BigBang’s Taeyang to Headline L.A.’s Krazy Super Concert

By Kristine Kwak

Kristine Kwak

A new global music event is coming to BMO Stadium in Los Angeles on Lunar New Year, Feb. 10. Taeyang of BigBang will headline the Krazy Super Concert, along with Lauv , (G)I-dle, and Zerobaseone. Pulse Events recently announced that Aespa and TheBoyz have joined the lineup as well.

TheBoyz, (G)I-dle, and Zerobaseone were part of last year’s KCON Los Angeles lineup, and both Aespa and (G)I-dle had L.A. stops during their tours last fall. Since their last Los Angeles performances, all four groups have released new music.

While the lineup is mostly K-pop, Lauv’s addition is also an organic fit. He collaborated with Minnie of (G)I-dle in the past for a joint performance of his 2022 track “ All 4 Nothing (I’m So in Love) ” and had worked with BTS on a track for his 2020 debut album, as well as a remix of BTS’s “Make It Right” the year prior.

Pre-debut [ ]

The group's formation was chronicled on the television series Big Bang Documentary , from July to August 2006. The show was also aired online on GomTV and on MTV Korea. After they received the "Artist of the Year" award from the M.net KM Music Festival and the Seoul Gayo Daesang Award, the group expanded their activities into Japan, releasing mini-albums and airplay singles. Their material would not receive major promotion until the following year with the release of their first physical Japanese single, "My Heaven".

By the end of 2009, BIGBANG became the most searched artist in South Korea. They also became the first foreign group in Japan to receive the Japan Cable Broadcasting Award for "Best Newcomer", and the first from Korea to receive the Japan Records award.

Their concerts became more unique with this song, with the amazing fireworks and creative themes.

Releasing "Blue" and "Bad Boy" with their new, popular sense of fashion, they became more well known around the world. Fans adores their hair/hair styles, songs, looks, personality, fashion, and their concerts, causing Big Bang to spread out and receive more VIP's.

On March 6, 2012, their top song "Fantastic Baby" was released. Immediately, the viewer bar raised high, automatically being popular with fans on YouTube. Winning awards, raising fame, having fun, Big Bang became a huge success in the YG Family. A few months later, BIGBANG released the music video for their song "Monster."

BigBand (formed in 1992) is an iconic Norwegian rock and blues band, best known for the intensity and grandeur of their live shows, hailing from Oslo, Norway.

Band leader Øystein Greni grew up knowing he wanted to create music. Influenced by his father’s soul band Undertakers Circus, who had opened for Led Zeppelin, Greni was also inspired by the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Curtis Mayfield, as well as the punk rock of The Jam and Dinosaur Jr. Originally comprised of vocalist and guitarist Greni, bassist Erik Tresselt, and drummer Crister Engen, the group embarked on a U.S. tour in 1993 soon after forming to raise their exposure abroad.

In 1995 BigBang issued their debut album “Waxed”, which despite gaining little attention, was followed by an impressive performance at the by:Larm music festival. The successful appearance led to the group to sign with Warner Music who reissued their sophomore album “Electric Psalmbook” in 1999. From the album, the single “Wild Bird” earned significant radio play and exposed the band to a wider audience despite failing to chart.

After a temporary disbandment, the band returned in 2000, to break into the mainstream with their Top Five hit single “Girl from Oslo”. Aided by the single’s success, the accompanying album, 2000’s “Clouds Rolling By”, peaked at No. 2 on the Norwegian Albums chart. The group subsequently released their follow-up “Frontside Rock ’n’ Roll” in 2002 in dedication to two friends and skateboarders who had died in their youth. The album, like its predecessor, reached the upper echelons of the chart, and was followed by the group’s first live album “Radio Radio TV Sleep” in 2003. Known for one of the greatest live shows in the world, “Radio Radio TV Sleep” introduced this auditory spectacle to a host of audiences and remains Norway’s highest-selling live album.

After a number of line-up changes BigBang released their fifth full-length album “Poetic Terrorism” in 2005, which also proved to be the group’s first No. 1 record. After the release of their sixth studio album “Too Much Yang”, BigBang moved to Los Angeles, California, U.S, and made their American debut with “From Acid to Zen” in 2008. The band has subsequently released the albums “Edendale” in 2009, “Epic Scrap Metal” in 2011, and “The Oslo Bowl” in 2013, all of which were No. 1 albums in their native Norway.

Live reviews

Frontman Oystein Greni has held together the foundation of the indie rock trio BigBang over the years, with the line up changing drastically, but maintaining his spot in the band. The talented musicians cerate drum bass beats cleverly on their acoustic guitars, and harmonise their vocals perfectly.

Whilst their live recordings are fantastic, I had heard from countless sources that they are exceptional live performers, and some have said they’re in fact Norway’s best live band. The band’s decision to write and perform in English has been beneficial to the group in their attempts to spread their music, as it’s much more accessible in English than Norwegian.

They opened with the track Smiling For, and performed lengthy guitar and drum instrumental solos, which also enabled Greni to introduce the band to the audience, and thank us for coming. The way that their voices blend and weave together demonstrates true talent, as the artists alternate seamlessly from soprano to alto and back again. Their talent is something that must be experienced live to achieve a comprehensive understanding of their sound. Their performance of the newer tracks from Epic Scrap Metal was phenomenal, and the highlight of the evening has to be when they played an unreleased track from their new album – simply magical.

When you’re renowned for being "Norway's best live band" as well as having the best selling live album ever to be released in Norway (Radio Radio TV Sleep) you can be pretty assured of being a good live band. Not only that they also have the backing of David Fricke of Rolling Stone magazine. Led by frontman Øystein Greni (a constant force in a changing line-up - and his dad’s band also opened for Led Zeppelin in 1968) the band play the kind of classic rock that is the most classic of classic rock: think The Byrds, The Beatles and the Stones – if your going to sound like bands from the past you should choose from the best. But Greni is takes their template and moves the songs into another place. Tracks like Girl In Oslo and Like Americans Do are stadium sized anthems – power chords and beefy riffs are in abundance and irresistibly simple choruses soar on Hurricane Boy and From Acid to Zen. From their debut Waxed right up to their latest The Oslo Bowl they have enough hits to throw at you and their live shows are all plaid shirts and good times. Earthy guitars and virtuoso performances – Welcome to the Mountains live is the best kind of foot tapping wig out you could ask for.

Will BIGBANG reunite at Coachella 2022? K-pop band on hiatus since 2016

With Coachella being one of the biggest music festivals, it is only fitting that BIGBANG, one of the biggest K-pop boy groups, would reunite at its 2022 edition. BIGBANG was one of the most popular groups and was responsible for the Hallyu Wave and bringing K-pop to the West with viral hits like ‘Bang Bang Bang’ and ‘Fantastic Baby’. Known as the ‘Kings of K-pop’, they have had a very successful career in South Korea, as well as internationally. Theirs was the first K-pop album to chart on Billboard 200 and swept global award shows like MTV EMAs.

BIGBANG was also mentioned by Forbes as one of the most influential celebrities and the band constantly topped major South Korean music charts. It had sold-out world tours and was even invited to prestigious events like the 2014 Asian Games. Following the K-pop group ’s last comeback in 2016, the group, unfortunately, started their military era. South Korean males till the age of 30 have to enlist in mandatory military service. They did drop one goodbye single titled ‘Flower Road’ in 2018 but that has been it from them till now.

BIGBANG’s reunion delayed due to the pandemic

Like everyone’s plans, the Covid-19 pandemic ruined the BIGBANG reunion we were supposed to get at Coachella 2020. The current four members have renewed their contracts with their label YG and assured fans that they are all still part of BIGBANG . And so fans are simply waiting for when we will get a comeback from them. Well, there might be some good news in 2022. With the pandemic getting under control, in-person events like concerts have once again resumed. In fact, we finally got some news on the next edition of Coachella.

The music festival has been in the news for the last couple of weeks. We first had indignant fans wondering why Jay Z would put down Michael Jackson by stating that he could never headline Coachella like Beyonce. It follows the news that Travis Scott has been removed from Coachella 2022 following the Astroworld festival tragedy. And with celebrities and media talking about Coachella 2022, BIGBANG fans are silently lying in wait to get some more information on the reunion comeback of the K-pop group.

BIGBANG at Coachella 2022?

Well, detective fans have been going through the information we currently have on the next edition of Coachella. With California finally getting control over the pandemic, the festival which is held in Coachella Valley in California is confirmed to be happening if no other untimely outbreaks take place from April 15 to 24, 2022. And while Travis Scott has been removed from the lineup, there have been no changes yet for the remaining artists that were supposed to perform in 2020.

And so, it seems that BIGBANG just might be reuniting at Coachella 2022. There have also been insiders reporting that the K-pop group is currently working on its next album with even the members hinting at something exciting that is coming soon. If they follow the footsteps of their labelmate Blackpink, BIGBANG just might release their next album a week before Coachella so that fans can get fresh music and performances. Blackpink released the iconic 'Kill This Love' in April 2019, a week before they became the first K-pop group to perform at Coachella in 2019.

  • Introduction

Dubbed as The Kings of Kpop and the emperors of kpop—BIGBANG (Korean: 빅뱅; Japanese: ビッグバン) is a three-member boy group under YG Entertainment that consists of global superstars G-Dragon, Taeyang and Daesung. They originally debuted in 2006 as a 5-member group. The group was formed through the show "Bigbang Documentary" and they eventually debuted with five members, including former members Seungri and T.O.P, in 2006 during the YG Family's 10th Anniversary concert at Seoul's Olympic Gymnastics Arena. With group's back to back hit songs and the members' incredible talent and charisma, they became a highly acclaimed boy group loved by fans of different generations, not just in Korea but internationally as well. During the group's hiatus in 2019, Seungri left the group and retired from the entertainment industry, leaving them with four members. On July 6, 2019, T.O.P was the first member to be discharged from the military, followed by G-Dragon on October 25, 2019. Taeyang and Daesung were discharged on November 10. In March 2020, all four members renewed their contracts with YG Entertainment. However, in 2022, TOP was revealed to have left the agency but will continue to be part of BIGBANG. The group is set to make their much-awaited comeback in April 2022. On May 31, 2023 T.O.P confirmed that he had withdrawn from the group and is no longer a member. This establishes BIGBANG as a 3-member group.

BIGBANG to Make 2022 Comeback & Release Date, But WHY T.O.P Leaving YG Entertainment?

Jihye Park

Despite the fact that YG Entertainment announced that BIGBANG would make their 2022 comeback very soon along with the possible release date, T.O.P was still leaving the company. What happened? Check out his reason below.

YG Entertainment Announced BIGBANG to Make 2022 Comeback & Possible Date

After years of anxiously waiting, “V.I.P” fans of BIGBANG can celebrate and shout in excitement! YG Entertainment finally announced that BIGBANG would make their 2022 comeback very soon.

On February 7, YG Entertainment officially stated that BIGBANG will be releasing a new song very soon. This will be the long-awaited return of the four-person ensemble, BIGBANG, after their last comeback in March 2018, “Flower Road”.

“BIGBANG will be releasing a new song this spring.” YG Entertainment.

BIGBANG to make a comeback in spring 2022.

BIGBANG is Preparing for New Music Video

Along with the comeback announcement, YG Entertainment also stated that BIGBANG has finished recording for their new song. Now, they are preparing for the filming of the music video.

“BIGBANG has already completed recording their new song, and they are currently preparing to shoot the music video.” YG Entertainment.

This is such relieving news for the fans because their previous “Flower Road” comeback didn’t have either any Music Video or promotional activities. Therefore, many people thought that “Flower Road” was their final song before disbanding. After all, the group had to go through a long hiatus because of the members’ mandatory military service, which they did in turns starting from T.O.P in 2017.

However, today BIGBANG proved that they have managed to return stronger as a group with their new comeback announcement in 2022. They have fulfilled their promise to their “V.I.P” fans that they previously conveyed with “Flower Road”: things will get better from now on, and wish us the best of luck.

And things truly have gotten better.

BIGBANG T.O.P Officially Leaving YG Entertainment

Unfortunately, despite the fantastic news of their 2022 comeback, BIGBANG member T.O.P has apparently reported to be leaving YG Entertainment. After 16 years of career with the company, T.O.P decided to move on to a fresh new start.

It doesn’t mean that T.O.P will leave BIGBANG too, though. In fact, YG Entertainment also stated that T.O.P will still participate in the group’s activities as long as the condition is suitable.

“As long as the conditions are right, T.O.P will always participate in BIGBANG’s activities whenever he is able.” YG Entertainment.

Why T.O.P Leaving YG Entertainment?

According to YG Entertainment, despite the fact that BIGBANG will make 2022 comeback, T.O.P decided to leave YG Entertainment to broaden his activities as a solo artist. And since he will be able to do it better outside of YG Entertainment, the BIGBANG lead rapper decided to leave the company.

Regarding this decision, YG Entertainment also further elaborated that he had come in agreement with the other BIGBANG members.

“T.O.P’s exclusive contract with YG has ended. Therefore, he will be taking on a wide variety of new challenges as both an artist and an entrepreneur. We respected his desire to broaden the scope of his solo activities aside from just his promotions with BIGBANG. Also, he successfully came to an agreement about this with the other members.” YG Entertainment.

When is BIGBANG 2022 Comeback Date?

Finally, as of today, the company has yet provided the exact date for BIGBANG 2022 comeback. However, since the group has completed recording the song and just started filming the music video, we can expect the BIGBANG comeback date to be sometime in April or May 2022.

Unfortunately, number of attendees and venue size aren’t consequences of quality but only of popularity. In K-pop, popularity and success isn’t synonymous of talent. Just look at Blackpink shows, huge numbers on expensive tickets, but they got on controversies over and over again due to lackluster performances, lack of synchronization, lip synching, lack of energy on stage and laziness. People complained a lot about that, but I think those people just didn’t know them well enough and thought “Hey, these girls are popular, their show is expensive, so they must be good”, but ended disappointed on what they got. They should have done their research before spending hundreds of dollar on a concert. They were paying to see one of the most popular K-pop group, and that’s all they can offer.

BigBang’s Comeback

The ‘Kings’ are preparing their comeback. And it’s not about BTS , but instead about BigBang. This name probably does not mean much to some people. However, it is one of the pioneer groups of K-pop. It paved the way for all the others who followed, including, obviously, BTS . BigBang was the first group to have millions of fans around the world. The Bangtan Boys now have much more but have benefited from media exposure that K-pop groups did not enjoy during the BigBang era.

“Flower Road”, the band’s last song, was released on March 13, 2018. It served as a goodbye song as the members went to complete their mandatory military service .

After a four-year hiatus, the group is coming back to a music industry that has completely changed and evolved. They rely on their long and brilliant résumé to make their return historic, worthwhile.

Table of Contents

A Successful and Commendable Career

BigBang is a South Korean boy band formed in 2006 by YG Entertainment . The group initially consisted of six members: G-Dragon , Taeyang , T.O.P , Daesung , Seungri , and SO-1 . The group having to count only five members, SO-1 being the most withdrawn of the six young men, was forced to leave the group before their official debut.

Their talents are manifold: singing, rapping, dancing, beatboxing, writing, and composing songs. In its beginnings, BigBang was a group of Hip-Hop/R&B but little by little their musical style expanded. They have become well known all around the world.

BigBang is also known for its unique clothing style. They have therefore become fashion icons , which many companies were snapping up to promote their products.

From 2006 to 2018, BigBang has released numerous albums, all of which have been very successful and have won them several prestigious awards. They have become one of the most popular bands in South Korea.

Before the release of their first studio album, three first single albums were released within a few months. The first one, simply named “BigBang First Single”, contains, among others, “This Love” (a cover of the group Maroon5) entirely written by G-Dragon. This single album entered the top 10 and sold around 55,000 copies.

The second single, called “BigBang is VIP”, was released a month after the first and sold 39,000 copies. By the way, BigBang fandom name is ‘VIP’.

Their third single album, “BigBang 03”, followed the path of the two previous opuses and sold 32,000 copies.

Between May and July 2007, BigBang made its first tour in Korea. The members gave concerts in five major Korean cities: Incheon, Daegu, Changwon, Jeonju, and Busan.

In August 2007, the group produced their first EP “Always”. BigBang gradually takes control of its music: G-Dragon writes and composes a few songs from the oeuvre. The EP is well received by critics and fans, especially the song “Lies”. It even became BigBang’s first hit, ranking number one on “SBS Inkigayo”, “MBC Music Core”, “ KBS Music Bank,” and “Mnet Countdown.” It retained, kept its first place in the charts for several weeks. The project was so successful that the group received several awards at the end of 2007, including the “Best Male Group” and “Song of the Year” from MKMF 2007.

In 2008, BIGBANG won the prestigious Daesang  at the 17th Seoul Music Awards .

The group’s second mini-album “Hot Issue” was released a few months later and met with similar success to the previous one. That, thanks to the song “Last Farewell” which, like “Lies” previously, allows the group to win the Song of the Month (December) in the Cyworld Digital Music Award against strong opponents like the Wonder Girls or F.T. Island .

“Last Farewell” will also remain number 1 on the charts for several weeks.

In August 2008, a third EP was released in Korea: “Stand Up”. It was created with the help of Daishi Dance and No Brain . As in previous albums, G-Dragon writes and composes the songs of the album with the exception of “A Good Man”, whose author is none other than T.O.P. The EP sold 120,000 copies. The songs all held strong positions in the Top 20 charts for six weeks: “Day by Day” will be number one, “Heaven” second, “Oh My Friend” ninth, “A Good Man” twelfth, and “Lady” sixteenth, making a total of five songs in the Top 20 for the group.

Subsequently, on February 24, 2011, BigBang made its big comeback, after two years and three months of absence in Korea. They released another EP, “Tonight”, containing 6 tracks. The mini-album was a huge success and BigBang took first place on all the charts and won on all the major music shows (Inkigayo, Show! Music Core, Music Bank, M! Countdown. Through this project, BigBang shows another side of the group and proves how the group has changed.

It was finally in February 2012, after the YG Family concert in Japan, that BigBang’s new mini-album “Alive” was released. It contains tracks with different styles ranging from classic hip hop with “Bad Boy” to more modern electro-pop like “Fantastic Baby”.

In April 2015, the label announced that after 3 years of absence, the group would return with a full album titled “Made”, finally released on December 13, 2016.

BigBang’s Comeback With Members’ Tarnished Image

Daesung

In August 2009, Daesung was the victim of a terrible road accident that forced him to give up his professional activities for a period of eight weeks.

Daesung was again the victim of another road accident on May 31, 2011, at around 1 am. The biker was already lying on the ground, victim of a previous accident. Daesung did not see him and rolled over him. The biker unfortunately died and after a month of investigation, Daesung is charged with manslaughter and speeding. At that moment, all the ‘VIPs’ were worried that Daesung would go to jail and BigBang be disbanded.

On August 31, fans are told that Daesung was cleared of all charges regarding the accident and that he would take the remaining months of the year to rest and do community work in a church. Meanwhile, the members were working on solo projects.

G Dragon

Following a new scandal, this time in 2011, involving G-Dragon and marijuana, YG Entertainment announced that all BigBang activities planned in Japan that year would be suspended until further notice.

In 2011, despite the group’s troubles over the course of the year, BigBang was nominated for the MTV EMA Awards in the “Best International Group” category, pitting them against Britney Spears and three other groups. Thanks to thousands of fan votes, BigBang won the “Worldwide Act” award.

T.O.P

In 2017, because of weed, T.O.P was sentenced to a 10-month jail term with a probation of two years and was ordered to pay compensation. He did some public service work at Yongsan Ward Office.

Seungri (The Most Important Case in BigBang’s Comeback)

Seungri

In September 2014, Seungri was the victim of a car accident, which forced him to be hospitalized for several weeks after a liver injury. His condition having improved, he was able to leave the hospital on October 18 and participate in the concerts of BigBang for the YG Family tour. A reporter claimed Seungri was drunk driving but the artist ended up winning that case .

In 2019, Seungri left the group and the music industry after facing a series of criminal and legal investigations earlier that year. In 2021, he was sentenced by a military court to three years in prison for pimping and charges related to a sex and drug scandal, authorities said. He was found guilty of illegal dealings in betting in luxurious Las Vegas casinos and of using prostitutes for people willing to invest in his nightclub Burning Sun (in Seoul ). The singer was also ordered to pay 1.15 billion won for the damages incurred .

bigbang's comeback picture

BigBang’s Comeback is scheduled to be in the spring, but with a handicap, disadvantage. They will no longer be 5, but 3 full-time. Seungri is facing a prison sentence. T.O.P left YG Entertainment but decided to participate in BigBang’s activities whenever he can. If BigBang wants to regain its leadership position, it will be up to them to take up the challenge.

Until the spring, don’t miss any news related to the world of K-pop, here !
