If you read Mileage Plan 101 on the basics of booking award travel, then you should know that Alaska Airlines has 16 different partners that can help you get almost anywhere in the world. However, award space can be limited, and the sheer number of possible itineraries on these longer trips can sometimes make it difficult to book.

Award Routing Rules

Mileage Plan has relatively generous award routing rules and in almost all cases provides one-way awards at half the price of traveling round-trip. The two exceptions are for travel on Delta Air Lines and Korean Air.

This brings us to the second rule. You can only travel on one partner in each direction, although you may choose to fly a different partner on the return journey (even if one of those partners is Delta or Korean Air). Mix-and-match awards add the one-way prices of each journey to determine the round-trip cost, or you may choose to book each one-way journey separately.

Finally, you may add as many connecting segments on Alaska as you need in order to reach your international gateway.

Choosing a Partner

Suppose you want to visit Europe this summer. Partners offering award travel to Europe include British Airways, KLM/Air France, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Emirates, and Icelandair. How do you choose?

intl awards 1

If you want to go to Paris, then Air France makes sense, but all of these carriers offer connecting flights to your final destination. The number of miles you’ll use can vary. Mileage Plan has a different award chart for each partner, so some might require more or fewer miles. Also, pay attention to fees, as some partners charge higher fees for their awards.

The biggest reason to pick one partner over another will likely be award availability and your need to compromise. For example, a search from Seattle to Munich found these awards on Emirates and British Airways.

intl awards 2

The seat icon on these business and first class awards indicates that they are “mixed cabin” itineraries. In the case of Emirates you’ll pay lower fees but need to spend the longer flight from Seattle to Dubai in coach. In the case of British Airways, you’ll pay higher fees but get to travel in first class; only the short hop from London to Munich is in coach.

Prioritize the Over-water Journey

One strategy is to ignore any connections for the moment. That short hop from London to Munich is fine in coach, right? So limit your searching to the longer flights you care about.

Travel to Asia provides a good example. Suppose you want to visit Bali, which is only served by one of Alaska’s partners: Cathay Pacific. Visiting their website reveals that it serves eight cities in the U.S. and Canada, so begin your search by looking at just these eight routes to their hub in Hong Kong. OpenFlights.org is another great resource that lets you search for routes by either city or carrier.

intl awards 3

Add Connecting Flights

With eight cities served in North America you will have eight different ways to book your trip to Asia. It’s okay if you don’t live in one of those cities. Once you find a city that has award space, look for a way to reach it with connecting flights on Alaska Airlines or Horizon Air. Do the same for your journey from Hong Kong to Bali with Cathay Pacific.

Once you find all these segments, you can piece them together into a single award. It doesn’t matter if you searched for them separately as they should still be available when you search for them together.

Be Creative Where You Look

Alaska Airlines doesn’t display award space on its website for two partners, Cathay Pacific and LAN, which means you’ll need to call to search for and book award travel with either carrier. This isn’t unusual since many carriers have a few partners that can only be booked by phone. Reservations can be reached at 1-800-252-7522 from 5a.m. to midnight, Pacific Time.

However you don’t need to rely entirely on the reservations agent if you’d like to explore on your own. The award space that an airline provides to one partner will generally be available to other partners. (Alaska Airlines still has the final say when it comes time to book the award, and you’ll pay the number of miles published on Alaska’s award chart, not the partner’s chart.

In this example, you could search on either the Qantas or British Airways website for Cathay Pacific award space and then call Alaska to book. You wouldn’t want to search on Cathay Pacific’s own website because you may see much more award space, which it makes available to its own members and not to partners.

intl awards 4

Successful award travelers break the process down, performing each part themselves. Sometimes the online search tool does a great job, but a little human creativity may uncover additional results. In addition, you’ll now be able to do research on some awards for partners like Cathay Pacific and LAN before you call an agent, expediting the process.

Just be flexible and the more advance the better. We just went to Hong Kong and then SE Asia on Cathay and returned via Emirates thru Dubai on business class. Both airlines were accomodating and wonderful.

Booking through London is very expensive.

I was waiting for a business class award seat to open up on a Cathay Pacific flight, so I was checking British Airways’ site daily. When one finally became available, I called Alaska, but I was told there was no availability in business class. I complained a bit to the agent about not having the ability to search online for Cathay Pacific reward seats. While we were talking, she refreshed her screen, and then her system was showing the seat in business class.

I don’t know if availability varies from partner to partner, but if an award flight is showing available one one airline’s site and not when you call Alaska, make sure the agent refreshes their screen!

Just wanted to note that another Alaska partner, Emirates, also flies to Bali. I flew them there from Seattle last year & they were great 🙂

How to book Alaska Airlines awards using KrisFlyer miles

Andrew

When you think about redeeming KrisFlyer miles for domestic flights in the USA, it’s most likely you’ll gravitate towards SIA’s sole US-based Star Alliance partner United Airlines, which offers an extensive network from seven primary hub cities all over the country.

One carrier that might not immediately come to mind as an alternative is SIA’s other US partner, Oneworld member Alaska Airlines.

Alaska has been a KrisFlyer earning and redemption partner since 2017, and offers a wide variety of domestic flights in the USA from primary hubs on the West Coast, including cities served by direct SIA flights like Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

As well as domestic connections, there are also flights to and from Canada and Mexico, so the airline can be a very useful option for extending your trip, especially when you consider that the KrisFlyer zone-based award chart for redeeming miles on Alaska Airlines flights has some nice ‘sweet spots’.

With a fleet of close to 300 aircraft, Alaska Airlines a large carrier that also racks up regular customer service awards (ones that are actually voted on by passengers ).

book award travel alaska airlines

There’s a problem though. Searching and booking KrisFlyer awards on Alaska Airlines is still an offline process, and Singapore Airlines agents really aren’t well versed in it.

The good news is – we found a method to hopefully smoothen the ordeal!

Redeeming KrisFlyer miles on Alaska Airlines can be really good value

You can travel all around the US West Coast and between the US West Coast and Canada on Alaska Airlines at a very competitive 8,500 KrisFlyer miles one-way in Economy Class, and after that the award rates don’t rise too steeply for longer trips either.

book award travel alaska airlines

  KrisFlyer Alaska Airlines Award Chart

For most of our readers, the pertinent awards worth looking at are to and from Zone 1, which includes Alaska hub cities that also offer direct SIA service to Singapore like Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle.

book award travel alaska airlines

For example, in Economy Class you can redeem:

  • Seattle to Los Angeles for 8,500 KrisFlyer miles (14,000 KrisFlyer miles on United)
  • Seattle to Denver for 8,500 KrisFlyer miles (14,000 KrisFlyer miles on United)
  • Seattle to Houston for 10,500 KrisFlyer miles (14,000 KrisFlyer miles on United)
  • Anchorage to Denver for 13,000 KrisFlyer miles (14,000 KrisFlyer miles on United)
  • San Francisco to New York for 13,500 KrisFlyer miles (14,000 KrisFlyer miles on United)
  • Los Angeles to Cancun for 13,500 KrisFlyer miles (19,500 KrisFlyer miles on United)
  • Los Angeles to Maui for 13,500 KrisFlyer miles (19,500 KrisFlyer miles on United)

Note that you can only book non-stop flights with Alaska Airlines using KrisFlyer miles. Return trips simply cost double the miles rate shown for the zone combination.

book award travel alaska airlines

Obviously you always need to check the cash fare of the flight you are interested in, to work out if it’s a good use of your miles (sometimes it isn’t).

Be particularly careful with Alaska’s flights to and from Mexico. These can be upwards of 5 hours and therefore seem like a great deal at 13,500 KrisFlyer miles – but fares are often very cheap since the US carriers have to compete with local incumbents on these routes.

How to search Alaska Airlines award space

In February 2021, Alaska Airlines changed its fare codes ahead of the carrier joining the Oneworld alliance the following month, to streamline with alliance protocols.

As such, partner award flights in First Class changed from ‘A’ to ‘E’ and in Economy Class changed from ‘W’ to ‘T’ .

With this knowledge to hand, it’s easy to check partner award availability on Alaska Airlines flights using a tool like ExpertFlyer – just look for space in those ‘E’ and ‘T’ buckets.

book award travel alaska airlines

You can also replicate this availability with an Alaska Airlines partner that does allow online search and booking, like British Airways Avios, American Airlines AAdvantage, or Cathay Pacific Asia Miles sites.

book award travel alaska airlines

Note that British Airways calls Alaska Airlines First Class “Business Class”.

Don’t search using Alaska Mileage Plan

Alaska Airlines provides identical award space to all its partner FFPs, but do note that doing an award search on the airline’s own website will not accurately reflect this, because Alaska offers more award space to its own members than to partners.

book award travel alaska airlines

In this example, as we saw above, Alaska is not offering any partner award space on the later AS877 flight on this date, so you won’t be able to use KrisFlyer miles to book it either.

Our use of KrisFlyer miles on Alaska Airlines

Despite never thinking we would use our miles on an Alaska Airlines flight (we did lock one in in 2021 but never used it) – we do need to fly from Seattle to Hawaii in August, and the only options to do so non-stop are with Alaska Airlines, Delta Air Lines and Hawaiian Airlines.

With no mileage currencies in hand to redeem on the latter two, our options are:

  • Redeem KrisFlyer miles, Avios, Asia Miles or Alaska Miles on Alaska Airlines; or
  • Pay cash (Alaska already offers the cheapest flight on this route)

Using KrisFlyer miles on Alaska Airlines is actually one of the cheapest ways to redeem miles from the US West Coast to and from Hawaii (who knew!).

We opted for AS811 , which gives us most of the day in Seattle before we need to head to the airport, and the good news is partner award space is available.

book award travel alaska airlines

Don’t underestimate how far Hawaii is from the mainland!

This 6 hour 15 minute flight is the same distance as flying from Singapore to Beijing, a route that costs 21,500 KrisFlyer miles one-way in Saver Economy, but thanks to the attractive Alaska award chart only costs 13,500 KrisFlyer miles .

On top of that, taxes on award tickets in the USA are rock bottom – it’s only a US$5.60 (~S$7.50) cash component per passenger on top of the miles used.

Here are the options for our itinerary:

  • 13,000 Avios + US$5.60
  • 13,500 KrisFlyer Miles + US$5.60
  • 15,000 Asia Miles + US$17.00
  • 20,000 Alaska Miles + US$5.60 (dynamic miles rate that can vary from 15,000 – 50,000 miles on this route)

This flight is available for US$299 (~S$398), also including the same perks as an award ticket, like complimentary seat selection.

That means the 13,500 KrisFlyer miles per passenger using KrisFlyer is saving us around US$293 (since the US$5.60 tax still needs to be paid), which is a saving of ~S$390.

That’s a value per mile of 2.89 Singapore cents, which is excellent for Economy Class. Even accounting for the 2,600 KrisFlyer miles we would earn when travelling on this flight under the paid US$299 booking, the value per mile is still north of 2.4 cents.

The value per mile using 13,000 Avios is marginally better of course, at 3 Singapore cents per mile, but we don’t have as many Avios as we do KrisFlyer miles, and we would prefer to preserve them for intra-Asia trips and Qatar Airways redemptions to Europe, so in this case using our much larger stash of KrisFlyer makes more sense.

Using 15,000 Asia Miles is another good option, but with higher taxes and fees payable the value per mile drops to 2.5 cents, because you’re using more miles and saving less cash.

book award travel alaska airlines

All of these options are a much better proposition than redeeming 20,000 Alaska Miles + US$5.60 , given that we and most of our readers have had to buy our Alaska Miles in one of the airline’s regular sales at a rate of ~2.4 Singapore cents or more (implied cost S$480!).

Most KrisFlyer agents don’t know how to book Alaska awards

The biggest frustration faced by many KrisFlyer members is that when you call or use the online chat function to book an Alaska Airlines award with KrisFlyer miles the answer is always the same – no availability .

I faced this exact scenario this week while trying to book, despite award space being available, and chatted to several different agents, none of whom were able to see any award space.

Things I was told by Singapore Airlines agents over many painful hours included:

  • Sorry, Alaska Airlines is not a KrisFlyer partner(!)
  • KrisFlyer does not get the same award space that other partners do on Alaska Airlines (not true – all partners get the same)
  • The space you are seeing on other sites is commercial space, not award space (no, it wasn’t)
  • E and T are cash fares on Alaska, not award seats (no, they are not)
  • The flight you are trying to book is a codeshare (no, it’s operated by AS)

Frustrating to say the least – I had almost resigned myself to giving up. Then, something magical happened.

The fourth agent I chatted to could see the ‘E’ and ‘T’ fare code availability, despite saying I couldn’t use that, but he then figured out how to make it work, and quoted me for the journey.

I pleaded with the guy to let me know what it was he did on the system at his end to make this happen, so I wouldn’t have to go through this again and could simply tell any subsequent agent what to input to get to the right answer, and he shared it with me.

The process that works

The process that seems to work is:

  • Search your desired Alaska Airlines flight for award space via ExpertFlyer, or on the British Airways or Asia Miles website.
  • Start a live chat with Kris the chatbot . It’s best to do this while logged on to your KrisFlyer account.
  • Click ‘Chat with a live agent’ (now available 24/7).
  • Once an agent connects, tell them you would like them to search and book an Alaska Airlines flight using your KrisFlyer miles. They will ask you to provide the details, then they will go off and search for a few minutes.

book award travel alaska airlines

  • Sometimes the agent will ask if you have tried an award search online via the singaporeair.com website – just let them know that it is not possible to search or book Alaska Airlines awards online.
  • The agent will almost always respond that there are no awards available on this flight.

book award travel alaska airlines

  • Ask the agent to check again, first by searching for regular cash fares on the flight, then by switching to redemption seats. This is what the agent shared with me and this always seems to work.

book award travel alaska airlines

  • If the agent does as you ask, they will now be able to see the space and ticket the award for you.

book award travel alaska airlines

  • You can go ahead and ticket the award with the live chat agent, but they will have to send you a payment link for the taxes and fees because they are not allowed to take your credit card details over the chat itself.
  • Alternatively, you can call KrisFlyer to book – but that does probably mean starting this process all over again by phone, which may lead to some frustration!

book award travel alaska airlines

So the moral of the story – you will always be told there is no availability at first, but stay calm, take a deep breath, and ask the agent to check regular commercial space, then switch to redemption .

If necessary – mention the T fare code (RBD – or Reservation Booking Designator).

I have no idea how this looks on the screen at their end, but it works – I’ve now tested it three times with no issues.

What about First Class?

Unfortunately award rates for redeeming Alaska Airlines First Class using KrisFlyer miles (those ‘E’ codes) are not particularly attractive, coming in at 50,500 miles one-way for a West Coast – Hawaii routing, for example.

In this case you might want to consider using Avios or Asia Miles for a better rate.

book award travel alaska airlines

This particular flight costs US$599 (~S$797), so the value per mile using KrisFlyer (50,500 miles) would be terrible at 1.58 cents.

Even using 38,750 Avios – the best option – is only netting you 2 cents per mile, which is not at all great for First / Business Class, and is less than the value we’re achieving in Economy.

Why can’t KrisFlyer bring Alaska awards online?

Singapore Airlines first started to roll out online search and booking for Star Alliance and partner awards back in late 2017.

Despite slow progress at the start, almost all Star Alliance and partner award space can now be searched and booked online using KrisFlyer miles via singaporeair.com or the mobile app, as shown in the following tables.

Star Alliance

Partner airlines.

Singapore Airlines has been working to progressively roll out all Star Alliance and partner awards online, but it’s now been five years and Alaska Airlines sadly remains off the list.

Given that Alaska Airlines awards for partners are easy to identify in the reservation system (E or T fare class availability), and other partner programmes seem to have no issue integrating the searching and booking of these awards into their own systems, it’s a bit puzzling that Singapore Airlines still has not done so.

Are they even still trying with this one?

Doing so would significantly simplify the process, and save the time of online or phone agents who must search and book these redemptions manually for members, but at least we have an interim solution.

book award travel alaska airlines

Alaska Airlines has an extensive domestic network from its US West Coast hubs, and quite a compelling KrisFlyer zone-based award chart when redeeming miles in Economy Class on many routes, giving you well over 2 cents per mile of value on selected flights.

Unfortunately it’s still not possible to search and book these awards online – and that’s a real pain.

Singapore Airlines chat and phone agents always give the same default response when you ask to redeem Alaska flights with available awards in my experience – no availability.

Thankfully I persevered this week when needing to lock in our own redemption, and finally chatted to an agent who made it work – convincing him to explain the ‘back-end’ process for me which now seems to work every time .

Clearly it would just be easier for all of us if these awards could simply be brought online like those for other partners, but this is hopefully a useful interim solution for everyone.

Since AS has joined OW, I wonder if there’s any news that this codeshare might end?

Anything is possible but that was two years ago so I’d imagine they would have cut ties by now if that were the case.

Excellent post Andrew, thanks to your perseverance we know know how to book AS award flight. It’s one thing to not have the ability to search and book partner award online but it’s downright inexcusable to have your booking agents not know how to properly search and book a partner award ticket. Do better KrisFlyer!

Dear Andrew, Why i cannot find the Star alliance award space through singaporeair.com? I tried many routes and many times but nothing shown there. But i can see a lot of spaces through united web. Is that possible if i search through united then contact SQ agent then tell them which star alliance award space i want to fly? Also can i use the miles shown in united web as the reference how many miles needed in krismiles? Thanks a lot for your answer

The website or app will initially show you only Singapore Airlines award space in the results.

You then need to click ‘Star Alliance’ at the top menu where it says ‘Show flights for’. Similarly you have to change to ‘Other partner airlines’ to see award space on non-Star Alliance partners. Hope it helps!

Hi Andrew, I am flying SIN-LAX, LAX-LAS, LAS-MCO, MCO-JFK in November. I have miles in Citibank. Can you advise how I may use these miles to get any award tickets? Would KF- Alaska redemption be the solution?

Also, I realize that I will be bringing large amounts of luggage with me from SIN and these domestic flights usually charge an arm and leg for luggage – do you have any hack for this dilemma?

You could redeem 8,500 KrisFlyer miles for LAX-LAS on Alaska Airlines, but there are no non-stop options for using KrisFlyer miles on LAS-MCO or MCO-JFK (but you could redeem 14,000 miles for MCO-EWR with United).

Assuming you want to fly Business Class for the long SIN-LAX portion then provided you can find a date with availability you’re looking at 107,000 KrisFlyer miles (Saver) or 128,500 KrisFlyer miles (Advantage) for a non-stop SQ flight or the SQ12 service via Tokyo.

Alternatively Asia Miles could be a good option to fly Cathay Pacific SIN-HKG-LAX in Business Class for 85,000 miles, or 117,700 miles in Business to Hong Kong and First Class on the HKG-LAX sector. There is award space showing for both options on selected dates in November.

As for luggage allowance this is a tricky one on domestic US legs – Alaska will charge at least US$30 for the first 50lb bag in Economy Class for example. United is similar, unless you’re Star Alliance Gold then you’ll get the first checked bag for free.

Thanks Andrew. I have already booked my SQ business tickets from SIN-LAX and JFK-SIN for 5 pax a year ago. US domestic flight is really a headache. The luggage surcharges are a killer when we travel as a family across the US over winter. I do have SQ KF gold – but i think any savings in 1st bag is off set by the higher flight cost of United vs the budget airlines… Sianz.

Do you know how to book Air Canada’s flight with krisflyer?

My first comment (despite being a regular fan of the site). This is immensely helpful and yes, I’ve had the same experience booking Alaska Airlines award flights too. All the different agents I called (3) said there is no award space regardless of how far ahead the dates are. It was insanely frustrating and I gave up. Ended up booking an Avianca flight (Star Alliance award redemption) instead. SQ really needs to improve their backend training else there really isn’t any point publishing non-Star Alliance award redemption partners.

Thanks for being a long-time reader and I’m happy this helped, though maybe a bit late for you.

Thanks for this detailed post. I have tried booking Alaska award flights without much luck despite confirming availability first through BA’s and Cathay’s award search, and suggesting to the rep each time to search cash fares before switching to redemption, and mentioning the E/T fare code. I chatted with 5 and spoke with 1 rep who all said there was no award space regardless of dates. Have you had any experience with using the form: https://www.singaporeair.com/saar5/pdf/ppsclub_krisflyer/forms/PartnerAL-ResRequest.pdf to book award miles, as mentioned here: https://www.singaporeair.com/en_UK/it/ppsclub-krisflyer/use-miles/redeem-miles/award-tickets-on-partner-airlines/ ? Does that work any better? Or do you have the name of a rep who’s understands the process and has been able to help you?

RE:925e2ce3e1 note – I tried the form and no better luck. I’ve booked my award flight with British Airways already just to get it saved. I try Singapore airlines method as described above every once in awhile to see if they can ever see the award space – 7 seats still showing available on BA. They never see the award space unfortunately. Probably going to just have to let those KF miles expire…

No luck for me either, 2 chats and 1 phone call and no one was able to find availability for the AS flight I saw with available award seats on BA and AA.

Did you know that Alaska Airlines miles are useful for much more than flights on Alaska Airlines?

Alaska Airlines has built a unique and valuable alliance with key airlines around the world to help you reach just about anywhere. You can find and book award seats on most partners directly on  alaskaair.com . Simply enter your route and travel dates and you’ll see if an award flight is available on its partner airlines, including American Airlines, Japan Airlines and Emirates.

Unfortunately, you can’t use the Alaska Airlines website to find award seats on every single partner — but it’s still possible to redeem your miles for award flights on these airlines, too. I’ll show you how to find award seats you can book using Alaska Airlines miles .

book award travel alaska airlines

Redeem Alaska Airlines miles for award flights on partner airlines

Alaska Airlines will enter the oneworld alliance by mid-2021. But they’ve already got a You can redeem Alaska Airlines miles for award flights on these partner airlines :

  • American Airlines
  • British Airways
  • Cathay Pacific
  • Fiji Airways
  • Hainan Airlines
  • Japan Airlines
  • LATAM Airlines
  • Ravn Alaska
  • Singapore Airlines

Partner award flights have  no fuel surcharges  (except for flights on British Airways). Just remember, the number of Alaska Airlines miles required for an award flight varies by route and airline partner. You can find the cost of an award flight by entering your departure and destination region here . Read our guide of the best ways to redeem Alaska Airlines miles for more information.

How to search for available seats on most Alaska Airlines partner award flights

Step 1. go to the alaska airlines website and enter flight details.

Visit alaskaair.com and enter your origin, destination, travel dates, and number of passengers. Be sure to check “ Use Miles” to search for award flights.

book award travel alaska airlines

I typically recommend searching for one-way award flights to make things simpler. And you don’t need to be logged into your Alaska Airlines account ( free to join !) to search for awards.

Step 2. View available partner flights

Alaska will show a list of available award flights for your itinerary and dates. Filter by airline and number of stops to narrow down your results. For example, on a sample search from Los Angeles to Dubai, the results show an Emirates flight with available award seats in coach, business class, and first class.

book award travel alaska airlines

Step 3. Select flights and book

Once you find the flight you want, select it and book as you normally would for any other Alaska Airlines award flight. If you prefer to book by phone, call Alaska Airlines at 800-252-7522. But keep in mind, if the award flight is bookable online, you’ll pay a $15 call center ticketing fee.

Find award seats on Cathay Pacific LATAM

You can’t see award seats on LATAM flights through the Alaska Airlines website. Instead, use the  British Airways website (sign-in required) . Then, call Alaska Airlines to book the flight. Here’s a guide to checking for award seats on Cathay Pacific and LATAM.

Step 1. Log into your British Airways Avios account

Log into your  British Airways account . It’s free to sign-up if you don’t already have an account.

Step 2. Search for award flights

Next, search flight routes operated by Cathay Pacific or LATAM to see if award seats are available.

For example, I searched for flights from Los Angeles to Hong Kong. And the results show plenty of Cathay Pacific flights with open award seats.

book award travel alaska airlines

I also found award seats on LATAM flights between Miami to Lima.

book award travel alaska airlines

The award flight cost using British Airways Avios points can be more or less than what you’ll pay booking with Alaska Airlines miles. It’s a good idea to check the Alaska Airlines award charts  to confirm the cost and compare.

Step 3. Call Alaska Airlines to book the flight

If the British Airways website shows there are available award seats on Cathay Pacific or LATAM, you can book them using Alaska Airlines miles. Just call Alaska Airlines at 800-252-7522 and provide them with the flight details you found from your search.

Because these seats can’t be booked online, you can ask them to waive the phone ticketing fee. You might have to pay anyway, but it never hurts to ask.

Bottom line

Use  alaskaair.com  to search and book award seats on most of  Alaska Airline’s partner airlines . This includes flights on Emirates, Icelandair, Japan Airlines and many others. For the time being, you won’t find available award seats on Cathay Pacific or LATAM using the Alaska Airlines website. Instead, search on the website of another oneworld airline, such as  British Airways . When you spot available seats, call Alaska Airlines at 800-252-7522 to redeem miles for your flight. Have your flight number, dates, times, etc. ready to feed the phone agent.

Before you search for award flights, check the  Alaska Airlines award charts  to confirm the cost.

If you’re looking to earn Alaska Airlines miles , you can sign-up for the  Bank of America Alaska Airlines  card or transfer transfer Marriott points to your Alaska Airlines account.

One of the most important methods to increase the potential value of your miles is to learn about all of the ways you can use them. Did you know you can use American Airlines AAdvantage ® miles to book flights with 20 different partner airlines?

If you limit yourself to American-operated flights, you can visit roughly 350 destinations in about 60 countries. But if you include partner airlines, your choices balloon to more than 900 destinations in approximately 170 countries and territories.

Here's a look at the airlines you can book with American Airlines miles, including some of the best ways to redeem American Airlines miles .

American Airlines Partners

American Airlines' partner airline page lists 24 airlines: 13 Oneworld members and 11 additional partners. However, you can't redeem AAdvantage miles for flights on some AAdvantage partner airlines, including IndiGo and JetSMART. And the JetBlue and American Airlines partnership ended , though it's still listed on the partner page.

Here are the Oneworld airlines you can book with AAdvantage miles:

  • American Airlines

Alaska Airlines

British airways, cathay pacific, japan airlines, malaysia airlines, qatar airways, royal air maroc, royal jordanian airlines, srilankan airlines.

Graphic showing all Oneworld airlines superimposed on top of a world map

And here are the other American Airlines partners that you can book with AAdvantage miles:

Air Tahiti Nui

  • China Southern Airlines (call AAdvantage to book)

Etihad Airways

Fiji airways, gol airlines, hawaiian airlines.

As you can see, the subset of airlines you can book with AAdvantage miles includes airlines throughout the world.

Earning American Airlines Miles

You may think it is difficult to earn American Airlines miles since the AAdvantage program isn't a transfer partner of any major bank points program. But here's a look at the programs that do transfer to American AAdvantage.

Transferring points or miles to American AAdvantage will generally provide poor value. The primary exception is Bilt Rewards points and, for some high-value redemptions, Marriott Bonvoy points.

You can also buy American Airlines miles . And you can earn American Airlines miles through Bask Bank , AAdvantage Dining , and SimplyMiles .

You can also add one or more co-branded American Airlines credit cards to your wallet to earn AAdvantage miles on your spending. Here's a look at a few of our favorite cards:

Award Pricing for American Airlines Flights

You can redeem miles for American Airlines flights . For one-way awards solely operated by American Airlines and originating in North America, you can see estimated starting rates on the following award chart :

American Airlines AAdvantage award chart

But, you'll sometimes find lower rates. And you'll often find much higher rates. In short, the award chart for flights American Airlines operates isn't all that useful in practice since it only shows estimated starting values.

For shorter flights, you may want to consider booking your American Airlines flight with British Airways Avios . Oftentimes, the points costs for these flights are lower through the Avios program than through the AAdvantage program.

American Airlines Partner Award Charts

American AAdvantage still maintains partner award charts, organized by region of origin, for itineraries that involve Oneworld or partner airlines. And this is where you can find excellent value.

Unlike AAdvantage's award chart for American-operated flights, rates for awards involving partner airlines do not vary. One flat redemption cost applies, subject to award availability of course.

Here's a look at the partner award chart for one-way itineraries that originate in the contiguous 48 U.S. states or Canada (check the partner award chart page to see charts for travel originating in other regions).

American Airlines AAdvantage Oneworld and partner award chart

Many additional qualifiers follow this chart on American's webpage, like routing rules and airline stipulations. Before planning travel to any of these regions on partner airlines, make sure to read these conditions carefully.

Oneworld Partner Flights

You can redeem American Airlines miles for itineraries that include flights operated by Oneworld airlines and other AAdvantage partners.

As long as your itinerary includes at least one segment operated by an airline that's not American Airlines, you'll pay set award rates defined by the AAdvantage partner award chart . Here's a look at your options.

Alaska Airlines , which is based on the U.S. West Coast and serves more than 120 destinations in North and Central America, joined the Oneworld alliance in 2021 .

You can redeem American Airlines miles for award travel on Alaska Airlines, including itineraries with flights operated by other Oneworld and partner airlines. Plus, travelers with American Airlines elite status can also enjoy select elite perks when flying on Alaska Airlines.

Award rates follow the AAdvantage partner award chart . So, you'll need to redeem 12,500 miles for a one-way economy award within the contiguous 48 U.S. states or Canada that includes flights operated by Alaska Airlines.

British Airways serves nearly 250 destinations in 90 countries from its hub in London. You can redeem American miles for travel on British Airways, including itineraries with some segments operated by other Oneworld and partner airlines.

When you go to redeem American miles for an award flight between the U.S. and Europe , chances are good that you'll see some results with at least one segment operated by British Airways.

The positive of awards with at least one segment operated by British Airways is that these awards will price based on the AAdvantage partner award chart , meaning you'll need to redeem the following miles for a one-way itinerary between the contiguous 48 U.S. states and Europe:

  • Economy : 30,000 miles (22,500 miles for travel on off-peak dates)
  • Premium economy : 40,000 miles
  • Business : 57,500 miles
  • First : 85,000 miles

You can also redeem 10,000 miles for a one-way economy award (or 15,000 miles for a one-way business/first class award) within the United Kingdom.

However, the negative of awards with some or all segments operated by British Airways is high taxes and fees. The taxes and fees tend to be worse when you have longer segments operated by British Airways.

Taxes and fees on premium cabin award tickets can exceed $600 each way. If your itinerary calls for transatlantic travel on British Airways, consider booking with Asia Miles instead of AAdvantage miles to save on exorbitant surcharges.

Cathay Pacific serves more than 90 destinations in 35 countries from its hub in Hong Kong. You can redeem American miles for award travel on Cathay Pacific, including itineraries with segments operated by other Oneworld and partner airlines.

Cathay Pacific serves several destinations within the United States and offers a logical and comfortable way to jet around Asia. From select cities in the United States, you can redeem AAdvantage miles and reach many popular destinations within Asia with a single connection.

The Hong Kong-based carrier operates from what American AAdvantage defines as “Asia Region 2.” This means that the following AAdvantage partner award chart applies for one-way award flights operated by Cathay Pacific from Hong Kong and most other destinations in Asia (the primary exceptions are Japan and Korea, which are in “Asia Region 1”):

American Airlines AAdvantage Oneworld and partner award chart for Asia Region 2

Finnish flag carrier Finnair only flies to a few cities in the United States, but it serves more than 150 destinations in 50 countries from its hub in Helsinki.

Below is the applicable AAdvantage partner award chart for one-way travel on Finnair, including itineraries with other Oneworld and partner airlines, from Europe.

American Airlines AAdvantage Oneworld and partner award chart for Europe

You can also fly within Finland for just 10,000 miles one-way in economy. So while Finnair might not offer quite as many destinations worldwide as other partners like British Airways, it makes exploring Scandinavia possible with American Airlines miles.

Based in Madrid, Iberia operates routes to almost 120 destinations in 45 countries. Iberia serves some U.S. airports, so it may let you avoid the high taxes and fees that you'd incur flying British Airways transatlantic.

You can redeem American miles for award travel on Iberia (including flights marketed by Iberia but operated by Iberia Express), other Oneworld airlines, and partner airlines. These award redemptions follow the standard AAdvantage partner award chart , which also lets you fly one-way within Spain for just 10,000 miles in economy or 15,000 in business/first class.

But, for direct flights between North America and Spain, consider using Iberia Avios instead of American Airlines miles. Iberia charges as few as 17,000 Avios in economy or 34,000 Avios in business for a one-way flight between the East Coast and Spain.

Want to visit Asia and fly comfortably, regardless of class of cabin? Japan Airlines leads the way, serving more than 80 destinations in 20 countries from its hubs in Japan.

You can redeem American miles for award travel on Japan Airlines, including awards involving other Oneworld and partner airlines. Japan belongs to “Asia Region 1” on the AAdvantage partner award chart , so redemptions start at 35,000 miles in economy and go up to 80,000 miles for first-class awards for travel between the contiguous 48 U.S. states and Japan.

Travelers can connect in Japan to anywhere in “Asia Region 2” for 2,500 more miles in economy, 10,000 more miles in business class, or 30,000 more miles in first class. Interestingly, no additional miles are required to connect to “Asia Region 2” if you are booking a premium economy award from the contiguous 48 U.S. states.

You can also redeem American miles to fly within Japan for just 7,500 miles one-way in economy and 15,000 miles one-way in business/first.

One final thing to keep in mind with Japan Airlines: the airline serves some smaller airports in the United States. When piecing together award travel plans, consider checking for award space to smaller airports such as San Diego.

Malaysia Airlines serves more than 50 destinations across Asia, Europe, the Pacific, and the Middle East.

Despite not offering any routes to North America, the Kuala Lumpur-based airline can still be useful for award travelers who want to book flights between the destinations it serves. You can redeem American miles for awards on Malaysia Airlines, including itineraries involving other Oneworld and partner airlines.

Similar to Cathay Pacific's Hong Kong hub, Malaysia Airlines' Kuala Lumpur hub is in “Asia Region 2” for the AAdvantage partner award chart .

Qantas serves more than 80 destinations in 20 countries from its hubs in Australia. You can redeem American miles for travel on Qantas, including itineraries with other Oneworld and partner airlines.

Australia is in the “South Pacific” region on the AAdvantage partner award chart . Here's a look at the amount of American Airlines miles you'll need to redeem for a one-way award between the contiguous 48 U.S. states and the South Pacific region (including Australia):

  • Economy : 40,000 miles
  • Premium economy : 65,000 miles
  • Business/First : 80,000 miles
  • First : 110,000 miles

You can also redeem American miles for one-way awards within Australia at a rate of 10,000 miles in economy, 15,000 miles in premium economy, and 20,000 miles in business/first. And you can fly one-way between Australia and New Zealand for 15,000 miles in economy, 20,000 miles in premium economy, and 25,000 miles in business/first.

My favorite way to redeem American Airlines miles is for travel in business class on Qatar Airways . Qatar Airways serves about 140 destinations across six continents from its hub in Doha, and you can include flights operated by other Oneworld and partner airlines when redeeming American miles for Qatar-operated flights.

For 70,000 American miles each way, the AAdvantage partner award chart lets you travel between the contiguous 48 U.S. states and the Middle East or Indian Subcontinent in Qatar's incredible Qsuite product. For an extra 5,000 miles, you can reach many destinations within the African continent as well, all with just one stop in Doha.

Before you book, consider checking whether your flight(s) will have Qsuite seats . If you don't have the miles or award availability to travel in business class, Qatar's economy class provides a perfectly pleasant experience as well.

Royal Air Maroc serves more than 100 destinations from its hub in Casablanca. You can redeem American miles for travel on Royal Air Maroc , including itineraries involving other Oneworld and partner airlines.

The AAdvantage partner award chart region definitions put Morocco in the “Europe” region . You'll need to redeem American miles as follows to fly between the contiguous 48 U.S. states and the AAdvantage “Europe” region:

You'll need to redeem significantly more miles if you want to connect through Casablanca to other destinations in the Middle East, Africa, or the Indian Subcontinent. However, you can redeem just 5,000 American miles in economy and 10,000 miles in business/first to fly within Morocco.

Royal Jordanian Airlines serves nearly 45 destinations in 30 countries from its hub in Amman.

Like Qatar Airways, Royal Jordanian Airlines offers a connection point in the Middle East for Oneworld travelers. But unlike Qatar Airways, Royal Jordanian does not offer enclosed suites in business class and it serves fewer U.S. cities.

Like Qatar Airways' Doha hub, Royal Jordanian Airlines' Amman hub lies in the AAdvantage partner award chart “Middle East” region. Based on the award chart, you can fly one-way transatlantic between the contiguous 48 U.S. states and the Middle East for 40,000 AAdvantage miles in economy, 62,500 miles in premium economy, 70,000 miles in business/first, and 115,000 miles in first class.

You can also redeem American Airlines miles to fly within Jordan for 7,500 miles one-way in economy and 10,000 miles one-way in business/first.

SriLankan Airlines doesn't serve any U.S. airports. However, the carrier serves many destinations in the Indian Subcontinent and some destinations in Europe, Asia, Australia, and the Middle East from its hub in Colombo.

You can redeem American Airlines miles for award travel that includes segments operated by SriLankan Airlines, other Oneworld airlines, and partner airlines. So, you could fly another Oneworld or partner airline and connect to one or more SriLankan Airlines flights if you live in an area not served directly by SriLankan.

Here's a look at the AAdvantage partner award chart for one-way itineraries that originate in the “Indian Subcontinent” region.

American Airlines AAdvantage Oneworld and partner award chart for the Indian subcontinent

Flights on Non-Alliance Partners

As mentioned earlier, American AAdvantage has some partners that aren't part of the Oneworld alliance. You can't currently redeem American miles for flights on two partners (IndiGo and JetSMART), so we won't discuss these partners further.

But, you can redeem American miles for itineraries that include at least one AAdvantage partner flight at the rates defined by the AAdvantage partner award chart . Here's what you need to know.

With just four total planes in its fleet, Air Tahiti Nui serves five destinations from its hub in Papeete, French Polynesia: Auckland, Los Angeles, Paris (via Los Angeles), Seattle, and Tokyo.

You can redeem American miles for one-way flights to or from the South Pacific (which includes French Polynesia, Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, and many other destinations) based on the following AAdvantage partner award chart :

American Airlines AAdvantage Oneworld and partner award chart for the South Pacific region

A couple of items in this chart stand out. First, it costs just 5,000 miles extra to fly in business class to Paris compared to Los Angeles. Continuing to Europe from California more than doubles the length of the journey, yet there's a very minor mileage cost.

Also, travel within the South Pacific in economy class costs just 15,000 miles. That means travelers can fly from Papeete to New Zealand, Australia, and many other destinations within the South Pacific for just 15,000 miles one-way in economy.

The first time I saw a Cape Air plane, I thought it was a private plane. But Cape Air is one of the largest independent regional airlines in the U.S.

Based on the AAdvantage partner page for Cape Air , you can only redeem AAdvantage miles for flights on the eight routes shown in the map below.

AAdvantage miles: Cape Air

However, Cape Air doesn't currently operate many of these routes. You can still redeem 12,500 American Airlines miles for the short economy flight between Chicago and Manistee, Michigan, though.

Redeeming American miles for Cape Air

But, these short flights are often bookable for under $100. So, consider whether booking a paid rate will be better before you redeem American miles for your Cape Air flight.

China Southern Airlines

China Southern Airlines is the largest airline in China. It serves 224 destinations in 40 countries from its hubs in Guangzhou and Beijing.

You can redeem American miles for travel on China Southern Airlines and you can include Oneworld and other partner airlines on your itineraries. However, you must call AAdvantage Reservations to book awards with one or more segments operated by China Southern Airlines.

Similar to Cathay Pacific's Hong Kong hub and Malaysia Airlines' Kuala Lumpur hub, the two China Southern Airlines hubs in China are located in “Asia Region 2” for the AAdvantage partner award chart .

Etihad Airways serves more than 70 destinations across Asia, Australia, Europe, the Middle East, and North America.

Abu Dhabi lies in the “Middle East” region on the AAdvantage partner award chart, but many travelers use Abu Dhabi as a connecting point. Similar to Qatar Airways hub in Doha, Etihad Airways' hub in the Middle East (Abu Dhabi) offers travelers an option to reach faraway destinations with minimal connections.

One aspirational mileage redemption involves flying in Etihad's A380 first-class cabin , which the airline dubs the “Apartment.” You can redeem American Airlines miles for one of the few opportunities to shower in the sky. We've even seen wide-open Etihad Apartments award availability appear several times within the last year, so keep an eye out for future posts if this redemption is on your bucket list.

Flying from its Nadi hub, Fiji Airways offers flights to and from major global cities as well as a variety of Pacific Island countries.

Similar to Air Tahiti Nui's Papeete hub, Fiji Airways' Nadi hub is located in the “South Pacific” region on the AAdvantage partner award chart .

But, since Fiji Airways operates many flights within Fiji and the South Pacific, it can be a great way to explore the region. You can fly one-way within Fiji for just 5,000 American miles in economy or 10,000 miles in business/first. And you can fly within the South Pacific region (including to Australia or New Zealand) for just 15,000 miles in economy, 25,000 miles in premium economy, or 30,000 miles in business/first.

LATAM's exit from the Oneworld alliance left American Airlines' reach throughout South America severely limited. Luckily, GOL Airlines helps fill that void.

The low-cost Brazil-based airline serves 64 domestic destinations and 12 international destinations in eight countries. GOL Airlines operates flights between Brazil and Florida, serving both Miami and Orlando.

Most of Brazil is in “South America Region 2” on the AAdvantage partner award chart , but Manaus is in “South America Region 1.” Here's a look at the award chart for one-way itineraries that originate in “South America Region 2.”

American Airlines AAdvantage Oneworld and partner award chart for the South America 2 region

Plus, one-way award flights wholly within Brazil cost 7,500 miles in economy and 17,500 miles in business/first. It is common for economy flights within Brazil to cost under $50 each way, though. So be sure to check paid rates before redeeming miles.

Hawaiian Airlines operates many flights between the continental U.S. and Hawaii, but you can't redeem American Airlines miles for these flights. This being said, you can redeem American miles for other flights Hawaiian Airlines operates, including:

  • Intra-Hawaii
  • Hawaii to/from Japan and South Korea
  • Hawaii to/from Tahiti, New Zealand and Australia

Below is the American Airlines partner award chart for flights originating in Hawaii:

American Airlines AAdvantage Oneworld and partner award chart for the Hawaii region

As with most other AAdvantage awards, you can usually include flights operated by Hawaiian Airlines on award itineraries with Oneworld airlines and other partners. However, any flight within Hawaii requires a separate award ticket and is only valid on Hawaiian Airlines.

Final Thoughts

American Airlines miles can take you to most places you might want to fly. Best of all, you can make most AAdvantage award bookings — including those that involve one or more segments operated by partner airlines — online without ever needing to speak to an agent.

If you want to travel on an airline not available online, you'll need to contact American Airlines Reservations. If the award can't be booked online, ask the agent to waive any booking fees that might otherwise apply.

Hi Mark, we are no longer able to offer AA miles for commenting. This ended in December 2021.

That’s too bad. Didn’t realize the “5 miles” went away. My account is about to lose all of its miles.

I hope that at some point the AAdvantage miles program returns to Argentina. Today in my country none of the big banks have the program.

Flying a domestic route onboard these AA 777-787 airplanes is always a privilegie: comfortable and safe. No chances for any other single aisle aircraft. Thanks for this great article, an excellent info source for who can accommodate in your trip plan a much better travel experience.

Muy util para encontrar la informacion. AAdvantage ha caido en desgracia en ARG desde que se fueron del Santander. Gracias!

I love the diversity of partners and the places they serve… Air Tahiti Nui!! The alliance made our honeymoon much more affordable!! Thanks for sharing.

' data-src=

I am amazed that people are deceived into thinking one can use Aadvantage web site to book award flights on partners……that is impossible. Call AA is even impossible to book awards on partners as the gold and platinum desk folks are not even aware of partners destinations…….I think this is all deliberate to prevent people booking award flights.

Yeah, some awards are still bookable online. But I’ve noticed the same: AA is clearly trying to make it as difficult as possible to use AA miles on partners.

What are the ways to prevent my AA mails to expire.

My AA miles were supposed to expire on April 2022, but now the expiration moved to oct1, 2022. Why is that?

That new date is likely 24mo from your last AA activity. They changed the expiration from 18 months to 24 months. Was your last activity in your AA account in September or October of 2020?

' data-src=

The program is quite good, with plenty of destinations and airlines. I lost the possibility to earn miles through my credit card expenses in Argentina after Citibank left the business in Argentina. Is there any other bank or credit card program in Argentina linked to AAdvantage? Thanks.

Eduardo – there’s no link for Argentina on this page, unfortunately – https://www.aa.com/i18n/aadvantage-program/miles/partners/credit-card/international-credit-and-debit-cards.jsp

' data-src=

Annoying that AW can’t monitor my miles, which I just looked at and saw they are expiring in 2 months. Hoping this comment will buy me a few points to keep them alive longer while I try to find a partner award ticket on AS that is actually valid. I checked over a dozen dates and routes and they are really stingy with allowing me to use those miles.

' data-src=

Earning AA miles via commenting on the blog are no longer available.

' data-src=

Did American Airlines nd its prtnership with AwardWallet or vice versa?

I was shocked to not see my balance in my account today. I hope none of my miles expired. Very unsatisfied.

We were forced to do this by American Airlines. They would not even allow us to publicly state why we are doing it.

' data-src=

Interesting information about partnerts airlines.

' data-src=

Que paso con Aadvantage en la Wallet?. Desaparecio?

Unfortunately, American Airlines has forced us to stop tracking American Airlines accounts on AwardWallet. Neither earning miles via commenting on the blog feature works now. We are very sorry about this and were hoping it would not come to this until the last minute. Due to legal reasons, we are not allowed to disclose further details.

' data-src=

It is wonderful that AA has so many airline partners around the world. thanks

' data-src=

It is so sad that we can no longer track our points in Award Wallet

We agree! Make sure to sign the petition. We are almost to 5k signatures! https://www.change.org/p/american-airlines-let-awardwallet-track-our-aa-miles-and-travel-itineraries

' data-src=

I have tried to book on alaska or jetblue flights using the aa web site using AA miles. NO other airline other than AA shows up no matter the itinerary ever. Is there a trick to getting ANY other partner airline to show up? I have checked the all airlines box when booking.

Unfortunately, it may be a lack of award availability on partners :/

' data-src=

' data-src=

Comprehensive as always. Can’t wait to get back flying properly again after all this

' data-src=

Totally understand your position. This whole mess definitely makes me less inclined to build-up AA miles in future though, and give my business to the other airlines instead.

Are you planning to do a blog post about what’s happened with AA’s removal from your site?

I’m particularly interested to understand why it’s not possible to do something like you do with Delta and United. I’m guessing they have threatened you pretty seriously, but it would be good to hear the inside story of what has gone on.

American Airlines would not even allow us to publicly state why we are doing it. The bottom line is AA is a huge company relative to AwardWallet, we just can’t afford to fight a lawsuit against them. We wish we could tell you the whole backstory but we can’t at this time.

' data-src=

I used to use my AA miles in LATAM for flying in South America , but since last year i have no choice. It was a pitty that LATAM left ONE WORLD alliance.

' data-src=

American Airlines is the best carrier in the sky. I have more than a million miles across the major airlines, and I always enjoy my American trips the most.

' data-src=

Lamentablemente los Argentinos no les interesamos y no les somos recitales, porque somos un país devaluado.

' data-src=

Looking forward shortly to Finnair SYD-HKG-HEL-LHR. First sector codeshare on Cathay Pacific, fantastic fares on offer and Oneworld points credited. What’s not to like?

' data-src=

American Airlines is the best!!!! Always I have a best atention, great space in the cabin, wonderfull meats!!!

' data-src=

' data-src=

I’m hoping to be able to resume travelling again soon. Hopefully, this comment section continues to be a way to keep our account active so as not to lose our accumulated points.

' data-src=

Why AAdvantage does not have an online link to GOL Airlines?

' data-src=

AAdvantage offers a service of wide coverage very useful for residents in South America with a very simple method to book flights. I use OneWorld member airlines to add miles for more than 15 years. I recommend non-members to enroll in the program and start getting the benefits and complement it with AwardWallet services and this blog

' data-src=

I believe AA to be the best in the world. It is a pity that Banco Santander in Argentina is no longer part of the AAdvantage program. Now it is a little bit hard for us to get miles. Do you know any other way of earning AA miles in Argentina? Thanks

' data-src=

Thanks a lot for this extensive and very comprehensive summary for AAdvantage Miles users.

Looking forward for getting an update on the latest Program Cahnges announced this week for 2022

' data-src=

Grateful for the insight of this blog!

' data-src=

Thank you for your comprehensive Blog! I appreciate having so much at my fingertips. 🙂

' data-src=

' data-src=

Wowzers! Thank you Award Wallet for this tip!!! 10/10 blog post!!!!!

' data-src=

Excellent information shared here. Living outside of US and Europe sometimes makes it very difficult and expensive to use airlines miles.

' data-src=

The Award Wallet System is very useful to find travel information. I will be using my AAdvantage miles this year. The blog gives a lot of excellent travel tips.

AA pt are very devalued !!

' data-src=

American airlines should have a pt expiry period of a min.of 24 months.

' data-src=

' data-src=

The AwardWallet system is awesome! Thank you for the useful information. I will be using my Advantage miles in British Airways this year, seems like a smooth process!

' data-src=

' data-src=

I guess I’m not sure how this works to get a ticket on a partner airline. Do you go the partner airline or do you go thru American? For example, when I try LAX to Lisbon, all I get are BA and AA. How do I get Iberia airline?

' data-src=

You always call the entity whose miles you want to use. If you want to redeem AA miles, you need to book through AAdvantage. Iberia doesn’t always show up in the online search, so a phone call may be necessary.

' data-src=

Hi! I have been attempting to get Goal airline tickets with my American Airlines rewards miles, but don’t seem to be able to do it. Any idea how to go about that process? Thanks in advance!

' data-src=

Aadvantage is the best mileage program by far…

' data-src=

Thanks for sharing! I´d been looking foward to use my AAdvantage miles and this information is really helpful

' data-src=

Best rewards AAdvantage!!

' data-src=

Thanks for sharing . All the information in one page . Very convenient . Save a lot of time for searching this in the web . Great Post . Thanks

' data-src=

Great post. I tihink American Airlines’ AAdvantage si a very complete Miles programa with a lot of airlines partners.

' data-src=

I think the AwardWallet system is great. I’ve already lost several miles due to lack of control over my accounts. Now I don’t miss it anymore… The blog also gives a lot of excellent tips!

' data-src=

I never seem to find supersver business class from US to Europe. Anyone have any hints?

Why does it cost so much when I try to book flights on British using miles?

Fuel surcharges. This might help: https://awardwallet.com/blog/avoid-paying-high-fuel-surcharges-booking-flights-avios/ And also, check out the section on “Out-of-Pocket Costs” from this post: https://awardwallet.com/blog/how-many-airline-miles-for-a-free-flight/

it would be good if more Airlines are added to those miles award program

' data-src=

It is a great program, looking forward to when they eliminate the miles expiration dates, as the main competitors have already done.

' data-src=

It’s great to be able to use American Airlines AAdvantage miles on partner airlines as well. Having a variety of products from different companies and being able to enjoy exotic destinations is a unique opportunity. All this, together with the improvement in the online reservation system, makes American more much more attractive from the customer’s point of view.

' data-src=

Excelente, muy buen informe con las actualizaciones de la alianzas. Cada vez es más simple lograr los cambios de millas dentro de la aerolínea y con las socias también Gracias

' data-src=

Has something changed with AAdvantage miles and the partner airlines within last few years? Previously I was unable to upgrade myself to Finnair’s Business class with AAdvantage miles, but I was able to use my miles for a Helsinki-New York-Helsinki flights. I think I also tried to use my Miles with JAL, but they weren’t accepted either. I do understand that Finnair/BA/JAL etc and AA miles aren’t 1:1 comparable with each other, but not being able to use them at all while living here in Europe just seemed unfair. Perhaps this has changed recently and I can start colleting my miles once again after this pandemic is finally over.

You should be able to book Finnair award flights with AAdvantage miles, although Finnair is very stingy with award space. However, upgrades are a whole different story. AAdvantage currently only allows mileage upgrades on AA, British, and Iberia flights: “Use your AAdvantage® miles to upgrade on American Airlines, British Airways and Iberia flights” https://www.aa.com/i18n/aadvantage-program/miles/redeem/award-travel/upgrade-with-miles-on-partner-airlines.jsp

' data-src=

My wife and i have been flying 2 times a year for 20 years on American to foreign and domestic cities and have always used award miles! That is a wonderful benefit of using credit cards to get award miles and thus great vacations. We have been to Europe 6 times during that time! I highly recommend the hobby of collecting miles. Now that we are retired and don’t have separate businesses and American cards are limiting how often one can earn miles, it is not so easy to do. However this site tells you the very best way to collect the most that can be gotten. Thank you Award Wallet!

' data-src=

This is helpful! i’ll have to bookmark this article to reference the next time i book travel!

' data-src=

Great web. Very usefull. Do you know if there is a place where you can exchange miles between AA.com anda LAtam?

Unfortunately not. Points.com has some limited options for transferring miles between airlines, but AA and LATAM aren’t participating airlines.

' data-src=

This is so helpful – I had no idea! We’ll have to bookmark this article to reference the next time we book our vacation!

' data-src=

Thank you for such useful info. I live outside the US and believed AA was the only airline I could use my AA miles

' data-src=

American sends emails indicating we can register for shortcuts to keeping elite status, but there is no way to sign up for the promos. Very disappointing.

' data-src=

Gracias

' data-src=

I am so glad I discovered AwardWallet. It has opened my eyes to information that is not readily available and will be a great resource for my business travels moving forward!

' data-src=

The list of Partner airlines that are valid to American Airlines millage program is very interesting as it covers Asia, America, Europe and Oceanía, so practically the whole world is covered with their miles Fantastic to organise a trip when the pandemic was over Thanks American Airlines!!!

' data-src=

This is a useful abiltiy and guide, particularly for people who might be based outside the US and therefore have less opportunity to fly on AA than a local carrier.

' data-src=

Alaska air is the way to go. Hawaiian isn’t so bad either.

' data-src=

It’s great to learn about the partners that AAdvantage miles can be redeemed with. In the past, (pre-pandemic) I was able to use mine to book a roundtrip domestic flight with GOL Airlines when I traveled to Brazil. Here’s hoping for safer travels for everyone in the future!

' data-src=

I agree that the best option to use the miles is Qatar airways in their incredible qsuites. And taxes are usually quite low

' data-src=

From Buenos Aires to Madrid with Iberia, 100k miles + $260… not worth it. Thanks for the information!

' data-src=

Good info, will make it easier to use the miles in a beneficial way. Thanks.

' data-src=

It’s a shame Latam has exited OneWord.

It was a good way to use AAdvantage miles within South America

' data-src=

Interesting that AA still considers all of Russia to be Europa (in the case of S7). Some value to traveling to the far east for sure.

' data-src=

I have loved CX redemptions in the past with AA miles. Even MAS can have a sweet spot sometimes – and that satellite golden lounge at KUL is glorious. Online searchability is helpful. Thanks for the updates, Award Wallet!

' data-src=

I wish Chase would add AA to their list of partners.

I recently started on AwardWallet to track my various programs (and just added some new ones). Took a while to locate all my programs to get them added but now they are all in one place with easy access… Thanks AW.

' data-src=

Awesome that Alaska is part of One World. More choices for domestic flights!

' data-src=

Good to know, always looking for ways to extend point expiration

' data-src=

There are some great partner options for using AAdvantage miles – just avoid British Airways to/from Europe – those surcharges on BA are often about as much as buying a ticket outright on another airline…..use those BA miles for domestic AA flights to avoid the surcharges.

' data-src=

What is a good credit card to get to earn AA miles? I have the AAviator Business Mastercard.

That’s a great topic for an entire post! Since you have a business, the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® Mastercard® is great for a large sign-up bonus (currently 65k) and 2X earnings on a bunch of categories: https://awardwallet.com/blog/citibusiness-aadvantage-card-review/ Or, since Citi points transfer to AA through November, you can get the Citi Premier Card – which currently has an 80k bonus plus 3x earnings in a bunch of categories: https://awardwallet.com/blog/citi-premier-card-review/

' data-src=

' data-src=

american has gotten me from point a to point b safely every time i have flown their airline!

' data-src=

Even more important – this post shows how you can earn a few miles and keep your miles active AAdvantage is great for Qantas redemptions, and they return the miles and taxes paid almost instantly – Qantas wont do this and charges more miles and taxes on its own metal through Qantas Frequent Flyer – very important now here in Australia with all our lockdowns – ive had to cancel a couple of AAdvatage Awards on Qantas metal – its is imho much better to redeem AAdvantage points for Qantas flights than QFF points

' data-src=

Qantas should take note. 🙂

' data-src=

Hoping that American will follow Delta’s lead and extend elite status another year. Just as we get ready to be back in the air, the Delta variant raises its head.

' data-src=

' data-src=

Very grateful for AwardWallet’s tracking program letting me know my AA miles were getting ready to expire and giving me an easy way to keep them up to date!

' data-src=

Que lastima que han dejado de operar con latam, deberían asociar aerolínea para sudamerica

' data-src=

Do not forget that a good way to extend extend the validity of your AAdvantage balance if not have been flying for a while, due to the corona virus or for other reasons, is to post a message on the award wallet blog. It is truly a great way to keep AAdvantage miles from expiring.

' data-src=

Isn’t the expiration date has been pushed all the way to 2024 by AA due to the health crisis?

' data-src=

I’m still amazed that this is a thing. I wish more places would do stuff like this.

' data-src=

This article was helpful and helped me understand the different airlines that are associated with American Airlines. I will bookmark this page and keep it for an easy reference. It also is helpful to keep AAdvantage miles current, especially with the pandemic.

' data-src=

This is a great way to keep the American Airlines miles from expiring. Thanks for starting this partnership!

It has been impossible to contact American Advantange, so thank you so much for this!

' data-src=

' data-src=

I’ve found that the best routed flights are generally not offered on international travel when paying with award points. Instead I’ve found much better flights that are deep discounted for cash.

' data-src=

This was helpful information, thanks! It is really a shame that AA haven’t extended the period in which miles don’t expire – there are still no way to travel overseas.

' data-src=

I’m happy I came across AwardWallet. Since we hardly travel these days, our hard earned loyalty points and miles are at risk of evaporating into thin air unless we stay on the ball. I was about to start a spreadsheet and manage points and deadlines manually, but then read about AwardWallet! Great work guys!

' data-src=

The review of the partner choices and improvements in redemption mechanism are useful. However, is this ease of redemption just likely to reduce availability compared to the old, less efficient way?

Possibly, but it depends on what you intend to book. I still find AA miles to be relatively easy to use for the international routes I want to travel.

' data-src=

This site provides solid information on miles awards for AA airlines partners

' data-src=

I am grateful for AwardWallet’s miles tracking program! I had nearly 90,000 accrued American Airlines miles nearly expire because of lack of activity due to living overseas during the pandemic. Now, if only American would follow United and Delta’s suit and stop allowing miles to expire!

' data-src=

I agree completely! Why do they expire? I almost had the same issue. My husbands were extended during the pandemic and mine were not which is very confusing. Trying to get those extended now.

' data-src=

Thank you for this comprehensive explanation of reward bookings! I’ve struggled over the years to navigate the partner bookings and this would have been (and will be) so handy! Great content!

' data-src=

Does anyone know if in Argentina there is a way to earn miles using a credit card?

Unfortunately, AA ended its partnership with Banco Santander in August 2020. That was the only AA credit card available in Argentina. In AA’s statement about the end of this partnership, they made it clear AA is ‘committed to the Argentine market’: https://www.aa.com/i18n/aadvantage-program/miles/partners/credit-card/aadvantage-credit-cards.jsp?locale=es_AR

en que forma estaría comprometida AA con el mercado Argentino aparte de alianza con banco?, lamentablemente el Citi se fue de este país . hay info de que otra manera se suman millas? si conoces la forma, las podrías comentar por favor? gracias

Unfortunately, my contacts at American Airlines aren’t going to be much help.

' data-src=

Thanks for the information!!

' data-src=

I think that this information is extremely useful for comparing the cost of miles for international travel. While I do not have any international plans at the moment, I will certainly come back to this blog spot to check the cost in different airlines. However, I have a preference for flying American to Europe and Latin America.

' data-src=

This is a great site with lots of useful information. Also a great idea to keep track of expiration dates in one place.

' data-src=

After AA and Latam ended partnership, the value of keeping AA miles dropped a lot for Latin America customers. Hope AA partners with another company in the region.

' data-src=

I wish they would add one of the two Korean Airlines.

' data-src=

My experience in using AA miles/points for flights with partners that originate in Europe (i.e., BA and Iberia) is that the fees and taxes added are so high that it can sometimes be cheaper to flat out purchase a ticket and not use the AA points.

As a follow up…I checked AA’s website to see the cost of a reward to book Iberia nonstop from Amsterdam to Madrid in late August: 25,000 miles plus $80 in fees and taxes for a round trip, per person. These high fees/taxes seem to be problem for award flights originating in Europe on many airlines. Booked directly with cash only on Iberia, a basic economy ticket would cost $131, including fees and taxes, Thus, redeeming 25,000 in AA points, instead of cash only on Iberia, would save only $51 ($131 – 80). My experiences using AA awards for flights within Australia, Japan and Latin America were much better, or at least a couple of years ago. Summary: don’t expect that you can get a good deal on awards that originate in Europe. Use your points elsewhere.

' data-src=

Thank you for miles

' data-src=

Aegean Airlines Miles+Bonus extended member tiers by 6 months back in March 2020 and lowered tier qualification requirements by 25% in October. Also extended tiers of some members who had not qualified by full 12 months in March and has done another batch for those expiring in April.

' data-src=

No es fácil usar las millas de American para canjearlas por vuelos de las otras aerolíneas, y además cuestan más millas.

' data-src=

So surprised to realize that this miles program is sooooo good!

This is really helpful! I had no idea this many airlines worked with American.

' data-src=

you can comment on this and earn 5 points? this is awsome!

' data-src=

Great feature. I linked my AA account to my AwardWallet!

' data-src=

I just registered for AwardWallet and linked to my AAAdvantage account. Thanks!

' data-src=

So happy to know the AwardWallet website can help organize and manage my rewards programs. Besides, earning bonus AAdvantage miles is a big plus to keep my miles from expiring. Thanks and keep the good job going.

' data-src=

So glad there was this post. I am glad that to know that there are alternative ways to use my points other than just through the one airline itself. It is a great way to keep mileage from expiring.

' data-src=

Love this new site! Great way to keep track of all my frequent flyer plans!

' data-src=

Hoping Award Wallet will be an easier way to keep track of my AA miles and expirations!

' data-src=

I’m ready to start flying again, but had to choose Delta for an upcoming flight due to the limited schedule on the commuter contractors and high prices out of my airport. How the airlines handle their businesses now that the pandemic is easing will contribute a lot to their future success.

' data-src=

Why is American Air the only major airline that still has expiration dates on your frequent flyer miles? Pausing the expiration to June not very helpful given the lack of air travel for most of us.

' data-src=

Great way to keep the points from expiring!

' data-src=

Esta es una muy buena opcion para utilizar tus millas, sobre todo cuando American suspende vuelos hacia tu pais, como es mi caso. Finalmente podre usar mis millas acumuladas.

' data-src=

I’m a bit disappointed that AA haven’t extended the period in which miles don’t expire, living in the UK there is no chance to fly at present.

' data-src=

I recently used AA credits from a cancelled 2020 trip to Jamaica. I was able to contact an AA agent that rebooked us to St Croix for June 2021. The best thing is that AA is still allowing to rebook this flight without penalties. AA did a very good job for clients during Covid!

' data-src=

For our family, the American Airlines partnership with Alaska and Japan Airlines has been great. It is very easy to transfer points. Alaska gives us great connections from the Midwest and Japan Airlines has great non-stops to Japan from the west coast or from Chicago.

' data-src=

new award wallet member. Just learning how to redeem miles. hope to travel soon

' data-src=

No es tan fácil usar las millas con las aerolíneas asociadas con AAdvantage.

' data-src=

I sincerely hope the relationship with Alaska and Horizon it’s going to be a bit more stable than before. I do like their connections and service even though simple it is reliable. I am a great American Airlines loyalist and always look for a good deal. Hence getting some extra connections thru Horizon and Alaska is awesome

The AA Anniversary contest seems promising, but so far I’ve won nothing but an FTD discount.

It’s a pity AA does not allow me to use the miles on Hawaiian airlines. Hope that they will start a partnership soon

' data-src=

Hopefully LATAM returns with AA and has better benefits since Argentina no longer has credit cards that add AAdvantage Miles.

' data-src=

Award Wallet makes it so much easier to keep track of where and how to get points. Thank you

' data-src=

I have recently created my account in AwardWallet, the information they provide about the AAdvantage program is very useful, complete, explaining in detail how the program works and ways to earn miles. I will continue to inform myself on your page what is extremely interesting and very useful.

' data-src=

Great info thanks

' data-src=

Awesome content, very rich in details. I’ll definitely continue to see more information in AwardWallet!

Greeting from Brazil.

' data-src=

Definitely a lot of changes in 2020 in the aviation industry, members leaving Oneworld like LATAM will affect those who wanted more options to go to Latin America.

' data-src=

One strength of AA is the number of Middle-East airlines in Oneworld, and I was impressed by the relatively short Etihad connecting flight I took years ago out of Kuwait to Muscat. There’s plenty of ways to earn AA miles even though its not a transfer partner, and there’s some AAdvantage (pardon the pun) to holding one of the credit cards. This was a great overview of how to maximize AA’s alliance partners, and takes some of the guesswork out of their extended route network.

' data-src=

I just created my AwardWallet Account. Looks pretty interesting, I have added a few other of my rewards programs as well. I would like to get more information to see if its possible transfer points from other rewards programs over to American Airlines and be able to extend miles.

' data-src=

I’d like to know if it’s possible to transfer from AA to elsewhere….

' data-src=

I just read in app “melhores destinos” that posting a comment on the AwardWallet blog will earn 5 miles to your American Airlines mileage account, hence extending the expiration date of your miles. I once lost 5,000 miles with American Airlines so I am glad to find an easy way to prevent that from happening again. Thanks AwardWallet!!

' data-src=

Came across Cape air while flying between the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. Inexpensive and frequent connections made this my “island hopper” of choice. Interesting to see other parts of the US have Cape Air service as well.

' data-src=

Terrific detail, thanks for this post. S7 was the one I’d never heard of — imagine planning a trip to Canary Islands via Russia! Europe, broadly defined 🙂

' data-src=

Great post! Thanks for breaking down the information by airline. For Latin American folks, just want to add that LATAM left the OneWorld alliance last year and the information on their website is very confusing on whether or not it’s still possible to redeem AA miles on their frequent flyer program (LATAM Pass). Tried to do so by phone last week after getting mixed information from them, but finally they said it’s not possible. Cheers,

' data-src=

All the benefits offered by this loyalty program are due to the lack of solutions that offer in relation to the problems arising from the pandemic situation caused by Covid 19. The consulates of the United States in several Latin American countries are not renewing visas for tourism and there is no estimated day to reestablish this service. Some countries like Argentina have substantially reduced the frequency of their international flights, which obviously reduced the supply of international flights. Given these problems, it is not understandable that this loyalty program does not automatically extend the expiration date of the miles. For all these reasons, the benefits that are explained in this note are not very useful for Latin American travelers, who will practically not be able to travel this year.

' data-src=

Great info on AA miles. All my questions answered there, thank you!

I just read that posting a comment on the AwardWallet blog will post 5 miles to your American Airlines mileage account, hence extending the expiration date of your miles. I once lost 20,000 miles with American Airlines so I am glad to find an easy way to prevent that from happening again. Thanks AwardWallet!!

' data-src=

' data-src=

Awardwallet is very practical for me to be able to have all the information of my mileage plans in one place. Very good article, unfortunately in Argentina Americam Airlines no longer has an agreement with any bank.

' data-src=

Award Wallet is already saving me money by extending my miles instead of buying miles. Plus with all the different ways to travel the world i can look forward to a more exciting retirement. MAHALO

No resulta sencillo encontrar el modo de usar el bonus que ofrecen por rentar con Budget.

Hay muchas limitaciones para aprovechar el bonus de Budget. No es tan amugable.

' data-src=

This post has been very helpful specially for me. I have travelled Asia using many of the helpful things mentioned in this post. Thanks to the author and awardwallet for keeping it up to date.

Glad we could help! And yes, Ross does some amazing work here at AwardWallet!

' data-src=

It’s a fact that American Airlines has contributed widely to the travel industry, and it leaves me no doubt that this article has helped me deepen my knowledge regarding AA. Thank you!

' data-src=

Hi, It is a pity that american airlines charges an extra for the main cabin and that you cannot request the change to a higher category. your mileage plan is still recommended

' data-src=

Hi Guys! This post is very useful to compare Flights Costs from differents flight Company. And now i can use my Smiles Mileage (Brazil Gol AirLines) to fly American Airlines! Very Happy:)

' data-src=

Muito bom! Interessante conhecer os programas de milhagem.

' data-src=

I’ve rented cars several times from Budget Rent-a-Car using the link directly from the aa.com (American Airlines) website, and the AAdvantage Miles never posted to my account. Beware when using the link and offer code U072400 to rent from Budget.

Budget mentions the offer here: https://www.budget.com/en/programs/miles-points-partners/airlines/aero-american

and it’s also available from the aa.com website.

The most I ever received was 100 AAdvantage miles, never the 500 I was supposed to have received using the offer.

That’s really disappointing. Not sure, but that Budget code might be old. I’m seeing coupon MUAZ001 and AWD# U072411 on AA’s website for earning 500 miles: https://www.aa.com/car/budget/terms-and-conditions/ad

Esta información ha sido muy valiosa. Permite comparar los costos de los diversos vuelos con las diferentes aerolíneas asociadas a American. Muchas gracias.

' data-src=

Wow, what a piece of work… Never thought I could find the whole information package inside a single, word-by-word useful article. Thanks lot!!

' data-src=

Hi, Now that LATAM is gone, how can I book flights with my AA Miles within SouthAmericas outside GOL Airelines? With Latam the destinations available where countless, now I am afraid that outside going to Brazil the options are limited, maybe none. Comments appreciated. Thanks, Lucas

' data-src=

It would be very useful if they inform the expiration of miles by mail

Gracias a American Airlines por las mejoras incluidas en los últimos tiempos al programa AAdvantage, Es mucho más sencillo reservar on line, sin tener que usar el telófono. Muchas gracias American!

' data-src=

I just signed up with Award Wallet because my American Airlines miles are expiring. My wife and I flew to Scotland on AA in April ‘19 and I used AA for a domestic business flight a few months prior. Due to Covid, our vacation plans to England were canceled this year. A bit frustrating that our miles are expiring due to 18 months of inactivity. We would love to jump on a plane and go pretty much anywhere right now but most countries are off limits. I know the airlines are hurting but I think AA is being a bit short sighted.

' data-src=

I recommend do not use Iberia’s Avios. It is better to use your AA Miles, and collect as miles every time you fly with Iberia, you will get more mile in comparison with Avios.

When will AA join the other major carriers and stop expiring frequent flyer points? If all else is equal, that could drive flyers to another carrier. Delta seems to have done well for years without expiring miles and now others like United have jumped on the band wagon.

I wish AA would get on board with the rest of the airlines and stop expiring points. This year has been challenging for planning travel and no end is in sight.

' data-src=

Una pena la ruptura de latam con aadvantage!

' data-src=

DEBERIA BAJAR LA CANTIDAD DE MILLAS PARA CANJE DE PASAJES

' data-src=

It is a shame that American have removed complementary premium seating benefits for members of other oneworld airline programs.

As a Qantas elite, that transPacific front row main cabin extra seat I was able to sit in last year for $0 now will cost me an additional $130+.

' data-src=

It’s a pity I didn’t enter this blog before, I was completely unaware of this flight alliances, I traveled with British airways last year, now I have 2836 miles with British, miles that I’ll never use because as AA is the program I regularly travel with. I learned that it’s far better to have all miles in one program instead of having miles among different airlines.

' data-src=

' data-src=

For me, awardwallet.com is the best mileage tracking system in the world, with it I can track all my mileage credits and hardly ever lose any miles. I highly recommend the awardwallet to all friends who want to improve their mileage account, and will never lose any miles again.

' data-src=

Hopefully, the zone based partner awards will stay for many, many, many years to come.

' data-src=

I would like to be able to use my AAdvantage miles in any latam airline or latam program, any suggestion? On the other hand, do you have information abut consideration from airlines regarding expiration of miles considering the current situation due to COVID-19?

' data-src=

Thanks! excelent info !!! thinking about my next roadtrip

' data-src=

I’ve checked a few times on the AA site for these awarebookings and I get a notice they are working on the site… Anyone able to get in?

' data-src=

Despite some criticisms leveled at the updated search tool, this is a vast improvement for those of us needing to travel on partner airlines. Currently living in Singapore, I have always had to call agents to check CX or JL availability, and you sometimes feel like you’re playing the lottery and not sure if the particular agent is running the best alternatives. While sadly I probably won’t be able to fly for a couple of months yet, I’ve just gone in to “simulate” far enough in the future and I am seeing all sorts of feasible options. Whether that’s due to reduced reservation levels or because the tool is excellent I guess remains to be seen.

' data-src=

One of the things they should add to the program is the capability of having the family miles in the same account so that one can make reservations directly combining the miles of the family members.

' data-src=

Yes, British airways Executive Club operate a Household account which makes it much simpler for families to use their scheme, both to earn miles and spend them. Works well. (Though, what isn’t as good with the BA scheme is the additional charges they apply over and above taxes and fees for many award bookings.)

' data-src=

excelente informacion ,detallada y completa para dejar archivada y recurrir a ella cuando sea necesario , y una muy buena herramienta que estaba faltando en america airlines

' data-src=

Good to know so many options as no one is able to fly from my country right now

' data-src=

Been feeling nervous about whether AA is going to go bankrupt.

' data-src=

Do you know if GOL Airlines from Brazil is now a partner? Tks

It sure is! GOL is listed in the article under AA’s non-Oneworld partners. Since it’s not bookable online, we didn’t focus on it in this post. But we have a lot more information here: https://awardwallet.com/blog/aa-adds-gol-mileage-earning-redemption-partner/

' data-src=

Good info! A few weeks ago, AAdvantage members can earn miles on Gol operated flights (and viceversa) but it’s a pity that we can’t redeem miles on G3 there is a lack within south America

' data-src=

Etihad bookable again on AA?

' data-src=

Thanks. Well summarised article, very useful. Will bookmark for when we can fly again!

' data-src=

This is a great comprehensive list. I like travelling outside North America and seeing all the partners certainly helps. The redemption cost table also helps with comparing to other reward programs.

' data-src=

That is certainly a comprehensive list. The problem I find that a lot of available flight choices are still not available on the system. It seems like I can find more available flights on the websites of other airlines.

' data-src=

Great information – have bookmarked for future reference!

' data-src=

Great research and post. AA’s partners are indeed a valuable group.

' data-src=

Really great post! Thanks!

Bookmarked for future use! thanks!

In my experience, Royal Jordanian doesn’t always show on AA’s website even when there is award space available.

Thanks Ian, we’ll take a look at this. There are definitely a few that are technically online, but don’t show all the options or result in errors when confirming certain itineraries.

' data-src=

Thanks! This is a great summary to take into account when flights are back (at least in my country where the lockdown is still present)

' data-src=

Some interesting redemption options here.

I used AAmiles to get one way from PPT to Sydney Australia on Air Tahiti Nui. 30K in business. Bargain.

Then I had to book by phone and assist the CS reps in finding the fares, but now it’s on-line it’s easier-though that means possibly less availability as everyone can do this now with little effort.

Congratulations to your success! It is fantastic to get everything done online.

I love all of your writeups!! Could you guys do one for BA too since that’s a Chase transfer partner? 🙂

We have it on our list to do!

' data-src=

You guys are amazing! You’re a fairly small team and don’t put out a ton of content but all of the content you do put out is top notch. I can think of another major site that constantly writes articles like ‘This major airline just added a new route to Asia.’ I’ve called them out a lot in very constructive fashion to increase their reputation and credibility but to no avail.

You guys though get your clicks through quality work, not buzzfeed-esque headlines. Bravo to you all and a huge thank you.

' data-src=

And, how long is that to do list? 🙂 Hey, you could write an article just listing your to do list. I’m serious, as any “coming soon” would surely excite some folks.

Interesting idea! I’ll discuss with the team and maybe we can provide teasers in the AwardTravel 101 group of the big guides we plan to publish in the next week. (And the to do list is VERY long right now!)

' data-src=

Thanks! I hear that booking on partners is often a better plan, but have never had time to research the process. This really helps!

More high quality stuff from Award Wallet. 🙂 I never expect anything less.

' data-src=

This is such helpful information. Thank you for all of your hard work.

' data-src=

Thanks! I hear that booking on partners is often a better plan, but this post really helps me with the research process!

' data-src=

Thank you for helping me to navigate through all the options. I really don’t know how else I could find out all of this information!

Travel doesn’t have to break the bank, especially when you’re armed with an Alaska’s Famous Companion Fare™. This tool offers a fantastic way to save on airfare by allowing you to bring a companion along at a fraction of the cost. It’s great for couples or families looking to stretch their travel budgets further and save both money and miles while traveling together.

So what is the Alaska Companion Fare and how do you get your hands on it? In this guide, we’ll dive into the intricacies of the Alaska Airlines Companion Fare and how to make the most of this credit card benefit. Here’s everything you need to know:

What is the Alaska Airlines Companion Fare?

The Alaska Airlines Companion Fare is a unique benefit offered to Alaska Airlines credit cardholders. Once issued, it’s valid for 12 months and allows eligible cardholders to book one companion ticket for just $99 (plus taxes and fees from $23). It is a one time use certificate.

The Companion Fare can be applied to paid economy class fare on one-way or round-trip flights operated by Alaska Airlines, Horizon Air or SkyWest. This provides plenty of flexibility, as Alaska Airlines has an extensive route network spanning North and Central America.

The Alaska Airlines Companion Fare is valid on paid fares only and can be redeemed online. The process is straightforward, though you must use your Alaska credit card to pay the primary fare and taxes and fees to qualify. Considering Alaska credit cards earn 3 miles per $1 spent on eligible Alaska Airlines purchases, this isn’t such a bad stipulation and can help you accrue some valuable rewards.

Both the primary flyer and Companion Fare flyers will earn miles on their flights, as they would on any other paid itinerary. The Companion Fare is reissued every year cardholders spend $6,000 and renew a qualifying card, helping some cardholders justify the annual fees on their eligible cards. Those who qualify will receive their Companion Fare within the first two billing cycles following their cardmember anniversary.

Alaska Airlines routes not a match for your home airport? There’s plenty of other top airline cards to choose from

How it works

You can use the Alaska Airlines Companion Fare on one-way or round-trip flights operated by Alaska Airlines and its subsidiaries. It’s issued as part of the welcome bonus and an annual benefit for meeting a spending requirement.

Once you’ve obtained your Companion Fare (either through the welcome bonus or for spending $6,000 the previous year), you can apply it to a one-way or round-trip flight. You’ll pay just $99 plus taxes and fees, which start at $23. This perk can unlock substantial savings on airfare on both domestic and international flights, since Alaska flies to a number of destinations within the U.S. and Central America.

The Companion Fare can offer tremendous value during times when airfare is high and you want to be able to save money. The ability to use it on one-way flights is especially handy if you want to redeem miles for one segment.

How to earn the Alaska Airlines Companion Fare

You can earn the Alaska Airlines Companion Fare with the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® credit card * The information for the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® credit card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. or the Alaska Airlines Visa® Business credit card * The information for the Alaska Airlines Visa® Business credit card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. . Both cards offer this benefit as part of the welcome bonus and an annual perk. Many cardholders won’t have a problem spending $6,000 on their credit card during the first year. After all, the spending requirement alone is $3,000 to earn each respective welcome bonus.

  • Alaska Airlines Visa credit card: 60,000 bonus miles plus Alaska's Famous Companion Fare ($99 fare plus taxes and fees from $23) after spending $3,000 or more in purchases within the first 90 days account opening. Plus, an additional 2,500 miles after adding a cardholder as an authorized user in the first 90 days of account opening.
  • Alaska Airlines Visa Business credit card: 50,000 bonus miles and Alaska's Famous Companion Fare™ from $122 ($99 fare plus taxes and fees from $23) after spending $3,000 in purchases within the first 90 days of account opening.

Beyond the first year, the Companion Pass can still be within reach for those who spend $500 on their credit cards every month. By simply charging household bills and everyday expenses, you can requalify for this benefit every year.

How to book with the Alaska Airlines Companion Fare

Booking airfare with the Alaska Airlines Companion Fare is straightforward. You can apply it to any eligible online booking. As long as you select two travelers during your flight search, your Companion Fare discount code will automatically apply to your booking. Here’s a step-by-step guide to redeeming the Alaska Airlines Companion Fare:

  • Locate your Companion Fare discount code by logging into your Mileage Plan account. Click on your profile and select the “Discounts and companion fare codes” link.
  • If you’re starting on the Alaska Airlines homepage, select the “Use discount or companion fare code” link under the flight search box. Or simply visit the flight booking page .
  • Enter your Alaska Airlines discount code in the designated box and provide your travel preferences. Be sure to select at least two passengers for the flight.
  • To find an eligible fare, look for a red symbol next to some of the fares on the results page. Select your fare and proceed with booking your flight as usual.
  • Remember to enter the Alaska Mileage Plan number of both travelers so everyone earns miles and makes progress towards elite status.
  • On the checkout page, review the final cost and ensure the Companion Fare has been applied. Remember, you’ll pay just $99 plus the cost of taxes and fees for the second traveler.
  • Lastly, remember to use your Alaska Airlines credit card to pay for the flights.

Rules for booking

While the Alaska Airlines Companion Fare provides plenty of flexibility, it’s also subject to a few rules. You can get fantastic value out of this perk, but keeping these rules in mind ensures you won’t be in for any surprises when it’s time to book your flights.

It’s non-transferrable

The Alaska Airlines Companion Fare is not transferable, meaning the person who earns the pass must also travel on the itinerary. However, unlike the Southwest Companion Pass , there’s no restriction on who the companion must be. You don’t have to designate a specific person – you can book a flight for anyone as long as you’re also traveling on the same itinerary.

It’s valid on flights operated by Alaska and its subsidiaries only

For starters, it’s only valid on flights operated by Alaska Airlines, Horizon Air or SkyWest. That means its use is a bit more limited than if you were able to use it on one of Alaska’s many Oneworld Alliance partners.

For example, the only international flights Alaska Airlines operates are to Central America – while that can still present tremendous savings on airfare, it’s not ideal if you prefer to travel to Asia, Europe or other regions covered by Alaska’s partners.

It expires after 12 months

The Companion Fare is valid for 12 months from the issue date and must be redeemed before this date. Your flight can take place after the expiration date, providing a bit more flexibility.

It’s valid on economy class tickets only

The Companion Fare is only valid on economy class tickets. If you are looking for a companion pass that applies to first class travel, consider instead a card like the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card (terms apply), which offers an annual Companion Certificate valid for a roundtrip flight in First Class, Delta Comfort+ or the Main Cabin on flights within the U.S., as well as Caribbean or Central American roundtrip flights each year upon card renewal (payment of government-imposed taxes and fees is required: no more than $80 for roundtrip domestic flights and $250 for roundtrip international flights).

You must book with your Alaska Airlines credit card

Lastly, you must use your Alaska Airlines credit card to pay for your flights – a fairly new stipulation Alaska Airlines has added to its booking rules. However, considering cardholders earn 3 miles per $1 spent on eligible Alaska Airlines purchases, this rule ultimately works out well for Mileage Plan members who want to earn valuable miles for future award flights.

Maximizing your Companion Fare

Strategic planning is key to maximizing the Alaska Companion Fare. One of the best ways to maximize value is by applying it on flights costing more than $122 – that’s the minimum cost you’ll incur when redeeming one. However, you should try to aim even higher to make it worthwhile. In fact, since you’re paying an annual fee of either $70 per company and $25 per card for the Alaska Airlines Business credit card or $95 for the Alaska Airlines Visa credit card, it would be ideal if you offset that cost as well. In other words: Try to use it on flights costing at least $200.

One great way to get your money’s worth is by using the Alaska Companion Fare during peak travel season. When demand is high, airfare can get costly and even award tickets will cost more than usual. In these scenarios, you’ll get tons of value by applying a Companion Fare to your reservation.

For example, Thanksgiving week 2024 fares between Los Angeles (LAX) and New York (EWR) can top $886 round-trip per person. With an Alaska Airlines Companion Fare, you’ll pay just $99 plus around $90 in taxes and fees. This reduces your cost for two tickets to $1,075, saving you nearly $700 on a second ticket.

You can also get more value for your Companion Fare by using it for international travel. Alaska Airlines operates flights to Belize and Costa Rica, which can get pricey during peak season. As long as the Companion Fare helps you stay within your travel budget and doesn’t cost you more than a stand-alone ticket, you’re sure to save money.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

You can find your Alaska Companion Fare code in the “Discounts and companion fare codes” section of your Alaska Mileage Plan account.

Yes, the Companion Fare can be used for one-way travel. This flexibility allows you to optimize it based on your travel plans.

The Companion Fare is not transferable. You can only use it to book a ticket for someone else traveling on the same itinerary as you.

The report ranks the 10 largest domestic airlines based on 21 key metrics, including everything from the "value of a point/mile" to "blackout dates for reward flights." The team also created three distinct consumer profiles, a "Light Flier," who spends roughly $355 on annual airline travel, an "Average Flier," who spends roughly $3,736 on annual airline travel, and a "Frequent Flier," who spends $7,117 on annual airline travel, so see how each program pans out for every traveler.

After looking at all the data, WalletHub named Alaska Airline's program the best in the business.

"Alaska Mileage Plan is the best frequent flier program of 2024, beating last year’s winner United MileagePlus," WalletHub wrote in its findings. The airline won thanks to its policy to never allow miles to expire, its high number of destinations and partner airlines, and the value earned by every category of traveler (light, average, and frequent).

It was joined in the top five programs by United Airlines and its MileagePlus program in second, followed by Delta Air Lines' SkyMiles, Hawaiian Airlines' HawaiianMiles, and American Airlines' AAdvantage.

The good news is, no matter which program you choose you'll likely be winning. According to WalletHub, seven of the 10 largest airlines are "offering more rewards value in 2024 than in 2023. On average, the top 10 airlines are offering 18 percent more value than they did last year."

"For any good and sustainable airline rewards program, it has to be a win-win situation. Consumers get perks such as priority boarding and free check-in luggage; gradually, they become more loyal to that specific airline, make more purchases, and spread more positive Word of Mouth over time," Wan Yang, an associate professor and associate editor of International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management, The Collins College of Hospitality Management, shared in the findings about what makes one program better than another. "Meanwhile, they will accumulate more miles with that company, which makes 'switching brands' more costly. Eventually, the airline company will gain great long-term benefits from those loyal consumers, also known as more 'Lifetime Value' from consumers."

Beyond the study, WalletHub also shared a custom calculator that allows travelers to personalize the results of the best frequent flier programs based on their own budget. This way, you can always pick the one that's right for you.

Alaska Airlines has expanded its partnership with Ireland’s national airline Aer Lingus, giving the carrier’s frequent flyers even more ways to earn and redeem miles with flights to the Emerald Isle and beyond. Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan members are now able to redeem miles for both economy and business class seats on nonstop transatlantic and intra-Europe flights.

Here’s what you need to know about flying Aer Lingus with your Alaska miles.

Economy award flights to Europe

Alaska Airlines still publishes an award chart , so you have some idea of how many miles you need to save for your trip to Europe. One-way flights in economy class from the contiguous U.S. and Alaska to Europe start at 30,000 miles and could go up to 80,000 miles each way, depending on demand. To compare, American Airlines, one of the few legacy carriers still using an award chart, offers award flights to Europe for 22,500 to 65,000 miles each way.

Business award flights to Europe

The range of miles needed for an award flight in business class is even greater. A business class ticket on Aer Lingus between the U.S. and Europe could cost you as few as 60,000 Alaska miles, but the most expensive business class ticket could be more than four times that at 280,000 miles.

Economy award flights around Europe

Ireland could serve as your gateway to the rest of Europe. Aer Lingus flies to 141 different cities in Germany, Spain, Portugal, the U.K., Italy, France, Hungary, and the rest of Europe when you connect through Dublin. Intra-Europe award flights in economy class will require between 8,000 and 30,000 Alaska miles.

NerdWallet values Alaska miles at 1.4 cents each.

Nationwide Alaska Airlines ground stop just lifted

Clint Henderson

The Federal Aviation Administration just lifted a nationwide ground stop for Alaska Airlines.

Late Wednesday morning, the FAA issued an advisory stating that Alaska Airlines was in a full nationwide ground stop. The advisory reads that "all Alaska mainline ... flights ground stopped."

A second advisory corrected that it didn't include flights at Horizon or SkyWest, Alaska's regional affiliates.

Alaska told TPG:

This morning we experienced an issue while performing an upgrade to the system that calculates our weight and balance. Out of an abundance of caution, we requested a ground stop for all Alaska and Horizon flights, which was instituted at approximately 7:30am PT. The issue was mitigated and the ground stop for Alaska and Horizon flights expired at 8:30am PT. We have begun releasing flights. Residual delays are expected throughout the day. We apologize for the inconvenience and encourage guests to check the status of their flights on alaskaair.com or the Alaska App prior to heading to the airport.

That issue has now been resolved.

There were anecdotal reports of some delays at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA). The carrier is based in Seattle, and that airport is its largest hub.

In fact, some delays and cancellations were showing up on FlightAware this morning.
