommodations during the rainy season.

During the rainy season, it’s much easier to find flights and rooms. You won’t have to book your trip months in advance if you plan to visit Seychelles during the rainy season.

Least Busy Time to Visit Seychelles

The least busy time to visit Seychelles is during the low season, which begins in November and lasts until January.

During these months you’ll find hotels and flights are inexpensive, and you shouldn’t worry about overbooking. November marks the beginning of the northwest trade winds. This causes more rain to hit the islands.

Temperatures also tend to be a few degrees cooler than during the high season. While rains occur daily, they only last for a few hours. This means you’ll still have plenty of time to enjoy the beach, snorkeling, or fishing.

If you love wildlife, November is a great time to witness the hawksbill turtle hatching. Seychelles also hosts the Seychelles Ocean Festival. This festival brings underwater photographers together to capture the wonders of the seas surrounding Seychelles.

Worst Time to Visit Seychelles

T.Schneider/Shutterstock

The worst time to visit Seychelles is during the monsoon season, which typically lasts from November to March. These months bring heavy rainfall and increased humidity, leading to less predictable weather patterns and potential disruptions to outdoor activities.

The lush landscapes are undoubtedly a result of this precipitation, but the downpours and occasional storms might dampen the appeal for those seeking sunny beach days and water activities.

Additionally, rougher seas during this period may impact boat excursions, limiting access to some of the more remote and picturesque islands that make Seychelles a sought-after destination.

Beyond the weather challenges, the monsoon season also coincides with a higher likelihood of mosquitoes, which can be a concern for those aiming to explore the pristine nature reserves and wildlife sanctuaries that Seychelles has to offer.

Travelers seeking the quintessential Seychellois experience may find it more enjoyable to plan their visit during the drier months when the weather is more predictable, and the islands showcase their natural beauty in a more inviting light.

Smaller, outlying islands of the Seychelles

When is the best time to visit the Seychelles?

  • Month-by-month

The best time to visit the Seychelles is between April and May, or October and November, as these are the calmer periods between the two trade winds which hit the island each year. The northwest trade wind blows from November to March and the southeast wind from May to September. These winds cause seaweed to build up on some beaches, so it’s important to consider when choosing your hotel locations at different times of the year.

The temperature in the Seychelles is around 86°F all year round, with a mixture of sunshine and tropical showers, and sea breezes which disperse the humidity. However, the Seychelles’ positioning, just seven degrees south of the Equator and away from large land masses in the Indian Ocean, makes it very hard to predict the weather or rely on online forecasts.

Best Time to Visit Seychelles in 2023 (Ultimate Traveler’s Guide)

' src=

One of my favorite destinations of all time is Seychelles where I enjoyed a solo 15-day trip. At the time I planned the trip, I had no idea what the best time to visit Seychelles is and just planned a trip near my birthday.

What’s more, I was getting an amazing offer on a flight from Mumbai to Seychelles so without a second thought, I booked it. Luckily for me, I ended up here during good weather so I could enjoy my time on the islands here.

If you are planning a trip to Seychelles, then make sure you check the weather and climate in Seychelles and then plan it. In this article, I have shared information on the best time to visit Seychelles, what you can expect in different months here, and how to travel around the islands during your trip.

Best Time to Visit Seychelles

Due to the trade winds that Seychelles experiences, the best time to visit Seychelles are between the months of April to May, and October to November. These are the transition months between these two trade winds and the weather is slightly mild and pleasant in Seychelles at the time.

In April and October, the weather in Seychelles is slightly calm and warm with negligible rainfall which makes it the perfect time for swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving. The water temperature will be pleasant and you will be able to enjoy 30 meters plus visibility.

You can also enjoy other activities during these months such as sunbathing, bird-watching, swimming, and so on. So, if you are interested in water activities then these months are the best time to visit Seychelles.

On the other hand, if you don’t mind tropical showers, then you can plan a visit here during the months of December, January, July, and August. During the spring and fall season, it is offseason in Seychelles so you won’t have to encounter the large hordes of tourists.

So, if you wish to enjoy some quiet time on the beaches and find the cheapest accommodation deals then spring and fall is the best time to visit Seychelles.

Month-by-Month Weather Guide for Seychelles

Beaches in Seychelles

The average temperature in Seychelles ranges around 30°C throughout the year. So, this island nation experiences hot and humid climate most of the months. However, since Seychelles is situated just 7 degrees south of the Equator and is independently situated in the Indian Ocean, it is difficult to predict the weather here.

You simply cannot rely on the weather forecasts and have to be prepared for all kinds of weather during your trip here. Here is a breakdown of what you can expect and do during different months here:

January – March

This is the beginning of the summer season in Seychelles and the northwest trade winds start blowing around. As a result, one can experience a hot and humid climate here with high rainfall till February. You will still find a lot of tourists here during these months due to several festivals and events being conducted here including the Seychelles Marathon.

In March, you can see the northwest monsoon coming to an end but the temperature is still quite high around here. One of the best things to witness here during these months is the turtle hatchlings making their way from their nest to the ocean.

If you are interested in witnessing a sailing competition then plan a visit to Seychelles in January when the Seychelles Sailing Cup event is held here. During this time, you have a few activities open in Seychelles such as fishing, sailing, and snorkeling, and even diving starts from the month of March.

You will find the hotel and flight prices inflated during these months so book everything in advance to get the best packages and pricing.

April – May

As the humid northwest winds start blowing away from Seychelles and the southeast winds start making their way, the weather in Seychelles becomes slightly warm and mild. The temperature in Seychelles range between 27 – 29 degrees Celsius with a little breeze and rainfall.

April is the warmest month in Seychelles and the weather can be slightly hot and humid during these months. However, it is a good time to visit and you can also attend events such as Seychelles National Fishing Tournament and Carnaval International de Victoria here in April.

In April and May, you can also indulge in a lot of activities in Seychelles such as Bird-watching, diving, fishing, diving, hiking, sailing, snorkeling, surfing, and so on. During these months, you will also find the islands slightly deserted and cheaper hotel and flight rates. So, if you wish to plan a budget trip to Seychelles then this is definitely a good time to visit.

June – September

These are the months when the weather in Seychelles becomes a little cooler with less humidity and rainfall. So, this is the peak season to visit Seychelles to enjoy the cool, dry weather here and spend time on the beach. The temperature at the time usually ranges between 24 and 27 degrees Celsius and watching sunsets during these months is quite rewarding.

There are several events to attend during these months as well. You can plan a trip to attend the Seychelles Sea Turtle Festival and South East Monsoon Sailfish Tournament in August or the Seychelles Round Table Regatta in September.

If you enjoy adventurous activities such as surfing, hiking, diving, etc. then this is the best time to visit Seychelles. This is a popular time to visit Seychelles, especially the months of July and August so make sure you make your bookings in advance and be ready to pay high-season prices.

Also, the islands will be crowded with tourists but you will still be able to manage a few beaches that are beautiful and secluded.

October is undoubtedly the best time to visit Seychelles as you can indulge in many activities such as bird-watching, diving, fishing, sailing, and snorkeling at the time. Since this is the transition month, there are increased chances of rainfall and it is less windy at the time here.

This is also the month when the Hawksbill turtles start laying their eggs and you can also enjoy watching shark whales, migratory birds, etc. during this month. That’s not all, this is also the time when the SUBIOS Underwater Festival , La Digue Offshore Tournament , and Festival Kreol are celebrated here

In the SUBIOS Underwater Festival , they show many films, conduct several talks and competitions to display the extraordinary underwater life of Seychelles. And the Festival Kreol is a week-long celebration where they celebrate the Creole tradition and heritage.

Also, you can save a lot on the hotel and flight costs and will find more options available as it is an offseason to visit Seychelles.

This is the beginning of the northwest winds in Seychelles so the islands might receive occasional showers during this month. If you wish to avoid the wet season, then stay on the east side and be prepared for higher and humid temperature in Seychelles. This is also the month when you can still witness the Hawksbill turtles laying eggs and can enjoy sightings of the shark whales.

In November, you can also enjoy the International Fishing Competition in Seychelles which is definitely something to look forward to. Apart from that, you have several amazing things to do in Seychelles such as diving, fishing, sailing, snorkeling, and so on.

Although the weather in Seychelles in December is a little humid and there are greater chances of rainfall, it still receives tourists from around the world. This is the month when you will find turtles laying eggs on the beaches in Seychelles and locals celebrating several end-of-the-year festivals. If you want to celebrate New Year with a bang then you can definitely plan a visit to Seychelles in December.

In December, you can indulge in a few activities here as well such as fishing, sailing, and snorkeling.

Climate in Seychelles

Sailing in Seychelles

Seychelles is a tropical island that experiences a hot and humid climate throughout the year. However, there are different seasons that can be experienced here and here is everything you need to know about them:

Summer Season

The summer season Seychelles can be experienced between the months of December and March. This is also a heavy tourist season so the prices are high during this time for hotels and activities. However, if you are planning a summer vacation and don’t mind occasional showers then this is definitely the best time to visit Seychelles.

One thing to keep in mind when planning a vacation in Seychelles during this season is that December and January are the busiest months of the season. So, you need to book your accommodations in advance and plan the trip properly. If you are looking for a better month to chill out on the beaches in summer then February is a good time to visit.

Monsoon Season

The monsoon season in Seychelles usually lasts from November to March, December and January being the wettest months in Seychelles. So, if you are interested in dry vacation with plenty of sunbathing on the beach then you can plan a trip between May and July as those are the driest months in Seychelles.

You can still plan a trip to Seychelles in the monsoon season because most of the islands here aren’t in the cyclone belt. So, you don’t have to worry about any storms in this region. However, the weather in Seychelles in December is slightly more humid than the rest of the months due to the frequent showers. The rainfall is not excessive as in Mauritius or Maldives but it could definitely hamper your fun in Seychelles.

Winter Season

Honestly speaking, the best time to visit Seychelles is the winter season as it also happens to be the drier season to enjoy over here. The season lasts from May to October and it is a great time to plan a honeymoon trip here as well due to lower humidity than the rest of the year. The average temperature in Seychelles during this season is around 25 – 29 degrees Celsius in the winters.

July and August are the peak months in Seychelles so you will find a lot of tourists around here then and the prices are generally higher in the winter months. But it is also the best time to enjoy outdoor activities here such as surfing, scuba diving, bird-watching, and so on. If you are interested in exploring the islands and participating in water activities, then the weather in Seychelles in May is absolutely perfect for it.

Weather in Seychelles

Since Seychelles experiences a year-long tropical climate, you can plan a trip here anytime you want. However, different seasons will be suitable for different activities to do and will majorly depend on the month you choose to visit. You will also have to shortlist a few places to visit when in Seychelles according to the weather in Seychelles.

Seychelles’ weather is primarily governed by two trade winds: the hot and humid northwest trade winds and the cool southeast trade winds.

The northwest trade winds blow from October to March and the wind speed averages around 8 – 12 knots at the time. As for the southeast trade winds, they blow in the months of May to September when the wind speed averages around 10 – 20 knots, and the weather is slightly cooler and appropriate for sailing at the time.

These trade winds are also responsible for the seaweed build upon a few beaches, so you need to choose your beachside hotel carefully.

Anse Source D'Argent Beach

There is no particular best time to visit Seychelles as it depends on the places that you would like to visit and the things that you would like to do in Seychelles. However, I planned my trip during the month of May and it was definitely a pleasant time to visit. There were occasional showers but mostly the weather was clear and sunny during this time.

So, I could enjoy my time on the beaches here and could easily hike around the islands as well. Be sure to plan your trip well in advance if you wish to make the most of your trip here as well.

When’s the Best Time to Visit Seychelles?: At A Glance

Grande Soeur Seychelles

Look, any destination that sits as comfortably close to the equator as Seychelles is going to feel the full wrath of mother nature. Luckily for you though, the Seychelles is pretty decent (understatement of the year) at any time of the year.

Now before you go ahead and throw all caution to the wind, there are some important tidbits to keep in mind. First of all, thanks to splitting itself between two trade winds, not all months in Seychelles are totally equal.

From the end of November through to March, the Northwest Trade Wind brings the wet season. On the other hand, the Southeast Trade Wind turns the seas into a rough and tumble from May to September.

Considering the trade winds dictate much of what impacts your weather outlook for a Seychelles trip, you want to stay on their good side.

The Best Time to Visit Seychelles

What is the best month to travel to seychelles .

Remire Seychelles

If you ask me, the best time to travel to Seychelles is either from April to early May or October and early November. This is when I like to plan my own trips to the archipelago.

Which of these delivers the best time on the islands depends entirely on what you want out of your adventure.

Though, let me caveat this by saying I’ve been to the islands during January and July, months some would consider not that great, and the weather wasn’t terrible. But the shoulder seasons are your go-to for the best tropical trip possible.

When’s High Season in Seychelles?

Grand Anse

Undoubtedly the busiest months to visit Seychelles are December and February. This sits right in the middle of summer on the islands, and travel-wise, it’s the peak of the high season, which usually lasts till March.

As well as this, July and August are also busy months in the Seychelles. Summer is the best time to go to Seychelles for most holidaymakers, prices for almost everything skyrocket during this time of year.

You can expect travel costs, such as your flight tickets, to rise by a staggering 80%. This price hike also extends to accommodation, so decide where to stay in Seychelles early and book as far in advance as possible.

Although the potential knock to your budget might sound off putting, there’s nothing like experiencing the buzz of a Seychellois summer. It’s the holiday season for a reason, and the idyllic weather blends together to stir up some of that island magic I mentioned earlier.

So if you’re looking for the perfect winter sun destination to escape the cold, heading for Seychelles in the high season couldn’t be more of a great idea.

The Cheapest Time to Visit Seychelles

Little Ben Victoria Mahe Seychelles

The cheapest months to visit the Seychelles are May and September. Ideal really, as these are the among the best couple of months to visit.

Yes, the rain tends to be more promiscuous during these months, but showers rarely last longer than a few hours. And the reward for sitting through the downpour is hours of sunshine. So you can still enjoy beach life and island vibes without paying an arm and a leg.

The most significant savings during the low season revolve around flights to Seychelles. Just as much as prices rise during the high season, when the low season comes around, they drop by just as much.

For Epic Water Sports

Grand Anse Beach Mahe Seychelles

Look, not everyone is a pro windsurfer or a perfectly balanced kayaker, but if you’re even the tiniest bit of a water sports lover, head to Seychelles in June.

Not only do you get comfortable weather conditions, but the winds also pick up just enough to attempt (and enjoy) activities like kayaking, sailing, and of course, surfing.

To See the Seychelles Island Resorts

best time to visit seychelles

You can’t plan an adventure to the Seychelles and not include some time lounging underneath a stunning palm tree or diving into pristine waters.

And you may be wondering when is the best time to do this? The answer is April. Why? There’s no better time with almost no wind and very little rainfall.

For the Best Hiking

Outdoor lovers, if you want to go trekking while in the Seychelles, you’ll have to plan your trip for June.

The climate just does something unique with low humidity levels and cool breezes during this time. It is the ideal condition to trek through stunning places like Morne Seychellois National Park or hike to the Morne Blanc Viewpoint.

To See the Best Beaches

Anse Royale

Autumn is a no-brainer if you’re stuck with the question of when to travel to Seychelles for its mesmerising beaches.

From September to November, temperatures drop from average highs, and tourist numbers dwindle. This makes having iconic beaches like Beau Vallon Bay and Anse Source d’Argent to yourself that much easier.

Seychelles by Season

Four Seasons Resort Seychelles

Unlike many other spots around the world, the Seychelles has just two main seasons: Rainy and cool. Let’s explore them.

Rainy Season in the Seychelles

October – April

Eden Viewpoint Mahe Seychelles

Many people worry about visiting the Seychelles during the rainy season (particularly in January), but I’m here to tell you that there’s really no need to be apprehensive.

Sure, you might face a shower or two throughout the day, but the heat means that it clears up quickly and you can get back to sunbathing again.

Key Events and Things to Do in the Seychelles in Rainy Season

  • If you’re in Seychelles in December, you can’t skip (or miss) the Seychelles Ocean Festival , formerly the SUBIOS Underwater Festival. This promotes and celebrates marine heritage with exhibits, gala dinners, and film screenings.
  • One of the major events during February is the annual Seychelles Eco-Friendly Marathon. If you’re not up for much running, head out exploring attractions such as Vallée de Mai.
  • Amongst getting blissfully lost in nature, Semaine de la Francophonie, a week-long celebration of French culture, takes over the largest island of Mahé in March.

Pros to Travelling to Seychelles in the Rainy Season

  • At the very start of the rainy season, you’ll have the perfect conditions for scuba diving and snorkelling as the calm waters of October make it a must-do addition to any things to do in Seychelles list.
  • Seychelles in winter is the ideal escape from the cold weather normally associated with the chilly season.

Cons to Travelling to Seychelles in the Rainy Season

  • Considering the impending trade winds change that follows October, weather can be unpredictable.
  • January is the peak of the rainy season in Seychelles, with monsoons in full swing, so expect at least one heavy shower a day.

Cool/Dry Season in the Seychelles

May – September

Seychelles

So, you fancy visiting the Seychelles in the dry season? An excellent choice, I must say. Especially if you time it so that you’re there in May or the end of September.

During this season, winds blow from the south-east, and are a hell of a lot stronger than the ones that bluster throughout the rainy season. Temperatures also drop (though it’s still warm and sunny, don’t you worry!) which makes it a great time to hike without sweating too much.

Key Events and Things to Do in the Seychelles in Cool Season

  • It can be quite windy at this time, so it’s an ideal spot for water sports like kayaking and sailing.
  • There are quite a few celebrations in the Seychelles during the cool season, including the national holiday of the Seychelles on June 18th, the Festival of Classical Music, and a sailing regatta that is usually held in August.
  • The Praslin Culinary & Arts Fiesta is a huge celebration that happens mid September every year. Expect it to be extremely busy on the island.

Pros to Travelling to the Seychelles in Cool Season

  • The weather is the most significant advantage of the cool season as you get the hot weather, perfect for exploring, but without the rain.
  • May and September are some of the cheapest times to visit the Seychelles.

Cons to Travelling to the Seychelles in Cool Season

  • Dry periods (and sometimes droughts) in the Seychelles are now pretty common – the dry season is beginning to last longer.
  • Some months (June-August) can be extremely windy.

Soak up the sun all through the year in Seychelles

Seychelles is blessed with a year-long warm, tropical climate, it’s always a good time to visit, although different times of year may be better suited to your particular interests.

The best travel time for your Seychelles vacation is from May to October, when the weather is particularly pleasant. Island hopping, sunny beach days with pleasant weather, and snorkeling and diving are some of the top Seychelles experiences you can look forward to in this season. For winter luxury travel, Seychelles is the ideal destination with some of the world’s best hotels and private island resorts, offering diverse fun and entertainment options for the entire family.

During the Northwest Winds, it can be warmer with some rainfall. The humidity is more noticeable due to these higher temperatures. However, since severe storms are very rare in Seychelles, it is still perfectly fine to visit the islands at this time, although days are much hotter than in winter.

Best time to visit Seychelles: Climate

The climate of the Seychelles is determined by the winds:

  • Northwest Winds:  November – April
  • Southeast Winds:  May – October

The climate in Seychelles is tropical. It is warm through the year, between 75°F – 86°F. There is high humidity, but thanks to the fresh sea breeze the impact of the heat reduces, making the climate largely pleasant. The Indian Ocean attracts year-round temperatures of 78°F.

Two opposing trade winds generally govern the weather pattern: the north-westerly trades blow from October to March when wind speeds average from 8 to 12 knots; and the brisker south-easterly trades blow from May to September with winds of between 10 to 20 knots, bringing the cooler and windier conditions ideal for sailing.

The periods of calm between the trades produce fairly warm and wind-free conditions throughout April and also in October. Conditions for swimming, snorkeling and especially diving are superb during April/May and October/November when the water temperature sometimes reaches 85ºF and visibility is often more than 30 meters.

Seychelles Climate

When is the best time to go to the seychelles.

The best time to go to the Seychelles is generally between May and October thanks to the sea breeze which blows during this time. Those wishing to go diving or snorkelling may prefer to go in April, May, or the last three months of the year thanks to the increased underwater visibility during these months.

Another answer to the same question could be that there is no "best time to go", as the Seychelles benefits from high summer temperatures all year-round. Generally, the temperatures are similar to midsummer in Central Europe, although humidity often reaches 80% of even more. For this reason, many people find the aforementioned sea breeze a welcome relief.

Average Temperatures in the Seychelles

Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec 30°C 30°C 31°C 31°C 30°C 29°C 28°C 28°C 29°C 30°C 30°C 30°C Max 24°C 25°C 25°C 24°C 25°C 25°C 24°C 24°C 24°C 24°C 24°C 24°C Min

Other Factors to Consider

The Seychelles lies in the sphere of influence of the monsoon and trade winds , which may also affect when you decide to visit the Seychelles. From May to September, the winds blow from the south-east, while from December to March they blow from the north-west. The transitional period in April and October/November takes with it the sea breeze, so the Seychelles feels hotter during these months.

The trade winds may make conditions more pleasant above the water, but they do decrease visibility underwater too. Therefore, anyone wishing to go diving or snorkelling extensively during their holiday should choose April, May, October, November, or December for their trip. On the other hand, those wishing to go sailing or windsurfing should definitely time their trip for between May and October thanks to the comparatively calm weather conditions. Please note, however, that some beaches experience high tides at this time, making it unsafe to swim in the sea in certain places.

Climate in the Seychelles

The Seychelles climate is tropical, with daily temperatures of between 24 and 30 °C (75 - 86 °F). The ocean temperature stays at around 26 °C (79 °F) all year-round. Even in the early morning hours, the temperature in the Seychelles does not usually fall below 20 °C (68 °F). The equatorial location of the Seychelles determines the length of day. In theory, each day is almost exactly twelve hours long (6.00 - 18.00 local time), but there are usually between 5 and 8 hours of bright daylight each day, depending on cloud cover.

How much does it rain in the Seychelles?

The Seychelles does experience rain from time to time due to its tropical location, often in the evening or at night, but usually only for a short time. The wettest months of the year are generally December, January, and February, with the summer months of June, July, and August being the driest months of the year.

Seychelles Climate Tables

Trade winds.

Between May and September , the so-called south-east trade wind blows in this part of the Indian Ocean. The wind is mostly even, and provides a refreshing breeze on the beaches, disturbing the ocean surface too. Between December and February the north-west trade wind blows weakly on the Seychelles islands. Between these two periods, there is almost no wind, and the sea remains calm all the time. Thanks to their location, the Seychelles are never affected by bad storms. In fact, they generally only experience gentle breezes from such storms happening thousands of kilometres away.

The trade winds from June to September can bring with them seaweed , especially on Praslin. Although this may spoil the white, pristine beaches that some holidaymakers may have in their head, in reality it is a positive sign that the underwater world of the Seychelles is thriving. On the chart, you can see the worst-affected parts of Praslin, where you can expect to see a build-up of seaweed during the south-east trade winds. That said, the beaches on the other side of the island are generally free of seaweed, even during this time.

What is the best time to visit Seychelles?

The weather of Seychelles is influenced by northwest and southeast trade winds which cause seaweed buildup on many beaches. The southeast wind blows from May to September, while the northwest wind blows from November to March. So, the best time to visit Seychelles is during the shoulder months from April to May and October to November, when the influence of trade winds is the least . The temperature in Seychelles remains around 30 degrees Celcius throughout the year with plenty of sunshine, cool breeze and tropical showers. These months are ideal for wildlife spotting, diving and snorkelling. The weather in Seychelles is unpredictable and complex and it rains throughout the year. Seychelles' peak season   begins from May to September , which is perfect for sailing and windsurfing. During these months, Seychelles experiences most visitors from all over the globe and hence is over-crowded. On the other hand, November-March   is usually the low tourist season in Seychelles. During these months, the beaches are generally filled with seaweeds and hence, in case you travel during this time, you need to choose your hotel wisely. Seychelles also sees a busy tourist season from mid-December till January on New Year and the holiday season across the world.

Best time to visit Seychelles

This cluster of islands in the south west corner of the southern Indian Ocean is the epitome of island paradise. It has a tropical climate so you should expect year-round high temperatures and a distinct rainy season and dry season. The mercury rarely drops below the mid-20s in the winter (June to August); in the Southern Hemisphere’s summer (December to February) you can expect the temperatures to rise to over 30 degrees Celsius. This warmer weather coincides with the wet season, but although showers might be heavy, they rarely stick around for too long. And if it’s raining one side of your chosen island, it could be clear on the other. Thanks to its position in the open ocean far from any large land masses, it’s very hard to predict the weather, especially in the long term, so you can’t take online forecasts as a given. Here’s our month-by-month guide to the Seychelles’ weather and climate.

Seychelles Weather

Apr - may, oct - nov, seychelles weather by month.

The Seychelles in January January is the height of summer when the temperatures, humidity and rainfall are at their highest. Despite this, December and January in the Seychelles are a popular time to travel due the holiday season. If you’d rather avoid the rain, it might be worth considering a trip to the Maldives instead as it’s one of the country’s driest months.

The Seychelles in February The rainy season continues into February but there is less precipitation than in January or December. February marks the middle of the Hawksbill turtle hatchling season which usually runs from January to March. Seeing hundreds of tiny hatchlings make their way to the water from their nests is an amazing spectacle but some beaches may be off limits to give them the best chance to survive.

The Seychelles in March We recommend visiting the Seychelles in March, particularly later in the month, as the northwest monsoon ends. This means that there’s less rain but the temperatures will still be high. Any rain tends to come in short sharp bursts and clears quickly.

The Seychelles in April With hardly any breeze, the temperatures rise in April – it’s one of the hottest times of the year. April also the driest and therefore one of the best months to visit the Seychelles. If you like diving or snorkelling, head to the Seychelles in April to make the most of the perfect underwater visibility. The higher temperatures may mean that your time is best spent in the shade of a palm tree or taking a dip in the Indian Ocean rather than hiking through the pristine forests.

The Seychelles in May With the return of the winds, this time from the southeast, humidity drops in May but the temperatures in the Seychelles remain in the high 20s or low 30s. It’s another great month for snorkelling or diving with warm waters and great visibility. There are still rain showers but these tend to pass quickly.

The Seychelles in June The temperatures drop slightly throughout the Seychelles in June, but they’re still up there in the mid-20s. The wind picks up during the month and you’ll start to see surfers and windsurfers out on the water.

The Seychelles in July July is another dry month but again the winds will have increased. Beaches on the islands’ north and west coasts will be relatively sheltered from the wind. Due to summer school holidays and monsoon season in some of our other favourite destinations like the Maldives and Thailand, this is a very popular time to visit the Seychelles. You should book well in advance of your trip.

The Seychelles in August August is another popular month in the Seychelles because of the European school holidays. It is usually quite dry, however, one of the windiest times of the year and the conditions on the south and east coasts of the islands may not be suitable for swimming. There could also be more seaweed washed up on the sand at this time.

The Seychelles in September The winds die down in September, but there’ll still be a cooling breeze coming from the south east. The temperature in the Seychelles is an average high of 27 degrees. As September marks the end of the school summer holidays in Europe, this is a great time to get a good deal but make the most of the drier and calmer weather.

The Seychelles in October If you like snorkelling and diving, October is the best time to visit the Seychelles. The underwater visibility is at its best this month as there’s a window of time between the south east and north west trade winds.

The Seychelles in November. The wind changes direction from the southeast to the northwest in November and rainfall amounts increase in November. The sea will still be relatively calm and the visibility for snorkelling and diving remains good.

The Seychelles in December The northwest trade winds that arrived in November bring the rain in December – there’s a reason why the islands are so lush and green. Although this is not the best time to visit weather-wise, it is a popular time of year to travel, particularly over the Christmas and New Year period.

Summer travel months of June-August give the best weather conditions for enjoying the outdoors. Summer is the peak travel season in Seychelles, so some tourists would prefer to travel at other times of the year.

The spring and fall are excellent times of the year to travel to Seychelles. The months of April and October are the best overall times to visit the Seychelles Islands. These shoulder months sit perfectly between the trade winds and weather changes for rain. As a result, they have the best temperatures, water conditions, and fewer tourist crowds than in the summer.

When Is The Worst Time To Visit The Seychelles Islands?

Traveling to the Seychelles Islands can be great at any time of the year, depending on the activities you hope to do during your visit. The tropical climate makes it a relatively excellent place to visit year-round, but the least popular travel times are during the rainy season.

The worst time to visit the Seychelles Islands is in January, the wettest month of the year. The Seychelles experiences daily rainfall all year long, but these short showers can last slightly longer and become heavier downpours during January.

December is a popular time to visit the Seychelles Islands despite the rainy season since many people prefer a brief rain shower instead of a heavy snowstorm. Many tourists arrive for their holiday and New Year vacations for a wintertime getaway since it’s one of the hottest times of year in Seychelles, with temperatures in the high 70s to low-80s.

Travelers who want to avoid the busy travel season should not visit the Seychelles Islands during the summer months between June-August. These are the most popular months to visit the islands, so tourists can expect many more people in Victoria City, on the beaches, or joining the tours.

Visiting Seychelles In The Spring

Spring is one of the most beautiful seasons in the Seychelles. It’s the season following the rainy season, so the islands are at their most vibrant, with vegetation-covered cliffs, lush jungles, and colorful flowers everywhere.

The Seychelles transitions from wet season to dry season during the spring. The months of March, April, May are some travelers’ favorites to benefit from the hot weather remaining from the previous months, but without the rain. The tropical climate gives it hot days reaching highs in the mid-80s, although there can be more clouds remaining until whisked away by the soon-to-come tradewinds.

April is one of the shoulder months in Seychelles with very little rain and winds. It’s the peak of the transition season. It’s an excellent time to go scuba diving in the warm water temperatures. It’s one of the best times to experience the lush greenery blooming inside the Victoria Botanical Gardens or relax on the sandy shores of Petite Anse.

Springtime in the Seychelles is the beginning of the dry season while still taking advantage of weather effects from the winter. It’s a recommended time to visit since it’s before the peak travel season.

Visiting The Seychelles In The Summer

To encounter the best Seychelles weather, the best time to visit is during the summer. Known to have the ideal tropical climate, tourists can enjoy moderate temperatures in the mid-70s, cooled by the southeast trade winds. Summer is also the dry season in the Seychelles when there is very little rainfall compared to other months.

Summer is the peak tourist season in the Seychelles, with visitors arriving worldwide to experience the beautiful tropical climate. The cool breezes feel fantastic while trekking through the rainforests in Morne Seychellois National Park or hiking to the Morne Blanc Viewpoint.

The drier months in the Seychelles results in less humidity. As a result, the outdoors are much more comfortable when sunbathing on Anse Lazio Beach or exploring the attractions in Victoria City. It’s weather suitable for spending all day in to enjoy the wonderful outdoor activities in the Seychelles.

With the summer being the best months to visit Seychelles, travelers can expect bigger tourist crowds during these months. Tours and resorts are in higher demand during the summer from other tourists looking forward to indulging in one of the best seasons to visit Seychelles.

Visiting The Seychelles In The Fall

As the large tourist crowds start to settle from the summer, The Seychelles enters one of its shoulder seasons during the months of September to November. For many, it’s one of the best times to visit the Seychelles with perfect weather and more ways to experience the rich cultural heritage on the island.

Temperatures in the Seychelles during the fall months are comfortable between 70-80°F. In September, the southeast trade winds begin to fade, and in November, the northwest monsoon winds begin arriving. Visiting in October will give the best weather conditions with calm waters for scuba diving and snorkeling.

The fall season is the best time to enjoy the beaches in The Seychelles. There are much fewer tourists crowding the shores of Beau Vallon Bay and Anse Source d’Argent to give them a more secluded atmosphere. Alternatively, trek the tropical jungles on Bird Island for one of the best times of year for birdwatching.

Exciting public festivals and holidays happening in the Seychelles during the fall months make towns like Victoria City and other attractions lively with energy. In September, get a taste of the island at the Praslin Culinary & Arts Festival, or immerse yourself in the creole culture at Festival Kreole in October, or learn about island conservation efforts during the Ocean Festival.

Visiting The Seychelles In The Winter

Tropical weather averaging in the high 70s is always an excellent alternative to roughing it through the snowy winter months. But while it’s winter for many snowbirds arriving in the Seychelles from abroad, December-February is actually summer on the islands.

Arrive just in time to trade in your heavy jackets and snow boots for bathing suits and hiking boots. Winter travel to the Seychelles will let you arrive during one of the hottest, humid times of the year. But aside from the hot weather, there is one natural phenomenon to be mindful of during this season: monsoons.

December until February are the peak of the rainy season in the Seychelles. These are the wettest months, and you can experience heavy showers every day. Weather forecasts usually show daily rainstorms, but this unpredictable weather usually only lasts briefly before the sun re-emerges to dry up the wet island.

Winter is the perfect time to travel to the Seychelles. The heavy rainfall makes it ideal for seeing the different palm species in Vallée de Mai or the coconut plantation on La Digue. Victoria City is always exciting, with holiday visitors enjoying the local market, tea factory tours, etc.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the rainy season in seychelles.

The Seychelles Islands have two seasons: rainy and dry seasons. The rainy season is the shortest time of year, lasting from December to February, which is considered summertime in the Seychelles. This season is also the warmest and most humid time of year to visit the islands.

Rainy season happens in Seychelles because of the nearby monsoons arriving in the area at this time of year. In addition to northwest trade winds, the weather is very unpredictable during the wet months.

Seychelles has a tropical climate and rains all year long. On average, tourists can expect a short rain shower every day before the beautiful weather returns for the rest of the day. However, during the rainy season, the islands can get much heavier rains that last longer throughout the day.

Rain has never stopped tourists from visiting the Seychelles. December is one of the most popular times to visit the islands, which coincides with the rainy season.

What is the hottest month in Seychelles?

The popularity of the Seychelles as a year-round travel destination is thanks in part to its tropical climate. While tourist destinations in Europe and the US get cold and snowy during the winter, it’s the summertime in Seychelles, where the weather is in the 70-80s.

The cool breezes felt in the Seychelles are always refreshing. Tradewinds from different regions arrive throughout the year to cool off the islands. The hottest month in the Seychelles in April. April is a shoulder month in-between seasons. On average, the hottest time of year is during the rainy season, but much of the weather remains on the island until the trade winds arrive once again in May. The still air in the islands and humidity make it feel hotter.

How many days are enough to visit Seychelles?

Seychelles is a group of remote islands in the Indian Ocean. Travelers should expect to spend at least one week on the islands to take advantage of all they have to offer.

The remote location of the islands makes them accessible only via airplane or boat. Reaching the islands can take several hours of travel and must be accounted for during your trip.

Most people arriving in the Seychelles are immediately captivated by its beauty. Five to seven days is an excellent amount of time to visit Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue and still have time for side trips to other locations like Silhouette Island and Bird Island.

The Seychelles Islands have unpredictable weather all year long. While some times of year are better for avoiding rain, it’s still a frequent occurrence. In case rain cancels some of your travel plans, having a few extra days on the island is helpful for rescheduling and making sure you do everything on your island bucket list.

Which is better the Maldives or the Seychelles?

The Maldives and the Seychelles Islands are often confusing for travelers. Both are island countries consisting of archipelagos; however, the Seychelles has 115 islands, and the Maldives has over 1,100. In addition, the island chains are both in the Indian Ocean, and many of the remote islands may be confused for belonging to the other country.

So, which is the better place to visit for a vacation? The Seychelles Islands and the Maldives offer similar tropical island experiences, so both can make excellent vacation destinations. The Seychelles has larger islands and more tourist activities focusing on experiencing the natural beauty on the island with hiking, snorkeling, and sightseeing. The Maldives is made up of several smaller islands, many with luxury, upscale resorts established on them to give their guests a relaxing getaway in privacy.

What are the best beaches in Seychelles?

White sand beaches tucked between granite rocks and verdant cliffs define much of the coastline of the Seychelles Islands. Whether visiting one of the main islands like Mahé and Praslin or chartering a private yacht to a remote island for an exclusive beach experience, the Seychelles islands have beaches to suit every traveler.

Go island hopping to visit the best beaches in Seychelles. While visiting Mahé, take a short drive from the capital to reach the popular Beau Vallon Bay or enjoy views of the large granite boulders decorating the shores of Anse Intendance. Catch a ferry to Praslin, where you’ll find Anse Lazio Beach and Anse Georgette. The best beach on La Digue is Anse Source d’Argent.

Each beach has unique characteristics and different times of year preferred to visit. For example, some shores may experience rougher currents during windy months, while the most popular beaches can get crowded with tourists during the peak season.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka?

Best time to visit Sri Lanka - Galle Face Green

  • Find a Cruise

The best time to visit Sri Lanka, which lies just north of the equator in the Indian Ocean, is between December and April, outside the monsoon season.

Sri Lanka has a tropical climate, meaning it is hot and humid year-round, but with distinct regional variations. There are two monsoons with a rainy period in between, and rainfall varies dramatically depending on whether you are in the north, the south, or the central mountains. The coastal lowlands are generally hotter than the mountainous center, with constant temperatures ranging from 84°F (29°C) to 89.6°F (32°C).

Generally speaking, December to April is the driest time in the south and south west, where you’ll find Colombo, the historic town of Galle, and some of the finest beaches. Days and nights will be warm and humid and there may be occasional downpours, but this is part of everyday life in the tropics.

Visiting Sri Lanka By Season

In June, July, and August, the yala , or southwestern monsoon, brings heavy rains to the south and southwest coasts, tailing off as the months pass. August, for example, receives 4 inches (103mm) of rain, just half that of July, which averages 8.1 inches (208mm).

While it’s raining in the south, the east is dry and sunny, making August a good month to visit the east coast.

During these months, the north of the island is also generally clear and sunny, and busy with visitors. It’s these regional variations that contribute to Sri Lanka’s success as a year-round destination; you can always find sunshine somewhere.

September, October, and November see the weather changing in Sri Lanka. Temperatures average around 86°F (30°C). The southwestern monsoon is usually over by September, a month in which Colombo receives on average 7.2 inches (184mm) of rain, but in October, humidity increases again and the capital can experience 14.1 inches (360mm) of rain.

The masa, or northeast monsoon, affects the north and east of the island between October/November and January.

Whale-watching in Sri Lanka

Whale-watching in Sri Lanka

December, January, and February in the south and southwest are peak season. Days are hot and sunny, and you can expect average temperatures of 86°F (30°C) and just 2.9 inches (74mm) of rain.

This is the best time for visiting beaches in Sri Lanka , for sightseeing, and for wildlife-spotting, as the coastal waters are abundant with dolphins and whales. Tea Country, in the central highlands, also experiences dry, hot weather during this period, although temperatures drop at altitude.

The island gets busy in December with visitors coming for their Christmas vacation (the island is mainly Buddhist but Christmas is embraced nonetheless).

The full moon in January is a busy time in Colombo, when the colorful Duruthu Perahera Festival takes place, commemorating the Buddha’s first visit to the island with lights, parades, and dancing. The world-famous Galle Literary Festival also usually falls in January or February.

March and April continue to be peak tourist season with warm, sunny weather and plenty of whale-watching. April 14 is Sinhalese and Tamil New Year, a time of great celebration.

May brings the beginning of the yala , or southwestern monsoon, when the south and west of the island can experience heavy rain; May, for example, sees around 14.2 (361mm).

Conversely, May is regarded as the best month to visit the “Cultural Triangle” of Dambulla, Anuradhapura, and Sigiriya, three UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the northern plains.

When Is Rainy Season?

Sri Lanka has two monsoons, one in the south, from late April to early August, and one in the north, between November and January. October tends to be a rainy month all over the island. May and October are the wettest months in Colombo, receiving an average of 14.1 inches (360mm) each.

When Is High Season?

High season in Sri Lanka varies according to region. In the south, where most visitors start their journey, December to April is regarded as peak tourist season. This is the best time to go to Sri Lanka for sunshine, clear skies, beaches, and marine life.

Elephants in Sri Lanka

Elephants in Sri Lanka

It’s also the best time for wildlife spotting on land. The drier conditions mean there’s less water in the wildlife parks and elephant, buffalo, and leopards are drawn to the watering holes.

When Is Shoulder Season?

Shoulder season in Sri Lanka falls between the end of the monsoons and the beginning of the dry season. In the south and west, this means August and September, after the southwestern monsoon, and to an extent, December, before the Christmas and New Year’s peak.

When Is Low Season?

Low season in Sri Lanka coincides with the two monsoons, so May to July in the southwest and from November to January in the north. October and November are the only months of the year when travel to the central hills is not at its best, because of overcast skies and sometimes heavy rain.
