38 Black Chefs And Foodies You Should Definitely Be Following On Instagram

Grab a plate.

food heaven with table of vegetables

Whatever corner of the foodie world you find yourself in, though, it's important to make sure you're diversifying your feed. Food is a complex, emotional thing—so if all of the chefs and recipe pros you follow look the same or come from a certain background, well, you're missing out on valuable perspective and flavors .

"There are so many chefs and home cooks of color out there," explains Alex Hill, the recipe developer and cooking instructor behind Instagram's Just Add Hot Sauce . "They represent different styles and bring inspiration from their upbringing and unique experiences from their lives. Diversifying your IG feed can open your world and your palette to so many cultures. I’m an Afro-Latina and a lot of my food has that flare to it!" (Seriously, her curry lamb could warm up even the coldest of souls.)

BTW, it's a common misconception that Black chefs only specialize in dishes from the American South. So no matter what your fave kind of food is, you can actually probably find chefs of color who are self or professionally-trained in all types of cuisine around the world—and even better, have added their own flare, spices, or ingredients, to it.

Ready to eat? To find a new appreciation for the food on your plate and the people and stories behind your favorite recipes, give these 38 Black chefs and foodies a follow on Instagram. I promise, your taste buds will thank you.

Perfect Your PPC Marketing Strategy Paid Search Checklist

1. define your goals.

Are you aiming to increase web traffic or grow your social media presence? Figure out why you’re leveraging paid media in the first place and build your strategy from there. Having clearly defined goals in mind will help you focus on your brand’s key priorities.

2. Outline a TOFU/MOFU/BOFU Strategy

Designing strategies that cater to all three stages of the buyer journey ensures that you’re maximizing your brand’s reach. Every user at every stage is valuable—and you have to make sure you’re creating paid media content that speaks to each audience type.

3. Research Keywords for Search

Effective paid media is tied to targeting the right keywords. If you’re leveraging paid search ads to appear on SERPs (search engine results pages), then in-depth research is necessary. Bid on the keywords that are most relevant to your business to trigger only the most effective ad appearances.

4. Craft Engaging Ad Copy & Stand-Out Creative

Gather your team—because it’s time to start coming up with ad copy that wins attention. The key is to resonate with your audience and inspire engagement. Be real. Be relatable. And most importantly, don’t underestimate the power of creativity.

5. Create Conversion-Friendly Landing Pages

Do the landing pages on your website effectively push visitors further down the sales funnel? If not, you’re letting potential customers slip through your fingers. Optimize each of your landing pages so that they nudge users towards converting.

6. Choose Your Paid Platforms

The options are plenty when it comes to paid advertising, including Google, Meta, TikTok, LinkedIn, Microsoft, and Pinterest among others. Analyze who your target demographic is, research where it’s best to connect with them, and then target the platforms where you wish to build awareness.

7. Build Campaigns & Ad Groups/Sets

If you’re ready to build your paid media ad campaign, you’ll find that it will be further broken down into “ad groups” to ensure more effective pay-per-click advertising. These ad groups house one or more ads that have similar targets or categories. Let’s say your brand’s website features categories such as clothing, shoes, and accessories. Creating ad groups according to keywords that fall under these categories will help the PPC system decide when to show ads for these products.

8. Don’t Forget About Retargeting Ads

Retargeting ads are bound to succeed because it’s a second shot at a conversion. Visitors have shown interest in the product/service once before, and sometimes all it takes is a little reminder to push them to the checkout page. So don’t forget to retarget and aim better this time.

9. Run A/B Tests

In the world of paid media, what works and what doesn’t? You’ll have to run A/B tests to find out! Whether you’re testing which keywords bring more traffic or which social platforms earn more ad engagement, you won’t find out what really works for your brand until you test it.

10. Track Your Results

Revisit your initial goals. Did your efforts bring about the results you expected? Tracking results is an essential step in your brand’s paid advertising campaigns. The data you collect from currently running ads will help lay the foundation for your future campaigns.

11. Adjust as Needed

After tracking your results, you’ll be able to see where adjustments are necessary. There’s always room for improvement, so keep striving to consistently resonate and build trust with your audience—it’s how to create paid ads that pay off.

Food Influencers

Black Food Influencers Name Their Favorite Black-Owned Restaurants

Uproxx authors

Over the past half-decade, we’ve come to think of food differently through the lens of food influencers. Flat lays of brussels sprouts drizzled in a balsamic reduction are a far cry from the overboiled greens of our childhood. Powdered sugar suspended in tableau above a pyramid of plant-based donuts send us running to our air fryers , convinced we can recreate the delicate dessert scene. But who influences the influencers ? Where do they go for a bite to eat after they hang up their earth-toned aprons and head out for a night on the town?

While social media platforms have begun to prioritize equal representation for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color-owned accounts, we still don’t see as much representation of Black-owned restaurants . So let’s change that, starting today.

We asked Black food influencers to tell us where we can get authentic, incredible food from Black-owned restaurants, just *in case* that spiralized zucchini tagliatelle you made turned out to be a bit more work than the 20 second TikTok video made it seem.

Alexis Nicole ( @blackforager ) — Willowbeez SoulVeg in Columbus, Ohio

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Willowbeez SoulVeg (@willowbeezsoulveg)

Why Alexis Loves It: Vegan Soul-food is hard to come by, especially in the Midwest, but Willowbeez , which started as a pop-up and now is a brick-and-mortar in Cbus’ North Market, is a dream come true for folks like me who miss my Aunt’s cornbread. The owner, Carnell Willoughby, is one of the kindest people I know, who is so community-minded!

Melissa L Jones ( @foodtalksncolor ) — FishScale, Washington DC

View this post on Instagram A post shared by FishScale (@wearefishscale)

Why Melissa Loves It: The most savory and mouth-watering fish burgers can be found at FishScale , one of my top favorite restaurants. This Washington, DC-based and Black-owned establishment specializes in handcrafted wild-caught seafood burgers and they do not disappoint. From the rockfish burger to the king salmon, their creations are mindfully curated with integrity and environment in mind, two things I admire most. Pair Chef Brandon’s True Blue MD Crab Burger with his grilled Japanese sweet potato topped with a special plum drizzle, you’ll become a frequent fan like me!

Vallery Lomas ( @foodieinnewyork ) — Ginjan Cafe, Harlem, New York

View this post on Instagram A post shared by GinjanCafé ™ (@ginjancafe)

Why Vallery Loves It :

Gingan Cafe is a refuge of West African food and drinks in Harlem–from their signature Ginjan ginger-based elixir, to the tasty wraps and my personal fave–a sauteed mushroom, avocado, and plantain Kale Salad.

Jazzmine ( @dashofjazzblog ) — ChopnBlok, Houston, Texas

View this post on Instagram A post shared by ChòpnBlọk (@chopnblok_)

Why Jazzmine Loves It:

I love ChopnBlo k because they are introducing the West African flavors I grew up on to the folks who might not otherwise experience it. Black foodways are global and diverse, yet interconnected, and ChopnBlok is putting that on display.

Aaron Oliver (@seasonedandblessed) — Virtue Restaurant, Chicago, Illinois

https://www.instagram.com/p/CW_0cfcrRn1/

Why Aaron Loves It:

The macaroni and cheese at Virtue is some of the best in Chicago. The texture, consistency, and cheesiness are all top-notch in my book! I’ve always felt a special connection to Virtue Restaurant because of my relationship with my grandmother. Her love for me as a child was unmatched.

Every time I visit Virtue, the service and hospitality remind me of her which is something I’ll cherish forever.

Dawn Konofaos ( @alevrilife ) — Gabby Bakes (at Pure Kitchen), Tampa, Florida

https://www.instagram.com/p/CXZevY8pS58/

Why Dawn Loves Them :

I just love Gabby and Jonny! They are beautiful humans. Gabby is a super talented, baking nerd. She mostly bakes cakes, but at markets she has cookies and cute loaves and her pie flavors are amazing as well. She’s a fellow vegan baker and she also makes cupcakes. As a whole, the Tampa Bay area doesn’t have really good representation for any minorities in the food industry. It’s a really hard place for Black-owned businesses and POC businesses to thrive, but Gabby is awesome.

She also bakes cupcakes and sells them at Pure Kitchen.

Shanika ( @orchidsnsweettea_ ) — Mangoseed, Brooklyn, New York

https://www.instagram.com/p/CXeY7qCJZ7J/

Why Shanika Loves Them:

I love Mangoseed in Prospect Lefferts Garden in Brooklyn, NY. Coming from a Jamaican background, Mangoseed is the perfect rendition of Jamaican food meets an edgy new, innovative twist on Jamaican classics. Whenever I get a chance to eat at this restaurant, I often enjoy their take on Oxtails + Parmesan grits or a healthier dinner option — Jerk Salmon with Rice + Peas and sauteed spinach.

All in all, this restaurant brings me back to the amazing dishes that I grew up eating, but in a fresh new way!

Glenroy Brown ( @chefboyprince ) — Aunts et Uncles, Brooklyn New York

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Aunts et Uncles (@auntsetuncles)

Why Glenroy Loves Them:

My favorite Black-owned restaurant is called Aunts Et Uncles . It’s a plant-based Cafe/Bar located in Brooklyn NY. I love this cafe because it’s inspiring for me as a chef and wanting to own something similar to it. It’s small yet intimate, great ambiance, and is very welcoming.

The owners are a couple and I literally watched them build this cafe from the ground up. I used to get my haircut next door and every time I visited, I saw them working on it until it was completed.

I would definitely recommend this as a go-to spot to hang out, relax and kind of get away for the moment. The menu is limited but the bar, atmosphere, and people working there make up for it.

Doro wot 2

Doro Wot/ Tsebhi Doro ( Ethiopian/ Eritrean chicken stew)

Learn how to make Doro wot also known as Tsebhi Dorho, a special Ethiopian and Eritrean chicken stew with boiled eggs. This stew is served on special holidays and is a labour of love, so it’s a special treat anytime doro wot is served. This recipe serves more as guidlines so feel free to adjust as needed. Traditionally, we don’t use recipes or measuring tools to make Ethiopian/ Eritrean food but this should help anyone who loves Doro wot recreate this special dish at home!

Note: This recipe calls for a few ingredients that can usually only be found at East African stores like Mekelesha spice, Korrarima spice, Tesmi (Kibbeh) and Berbere (be sure to get this spice from an East African vendor because the Berbere sold in mainstream stores doesn’t compare!). You can replace the Tesmi spiced clarified butter with Ghee but it won’t have same flavour as it’s missing the spices).

Spicy Garlic Cookout Wings

This is my go-to wing sauce for summer cookouts because of how delicious and easy it is to make. You can also cook the wings in the oven and baste them with the sauce twice before you take them out.

I always tell my children that when they think they’ve minced the garlic, they should do it 5 more times. If you want a distinct wing sauce, use real garlic, not garlic powder.

Andros Crab & Rice

This is the most quintessential Bahamian dish, a rice so flavourful, “you’ll want to eat the spoon!” Andros is the largest island in the Bahamas (2,300 square miles), known as “The Land of Crabs.” It’s home of the annual crab festival and the birthplace of my grandmother, she made it best with the addition of coconut oil, earthy pigeon peas and salted beef.
