The ultimate guide to riding Route 66 on a motorcycle

There's arguably no more iconic American road trip than the Mother Road—here’s how to travel it on two wheels

By Roadtrippers

If your idea of a perfect motorcycle road trip involves scenic, winding roads far away from people, cities, and cars, Route 66 might not be for you. But if you’re a fan of American history, kitschy roadside attractions, classic neon signs, mid-century architecture, Indigenous heritage and culture, and talking to friendly locals, there is arguably no better road trip in the world than driving the Mother Road.

And if you ask me, the best way to experience it is by motorcycle.

Last year, Roadtrippers published Route 66: Chicago to Santa Monica , and I immediately jumped on the chance to take the book out for a proper test run. This past October, I spent 7 days riding Route 66 from Illinois to California. Here’s what I learned along the way.

Roadtrippers Route 66: Chicago to Santa Monica

What is route 66 .

Stretching 2,448 miles (3,940 kilometers) from Chicago in the east to Santa Monica in the west, Route 66 crosses through eight states and offers a near-perfect snapshot of the U.S.—from bustling cities to crumbling ghost towns. The original road was established in 1926, and during its mid-century heyday, small towns went all in on capturing the tourism that came along with the highway’s rise in popularity. Roadside attractions, diners, and motels sprang up along the route, many of which are still standing today. But as more and more sections of the original route were bypassed by interstate, other towns and destinations weren’t so lucky, and fell into disrepair or disappeared entirely.

Route 66 was officially decommissioned in 1985, but it has seen a revival in the last few decades. According to Rhys Martin, president of the Oklahoma Route 66 Association, a lot of the buzz can be attributed to Pixar’s 2006 movie Cars .

“The figure that’s quoted is that the businesses along the route saw a 30 percent jump just from the movie,” he says. “And as those kids grow up and introduce their own kids to Cars , that’s getting them interested in the history and the story. And now, just from a greater cultural standpoint, you have people who are more interested in authentic experiences.”

And despite the occasional tourist trap, you’d be hard pressed to find a more authentic road trip experience than Route 66.

What to ride on a route 66 motorcycle road trip.

When I first started planning my trip, I knew that I wanted to do it on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. I’d conjured up images of cruising down the highway on a chromed-out machine that, in many people’s minds, occupies the same cultural space as the Mother Road itself: a bit dated, perhaps, but still undeniably American.

Instead of a classic cruiser, I got the opportunity to ride Harley-Davidson’s new adventure motorcycle, the Pan America . Comfortable, fast, and able to go anywhere, it ended up being the perfect choice for the trip. And I couldn’t help but appreciate the juxtaposition between riding a new generation of Harley on the most classic American road.

For those not bringing their own motorcycle, the easiest choice is to rent a bike. Motorcycle rental company EagleRider has locations in both Chicago and Los Angeles, and the option of a one-way rental is available for an additional fee. EagleRider also offers guided and self-guided Route 66 tours. The 15-day self-guided tour package starts at about $2,500—however, it is entirely possible to ride all of Route 66 in 7 to 10 days, as long as you’re comfortable riding a few hundred miles per day.

If you’re able to pick up and drop off the bike in the same location, you’re going to have a lot more options. Peer-to-peer rental platforms such as Riders Share and Twisted Road generally offer a wider range of models at a lower price point than traditional rental companies. I’ve also heard of people purchasing a used motorcycle at the start of the route and selling it after they reach the end—but that involves a lot more risk, money, and paperwork than most people are going to be comfortable with.

What to pack for a Route 66 motorcycle road trip

No matter what bike you end up with, make sure it’s comfortable enough to ride long distances on, and that it has space to carry all your gear. Since Route 66 crosses through multiple states with widely varying climates, you’ll want to make sure you pack for all-weather travel.

Traveling on a motorcycle means always being exposed to the elements, with very little protection beyond what you’re wearing. Depending on the time of year you travel Route 66, you may hit everything from scorching heat to snowstorms (in fact, you’re likely to encounter both some of the hottest and coldest days of your journey just within the state of Arizona).

The best way to handle extreme weather on a motorcycle is to bring layers. Make sure you pack both warm and cool base layers, protective gear (built-in armor and abrasion-resistant fabrics are highly recommended), and rain gear. For next-level comfort in the cold, I recommend investing in heated gear.

Route 66 runs through multiple large or mid-sized cities, and you’re never far from restaurants or gas stations. That said, it’s always a good idea to carry water and snacks on your bike in case of an emergency. A basic toolkit can also be a lifesaver in unexpected situations. A lot can happen in 2,400 miles—parts rattle loose, tires wear out, and oil may need to be refilled. Make sure you carry tools that fit your specific bike, and regularly check things like brakes, fluid levels, tire pressure, lights, and bolts.

State-by-state itinerary.

Original route mileage: 301 miles (484 kilometers) Must-see highlights: Start of Route 66 sign, Gemini Giant, Illinois Route 66 Hall of Fame and Museum, Bunyon with a Hot Dog, Pink Elephant Antiques, World’s Largest Catsup Bottle

Route 66 starts in downtown Chicago. Anyone who’s ridden a motorcycle here, or in any major metropolitan downtown area, knows it’s not necessarily the most enjoyable experience; navigating around traffic, pedestrians, and one-way streets is a far cry from the open road. But it’s definitely still worth kicking off the trip with a photo in front of one of the Historic Route 66 “Begin” signs located along East Adams Street. One is on the north side of the street near Michigan Avenue and another on the south side, in a small park near Wabash Avenue. I was able to easily find motorcycle parking just in front of the Wabash Avenue sign.

If you’re already hungry, consider grabbing a donut hole from Lou Mitchell’s Restaurant & Bakery , or stop at Dell Rhea’s Chicken Basket just outside of the city for one of the most classic Route 66 dining experiences. Just a heads up: You’ll likely be eating a lot of greasy American cuisine over the next few days, so pace yourself.

A motorcycle parked in front of a large fiberglass statue of a man holding a rocket ship

Continuing on the greasy food theme, a favorite stop for bikers is the Launching Pad diner, a Route 66 staple in Wilmington, Illinois. The parking lot is typically packed with motorcycles and vintage cars, and the Gemini Giant Muffler Man makes for a great photo op. There’s also a gas station conveniently located across the street. I ended up spending more than an hour here talking to other motorcyclists who wanted to hear about my bike—the Pan America is still so new that seeing one out in the wild is a novelty, and I was more than happy to sing its praises. It was a good reminder: Motorcyclists love to talk about motorcycles, so make sure to factor in extra time for chit chat during gas stops.

About 100 miles southwest of Wilmington is Atlanta, another small town packed with Route 66 attractions. Don’t miss the Bunyon with a Hot Dog Muffler Man or the Route 66 Arcade Museum , both located on the same block of Arch Street in downtown.

After a long first day on the road, I rolled into St. Louis, Missouri, just as the sun was starting to set. I took a slight detour on the way to my hotel to check out Gateway Arch National Park , which was beautiful at sunset.

Original route mileage: 317 miles (510 kilometers) Must-see highlights: Gateway Arch National Park, Murals of Cuba, World’s Second Largest Rocking Chair, Uranus Fudge Factory, Gary’s Gay Parita, Red Oak II

My first stop after leaving St. Louis was at the Route 66 State Park visitor center, located just off I-44 along the Meramec River in Eureka, Missouri. It started raining as I pulled into the parking lot, so I went inside to hide from the weather. The visitor center has a small museum documenting the road’s history in the state, and a helpful staffer gave me a printed map and pointed me in the direction of the route’s original alignment.

A handing holding up a "Roadtrippers Route 66" guidebook in front of a very large rocking chair

As with much of Route 66, the original road in Missouri largely runs parallel to the interstate, and it’s easy to get on and off. With my tight schedule, I ended up making a list of stops ahead of the trip and, in the interest of saving time, jumped on and off the freeway between stops. Those with more time to spend on the route will be able to meander along on its original parts. This is an excellent way to find small towns that may be less touristy, but still packed with history and hidden gems. “Generally speaking, if you find yourself on the interstate and you’re passing a lot of towns, you’ve missed something somewhere,” Martin says.

While the Missouri stretch of Route 66 is often beautiful—it crosses through the lush, green Ozarks—the weather was not in my favor. It was pouring rain for most of the day I spent riding through the state, but with proper rain gear and a quick switch to “rain mode” on the motorcycle, it wasn’t too bad.

I stopped for lunch in Cuba, a town known for its murals depicting historical events. Since I don’t eat meat, I opted out of Missouri Hick ’s famous barbecue and instead found Little Shop of Comics & Audrey’s Eatery on Main Street, a cozy comic book shop with a cafe in the back. I ordered soup and waited out the rain.

Back on the road, I made my way to the World’s Second Largest Rocking Chair (it used to be the largest, until 2015, when an even bigger rocking chair in Casey, Illinois, knocked it down to second place), the Devil’s Elbow Bridge , and the Uranus Fudge Factory and General Store . The latter may be a classic tourist trap, but anyone who enjoys potty humor will have a good time in Uranus.

A smiling man seated on a bench on a porch next to a goose, surrounded by Route 66 memorabilia

One of my must-see stops was Gary’s Gay Parita , a replica of a 1930 Sinclair gas station. The property is packed with memorabilia from the heyday of Route 66, including vintage cars, gas pumps, signs, old glass bottles, and more. The current owner, George Bowick, has a wealth of Route 66 knowledge and is happy to share it with anyone who asks. As we were chatting, Lady Bird, his tame goose, nibbled on my boots. Bowick recommended I visit Red Oak II on my way into Carthage, so naturally I obliged.

Red Oak II is a unique type of place. Created by artist Lowell Davis, it’s a replica of the real Red Oak, Missouri, where Davis grew up. After leaving for many years and returning to find that his hometown had turned into a ghost town, Davis started moving buildings from the old town and restoring them on his farm just outside Carthage. The result is a quaint but eerie town that feels completely frozen in time. I didn’t see a single person during my visit, but a very sweet dog showed up out of nowhere and escorted me around.

Original route mileage: 13 miles (21 kilometers) Must-see highlights: Cars on the Route, Gearhead Curios, Rainbow Bridge

The Kansas section of Route 66 is short but sweet. In just about 13 miles, the state manages to pack in several can’t-miss stops. Entering into Kansas through Missouri’s Old 66 Boulevard puts you at the north end of Main Street in Galena (population: 3,000). Your first stop here should be Cars on the Route , a restored Kan-O-Tex service station. Grab some snacks or Cars memorabilia, and check out the old truck that inspired the movie’s Tow Mater character.

A motorcycle parked in front of a brightly colored vintage service station

As you ride down Main Street, you’ll come across the Galena City Jail, another vintage service station called Gearhead Curios, and a large “Galena on Historic Route 66” mural. I can never pass up a good bridge, so from Galena I continued onto the Rainbow Bridge, a beautiful Marsh Rainbow Arch bridge built in 1923 over Bush Creek.

If you have time for a detour, the Tri-State Marker just a few miles south of the route allows you to stand in three states at once: Kansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri, a worthy photo op.

Original route mileage: 432 miles (695 kilometers) Must-see highlights: Blue Whale of Catoosa, Buck Atom’s Cosmic Curios on 66, Seaba Station Motorcycle Museum, POPS Soda Ranch, Lucille’s Service Station, Sandhills Curiosity Shop

If you’ve ever traveled I-44 through Oklahoma, you’re already familiar with its most annoying feature: the frequent cash-only toll booth stops. From the Missouri state line and all the way to Oklahoma City, old Route 66 runs parallel to I-44, and if you have the time (and want to save a few dollars), it’s a much more pleasant way to travel. It’s also the easiest way to make sure you don’t miss any roadside attractions along the way.

The first must-see stop in Oklahoma on my list was the Blue Whale of Catoosa , one of the most recognizable stops along the route. I sat down at a picnic table for a snack while admiring this roadside attraction, originally built as an anniversary gift to a wife who loved whales.

A motorcycle parked in front of a large fiberglass statue of a man holding a rocket ship

In Tulsa, I took a much-needed break from greasy diners with lunch at Chimera Cafe. I had originally planned to avoid bigger cities as much as possible on this trip, but Tulsa is a real Route 66 goldmine and I ended up spending more time here than I originally planned. One of the highlights was Buck Atom’s Cosmic Curios and its Space Cowboy Muffler Man. Just as I was about to leave, a guy rode in on a dual-sport motorcycle to ask me about my bike. This turned out to be Chris Wollard, the local artist who designed and built the Space Cowboy’s shiny rocket ship ( Mark Cline fabricated the Muffler Man).

A few hours later I stopped at the Seaba Station Motorcycle Museum . While chatting with the guy at the front desk, I quickly realized we had friends in common. The museum is small but jam-packed with vintage motorcycles dating back to the early 1900s. Entry is free, but donations are appreciated.

I stayed the night in Elk City, home to the National Route 66 Museum. The next morning I was on the road by sunrise, heading toward my final stop in Oklahoma: Sandhills Curiosity Shop . Owned by “hillbilly hoarder” Harley Russell, it’s neither a store nor a museum—but it’s a classic Route 66 stop that makes for a great photo op.

Original route mileage: 186 miles (299 kilometers) Must-see highlights: Tower Conoco Station & U-Drop Inn, Slug Bug Ranch, Palo Duro Canyon State Park, Jack Sisemore Traveland RV Museum, Cadillac Ranch, Midpoint Cafe

The Texas Panhandle, with its flat plains and unrelenting stretch of I-40, isn’t necessarily known as the most scenic place to ride a motorcycle. However, this part of the Mother Road features some of its most iconic stops—and some of the best detours.

A towering art deco building against a blue sky

There are so many vintage service stations—restored or abandoned—along Route 66 that it’s impossible to visit them all. But if you only have time for one, the Tower Station and U-Drop Inn in Shamrock is a stunning art deco masterpiece that should not be missed. As a bonus, Ramone’s House of Body Art, the auto body shop in Cars , was heavily inspired by this building.

One of the more famous Route 66 attractions in Texas is Cadillac Ranch . And while that’s absolutely worth a stop, I found Slug Bug Ranch to be a less crowded and equally enjoyable alternative. Located just 15 miles east of Cadillac Ranch, this whimsical tribute features a row of Volkswagen Beetles buried nose down and covered in graffiti.

During my jaunt through Texas, I decided I’d had enough of riding straight, flat highways and needed a change of scenery. After grabbing lunch in Amarillo, I took a 30-mile detour south to Palo Duro Canyon State Park . Home to the second largest canyon system in the country, the gorgeous scenery and steep switchbacks of the park did not disappoint. If you go, remember to check the forecast beforehand—due to its microclimate, temperatures at the bottom of the canyon can be significantly higher than at the rim.

As I continued my journey west, I made a final stop in Texas at the Midpoint Cafe in Adrian. This roadside diner and gift shop marks the official halfway point of Route 66—1,139 miles down, 1,139 miles to go.

Original route mileage: 487 miles (784 kilometers)  Must-see highlights: Russell’s Travel Center & Car Museum, Tee Pee Curios, Blue Swallow Motel, Blue Hole of Santa Rosa, Tinkertown, Old Town Albuquerque, Laguna Pueblo, Bandera Volcano and Ice Cave, El Rancho Hotel

While New Mexico has no shortage of mid-century kitsch, it’s also arguably the best state along the route to dive deep into Indigenous history and culture. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the state’s pueblos and Native American villages were all closed to visitors during my trip.

Exterior of a vintage motel at dusk, with a lit neon sign and a 1950s car parked at the entrance

I spent the night at one of the most iconic accommodations along the route: the Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari, a classic 1940s motor court (each room comes with a private garage for your motorcycle) known for its spectacular neon signage. I rolled in right before sunset and was lucky enough to get the last available room, despite not having made a reservation in advance. This irked my neighbors in the room next door, who had made their reservations months earlier. But as several people I spoke to during the trip confirmed, the route was much less busy than normal because the pandemic had temporarily halted the influx of one of the most prevalent Route 66 travelers: the European tourist.

Tucumcari is worth a visit whether you’re staying the night or not. Pick up a souvenir from Tee Pee Curios , grab a home-cooked meal from Del’s Restaurant, or get a photo in front of one of the town’s Route 66 murals.

Heading west through the Land of Enchantment, Albuquerque contains the longest continuous stretch of Route 66 within a single city. Here, you can stand at the intersection of two different historical alignments of the highway. Beyond its Mother Road legacy, the city is also home to mid-century modern architecture , a Historic Old Town area packed with museums, the famous Balloon Fiesta (which, coincidentally, took place during my visit), and tons of artsy Southwestern charm. On my way into town, I took a detour to ride some proper switchback roads to the top of the Sandia Crest ridge.

A Hotel el Rancho sign on top of a building set against a cloudy gray sky

Before heading into Arizona, I stopped in Gallup to admire the historic El Rancho Hotel and say “howdy” to the cowboy Muffler Man at John’s Used Cars.

Original route mileage: 401 miles (645 kilometers) Must-see highlights: Chief Yellowhorse Trading Post, Petrified Forest National Park, Jackrabbit Trading Post, Standin’ on the Corner Park, La Posada Hotel, Two Guns, Twin Arrows Trading Post, Delgadillo’s Snow Cap, Hackberry General Store, Cool Springs Gas Station

In just over 400 miles, the Arizona stretch of Route 66 packs in so many must-see stops—including ghost towns, a national park, vintage service stations, interesting architecture, and roadside attractions—that it might be worth budgeting in some extra time to make sure you don’t miss anything. If you can, add an additional day to your itinerary for a detour to the Grand Canyon as well.

You’ll know you’ve entered Arizona when you see the big yellow signs for Yellowhorse , a Navajo-owned trading post set against a dramatic red rock backdrop. Both Yellowhorse and the neighboring Teepee Trading Post are perfect places to stop for souvenirs, photos, and snacks.

Large yellow billboard with a jackalope silhouette and the words HERE IT IS

My next stop was Petrified Forest National Park , the only national park to have a section of Old Route 66 preserved inside it. Exploring the entire park can easily take a full day or more—but for those only interested in the Mother Road marker, it’s located in the northern part of the park, a 20-minute ride from I-40 along a scenic road (note that you will need to pay the park entrance fee to access it).

Arizona has several towns that have gone all in on their Route 66 legacy, including Holbrook, Winslow, Seligman, and Kingman. But one of the more intriguing stops along the entire Mother Road is located off I-40 right in between Holbrook and Winslow. Those who’ve been paying attention may have noticed a few bright yellow mileage signs at other locations along the route. These all point to the Jack Rabbit Trading Post , an unassuming roadside souvenir store, and you’ll know you’ve arrived by the massive “Here it is” billboard.

Some other highlights in the Grand Canyon State include standing on the corner in Winslow, exploring the ruins of the Two Guns ghost town, grabbing a sundae at Delgadillo’s Snow Cap in Seligman, and riding the Oatman Highway—not for the faint of heart, it features 191 curves in 8 miles, a narrow roadway with no guardrails, and roaming burros that tend to be standing in the middle of the road as you’re coming around a tight turn.

A burro walking down a paved road surrounded by desert

The Arizona section of Route 66 also contains what is probably the most drastic change in climate you’ll find in a single state during your trip. On one of the days I spent here, I woke up to 45-degree weather in Flagstaff. A few hours later, as I was crossing the Colorado River and making my way into California, the temperature was closer to 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Make sure you’ve packed layers, or chances are you’ll be uncomfortable at some point.

Related: Lured by gold and ghosts, visitors just can’t quit the tiny mountain town of Oatman, Arizona

Original route mileage: 314 miles (505 kilometers) Must-see highlights: Roy’s Motel and Cafe, Amboy Crater, Calico Ghost Town, Elmer’s Bottle Tree Ranch, First Original McDonald’s Museum, Wigwam Village Motel No. 7, Aztec Hotel, Santa Monica Pier

The California section of Route 66 starts in Needles. As I was grabbing food at the local Wagon Wheel Restaurant, I noticed a hand-written sign inside, summing up the town: “Needles, California, hot spot known for absolutely nothing; 20 miles from water, 2 feet from hell.”

Heading west through the California desert, the first can’t-miss stop on this part of the route is Roy’s Motel and Cafe in Amboy. This gas station and souvenir shop is a popular stop for photos thanks to its iconic—and recently restored—neon sign. Nearby you’ll also find Amboy Crater , a 250-foot-tall volcanic cinder cone, where you can hike by lava lakes, basalt flows, and collapsed lava tubes.

A large neon sign that reads "Roy's Motel Cafe" with a vintage car parked in front of it

Make a pit stop at Calico Ghost Town , walk through the glass forest at Elmer’s Bottle Tree Ranch , and get nostalgic at the First Original McDonald’s Museum before it’s time to leave the more quiet and remote parts of this trip behind and enter the busy city streets of Los Angeles.

As you get closer to the coast, you may experience something you haven’t seen since you left Chicago: traffic. Los Angeles has a lot of it—however, since lane filtering is legal in the state, you can easily bypass it on a motorcycle. Just go slow and stay alert.

The western half of California’s Route 66 passes through several bustling cities and towns, where strip malls and chain restaurants greatly outnumber quirky roadside attractions. But keep your eyes peeled for mid-century architecture, neon signs, and vintage service stations along this stretch, including Cucamonga Service Station ; built in 1915, it actually predates the route.

Unfortunately you can’t ride a motorcycle all the way to the finish line—but when you reach the Pacific Ocean, park your bike and walk to the end of the Santa Monica Pier to get a photo in front of the iconic “End of the Trail” sign. Congratulations, you made it.

Our final stop for the day is Springfield, a city steeped in history as the home of President Abraham Lincoln. As we conclude this leg of our journey, reflect on the tales of the past and anticipate the adventures that lie ahead on the storied road of Route 66.

Day 5: Springfield - Oklahoma City, Ok

(Driving day 4: 494 km/312 miles)

Our adventure unfolds along the captivating stretches of Route 66. Our initial destination is the renowned Gay Parita Sinclair, a traditional gas station operated solely through donations and the sale of Route 66 memorabilia—a legacy left by Gary Turner, affectionately known as the kindest man on Route 66. Moving forward, we pass through Joplin and its welcoming “Welcome to Kansas” sign.

The Kansas leg of our journey is brief, covering approximately 31 km. Our stops include the famous “4 Women on the Route” and the Marsh Rainbow Arch Bridge, each brimming with historical charm. As we enter Oklahoma, a state that has admirably preserved much of the original Route 66 (spanning about 633 km), we witness the landscape shift from lush greenery to a drier environment. Oklahoma holds the distinction of being the state where the term “The Mother Road” originated and where locals predominantly utilize Route 66 due to tolls on Interstate 44.

Riding through the beautiful and verdant landscapes of Oklahoma, we make several noteworthy stops, including Tulsa, where we visit the Route 66 Harley Davidson, and Stroud, home to the iconic Rock Café.

Our journey continues, weaving through numerous small, charming Route 66 towns before reaching our final stop for the day: Oklahoma City. Despite being the 31st largest city in the U.S. by population, it claims the 8th spot in terms of land area, offering a diverse and expansive backdrop for our exploration.

Day 6: Oklahoma City - Amarillo, Tx

(Driving day 5: 427 km/267 miles)

Having immersed ourselves in the allure of Oklahoma City, our Route 66 odyssey presses on. Our next destination is Yukon, the hometown of the renowned country music artist Garth Brooks. From there, we journey to El Reno before setting our sights on Weatherford.

Transitioning into cowboy country and the vast expanse of Texas, our route takes us through prairie landscapes, featuring some straight-line stretches. Aptly, this day is also designated as “the steak” day, promising a culinary delight.

Our initial stop is Elk City, where we explore the National Route 66 Museum and capture moments in front of the iconic Route 66 sign. En route to Amarillo, we make a pit stop in McLean at a traditional Route 66 steakhouse for a delectable lunch. The establishment, known for its tender steaks, personally sources all beef to ensure the highest quality.

Upon reaching Amarillo, we embark on a series of enjoyable stops, including Cavender’s Boot City, where we stock up on cowboy accessories.

Following check-in at the hotel, we embark on a visit to a Route 66 legend—the “Big Texan Steakhouse.” Here, the renowned 2.2 kg (72 oz.) steak awaits, and those daring enough to finish the entire meal within 60 minutes (including the steak, baked potato, salad, shrimp cocktail, butter, and bread) earn the meal for free. A challenge attempted by many, conquered by a select few. Are you ready to take on the legendary Big Texan Steakhouse challenge?

Day 7: Amarillo - Santa Fè, Nm

(Driving day 6: 451 km/280 miles)

Prepare for a sun-soaked journey through the expansive landscapes of cowboy country, featuring long stretches of flat fields and countryside. Our route may include sections on I-40, as some parts of the old Route 66 are no longer drivable in this area.

Our first noteworthy stop is the iconic “Cadillac Ranch,” where you have the opportunity to leave your mark on a unique work of art. We then proceed to Adrian, home to the “Midpoint U.S. Route 66,” marking the halfway point on our journey to Los Angeles. A stop at the local Midpoint diner for a cup of coffee precedes our exit from Texas and entry into New Mexico.

Continuing our adventure, we arrive in Tucumcari, where a visit to the friendly “Blue Swallow” motel awaits. Lunch in Tucumcari fuels us for the drive to Santa Rosa.

Our final destination for the day is Santa Fe, hailed as one of the most beautiful cities in the western United States and the capital of New Mexico. Santa Fe will graciously host us for the next two nights. Within minutes of navigating Santa Fe’s narrow streets, you’ll find yourself enamored with the city and its welcoming population. Get ready to fall in love with the charm of Santa Fe!

Day 8: Santa Fè

(Explorer & fun day)

Having covered more than half the distance on our Route 66 adventure, we’re taking a well-deserved day off in Santa Fe to recharge our batteries and delve deeper into the wonders of this enchanting city. Nestled high in the mountains, against the backdrop of the scenic “Sangre de Cristo,” Santa Fe boasts a rich tapestry of Spanish and Native American history and culture, evident in its local art and architecture—a unique blend that captivates every visitor.

Today is yours to savor as you see fit. Whether you choose to relax by the pool, explore the myriad art galleries, embark on a guided city tour, or visit one of the town’s microbreweries, the options are as diverse as Santa Fe itself. Don’t miss the chance to peruse the local market and acquire a piece of unique art. And, of course, indulge your taste buds with a serving of the renowned “Green Chili Stew,” a favorite among our guests, as Santa Fe’s cuisine is celebrated far and wide.

In the evening, we embark on a genuine cowboy experience at a rustic cowboy restaurant. Here, we’ll savor succulent steaks, revel in good company, and embrace the authentic cowboy way of life. A delightful way to wrap up our day of relaxation and exploration in the heart of Santa Fe.

Day 9: Santa Fè - Gallup, Nm

(Driving day 7: 367 km/226 miles)

Embarking on a cultural transition from cowboy country to the sacred territory of Native Americans, today promises an enriching journey through landscapes inhabited by indigenous peoples for centuries. Our adventure commences with a ride along small, winding roads leading to Madrid. Once a historic coal mining town turned ghost town, Madrid has transformed into a vibrant community boasting over 40 shops and galleries, several restaurants, a spa, and a museum.

Following our exploration of Madrid, we continue our drive just outside Albuquerque to the Route 66 Casino, where a delicious lunch awaits. Our journey then takes us directly to Acoma Sky City, the revered holy city of the Acoma Indians perched atop a lofty mesa. Arriving at the base, we park outside the Acoma Museum, secure tickets, and board a bus for the ascent to the holy city—walking up independently is strictly prohibited. Once at the top, we remain together and close to the guide, with ample opportunities to acquire unique handmade Native American art.

As the day unfolds with cultural exploration and breathtaking scenery, we conclude our journey by driving to Gallup, reflecting on the rich heritage and traditions of the indigenous lands we’ve traversed.

Day 10: Gallup - Williams, Az

(Driving day 8: 390 km/244 miles)

Anticipate a day of desert driving and encounters with unique natural wonders. Our journey begins in the expansive territories of the Navajo and Apache as we make our way to the Petrified Forest and the Painted Desert. Is it stone or wood? Is the sand truly painted? These questions linger as we traverse this captivating nature reserve, leaving indelible memories.

Our route then leads us to Holbrook and Winslow, where we pause at the iconic “corner.” For Eagles fans, it’s a moment to connect with the lyrics, “Standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona.” Lunch in Winslow provides a chance to refuel.

After our glucose recovery, we continue our adventure along Route 66 to Williams, a destination that stands out as one of the coolest stops on this historic route. Our stay in Williams promises a night filled with fun and memorable experiences. Get ready to immerse yourself in the charm and allure of Williams on Route 66!

Day 11: Williams - Grand canyon - Kingman, Az

(Driving day 9: 433 km/271 miles)

Welcome to the Grand Canyon—a day that promises to be the tour’s pinnacle for many. Our journey commences with a drive to the Grand Canyon Visitor Center, offering you the opportunity to witness the world’s most-viewed Imax movie. As the film unfolds, the experience is nearly akin to standing within the majestic Grand Canyon itself. Following this cinematic encounter, we embark on a ride into the Grand Canyon, capturing this year’s holiday photo amidst its breathtaking vistas. Note: Helicopter rides must be pre-booked for this extraordinary experience.

Once we bid farewell to the Grand Canyon, our route leads us to the charming town of Seligman, a staunch advocate for Route 66’s origin. Seligman exudes a playful, cozy, and traditional Route 66 ambiance, providing ample photo opportunities. The remainder of the day unfolds with desert driving, soaring temperatures, and enchanting scenery. A stop in Hackberry, a small, historic Route 66 gas station frozen in time like a scene from an old movie, invites us to savor ice cream or cola in the shade. Our journey then cruises to Kingman, another pivotal city on this iconic route.

Day 12: Kingman - Las Vegas, Ne

(Driving day 10: 229 km/143 miles)

Embark on the day with a breathtaking drive to Oatman, a historic western village nestled in Mohave County, founded by two gold prospectors in 1915. The journey to Oatman unfolds along narrow, winding roads that traverse varying elevations, offering stunning vistas of mountain and desert landscapes—a cinematic experience and a highlight of the tour. In Oatman, be sure to secure your bikes, and keep an eye out for donkeys and playful “outlaws” roaming the streets.

Continuing our adventure along Route 66, we proceed straight to the dazzling lights of Las Vegas—the city often referred to as “The Adult Playground” or “Sin City.” Here, the possibilities for entertainment are limitless, from stunning architectural wonders to unique shows, world-class casinos, and a plethora of entertainment options. Las Vegas is a city that never sleeps, ensuring a vibrant and dynamic atmosphere throughout your stay.

Highly recommended stops include iconic landmarks such as Caesars Palace, Bellagio, MGM, Stardust, Treasure Island, The Venetian, Mirage, and the Wyatt. In the evening, indulge in the spectacle of volcanic eruptions every 15 minutes at the Mirage, where the garden transforms into a mesmerizing flame show. Inside the casino, encounter rare white tigers, and don’t miss the captivating water show outside the Bellagio—a memory to last a lifetime. Las Vegas offers an unforgettable experience, where every corner holds a new adventure waiting to unfold.

Day 13: Las Vegas - Big Bear Lake, Ca

(Driving day 11: 352 km/219 miles)

Embark on a day filled with diverse driving experiences, navigating through cityscapes, highways, and the desert, where temperatures can soar. To ease the impact of the heat, we recommend donning a hydration (cooling) vest for a more comfortable ride. After a hearty breakfast, our journey begins with a drive along “the strip,” culminating in a memorable group photo session in front of the iconic “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign.

Our route then leads us towards Los Angeles, with a pit stop at the captivating Calico Ghost Town. Lunch awaits us in the historic town of Barstow. Following our midday break, we continue our journey to the picturesque vacation haven of Big Bear Lake, where we savor the enchantment of our final evening on the road. Get ready to immerse yourself in the beauty of Big Bear Lake, creating lasting memories as we conclude this magical adventure.

Day 14: Big Bear Lake - Los Angeles, Ca

(Driving day 12: 248 km/154 miles)

Concluding our tour with a grand finale, today promises an exhilarating ride along one of the United States’ finest motorcycle routes—the Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2). Brace yourself for a breathtaking journey with roads that weave through magical landscapes, offering spectacular views that are sure to be etched in the annals of motorcycle history. Ensure your cameras are not only ready but fully charged, as this is a ride that encapsulates a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Our adventure along Angeles Crest Highway includes strategic stops to fully absorb the awe-inspiring surroundings before we set our course toward Los Angeles. Upon returning our bikes and checking into the hotel, we continue our celebration with a drive to the iconic Santa Monica Pier—the symbolic endpoint of Historic Route 66 and the venue for our farewell party. Let’s bid adieu to this remarkable journey in style at the historic terminus of Route 66.

Day 15: Departure - Home Travel

As we check out of the hotel, a shuttle bus awaits to transport us to the airport for our journey back home. We extend our heartfelt appreciation for choosing to travel with us and creating unforgettable memories on this incredible ride.

Route 66, AKA "The Mother Road". With its 97 years of history this year, Route 66 began as the road to travel for migrants, dreamers and desperadoes. Later it became a must, for generations of holidaymakers, who wanted to explore the old pathway to the west. The 1950s were Route 66's peak, when thousands of cars drove "bumper-to-bumper" to experience the western emigration route. Hotels, motels, gas stations and other symbols of "Americana" sprung up everywhere along the way. Much of Route 66's original roads, restaurants, gas stations, and landmarks are preserved much as they were in the 50s. In 2024, Route 66 is not only heaven for bikers of all kinds, it’s also one heck of a nostalgia trip.

Itinerary (17 days)

Day 1 - saturday, september 14, 2024: meet you in chicago.

Welcome to Chicago the 'Windy City'. Meet you downtown at our hotel where we enjoy a great Welcome Dinner and celebration with your fellow riders. Before that you may want to visit some of the highlights Chicago has got to offer: a river sightseeing tour, Willis Tower, Navy Pier, Sphere, some blues or jazz clubs - just to name a few.

Day 2 - Sunday, September 15, 2024 - miles: 142, kilometers: 228

route 66 wrecks

Big day today: We start riding Route 66! When you hear "Gentlemen Start Your Engines" the fab Route 66 starts indeed and we say good-bye to the windy city for good. One hour out of town is Wilmington. For many this is the spot where Route 66 really begins. It’s here that you’ll find that kitsch classic, the Gemini giant. It’s a 30 foot tall fiberglass "muffler man" from the 1960s. Back in those days these giant colossal men were all over the good old US of A. They typically held "tools" in their hands from mufflers, to hot dogs, to axes, and more. In this case, the Gemini Giant holds a rocket ship, a reminder of the 1960s space race. As the American landscape changed most of these enormous men were eventually retired. But here in Wilmington, the large green man holds on.

Continuing on IL 53 to Braidwood, the next photo opportunity is the Polka Dot Drive-In at 222 N. Front St with its Elvis, Marilyn, James Dean and Betty Boop statues.

At 400 S. West St. in Odell, there is a restored Depression-era gas station, which happens to be very cool. It was built in 1932 and served travelers on Route 66 until the 1960s. Then it became a body shop - until that eventually closed its doors in 1975. Years of neglect took their toll on this old Standard station, which is still here today thanks entirely to the preservation efforts of the Illinois Route 66 Association and their Preservation Committee. Check out the glass visible register type pump, in which the amount of gas you wanted to purchase was pumped into the glass tank, and gravity fed it into the fuel tank.

Route 66 road sign

Just a block away from the old Mobil station, an old Catholic Church stands along Route 66. During what might be called the golden days of Route 66 there was a tunnel which ran underneath Route 66 at this very spot, directly between the school and this church. The tunnel was constructed to give children and adults alike safe passage to and from the church. It was eventually filled in after Route 66 and Odell was bypassed by the Interstate.

Further south and before arriving in Pontiac, we stop for a look at number 18700 Old Rt. 66. This is the intersection of Pontiac Rd. (2 lane 66) and the 4 lane Route 66 on the north side of town. Check out the Old Log Cabin Inn. It may look like it’s always been there – but in actual fact it originally faced the much older Route 66 alignment. When the alignment changed the whole building was lifted and turned around 180 degrees.

If we get to Pontiac before 5PM we should visit the museum and Packard showroom in town for a preview of the adventure which lies ahead. Don’t forget to take a picture of the mural on the wall of the museum!

In Towanda at Route 66’s 1954 alignment, an abandoned piece of asphalt with a painted map created by volunteers just reinforces the fact that our journey has only just begun.

Day 3 - Monday, September 16, 2024 - miles: 197, kilometers: 317

route 66 the American Dream

About four miles beyond Shirley, Illinois, we will arrive to Funks Grove Road. This is a secret place that many people miss on their way. We may stop at the Maple Sirup Shop if they can accommodate us.

Soon our bikes will take us to Atlanta IL to check out another huge fibreglass man – this one named Tall Paul. This particular "Muffler Man" stood for many years in front of Bunyon's across town in Cicero, Illinois along Ogden Ave. When Bunyon's closed the owners were offered $10,000 for Tall Paul but decided instead to "permanently loan" it to the City of Atlanta as one of their Route 66 Heritage Exhibits. Tall Paul is accessible 24 hours a day.

Across the street it is Coffee time! We not only have a chance to enjoy espresso shots but we also meet Angel in 'The Palms Grill Cafe' - a great little place with faithfully restored small tables and vinyl-covered chairs that has been serving Route 66 travelers since the 1934!

Route 66 riding

We continue our way to the rare still drivable brick-paved 2 lane roads from 1931! Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this beautiful 1.4 mile long piece of restored hand-laid brick road is a segment of 66, placed over a concrete roadbed. Located just off this section Rick is waiting for us with antiques, collectibles and great selection of Route 66 souvenirs.

When the original route 66 concrete was laid around Virden IL in 1926 a turkey came out of the wild, did a little walking on the fresh surface and made his marks for the next millennium. Now there is a sign we stop at and take a picture – how FUN it is (also a smoke break)!

In Carlinville, the old folks still get to talking about the legend of Angus Bailey. The man in question was a loner who rode into town on a cold, windy night way back in 1890. He wanted a nice, juicy steak and some fine sipping whiskey, so Bailey walked into a saloon on this spot and sat down to enjoy his meal. Just then a fight broke out. Well it turned out that Angus Bailey was the cause of it, as he was falsely accused of cattle rustling by an ornery individual known as Old Man Merriweather. Before he knew it, Angus was swinging from a rope on the north side of the town square. As the snow fell that night, the quiet loner was buried in a shallow grave on the edge of town. So far so tragic but here’s where it gets strange. The story goes that the very next night Angus Bailey walked back into the saloon to finish his meal. The saloon owner, though terrified, prepared one of his finest cuts of beef and opened his best bottle of whiskey. When he finished, Angus was seen to ride back out of town, the same way he had come in. With the wind blowing and the snow falling he never once looked back. Legend has it, the ghost of Angus Bailey can still be seen north side of the square in Carlinville on nights when the weather is foul, enjoying the best food and drink in all the county. We had better be fast if we want to do the same, there is no lunch served in town between 2 and 5 PM.

route 66 wrecks

Next stop is Mt. Olive, and the Soulsby's gas station. Open from 1926 until the early 90s this was one of the longest operating gas stations on the old Mother Road. Henry Soulsby built it in order to have a business to pass on to his son Russell, and the landmark filling station would continue pumping gas for another fifty years after the Route 66 designation had been removed from the pavement outside. Russell Soulsby was trained in the Army as an electronics repairman and used the north side of the station to run a second business - of servicing the community's radios and televisions.

driving usa america route 66

Along with the bright reds and yellows of the recent restoration, the most striking feature of Soulsby's Station is on the south side of the property where the repair rack shares space - quite intimately - with an old oak tree. With no room inside for automobile service, repairs were all made on the steel ramp outside. Over the years a tree began to spring up between the tire rails on the rack. It’s still there, rising up out of the middle, preventing modern automobiles from venturing up onto it. This Mount Olive landmark gives Route 66 another signature quirk.

Next stop is the Country Classic Cars - a dealer that has about 600 classic cars for sale in sheds we can visit. This sight is too much to absorb...

Staunton has another special treat for true Route 66 aficionados. We can't pass through Staunton without a stop at Henry's Rabbit Ranch. Look out for the bright "Hare It Is" sign located on the old 1930 - 1940 alignment of Route 66. This sign is actually a riff on the renowned "Here It Is" sign at the Jackrabbit Trading Post on Old Route 66 in Arizona.

The Chain of Rocks Bridge was, for a time, the path used by Route 66 to cross over the Mississippi river, carried Route 66 traffic across the Mississippi from Illinois to Missouri from 1929 through 1967. It’s most notable feature is the 22-degree bend occurring at the middle. This peculiarity was necessary to establish sound footings in the treacherous channel. The bridge now only carries walking and biking trails over the river.

CORB was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.

Day 4 - Tuesday, September 17, 2024 - miles: 247, kilometers: 397

route 66 fun riding

Today we will not only ride on Route 66's finest roads, but stop at the Fanning 66 Outpost. Stocked with a goodly selection of Route 66 souvenirs and collectibles including a taxidermy shop, archery range and the world’s largest rocking chair, according to the Guinness Book of Records. At 46 inches tall and weighing some 26,500 pounds it could hardly be anything else!

Devil’s Elbow is a famous or should we say infamous stretch of Missouri Route 66 legend - and the Big Cut area of the Mother Road. It used to be considered one of the most dangerous sections of old Route 66. Today it is an agreeable break in a pleasant, park-like setting.

Devil's Elbow was a popular resort town in the 1930s and 40s. With the picturesque Big Piney River’s and the beautiful Ozark Hills as a backdrop it’s easy to see why.

Day 5 - Wednesday, September 18, 2024 - miles: 202, kilometers: 325

We visit "Gay Parita Service Station" first thing in the morning. This is a must stop in a wonderful world of Route 66 attractions. We could easily spend hours just going through all the treasures there.

Welcome to Kansas! Kansas has got the shortest stretch of Route 66 asphalt: only 13 beautiful miles. In Galena there is a chance we meet "Tow Mater" from the movie CARS – the original 1951 International boom truck next to the old garage on the old Route 66 where we have lunch.

On our way to Baxter Springs, Kansas and just few miles west of Riverton we come to the Marsh Arch "Rainbow Bridge" on the old alignment of Route 66. This is one elegant old bridge, though it is far smaller than the old Spring River Bridge, which did not survive the "new is better" ethos so evident during the 1970s and 80s.

As we ride through Miami (and we are starving) we won’t miss Waylan’s Ku-Ku Burger with its giant Cuckoo Clock outside. This little fast food restaurant with a cuckoo bird popping out of its cuckoo clock roof has been a Route 66 icon for decades.

Then, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the appropriately named Totem Pole Park is home to the World’s Largest Concrete Totem Pole, a 90 foot totem pole that towers over the park in an astonishing array of folk art colors, with the four nine-foot Indians near the top each representing a different tribe.

Between 1937 and 1948, one Ed Galloway built the totem pole utilizing some 28 tons of cement, six tons of steel, and 100 tons of sand and rock. Ed’s personal tribute to the American Indian features a collection of some 200 carved pictures.

Route 66 byway

Day 6 - Thursday, September 19, 2024 - miles: 217, kilometers: 350

We begin the Ozark Trail section by crossing over Rock Creek, an iron bridge with a brick deck from 1925; passing by a real relic of Americana, a defunct drive-in movie theater, and then hang onto the curves through a narrow RR subway.

Seaba Filling Station: listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this Route 66 landmark is now filled with over 65 vintage motorcycles from 1908 to present. The Seaba Station was built in 1921, five years before historic Route 66 was certified as a national highway. Let us pay a visit to browse through motorcycle displays, antiques, souvenirs and more.

At Arcadia, Travelers frequently pause to consider the statue of Washington Irving, and all his works and deeds. Then there’s the iconic Round Barn, according to many the most photographed spot of all on Route 66. These days there is yet another reason to stop in Arcadia: POP'S, a somewhat futuristic looking restaurant on Route 66 that’s bound to become one of the many instantly recognizable landmarks on "America’s Main Street"!

The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum on Oklahoma City features a superb collection of classic and contemporary western art. The exhibition wing houses a turn-of-the-century town and interactive history galleries that focus on the American cowboy, rodeos, Native American culture, Victorian firearms, frontier military and western performers.

driving usa america route 66

We continue our trip West reaching the interestingly named South Canadian River and the 38-arch bridge which traverses it. This bridge was indeed constructed using 38 low-rise truss arches, some 19 on each side. These arches are also known as "ponies": they are painted yellow and visible from some distance. Take a quick look at our little video of crossing the bridge, which happens to be gateway to one of the most pleasant drives on all of Route 66. It’s here you get the authentic feeling that comes from riding on a two-lane cement road which hugs the very contours of the earth, and rises and falls gently with the hills. Going down this road you get a sense of what it must’ve been like crossing Route 66 back in the 1930s ... except that you're almost certainly going much faster than they did back then!

driving usa america route 66

The seams in the cement reverberate with a gentle rhythm on the ride up to the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum. Largely due to Jim Ross and Shellee Graham's many fine Route 66 photographs, probably this is the best out of the many museums on Route 66.

Day 7 - Friday, September 20, 2024 - miles: 193, kilometers: 311

As befits its name, The National Route 66 Museum in Eric celebrates Route 66, not just in the state of Oklahoma, but all eight Route 66 states. The museum features a walk through scale model of all eight states focusing on the ordinary folk who lived, worked and traveled the old Mother Road. The murals are quite realistic and the exhibits include vintage automobiles and antiques from the bygone hey-day of Route 66.

driving usa america route 66

There was a time when everything west of Eric was considered to be the "Great American Desert". This is also explained by the fact that until it was realigned, Erick used to be right on the Texas border.

We go just one block south of Roger Miller Boulevard and check Bonebrake Hardware "Museum". In the 1960s the owners retired: just locked the doors for the night and left. Nobody has ever seen them after. Today you can look in the store windows to see dusty counters and inventory, otherwise unchanged.

There was a time, the 1930s to be precise, when Shamrock was a prosperous oil town. A conspicuous reminder that the old Route 66 ran through Shamrock, is the Tower Service Station and U-Drop Inn Conoco , since 1936 it’s been a Texas Route 66 milestone. The U-Drop Inn Cafe, named by a local schoolboy in a contest that awarded him $50.00 for his idea. To this day, it is still one of the most upscale eateries on U.S. Highway 66 between Oklahoma City and Amarillo.

driving usa america route 66

Oozing old time atmosphere, the small Panhandle town of McLean is a trip back in time to a true Route 66 experience.

McLean’s Devil's Rope Museum is dedicated to barbed wire, or the Devil's rope as it’s sometimes called around these parts. The Museum features the history of barbed wire, and artifacts which are a reminder of the significance of this invention, and its impact on the Old West’s development.

driving usa america route 66

The restored Phillips 66 Gas Station – Now this is truly history. Not only was it the first Phillips 66 Service Station in Texas, built as it was in 1927, but the gas pumps show the price of gas at a mere 19¢ a gallon!

On we ride, to another historic railroad town, this one dating back to 1902, Groom, Texas. Arguably its chief attraction is the neck-turning "Leaning Tower of Texas" actually just a water tank tipping perilously to one side. One leg of the Britten USA water reservoir is actually shorter than the others. It was built this way just to catch the tourist's eye and get them to stop for a while in Groom. Another attraction for the Interstate traveler is the Groom Cross. With a height of 190 feet, the Groom Cross is reported as being the 2nd biggest cross in the northern hemisphere. Built on private property it is visible for miles as you approach this panhandle town. Though it doesn't date back to the very first days of Route 66 it’s definitely in the spirit of the old Mother Road.

Then, you can’t miss them and why would you want to? We mean ten graffiti-covered cars that are half-buried, nose-down and rise up out the desert terrain, and collectively known as The Cadillac Ranch. Built in 1974 by Stanley Marsh and The Ant Farm, a San Francisco Art Collective, the ranch is located along the fringes of historic Route 66 facing west "at the same angle as the Cheops' pyramids." The Cadillacs are all emblematic of the "Golden Age" in American Automobiles (1949 through 1963). The line-up of cars and their position all the way out in a field allows for some atmospheric photography. Their distance from any watchful eye of authority also encourages ever-changing layers of painted graffiti, which Marsh has never had much of a problem with. Interesting to note however, that in 1997 encroaching development forced Marsh to pick up and move the whole Caddy farm that much further West.

When Amarillo and the 66 come to mind, one of the first places you probably think of would be the Big Texan Steak Ranch, and if not, it should be. Open since 1960, The Big Texan has become world-renowned for its 72oz steak eating challenge. If you can eat a shrimp cocktail, salad, baked potato with fixin's, and a 72oz steak (about 2 kg) within 60 minutes your meal is free! But if you can’t quite make it, you’ll have to foot a bill of around $70 plus tip. Only around 1 in 6 customers are successful, according to the Big Texan website .

Day 8 - Saturday, September 21, 2024 - miles: 301, kilometers: 485

Route 66 cafe stop

We have officially reached the halfway mark when we arrive at the town of Adrian, Texas. This little Route 66 town’s claim to fame is that it’s the midpoint of the 2,278 miles between Chicago, IL and Santa Monica, CA. Some pictures under the halfway sign are a photo opportunity too good to miss.

On the border of Texas and New Mexico we visit the "Ghost Town" of Glenrio built in 1926. Current population now is 2.

Onto to New Mexico and a full day of both riding and sightseeing, we ride through Tucumcari, where the neon lights of the archetypal motel The Blue Swallow have been a beacon for road weary travelers since 1939. Lunch at a Mexican restaurant fortifies us for the afternoon in Tucumcari

Day 9 - Sunday, September 22, 2024 - Rest day!

A well deserved break! It is time for a little rest now and Santa Fe is a perfect spot. You can do the laundry, visit the many galleries and art exhibitions or just relax by the pool!

When Wild Hogs came to Madrid... If you have always been curious about what it would be like to be living in the midst of a major movie production while it’s being shot, than this site should be right up your street. It chronicles the shoot of the Disney movie Wild Hogs as it in took place in Madrid, New Mexico. The film is about ageing suburban bikers who face down a serious gang and starred John Travolta and Tim Allen. For an entirely different kind of experience, it’s interesting to note that Madrid and the area surrounding it, is reputed to be haunted. There has been many a ghost sighting around the town, in the old church and the cemetery, but perhaps most of all the Mine Shaft Tavern. Both guests and staff have reported seeing doors pushed open by unseen hands, doors that then swing eerily in the breeze. Glasses fall from shelves and smash on the floor, mysterious sounds are heard through the six inch abode walls, furniture is moved about in the middle of the night, and perhaps strangest of all, employees at the Mine Shaft tell of looking in the mirror to see a ghost staring back at them. Spooky!

Next stop is The 66 Diner which looks, feels and even tastes like a Mother Road classic. Uniformed waitresses work the dining area to the beat of 1950s era rock-and-roll blasting from an old time juke box. Bright red ceiling lamps are suspended over aqua-blue counter stools. There’s a hopscotch game built into the black and white tiled floor. But best of all you can chow down on traditional Route 66 roadside fare. Try their hamburger or a sloppy Joe with French fries and a world beater milk shake, or a pounded-tender chicken-fried steak coated in gravy with a side of mashed potatoes. Check out their daily blue-plate specials, such as Tuesday’s chicken pot pie and Saturday’s hot turkey sandwiches.

A little further west and we arrive at Grants, where we overnight.

Day 11 - Tuesday, September 24, 2024 - miles: 211, kilometers: 340

Route 66 abandoned old truck

Let’s check out a real slice of the Old West, Hollywood style. Gallup's El Rancho Hotel was built in 1937 on historic Route 66, and is now protected and cared for by preservationists. Well, back in the olden days of the Western, the Gallup rented rooms to literally 1000s of movie stars while they were in town making movies. And it sure looks the part, with its sweeping staircase and huge stone fireplace, plus old Hollywood star portraits and Navajo art filling the two story lobby of this rustic hotel. There’s also a fine selection of Southwestern and Mexican cuisine available in the "Old West" 49er Lounge.

If it’s Native American pottery, baskets, beaded items, artifacts you’re after, you will certainly find them at Richardson's Trading Company located in Gallup’s downtown area. It’s a great place to select some one-of-a-kind Native American artwork.

Some of the most outstanding geologic and fossil records of the Late Triassic period anywhere can be found at our next destination, Petrified Forest National Park. Driving through the park takes all of 45 minutes but if the riders are keen, we can stay a little longer for a prehistoric history lesson. Research conducted in the park turns up new evidence all the time, ranging from petrified wood to dinosaur bones.

driving_route_66_holiday

Old time trading posts and motels straight out of 1950s Americana still line Route 66 in Holbrook. The area around Holbrook is a nirvana for rock hounds, as the so-called Painted Desert is still fertile ground for discovering dinosaur remains. Tonight’s accommodation is something special, for we sleep in a wigwam at the Wigwam Motel, where don’t worry, the tents are complete with the amenities for a comfortable stay.

Day 12 - Wednesday, September 25, 2024 - miles: 106, kilometers: 171

There are of course many attractions along Route 66, some of which might best be described as curiosities. We can’t stop for all of them, but who could resist the charms of a 10 foot high jackrabbit with a saddle across its back? This is a great, tongue-in-cheek photo opportunity. There’s not much else to do at this spot on the I-40 in the middle of the desert, aside from a visit to the Jack Rabbit Trading Post that is.

It’s certainly curious that despite being in the proverbial middle of nowhere, the Jack Rabbit Trading Post has its own on and off ramps for I-40. The story behind them is this: Back in 1967 an Arizona state senator named Glenn Blansett purchased the Trading Post. One of his last acts as a Senator was to see that the I-40 ramps were put in place here. The Jack Rabbit Trading Post is still in the Blansett family, but these days it’s his granddaughter Cindy who runs the show.

driving usa america route 66, Nem Mexico asphalt

You may wonder how these far flung trading outposts ever attracted customers, especially in the days before the mass communications. Typically the owners of these establishments would take a road trip themselves, all 1,000 miles to Springfield, MO. On the way back, they dotted the roadside with billboards. The cumulative effect was such that by the time travelers arrived at a place like Joseph City their curiosity was so piqued they couldn't help but stop. Pioneers in their own way, the proprietors brought customers to their stores, and didn’t let being "in the middle of nowhere" stand in their way. Good for them.

Up until the 1960s, Winslow was the biggest town in northern Arizona, but it’s a familiar story, when the town was bypassed by the I-40 in the 1970s, shops and businesses began closing down and the population declined. In 1972 however, " Take it Easy ", the first hit single for those California rockers The Eagles came out, and immortalized the town in pop/rock consciousness with the lyric, "standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona".

About six miles south of I-40 exit 233 and three miles east of the evocatively named Two Guns we arrive at Meteor Crater, another one of Arizona’s remarkable holes in the ground. It’s the result of an asteroid crashing to earth at a speed of 26,000 miles, some 50,000 years ago. Some 550 feet deep and almost a mile in diameter, these days the crater is actually a privately owned tourist attraction. Its "Astronauts Hall of Fame" plays up the crater’s likeness to the moon, not without justification when you learn that Apollo astronauts used to practice their moon-walk at Meteor Crater.

driving usa america route 66, Nem Mexico asphalt

We ride on through the dense forestland southeast of Flagstaff, passing by the small seasonal stream of Walnut Creek, which over 1000s of years has engraved a 600 foot deep canyon into the local Kaibab limestone. As it flows east, it eventually joins with the Little Colorado River en route to the Grand Canyon. Over time, shallow caves were formed in the canyon walls. Way back in the 12th to 13th centuries the Sinagua Indians constructed many cave-dwellings high above the canyon floor, along the steep, easily defensible ledges.

Day 13 - Thursday, September 26, 2024 - miles: 161, kilometers: 259

driving usa america route 66

However sky-high your expectations, there’s nothing that really prepares you for the awesome reality of The Grand Canyon. There’s something humbling and transcendent about seeing it for the first time. You will be overawed by both its beauty and size. Its great age stands in stark relief to our relatively short time on Earth, and in its vast space, travelers can seek a respite from hectic 21st century life.

This enormous chasm was etched into the Colorado Plateau landscape over several millennia. Today it is enjoyed by those who come to explore its roads, hike its trails, or brave the Colorado River’s surging currents.

We will book a helicopter flight over the Grand Canyon, and experience the world famous IMAX movie Grand Canyon: 'The Hidden Secrets' at the park entrance.

Overnight in the town of Williams, with its quant downtown which is on the National Register of Historic Places. To this day, Williams the town is a perfectly preserved piece of small-town America, with its virtually unchanged main street and what’s more, a kind of small town life you just don’t find much anymore. They still hold a local beauty pageant in Williams, and store clerks will happily give you tips on where best to eat.

Day 14 - Friday, September 27, 2024 - miles: 194, kilometers: 311

Route 66 relaxation

As Route 66’s place in American history becomes the subject of ever more interest, Ash Fork’s place on the map seems assured. With all the stone quarries surrounding it, Ash Fork bills itself as "The Flagstone Capital of the World", It is also starting point for Crookton Road, which has the distinction of being one of the longest stretches of unbroken Route 66 highway in existence today.

Eventually we arrive to Seligman, which is a great little town, with clean streets and friendly people. There are, it has to be said, gift shops galore, most of them focused on Route 66 and American memorabilia, but there’s also a fine selection of biking clothing and accessories such as boots and leather jackets. Out on the street, there are vintage cars, colorfully dressed mannequins, and funny little street signs galore. We make a stop for a hearty breakfast at Frank's place. As you’ll see, it’s a one of a kind.

Grand Canyon Caverns have been a must-see Route 66 tourist spot ever since the 1930s. A maze of limestone caves some 21 stories underground that wend their way all the way to the Grand Canyon, these caverns were formed over the course of 35 million years. You could fit 3 football fields inside the parts of the caverns where we can take our tour.

On a smaller scale but interesting in its own way, is the old gas station at Hackberry. This former gas station and general store doesn't sell gas these days, but it does sell practically anything and everything associated with Old Route 66. Run by John and Kerry Pritchard, we recommend a walk behind the store, where they keep the really interesting memorabilia. That means old cars, sheds, garages, cactus, signs and more than we can list here. You can even take a carrot or two and feed the mules beyond the water garden.

Then if you like root beer, may we recommend Mr. D’z Kingman Route 66 Diner, proudly serving the finest root beer in the world. Root beer is in fact a kind of soda.

Beginning at the town of Kingman, Oatman Road is a winding two-lane road traversing 42 miles of Arizona's striking desert terrain. In combination with the byway's stirring Western history, the scenery creates an atmosphere that is unmistakably "Old West". In the surprisingly lively ghost town of Oatman, we’ll come across free-roaming burros (wild donkeys), the occasional gunfight (staged for your enjoyment), and a collection of scenic storefronts straight out of an old John Wayne movie.

Day 15 - Saturday, September 28, 2024 - miles: 215, kilometers: 354

Route 66 Roy's Cafe, driving usa america route 66

In the Mojave desert on Historic Route 66 we arrive at Roy’s in the town of Amboy, California. Roy's Motel/Café and its gas stop is about as iconic a lonely desert stop can get, partly because of its many appearances in movies. You could say the town of Amboy has it all: its own airport, garage, school, church and graveyard - and even a volcanic crater. Everything but a post office, so don’t expect to send any postcards from Amboy.

Bottle farm: Elmer has filled his yard with sculptures that resemble trees covered with bottles . They're actually pieces of pipe welded together, with hundreds of bottles loosely slipped over the ends so that they tinkle in the wind. There are lots of other odds and ends mixed in, including old signs, wheels, mechanical junk, all in all: a great stop, again!

Day 16 - Sunday, September 29, 2024 - miles: 114, kilometers: 183

On a palm-lined cliff at the edge of the Pacific Ocean in Santa Monica, only a few blocks away from the city’s landmark pier, old Route 66 came to its western terminus. The pier supports a small amusement park and a charmingly quaint carousel. There’s a beach-front walkway which goes from the pier to Venice Beach, the heart of hippy trippy L.A. But keep your eyes peeled, for right where Santa Monica Boulevard dead-ends at Ocean Boulevard, there’s a brass plaque which denotes the official end of the "Main Street of America". Your Route 66 tour finishes right on Santa Monica Pier under the sign "End of the Trail" . It’s time to return the vehicles and stay the last night in LA. Soon you are on your way back home, unless you'd like to visit Las Vegas or spend a few more days in California in which case just let us know so we can arrange extended bike hire and accommodation.

Day 17 - Monday, September 30, 2024 - Los Angeles (California)

Departure day. Please note: you can take a flight home the previous evening, in this case the last night hotel accommodation is reimbursed to you.

The Route for the Route 66 Dream Motorcycle Tours

Day 1: Chicago

Chicago

Welcome to Chicago. After the individual arrivals and the transfer from the airport to the hotel we will start off with a welcome drink and dinner and set the mood for our shared motorcycle tour.

Day 2: Chicago > Springfield, IL

Gemini Giant, Launching Pad, Wilmington

Early in the morning we will pick up our Harley-Davidson motorcycles at the rental station and after a few safety tips, our Route 66 adventure starts. Around midday we will reach Wilmington with the Gemini Giant, a large fiberglass figure of the 1960's era. After an obligatory stop at the Dixie Truckers Home, we will end our first day in Spingfield/Illinois which was for many years the chosen home city of Abraham Lincoln, the president of the United States during the civil war.

Day 3: Springfield, IL > St. Louis

Gateway Arch, St. Louis

Today we want to dedicate our day to the "Gateway to the West": the pioneer town St. Louis. The town's landmark is the more than 190 m high steel Gateway Arch. Inside, we will take trams to an observation platform to the top of the highest monument of the nation. The afternoon in St. Louis is free to your disposal, for dinner we will meet in downtown Lakelade's Landing.

Day 4: St. Louis > Springfield, MO

Meramec Caverns

We deliberately want to do without the unnecessary challenges of confusing streets in the city, bad road conditions and misleading signs to the "Mother Road". We will travel some distances of the tour on the Route 66 and others on the Interstate. Today's highlight and absolute must are the Meramec Caverns. The famous limestone caves have been a tourist classic since the beginning of the Route 66 and served the outlaw Jesse James as a welcome hiding place from his pursuers.

Day 5: Springfield, MO > Oklahoma City

Route 66 Round Barn

The motto of the day today is: ride, ride and ride namely through three states: Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma. The latter is known through countless thunderstorms, the particularly striking red earth and for all Route 66 fans the probably longest continuous route on the Highway 66.

Day 6: Oklahoma City > Amarillo

Pony Bridge, Canadian River

We will start our day with a real photo highlight: A bridge with 38(!) huge arches spanning the Canadian River. And the Route 66 museum in Clinton that we will visit is a memorial that is different to all others: each room is dedicated to a decade of the "Main Street of America". A further highlight on our tour is the next stop and overnight stay at the Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo.

Day 7: Amarillo > Santa Fe

Cadillac Ranch, Amarillo

We continue our adventure tour on the Route 66 to the legendary Cadillac Ranch. As a reminder of the golden days of the Route 66 ten Cadillac's are buried vertically into the ground. Next stop is Adrian, the geo-mathematical center of the old Route 66. This is as important as crossing the equator. Brunch at Russell's Travel Center with its world class Car Museum rounds up the morning. At the end of our eventful day, we will spend the night in historic Santa Fe.

Day 8: Santa Fe

St. Francis Cathedral, Santa Fe

Today is free to relax in downtown Santa Fe, buying souvenirs and enjoying cafe's and restaurants. A must to see is the St. Francis Cathedral next to the Plaza.

Day 9: Santa Fe > Gallup

Maggie's Diner, Madrid / Wild Hogs Movie

This morning we want to check out the original film location of Maggie's Diner from the cult movie "Wild Hogs" with John Travolta in Madrid. After taking a group picture our tour takes us past Mesas, cottonwood trees and continues on the gentle winding road to Laguna Pueblo where the Spaniards built the mission church, which we will visit. Just in time for dinner, we will reach the hotel El Rancho in Gallup after riding several more beautiful miles through Indian Territory. The heydays are gone, but there once was a time when famous Hollywood stars met up here. Ronald Reagan slept in room 103; Humphrey Bogart in room 213, Doris Day in room 109, Kirk Douglas stayed in 105, Gregory Peck in 111. The Marx brothers resided in room 118, John Wayne recovered in room 100 after a long days ride and for Hermann the German room 101 is regularly reserved for the night.

Day 10: Gallup > Chinle

Monument Valley

After a hearty breakfast in the "El Rancho" we will drive the former Route 666 to the North, straight through Navajo country. After some 95 appealing miles, we will arrive after passing through Shiprock and Teec Nos Pos to the Four Corners, the single point in the United States, where the boundaries of four states come together: Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Arizona. Another highlight on this motorcycle tour is Monument Valley. We will spend the night appropriately in the Navajo reservation near the Canyon de Chelly in Chinle.

Day 11: Chinle > Flagstaff

Standing on the corner in Winslow Arizona

Starting off in Chinle, the first stage leads us to the Petrified Forest National Park and the Painted Desert. The more interesting of the two natural wonders is the Petrified Forest, which was formed millions of years ago by a freak of nature. The northern part of the park, the Painted Desert, consists of sedimentary rocks that change color depending on the exposure to the sun going from red to orange to purple. On our journey towards the west ("Go West", is our phrase of the day!), we will pass the Wigwam Motel in Holbrook and cruise on to Winslow, Arizona to Winslow Corner, known from the song by the Eagles. Today's destination is Flagstaff which is located between the two Indian reservations of the Navajo and Hopi on the legendary Route 66. We will end the evening at the Museum Club that the locals call "The Zoo" and which is probably the best dance club between Oklahoma City and Los Angeles.

Day 12: Flagstaff > Seligman

Grand Canyon

Today's highlight is the gigantic Grand Canyon - if you wish, enjoy a spectacular helicopter flight. After lunch we will cruise over Williams to Seligman. Here the long loop of the old Route 66 begins right up to the Californian border. Even the very old street layout is navigable along this beautiful section. Arriving in Seligman, we will first visit the founder of the "Historic Route 66 Association" at the Route 66 Visitors Center. We will certainly have the opportunity to meet the "Guardian Angel", Angel Delgadillo and perhaps somebody might be in the mood to receive one of his famous barber shaves. By the way, in his barber shop, you can find many Route 66 souvenirs - a true paradise for bargain hunters. In the evening we will set up our sleeping quarters at a typical Route 66 motel in order to get to know something very simple and rustic.

Day 13: Seligman > Las Vegas

Las Vegas, Nevada

We will have breakfast today at Westside Lilo's Cafe, an original 66 restaurant owned by an expatriate German, who ensures that all the guests in Seligman are well fed. Through Kingman we continue on to Las Vegas / Nevada and directly on to the Las Vegas Boulevard. The accommodation is booked in the legendary The Mirage which is an ideal starting point for a stroll right on the Strip. Do whatever your heart desires: dine in the Hard Rock Cafe, visit one of the many world-class shows or dive into the nightlife of the city, the afternoon and evening are of course at your disposal.

Day 14: Las Vegas > Barstow

Route 66

After a long night, we will start today our "Desert Tour". We will roll past exclusive hotels on the last leg of the Las Vegas Boulevard, and then head off to our day trip in the direction of Barstow. From Needles, California we head back to our Route 66, many refer to this as being the most beautiful part of the route. Other stops are the Sahara Oasis and Roy's Cafe in Amboy. Before we arrive in Barstow we will turn a few miles north - if time allows it - to visit an old silver mine in the Mojave Desert in the ghost town of Calico. In the still inhabited and lovingly renovated original Western town over a thousand adventurers once sought their fortune. If you want to you can pick up your very own personal Western photo. A beautiful day and a beautiful trip ends in Barstow. By the way in 1886, the town was named after the president of the Santa Fe railroad company. Barstow also managed to end up in the refrain of the Route 66 classic "Get your kicks".

Day 15: Barstow > Santa Monica

Santa Monica Pier

The last day "on the road" starts today. From Barstow we will cruise the last miles on the Route 66 to Victorville and then take the Interstate straight to Los Angeles. After we have dropped off our Harley-Davidson motorcycles at the rental station, we will be transferred to Santa Monica Boulevard. Our Route 66 motorcycle tour ends here at the Pier of Santa Monica, where we will spend our last night near the promenade. During our final dinner we will reminisce about our dream journey.

Route 66 Motorcycle Tour

Tour Overview

Ride the mother road

Interested in riding the Mother Road, the famous Route 66 on a motorcycle? We can help make your dream come true. Whether you prefer a premium Guided Tour, a Self-Guided Tour with bike and hotels pre-booked, or a straight bike rental for this year or beyond, we can sort it for you. We've ridden Route 66 ourselves multiple times and have helped thousands of motorcyclists all over the world make their dreams of riding "The Mother Road" come true.

EagleRider’s World famous Route 66 motorcycle tour travels the original Route 66, known as the “Mainstreet of America” or “Mother Road”. 2400 miles long from Chicago to Los Angeles, it crosses three time zones and 8 States: Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. Route 66 has been the path of migrants, dreamers, desperadoes and an entire generation of vacationers discovering the way west. The 1950′s were the Route 66 glory days, when thousands of cars rode bumper to bumper behind each other to experience the Western frontier. Hotels, motels, gas stations, classic restaurants, and the “New” America sprang up everywhere. Much of Route 66′s classic roads, restaurants, gas stations, and nostalgic landmarks are preserved just as they were in the 1950’s. A motorcycle tour of Route 66 is about nostalgia, a journey into the past where a time long since past becomes tangible - you'll feel a part of it.

Riding Route 66 isn't technically challenging for a competent rider; that said, it's very easy to get lost. The road is no longer complete, with some sections dead ending in the middle of nowhere. The first time we rode 66 ourselves, we did a lot of cursing and doubling back as we tried to follow it. Like a living thing, 66 evolved over the years. America was growing; people were headed west, and as new sections were added to accommodate them, older portions of the road were sidetracked or abandoned. So Route 66 circa 1921 was very different than circa 1952. Which version of the road should you follow?

Well, EagleRider has perfected their tour over many years, enabling you to enjoy your ride and see the best of Route 66 without all the dead ends and turnarounds. On a fully Guided Tour, you just follow the leader and enjoy, while on a Self-Guided tour, you have detailed directions so you'll know exactly where you're going with no guesswork. Like exploring off the beaten track? Then do a bike hire, bring a map, and have at it! We've done it all three ways, and which way is "best"is really down to individual taste. It’s worth getting up early this morning to enjoy an early view of the St. Louis Arch and the Mississippi River before it’s time to hit the road again. Leaving the city in your mirrors, settle in to enjoy the rolling Missouri hills that make this area so beautiful and fun to ride in. You will stop and see the famous World’s Largest Rocking Chair in Fanning, wind your way on the twisting roads of Devil’s Elbow and stop at other Route 66 icons throughout the day. Route 66 Guided Motorcycle Tour

Day 5 – Oklahoma City

From Joplin, you’ll be heading west through the hills and horse country of Oklahoma. You’ll be crossing Miami, Claremore and Catoosa, home of the legendary Blue Whale before passing through Tulsa. On the ride today you’ll also be travelling through the reservations of several Native American tribes. This evening will be spent in Oklahoma City, the heart and soul of Route 66!

Route 66 Guided Motorcycle Tour

Day 6 – Amarillo

This morning you will travel along some of the oldest stretches of Oklahoma’s Route 66. You will ride along a section of the Chisholm Trail, which passes through Yukon and El Reno and stop at the amazing Route 66 Museum in Clinton. After lunch, cross the border into the Texas Panhandle, the southernmost portion of the Great Plains. route 66 tour motorcycle

Day 7 – Santa Fe

Today you leave Texas and are on your way into ‘The Land of Enchantment’, New Mexico. After passing through the world-famous Cadillac Ranch, you’ll stop at the midway point of Route 66 in Adrian, Texas! From here you enter the land of the Comanche Indians, where mesas, mountains, cactus and pines define the landscape as you rise up into the High Plains of Santa Fe in central New Mexico. Santa Fe is one of America’s oldest and most beautiful cities and will be your base for the next two nights.

Santa Fe, New Mexico

Day 8 – Santa Fe

Today is yours to rest and enjoy the distinctive flavour of this nearly 400-year-old city. The blend of cultures here becomes evident in the southwestern architectural style so closely associated with New Mexico’s capital city. Perhaps you would like to take a ride along the river valley to the old Native American Indian town of Taos, enjoy a sunrise hot air balloon ride, or maybe play cowboy for a day on a horse ride along a mountain or canyon trail. Santa Fe provides all these opportunities and more.

Discover Utah

Day 9 – Gallup

This morning you head south, down to Albuquerque, New Mexico’s largest city. Albuquerque is sprawling at the heart of New Mexico, where the main east-west road and rail routes cross both the Rio Grande and the old road south to Mexico. After crossing the Rio Grande, head west out into the open country and the hues of the Navajo wilderness. You are skirting mesas and bluffs on your way into Laguna. Further on, ride through Grants and along Cibola National Forest towards the famous Route 66 town of Gallup – an old railroad town and Indian stronghold. Enjoy your stay tonight with a host of fellow riders from around the world at one of the many biker friendly hotels in Gallup.

Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, USA

Day 10 – Grand Canyon

From Gallup it’s only about half an hour to the Arizona border. Once you enter Arizona enjoy a very scenic ride through the Petrified Forest, a fossilized prehistoric forest of giant trees that has been unearthed by erosion. Just west of Petrified National Forest you get to Holbrook and Winslow, two old Route 66 towns that are kept alive by transcontinental truckers. Tonight you will stay in Flagstaff, the northern Arizona community on historic Route 66 and is the regions hub for visits to the Grand Canyon.

Day 11 – Laughlin

For those looking to get a real ‘Bird’s Eye View’ of the Grand Canyon, a morning helicopter ride over the heart of the South Rim can be arranged for you. Leaving the Grand Canyon, you will pick up Route 66 again in Williams, Arizona before heading to stops in the famous Route 66 towns of Seligman, Hackberry and Kingman as well as Oatman, before arriving at your Laughlin hotel on the shores of the Colorado River.

Las Vegas Sign

Day 12 – Las Vegas

Today is a quick ride for a little detour to take in the incredible sights and sounds of Las Vegas! The journey this morning will take you through your first real taste of the Mojave Desert and across the famous Hoover Dam. Although Las Vegas is a 24-hour city, it’s worth trying to get a little bit of sleep because you’ll pick up Route 66 tomorrow right where you left it.

Riding on Route 66

Day 13 – Victorville

Cross the border into your final State on Route 66 – California! One thing is for sure – today is a day like no other as you traverse the Mojave Desert which offers some of the most dramatic scenery in Southern California. You can imagine what it must have been like for early Route 66 travellers making their way across this huge expanse of desert, dotted with Joshua Trees, cactus, volcanic rock and sand as you stop in the tiny ‘waystations’ of Amboy and Ludlow. Tonight, you will get the chance to celebrate your last night on the Mother Road.

Santa Monica Pier, California

Day 14 – Los Angeles

Today you’ll head off for your final destination – the end of the road on the Santa Monica Pier! To get there, however, you first get to ride the 66 miles of the Angeles Crest Highway through the mountainous terrain of the Angeles National Forest. This highway is considered one of the top motorcycle rides in southern California and rises to over 2300 metres. Next, you descend the Crest into the Los Angeles Basin and head towards the Pacific Ocean. Riders always have mixed emotions as they stand at the ‘End of the Trail’ sign on the Santa Monica Pier. There is a sense of joy and elation at having completed a journey most people only dream about and a sense of sadness at the thought of the ride having come to an end. Tonight, you can celebrate the miles you’ve ridden and the friends you’ve made as you all party together at a farewell dinner!

Road in Los Angeles

Day 15 – Farewell from Los Angeles

Today your exciting Route 66 trip will conclude in Los Angeles. You could of course choose to stay here a little longer if want to, or you could even move on to another exciting adventure, the choice is yours! However, if it is homeward bound for you, make your way to the airport for your scheduled flight back to the UK.

"The Greatest Trip of my life!"

Hello Wil and Erin. Just a short note to thank you for the ‘BEST VACATION EVER’. Both Brian and Andy were exceptionally professional and it is fair to say that that trip would not have been as good without the professional and friendly banter between the group and the guides. They were well able to cater for the differences in the group and this aided the holiday. The locations, lodgings and roads traveled matched and, sometimes, exceeded our expectations. On at least two occasions the accommodations were part of our dreams. ( Log cabin on a lake ) Read More

Day 2 – Los Angeles to Laughlin, Nevada

We wake up in California with our Harley-Davidson motorcycles familiar to us and waiting for us outside the hotel. The Ride Free Tour Team will give a safety briefing and answer any questions before we saddle up and hit the road. If you have never been part of a group ride on a Harley Davidson or touring bike before, you will find yourself grinning ear to ear as you realize that you have quickly become the object of envy for every pour soul stuck in their cars on the Los Angeles Freeway system. The only sound more satisfying than the roar of the engines of your fellow riders around you is the rumble of your own bike as you leave Los Angeles in your mirrors and the great American city gives way to lonely cacti and the inviting warmth of the California dessert. You have been waiting a long time for this day. Enjoy the feeling. After a lunch stop at a roadside diner we will open into the Nevada dessert before dropping down the valley towards the banks of the Colorado River and the small casino city of Laughlin, Nevada. After checking into the hotel, we’ll enjoy a group dinner before turning you lose to try your luck on the craps tables, slot machines and blackjack tables. Just remember to save few bucks because Las Vegas is just a few days away.

Day 5 – Zion to Viva Las Vegas

We will get an early start today so we can arrive in Las Vegas with plenty of time to cut loose. Leaving the cool air of Zion, we will drop down into The Valley of Fire, a moonscape of deep red clay earth and rock formations that open once again into the Nevada dessert. Here comes that ear to ear grin once again as Las Vegas starts to grow in the distance. The only sensation that can come close to matching the wonder of the Las Vegas cityscape at night is cruising down the Las Vegas Strip amidst the rumble of your fellow riders and newfound friends as we make our presence clearly known. What happens next? That’s all up to you. Las Vegas is, well, Las Vegas. Walk the famed Las Vegas strip at night, take in an amazing show or redeem yourself at one of the great casinos. The choice is yours. We’ll organize a group dinner and some fun for those of you who want to come along. For the rest…Viva Las Vegas!

Where It Starts & Ends: 12 Things You Can Still See On Old Route 66

  • Lou Mitchell's in Chicago is a classic American diner and the perfect place for travelers wondering where to start a Route 66 road trip.
  • The Gateway Arch in St. Louis is easily one of the most iconic landmarks on Route 66 to see.
  • Santa Monica Pier is the perfect final stop on Route 66 to celebrate completing a cross-country journey.

Lore and myth have been built around Old Route 66 and the people who traveled it. From quirky diners and kitschy motels to breathtaking natural wonders and landmarks, the stops along Old Route 66 encapsulate that classic Americana culture and invoke a strong sense of nostalgia.

Forever immortalized in movies, songs, and books, Route 66 continues to fascinate travelers from around the globe. It remains one of the most famous road trips in the United States , even though this road was technically decommissioned in the 1980s to make space for America's current interstate system. Luckily, many of the original stops on Route 66 from its heyday can still be visited. For adventures with their hearts set on precisely that, here are some of the things to still see on Route 66.

UPDATE: 2023/12/27 11:45 EST BY NOAH STAATS

Lou Mitchell's (Chicago, Illinois)

Get comfy at this classic american diner on route 66, serving hearty grub since 1923.

Though there are plenty of historic stops and fun attractions on Route 66 in Illinois , grabbing a meal at Lou Mitchell's is the hearty way to commemorate the journey. Route 66 officially starts in Chicago, and Lou Mitchell's diner has been there from the start, serving classic American diner fare to hungry drivers.

Colloquially known as "the first stop on the Mother Road," starting a journey on Route 66 with a big breakfast at Lou Mitchell's is a rite of passage. Since 1923, Lou Mitchell's has been in business, and the establishment quickly became an iconic Chicago diner for weary travelers looking for a hearty breakfast to start their Route 66 adventure.

The Gateway Arch (St. Louis, Missouri)

As one of the united states' most iconic landmarks, this arch stands over a midwest gem.

The iconic Gateway Arch in Missouri proudly stands as a monument to America's westward expansion. A feat of engineering, this colossal arch stands at 630 feet, welcoming visitors who are eager to explore the city of St. Louis .

Whether road-trippers are just passing by or riding the tram that takes passengers smoothly up the arch , the Gateway Arch is a classic American landmark that has long greeted those traveling through Route 66.

Meramec Caverns (Sullivan, Missouri)

See the underground caves under route 66 and learn about geological and native american history.

When passing through Missouri, road-trippers on Route 66 must stop at Meramec Caverns . This impressive series of underground caves is home to out-of-this-world rock formations and underground lakes.

Guided tours provide a fascinating glimpse into the area's geological formation and Native American history.

  • Address: 1135 Hwy W, Sullivan, MO 63080
  • Hours: Open daily from 9 AM to 4 PM
  • Tickets: $27

The Cadillac Ranch (Amarillo, Texas)

Super quirky, this is one of the most instagrammable stops on route 66.

Cadillac Ranch is a unique public art installation in Amarillo, Texas, that features 10 Cadillac cars half-submerged in the ground and covered in graffiti. Along with serving as an incredible photo opportunity, this spot on Old Route 66 is a notable example of American pop art and, to this day, continues to be one of the best stops on a Route 66 road trip .

Designed in the 1970s by a group of artists known as the Ant Farm, visitors are encouraged to climb on top of the cars and even add their own graffiti before continuing their journey along Route 66.

  • Address: 13651 I-40 Frontage Rd, Amarillo, TX 79124
  • Hours: Open 24 hours

Midpoint Café (Adrian, Texas)

Established in 1928, this cafe is route 66's midpoint at 1,139 miles from chicago and los angeles.

The Midpoint Café proudly declares itself as the midpoint of the original Route 66. At precisely 1,139 miles from both Chicago and Los Angeles, this restaurant was open 24 hours a day during the height of travel on Route 66.

Established in 1928, this diner served hungry travelers on Route 66. Its slogan was "When you're here, you're halfway there." Along with serving delicious pies and traditional American comfort food (and being the Old Route 66 halfway point), the Midpoint Café has an antique shop and souvenir store for Route 66 enthusiasts.

  • Address: 305 Historic Rte 66, Adrian, TX 79001
  • Hours: Open daily from 8 AM to 4 PM

Historic El Rancho Hotel (Gallup, New Mexico)

This famous route 66 hotel welcomed many of hollywood's golden age legends.

Built in 1936, the El Rancho Hotel was the place Hollywood stars stayed while filming on location in Gallup, New Mexico. From John Wayne and Humphrey Bogart to Katherine Hepburn and Joan Crawford, the El Rancho Hotel played host to countless film legends, forever linking it with the history of the Golden Age of cinema.

One of the most famous hotels on Route 66, the accommodation eventually became a popular stop on Old Route 66 for tourists. Its Western-style architecture and old Hollywood charm make it a sought-after lodging choice for travelers seeking a touch of Hollywood glamor mixed with a large dose of Old Western nostalgia.

  • Address: 1000 E Hwy 66, Gallup, NM 87301

Painted Desert (Arizona)

Stop off and soak up the otherworldly desert scenery.

Few places on Earth can beat the views found in the Painted Desert , which is probably why this stop just slightly off Route 66 was such a popular spot for road-trippers passing through Arizona.

This mesmerizing landscape, adorned with colorful layered rock formations, showcases nature's breathtaking beauty. The Painted Desert is a photographer's dream and worth the stop on Route 66.

  • Address: Painted Desert, AZ, 86031
  • Area: 93,500 acres
  • Length: 160 miles
  • Borders on: Little Colorado and Puerco Rivers

Petrified Forest National Park (Holbrook, Arizona)

Ancient trees, petroglyphs, a ruined village, and epic hikes year-round.

Known as one of Route 66's most natural stops, Petrified Forest National Park is well worth the trip. Here lies the old forest boasting ancient trees, critters, art, and trails to hike throughout the year.

Because Arizona remains fairly stable climate-wise, Petrified Forest National Park is a great year-round destination. It boasts the petroglyphs of Newspaper Rock and the ruined village of Puerco Pueblo. There is the Painted Desert Inn and the Rainbow Forest Museum here as well.

  • Established: December 9, 1962
  • Hours: Open daily from 8 AM to 6 PM
  • Entry Fee: $15-$25

Wigwam Village Motel (Holbrook, Arizona)

There's an authentic native american-style wigwam motel on route 66.

The Wigwam Village Motel in Holbrook allows guests to spend the night in cozy teepee-shaped cabins.

Interestingly, it's one of just three Wigwam Villages left in the country, and it is a nostalgic throwback to the whimsical motor courts and unique accommodations that were once synonymous with the Route 66 experience.

  • Address: 811 W Hopi Dr, Holbrook, AZ 86025

Debate over the cultural appropriation surrounding these Wigwam Villages exists. However, some of the remaining motels have tried in recent years to educate guests about these villages' history and place in American history as a roadside attraction.

Twin Arrows Trading Post (Flagstaff, Arizona)

A perfect spot to pull off route 66 along flagstaff and winslow.

For those between Flagstaff and Winslow, Arizona, visiting the Twin Arrows Trading Post is worth the trip. This is the perfect place to pull off Route 66 and snap a shot, as there are two massive arrows positioned in the ground (it's one of the many quirky roadside attractions on Route 66!).

What was once a fairly busy area in the Arizona desert, Twin Arrows Trading Post now currently sits pretty quiet, as much of this route does.

  • Address: Flagstaff, AZ 86004

There are many other scenic small towns in Arizona worth seeing for those looking to extend their trip or check out a few detours while driving Route 66.

Oatman Ghost Town (Oatman, Arizona)

An old mining town of the wild west where wild burros roam the streets.

Once a bustling mining town, Oatman is now one of the many ghost towns on Route 66 to visit; it's completely frozen in time, providing travelers with a glimpse into the past. The town of Oatman is the real deal; it comes complete with saloons, wooden sidewalks, and Western-themed shops.

Oatman isn't one of the amazing historic ghost towns of the American West with nothing going on, though; visitors can also stop to pet the beloved local burros that roam the streets or enjoy one of the daily gunfight reenactments that pay homage to the long-gone days of the Old Wild West.

  • Address: Oatman, AZ, 86433

Santa Monica Pier (Santa Monica, California)

Amusement park rides, hotels, restaurants, and more await at the end of route 66.

There's no better way to end a journey across Old Route 66 than by gazing into the waters of the Pacific Ocean. Indeed, visiting the Santa Monica Pier is the perfect end for road-trippers to celebrate completing their cross-country journey.

The Santa Monica Pier isn't just the penultimate of California's Route 66 portion; it's an important historic landmark that features a magnificent view of the Pacific Ocean, a vibrant amusement park, and numerous restaurants and hotels where travelers can unwind. The ultimate family-friendly stop on Route 66, there are tons of exciting things to do on the Santa Monica Pier for all ages.

EagleRider's world-famous Route 66 motorcycle tour travels the original Route 66, known as the "Mainstreet of America" or the "Mother Road". Stretched over 2400 miles from Chicago to Los Angeles, Route 66 crosses three time zones and 8 states: Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. Route 66 has been the path of migrants, dreamers, desperadoes, and an entire generation of holidaymakers discovering the way west. The 1950s were the glory days of Route 66, when thousands of cars rode bumper to bumper to experience the Western frontier. Hotels, motels, service stations, classic restaurants, and the "New" America sprouted up everywhere. Much of Route 66's classic roads, restaurants, service stations, and nostalgic landmarks are preserved just as they were in the 1950s. The famous and nostalgic Route 66 is like a road created in heaven for motorcycle touring. In simple terms, this is the guided tour of America!

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

Now that we’ve covered what to do in Moscow in 2 days, if you’re able to spend more time in the city you’re going to need more attractions to fill your time. Here are a few more really cool things to do in Moscow we recommend!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

  • Hear the timeline of the ‘space race’ from the Russian perspective
  • This museum is fun for both adults and children!
  • Admission is USD $4.00

The Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics is a museum dedicated to space exploration! The museum explores the history of flight, astronomy, space exploration, space technology, and space in the arts. It houses a large assortment of Soviet and Russian space-related exhibits, and the museum’s collection holds approximately 85,000 different items!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

The museum does an excellent job of telling the full story of the exciting space race between the USSR and the US! It highlights the brightest moments in Russian history and humanity and is very interesting and fun for all ages!

If you’re a fan of space or just curious about gaining insight into Russia’s fascinating history of space exploration, make sure to add this to your 3 day itinerary in Moscow!

The Alexander Garden

  • A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
  • Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .
