🎵 The 5 Best Sound of Music Tours in Salzburg [2024 Reviews]

Located right on the border of Germany, the Austrian city of Salzburg is known for its stunning architecture, breathtaking views of the Eastern Alps, and for being the birthplace of Mozart.

However, did you know that it’s also where the legendary film “The Sound of Music” was also filmed? Before taking the first SoM tour here, I funny enough hadn’t even seen the film and still had an amazing time visiting these absolutely gorgeous places.

After that, I immediately saw the movie so I could appreciate it even further, and have come up with a carefully selected list of the 5 top Sound of Music Tours available today! Let’s jump right in!

Best Sound of Music Tours from Salzburg

Quick answer: the 5 best rated sound of music tours for 2024.

  • Original Sound of Music Private Tour Salzburg
  • The Original Sound of Music Tour in Salzburg
  • Sound of Music / Hallstatt Tour
  • The Hills Are Alive
  • Sound of Music Tour by Minivan

Best Salzburg Sound of Music Tour Reviews

1. original sound of music private tour salzburg.

  • Duration:  4 hours
  • Departure: Hubert-Sattler-Gasse 1, 5020 Salzburg
  • Departure Time: 9:45 AM
  • Includes:  Driver/guide, Transport by private air-conditioned Mercedes E 220 or VW luxury minibus, 1-hour Edelweiss apple strudel cooking class and tastings (if option selected)

For me, a well-rated tour should always come with interesting commentary and a structured schedule to ensure seamless transitions between sights.

The Original Sound of Music Private Tour Salzburg offers all that and so much more, with some flexibility to check out a couple of extra attractions if you’d like. I didn’t know what to expect, but our guide truly brought the scene to life with plenty of passion, knowledge, and personality!

I love that this is a private tour with a small group setting, which made it feel more like we had a good friend taking us around to all the different sights!

We rode around in an air-conditioned Mercedes E220 which was very comfortable with big windows so I could soak in the beautiful landscapes as we cruised along.

Our guide was a very safe driver, and offered some interesting historical accounts as well as stories relating back to the movie that I’d never heard of before.

Our first stop was the Schloss Hellbrunn which was constructed in the 17th century and is known famously for being the site of the garden gazebo where Liesl and Rolf sang ‘Sixteen Going on Seventeen’.

Expand To See More See Less

After that, we took another gorgeous drive through Salzkammergut where I got some amazing videos of the towering Alps and glass-like lakes which you see in the first scenes of The Sound of Music, passing the little village of St. Gilgen.

Even though a relatively good amount of time during our tour was spent driving, it was still kind of tiring and I welcomed a 50-minute break at Basilika St. Michael.

Here, we had free time to explore at our leisure and we chose to take a little stroll around the picture-perfect Mondsee. I highly recommend grabbing a cup of coffee and their famous apple strudel!

  • Duration:  4 hours

  • Departure Time: 9:15 AM, 2:15 PM
  • Includes:  Air-conditioned vehicle, tour

This is yet another 4-hour SoM experience – one that I found to be one of the most affordable, “best bang for your buck” tours.

The Original Sound of Music Tour in Salzburg  comes in 2 options: both a large bus tour and a small group/minibus tour which is more exclusive (and more expensive). I did the big bus tour as I do find it a fantastically affordable option, so I’ll be speaking to my experience on that.

Another great aspect of this tour is that there are so many different start times to choose from, that you’re bound to find one that works perfectly around your itinerary.

I was a bit hesitant, wondering how it would be to be on a tour with so many people, but it almost made it more fun! I’ll get into the details in a moment, but I want to mention that there are no hotel pickups involved so you’ll have to make your way to the central meeting point first.

From Mirabellplatz in the center of the city, you’ll board the bus and head through the gorgeous scenery with the film’s soundtrack playing to really set the tone.

Me and the rest of our big group sang along happily to ‘Edelweiss’, ‘Do-Re-Mi’, and ‘My Favorite Things’ which instantly bonded us and made the whole experience feel surreal!

The Mirabell Palace and Gardens is where ‘Do-Re-Mi’ was filmed, and we got the chance to take plenty of photos in front of the Pegasus Fountain and steps!

After this, we made our way through the stunning views of the Alps and made another stop at Lake Leopoldskron which is like a mirror, reflecting the incredible castle by the same name (where the boating scene was taken).

We got to take more photos at the gardens of Hellbrunn castle, the glass gazebo for the kissing scene, and even Nonnberg Abbey.

Throughout the entire tour, our guides did a fantastic job telling us about the different landmarks and relating them back to the movie, complete with insider info!

3. Sound of Music / Hallstatt Tour

  • Duration:  8 hours
  • Departure:  Rudolfskai 38, 5020 Salzburg
  • Departure Time: 9:00 AM

This is one of the most magical small-group tours I’ve been in, with the opportunity to explore more of Hallstatt than what the other tours offer.

The Sound of Music / Hallstatt Tour  is a significantly longer tour than the previous couple, so if you’re looking for a full-day experience, this is a fantastic choice. Starting off early in the morning, it’s also a great way to get acquainted with the area if it’s your first time here.

I’m not sure if this is always the case, but I noticed that my tour and many others’ consisted of no more than 5 people, which was simply amazing.

We had a very personalized tour with our guide, who ended up feeling more like a friend who was incredibly knowledgeable about the subject rather than just a guide.

Our day started out with being picked up from our hotel by a comfortable vehicle, doing a short city tour of Salzburger Altstadt which is full of breathtaking architecture.

After taking plenty of photos and videos of the city, we then set out for Leopoldskroner Weiher, where we got to see the rear of the “von Trapp” house and the ponds the kids fell into in the film.

Throughout the sightseeing, our guide related it back to the different movie scenes along with plenty of behind-the-scenes info that I wouldn’t have been able to find anywhere else.

We then stopped over at the intimidating Schloss Hellbrun, where we also got to take some photos in front of the “16-going-on-17” gazebo.

Lake Wolfgang was something from a postcard, and we got to take plenty of photos there before exploring the UNESCO World Heritage site of Hallstatt on our own.

However, our guide was great at offering plenty of recommendations and I’d love to go back and spend a couple of days there. After that, we passed by St. Gilgen Mozartplatz and Basilika St. Michael to reenact the wedding scene from the film!

4. The Hills Are Alive

  • Duration:  8 hours
  • Departure:  Hotel pickup and drop-off included
  • Departure Time: Between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM
  • Includes:  Private tour, professional guide

This is my other favorite all-day tour of its kind, which I also found to be one of the best for seeing some of the best views of the Austrian Alps.

The Hills Are Alive Tour is indeed aptly named, taking you through nearly every iconic scene of The Sound of Music.

If that sounds like fun to you, make sure to lace up a pair of comfortable walking shoes and put on a jacket because it’s a day full of venturing through one of the most beautiful places on the planet.

This tour also includes a convenient hotel pickup right from the lobby, so there’s no need to worry about finding a meetup point or booking additional transportation.

I do recommend dressing comfortable, though, as you’ll definitely do a bit of walking around in nature. The transportation was very comfortable, with padded seating, plenty of legroom, and big windows to view the Austrian landscape.

The first stop of the day was at Mirabell Gardens, which I immediately recognized as the place where the “Do-Re-Mi” scenes took place!

We got plenty of time to stroll throughout the lush area, complete with the Pegasus Fountain and Dwarf Garden, which was really cool to see as I love Roman and Greek art.

We then took the elevator up to an incredible viewpoint, which is known for being one of the most impressive in all of Salzburg (we even saw a 1,000-year-old fortress!).

We then headed back down to the historical center, where we saw the Horse Bath, Festival DIstrict, St. Peter’s Church, and much more.

Leopoldskron Palace and Hellbrunn Palace were equally as impressive, before exploring the majestic Bavarian Alps, which you’ll recognize from the film’s opening scenes.

We then made our way to the top of the infamous Sound of Music trail followed by a delicious lunch consisting of traditional local fare before heading to the Lake District.

5.  Sound of MusicTour by Minivan

Last but certainly not least, is the 4-hour Sound of Music Tour by Minivan . This is the second-best option if you’re looking for a budget-friendly tour, though it is actually affordable while still being a small-group tour!

With a maximum of just 8 participants, you can rest assured that you’ll receive a personalized experience rather than just a cookie-cutter activity that you can find anywhere.

You can choose whether to meet in the center of the city or take advantage of their free hotel pickup service in-between the hours of 8:30 and 9:00 am.

The vehicle is quite comfortable, and with the big windows and amazing views of the Alps surrounding us, there was never a moment of boredom.

The first stop is Leopoldskroner Weiher, as is the case with most of the tours, where you’ll see the back of the von Trapp house and the pond.  After that, we saw the Hellbrunn Castle, which, in itself is quite impressive.

Here, we saw the 16-going-on-17 gazebo and had the chance to take some photos before checking out the glass-like Lake Wolfgang.

We followed it up with a trip to Basilika St. Michael, where we had a blast reenacting the wedding scene from the movie!

I felt like our guide did a fantastic job explaining everything to us both in the van and outside at each location, answering any questions we had.

The PA system inside the van was a great addition, ensuring all of us could clearly hear what the guide was saying as we passed different sights in real time.

Overall, it was a great time, with a top-notch guide, great organization and recommendations, and at this price, is really hard to beat.

Basilika St. Michael, Mondsee

The enormous success of The Sound of Music Broadway Musical by Rodgers & Hammerstein premiering in 1959 made film director Robert Wise and 250 crew members turn Salzburg and its surroundings into the Sound of Music filming location in 1964. And we took the Sound of Music film crew to the various locations where the famous movie was filmed.

Shortly after its release, the film became a tremendous success, receiving five Academy Awards , becoming the highest grossing movie ever and reaching cult status over the years. Both musical and film are based on The Story of the Trapp Family Singers written by Maria von Trapp in 1949.

Follow the traces of the Trapp family and take a tour through Salzburg and its surroundings. See the original film settings and just imagine being Julie Andrews , the main character in the film, playing Maria von Trapp.

Learn about the historical and architectural landmarks of Salzburg as well as the Lake District while enjoying the highlights of the movie. Relax and listen to the Original Sound of Music soundtrack and of course feel free to sing-along Edelweiss and many more…

Our live guide will tell you everything you need to know about The Sound of Music, the Trapp Familiy, the film locations and about the shooting.

2. Leopoldskron Palace

Sound of Music Tour: Leopoldskron Palace

The Palace at Leopoldskron is the most beautiful rococo building in the Salzburg region. It was built in 1731 by Archbishop Leopold Count Firmian as a residence for his family.

After 1837, when the Firmian family sold the estate, the building changed owners many times. Leopoldskron was a gallery, then became property of a landlord, and even the King of Bavaria can be found under the list of owners.

When famous writer Max Reinhardt, founder of the Salzburg Festival, bought it in 1918, it was in sad condition. Reinhardt renovated it, however, to its original beauty and used its garden for theater performances. Since 1958, the building has been owned by the “Salzburg Seminar in American Studies”, an institution that focuses on economy problems.

Schloss Leopoldskron was one of the most important locations for the film: The rear view was used for the Trap Family home . The family drank lemonade with the baroness on the terrace. Maria and the baron dance on the balcony during the ball scene, and the children fell into the adjacent lake. The Venetian room from the castle was copied and used as the ballroom for the interior shootings which were done in the studios.

3. Hellbrunn Palace

Hellbrunn Advent Market

Hellbrunn Palace, just a few kilometers south of the city, was built between 1613 and 1619 under the orders of Markus Sittikus von Hohenems.

As the Archbishop had spent part of his life in Italy he tried to recreate an Italian atmosphere in this castle and its gardens. Unlike many other palaces, Hellbrunn has undergone no style changes and so, even today, the visitor can enjoy the lively southern scenery of this renaissance park.

The artificial water games in Hellbrunn with numerous grottoes, trick fountains and the mechanical toy theater were built to entertain the noble guests of Archbishop Markus Sittikus. The Impressive frescoes in the palace halls are masterpieces of the 17th century by Donato Mascagni From Florence.

The Gazebo at Hellbrunn

One of the main sites from the film is the glass gazebo, setting for various love scenes, like Sixteen Going on Seventeen and Something Good . After a complete renovation, it was reconstructed in the park of Hellbrunn Palace. This is not the original setting, which was the garden of Leopoldskron Palace, but a more accessible one for visitors.

4. View of Nonnberg Abbey from the bus

Sound of Music Tour: Nonnberg Convent

Nonnberg Convent is the oldest female convent north of the Alps. It has been in continual existence since it was founded in the year 714 A.D.

In the course of its history, the Abbey was destroyed by fire several times, but it was always rebuilt by the rulers of the city and the church. Today’s building was erected in the early 16th century. The wooden Gothic altar by the sculptor Veit Stoss is especially worth seeing . It is located in the St. John’s Chapel near the gate.

The Abbey on the Nonnberg is significant both for the real Trapp story as well as for the movie. After graduating from college, Maria Augusta von Kutschera took a train to Salzburg to present herself as a candidate for the novitiate of the Benedictine Sisterhood. After serving as a governess outside the abbey she and Baron von Trappmarried in the Abbey Church in 1927.

The Sound of Music scenes shot here include the opening part where nuns go to mass and Maria returns too late. The performance for the song “Maria” was staged in the courtyard of the Abbey. The children came to the Abbey’s gate to ask Maria to return to their home. The escape scene, with the cars parked outside the Abbey gate, was also shot in the original spot.

5. Salzburg Lake District Area – St. Gilgen

Saint Gilden, Mondsee

St. Gilgen is situated on another popular lake of the Salzkammergut, the Wolfgangsee . Mozart’s mother, Anna Pertl, was born here. That is why a little Mozart museum has been set up in the city center.

6. Mondsee – Wedding Chapel

Basilika St. Michael, Mondsee

A large cathedral dominates the small town of Mondsee. It was once the heart of an important monastery. Founded in 748 on the ruins of a roman settlement, it influenced the culture of the region for more than a thousand years until it was dissolved in 1792. The wedding scene in the movie was filmed here, Maria , led by Liesl , walked down the aisle to meet the baron in front of the main altar.

7. Mirabell Garden & Pegasus Fountain

Sound of Music Tour: Fountain & Mirabell Garden

Its characteristic, large, symmetrical flowerbeds make this garden a good example of a typical Baroque park.

It was built in the 18th century following the plans of the famous architect F ischer von Erlach . Countless statues inspired by Greek myths can be seen throughout the park which is centered by a big fountain. In the film, Maria and the children danced around the Fountain singing “Do-Re-Mi”.

The Pegasus fountain next to the 17th century palace can also be spotted in the movie. The stairs leading up to the rose hill were part of the choreography as well.

Tour the Salzburg locations where the legendary musical The Sound of Music was filmed, immersing yourself once more in the story of the Von Trapp family and their nanny.

Nonnberg Abbey

The tour meets on Hubert-Sattler-Gasse street, where we'll begin our Sound of Music tour of Salzburg, visiting the Mirabell Gardens . This is in fact the very park where Maria, the Von Trapp's nanny, played by Julie Andrews teaches the children the famous song. Do, a deer, a female deer ... you know how it goes!

The route then continues, taking a bus to the  Leopoldskron Palace . The lake found next to this majestic historic building was also the scene of numerous scenes from the film. Do you remember which takes came from the Leopoldskron?

From here, we head to Hellbrunn Palace , where the famous song Sixteen Going on Seventeen and the scene where Maria and Baron Von Trapp kiss was filmed. Our next stop will take place in front of the Nonnberg Abbey , a monument intrinsically linked with the Von Trapp family.

From the historic center of Salzburg, we then set off to enjoy the bucolic landscapes of Lake Wolfgang and Lake Fuschl . These green landscapes were where the opening scenes of The Sound of Music were recorded.

Then to finish the tour we make our way to the town of  Mondsee , where we'll take a look inside the church that hosted the long-awaited wedding in the film. Don't worry, there won't be any spoilers for anyone who's yet to see the film!

Finally, with the sound of music ringing in our ears, we'll head back to Salzburg where the tour ends.

Musical - The Sound of Music

In 2011, the stage musical “The Sound of Music” celebrated its premiere at the Salzburger Landestheater. Since it was filmed back in 1965, the story of the Trapp family has become world famous.

A musical based on the life of the famous Trapp family

The story tells of the young novice nun Maria. Between the two World Wars, she came into the Trapp household as a nanny to the children. There, she fell in love with widower Georg von Trapp and married him. Their family choir made them famous, but finally they were forced to flee to the United States.

"The Sound of Music" comes home to Salzburg

Every year, many tourists walk in the footsteps of Maria von Trapp and visit original shooting locations from the movie, where Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer sang, danced and acted. For the longest time, “The Sound of Music” and the cult which surrounds it were practically unknown in Austria and Salzburg. But through the musical, a piece of Salzburg has now returned to its roots.

Performance lasts about 3 hours / one intermission

The Sound of Music is one of the most loved, watched and admired musical films of all time. It’s a Christmas/New Year essential on British channels!

It’s no wonder that millions of people around the world flock to Salzburg, the setting and location of the movie to dance on the same steps as the Von Trapp children, stand in the same gazebo where Maria and the Captain kiss and admire the sensational Alps that both encroach and liberate the family.

Meeting Point for Sound of Music Tour Panorama

Image of St Andrew's Church on Mirabell Place in Salzburg Austria

The meeting spot is outside St Andrew’s church and opposite Mirabell Gardens. You can’t miss the Panorama Tours bus terminal as they have a big office adorned with tour information including Sound of Music posters.

Address : Panorama Tours Bus Stop, Mirabellplatz / Corner Hubert-Sattler-Gasse 1, 5020 Salzburg

Why You Should Take This Sound of Music Tour Salzburg Austria

  • The point of the tour is that it takes you well out of the city of Salzburg to locations that are otherwise hard to reach if doing an independent filming location tour!
  • In addition, it’s hard to know where to go and how to get there without doing a tour.
  • During the tour, you get to visit the village of Mondsee in Austria, about 1.5 hours from Salzburg, where you spend some free time and get to enjoy real Apple Strudel!
  • The tour has an excellent guide who gives lots of information, inside info and back stories to the real Von Trapp family as well as Salzburg history.
  • While the guide is quiet, the soundtrack of the film is played. Amazing. I sang my little heart out!
  • This article has been split into Sound of Music movie locations you go on the Panorama Tour and other Sound of Music locations in Salzburg where you can independently find Salzburg The Sound of Music sites.

18 Best Salzburg Sound of Music Locations

Places you visit on the sound of music location tour.

Visiting these places is unique because there’s nowhere else in the world you can find these Sound of Music shooting locations. Most locations were not even built on set in Hollywood.

There are Sound of Music locations in Salzburg but also some places you visit on the tour that are difficult to find on your own, which is why you need to join the tour . There are other places around the centre of Salzburg that are easier to get to and probably naturally part of your Salzburg Itinerary which I’ve listed them later in the article as The Sound of Music Salzburg locations.

Leopoldskron Palace – Von Trapp Family Home (Back) & Lake

Image of Schloss Leopoldskron Palace, Sound of Music filming location. Image of large white castle in the back left of picture, trees back right and mountains far back with lake in front with reflection of castle. Salzburg, Austria

Sound of Music Scenes

  • This is the filming location Sound of Music used for the back of the family mansion
  • When Liesl sneaks out to meet Rolfe
  • The Captain and Baroness arrive from Vienna and talk
  • Rolfe delivers a telegram for Max
  • Maria and the children arrive on a boat and fall into the lake
  • Maria tells the Captain straight who then fires her before hearing the children sing
  • The Baroness and children play with the ball
  • The children return from visiting Maria
  • Maria returns from the Abbey

It’s located just outside the city of Salzburg and is a grand castle that dates back to the 1700s and used as a hotel today. You can actually stay at ‘Schloss Leopoldskron’ and with the stunning courtyard, fencing, lakes and views of the mountains, who wouldn’t want to stay here? Click here to see the hotel’s latest availability.

‘Trees, lakes, mountains’

This is the first stop on the tour. You are taken in your private bus to this location where you get out of the vehicle to walk at the back of the lake with clear views of the villa as your guide gives you insider information about the area and stories about when they were filming here.

Address : Leopoldskronstraße 56-58, 5020 Salzburg, Austria

Nonnberg Abbey

Image of Nonnberg Abbey in Salzburg Austria as seen through the bus window

  • Many of the outside scenes where the nuns are
  • When Maria leaves the Abbey
  • When the children come to visit Maria
  • The end of the film when the family escape the Nazis

It is still a nunnery today and while it’s within the city of Salzburg, it’s a fair walk from the centre and you are not allowed inside the actual abbey ( filming took place on the exterior and the inside was recreated as a set in Hollywood).

‘I’ve even heard her singing in the Abbey’

During the tour you will pass the Nonnberg Abbey while remaining on the tour bus and your guide will point it out. I advise sitting on the left hand side of the bus to get the best views and photos.

Fun fact: The real Maria lived in this convent when she was 19 and where her and Captain Von Trapp were married in real life.

Address : Nonnberggasse 2, 5020 Salzburg, Austria

Watch the film on Amazon prime to get you up to scratch with songs and quotes! 😉

Gazebo at Hellbrunn Palace & Hellbrunner Allee

Image of Shireen posing in front of the gazebo at Hellbrunn Palace with arch of flowers overhead in Salzburg Austria

Scene s From The Film

  • The glass gazebo is where Liesl meets Rolfe to sing and dance to ‘ Sixteen Going On Seventeen ‘
  • Where the Captain and Maria sing ‘ Something Good ‘ and share their first kiss. The romance spot!

The gazebo was originally located at Leopoldskron Castle but was moved to the gardens of Hellbrunn Castle.

‘Just some local urchins’

Next stop on the tour is the famous Sound of Music pavillion at this location where you get out and hear about the history of filming at the gazebo, snap pictures and walk the palace grounds.

The bus parks near Hellbrunner Allee, the tree lined street, which is the exact filming location where the Captain, Max and the Baroness drive and see the children playing in the trees.

Address : Fürstenweg 37, 5020 Salzburg, Austria

Frohnburg Palace – Von Trapp Family Home (Front)

Far away image of Frohnburg Palace, the Von Trapp Family Home from Sound of Music in Salzburg Austria

Film Scenes

  • Rolfe arrives to deliver telegrams
  • The Von Trapp children leave in clothes made from Maria’s curtains
  • Guests arrive for the Von Trapp’s party
  • The family sneak out the house before being caught

This was once a private residence, built in the 1600s. Today it’s, very aptly, a music school but visitors are not allowed near the location or to drive through the street but is still a great spot to see from afar (filming never happened inside the building anyway).

‘She used to sing that song, remember’

You have to pass this location on the way to Hellbrunn Palace so you will see it regardless of which side of the bus you sit on.

Address : Schloss Fronburg, Hellbrunner Allee 53, 5020 Salzburg, Austria

Mondsee Lake, Lake Fuschl, Lake Wolfgang

Imafe of Mondsee Lake in Austria

  • When Maria looks out the window on her drive to the Von Trapp house
  • Other panoramic shots throughout the film

During the tour, the driver will stop at these lakes for you photo opportunities as well as the free time in Mondsee to visit the lake yourself.

Address : Mondsee, Austria

St Michael’s Church in Mondsee

Image of interior of St Michael's Church in Mondsee, Austria where the Sound of Music was filmed

SOM Scene s

  • This is the church where Maria and Captain Von Trapp get married and the excellent scene of Maria walking down the aisle to the reprise of ‘ Maria ‘

Today it’s a church that people can still get married like in the film . It’s beautiful inside and outside so definitely worth a visit.

During the tour you will get the free time in Mondsee town to visit the church and surrounding town at your leisure. It’s truly impressive and a fun part of the tour.

Address : Wredepl. 3, 5310 Mondsee, Austria

If this is enough to get you booking on? Reserve your spot here !

Other Salzburg Sound of Music Sites

These are more common spots you can easily visit in Salzburg where The Sound of Music was filmed.

St. Peter’s Cemetery (Petersfriedhof)

Image of St Peter's Cemetery entrance in Salzburg Austria

No scenes were filmed here but it was inspiration for the the area where the Von Trapp family hide from the Nazis. It also has another connection as the real Uncle Max , Franz Wasner, is buried in this cemetery.

This is a cemetery still in use today so be mindful and respectful when visiting. When I came here it was late so the gates were locked but was definitely more reminiscent of the film at this time.

Address : Sankt-Peter-Bezirk 1, 5020 Salzburg, Austria

Mirabell Gardens

Image of fountain in centre of Mirabell Gardens from Sound of Music shooting locations in Salzburg Austria

Scenes Filmed Here

  • Maria and the children sing ‘Do Re Mi’
  • They dance around the fountain
  • They visit the gnomes and hedge tunnel
  • Famously dance on the steps with excellent views of the park

This is one of the best places to visit in Salzburg and it was where some of the most loved scenes were filmed. It’s free to roam the gardens, see the fountain and dance on the steps.

‘When you know the notes to sing, you can sing most anything.’

Address : Mirabellplatz, 5020 Salzburg, Austria

Hedge Maze & Gnome Park

Image of hedge maze in Mirabell Gardens from Sound of Music shooting locations in Salzburg Austria

  • Maria and the children run and skip through the maze while singing ‘Do Re Mi’
  • The gnome park is also while they sing this song and tap its head as they all walk past

The maze/tunnel is still exactly the same today and found within the Mirabell Gardens. Why not take a video of yourself running through and singing?!

‘A long, long way to run’

Mozart Bridge

Image of Mozart bridge in Salzburg Austria as seen in Sound of Music filming location

Sound of Music Scene

  • Maria and the children run across the bridge during the tune of ‘ My Favourite Things ‘ when Maria is showing the kids Salzburg

The bridge is still the same today as it was when filming occurred with stunning views in the back. You can walk across the bridge that was named after Salzburg’s other famous musical link: Mozart ! This is one of the most popular Sound of Music tourist sites.

‘Here. Look over here. See?’

Address : 5020 Salzburg, Austria

Residence Square (Residenzplatz)

Image of the main fountain on residence square in Salzburg Austria

Sound of Music Scene s

  • Maria sings ‘ I Have Confidence ‘, and Nazi soldiers march into the area during the Anschluss.

This popular square features a large fountain and many important buildings and is a nice place to visit while in Salzburg whether you’re a fan of the movie or not. It’s also the place where an important scene is filmed as it lets the viewer know that Austria has been occupied by the Nazis.

Address : Residenzplatz 4, 5020 Salzburg, Austria

Horse Pond (Pferdeschwemme)

Scenes From Sound of Music

  • Another backdrop when Maria and the children explore the city of Salzburg to the backing music of ‘ My Favourite Things ‘

You can visit the area today as it’s well located in the centre of Salzburg and near other attractions. It has an impressive horse statue in the centre and horse images on the walls with cliffs as the backdrop.

‘So we put in words’.

Address : Pferdeschwemme, Hofstallgasse, 5020 Salzburg Austria

Other Sound of Music locations Austria has include:

Image of mountains overlooking city of Salzburg in Austria

  • Winkler Terrace  – Can be seen when Maria sings ‘ I Have Confidence ‘ and a background shot for when Maria teaches the children ‘ Do Re Mi ‘.
  • Salzburg Marionette Theatre – You can actually visit this theatre to watch a production of the movie in one of The Sound of Music locations Salzburg still has open.

  • Real Von Trapp House – The real home of the Von Trapp family is in a town called Aigen and was used as a hotel.

How should I explore the locations of the Sound of Music?

You may explore the original shooting locations on the Sound of Music by bus, on foot or by bicycle.

The Sound of Music tours mainly offer bus transportation to all the different film locations so you don’t need to worry about getting lost whilst finding the exact locations.

If you are feeling active and have plenty of time to spare, you can walk to all the different film locations as they are relatively in walk distance to each other. This way you can wander around more and maybe find some beautiful spots in the surroundings to chill.

  • Compare Sound of Music Tours from Salzburg

Are there any Sound of Music tours departing from Vienna?

Yes, some Sound of Music private tours are leaving from Vienna as well, which include all the main sights, plus the visit of Salzburg. Taking a day tour departing from and returning to Vienna may be very convenient if you are staying in Vienna and you have not planned (or you don’t have the time) to visit and stay overnight in Salzburg. The price is higher since Vienna and Salzburg are quite far away and the tours are private for you. However, the cost of the private tours is fixed for a group (about 400 €), so if you are a family or a larger group (up to 8 people), it is still affordable. You can click here to compare the Sound of Music tours departing from Vienna .

Are there any Sound of Music tours from Munich?

Yes, of course. Salzburg is located only 140 km away from Munich, near the German-Austrian border. Therefore, you can reach Salzburg on a tour departing from Munich.

Most of the day trips leaving from Munich will include a guided visit to the city of Salzburg plus a complete tour of the most important locations in which The Sound of Music was filmed.

The-Mirabell-Gardens-Salzburg Sound of Music

The ultimate Sound of Music tour Salzburg, Austria

This summer Wandering Kiwi Jr and I fulfilled a dream. We are both huge Sound of Music fans – me from childhood and, well, she is a child – so we decided to indulge our inner von Trapp and experience the ultimate Sound of Music tour Salzburg.

I’ve been to Salzburg several times before and enjoyed the many delights of this exquisite, cultural Austrian city including Christmas markets and foodie delights. But this time it was all about the Sound of Music film. To my surprise Mr Wandering Kiwi wanted to join us. He is a latecomer to the delights of the Sound of Music but declared himself enough of a fan to want to tour Salzburg… singing.

One thing you need to realise before you embark on the ultimate Sound of Music tour in Salzburg is that Austrians aren’t really that into the Sound of Music movie. In fact you might notice that local people tend to roll their eyes when you mention the film and grumble about the coach tours blocking traffic.

However, in more recent years Salzburgers have got more on board with the phenomenon and in 2016 there were even a few events to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Sound of Music.

Funnily enough Germans know a lot more about it because there were two German films made a few years before the Rogers and Hammerstein created their Broadway show and Hollywood film.

It’s certainly a fact that people from all over the world come here to experience a little of the magic of the von Trapp story. For many people it is one of their favourite things to do in Salzburg.

Table of Contents

A self-guided Sound of Music walking tour

I have outlined my favourite walking tour of Salzburg before but here I will focus on the famous sites used as locations in the film. The best place to start is the Mirabell Gardens and I recommend getting there earlier in the day, before the tourist numbers build up. This where Maria and the children jumped up the steps between the Unicorn statues and tramped around the Pegasus fountain singing “Doh-a-deer etc”.

Take a quick side step into the oddly unique Zwerglgarten or ‘Dwarf Garden’, which was created in 1715 by one of Salzburg’s powerful Prince Archbishops. The sculptures were apparently modelled after dwarves who worked as entertainers in the court. Can you find the dwarf statue that the children patted on the head during the Doh-re-mi song?

Dwarf garden Mirabell Salzburg Austria

Next walk return through the gardens to Schwarzstrasse and walk along (or catch a bus) to the Mozart Bridge, a pedestrian bridge across the Salzach River. Remember in the film where the children cross the bridge as they skip off to their picnic?

Mozart Bridge Salzburg Austria

Once you have crossed it’s only a few steps to Mozartplatz and then a few minutes to the cable car up to the Hohenzalzburg Fortress. From the fortress take the path along the Mönchsberg. This ridgeline runs high above the city, with regular views across the beautiful old town, which is of course a Unesco World Heritage Site . Follow the pretty trails through woods to the Museum of Modern Art. The terrace of the M32 restaurant here has a wonderful vantage point for a coffee stop. Maria and the children spent some time looking out from the balcony here.

View from M32 terrace, Salzburg (2)

If you have time catch the lift in the museum down to the town level to see the famous early 17th-century Horse Pond in Herbert von Karajan Square, where paraded horses from the prince-archbishops’ stables used to be washed off and groomed. The children and Maria paraded beside this fountain.

Nearby is the Felsenreitschule or Summer Riding School, which is built into the Mönchsberg itself. This is where the von Trapp family performed at the Salzburg Festival before fleeing from the Nazis. The Felsenreitschule was created in the early 17th century in the space where rock had been quarried to build the cathedral. It has been one of Salzburg’s most important concert venues since 1926. its stage as well as arcades hewn out of the rock. Able to accommodate an audience of as many as 1,437 people, it is one of Salzburg’s most important concert venues. You need to arrange a guided tour to see the 96 arcades of this theatre, unless you attend a performance of course.

Nonnburg Abbey, Salzburg - Maria's convent

Now return the way you have come up the lift and back along the Mönchsberg past the Hohensalzburg  taking the path signposted to Nonnburg. The Nonnberg is a Benedictine monastery that served as Maria’s abbey in the film. Here under the shadow of the castle the outlook is over the city, green woods and fields, and towards the Untersberg town mountain. You can look into the same gates the von Trapp children did when they were asking after Maria.

View of Hohensalzburg from behind

Carry on down Nonnberggasse, past the charming villas and drop down to the grassy parkland below. At the crossroads of this park is a lonely cottage – once the home of the castle executioner. Don’t forget to look behind you … at the view of the magnificent Hohensalzburg Fortress.

Schloss Leopoldskron and Hohensalzburg Castle

On the far side of the park cross the road and follow a path beside a small canal through trees to Schloss Leopoldskron, known to many as the Sound of Music house. This rococo palace was built in the late 1730s by a Salzburg Prince-Archbishop. Now it is probably more famous as the von Trapp family house in the movie… but you can’t go in it unless you are something to do with the American educational institution that runs it. However, a wander around the willow-fringed shores of the lake is an idyllic way to spend some time and from the opposite side of the lake you get a great view of the terrace where so many key scenes are set.

Climb every mountain on the Untersberg

You can add this on to your Sound of Music tour through Salzburg or do the trip on a separate day. The Untersberg cable car ferries you up to 2,000 metres – often into the clouds – on Salzburg’s beloved town mountain. The views from the top are dramatic, taking in the lovely city and its surrounding green meadows, craggy mountains and limpid blue lakes. This is my favourite Sound of Music setting.

In the film Maria describes the Untersberg as her home mountain and the final scenes of the von Trapp family escaping over the mountains were filmed here. The opening “Hills are Alive” scenes were filmed on the meadows on the German side of the mountain.

Of course, crossing the Untersberg gets you into Germany rather than Switzerland and the family more sensibly caught the train to Italy and ultimately safety in the United States. But it’s a great finale so I’m not complaining.

Untersberg view Salzburg Austria

We spent a few hours up on top, walking and enjoying the views. Take care of the Untersberg’s sensitve ecosystem by staying on the paths. You can also hike up and/or down the Untersberg but it is a steep climb so make sure the weather conditions are good and wear good hiking boots.

It is easy to get to the village of Grodig, where the Untersberg cable car is situated. Just catch the No. 25 bus from the rail station or as it passes through the city.

The bus also passes Hellbrunn Palace so you could stop there on the way back to see the Trick Fountains and enjoy the beautiful parkland. As well as the famous summer house from the film, near Hellbrunn you can also see the house that was used for the facade shots of the von Trapp mansion in combination with the Leopoldskron terrace. It’s just along the avenue of trees, which also featured in the movie as the children rode their bikes – just one of the many Salzburg Sound of Music locations.

Take a Sound of Music bus tour

There are a few different types of Sound of Music coach tour in Salzburg. There is the original Panorama tour, one with Grey Lines, and also a Hop-on-hop-off tour. In some ways it is more satisfying to do your own walking tour of Sound of Music sites, with time to take photographs and get up close to the sights. On the bus it is often just a drive-by experience.

However, I also wanted a bit of ‘cheese’. I wanted singing and laughter and inside information. The best way to get that is on a coach tour. You should note there is a line of small print (in German) on the Panorama advertisement that states there will be singing on this tour. Just so you know what to expect.

I recommend getting there early to make sure you get a good seat. We were glad to be sitting at the front where the energy and sense of fun was riding high! Our guide’s name was Anna but she also answers to “Maria” or “Julie”.

The first half of the tour stopped at or passed various sights and was full of interesting information about the filming, the actors and the original story. There are screens on the bus on which we watched relevant clips from the film as well as some amazing footage of the actual shoot. Particularly the boating scene, but I won’t be a spoiler.

Hellbrun summer house Sound of Music Salzburg

The tour heads out to Hellbrunn Palace to see the summer house that set the scene for Liesl and Rolf’s “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” number and the “Something Good” duet between Maria and Georg von Trapp. It used to be in the grounds of Leopoldskron but was moved out here a few years ago.  If you want to tour the palace and grounds of Hellbrunn properly (highly recommended) you’ll have to visit separately.

One of the big bonuses of doing the coach tour is that it is an easy way to see the beautiful landscape of lakes and mountains outside Salzburg, especially if you have limited time. The tour travels out through the countryside past the gorgeous lakes Fuschl and Mondsee.

St Michael's church Mondsee Sound of Music wedding church Austria

In the lakeside town of Mondsee there is a half-hour stop to enjoy the surroundings and take a look inside the fabulous yellow church of St Michael’s, where the wedding scene was filmed. There are some equally fabulous cafes and bakeries.

Apfel strudel in Austria

I was starting to feel that the tour was a little bit staid but things brightened up significantly in the second half. That’s when the singing started, which really made it for Wandering Kiwi Jr and I. Anna turned out to be an excellent singer and we raised the roof with renditions of our favourite things/songs.

So how did Mr Wandering Kiwi feel about the tour? He wasn’t the only husband/father joining the tour with varying degrees of enthusiasm. He was a bit taken aback to hear the tour is four hours long… But as Anna pointed out, it’s only four hours of your whole life and a happy wife equals a happy life… Sadly, he felt it spoilt his warm feelings about the film to find out all the background information. It shattered the dream a little. Aaawwww!

See the Sound of Music at the Salzburg Marionette Theatre

To cap off your Sound of Music experience in Salzburg, make sure you see a show at the historic Salzburg Marionette Theatre, which has recently been inscribed on the Unesco world heritage list. This beautiful theatre on Schwarzstrasse has a range of productions which bring to mind the ‘Lonely Goatherd’ puppet play in the film and we were lucky enough to see their fabulous production of the Sound of Music.

Until only five years ago the Salzburg Marionette Theatre was guided by the Aicher family, who put on their first show in 1913. That’s 100 years of incredible tradition and artistic expression and the current directors are passionate about carrying their vision of what is truly a unique artistic language.

Salzburg Marionette Theatre in Austria

The performance is in English but there are subtitles on a screen in several different languages. In the lobby are displays of puppets and scenes from past performances and if you get a chance have a look at the Marionette Museum in the Hohensalzberg Fortress, where the theatre regularly sends puppets for display. These handmade works of art are created in workshops right here in the theatre.

Sound of Music Marionette Museum Hohensalzburg Salzburg

I loved it that at the end of the show the curtains fall back to reveal the puppeteers above the stage, looking strangely enormous and quite exhausted from their efforts (although still smiling). It is incredible to think of all the skill and sweat that go into this quality marionette theatre.

The Salzburg Marrionette Theatre offers a wonderful mix of child-like fairytale with a proper (grown-up) theatre experience and I hope that combination continues to share its wisdom for hundreds of years to come. I recommend getting a little dressed up and making a special night of it.

Buy a Salzburg Card

City discount cards are not always worthwhile but because everything in Salzburg is quite close and easy to get to, you do end up using the Salzburg Card a lot. It’s easy to order online or pick up at the tourist information office in Mozartplatz.

The Wandering Kiwi family used it for the Untersberg cable car (as well as the bus to the base station), The Hohensalzberg Fortress (and the funicular up the hill), Hellbrunn Palace (and the bus there and back), the Mozart House, the Modern Art Museum,as well as a few other random bus rides that saved tired little legs during our time in Salzburg. The card also got us a 10% discount on the Panorama Sound of Music tour (this isn’t official but ask) and part of the bus fare to Lake Fuschl.

A quick calculation shows that we would have spent a total of at least 100 Euros per adult on the above, whereas the 72-hour Salzburg card only cost 42 Euros. That’s a no-brainer.

We could probably have fitted in a few more included attractions but we were too busy singing!

Now go and watch the film again and be inspired to visit beautiful Salzburg to find out where the Sound of Music was filmed!
