Looking to kill time? Welp, look no further. Here’s our lineup of the best, most useless websites on the interwebs.

Of the 1.1 billion websites that make up the world wide web, only 18% are currently active. Among those you’ll find the gem of gems — stupid websites that are active and carefully designed yet are absolutely, in the most amusing of ways, utterly useless.

We all need a mindless time-waster to allow our brains to bounce around in the background like old DVD screen savers.

From labyrinth mazes to trending cursor games, radio time machines, and hacker simulators, if that procrastination itch is coming about, itch it . Go on and give these wonderfully random websites a go.

Best useless websites

Here are 20 of the best useless websites you can find online.

1. Hacker Typer

Hacker Typer website displays a green terminal simulator screen with instructions on how to use the online simulator.

If you’re looking to cosplay like you’re in The Matrix , Hacker Typer is the simulator for you. Upon redirect, you’re presented with a dark screen with green text resembling a command-line interface quintessential to that of ’90s hacker films. And while the website is simply a simulator, it does make for a fun prank or troll.

2. Maze Toys

Bird's eye view of a digital maze game with endless meandering walls and start and endpoints indicated in red.

Be warned, this next one is a true time-killer. Not only is Maze Toys so fun for puzzle fanatics, but it’s one of the brainchildren of The Useless Web creator Tim Holland .

I’m quite the fan. It’s fun and interactive, offering three different maze games, Just Maze, Faultless, and Race the Clock, for us puzzle lovers looking to pass some time. Make sure you have free time; I spent 45 minutes playing around in Just Maze, a true time suck.

3. WindowSwap

Point of view from a windowsill shows a serene small farm nestled between a wildflower meadow and snow-capped mountain peaks.

Ahh, where does one begin with WindowSwap ? Is it weirdly voyeuristic? Yes, most definitely. But is it, at the same time... satisfying?

There’s great appeal: real-life video recordings of the POV from windowsills around the world... it’s grounding, connecting. It’s human.

According to their website, Window Swap is an artist venture where “people from around the world share the view from their windows to help someone else relax, focus, meditate, and travel without moving.”

Right now, I’m looking through Cara’s window; she has such a gorgeous view. It’s somewhere in Innerbraz, Austria. My heart’s happy.

4. Radiooooo

Interactive world map with iconography, music playback controls, and timestamps from 1900s to 2070 overlaid.

Ever curious to know what was playing on the radio in 1930s Paris? What about 1970s Taiwan? Yeah? Do I have the time machine for you.

Radiooooo is so, so cool. Simply click the decade and country, and you’ll be transported back in time, listening to the same lost music your grandparents once enjoyed in yesteryear.

This random website is such a neat concept; a fun, nifty way to come upon “new” old music to add to your playlist.

It’s available in whatever app store you’re using; give it a download or check out the site.

5. Pointer Pointer

Pointer Pointer is quite the random website. Move your cursor across the screen, wait about three seconds, and voilà, a photo of someone, something, or a group of someones will appear on your screen, pointing directly at your cursor.

Who are these someones? I’m unsure, but they look like pretty nice people from the early 2000s. As someone who was a child in those days, I’m a bit FOMO-nostalgic for those sweet and innocent pre-modern-social-media days.

6. Mondrian and Me

One blue, one red and three white squares overlap a canvas, creating an abstract geometric composition.

Brought to us by the same wonderful mind behind Maze Toys, Mondrian and Me is another fun, useless site with an artistic twist. This interactive point-click web page allows you to explore your “artistry” while killing time and indulging in some good ol’ procrastination.

7. Bored Button

A big red button in the center of the screen labeled 'Bored?' invites interaction with a cheeky text description positioned below.

Presenting a big, bright fire truck–red button upon redirect, the Bored Button is the only button on the internet here to cure your boredom.

Just click that big red button and see for yourself. The Bored Button will amuse you with endless fun and quirky internet games, memes, quizzes, and more.

8. Always Judge a Book by its Cover

Website featuring a yellow banner with thick, cursive text 'Always Judge a Book by its Cover' and a gag book 'How to Talk to Your Cat About Gun Safety' available for purchase.

Another brainchild of Tim Holland on our list, except this one isn’t a game, but rather a web page of weird book recommendations, cleverly titled Always Judge a Book by its Cover .

The perfect go-to site to find your next gag gift to order online, Always Judge a Book by its Cover houses titles like Toilet Paper Origami , How to Survive a Garden Gnome Attack , and Eating People is Wrong , as well as adult coloring books like Florida Man .

These definitely are the type of books you’d expect from a website with the tagline, “Some books win awards, some win our hearts and others ... only serve to confuse.” Well said.

9. Ffffidget

The ffffidget website is the internet’s fidget spinner. Ah, what a magnificently useless website! Add it to the list.

You click it and it spins, or stops spinning, and so on. If the virtual version doesn’t quite do it for you, don’t be dismayed. You can buy your very own real-life fidget spinner by accessing the hyperlink at the bottom right-hand corner of ffffidget’s web page.

10. Try PaP

If you’re in need of a silly grin or need to check your password’s strength, look no further than Try PaP . The brainchild of Tobias van Schneider and Tim Holland, the passive-aggressive password machine, or PaP for short, is not entirely useless.

A fun gag to test your password’s strength; simply type into the text box and, as Try PaP states, “Imagine your in-laws are helping you with a password ... this is what they’d say.”

11. Smash the Walls

Large neon-pink, hot pink, and yellow triangular shapes with stark, bold black outlines occupy the ends of a bright orange background.

Smash the Walls , or rather, click the colorful walls and watch them crumble to reveal another colorful wall, is another interactive yet incredibly useless website.

Nevertheless, if you’re into bright, candy-colored, neon graphic web pages that crumble and unveil the next, then have at it. This useless site is for you.

12. Weird or Confusing

Website featuring a pastel purple banner with shrugging emojis and thick, cursive text 'Weird or Confusing.' Below the banner is a photorealistic chicken nugget keychain gag gift available for purchase.

Looking to buy something weird or confusing beyond the bizarre books mentioned above? Tim Holland has you covered.

Whether you want to get lost in the depths of the bizarre items available on the internet or need an eccentric gift, Weird or Confusing is the useless website for this exact niche.

13. The Zen Zone

Gradient pastel blue, purple, and pink logo with black text, 'Welcome to The Zen Zone.' Below features descriptive text and a gradient pastel 'Let's get started' button.

Ah, The Zen Zone , another gift from Tim Holland. The Zen Zone is the perfect site to visit for a brief moment of quiet, meditative zen. Hey, not every useless website on the internet has to be absurd.

No cat GIFs with laser eyes, no doge memes or flashing wacky graphics — none of that. It’s just you and the wholesomely simplistic UI transporting you away to the zenest zones you’ll find online. Choose switch, swirl, or break ... and let the games begin.

From 101 to advanced, learn how to build sites in Webflow with over 100 lessons — including the basics of HTML and CSS.

14. Fish Feeder

Online game 'Fish Feeder' features a blue fish tank with rising bubbles, green swaying seaweed, text instructions, and buttons to select and play a level.

Creative Tech Guy ’s Fish Feeder is almost like a love letter to the early internet. Embodying the Microsoft Paint aesthetic of the early 2000s, Fish Feeder is a nostalgia-invoking, time-wasting treat. While not for everyone, if you’re into buying, selling, and breeding fish as you kill time, Jason O’Neill’s got you covered.

Web game 2048 features a beige background with 16 brown-beige square tiles arranged side-by-side on a 4x4 grid with instructions on how to play.

A fun high school throwback if you’re a ’00s child, 2048 was your sudoku. I, for one, remember being totally terrible at the game but hooked nonetheless.

As an adult, I quite enjoyed hacking away at the game — burning time as the dopamine in my brain danced about until I realized, oh yeah, I got work to do .

16. Scream into the Void

Photorealistic blue and black starry sky warps to resemble a swirling black hole with the text "Scream into the Void," instructions, and a large red button titled, 'SCREAM.'

Burn after writing? How about Scream into the Void . Type your deepest feelings, frustrations, concerns, or whatever’s got you and scream it into the void — quite the perfect alternative if you’re without paper or a lighter.

But maybe it's not as cathartic?

17. Neon Flames

Computer-generated representation of the cosmos highlighted with subtle hues of purple, yellow, red, and white.

Like The Zen Zone, Neon Flames can be described as a meditative zen. Brought to us by Jonas Wagner’s 29a.ch , this “paint your own nebula” web page is so cool.

Simply choose a color and drag your cursor across the cosmos, painting your very own nebula as you go along. The longer you hold your cursor, the brighter the color;  just a fun FYI.

18. Patience Is a Virtue

White loading screen displays gray text 'Loading, please wait' and a small, circular blue loading graphic.

Patience Is a Virtue is a wonderfully flippant web page, perfect for your next troll or April Fools’ Day. What is this magnificent beauty? A blank, loading web page.

Yes, a blank, forever-loading web page. To what?

Perhaps we’ll never know.

19. Endless Horse

A white screen displays a rudimentary key-stroke illustration of a horse with endless legs.

Endless Horse ; the lovely, lackluster cousin to the once-trending Long Doge Challenge.

While there are no “wows” or cute doge dogs, there is a pixel horse. And you’ve guessed correctly, the horse gets long. The URL speaks for itself: It’s the endless horse. What else would you expect from such a useless website?

20. Paper Toilet

Paper Toilet website displays a large, white toilet paper roll on a black background.

Topping off our list is perhaps the most useless website, Paper Toilet . Not to be confused with toilet paper. Paper Toilet is a web page featuring a single toilet paper roll on a black screen. Scroll, and the rest is weird internet history.

Make your own random website

The Useless Web

The Useless Sites of the Useless Web

The Useless Web is a fun and quirky website that randomly takes users to various other websites, most of which are bizarre, pointless, or just plain silly. It’s a great way to discover some of the weirdest corners of the internet. Have you stumbled upon any particularly amusing or strange sites through it?

Checkbox Race

By Demeo → Visit Checkbox Race

Checkbox Race is a playful website where you can create a race using checkboxes. It’s a fun way to see how checkboxes move across the screen as they compete in a race-like fashion. Each checkbox represents a participant, and they move at random speeds, creating a whimsical “race” of sorts. It’s a simple yet entertaining concept, perfect for a quick and amusing diversion online. Did you give it a try?

Checkbox Race: A Detailed Overview

Checkbox Race stands as a testament to the intriguing fusion of simplicity and engagement within the realm of gaming. This overview aims to delve into the core aspects of Checkbox Race, offering a comprehensive understanding of its genesis, unique attributes, and the driving forces behind its appeal.

The Genesis of Checkbox Race

Checkbox Race emerges from a fascination with the browser-native checkbox element. Its inception stems from an innate appeal toward the simplicity and immediate response of the checkbox interface. Initially conceived as “Checkbox Olympics,” this concept evolved into a standalone experience, driven by the desire to explore the potential of checkboxes within the gaming landscape.

Exploring Checkbox as a Game Element

The primary question that often arises is: why opt for checkboxes over alternative gaming elements like dropdowns or buttons? The allure lies in the inherent simplicity and familiarity of checkboxes. The distinct visual cue of the blue checkbox and its immediate feedback resonate with both developers and players, offering a unique canvas for game creation.

Furthermore, the utilization of checkboxes offers a canvas for creativity. It’s a departure from conventional gaming elements, allowing developers to reimagine gaming experiences through a minimalist yet impactful interface.

Checkbox Race embodies this fusion, leveraging the checkbox as a fundamental gaming element to create an experience that challenges perceptions of gameplay while retaining an innate simplicity.

The Appeal of Checkbox Race: Art or Game?

Checkbox Race blurs the boundaries between artistry and gameplay dynamics. It’s an experience that transcends traditional gaming paradigms. While it offers entertainment, the gameplay experience oscillates between being engagingly monotonous and subtly challenging.

This unique blend positions Checkbox Race not merely as a game but as an artistic endeavor. It invites players to explore the nuances of its mechanics, encouraging them to find enjoyment in the challenge presented by its seemingly straightforward nature.

Moreover, Checkbox Race’s intriguing amalgamation of simplicity and challenge often leaves players contemplating whether to categorize it as a game or a work of art, adding to its enigmatic allure.

Why opt for checkboxes over dropdowns or alternative options?

The native checkbox element in browsers has always held an inexplicable appeal for me. There’s something about the simplicity and immediate response of the blue checkbox that resonates. It’s a preference that’s hard to articulate—I just find myself drawn to it and inspired to create using this element. Previously, I delved into this fascination with an incomplete project, “Checkbox Olympics,” and now, I aim to develop a standalone experience.

Is there a practical application for a game?

It’s a bit of a quandary. “Checkbox Race” offers entertainment, but its monotonous nature makes it less about speed racing and more about straddling the line between art and game. Some might find it more annoying or challenging than enjoyable. However, there’s a subset of individuals who appreciate these unique qualities.

What’s the fastest completion time?

I’ve put this game through around a thousand test runs, mainly to ensure all components function as intended. If I exploit tabs (though I considered implementing something to flag this or prevent it), I can clock under 15 seconds. Otherwise, it typically falls within the 45 to 1-minute range. The timing relies a bit on chance and avoiding misclicks.

Is Checkbox Race open source?

Absolutely. Checkbox Race is open source, though I consider it fairly ‘complete.’ There’s room for tweaking with CSS accent colors and potentially enhancing the mobile experience. This project might not mark the end of my exploration into gaming with checkboxes—I’m intrigued to see where else this avenue might lead.

One Square Minesweeper

By Demeo → Visit One Square Minesweeper

It seems you’re referring to a Minesweeper game variant called “One Square Minesweeper.” In the traditional Minesweeper game, players clear a rectangular board without detonating hidden mines. However, the “One Square Minesweeper” concept isn’t commonly known in the classic Minesweeper gameplay.

It might refer to a modified version where only one square is safe to uncover, and all the other squares contain mines. In this hypothetical scenario, players have to identify the one safe square among many to win the game. Unfortunately, since it’s not a standard or widely recognized variant, there aren’t specific rules or strategies established for this version of the game.

If you have more specific rules or details about this “One Square Minesweeper” variant, feel free to provide them, and I’ll do my best to assist you further.

One Square Minesweeper

Why Just a Single Square?

Honestly, Minesweeper never quite clicked for me. I managed to win the smaller versions a few times, but the allure of a massive square housing a solitary, conglomerate mine intrigued me. Initially, I envisioned it on a larger scale, yet somehow, its charm amplified when condensed into a seemingly harmless single square.

How Was This Created?

This project lingered on my to-do list, primarily due to the daunting task of sourcing appealing images that aligned with the desired retro style. Fortunately, I stumbled upon an entirely open-source Minesweeper package boasting a comprehensive collection of assets and clear layouts. Streamlining it became more about eliminating surplus functionalities.

What’s the Win-Loss Ratio?

Regrettably (or perhaps fortunately), I haven’t been diligently tracking it. However, based on some observations from tweets, it’s evident that many users are inadvertently left-clicking the mine square, forgetting the crucial right-click action required to flag mines in Minesweeper.

Any Special Features?

Indeed! This project was part of Netlify’s Dusty Domains initiative, where every project launched on an old domain contributed funds to charity. Ultimately, it raised over a hundred thousand dollars benefiting various charitable causes.

Any Further Details?

(Laughs) Not really. While One Square Minesweeper is open-source, I’d consider it pretty much ‘complete’ in its current state.

Doughnut Kitten

By Demeo → Visit Doughnut Kitten

Doughnut Kitten” sounds like an adorable concept! It makes me imagine a tiny kitten curled up in a sweet, doughnut-shaped bed or perhaps a kitten with fur patterned like the swirls on a frosted doughnut. Wouldn’t that be just the cutest thing? If only we could have doughnut-shaped kittens as pets!

Doughnut Kitten

How I Entered the World of Web Development

In 2015, my life took an unexpected turn when I began experiencing episodes of intense facial pain. Sleep became a distant luxury, leading me to stumble upon The Useless Web one restless night. Intrigued by the quirky realm of digital art, I decided that my newfound diagnosis of trigeminal neuralgia wouldn’t dictate my path; instead, I resolved to embark on projects that truly captivated me.

The Genesis of Emoji Kittens: Domain, Code, or Imagery?

Following my diagnosis, Emoji Kittens emerged as my creative outlet. This collection cleverly blended classic kitten photography with emojis, set against soothing pastel backgrounds. A personal favorite featured a kitten nestled within the iconic Apple doughnut emoji.

The sequence of events leading to Emoji Kittens was serendipitous. After sharing my vision with a developer I met at a roller derby game, we collaborated to bring it to life. The domain was secured promptly, and the code followed suit.

Unveiling the Feline Stars: Behind the Scenes of Doughnut Kitten

To capture the enchanting images, we employed a 3D-printed doughnut-shaped prop, creating a secure setting for our feline models. The set even concealed a cozy pillow for maximum kitten comfort. The challenge lay in coaxing the kittens into desired poses – a task that involved a variety of toys, treats, and peculiar sounds to grab their attention and direct their gaze towards the camera.

Navigating the Challenges of Doughnut Kitten’s Development

Undoubtedly, the most demanding aspect of crafting Doughnut Kitten was the patience required for photographing these adorable but unpredictable models. During auditions, kittens would doze off in the prop, plunge headfirst into it, and playfully photobomb each other. Their whimsical behavior meant we had to be flexible and adaptable throughout the creative process.

Doughnut Kitten

It sounds like you’re working on a fascinating and visually captivating project that intersects art and science. Exploring histology to magnify your own cervical cells for an art collection that sheds light on HPV infections and their effects on cellular landscapes is a unique and thought-provoking endeavor.

What are you working on now?

The Mona Lisa effect you mentioned earlier, aiming to capture the gaze of kittens in a way that follows the viewer around the image, suggests a deep interest in capturing moments that engage and captivate the audience. It seems like you’re adept at conveying intricate details and nuances, whether it’s through the gaze of kittens or the microscopic world of cellular landscapes.

This new project, “There Was No Vaccine,” appears to delve into the intersection of medical science, art, and storytelling. It’s intriguing how you’re using your art to shed light on a health issue like HPV infections, portraying the vivid mutations within the cellular structures of the cervix. This approach has the potential to educate, create awareness, and evoke emotional responses in viewers.

Pug in a Rug

By Demeo → Visit Pug in a Rug

Pug in a Rug is a playful and alliterative phrase that often refers to the adorable image of a pug dog comfortably nestled or wrapped up in a cozy rug. Pugs are a small breed of dog known for their charming and affectionate nature. The phrase is often used in a light-hearted manner, perhaps as a cute and catchy description for a scene featuring a pug enjoying the comfort of a soft rug.

The whimsical combination of words makes it a popular choice for creative expressions, such as captions for photos or illustrations featuring pugs in snug or amusing situations. Overall, “Pug in a Rug” captures the endearing and humorous aspects of these lovable dogs.

First things first, is this your pug?

No, it’s not! The original photograph was discovered on Unsplash, credited to Matthew Henry. He boasts an extensive collection of adorable pugs nestled within rugs, all generously available under the Unsplash license. This specific pug in a rug served as the muse for this whimsical website!

How many levels ‘of pug’ are there in pug in a rug?

As of the current writing, there exist 19 distinct “levels of pug,” commencing as a junior assistant and swiftly progressing through the hierarchy to attain titles such as hermit, lord, or even king of pug! Although the current count is 19, the possibility of adding more layers to intensify the ascent has been contemplated. For now, let’s stick with the existing 19 levels.

Is there any special sauce in this site? How was it made?

Delving into the nuances, there are a few accidental intricacies that have yielded surprising effects. While idly accumulating your “honoring pug points” on the page, the level count continues to grow. However, if the tab is open but unfocused on another screen, the browser employs some clever tactics to conserve resources. Consequently, the counter may miss precise seconds, resulting in more seconds than levels—a serendipitous occurrence.

You can observe the creation of the pug in a rug in this video:

A second video enhances the interactive experience. By perusing the videos or inspecting the code, you can uncover some of the concealed levels of pug too!

So we have a horse, a pug, a pigeon, and cats… what animals are next on The Useless Web?

Valid observation. The Useless Web constitutes a virtual menagerie, with animal-centric sites often ranking among the most popular. Cute and eccentric animals prove to be irresistibly catchy, amusing, and memorable. There’s something about animals that sparks peculiar creativity in people as well!

If something seems absent, it might be frogs or turtles. I’ve entertained a couple of turtle ideas, considering their known languid pace fitting seamlessly into my pursuit of time-wasting, straightforward amusement. Keep an eye on this space!

Any plans for the future of pug in a rug?

Several ideas have been brewing, including the prospect of featuring different pugs in various rugs or exploring different dog breeds. However, at present, my allegiance remains with the classic pug in a rug! Perhaps a tool to legitimately boost your count could be in the works, but the energy might be better invested in something novel. Either way, stay tuned!

Find the Invisible Cow

Look for cows that aren’t there on the screen. Look around using your mouse or your finger to find the invisible cow. You can learn where your cow is hiding by turning up your audio so you can hear the shouting. Michael Berman, a programmer, is the game’s creator. The objective is to locate a cow on a white screen by moving the pointer around.

A voice can be heard screaming, “Cow, cow, cow!” Similar to the traditional “hot and cold” game, the screams increase louder as you move closer to the animal.

The Useless Web

It resembles a vast button you may click to access any number of websites, some of which you may already know and love and others with which you might be completely unfamiliar It is a list of some of the most pointless, meticulously arranged websites In 2012, Useless Web was introduced

Australian web designer Tim Holman, who is currently employed by Qwiki in New York, United States, built the website portal The Useless Web. The only thing that distinguishes The Useless Web is a banner that reads, “Please Take Me To A Useless Website.” You’ll be taken to some real hidden gems by clicking on Please.

Hacker Typer

On this website, you can learn how to hack like the stereotyped hackers you see in movies and popular culture. A few keystrokes on the keyboard will turn you temporarily into a hacker. Despite being a prank, this gives the impression that your computer has been taken over. These are the tools or applications that a buddy can use to make you a lurker. A straightforward web page that the subject opens is a hacker typer.

Paper Toilet

On a single-serving website, a toilet paper roll is shown wrapping and unwrapping as the user scrolls up and down. When website visitors come back after finishing the roll, they will be unhappy to see that it has not been refilled. All you need to do is scroll down to use the toilet paper and scroll up to refill it in the rewind.

Rozendaal developed more than a hundred “single-serving” websites, including papertoilet.com, which shows an image of a toilet paper roll that unravels as a user scrolls down the page until it runs out.

Users of the website can virtually go to many locations across the world. To acquire a random Street View from anywhere on the planet, the player only needs to click the “Go” button. You can select the nations you desire from the list provided in the options panel.

This website lets users virtually go to almost any random location in the world, discover new tourist attractions, and even add them to their trip wish list! If you adore traveling, don’t hesitate to check it out!

It offers social media messaging services that enable users to post and attach animated GIF images. GIPHY offers much more than simply GIFs, including Stickers, Arcade, and Clips. Here, you can input your emotion and press the “scream” button to see your words zoomed in and accompanied by a scream. You can find stuff that makes your conversations and stories more uplifting, enjoyable, and authentic on GIPHY.

In February 2013, Alex Chung and Jace Cooke launched Giphy. When the two were having breakfast and discussing the growing popularity of only visual communication, they had a concept for their company.

Staggering Beauty

A website for passing the time called Staggering Beauty is appropriate for people without a history of epileptic episodes. When you shake your mouse erratically, it has a wiggly worm that moves. A mind-blowing game and trippy time waster is Staggering Beauty.

The demo, which was developed by New Yorker George Michael Brower and has audio by Jon Baken, quickly gains popularity all around the world. It initially appears to be a moving animated worm that responds to mouse movements.

Bees Bees Bees!

The animated gif shows Oprah cheering and shouting as bees swarm into her crowd. This particular website is excellent at the squandering time. You can access the Bees Bees Bees website at beesbeesbees.com.

It is the 180002nd most visited website worldwide. It is the 70,149th most visited website in the United States.

It is a free online application that shortens your URL to one that is suspect and shady.  It will appear as though your URL points to a harmful website or computer malware. Instead of concentrating on shrinking a URL to the smallest size feasible to propagate it on a platform like Twitter, ShadyURL takes a standard web address and alters it to make it appear as evil as possible.

One primary concern with URL shorteners is that they conceal potentially hazardous websites. Some link shorteners, like Bit.ly, scan the links and alert you if they lead to harmful websites. ShadyURL avoids doing that. Instead, it takes what might be an excellent website and disguises it with a URL pointing to a malicious part of the internet.

Wayback Machine

You can get an early glance at some of the websites you like before they change their appearance (how it appears today). Once you enter a URL and select a date, this website will show various screenshots of that website from that specific time. Users of the service can view historical versions of web pages, which the archive refers to as a “three-dimensional index.”

The Wayback Machine already had over 10 billion stored pages when it first went online. The Internet Archive’s massive network of Linux computers houses the material. If we’re bored & have nothing productive to do, we seek ways to fill the time. Fun websites come to our rescue here, especially in times of global lockdown when we were left with only work-from-home possibilities.

A good time management skill might allow you to spend twenty minutes or a half hour just exploring. My work habits & tell me that exploring is more effective for me when I’m inspired when I see something interesting that will help me grow, even if I’m in the middle of another task. To avoid getting distracted, I’ve allowed myself to be distracted (unless I’ve set aside a block of time to work on a specific task). It’s not all the time, but enough to help me grow. Finding the right balance between executing and experimenting is key.

How Profitable Are Such Time-Wasting Websites in 2023?

Without a doubt! People look for breaks that will make them more productive while working constantly. In consequence of repetitive scrolling and stuff, checking social media accounts, emails, and so on will again bore them.

It’s for this reason that people usually look for more entertaining and fun ways to treat themselves during work breaks. There are a lot of time-wasting websites out there that are so popular that even visitors enjoy surfing them for hours.

As a result, such fun websites would be profitable.

Read a Bestselling Book

Some think this quickly boring, but really, they are too lazy to get a good book and read. Get a book of your best interest. Never try to read love stories because it will just make you sleepy. If you love cooking, it should be the best time to try out an exciting new recipe.

It is always fun to start preparing, following the instructions, and waiting to see the final results and even trying the dish out. This is a fun activity, whether you are alone or enjoying it with a friend.

Probably my best choice and suggestion. Why? You no longer have to read a book, sing a song or draw. Everything is in the movie, and it keeps your mind functioning and your heart beating. Watch any film of your choice. Horror, action, suspense, and comedy are the best types of movies. So sit back, relax, and enjoy! You will be surprised how everything happens quickly, and in the end, you'll end up spending a couple more hours to finish another one.

The next best thing to do to overcome boredom. You will not only kill time but also have a good rest; however, never do this in your office. You might get shocked to see your boss standing in front of you.

These are only some of the best things you can do to let time fly quickly, and if you would use your creativity, you can manage to discover tons of things that can keep you busy like getting a job. Getting a job is always one of the essential things that keep a person busy, especially if you're job is being an agent. Things To Do When Bored At Home On The Internet

There are many natural and profitable things to do when bored at home where you can use your free time productively and earn money online from a passive income. The best methods are those you undertake the initial work, and, apart from some monitoring and a few small tasks, you can sit back and watch as you achieve sales and profits.

One such secure method that anyone can learn and do is about offering products for sale on eBay. You should ask yourself if it is smart to sit around and waste another hour being bored at home when that time could be put to excellent use running your own eBay business, offering products to prospects who are actively searching for them?

With just a little time spent finding out what those that succeed on eBay do, it is easy to copy their business model then. It is a fact that the vast majority of sellers on eBay don't have much idea about winning selling strategies. Yet by understanding and adopting a successful selling model, a few sales can turn into a torrent of profits. And this can be achieved without actually having to have anything to sell yourself. The opportunity is there to offer a single product to a range of products, even opening your own eBay store. With the advantage of the internet, you do not also have to stock any of the products as you can utilize the use of drop shopping companies.

The best place to start when you ask yourself, "what will I offer for sale?" is to consider what you are interested in, what passion and hobbies you are involved in, and whether you can sell items related to that. It is always easier to start something new, which means your interest. That is because when you are faced with challenges, you do not lose heart and stop what you are doing. You won't see it as a chore because you should enjoy doing it and getting fun out of it. And even better, when you start to make some money from one of your interests, that is a fun thing to do.

eBay or Amazon are things you should consider for secure and profitable things to do when bored at home. The actual amount of time spent doing this is a decision you will make, though there is always the potential to create a profitable business from this, or perhaps you wish to spend a few hours per week and enjoy the profits that flow from that. It is up to you how big you want to take this opportunity, but don't be surprised if you find you have no time to be bored after you start selling on eBay.

Overcoming Boredom

Boredom affects people at home as well as at work. One should always be watchful of this and avoid it. The following ideas and tips can help you avoid boredom at work.

For those who are used to working hard, their job satisfaction and achievements are essential factors that give them happiness. Boredom at work can kill all of this and throw them into depression and hit their productivity too. We aim to present a few ideas that can be implemented to overcome such situations of boredom at work.

This is the best time for you to get on to the intranet and learn more about your company. You can get to know all about the organization you work for, including its policies, vision, and goals.

Understanding your organization's philosophy and culture gives you a chance to identify with your company and adopt the same values in your work life. Besides, it drives away your boredom at work.

The best solution to drive away boredom is to interact with others in your office and renew your relationship. Getting to know others and finding out where they stand in their careers will help you share mutual knowledge and experience, which may be useful for both of you.

If you do not find a challenge in your present job and are doing routine tasks, then it is likely that you will get boredom. As soon as you recognize this, you should ask for a job change or shift to another department and take up something new.

Changing some of the daily routines and doing things differently can add variety in your office life. Discuss with your team and explore ways to increase interactions and extracurricular activities can be another solution.

If the boredom and monotony at work are wearing you down, you must try to change your routine and do something that is more fun and which makes you feel good. It can be buying a new expensive watch or a bag or treating yourself to ice cream.

If you have learned the art of overcoming boredom in work and be a go-getter, then the sky is the limit. No one can hold you back from achieving that height that you set your eyes on.

100 Weird Websites to Visit When Bored in 2024

When the boredom bug bites and scrolling through social media seems too monotonous, why not indulge in something quirky? Let’s get ready to delve into the peculiar realms of the internet.

In this post, I present a handpicked list of 100 weird websites to visit when bored.

What are weird websites?

“Weird websites” refer to web pages that deviate from what one might consider “standard” or “conventional” online content.

These sites often challenge typical user expectations, presenting quirky, unusual, or unexpected content. They can be intentionally bizarre, serving no real purpose other than to entertain, amuse, or simply puzzle visitors.

Here’s a breakdown of what constitutes a “weird website”:

  • Purpose : Unlike most websites that serve a clear and definable purpose (e.g., news, online shopping, information dissemination), weird websites may exist purely for entertainment, to showcase a developer’s skills, or even to confuse or surprise visitors.
  • Content : The content on these sites can range from strange animations, unexpected interactivity, nonsensical text, or even bizarre games. The content often doesn’t follow typical website norms.
  • Design : Many weird websites embrace unconventional designs. This could mean unexpected user interfaces, peculiar graphics, or jarring color schemes. The design might be intentionally dated, overly simplistic, or complex in unexpected ways.
  • Niche audience: While some weird websites gain viral fame and draw large audiences, many cater to niche groups or remain relatively unknown. They’re the kind of sites someone might share with friends with the preface, “You won’t believe this site I found…”

Examples, as discussed below, include pages like Pixels Fighting, where pixels “battle” on screen, or The Quiet Place, which encourages users to disconnect and immerse themselves in tranquility.

The allure of these sites often lies in their deviation from the norm, offering visitors an escape from the usual internet experience.

Nine tools that let you randomly browse the Web

Want to browse the Web at random? We've got a small selection of tools that let you do it with speed and true unknowing.

random site visit

Digg's release of a pervasive, software-free toolbar last week brought with it a sweet little surprise: the capability to jump to a random site or story that was recommended by other Digg users. For a site that's run entirely by its community, this puts the power of browsing in the hands of an algorithm that does the deciding for you. Digg wasn't the first site to do this, though. So what are some other tools that let you randomly explore the Web? I've put together a few of my favorites below.

random site visit

StumbleUpon: Calling StumbleUpon just a random site generator may not be fair. While it does a great job of taking you to random sites, most of its links have been vetted by a large user base of people who go through and weed out some of the bad or outdated stuff. It's also got a built-in recommendation engine that will tune its "stumbles" to your tastes as you give sites a thumbs-up or a thumbs-down.

In addition to being able to use the site with a special toolbar that remains no matter what site you're on, you can get a similar experience right from StumbleUpon's site, which brings with it a software-free toolbar. You can also access StumbleUpon for sites, and video on various gaming consoles, including the Nintendo Wii, for which StumbleUpon coded a special version of the site to work with the Wii's remote and your living room's TV set.

random site visit

Mangle: Next to StumbleUpon, Mangle is one of the oldest sites on this list, having launched in early 2002. While it's not much to look at, it does a good job of letting you randomly hop to big sites, personal pages, images, and even maps. You can access all these verticals either through bookmarks, or by installing Mangle's browser toolbar, which also throws in the option to show random sites that match up with keywords you've entered. Worth noting, however, is that the toolbar hasn't been updated in a while, so it won't work with the latest version of Firefox.

random site visit

Delicious Randomizer: Delicious may be all about organization (which some people take to an obsessive compulsive level), but it's also got a wild side . It has a random links feature that will take you to a link that's either recently been created or bookmarked by another Delicious user. You can click on it again and again, and it will give you random results based on the pulse of the site. To do it, just save this link to your bookmarks toolbar or bookmarks list.

random site visit

DiggBar: Digg's software-free toolbar has a large, orange random button, which as you might guess, takes you to a random page. Where Digg differs from some of the other services on this list though, is that all stories or sites it takes you to have been featured on the front page of Digg.com. This may keep you from finding some real undiscovered gems, but for the casual user you at least know you're being taken to something worthy of a quick look.

random site visit

Google Toolbar: Users with the Google Toolbar installed can add on a special random page button that goes to a random site recommended by Google based on your past browsing history. It looks at what you've been searching for, and pulls up 50 related links, which it cycles through at random whenever you click the button. You can also hop to one of its suggestions by choosing from a drop-down menu, although the first option is way more fun.

If you don't feel like giving Google more of your browser than it already has, you can accomplish the same thing with this Firefox add-on , which also feeds from the same list.

random site visit

Minthink: Minthink generates a random site to go to with the press of a button. What's nice about this one compared to some of the rest is that if you're accessing it from its standard site, you can preview what the URL is before you click on it. However, if you're a Firefox user and feeling bold, there's an extension, and a script for Ubiquity that will take you directly to the site without you knowing what it is first.

That Random Website: This one may not be well and truly random since it's working off a database, but the folks behind it were smart enough to see the success of the Million Dollar Homepage and go for something similar by selling off slots at $1 a pop (which goes to charity). Every time you visit it or hit the refresh button in the browser it'll take you somewhere new, along with the option to hop back to That Random Website's homepage which makes it feel like a Web ring of yore.

random site visit

Random Website: (not to be confused with That Random Website) lets you click on a giant face to be hurtled towards a new site. You can also add any of your own URLs to its database, which will go out to other users after being approved by its creators. There's no fancy toolbar, but you can save its bookmark , which will open up a random site in a new browser tab.

Web-O-Random is another service on that list that isn't the prettiest, but it makes up for it with neat AJAX tricks. It will load up random pages in a frame on the bottom of the page with slick fades. It also has a carousel of alternate links if you want to control your destiny a bit more. Technology demo aside, I ran into some problems with it spitting out pages that either weren't alive anymore, or weren't in English, which may not be a problem if you've got Google Translate handy.

Any we missed? Leave them in the comments.

97. A Good Movie To Watch

Website: https://agoodmovietowatch.com

Very few things on the planet today are more interesting than movies. That’s why they’re a combined trillion dollar business!

Well A Good Movie To Watch is a website which curates thousands of movies and helps you immediately find movies you may like.

But wait, it’s not just IMDb. For starters, the movies are curated by real humans and not an algorithm. Secondly, it mostly houses those movies here which really are impressive and engrossing but for some reasons couldn’t do well at the box office.

It shows you movies randomly, and you can skip a movie if you don’t like its synopsis and check the next random movie out. Although it does have a “ Genre ” filter so you can tell the platform which genres you’re primarily interested in.

It also can be used to find interesting shows. Users can either click on “ The Latest ” to find new additions, or on “ Top Vouch ” to find movies which have been vouched by the community as the best.

Note that it’s completely legal so you can’t watch the movies there, those you’ve to obtain via legal sources. It simply lists you what might be interesting to you.

98. Wait, but Why?

Website: https://waitbutwhy.com/

The title by itself is interest-generating, isn’t it? Well the website is primarily a blog of sort, a really popular one at that with over half a million subscribed readers. Quite a  large fraction of them also pay monthly, or donate to the website frequently. However, it’s completely free.

So the website just talks (or writes) about interesting stuff. Or in other words, the admin(s) is capable of making even the simplest topics interesting. For e.g. the last post I read was “ It’s 2020 and you’re in the future “. Just the fact that we’re in the 2020 has been explained and elaborated in such a fun way that it’s no less than watching a movie.

It also hosts a number of unique photographs (and skills), series blog-posts about life, death, existence and just about everything else. There’s politics, Biology, Chemistry and everything else discussed in really not-boring ways.

Also, each blog posts seems really passionate. It may or may not be very scientifically correct, but the team does spend a ton of time designing graphs, heatmaps, charts, stick figures and other such elements to keep the post interesting and easy to understand.

Posts such as “ Which drugs should be legal “, designing a child and what not is available. All in all, if reading is interesting to you, this platform has a lot of interesting things to read about.

99. Akinator

Website:  https://en.akinator.com/

An amazing website which kills time, and surprises you at the same time. It’s supposed to be a “magical” website. You’re asked to think of one of three things at the start of the game, which can be a character, an animal or an object.

The website then leads us through a number of questions. For e.g. you need to answer if your character is real, its gender, his/her hair colour and other such personal details.

There are around 30 questions, maybe more. The website interface might be a bit clumsy, but once you’ve answered the questions it’s quite creepy how the A.I almost always comes up with a correct answer. I thought of the “Flash”, and that’s exactly what Akinator guessed, so creepy? Yeah.

100. Pixel Thoughts

Website: http://www.pixelthoughts.co/

So you’re bored? Nothing cures boredom as well as mediation (or so they say, someone does I’m sure). This website asks you to enter a word. Something that’s troubling you. You can even enter anything random.

Once done, the website plays really soothing instrumental music in the background. A star-studded background (literally) moves in animation. The word you wrote is embed on a sun-like circle. The circle becomes smaller with each passing second. The website keeps displaying motivational information/sentences on the top.

It’s a 60-second process. At the end of the 60-seconds, you’ll feel less-bored in the least that’s for sure. Unfortunately, the messages are identical no matter how many times you play the game/meditate. So it’s fun the first couple times but then not so much.

Man accused of punching seven random women in New York City is arrested

A man accused of assaulting random women in New York City was arrested Tuesday, police said.

Daquan Armstead, 31, of East Bronx, was taken into custody on suspicion of hate-motivated assaults on seven women from late March to mid-April in Lower Manhattan, police said.

Authorities allege he punched women, sometimes in the face, on their heads, or on their backs.

When asked about the allegations while being taken out of the New York Police Department’s Hate Crimes Task Force office, Armstead responded, "They spit at me." Police refuted the suspect’s claim that victims had spit on him.

It wasn't clear Tuesday evening if he has retained legal counsel. New York County Defender Services, which provides defense attorneys for many criminal cases, noted that a public record of his arrest was unavailable.

Armstead was arrested on suspicion of hate crime/assault; suspicion of attempted hate crime; and suspicion of aggravated harassment, according to the NYPD's Office of the Deputy Commissioner for Public Information.

Police told NBC New York there have been 95 unprovoked assaults in Manhattan so far this year, with 50 of them involving victims who are women.

At least one arrest was made previously in connection with a series of attacks earlier this spring that gained attention after some of the women told their stories on TikTok.

The allegations involving Armstead do not appear to be any of the attacks seen on social media.

The department released a timeline of alleged attacks:

About 8 p.m. March 24, police received a report of a 30-year-old woman who was struck on her face in the Lower East Side, the NYPD said. It was a hard enough hit that it caused dizziness, but she refused medical attention, it said.

The next day, shortly after 10 a.m., officers responded a few blocks to the northwest based on a report that a 36-year-old woman was struck on the back, the NYPD said. She also refused medical treatment.

Shortly after 8 a.m. April 2, officers responded to an incident in which "an unknown individual" struck a 38-year-old woman on the back of the head in Greenwich Village, the NYPD said. She also refused medical attention, it said.

About 12:25 p.m. April 5, officers responded to the Lower East Side, where it was reported someone struck a 25-year-old woman on the right side of her face, the NYPD said. She refused treatment, it said.

A few minutes later and a few blocks away, officers responded to the Lower East Side after it was reported that someone struck a 44-year-old woman on the right side of her face, the department said. She also refused treatment.

About 9:45 a.m. April 8, police responded to a report of a 24-year-old woman struck on the back of her head on the Lower East Side, the NYPD said. She refused medical attention, it said.

Shortly after 10:30 a.m. April 17, police responded to a report of a 27-year-old woman struck on the head by an "unknown individual" in Lower Manhattan, the department said. She refused medical attention, it said.

Steamfitters Local 638 union members Ronald Dioguard and Gary Zuto join 'The Bottom Line' to share why they're supporting former President Trump.

After getting to personally meet former President Donald Trump at their construction site, two Steamfitters Local 638 members said support for the 45th president is now "through the roof."

"We all love him," Gary Zuto said on " The Bottom Line " Thursday after meeting Trump that morning. "He takes care of the country, the country that we live in, and that's what we love."

"I see it on the job. Everybody's got Trump stickers on their hard hats," Zuto’s colleague Ronald Dioguard added. "They just see him as a passionate president for their country. It's undeniable how much he cares about the country. It's not even a question."

Crowds chanted "four more years" as Trump stopped by the New York City construction site to thank them for their support amid his ongoing trial.

Trump told reporters on the scene that he appreciated the "amazing show of affection" ahead of his appearance in Manhattan court and a key U.S. Supreme Court hearing on presidential immunity in Washington, D.C.

"I've been waiting for this moment for a long time," Dioguard said. "I was thrilled, couldn't even sleep last night knowing that he was coming."

"I thought it was a good look for him," Dioguard continued, "because I know Joe Biden can’t do that, just show up to a job site."

"There's no ice cream store near us," said Zuto.

Both union workers voiced support for Trump’s economic and energy policies. Most pressing for them, however, is the surge of illegal immigrants being housed in the Big Apple .

"These are the guys that are taking our jobs for $10 an hour cash. They're not putting [anything] back into the system," Zuto said.

"People are tired of paying for high gas prices. The food's out the roof. The interest rates are so high people can't afford to buy a house," he added. "People are sick of it and it's going all across the board."

A New Pacific Arsenal to Counter China

With missiles, submarines and alliances, the Biden administration has built a presence in the region to rein in Beijing’s expansionist goals.

By John Ismay ,  Edward Wong and Pablo Robles April 26, 2024

U.S. officials have long seen their country as a Pacific power, with troops and arsenals at a handful of bases in the region since just after World War II.

U.S. military or partner bases

But the Biden administration says that is no longer good enough to foil what it sees as the greatest threat to the democratic island of Taiwan — a Chinese invasion that could succeed within days.

The United States is sending the most advanced Tomahawk cruise missiles to Japan and has established a new kind of Marine Corps regiment on Okinawa that is designed to fight from small islands and destroy ships at sea.

The Pentagon has gained access to multiple airfields and naval bases in the Philippines , lessening the need for aircraft carriers that could be targeted by China’s long-range missiles and submarines in a time of war.

The Australian government hosts U.S. Marines in the north of the country, and one of three sites in the east will soon be the new home for advanced American-made attack submarines. The United States also has a new security agreement with Papua New Guinea.

Potential submarine bases

Xi Jinping, China’s leader, and other officials in Beijing have watched the U.S. moves with alarm. They call it an encirclement of their nation and say the United States is trying to constrain its main economic and military rival.

Since the start of his administration, President Biden has undertaken a strategy to expand American military access to bases in allied nations across the Asia-Pacific region and to deploy a range of new weapons systems there. He has also said the U.S. military would defend Taiwan against a Chinese invasion.

On Wednesday, Mr. Biden signed a $95 billion supplemental military aid and spending bill that Congress had just passed and that includes $8.1 billion to counter China in the region. And Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken traveled to Shanghai and Beijing this week for meetings with Mr. Xi and other officials in which he raised China’s military activity in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea, calling it “destabilizing.”

Mr. Xi told Mr. Blinken on Friday that the United States should not play a “zero-sum game” or “create small blocs.” He said that “while each side can have its friends and partners, it should not target, oppose or harm the other,” according to an official Chinese summary of the meeting.

Earlier in April, the leaders of the Philippines and Japan met with Mr. Biden at the White House for the first such summit among the three countries. They announced enhanced defense cooperation, including naval training and exercises, planned jointly and with other partners. Last year, the Biden administration forged a new three-way defense pact with Japan and South Korea.

President Biden, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. of the Philippines and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida of Japan walk down a White House red carpet.

President Biden held a trilateral meeting earlier this month with the leaders of Japan and the Philippines at the White House.

Yuri Gripas for The New York Times

“In 2023, we drove the most transformative year for U.S. force posture in the Indo-Pacific region in a generation,” Ely S. Ratner, the assistant secretary of defense for Indo-Pacific security affairs, said in a statement following an interview.

The main change, he said, is having American forces distributed in smaller, more mobile units across a wide arc of the region rather than being concentrated at large bases in northeast Asia. That is largely intended to counter China’s efforts to build up forces that can target aircraft carriers or U.S. military outposts on Okinawa or Guam.

These land forces, including a retrained and refitted U.S. Marine littoral regiment in Okinawa, will now have the ability to attack warships at sea.

For the first time, Japan’s military will receive up to 400 of their own Tomahawk cruise missiles — the newest versions of which can attack ships at sea as well as targets on land from over 1,150 miles away.

The Pentagon has also gained access rights for its troops at four additional bases in the Philippines that could eventually host U.S. warplanes and advanced mobile missile launchers, if Washington and Manila agree that offensive weaponry can be placed there.

The United States has bilateral mutual defense agreements with several allied nations in the region so that an attack on the assets of one nation could trigger a response from the other. Bolstering the U.S. troop presence on the soil of allied countries strengthens that notion of mutual defense.

In addition, the United States continues to send weapons and Green Beret trainers to Taiwan, a de facto independent island and the biggest flashpoint between the United States and China. Mr. Xi has said his nation must eventually take control of Taiwan, by force if necessary.

“We’ve deepened our alliances and partnerships abroad in ways that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago,” Kurt Campbell, the new deputy secretary of state, told reporters last year, when he was the top Asia policy official in the White House.

What Deters China?

Taiwan’s foreign minister, Joseph Wu, said in an interview in Taipei that the strengthened alliances and evolving military force postures were critical to deterring China.

“We are very happy to see that many countries in this region are coming to the realization that they also have to be prepared for further expansions of the P.R.C.,” he said, referring to the People’s Republic of China.

To some Chinese military strategists, the U.S. efforts are aimed at keeping China’s naval forces behind the “first island chain” — islands close to mainland Asia that run from Okinawa in Japan to Taiwan to the Philippines.

U.S. military assets along these islands could prevent Chinese warships from getting into the open Pacific waters farther east if conflict were to break out.

Leaders in China’s People’s Liberation Army also talk of establishing military dominance of the “second island chain” — which is farther out in the Pacific and includes Guam, Palau and West Papua.

But several conservative critics of the administration’s policies argue that the United States should be keeping major arms for its own use and that it is not producing new ships and weapons systems quickly enough to deter China, which is rapidly growing its military .

Some American commanders acknowledge the United States needs to speed up ship production but say the Pentagon’s warfighting abilities in the region still outmatch China’s — and can improve quickly with the right political and budget commitments in Washington.

“We have actually grown our combat capability here in the Pacific over the last years,” Adm. Samuel J. Paparo Jr., the incoming commander of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, said in an interview. “But our trajectory is still not a trajectory that matches our adversary. Our adversaries are building more capability and they’re building more warships — per year — than we are.”

Mr. Paparo said new American warships were still more capable than the ones China is building, and the U.S. military’s “total weight of fires” continued to outmatch that of the People’s Liberation Army, for now.

The Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty , a Cold War-era arms control agreement between Washington and Moscow, prohibited land-based cruise or ballistic missiles with ranges between 311 miles and 3,420 miles. But after the Trump administration withdrew from the pact, the United States was able to develop and field a large number of small, mobile launchers for previously banned missiles around Asia.

Even with the deployment of new systems, the United States would still rely on its legacy assets in the region in the event of war: its bases in Guam, Japan and South Korea, and the troops and arms there.

All of the senior U.S. officials interviewed for this story say war with China is neither desirable nor inevitable — a view expressed publicly by Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III. But they also insist that a military buildup and bolstering alliances, along with diplomatic talks with China, are important elements of deterring potential future aggression by Beijing.

Wang Yi, China’s foreign minister, told Mr. Blinken on Friday in Beijing that “the negative factors in the relationship are still increasing and building, and the relationship is facing all kinds of disruptions.” He warned the United States “not to interfere in China’s internal affairs, not to hold China’s development back, and not to step on China’s red lines and on China’s sovereignty, security and development interests.”

The new deterrent effort is twofold for American forces: increasing patrolling activities at sea and the capabilities of its troop levels ashore.

To the former, the Pentagon has announced that U.S. Navy warships will participate in more drills with their Japanese counterparts in the western Ryukyu Islands near Taiwan and with Filipino ships in the South China Sea, where the Chinese coast guard has harassed ships and installations controlled by the Philippines .

To the latter, Marine Corps and Army units already in the Pacific have recently fielded medium- and long-range missiles mated to small, mobile trucks that would have been prohibited under the former treaty.

These trucks can be quickly lifted by Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft or larger cargo planes to new locations, or they can simply drive away to evade a Chinese counterattack. A new flotilla of U.S. Army watercraft being sent to the region could also be used to reposition troops and launchers from island to island.

In an interview last year with The New York Times, Gen. David H. Berger, then the Marine Corps’ top general, said the service had begun analyzing strategic choke points between islands where Chinese forces were likely to transit throughout the Pacific. He said the service had identified sites where Marine assault forces like the new Okinawa-based littoral regiment could launch attacks on Beijing’s warships using these new weapons.

Philippines

Partner bases

The Pentagon announced in February last year a new military base-sharing agreement with Manila, giving U.S. forces access to four sites in the Philippines for use in humanitarian missions, adding to the five sites previously opened to the Pentagon in 2014. Most of them are air bases with runways long enough to host heavy cargo planes.

Plotting their locations on a map shows the sites’ strategic value should the United States be called upon to defend their oldest treaty ally in the region , if the Philippines eventually agrees to allow the U.S. military to put combat troops and mobile missile systems there.

One, on the northern tip of Luzon Island, would give missile-launching trucks the ability to attack Chinese ships across the strait separating Philippines from Taiwan, while another site about 700 miles to the southwest would allow the U.S. to strike bases that China has built in the Spratly Islands nearby.

In 2023, the United States committed $100 million for “infrastructure investments” at the nine bases, with more funds expected this year.

The Pentagon has forged closer military ties with Australia and Papua New Guinea , extending America’s bulwark against potential attempts by the Chinese military at establishing dominance along the “second island chain.”

The Obama administration moved a number of littoral combat ships to Singapore and deployed a rotating force of Marines to Darwin, on Australia’s north coast, giving the Pentagon more assets that could respond as needed in the region.

Last year, the Biden administration greatly elevated its commitment to Australia, which is one of America’s most important non-NATO allies.

A new multibillion dollar agreement called AUKUS — for Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States — will permanently transfer some of the U.S. Navy’s newest Virginia-class attack subs to Canberra . The location of the new bases for those subs has not been announced, but the first group of Australian sailors who will crew them graduated from nuclear power training in America in January.

These stealthy submarines, which can fire torpedoes and Tomahawk missiles, will potentially add to the number of threats Beijing faces in case of a regional war.

Just north of Australia, an agreement in August gave U.S. forces more access to Papua New Guinea for humanitarian missions and committed American tax dollars to update military facilities there.

To Admiral Paparo, this growing network of partnerships and security agreements across thousands of miles of the Pacific is a direct result of what he calls China’s “revanchist, revisionist and expansionist agenda” in the region that has directly threatened its neighbors.

“I do believe that the U.S. and our allies and partners are playing a stronger hand and that we would prevail in any fight that arose in the Western Pacific,” the admiral said.

“It’s a hand that I would not trade with our would-be adversaries, and yet we’re also never satisfied with the strength of that hand and always looking to improve it.”
