Highlights of Sabah & Mt Kinabalu Tour

Highlights of Sabah & Mt Kinabalu

The itinerary did exactly as expected, showcased the highlights of Sabah. The additional activities exceeded expectations; tubing in Tambatuon village was fun for the range of ages amongst out group, on the night jungle walk in kinabatangan, we had the pleasure of strolling across an endangered tarsier. Our well-connected guide (Jerry) was actively involved in all activities and shared a wealth of knowledge, as a local. The connections Jerry has with the communities made us feel at home in Borneo. His professionalism and experience in mountain climbing made the Mt Kinabalu hike a personal highlight for me. A well-passed, humbling and spectacular adventure well worth taking.

The next best offering would be a jungle trek with a small group to see Orangurans in the wild - I would pay a premium for this as would all my extreme traveling friends.

Sabah Highlights Adventure 7D/6N

The tour definitely ticks off the highlights of this area. I got a private tour as nobody else had booked it for my time slot, hence, I got private guides and drivers which felt nice as it give me more flexibility and focus. I took a good book with me which kept me busy when I was in the jungle lodge and gave me a good break in this active tour. The crew of the snorkel trip was super lovely and all guides were very knowledgeable. The level of accommodation varies a lot. I liked the first and last hotel but the longhouse at the tea factory was too basic for my taste and I think an option to upgrade for additional money would have been nice. I absolutely loved to see orangutans, it was just impressive. Overall, I think that this tour was good value for money and I'd book it again.

Borneo Family Holiday Comfort Tour

Borneo Family Holiday Comfort

We loved our Intrepid Borneo Family Comfort trip in July 19. Sheila was our guide and helped make it a magical experience for us. Our 7 year old daughter loved the whole trip, from seeing the amazing wildlife to the stunning views and lots of fun and games with the other guests in our group. Sheila was great at looking after our group and was very organised and helpful. We even managed to see loads of wildlife up close which exceeded our expectations. The food was ok for vegetarians- both my wife and I are vegetarians. The accommodation was fab too. We would highly recommend Intrepid again, it’s great for getting to see lots in a short space of time - in a way that felt manageable and thoroughly enjoyable.

What people love about Wildlife Tours in Borneo

If you are looking for a nature holiday, I would most defiantely recommend Borneo. Saw all the wildlife I had hoped for and more. Our CEO with G Adventures, Ricky, was fantastic. Helpful, kind, knowledgable and very calm. Always happy to help and answer any questions regarding the wildlife or history of Borneo. The group was also fantastic, full of laid back, like minded, wildlife lovers, from all over the world. Thank you!!
This trip was amazing and exceeded my expectations. I loved the mix of culture, nature, hiking and relaxing.
Really enjoyed everything about the Borneo trip, the guide, Gobert was fun, helpful and pleasant. I would recommend this tour.

Borneo Eco Tours

borneo wildlife tours

Borneo EcoTours With Wildlife Experts

The rainforest of Borneo is 130 million years old, making it the oldest in the world. The Borneo rainforest is also disappearing faster than any other rainforest on earth, so it's at the very top of our "see it while you can" list of Eco Tours. Borneo is the center of evolution for many rare and endemic species, and one of the only remaining natural habitats for endangered orangutans, proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants and Sumatran rhinoceros. Like the Galapagos, many species on Borneo evolved in unique ways. A prime example of this is Borneo's incredible "gliders" — a group of mammals, reptiles and amphibians that have evolved to "fly" amongst the ancient trees.

The Ultimate "Weird and Wonderful Wildlife" Safari

Our Weird & Wonderful Wildlife program starts with a visit to an Orangutan sanctuary, and includes the best opportunities available in Borneo to track these most human of all primates in the wild throughout the trip. A combination of rainforest hiking and eco-responsible river cruises in electric boats allows you to get up close to the Orangutans, and also offer prime sightings of many of Borneo's most exciting wildlife, including Bornean gibbons, pygmy elephants, proboscis monkeys, bearded pigs, clouded leopards, marble cats and more.

Special expeditions — a signature of Wild Planet Adventures — include excursions to see Borneo's famous flying lemurs, gliding frogs and lizards, and nocturnal hikes to see slow loris and tarsiers, two of the world's smallest — and cutest — primates. Relax on a tropical island bungalow in the turquoise-blue waters of the Celebes Sea — one of the top 5 dive & snorkel sites in the world — at the end of your trip. No other Borneo itinerary offers more wildlife or more natural wonder!

Wildlife Discovery

Borneo wildlife tours: orangutans, frogs, turtles, and more.

Many visitors come to our island for a Borneo orangutan tour and although we share their love for the ‘Man of the Forest’, Borneo is bursting at the seams with other fascinating creatures. Join us on one of our wildlife discovery tours to learn more about our turtles, orangutans, frogs, indigenous birds, and many sea creatures.

In Sabah, try out a Kinabatangan River Tour on our 5-Day Best of Borneo Wildlife Expedition (opens in a new tab)  or maybe we can tempt you with a 3-Day Danum Valley Tour (opens in a new tab) where we enjoy wildlife spotting on treks, riverboat cruises, visits to conservation centers, and night walks . In Sarawak, spend the morning (opens in a new tab) or evening (opens in a new tab) cruising through the estuaries on a trip to Kuching’s Wetlands National Park. Join us for an evening of frog spotting in Kubah National Park. (opens in a new tab) The only difficulty is which one to choose!

We went to Bako National Park on a private tour. Our guide, Alex, had an encyclopedic knowledge and was able to explain a lot to us about the fauna and flora of the park. Thanks to him, we were lucky enough to be able to observe proboscis monkeys there.

Tripadvisor, may 2023.

I went on the Kampung local bike tour and had an amazing time! Great sights, cultural experience and local food! Ask for Farhah and u will be well taken care of! She is a rare gem of a guide with a wealth of local knowledge and a pleasure to hang out with.

Another wonderful cycle trip around Kuching with the very impressive Farhah. She made the trip as the guides do. She was knowledgeable, friendly, competent and made our half day very memorable. My second trip with this company; I learnt more than before. To have a local, passionate about Sarawak and her culture is priceless. Bikes were good and temp super. Finding hidden gems and eating with locals , made the experience special. Thank you Farhar and thank you to all.

TripAdvisor, December 2023

A very well curated trip planned by Paradesa, we did multi day trip with them which included cycling, speed hiking & kayaking. This was all inclusive trip with some great home stays & amazing home cooked food & wine’s.

It was a great holiday thanks to the planning & efforts of Paradesa and more importantly Farah & Lester during the trip. Farah is very knowledgeable about this region & thanks to her network of friends we had such a blast..

Will always fondly remember this experience!

TripAdvisor, January 2023

We had a great morning out riding seeing the city. We received great service, had a very friendly guide who was extremely accommodating with our young family. Would highly recommend.

Tripadvisor, june 2023.

This is my second trip to Kuching and my second time booking day trips with Paradesa and they did not disappoint. On this trip, I had my 8 year old and my 70++ parents with me and we did the Semenggoh Orangutan Sanctuary & Annah Rais Longhouse Day trip and the Wetlands Cruise. On each occasion, the guides assigned were helpful, informative and attentive to our varying needs (young and elderly both taken care of).

CanadianTraveler23

I went on a great walking food tour with Delilah, who was an excellent guide. In addition to eating all manner of interesting goodies, from restaurants, street vendors and hawker courts, Delilah gave us a great historical and cultural look at Kuching too. Highly recommended. Skip breakfast and come empty!

Anke Derks ⎥ August 2019

Google my business.

No need to have a big breakfast before you go, because you will eat plenty of food during the tour and enough water is provided. We both eat vegetarian and also that was well taken care of. Kelvin is a great tour guide. He knows a lot and could answer almost all our questions.

Learn more about Borneo

Best time to visit borneo.

Borneo's climate is typical for a tropical region - generally hot and humid all year-round.

Temperatures are usually in the low 70F ° s for most of the year, dropping back to the high 60F ° s at night.

Rainfall tends to be in short, heavy bursts followed by sunshine. The 'wet season' runs from November through to February but it does rain throughout the year, although our itineraries are rarely affected.

The state of Sabah is known as the 'land below the wind' as it's below the monsoon belt.

Culture and customs

The cultures across Borneo can vary depending on what border you’re closest to – divided into Malaysian, Indonesia and Brunei regions.

Borneo’s population is largely made up of Malay with the predominant religion being Muslim. The remainder of Borneo’s population is Chinese, Indian or belong to indigenous populations.

You may hear the word ‘Dayak’ used by locals as a general term referring to the riverine and hill-dwelling ethnic subgroups in Borneo.

Historically, most indigenous communities in regional areas lived in longhouses, though many have moved for employment in urban areas. That being said, there is still a substantial number of Dayak tribes that maintain a strong spiritual tie to the rainforest and have retained their customs and speak local dialects.

Food and drink

Rice (nasi) and noodles (mee) are dietary staples across the island and accompany most meals. You’ll find varieties of white, red and brown rice grown throughout Borneo – prepared by steaming, frying, boiling into a breakfast porridge, or cooking with coconut milk in a hollowed bamboo stick to make lemang.

Must-try foods in Borneo

1. Sarawak laksa

This Malaysian-influenced staple is a spicy broth filled with vermicelli noodles, bean sprouts, chicken slices, shrimp and coriander.

Skewers of meat (usually beef or chicken) are grilled to perfection over charcoal.

3. Roti canai

Fried roti bread that is crispy, fluffy and soft all at the same time. It might be served with savory or sweet fillings (from eggs and sardines to coconut jam and bananas), dipped into curry and lentil sauces, or enjoyed on its own.

4. Bamboo chicken

Chicken marinated in chilies, lemongrass, garlic and ginger is stuffed into a bamboo stick with rice, sealed with turmeric leaves and cooked over an open flame until all the flavors merge together.

Geography and environment

The South-East Asian island of Borneo sits just south of the South China Sea, with the Sulu Sea, Celebes Sea, Makassar Strait, Java Sea and Karimata Strait also surrounding the island.

Split up between three countries (Brunei, Indonesia , Malaysia ), the regions most visited by tourists (Sabah and Sarawak) belong to Malaysia.

Home to the oldest rainforest in the world, large cave and river systems and mountains, Borneo has an incredible range of biodiversity with hundreds of species of birds, bats, plants, flowers and insects living in this ecologically precious part of the world.

Sitting 4,095 m above sea level, Sabah's Mount Kinabalu is the third highest mountain in South-East Asia and a popular trekking spot for active travelers looking for a challenge.

History and government

Early history.

Early on, Borneo was used as a port for trade, with the Chinese and Indians stopping in on the coast as a part of their trade route from 500 to 1300 AD. The Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch and British were soon to follow. Because of this, Borneo now has a rich diversity of international influences to draw upon from these years of trade and interaction with other cultures.

With most of coastal Borneo falling under the rule of the Javanese Majapahit kingdom in the 14th century, the Sultanate of Brunei extended its rule in the north from the 15th to 17th century. By the 19th century, both the British and the Dutch had colonial interests in the area, with a dynasty led by James Brooke ruling Sarawak for many years. Brooke's interest in the area stemmed from his attempts at trade in the Far East and connections to the Sultanate of Brunei. Brooke's rule was fraught with controversy and battles with the Sea Dayak people, who interrupted trade and were labeled as pirates. James Brook was succeeded by his nephew, Charles, and then his son, Vyner, in this rule known as the 'White Rajahs' of Sarawak.

Recent history

Japan took control of Borneo during World War II, resulting in a high number of deaths for the local population. During the war, many British and Australian prisoners of war were sent to Borneo, with the most notorious spots being Sandakan where thousands of Allied soldiers perished due to disease, malnutrition and exhaustion.

By the conclusion of the war in 1945, Borneo was freed from the Japanese yet only two decades later, Borneo was the site of more conflict, this time between Indonesia and Malaysia. This conflict arose from the union of Sabah and Sarawak with Malaya in the Federation of Malaysia in 1963. More recently, the Sultanate of Brunei became an independent nation (in 1984).

Palm oil plantations have spread rapidly throughout Borneo in the last ten years, mainly due to the decline in the rubber industry. While these plantations have provided jobs and helped the economy in the short term, their proliferation has led to wide-scale deforestation, which surmounts to devastating habitat loss for many of Borneo's endangered species and displacement of indigenous people who rely on the forests and jungles to sustain their hunter-gatherer lifestyles.

Top 10 nature spots of Borneo

1. mount kinabalu.

Seeing sunrise from the top of Mount Kinabalu is a fine payoff for making it to the top. The climb, while strenuous, is filled with beautiful flora, interesting animals and beautiful vistas - making this majestic mountain a true natural highlight of Borneo.

2. Poring Hot Springs

Located within the Kinabalu National Park, these steaming hot pools of water provide a relaxing place to unwind after trekking Mount Kinabalu. Sliding into the open air baths is a therapeutic way to soothe your muscles - a nice outdoor reward for completing such a climb!

3. Bako National Park

The oldest national park in Sarawak may be small, but with isolated beaches, jungles, waterfalls, rock formations and walking trails, visitors will be delighted in the perfect panoramas to photograph and range of wildlife viewing opportunities on offer.

4. Turtle Island

Lying just north of Sandakan, Turtle Island Park is a haven for endangered green and hawksbill turtles. Witnessing turtles landing onshore at dusk, or baby turtles hatching, is one of life's most unforgettable moments.

5. Kinabatangan

This district of Sabah is know for its incredible array of wildlife and diversity of habitat, with limestone caves, swamps, rivers, lakes, forests and mountains all contributing to the ecological diversity of the area. Home to such rare species as the Asian elephant, the proboscis monkey and the Sumatran rhinoceros, a visit to the jungle here will guarantee some wildlife viewing thrills.

Meeting the gentle orangutans of Sepilok is a must-do for visitors to Borneo. These orange-tinged creatures are captivating, entertaining and cheeky - and watching them play, eat and interact in the jungle of Sepilok is a privilege not to be missed.

7. Headhunters' Trail

Walking in the footsteps of one of the world's most mysterious, feared and intriguing people may not be for everyone, but walking along the famed Headhunter's Trail reveals a little bit of local history as well as many wondrous natural sights.

8. Mulu National Park

Visitors should overlook Mulu National Park at their own peril. Not visiting this World Heritage-listed area would mean missing out on canopy walks and treks that reveal exotic creatures, spectacular caves and stunning limestone karst formations.

9. Danum Valley

This area of pristine lowland rainforest is arguably one of Borneo's premier wildlife hot spots. Walk the trails and spot exotic birdlife, interesting plants, flying squirrels, vocal frogs and active gibbons.

10. Gaya Island

Get away from it all and revel in the seclusion of Gaya Island, located just off the coast of Kota Kinabalu. See tropical fish swimming through colorful reefs, learn to scuba dive, laze on the uncrowded beaches or grab a kayak and go exploring this slice of tropical beauty.

While Borneo's wild landscapes and beautiful beaches are definitely the true highlight of any visit, there are still treasures to found in Borneo's markets.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Borneo

1. Ikat weaving

This traditional weaving process results in colored, patterned textiles that can be used as clothing, wall hangings and home furnishings.

2. Wood carvings

Sarawak boasts a population of talented wood carvers -wooden bowls, charms, masks and figurines are all wonderful souvenir choices.

3. Ceramics

Sarawak also has a wide range of good-quality ceramics and pottery thanks to the local populations of Chinese and Iban tribal potters, each group possessing their own distinctive style.

Festival and events in Borneo

Rainforest world music festival.

The diversity of world music is celebrated over three days each July in the heart of the Borneo jungle. Hoards of eager festival-goers flock to Kuching, Sarawak (in Malaysian Borneo) for daytime music workshops, cultural and craft displays and evening concerts by indigenous performers from all over the globe. And like every good festival, there are always plenty of food stalls serving up yummy Malaysian and Asian foods.

Borneo International Kite Festival

Each September, the seaside town of Bintulu shows us how cool kites can be. Kites of all shapes, colors and sizes fill the sky for stunning displays and kite flying competitions. Come and watch the others show off their skills, participate in a kite-making workshop or take in the cultural performances.

Gawai Dayak (Harvest Festival)

More than just a celebration of the rice harvest, Gawai Dayak is an important symbol of unity for the Dayak and is celebrated with gusto in cities and rural villages across Sarawak. Many longhouses open their doors to visitors, where they are treated to traditional costumes, ritual music and lots of locally brewed rice wine (tuak) and Dayak foods. Head to the Sarawak Cultural Village in Kuching for the liveliest celebrations, where parades and other festivities begin a week before the main event on May 31.

Borneo Cultural Festival

Hear, see and taste the best of Malay, Chinese and Dayak culture at this annual July festival. Lively music, traditional dances and other cultural performances take place on multiple stages over 10 days in the city of Sibu in Sarawak (Malaysian Borneo). Expect Dayak drums, Malay songs, Chinese dragon dances and lots of mouth-watering cultural eats.

JOURNEY TO THE HEART OF BORNEO WITH OUR ECO & WILDLIFE ADVENTURE TOUR

The Malay Archipelago’s natural beauty and unique wildlife are so extraordinary that they inspired British naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace’s theories of natural selection in the 1800s.

On our jungle adventure, we travel to the Malay Archipelago in Southeast Asia to the world’s third- largest island, Borneo, where jungles and rainforests dominate the landscape and life flourishes beneath the forest canopy. With some of the world’s oldest rainforests (second only to Australia’s Daintree Rainforest), it is no surprise that this rugged island is extremely rich in biodiversity. Some 222 mammals, 420 birds, 150 reptiles, 100 amphibians and 394 fish species call the island home.

We will also encounter Borneo’s most iconic species, the Orangutan (meaning “man of the forest” in Malay). Orangutans are highly intelligent creatures, sharing 96.4% of their genes with humans. They are also the only great ape to be found in Asia. Today, wild populations only exist in Bornean and Sumatran rainforests, so getting a glimpse of these gentle giants in their natural setting is a rare and beautiful opportunity.

We also hope to find more well-known species, including pygmy elephants, clouded leopards, rhinoceros hornbills, saltwater crocodiles, and the rare proboscis monkeys.

Borneo is also home to 15,000 plants, including pitcher plants, orchids, conifers and rhododendrons. Bird watchers, botany enthusiasts and general wildlife viewers alike will be delighted by the sheer variety of fauna and flora and the significant parts of the rainforest that remain intact despite pressures from deforestation in recent decades.

Orangutans are the only primarily arboreal great ape and are actually the largest tree-living mammal in the world.

Arrive Kota Kinabalu, Borneo

Arrive in Kota Kinabalu (or KK, as it’s known locally), on the northwestern coast of Borneo. Take the day at leisure to acclimate. If you’re up for it, go for a walk in the bustling city and explore its vibrant and diverse markets, boardwalks and beaches. Meet your expedition leader and fellow travelers at a welcome dinner. Overnight at Shangri-La Tanjung Aru .

Kota Kinabalu / Lahad Datu / Danum Valley

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for a flight to Lahad Datu in the Eastern Sabah state. Travel overland by vehicle to Danum Valley Conservation Area, the largest contiguous virgin rainforest remaining in Southeast Asia. Danum protects nearly 200 square miles of lowland forest, and is recognized as one of the world’s most complex ecosystems. It is home to a staggering array of wildlife, including Bornean Orangutan, Western Tarsier, Sambar Deer, Proboscis Monkey, Red-leaf Monkey, Bornean Gibbon, Pygmy Elephant and Clouded Leopard, to name but a few. Upon arrival, settle into your bungalow at the Borneo Rainforest Lodge . Enjoy lunch, then head out for an afternoon trek on the lodge’s nature trails and elevated canopy walkways. As the sun sets, listen for Bearded Pig rooting under the bungalows. Dinner and overnight at Borneo Rainforest Lodge .

Danum Valley

Rise each morning to the din of gibbons and the raucous laughter of Helmeted Hornbills. Take two full days to explore further on foot and by vehicle, searching for animals, including the elusive orangutan. Danum Valley has been designated an Important Bird Area, and is home to nearly 350 species, including the Great Argus Pheasant, eight species of hornbills, seven species of jewel-like pittas, and the bizarre Borneo Bristlehead. Enjoy night drives looking for the diminutive Leopard Cat, Common and Small-toothed Palm Civets, Black and Red Giant Flying Squirrels, and the curious Bornean Colugo. With luck and persistence, you may also encounter the rare Marbled Cat, Western Tarsier, or even Bornean Clouded Leopard. Dinners and overnights at Borneo Rainforest Lodge.

Danum Valley / Kinabatangan

This morning, drive north toward the dense mangrove forests of Lower Kinabatangan Segama Wetlands, Malaysia’s largest Ramsar site and home to one of the highest wildlife concentrations in Southeast Asia. Here, wild orangutans, Proboscis and Hose’s Leaf Monkeys, Crab–eating and Pig-tailed Macaques, Pygmy Elephant, and a great array of birdlife dwell within the dense riverine forest. At the village of Sukau, board a boat for the final stretch to the lodge via the Kinabatangan River. After lunch, enjoy an afternoon river cruise, looking for wildlife along the river edge. Dinner and overnight at Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort.

Kinabatangan Wetlands

Spend time today on the river, starting with an early morning cruise. Watch Proboscis Monkeys waking from their slumbers in the mangroves, performing death-defying acrobatics over the water in attempts to evade the ever-watchful Saltwater Crocodiles frequenting the backwaters. Explore the river’s tributaries, looking for Hose’s and Silvered Langurs, Crab-eating Macaque, Storm’s Stork, and orangutan feeding at fruiting figs along the banks. This evening, take a spotlighting boat ride, and keep watch for Flat-headed Cat patrolling the banks, Slow Loris moving through the canopy, and Buffy Fish Owl on the hunt. Dinner and overnight at Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort.

Kinabatangan / Deramakot Forest Reserve

After breakfast, take a boat back to Sukau, then travel west by vehicle to Deramakot. Despite its status as a “reduced impact logging” concession (10% is entirely protected for conservation), Deramakot remains one of Sabah’s best wildlife-viewing destinations, with 75% of Sabah’s mammal species found within its 210 square miles of mixed lowland forest. Settle into your basic park-style chalet at base camp and enjoy dinner, followed by an evening spotlighting drive to look for Common Palm Civet, Leopard Cat and Sambar Deer. Dinner and overnight at Deramakot Chalets.

Deramakot Forest Reserve

Savor the surprisingly well-preserved forest surroundings—Deramakot has the rare distinction of being the longest certified “well-managed” rainforest concession in the world, since 1997.For three full days, enjoy morning and evening game drives to look for Bornean Orangutan, Sun Bear, Wild Boar, Binturong, Pygmy Elephant, Banteng, and Clouded Leopard, as well as a wide array of birds, from kingfishers and broadbills to pittas and the reserve’s “featured” species, Helmeted and Wreathed Hornbills. Learn about the reserve’s Reduced Impact Logging (RIL) and the measures it takes to preserve habitat for wildlife. See RIL in action along several jungle hiking trails. Dinners and overnights at Deramakot Chalets.

Deramakot / Sepilok Rehabilitation Center

Leave Deramakot this morning, heading northeast to Sepilok. After lunch, visit the world-renowned Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center, started in 1964 to help baby orangutan orphaned by logging, hunting, and the illegal pet trade. Get close-up views of some of the center’s 300 babies as they come in for their afternoon feeding.  This evening take a  walk to look for Red Giant Flying Squirrel, Slow Loris, or even the scarce Malay Stink Badger. Dinner and overnight at Sepilok Nature Resort .

Sepilok / Kota Kinabalu / Rasa Ria Reserve

After breakfast, visit the nearby Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Center, founded in 2008 to rehabilitate orphaned Malayan Sun Bear, the world’s smallest bear species. Then, head to the airport for a flight back to Kota Kinabalu. Take the rest of today to explore the 400-acre nature reserve on the hotel’s property. Dinner and overnight at Shangri La Rasa Ria Resort.

Rasa Ria Reserve – Mt. Kinabalu

Enjoy breakfast seaside, then drive to Mt. Kinabalu, which at 13,000 feet is the highest point between the Himalayas and New Guinea. Explore the montane rainforest surrounding the park headquarters, home to more than 800 orchid species and five kinds of carnivorous pitcher plants. Look for Jentinck’s and Prevosts’ Squirrels, and some 300 species of birds, including minivets, babblers, laughing-thrushes, and the endemic Whitehead’s Broadbill and Short-tailed Magpie. This afternoon, visit the lowland rainforest on the other side of the mountain to hike among the largest mosses on Earth and more than 600 species of fern—exceeding the number found on the entire African mainland. See colorful butterflies and hornbills. With luck, you may also spot the incredible Rafflesia flower. Return to the hotel for a farewell dinner with fellow travelers. Dinner and overnight at Shangri La Rasa Ria Resort.

Kota Kinabalu / Depart Borneo

After breakfast, head to the Kota Kinabalu airport for your international flights home.

Wildlife Tours to Borneo

The third largest island in the world, Borneo ranks as one of the planet’s top wildlife destinations. The prospect of thrilling orang-utan encounters is incentive enough to visit, yet the island has so much more to entice you. That includes vast tracts of pristine rainforest, countless coral islands, mighty mountains, remote tribes, jungle-fringed rivers and extensive cave systems.

The human-like orang-utans (the name means man of the forest in Malay) head an impressive assortment of 10 primate species including gibbons, proboscis monkeys, the bizarre-looking western tarsier and the aptly named slow loris. Among the 40 other mammal species, diminutive Borneo pygmy elephants roam the forest trails together with sun bears, bearded pigs and the elusive clouded leopard. There are over 600 species of birds, many rare orchids, various carnivorous pitcher plants and an amazing twelve species of Rafflesia, the world’s largest flower. Underwater, Borneo has some of the tropics’ most diverse coral reefs, and large numbers of marine turtles nest on its numerous sandy beaches.

Borneo is divided politically between the small sultanate of Brunei, the Indonesian state of Kalimantan and the two East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak: it is these latter two states on which we focus our tours here. (If you are interested in visiting Kalimantan, please see our Indonesia section.)

Our selection of carefully-crafted itineraries cover a wide range of interests and budgets. Whether you are a family craving rainforest adventure; a primate fan looking for unforgettable orang-utan encounters; a passionate snorkeller searching for the perfect coral reef or an ardent mammal enthusiast seeking out the rarities of the deep rainforest. We have something for everyone.

Travel & climate, when to visit borneo.

Borneo has a tropical climate and is typically hot and humid throughout the year.  You can expect a mix of warm sunshine and thundery downpours at any time you visit.  However, the driest months – and conventionally the best time to visit – are usually from March to October.

It is best to avoid the months of November, December, January and February when the north east monsoon typically brings heavy rains to the whole island. This is usually followed by a dry spell in March, April and May.

The west coast of Sabah can also be affected by the south west monsoon blowing in heavy showers any time from May to October. However, Borneo is located far enough south to avoid the worst of the Pacific’s typhoons, gaining Sabah the title of “Land Beneath The Wind”.
