Voyager 4 Berth Campervan from Britz Rentals in Victoria, Australia

Voyager Campervan Review Britz Rentals Melbourne Victoria Australia Campervan Hire Voyager Caravan

So you’re ready for an Australian road trip but you need a vehicle. Rent a campervan from Britz and set out into the great outdoors. They have a branch in Melbourne (among other locations), to launch your trip around Victoria or beyond. The Voyager 4 Berth reviewed here is one of the campervan options that Britz offers. Exploring Victoria in a Voyager will put beautiful places like Wilsons Promontory and Phillip Island right at your door.

At around five and a half meters long and 2.8 meters tall, the Britz Voyager is not a massive full-length mobile home (like the ones you always get stuck behind when you’re traveling). Instead, the Voyager is van-sized and agile. The campervan is easy to park and maneuver wherever you go, whether it’s in a peaceful wooded campground or a chaotic urban setting.

The interior of the Voyager is compact and cleverly laid out to maximize the space available. Behind the cab of the vehicle there is a kitchette and an area that transforms from dining room seating by day to a bed for sleeping at night. If you are traveling from America or somewhere else outside Australia, renting a campervan can cut down on the gear you have to carry.

Each campervan comes with bedding and everything needed for cooking and dining (except the food of course). With a campervan rental, you have the freedom to travel with just a suitcase of clothing. Hit the market and pick up local food to enjoy meals in the campervan wherever you go.

Britz Voyager

The kitchen includes a lot of the amenities that you are used to from home, like a small refrigerator, microwave, double burner gas stove, kettle, toaster, and a sink attached to a water tank for pressurized cold water. To assist in food prep there are mixing bowls, a colander, frying pans, sauce pans, cooking utensils, a cutting board, and a can opener. When it’s time to eat, there are plates, bowls, cups, glasses, knives, forks, and spoons for four.

The microwave and power outlets will work when the campervan is plugged into an external power source. The refrigerator can be powered off this external source as well, but it will also keep your food cold with battery power. The campervan is equipped with a second battery, so that you can use the overhead lights, water pump, and refrigerator without worrying about draining the same battery that starts the engine. While you drive, the second battery will recharge. If you keep the campervan in place for more than a couple days, you will want to plug it in to keep the battery charged and the refrigerator cold. The easiest way to do this is to stay overnight at a powered site at a holiday park. A perk of renting from Britz is that you’ll receive a ten percent discount at each Big 4 Holiday Parks in Australia, like their Phillip Island Caravan Park .

Behind the kitchen there is U-shaped seating around a swiveling removable table. Beneath the seats there is storage for your personal belongings. To create a queen sized bed (with a nightstand/armrest extending in on one corner of the bed), reposition the table, add wooden panels, and rearrange the cushions. It will probably take you longer to brush your teeth and put on pajamas than it will to make the bed.

Above the main bed, you can assemble more panels to create a lofted bed just below the ceiling. The van comes with a short ladder that you can use to get up to the loft. For families, the lofted bed would work well as a sleeping area for one or two older children. There is thinner cushioning on the upper bed, and not much space for comfort below the ceiling (you can’t sit up in the upper bed), so the loft would begin to feel pretty cramped for adults on a multiple night trip. While the Voyager can legally seat five people while driving (three in the cab and two in the back) and there is sleeping for four people, you may not want to sleep four adults in the campervan for more than a long weekend. The Voyager is probably most comfortable for two or three travelers.

The Voyager comes with a pillow, pillowcase, sheet, and sleeping bag for each of the four passengers, as well as a towel. The Voyager does not have a bathroom or shower, so you won’t have to worry about emptying a toilet cassette, but you will need to make sure you camp somewhere that provides bathrooms.

Britz Voyager

The Voyager is 2.8 meters tall on the outside (so be aware of your clearance in parking garages and other places with low clearances). Inside, the ceiling in the main area of the campervan is 2.1 meters off the floor, so unless you’re over 6 feet 10 inches tall, you won’t have to worry about bumping your head when you step into the back of the campervan. There is of course less headroom when the loft area has been set up as a sleeping area.

In addition to the table inside, a second table can be set up outside along the van’s sliding door. Sit here to enjoy even more of the outdoors. You can rent camp chairs (and other extras) from Britz if you don’t have your own. Campervan vehicles come from different years, so you might end up with a van with dated floors or worn upholstery. Nevertheless, Britz seems to keep the important stuff, like kitchenware, looking clean and modern.

If you are starting or ending your journey in Melbourne, it is important to note that the pick up location in Melbourne is not near the airport or Central Business District. The Britz branch in Melbourne office opens at 7:30 a.m. from September through April and at 10 a.m. from May through August. The branch closes at 4 p.m. but all vehicles must be picked up or returned by 3:30 p.m. If you are arriving in Melbourne by plane, you will need to make your own transportation between the airport and the branch office during the appropriate hours. By taxi, it is a $50 – $65 ride from the airport to the branch office. As a tip, avoid taking the City Link Tollway or your cab driver may charge you an extra $12 for the tolls (all prices in Australian dollars).

Excellent experience, would highly recommend.

From pick up to to drop off our experience with Britz and our Venturer Camper-van was excellent. Having never driven a vehicle of this size we were initially nervous but soon got used to it. The support we received, the THL app and videos all helped us along the way. We called the helpline on one occasion due to an engine management light coming on, they responded quickly, knew where we were and confidently allayed any concerns we had. We purchased the return pack, making drop off fast and efficient We drove approximately 5500 km and experienced no issues with the van . Unlike a travelling companion who had nothing but problems with Happy Camper, who I would avoid at all costs. I would definitely recommend Britz

Overall pretty good experience. I'll say you should explore their website fully and watch all the videos and write down any questions you have. When we picked up the vehicle our check-out was little more than a quick walkaround, so don't expect a thorough explanation of features unless you ask for it. The condition of the vehicle was good but it started raining on day 1 and it turned out the wipers were dangerously worn. We called in for another issue and were directed to a service center where we were told they "don't do mechanical work" and so couldn't help us with the wipers. I paid out of pocket for one wiper at a service station but the guy working there had never seen wiper arms like ours and struggled for a long time to get the old one off and the new one on. I couldn't have done it without him. I kept the receipt and was credited at the end. The heavy rain the first night somehow flooded the storage area with the folding chairs. When we set off again we ended up with water all over the floor of the RV. The service center was somewhat baffled so the guy put masking tape around the seal where it looked compromised. That seemed to do the trick for the rest of our trip. We bought the extra insurance and I'm really glad we did. One driver had an incident that scuffed the side of the RV and tweaked the side entry door. As promised we were able to turn in the RV with no penalty. I definitely would not recommend paying the extra money for their express drop-off. If you don't take care of it sooner there's a nearby BP where you can fill up on diesel, change the gas bottle and use the dump station. (Not sure if they have a water hose though.)

We were a little nervy booking a camper van for 3.5 weeks after reading some reviews. The ‘least worst’ one we felt was Britz. Now we’ve done the trip, it was superb. The campervan was perfect and the Britz staff were extremely helpful - contrary to a lot of what I read beforehand on reviews. A big shout out to Ingrid for some help on the roadside during our trip, as well as Samantha in the Auckland office during drop off. They were both so friendly and lovely to deal with. I would highly recommend booking well in advance to avoid having less choice before your trip. Also purchase the more premium insurance to give yourself peace of mind on the NZ roads.

The campervan was dirty, smelly on the inside and full of cobwebs on the outside. The bedding had stains as did the seats. Blurgh.

Would have been great but there were just too many "little things" that contributed to making this not 100% awesome. The collection of the vehicle took longer than booking in at an airport! And then when we did get rushed out to the vehicle we didn't really get a chance to have a good look / sign off some of the condition of it. Firstly - I thought a clean vehicle would have gone a long way to starting off well - but the outside was dirty and in need of a decent clean down. The inside was the same and at the first opportunity, I bought cleaning products and wiped the inside of the camper until it felt clean enough to start our holiday in. After a couple of days travel, the lining on the roof of the luten above the drivers/passengers seating fell down draping over the bed - my 11yr old HATED having to be in there. We tried contacting Britz but had no reply whatsoever, so we emailed them photos of it so we would have it as proof. The toilet was smelly on pick up also. At some stage one of the screws in the pantry area came out so we had to go around re-screwing in all of the other loose ones also. When we first used the canvas awning -- we pulled it out and a whole lot of old water rained down from out of it - and the awning looked revolting - very mouldy and black/discoloured.... pretty grosse to be fair. The mattresses were quite uncomfortable - I am used to camping anywhere and never usually have any backpain, but i did get a few aches during this trip because of that mattress. So....that was the not so great points. We did have a lovely time away however- great to just get out and see our country just hubby, myself and our 2 x kids. The van was extremely economical when it came to filling up with gas! So it wasn't all doom and gloom. Getting back to the depot and giving feedback to the team felt like it was falling on deaf ears, they didn't seem like they cared that there were some "issues" to address.

britz voyager 4 berth review

Picked up a Britz 4 berth Voyager from Christchurch and spent 3 weeks traveling the south island, and dropped it off at Queenstown. It was our first campervan trip and we absolutely loved it. Pick up and drop off was easy and everything about the van was great. Purchasing the express package made drop off an absolute breeze. Did literally nothing apart from give the keys back. Cannot wait to book another campervan again!

Best 4 berth motorhome 2024

If you're looking for the best four berth motorhome, our expert roundup is sure to help

By Peter Baber Published: October 5, 2023

Best 4 berth motorhome

If you are shopping for the best 4 berth motorhome, there is a huge selection of makes, models and layouts for you to choose from. The Practical Motorhome Awards 2024 are here to help you narrow down your search.

While a family ‘van may have four, five or six berths, a four berth can be a great choice for couples who are looking for a bit of extra space when they tour, while also getting the flexibility of having room for guests.

Models from some of best motorhome brands have made it onto our best four berth motorhome shortlist, including ‘vans from Swift , Rapido, Benimar and more. We also pick out our other top recommendations from recent years, including the four berth motorhomes we shortlisted last year.

Whatever type of motorhome vehicle class you’re shopping for, whether you want something compact and easy to manoeuvre, or the ultimate in luxury and spaciousness, there’s a ‘van on this list that could be ideal for you.

This year, we’ve picked out the Swift Voyager 494 as the best four berth motorhome on the market, a ‘van which impressed us for the spacious layout it provides.

The winner of the best 4 berth motorhome is:

Swift Voyager 494

Swift Voyager 494

  • Price: £68,995
  • MTPLM: 3500kg
  • MiRO: 3088kg
  • Payload: 412kg
  • Length: 7.54m
  • Width: 2.37m

Reasons to buy:

  • A four-berth that still feels right for just the two of you too

Reasons to avoid:

  • You don’t get a washroom spread across the middle

Our whole team were big fans of Swift’s Voyager 5 range when it was launched for 2023, so much so that the Swift Voyager 584  took the trophy for best low-profile motorhome in our Awards last year.

So it will come as no surprise to see one of the Cottingham-based company’s all-new 4-series Voyagers picking up another gong this year. The Ford Transit-based 4-series models take all that’s great about the Voyager 5 line-up and add the practicality of an overcab bed in the Luton – perfect for additional sleeping or even extra storage space.

Here, we’ve gone for the accommodating island-bed floorplan of the four-berth 494 model: it also has a very spacious washroom and side kitchen for plenty of comfort on tour. Add to that the fact that all Voyagers now get a host of extra kit – including external BBQ and shower points, and concertina cab blinds – and have a price tag that’s great value for money, and it’s clear Swift has another winner on its hands.

It’s not the only model from the Voyager 4 series to win an Award either – the 475 was picked out as the best family motorhome by our judging panel too.

Shortlisted for the best 4 berth motorhome are:

Rapido 606f.

  • Price: £74,800
  • Payload: TBC
  • Length: 6.69m
  • Width: 2.35m
  • Another family-friendly layout where you won’t get on each other’s toes.
  • Maybe not for you if you don’t like drop-down beds.

The 606F allows Rapido to offer in its popular 6F low-profile range a motorhome layout that is becoming increasingly popular, not least because in this case it allows you to accommodate four people in just 6.69m of length, and yet still have a perfectly spacious lounge in the daytime with settees that face each other in a friendly way. It does this by virtue of having a drop-down bed (operated from a button on the table leg) which comes down above the second double bed you make up from the table itself and the settees.

That then leaves space for a spacious side kitchen with a 156-litre AES fridge (and yes, even an oven as an option), a washroom that stretches right across the back of the van, and behind it a huge cupboard space with access to the garage underneath.

The whole 6F range has been given an upgrade this season, too, with a new skyview window that is even heated!

Pilote Atlas 696G

Pilote Atlas 696G

  • Price: £85,000
  • Width: 2.2m
  • A rugged van that will take you places in comfort
  • If you like more feminine interiors, this isn’t for you

The 696G was the first model to be launched in Pilote’s new Atlas range , based on a Ford Transit Trail with a limited-slip differential chassis – effectively one step down from being four-wheel drive, so ideal for those harder-to-reach places.

It is 7m long, and because it includes a space-saving transverse bed at the back (with internal access to the cavernous garage underneath that bed), there’s room for a surprisingly large parallel-settee lounge up front. That lounge could easily accommodate more people than the ‘van’s four sleeping berths. What’s more, there’s a comfortable drop-down bed over the lounge, too.

It certainly looks the part too, with funky decals on the outside echoing the van’s luton and a very masculine black interior.

Benimar Mileo 282

  • Length: 7.39m
  • Width: 2.30m
  • You get what it says on the tin
  • Not for you if your family likes to stick together

Benimar is completing its flagship Fiat-based range for the 2024 season. Although precise details were still sketchy as we were putting together these awards, the 282 – one of four models that are continuing into the new season – has always been one of our favourites.

It’s ideal as a four-berth motorhome, as it has both a front dinette and a spacious rear lounge – so plenty of room for the four of you to stretch out in without treading on each other’s toes. There’s great storage too, with a garage at the back that is accessible from both the side and the back. There’s a spacious kitchen too, and a washroom you could squeeze two people into even if it is a side washroom. Yet the whole thing comes in under seven and a half metres.

These are the 4 berth motorhomes we shortlisted at the last year’s Awards:

Bürstner eliseo c644.

  • Price: £62,795
  • Payload: 531kg
  • MiRO: 2969kg
  • Length: 6.36m
  • Width: 2.08m

Reason to buy:

  • A real sense of space inside a van conversion, great garage

Reason to avoid:

  • Not the friendliest layout for seating en route

The 644 layout, with a drop-down bed over a rear lounge, has been included in Bürstner’s low-profile Lyseo TD Harmony Line range for some seasons now. (It was initially designed as a shortened version of the “three room” 744). It made its first appearance in a van conversion as the Eliseo C644, a 6.36m-long model in Bürstner’s most upmarket van conversion range that we picked out as the best 4 berth motorhome last year.

The kitchen and rear of the 'van

The drop-down bed is easily accessible by a ladder from the kitchen, and there is still room for two more to sleep “downstairs” in the bed made up from the lounge. There is still room for a wardrobe, a decent-size side kitchen, a Vario washroom with a swinging partition, and best of all a half height “garage” behind the back seat that is still high enough to take a bicycle.

Adria Supersonic 780DC

The Adria Supersonic 780DC

  • Price: £156,690
  • MTPLM: 4500kg
  • MiRO: 3520kg
  • Payload: 980kg
  • Length: 7.8m
  • Width: 2.32m
  • Great spec throughout
  • Dark interior theme, no oven or microwave

A modern interior and an excellent spec make this A-class a highly appealing four-berth motorhome. It’s the first time Adria has launched a Mercedes-based range in over 10 years, and the results are impressive.

Inside, a double floor makes it flat throughout, while two parallel settees sit on either side of a rotating table in an interior that has a dark theme, due to the grey floors and dark wood finish.

The side wall kitchen doesn’t boast the most workspace, but what there is has been usefully optimised. As a Continental ‘van, there is no oven or microwave fitted, but a three-burner gas hob and a grill are provided, as is a Dometic two-way opening fridge.

We’re huge fans of the rear bedroom, where you can set up either the daybed or bed at the flick of a switch. It’s a relaxing space, with the option of a TV and the inclusion of nearby USB ports. The other bed is a comfortable dropdown that sits above the cab.

The rear garage, the inclusion of four large drawers and two good overhead lockers in the kitchen are just some of the storage options provided.

Rapido 854F

The Rapido 854F

  • Length: 6.7m
  • Family or group friendly layout

Many British motorcaravanners love a rear-lounge motorhome layout . You can blame it on our unpredictable weather, perhaps, but we like to have somewhere we can all gather together when the rain has put paid to any hopes we had of going outside. Many continental manufacturers have latched on to this, including Rapido, which brought out this model last season partly to accommodate this demand. Only it wasn’t quite a rear lounge: instead the offside was one long chaise-longue.

The lounge in the Rapido 854F

This has now been replaced with a genuine and more comfortable bench seat that only encourages social gathering. Elsewhere you still get the same van, with a spacious kitchen and Duo-Space washroom with a swivelling partition up front. This year you also get a handy little shelf behind the passenger seat.

Weinsberg X-Cursion Van 500 LT

The Weinsberg X-Cursion Van 500 LT

  • Price: £71,660
  • MTPLM: 2800kg
  • Payload: 140kg
  • Length: 5.88m
  • Width: 2.16m
  • A huge amount of features for a relatively short van, external access to wardrobe.

The internal steps might annoy some, payload could be an issue

Knaus Tabbert is one of many companies who has taken up closer ties with Volkswagen in the wake of Fiat’s much-publicised supply chain issues. One of the earliest results is this new van, based on a Transporter 6.1 and launched at Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf this year. With a habitation door unusually far back in the vehicle, it includes a very comfortable front lounge with parallel seating you have to step down into from both the rear and the cab.

An optional bed that you pull down from above the cab makes it a four-berth. Alongside a spacious washroom, the nearside rear corner includes a large wardrobe with collapsible shelves and an exterior door. You don’t often find that in a van this size.

Dethleffs Just Go T6815 EB

  • MIRO: 2969kg
  • Length: 6.99m
  • Width: 2.33m
  • Comfy layout with good storage and a washroom partition that isn’t too heavy
  • Kitchen is a bit basic

The Just Go range is a special edition Ford Transit-based range brought to offer a sort-of entry level range, with, unusually for a German motorhome, only one options pack you can add to it. This fixed single beds model is the shortest in the range at 6.69m. But it still manages to include a decent size kitchen, a comfortable front lounge, a garage under the beds that is just about large enough for a bike, and a Vario washroom with a swing partition that is lighter than most and with better catches.

Although a two-berth as standard, you can make a third bed from the dinette and a drop-down bed over this is an option.

We also recommend the following 4 berth motorhomes from recent years…

Based on the Mercedes Sprinter, this ‘van has a large rear island bed and a drop-down double over the lounge area. The central kitchen is well-equipped and makes an efficient use of space, and the washroom, across the centre of the ‘van, should be plenty large enough.

Dreamer Living (2020)

  • Price: £53,000
  • MTPLM: 3599kg
  • Length: 6.35m
  • Width: 2.05m

Dreamer, a sub-brand of Rapido, has brought to the UK market an impressive van conversion, based on a Fiat Ducato. It’s an impressive offering, with a spacious rear lounge, midships kitchen and washroom, and a front dinette.

The washroom in particular has some clever design – a system called Modul’Space – which gives both a generous wardrobe and ample space for showering.

This 4 berth motorhome has both a large double bed that can be made up from that rear lounge, and a comfortable drop-down double above the front dinette. Quite a feat in such a compact motorhome. As such, it’s no surprise that this ‘van scooped the Best Rear-Lounge Model award in our 2020 Motorhome of the Year Awards.

  • Price: £160,390
  • MTPLM: 7200kg
  • Length: 9.27m
  • Width: 2.4m

If you’re looking for ultimate luxury and have plenty of cash, this highly polished motorhome could be for you. Built by German manufacturer Niesmann+Bischoff, known for their high-quality finishes, this A-class has an impressive spec level and an enormous payload.

This is more of a luxury apartment on wheels, albeit with a standard enough rear-twin-beds layout and a drop-sown double over the cab providing the four berths. There’s also a very generous garage, and plenty of payload for you to make use of it with extra kit.

The washroom is also generously-sized, complete with an upgraded toilet with holding tank, a huge shower compartment, and the ability to create a full-width washroom with space for dressing. These are just some of the high-end aspects of this motorhome.

BUY IF… You want the ultimate in luxury and are comfortable driving a large vehicle.

Bailey Advance 76-2T (2020)

  • Price: £47,999
  • Travel seats: 2
  • MTPLM : 3500kg
  • Length: 7.57m
  • Width: 2.5m

As part of Bailey’s entry-level Advance range, this motorhome is based on a Peugeot Boxer and boasts an end washroom, fixed-single-beds layout that also appears in the mid-market Alliance range.

In terms of kit, for an entry-level ‘van it is pretty impressive given the price tag, and both storage and payload are practical. It would certainly make a very comfortable motorhome for a couple going on tour, and can easily accommodate additional overnight guests, but they’ll have to make their own way to the destination, as there are only 2 belted travel seats.

BUY IF… You’ll be taking occasional overnight guests and want a spacious motorhome for touring as a couple.

PROs: Great fixed beds Sideboard with TV sockets

CONs: Lack of storage for dry foods in the kitchen

Chausson 520 (2020)

Chausson 520

  • Price: £49,910
  • Length: 5.99

This low-profile offering from Chausson scooped our Best Compact Motorhome award at the 2020 Motorhome of the Year Awards. It has taken the hugely popular Maxi Lounge layout and put it into a compact, easy to manoeuvre, sub-6m ‘van.

It offers a layout that feels spacious, and includes a comfortable lounge, a luxurious washroom, a comfortable fixed bed and some thoughtful design touches. The only thing perhaps missing is the large garage that the three other Maxi Lounge models boast.

BUY IF… You’re looking for a spacious feel in a sub-6m ‘van.

PROs: Clever use of space in a sub-6m’van High-spec washroom

Storage is less plentiful than other ‘vans in the range

Read our review of the Chausson 520 to see why the 4 berth was so popular with our Motorhome of the Year Awards 2020 judges.

Mobilvetta Kea P65 (2020)

Mobilvetta Kea P65 (2020)

  • Price: £69,996
  • Length: 7.38m

The combination of continental good looks and UK-friendly touches make this an attractive proposition for those looking for a comfortable 4 berth motorhome. This particular model has twin single beds at the rear, an L-shaped kitchen and a fairly well-equipped offside washroom.

While there’s plenty of storage lockers and a rear garage (complete with mains socket and lighting), you’ll need to be very careful to stick within the 270kg payload.

This is a highly versatile motorhome, with attractive styling and a more powerful 160bhp engine that is a definite bonus.

BUY IF… You’re looking for an attractive coachbuilt with a modern and stylish feel.

Auto-Trail Adventure 65 (2020)

Auto-Trail Adventure 65 (2020)

  • Price: £58,895
  • Width: 2.27m

This innovative campervan took the Best Rising Roof Camper award in our 2020 Motorhome of the Year Awards, and for good reason.

Based on the Fiat Ducato, this ‘van has a make-up bed in the rear as well as the roof bed above the front lounge, which makes this a truly versatile camper.

That upper bed has a sprung mattress, reading lights and USB sockets, and it can be sealed off if you want to send the kids to bed early without them being disturbed while you relax in the rear lounge.

The ‘van also has a compact kitchen, which benefits from an underslung gas tank to make the most of potential storage space.

BUY IF… You’re looking for a rising-roof campervan that would suit a young family.

PROs: Excellent rising roof Modern washroom

CONs: Kitchen is a little tight

See more about this award-winning ‘van in our review of the Auto-Trail Adventure 65 .

Bürstner Lyseo 690 G (2020)

Bürstner Lyseo 2020

  • Price: £72,125
  • MTPLM: 3880kg

Based on the Mercedes Sprinter, the 660 model has a rear French bed and a corner washroom, while the 690 G that we have reviewed has rear fixed single beds. With only 2 travel seats, this may not make a great family ‘van, but it’s great for couples that will have occasional visitors.

Upmarket touches include rear-wheel drive, an elegant cocktail cabinet and a 142-litre slimline fridge. If you don’t go for the optional drop-down double above the lounge, you also benefit from a large rooflight as well as the overcab sunroof.

BUY IF… You’re a couple that will have the occasional visitors, but want an elegant and comfortable ‘van.

PROs: Elegant and comfortable Good washroom for this layout

CONs: Storage limited if travelling with more than two people

Adria Matrix Axess 520 ST (2020)

  • Price: £56,865
  • Length: 5.97m
  • Width: 2.3m

For a sub-6m motorhome, the Matrix has great space-saving design details, such as the drop-down double bed and the configuration of the 3-burner hob and sink that still allows plenty of workspace.

Even the washroom has been impeccably designed, with a bench toilet, fold-down sink and storage for the ladder for the bed, which doubles as a drying rack.

There are plenty of option packs available to make this your dream motorhome, but this will drive up the price.

BUY IF… You’re looking for top-drawer build quality and clever design in a compact ‘van.

PROs: For a compact motorhome, it’s very spacious Drop-down bed saves a lot of space Cleverly designed washroom

CONs: All those option packs could be costly Could do with more kit in the kitchen

Our full review of the Matrix Axess 520 ST details more of this motorhome’s great design.

How we choose the best four berth motorhomes

When we’re compiling the ‘vans that make it onto our list, we consider factors such as the value it offers, the space it provides, the ease of putting the extra beds together and more.

Since Practical Motorhome launched in 2001, we’ve been regularly putting ‘vans to the test. Many of these are in our motorhome reviews section. We make sure every test is fair, highlighting the pros and cons of each one. You can find out more about our testing process on our About Us page.

As well as this, our Owner Satisfaction Survey offers us further insight, as our readers let us know how they’ve got on when buying a ‘van.

Pooling this together puts us in a strong position to draw up our shortlist.

In our best 4 berth motorhome guide, we’ll highlight what it is that’s made each ‘van worthy of being included in our list.

If you don’t need all four berths of these models, and think a two berth motorhome could suit your touring style better, we’ve also rounded up 10 of the best 2 berth motorhomes to help kick-start your research.

Campervans more your thing? There’s also a round-up of the best campervans  to take a look at.

We have just completed our first ever Camper van experience with a Britz 2 berth Venturer. Hired from the Queenstown branch we went through the Catlins area for 6 days and had an enjoyable experience. The van was very clean and well supplied with everything that we needed. The booking, collection/ returning of the van was seamless and staff were very helpful and answered questions that we asked. We found the App very useful when we needed to know anything specific. We stayed mainly in camping grounds so used their facilities- toilet and shower but used the toilet during the night to urinate and emptied at dump stations. The outside barbecue was a bit hard to ligt but efficient for what we needed. Found the bed comfortable and we were warm and dry inside. We would definitely try again and would use a Britz camper van without question.

My wife and I booked a camper van March 2020 with Britz New Zealand. Unfortunately Covid lockdown hit week before we were to pick up the van. We contacted Britz and they were excellent immediately giving us 50% refund and 50% credit. With continuing lockdown on travel Britz on request have refunded us the other 50%. Can’t ask anymore really and when things open up will look forward to booking with Britz again. Everyone we dealt with professional and pleasant. Colin and Edel Murphy

We booked a 2 week holiday in the South Island. From the get go at the Chch branch it took ages to be attended to and they were very quick to get us out after a long wait. We found that the 6 berth was very tired inside and not very clean. The shovel and brush was disgusting, bedding, pillows and tea towels stunk. The sinks kept blocking and despite taking it into the branch to be looked at, the problem continued. All appliances were old and dusty and the cutlery tray was in tatters. Lots of loose screws in the cupboards and kitchen sink. For the price you pay I would have expected this to be of a better standard. I would not recommend Britz to anyone sadly.

I was part of a group of 7, who hired 3 campervans, one a Mercedes sprinter ( Kea 660), the next a Mercedes sprinter van, and the third a Toyota Hi- ace. The overall experience of the campers was good, the pickup and return efficient and helpful. The overall cost was astonishingly reasonable. The vans were all great to drive. However all vans had problems, which should have been highlighted by the most rudimentary checklist, at preparation for hand over to the next client. On the Mercedes/Kea 660 there were 2 potentially dangerous faults with the operation of the vehicle. (1) When the vehicle brakes were applied, the reversing lights came on, when the gear selector was put in reverse, the brake light was on..(2) The O ring on the male gas regulator connection to the gas bottle was so shredded, it looked like an end of a frayed nylon rope. The bed which pulls down from the roof ( a really good design) wouldn't come down, then jammed and wouldn't go up...the problem was a mounting screw of one the bed elevating tracks that was half unscrewed, trying to join the 3 screws missing below it. The 2nd Mercedes van either had an electrical short, or a defective house battery, causing it to very rapidly lose its charge. We were treated to frequent running of the motor, to enable use of any electrical appliance, water pump, fridge,lights...etc. The Toyota had no power in the house battery, and non functional gas. On ringing the help line, we were told it shouldn't have been used for freedom camping....despite having a self contained certificate on the back window...The house battery eventually charged up. The gas bottle was found to be full, but it took the help of a gas specialist to connect the mixer to the bottle with great difficulty, which despite the full bottle, gave very weak burn at the stove. All these campers are well designed, and if detailed properly will give you a great holiday, at an amazing fee. Do some checks first before you head off.

We had a great time but the Britz experience was poor. During the booking process they were very slow at responding to emails. Again very slow just prior to departure. We picked our motor homes up from Christchurch. Staff were only interested in giving us a very quick overview of the motor home and expected us to do our own research on their ap. There were 3 motor homes going out together. One had a smelly toilet. Another was missing the rubber gloves for use at dump station and all 3 had minor defects which should have been dealt with in between hires. The GPS’s were useless - we used our phones. Britz and Maui are basically the same company. I cannot recommend using them.

Hired a camper during their Covid Campaign and wasted three days of my life with their book system crashing. On arrival our van was disappointing as had scratches and dents, waste water was full, diesel low and needed everything done before we left. Bought food and drove all day to find fridge not turned on and mouse poo under the drawers. There was no snow chins as requested and a number of issues with all the blind attachments falling off.  The loft bed was almost unbearable with a stupid metal bar through the middle which cut into your back as the inch thick mattress did not cover it.  A red dash light had been on since we collected the campervan and when we finally found out what it was it was a major fault and we had been driving an unsafe vehicle. We lost a day of travel stuck on the side of the road, with no one bothering to call us back as the call centre in Auckland was not receiving transferred calls after their fire - a comedy of errors but frustrating when you have made more than 12 phone calls. So badly handled we spent 24 hours waiting on call backs each time and no one knew what was happening.  Worst of all the rude man at the campsite involved in the promo would not swap our Britz campervan even when they had spares claiming Britz were responsible for our dilemma and not his problem.  Britz sent us on wild goose chases around town to a car rental place that did not exist or had no rentals available and suggested we pay for another hire car.  Worst 24 hours of my life and lost gear transferring luggage in the rain that was left in the previous camper.

Actually from Christchurch not Auckland. Campervan had not been thoroughly cleaned as we found muesli bars and cigarette butt on the first night. the tomtom reverse camera and nat sav were not plugged in or set up for us to use not surprising therefore that it did not work.Ringing customer support and they had no idea what was wrong...We were provided with the wrong cushions to set up the beds so had to wait until arriving in Queenstown to have the appropriate cushions. beds were uncomfortable in consequence. The buttons on the gas cooker would not stay locked and we found them continually turning on. The smaller bed pieces did not pull out completely so we could not use the legs to hold them into place . None of the USB plugs worked so charging of devices could only be done under full power via plugs No charging when not in a campground. The windscreen cleaner fluid was empty , something that was obviously not checked by Britz. The instruction booklet did not cover how to make up the beds for the campervan we had so without the correct instructions and wrong cushions it was a disaster. There was the end of a screw poking out from the fridge by the back bed and one of our party was harmed by this. The fridge continually blew freezing air out the top and while the fridge seemed to keep things cool it did not keep them cold leading to items perishing quickly. Several seatbelts were badly twisted and not able to be fixed it looked as though they had put it in the wrong way round this was not only uncomfortable but potentially dangerous. Was surprised for a 4 star company to expect us to change duvet covers ourselves and not just give us 3 new sets. one duvet replacement had a hole and I had to go back to get it changed. Once more surprised I was expected to take the cover off and replace with another one. also several times between 4 and 5 pm no one answered the phones which lead to the delay of a day in getting things "fixed" (not all) in Queenstown. this of course mean

We had numerous faults with our van. The oil light kept on coming on. Was told to just keep driving. The diesel heater did not work. No arm rest on drivers seat. Broken. Slates on bed broken. Hinge on cupboard broken. Cigatette lighter no connected so unable to charge phone. Curtains need to be replaced. Awning covered in mould and full of water when opened. We paid alot of money to hire the van and we expected it to be in better condition. On returning to van we informed the customer service of our complaints but was disappointed in their response. It was like oh well who cares.

I spent quite a bit of time researching companies to hire a camper to take my family on a much needed holiday (cost wasn't an issue, as I wanted a quality camper). I made a special trip to view the camper and discuss the model which we required, and also discussed with staff the need for a reasonably clean camper as one of the family has severe issues with dust. It was a 21 day hire. Wasn't supplied with model requested. On closer inspection whilst packing up the camper at home, we realised it was absolutely disgustingly filthy. Cutlery dirty, fridge dirty, black mould in shower and toilet, and camper smelt revolting. The toilet waste was full which we realised after we left, and no blue toilet liquid was supplied. I had to clean the toilet waste out 3 times because it was left full and stunk to high heaven. Then when I pulled out the awning it was covered in black mould and stunk as well and mouldy water was dripping off it. Obviously this van had not been cleaned and checked over. The bedding and mattresses were so manky we didn't use the bedding, and had to air the camper out prior to use. The reversing camera didn’t work. Very disappointed, especially as we were promised the earth. When I returned the camper, the staff did not seem to care about the issues, and their arrogant attitude was the same as the van - STINK. Also while I was returning the camper, the customer in front of me was complaining of very similar issues. Do not recommend at all.

Our family were looking forward to seeing NZ and supporting local operators while on our Xmas break. We saw our beautiful country and met some lovely people. However, our experience with Britz was very disappointing from start to finish. The vans were not stocked properly, were dirty, in bad repair and smelt. We traveled with two other families and they had their own issues also. 1. Red engine warning light came on not long into trip stating engine oil overfill. After several conversations with Britz they stated it was fine to keep driving resulting in oil splattered over the front of van. 2. Had to wash our linen as in particular the pillow cases were dirty and smelt. 3. Bathroom smelt foul and we didn't use it. 4. Jug was broken and stove igniter didn't work. 5. Upstairs bed smelt like armpits (my poor kids). 6. Handbrake wouldn't unlock and kept alarming. 7. Main door broke and had to tie string to keep the fly screen attached. 8. Table area cushions smelt like stale urine. 9. Main bedding was a jigsaw of cushions and not comfortable. 10. Curtains to top compartment were dirty and falling off the rails. 11. The van rocked with the slightest movement when stationary. 12. Mold growing in the corners of the van. We had conversations throughout our trip with campground operators and they shared their customers experiences with Britz, Maui, Mighty etc and the disappointing state the vans are often in (having to empty black and grey water from newly picked up vans). Their check in process was shambolic. The crew literally taking stuff out of one van and putting into another while you were waiting. There didn't seem to be any checklist of items that each van should have. One of our traveling families had to go back to the depot three time

Hired a Ventura Plus for 11 nights. While we managed to enjoy our trip, certain aspects of the van were terrible. The wells under the loo were full of someone else's pee which then leaked into the shower & out underneath onto the floor- disgusting! My partner had to clean it up, not great. The drains were not working properly so unable to use the shower after it was cleaned. We were told to take the van to a garage somewhere? & get air blown thru. Went back to Chch 2 days early & complained, tempted to leave it then but would have had to pay the 2 days so they blew air thru & we took it away. No difference to the pipes. We were offered $43 compensation for the toilet - they charge $125 if clients take a van back without emptying it. Anyway, they did give us a discount to cover the cost of 6 nights in camps as we could not freedom camp due to no shower. We are experienced motorhomers, dread to think how newbies would cope as not much in the way of instruction was given. BTW, the bed was so hard we had to buy underlays. Mechanically very good. Heating great. Left some Commando hooks for future hirers as there was nowhere to hang anything. Dirt under edge of fridge including cat biscuits. Staff are obviously well trained to deal with disgruntled clients & the complaint system is a fob-off, as no one comes to help, they tell you what to do. This is a sad state of affairs when tourists come here & strike these problems. Shame on you THL, we did this trip to support your hire company due to the downturn in the tourist industry.

After reading many great reviews our experience was pretty average, had a few issues with the motorhome provided which we ran through with a more than helpful gentleman upon our return, He insisted that Britz would like to make it up to us (how I don’t know) and said the manger would email us Monday and if we havnt heard anything by then to contact him, I unfortunately didn’t take his name, after reaching out to their customer care email I pretty much got a reply saying no one earlier had any issues with the vechicle, so I guess they thought we were lying :( obviously of course no one previous would have had the issues as they surely wouldn’t hire it to us if it had.

My partner & I paid a fair bit of money to reserve one of the newer model 4 berths as they are well laid out & we were traveling with a lot of luggage, when we arrived we were just given a 6 berth campervan . We weren't told that it was different to the one we had paid for, only when we queried it did they tell us. The 6 berth was not a good layout at all, no head room in either of the 2 main beds, harder to maneuver & probably less economical than the one we booked. Its a term in the contract that they can substitute another van of comparable or bigger size but this was definitely considerable a downgrade for us when you compare the 2 models. And then we set off then and soon discovered the elecric windows didn't work and the passenger side door didn't lock. When we got to the final depot to drop off the van, we listened to 3 people in the queue in front of us make similar compliants. Seems like they advertise these newer model camparvans to get your money then give you 2nd rate vans. Pretty dishonest and bordering on fraudulent practice if you ask me. All customer service interaction we had was poor, from check in, support hotline to drop off. We received no apology when we informed them of the faults with the van and I wonder if they even logged them properly and attempted to fix them before hiring it back out. Also they try and sell you the express drop off package when you check in. They told us to fill up the gas bottle would be $80, we decided against it and when we came the to fill it up at the end it came to $13, yet another lie we were told. Please think twice before hiring a Britz, Mighty & M

We had a wonderful trip to New Zealand, but our experience with our Maui Britz rental RV wasn't good at all. There were two of us, and we opted for the "smaller" motor, which is meant to accommodate 4 comfortably (I can't imagine having four people in there, but I guess it's technically possible). We opted for with Maui brand, because we were told they were newer models, and quite frankly I didn't want to be stuck broken down on the side of the road with an older model. WELL, we don't feel like we got what we paid for AT ALL when it comes to quality or service. The service at pickup and drop off was terrible. The rep who was supposed to give us detailed explanations of how to use everything in the RV acted rushed, like she had better places to be. At one point, she actually SAID "I don't have time to show you that!" The RV was well equipped and relatively comfortable (the bed was actually great), but it was extremely noisy with pots and pans rattling around - we had to put paper towels between them all to reduce the annoying noise; the microwave mount was broken, so the oven kept sliding out and making horrible ratting noises as we drove - for the last two days we were afraid it was going to come crashing onto the floor at may times. The roof hatch flap was broken, so we couldn't open it for air ventilation, and somewhere on the roof there was a leak, so when it rained (which is did a lot while we were there), water would come with a heavy flow down onto the counter and got our bed wet - we had to resort to keeping towels up on the counter the whole time. And the worst part was we had a dead house battery the first time we tried to freedom camp without power hookup - we called the help line, and they told us we had to take it to a service center four hours out of our way the next day - which of course burned an entire day of our trip for us. I just think for the cost the product and service should have been much better, and I cannot recommend it.

We found that the toilet cassette and waste water had not been emptied. Overall not a bad experience after a bad start I signed there paperwork which stated they had been. When empty the toilet I was confided the vehicle had been stood for some time with it full the waste water could not be emptied because the hose had been crushed because it had a hose clip on it blocking it. I was able to repair this and empty the tank Beside this there were the usual problems which many companies have curtains falling of there track and cupboards and drawers opening will driving gorilla tape resolved this they also misplace the keys when picking up causing a delay

A bigger-than-expected van that gave us plenty of space to move around in comfort. It contained all the basics that enabled us to do a mixture of paid sites and Freedom camping. The support was good (we had a problem with a broken outer locker door but it was quickly fixed for us). We had an amazing trip with the knowledge that we carried our 'house' with us and could adapt our plans as we wanted, depending on where we ended up.

The camper that I in the end received was good but the hassle to get to that point wasn't great. However quite disappointed about the initial service and what I would call false advertising. I had spent significant time researching the specs of the campervan and the existence of a rear vision camera was important to me as I was travelling on my own. Unfortunately the van that I received didn't seem to have a working rear vision camera and when I called the helpline about this I was directed to return back to Christchurch. When I asked about a garage closer to Ashburton or Geraldine I was instead offered a garage in Blenheim (talk about a geographically challenged helpline, which was based in AKL, not overseas). After that I was told that the cameras were so specialised that I had to return to the Christchurch base to get it fixed. Even though I asked what that would mean for me if it couldn't be fixed as it would be late afternoon on my return to Christchurch I couldn't get an answer and I was refused my request to speak with someone else who might be able to answer this question. On my arrival back in Christchurch I was told that "Britz doesn't guarantee rear vision cameras" - well and good but then don't advertise the campervan to have one or make it clear that not every camper of one type may have one. On top of everything it turned out that there was nothing wrong with the camera of the van as it didn't have one! Shouldn't Britz have this info for their vans on tap instead of sending me back to get a non-existent camera fixed?? To be fair they offered to fix a camera onto the van and once they didn't manage this upgraded me to a newer version of the chosen camper with a working rear vision camera (though don't expect a great picture like you get in most cars now, it was a very grainy dark view which was hard to make out). Just really disappointed about having lost a whole day of travel and having had to pay for that day on top of it.

My wife and I rented a campervan from Britz for a week and in that week managed to see a lot of the South Island. It wasn't nearly long enough but we had a great time. I'd bought a DOC pass but, after we stayed at a Top 10 campsite for our first night, we decided that we would use them, if possible, for the rest of the trip. As it turned out there was a Top 10 site everywhere we'd decided to go on our trip so that worked out pretty well for us. Probably helped by being early in the season as the only one we prebooked was the first one. We both loved the experience and the truly spectacular country we drove through.

Our campervan was clean and worked great. Would be 10 out of 10 except for their heavy handed insurance tactics.

We have rented an RV before, in Alaska, so we have a bit of comparison. We recently rented a 6 berth Britz for 2 weeks in NZ in the winter. It had 180k km on it. There were a number of issues. In the big picture, we were able to have a great vacation, and having a campervan allowed us to do this. Pros: Everybody we dealt with was professional. Interior looked nice/clean. Well stocked, including 2 warm blankets per person and an electric heater. Here are the issues: (1) Shocks/suspension were old/worn. A lot of road noise so that we could not talk between the driver/passengers. Also, after going over a bump, the van would oscillate several times before settling down. This did cause some motion sickness issues for passengers. When parked, even a young child walking across the width of the van would cause the entire van to tilt (2) Water storage - there was definitely something odd going on. After our first night, we ran out of water after doing 2 loads of dishes - probably 3-4 sink-fulls of water. At first, I thought this was the result of Britz not filling the water, but this happened several other times. So we never used the shower. This turned out to be ok, because we wound up staying at camp sites that had showers/kitchens, but I would be very concerned if we were at DOC sites with no water. (3) Kitchen bench cushions - that convert to a bed - had velcro, but the wooden slats underneath did not. This meant that while driving, the cushions would slip out constantly. The lack of velcro was very surprising (4). Fridge had a loose seal. It would detach from the door, which sometimes opened while driving. (5) WiFi through the TomTom was unusable. If traveling from abroad, I'd suggest simply buying a local Spark SIM card which works quite well. (6) Although we didn't use it much, the cruise control would sometimes not work. Not a huge deal breaker. (7) Took an hour for an agent to start with us at check-in. Bottom line: I'd probably rent a newer (Maui) van.

15 days/2200km in a Frontier around North Island as a family of 5 (Dad, Mum, 21,19 & 5yo daughters). The Auckland THL staff were friendly. The intro to the van was reasonable, but allow a day or so to figure out how the vehicle works yourself. Opting for the $7500 excess WAS a stressor throughout, but I felt the hand-back was pleasant even with a chipped windscreen (2x $55 - quite reasonable). The THL share pantry is brilliant, use it and repay the favour with your leftover items. Mercedes Sprinter: well behaved overall, easy to operate, good features. Consult the vehicle manual to figure out how it works - eg cruise/speed limiter is brilliant to use but not obvious at first. As a former truck driver I had no problems with the size, but at 2.3m wide and 7.2m long won't fit in a normal car park. No reversing camera! Honestly cannot understand why such a simple device isn't added - driver sees nothing directly behind the van. Also some caution needed when wind gusts combine with bumps to give it the wombles. Heaps of sleeping room inside; took us a few days to get into routine but pretty straightforward. Quite cosy, well insulated. Condensation is a natural consequence of 5 breathing bodies, even with the top vents and some windows a bit open. Vehicle aircon dried it out quickly, however still damp patches behind cushions/under mattresses. The linen provided was quite adequate (our daughters did take sleeping bags though). Kitchen and fridge is fine, reasonable range of utensils although for a family of our size the frypan/saucepan was a little limited in capacity. The cassette toilet to is actually easy to deal with (ask for more tablets so you can empty regularly). Hot water for shower never worked though. House battery was dodgy, which limits options at night (eg diesel heater is great, but needs power for fan). Most nights were lovely free spots, with van parks every few days for showers and power (4 adults=$$$). Next time I would plan for more Campable sites.

You fly for hours, anticipating your arrival, wanting to take in the area and the views of another country far away from your departure airport. The airport and the area you leave from is detailed and visually full, and you know you have a great airport scenery waiting for you at the other end of the flight, then when you arrive...

...  Nothing, but flat plain emptiness and the same boring standard X-Plane basic scenery, worse there is no OSM (Open Street Map) data in the tile either, so there is no road or autogen detailing in there as well, just well nothing.

When Drzewiecki Design released their UUEE Sheremetyevo Airport XP , I loved it because it was like a visitor from the Cold War past, the Soviet era, and it was also great scenery and great choice of a destination to fly to from any of the capitals of Europe...  but that was it, just this great airport in the middle of nothingness, bland....   zero ville.

Moscow old.jpg

Now Drzewiecki Design has released "Moscow City"  a scenery package to compliment their UUEE Sheremetyevo, and boy how much a difference this release has done to this totally boring area.

To get the full first impression effect I flew JARDesign's A320neo from EFHK Vatnaa, Helsinki to UUEE Sheremetyevo which is flight Finnair AY153 which is a daily 9.25am service.

Moscow City_ Dep Vatnaa 1.jpg

First Impressions

I was surprised to start picking up scenery still quite away out from central Moscow, as I approached my 6000ft transition altitude. Here there was buildings and houses and the physical visual notes you were arriving somewhere.

Moscow City_ Dep arrival 1.jpg

Looking hard at the horizon through the A320's windows and you could see the iconic silhouette of Moscow city.

Moscow City_ Dep arrival 5.jpg

The scenery provides lite versions of all Moscow's Airports, this is UUWW Vnukovo, which was easily recognisable as you flew over. As you fly closer to the centre of the city the density of the objects below becomes quite heavy as the landscape fills in. You have all kinds of infrastructure including, blocks of flats, tower blocks, factories, housing, skyscrapers and almost everything that makes up an urban landscape, in all there is 2000 custom-made buildings that makes up this impressive scenery.

A note here in that you don't get that rolling as you move feeling effect where as it just suddenly appears in front of you and then quickly disappears behind as soon as you have flown out over the area. There is a slight effect of that as there has to be, but only in the far distance and as you can see from the images the views in every direction are widespread and visually it is very good to excellent.

The "Seven Sisters" or "Stalinist skyscrapers" built from 1947 to 1953 are all in the scenery with their "Wedding Cake" architecture or officially  Russian Baroque               - Gothic style. Most famous is the Moscow State University, front and centre of the image below.

Moscow City_ Dep arrival LG 16.jpg

Central Moscow is excellent and extremely realistic, and you really need a travel guide to pick out the landmarks and detail, but it is hard to miss the Red Kremlin complex  and St Peter's square from the air.  Both sides of the aircraft is visually full until you have crossed right over the city.

Moscow City_ Dep arrival 7.jpg

I am not a fan of the generated 3d OSM scenery, but this is very good in blending in perfectly with the X-Plane default scenery and giving you a smooth transition from country to urban and back again with great realism.

Moscow City_ Dep arrival 14.jpg

Over the city and turning north towards Sheremetyevo, another Moscow airport UUMU Chkalovsky is represented on the turn.

Moscow City_ Dep arrival 17.jpg

The city skyline is now easily visible on landing at Sheremetyevo, and that really helps in the arrival factor, more so in that the cities building infrastructure spread now comes up and around the airport to fill the gaps to the city itself, and making the original  Sheremetyevo scenery that was so open and lonely in the old X-Plane view is now a big part of the whole in this combination. No doubt it really brings this always good scenery now alive and very usable.

Moscow City_ Dep arrival 19.jpg

Sheremetyevo Airport

Before we move on to the city itself. It is important to note the area around UUEE Sheremetyevo itself.

Moscow Sheremetyevo 1.jpg

Compare the large image above to the earlier image at the start of this review to see the amount of change there is around UUEE Sheremetyevo with the addition of this Moscow City package. The two sceneries are of course meant to be used together, and in reality it would look odd if you had Moscow City scenery installed without the Sheremetyevo scenery included to fill out the northern areas. A highlight is that both sceneries together form a single whole, as the areas between the airport and the central city area are well filled in and that gives you a huge area of coverage and the full visual aspect.

To get a closer lower look at the Moscow Center I commandeered Dreamfoil's lovely Bell 407.

Moscow Buildings 1.jpg

There is a 4.000km² total area covered with this scenery here, and you have expect some sort of building replication to cover all that ground. There is of course but as well in the fact there is also enough variations as to not keep it all interesting and not obviously visually obvious.

Moscow Buildings 2.jpg

The closer you go to the central area, the variations in the buildings change there in style and density as well. And then more of the iconic buildings start to appear as you get closer in again to the middle. The business district is excellent, with a lot of business towers and the more modern futuristic skyscraper architecture that stands out in every view point in eye scans across the city.

Moscow Buildings 5.jpg

The more recent is in tune with the more older Stalinist era that makes up the Moscow skyline.

The Kremlin Complex and the Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed (St Basil's) is excellently represented and so is "Red Square"

Moscow Buildings 10.jpg

There are Orthodox churches everywhere and all the big icons in the Moscow Cathedral Mosque, Cathedral of Christ the Savior, Grand Arena of the Central Lenin Stadium, Otkrytive Arena and department stores, museums and power stations and more....

I did have issues with many buildings floating, including the Kremlin. I tried both "Runways follow terrain contours" on and off with no flattening of the objects and there is no information in the manual either on how to fix the problem.

Night lighting is very good, yes there is again a repeatable pattern to the majority of the hundreds of the apartment blocks that does stand out, but the more individual buildings do all have that personal touch and some buildings look really very good.

Moscow Buildings Night 1.jpg

The highlight here is the business district which looks magnificent and is very realistic from any direction at night as is the lit Stadium.

Moscow Buildings Night 3.jpg

Although away from the central area the Ostankino Tower that stands 540.1 metres (1,772 ft) tall, and is the tallest freestanding structure in Europe and it looks great at night and is a very good position indicator from the air from any direction.

Included Moscow Airports

As noted also included in the scenery are seven airports and several helipads.

UUWW Vnukovo

Moscow UUWW Vnukovo 1.jpg

The futuristic Vnukovo International is very good for a lite version, with great terminals and lots of small detailing. Only thing missing is the static aircraft and a bit more ramp equipment, but otherwise it is highly usable.

UUDD Domodedovo

Moscow UUDD Domodedovo 1.jpg

The oldest of Moscow's International airports is Domodedovo. Again it is quite devoid of static aircraft and I am not crazy about the blue terminal glass work, but it is still a very workable scenery to use and has a lot of well made objects.

UUBW Zhukovsky

Moscow UUBW Zhukovsky 1.jpg

Zhukovsky was a major aircraft testing facility since the  cold war years, with most of the major Russian Experimental Design Bureau's having facilities here. It is also now used by the Ministry of Emergency Situations! and cargo carriers. It was also used as a test site for the Soviet Buran  reusable Spacecraft because it has the world's second longest pubic runway at at 5,402 m (17,723 ft). Mostly it is a collection of very large hangars but has a lot of static aircraft in storage.

UUMO Ostafyevo International Business Airport

Moscow UUMo Ostafyevo 1.jpg

A former military airbase. Ostafyevo features a new modern glass terminal, and caters primarily to business aviation.

UUMU Chkalovsky

Moscow UUMU Chkalovsky 1.jpg

Chkalovsky is a military logistics airport that is famous for it's support for the Russian Space program and transport to Star City and the Yuri A. Gagarin State Scientific Research-and-Testing Cosmonaut Training Center. Yuri Gagarin left here on his final flight before crashing by the town of Kirzhach.

UUBM Myachkovo Airport

Moscow UUBM Myachkovo 1.jpg

Myachkovo is a small General Aviation Airport that is owned by the Finpromko company. Cargo aircraft up to the size of the Ilyushin ll-76 freighter can also use the airport.

UUMB Kubinka

Moscow UUMB Kubinka 1.jpg

Kubinka has been a significant Russian military airbase and large airshows are held here to show off the Russian military might.

There is also provided UUU1 Kremlin Airport, within the Kremlin walls, but I couldn't get it to work? There are two pads in H1 and H2.

Your first thoughts after reviewing this excellent Moscow scenery is not with this actual package. You then wish that you could have this extensive scenery at London, Rome, Madrid, Berlin and the list could go on with any of your favorite European Cities, and don't count a load in the Middle East and Asia. But a London scenery like this would certainly be a godsend in our X-Plane world. Drzewiecki Design has already done Warsaw and Manhattan, so there is always hope.

It is not cheap either and you need to add in their UUEE Sheremetyevo scenery package on top of that as well. But you get an awful lot of ground covered here for your money, with the area covered here that is extensive...  huge and flying into Moscow will never be the same again.

A few areas to note in one that in my case a few of the buildings floated, the download is huge load at 1.4gb and this Russian area is not the best for navigation aids and programming FMS units as most waypoints are not recognised. Most of the airports ILS coordinates also have to checked and recalibrated (Drzewiecki Design do provide all the correct coordinates) so there is a little work to do to set up repeat services but the work is worth the results.

Not only is the actual Moscow city and all it's buildings supported, you also get seven (if lite versions) of Moscow's other airports included as well, but the framerate processing of all this huge amount of objects and scale is pretty good to excellent. Framerate does hurt more on a lower (helicopter) level and certainly you need a computer with a little extra power is in no doubt required, but overall for the size of the area the scenery is extremely efficient.

Yes I was impressed by this Moscow City Scenery, as this once very barren area of X-Plane is now a very attractive repeat destination as nothing can give you a greater fulfilment than seeing your destination appear in the distance and then give you a huge visual experience as you fly over and approach your destination.

Moscow City certainly delivers that and more...  Just more sceneries like this please!

Thank you for this very thorough (as always) review. I just bought it (it's on sale) and have only one disappointment so far: Red Square has no ILS or any landing aids at all for that matter. And what a nightmare of an approach! Also I was hoping the package would include an add-on that gives my c172 a big cup holder for my Stoli. Otherwise the scenery is gorgeous. What a country!

A Magazine for Those With a Passion to Travel in Style

Moscow: An Honest Review of this Amazing City

“ You’re going to Russia?!?! Why? ” I heard these words pretty much every time I announced my upcoming trip to the east.

This reaction is understandable. Most people in Europe and the United States have a Putin-provoked distaste of the Russian Federation, which is growing by the day. Politicians claim that Russia’s sole mission is to diminish and undermine western powers to strengthen its own. After all, the name Vladimir comes from two old Slavic words, which together mean “great ruler of the world.” Make of that what you will…

Even the non-political vision of Russia is unfavorable. Most think of a cold, grey, backward place with Soviet architecture or battle-hardened, weather-beaten people. However, arriving at the sleek Moscow Domodedovo airport, I was impressed. I had been right to rebut popular notions of an unwelcoming and stony place.

However, almost immediately after leaving the airport, the ground for my righteous vindication became shaky. Driving into the outskirts of Moscow, my mind drew comparisons to television images of North Korean suburbs. Miles of uniform houses and bleak tower blocks lined the roads.

At the Izmailovov Delta Hotel next to the famous market of the same name, things were not looking much better. Truly peculiar decorations and violently colored walls competed for one’s gaze in the hotel lobby. Luckily, the rooms themselves were perfectly comfortable, though not particularly noteworthy. I’d stay central next time.

After dropping bags, I ventured toward the Izmailovov market for a look at how the locals live. From a distance, the buildings that encase the market are vivid, intricate and quite something to behold. As it was late in the day, the market was empty. Shop shutters were closed and stalls were folded up. I got the same uneasy feeling I get when walking through Disney Land – as if this was what remained after the recent collapse of a utopian society.

While nearly all the vendors had packed up and gone home, a few stalls remained opened for business. All that was left was an abundance of satirical matryoshka dolls containing various countries’ political leaders in historical order.

A tattooed burly salesman came over to me as I withdrew François Mitterrand from the wooden bowels of Valéry Giscard d’Estaing.

“ Where are you from, friend? ” He asked.

Ignoring my response, he launched into a speech about his armed forces days and the political situation in Russia.

“ You really ought not to trust the government, ok? Putin is a dangerous man, you see. Someone’s always watching in this city. ”

The whiff of Glühwein that carried with each sentence made me doubt the erudition of his analysis. Then again… this is what we hear in the news. I was not sure what to believe. After thanking the man and hastily filling Charles de Gaulle with the rest of the presidents of the Fifth Republic, I made my way back to the hotel.

Emerging from the underground we rounded the corner and immediately found ourselves in Red Square. The sight demands you stop and stare.

The insurmountable walls of the Kremlin line the length of one side; halfway along lies Lenin’s tomb and opposite is the lavish exterior of the Gosudarstvennyi Universalnyi Magazin shopping center (or GUM, as it’s referred to, thank God). The architectural marvel of Saint Basil’s Cathedral stands at the south end, with the State History Museum at the other. Even though the foreboding structures radiate a rouge pastel hue into every corner of the square, there is a sense of openness. No-doubt there was a somewhat different atmosphere when thousands of Soviet soldiers goose-stepped through the square. Interestingly, the Russian army still marches like this today.

Walking around central Moscow, history oozes from every spire and pillar. Buildings seem to lean over as you walk past, as if peering down on whoever dares to enter these austere places. For every moment or event in Russian history, there is a dedicated museum.

The quality of each museum is notably high. In particular, the Armory inside the Kremlin holds astonishing collections of royal carriages from across the world and throughout the ages. The world-renowned Fabergé Eggs are displayed here too.

Having wandered around for so long during the day, we had no time to eat before attending the Ballet that evening. Sitting in the Bolshoi, the long day began to catch up with me.

It is now that I must make a confession: while attending a performance by one of the world’s greatest ballet companies, I fell asleep.

Thankfully, I woke up later in the second half and was treated to the final leaps and prances of Shostakovich’s The Bright Stream. As someone who is not a ballet aficionado, that was probably enough.

Feeling significantly perkier afterward, a late dinner was in order. Just behind the Bolshoi is VOGUE Café , a gastronomic outpost of the famous magazine. It claimed to serve an eclectic mix of Japanese, Italian and Russian dishes. Intrigued, we entered.

Adventurously, we accepted the offer of some Russian wine. Full bodied and berried, it was delicious. Our evident surprise led the waitress to explain that Russian food and drink has improved hugely over the last few years. As it turns out, since the United States and the European Union placed sanctions on Russia after their annexation of Crimea, food imports have been scarce. As a result, Russian producers have been forced to meet the demand and quality expected today. As a result, Siberian wines and cheeses now win awards around the globe.

When we left the restaurant, it was late. Only a day had passed, yet we had filled every minute with history, culture and food. The next three days followed a similar format and we continued to make our way down the list of museums and sights. A boat ride along the river is a must-do for alternative views of the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Afterwards, sit on the rooftop Strelka bar opposite the Cathedral of Christ the Savior and watch the 3-mile-long line of pilgrims move slowly forward.

On the third day, we were due to board an overnight train to Saint Petersburg, but there was still so much left to do. Truth be told, it was probably too much for another three days, let alone one.

Nonetheless, I was satisfied. Moscow had revealed itself to be a fascinating and impressive city. While the city infrastructure isn’t as up-to-date as most capitals, the needs of every modern traveler can be met. It certainly isn’t the cold and unfriendly place envisioned by most in the west. Moscow’s winning attribute is its omnipresent sense of untouched history. This is a feature that is so often lost amongst hordes of tourists in Europe’s capitals.

It goes to show: what we hear about places we haven’t been in the news or through general hearsay, we can formulate pretty strong prejudices in our mind. While the political realities may still be ugly, by visiting, you can learn to separate and appreciate the everyday, the culture and the history of a place. On one side of a great red wall in central Moscow, a tyrannical leader works. On the other side, wholly separated, lies a magnificent Red Square where an overwhelming sense of history reveals the essence of Moscow and of Russia. And it is truly remarkable.
