Brouwersgracht
Jordaan & the West
Pretty as a Golden Age painting, the Brewers Canal took its name from the many breweries located here in the 16th and 17th centuries. Goods such as leather, coffee, whale oil and spices were also stored and processed here in giant warehouses, such as those with the row of spout gables that still stand at Brouwersgracht 188–194.
It's a great place to stroll and to see the waterborne action on King's Day .

Hotel Brouwer
Old Center, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
- Full Review
- Picturesque canal-front setting in UNESCO World Heritage site
- Inner canal ring location three blocks from Centraal Station
- Quirky, Old Amsterdam atmosphere and design touches
- Simple, clean rooms with views over the canal
- Small elevator (in addition to charming spiral staircase)
- Hotel does not accept credit cards
- Interiors could use some sprucing up
- Rooms are prone to internal and external noise
Bottom Line
The Hotel Brouwer's quirky and unpretentious Old Amsterdam charm makes it easy to overlook its slightly dated and ramshackle elements. Its pretty canal-front setting is tough to beat, and the location is great for exploring the city on foot. Rooms are on the creaky side, and suffer from some noise issues, but are clean and comfortable and offer lovely canal views. Breakfast is simple and sufficient. Guests will be hard pressed to find a bed and breakfast in the area much cheaper, though the nearby Heren B&B has smarter style.

Oyster Hotel Review
Quirky old amsterdam canal-front hotel.
Hotel Brouwer is set in a relatively large Amsterdam canal-front townhouse dating back to the 17th century, once the residence of a sea captain. It has been run as a hotel by the Brouwer family since 1917. The bed and breakfast has kept the ambience of an old-fashioned and slightly ramshackle Dutch home, from the faded, weatherworn sign outside to mismatched wooden furniture and creaky wooden floorboards. The general atmosphere is one of charming, quirky dishevelment. Adding to the Old Amsterdam ambience, traditional Delft-blue tiles adorn reception walls and an older stairwell, while a modern spiral staircase winds up through the building.
Canal-front setting a few blocks from Centraal Station
Situated on a pretty street overlooking Singel canal (the inner ring of the Canal Ring, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site) the hotel is within walking distance of most of Amsterdam's tourist attractions. Centraal Station is just a few blocks away, while the bustling Dam Square is a five-minute walk. Trams are also available a block away to make the short journey to the Museum District and Vondlepark to the south.
Simple, clean but old-fashioned rooms with canal views
All eight rooms are named after Dutch artists, and are decorated in simple old-fashioned styling with traditional wooden furnishings and works of their artistic namesake on the walls. Rooms are light on amenities but Wi-Fi is free and all provide fabulous views over the canal. Clean bathrooms are no-frills with simple tiled walls and generic toiletries. Walls are on the thin side, so some noise leaks between rooms, and floorboards are creaky.
Free daily breakfast in traditional Dutch surrounds
A simple breakfast is included in the room rate and served in the surrounds of a traditional Dutch kitchen. Unusual for this type of property, there is a small elevator to the floors, though it can't be used after 11pm. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout.

A leisurely stroll along Brouwersgracht canal
- May 25, 2023 May 29, 2023
Amsterdam is known for its beautiful canals and charming architecture, and one of the most picturesque canals is the Brouwersgracht. This historic waterway is in the Jordaan neighbourhood, famous for its trendy cafes, boutique shops, and vibrant nightlife. In this blog post, we will explore the history and attractions of Amsterdam’s Brouwersgracht.
The Brouwersgracht is a 17th-century canal built during the Dutch Golden Age, a period of great economic and cultural prosperity in the Netherlands. The canal was named after the many breweries along its banks, and it served as an important transportation route for beer barrels and other goods. Today, the Brouwersgracht is a designated national monument.
One of the main attractions of the Brouwersgracht is its beautiful canal houses, which feature various styles of ornate gables, large windows with colourful shutters, and beautiful facades. These houses were built by wealthy merchants and traders who wanted to show off their wealth and status.
Former historic warehouses and canal houses have been converted into stylish apartments, offices, shops, art galleries, restaurants, and other businesses.
Another notable feature of Brouwersgracht is the many houseboats moored along the canal. These boats are a unique feature of Amsterdam’s canals, adding to the city’s character and charm. Many of the houseboats on Brouwersgracht are decorated with plants, flowers, and other decorations, making them even more charming.
One of the highlights of Brouwersgracht is the view of the Westerkerk, a beautiful church that dominates the skyline of the Jordaan district. The church’s tower is visible from many points along the canal and provides a stunning photo backdrop.
Another highlight of the Brouwersgracht is the many bridges crossing the canal. The most famous bridge is the Brouwersgracht Bridge, built in the 19th century and decorated with wrought-iron railings and lanterns. The bridge is a popular spot for taking photos and enjoying the view of the canal and its surroundings. Other notable bridges include the Reestraat Bridge, a wooden deck and a brick arch, and the Palmgracht Bridge, adorned with sculptures of dolphins and sea horses.
Visitors to the Brouwersgracht can also enjoy a stroll along the streets on either side of the canal. The towpath, lined with trees and benches, offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city centre and provides a great vantage point for admiring canal houses and boats. In the summer, many residents and visitors enjoy picnics and barbecues alongside the canal.
In conclusion, the Brouwersgracht is a must-see destination for anyone visiting Amsterdam. Its historic canal houses, picturesque bridges, and scenic towpath make it one of the city’s most charming and photogenic spots. Whether interested in history, architecture, or simply taking a leisurely stroll, the Brouwersgracht has something to offer everyone.

Im planning on staying at the Hotel Brouwer, but I have a few questions I can't seem to get answered through email with the front desk. I know you can't use credit card, so how do you garuntee reservation? I can only assume you pay when you get there. Do they accept anything other than cash? I've never booked a hotel without a credit card, so I'm a little lost. Thanks in advance.
Interesting enough they don't require a credit card guarantee. One of my best friends stays there quite often. He really feels at home there. He pays cash for his room.
My husband and I are staying there the first week of April. It looks like a wonderful hotel with a great ambiance, and we can't wait to get there. I was wondering the same thing about paying for the room, though. I hate to carry that much cash over there, but our ATM card will only allow us to withdraw a certain amount each day. So we'd have to start withdrawing the cash for the room a coupla days before we left, unless we took enough with us. Did you find anything else out about that?
I've stayed there twice. They're very flexible about when you pay. You can pay each day if you wish, or at the beginning, or when you check out. But only cash. ATMs are everywhere, so withdrawing what you need each day isn't a big deal. And on my last trip 2 weeks ago I found that credit cards are pretty widely accepted at restaurants, museums, etc., so there's really no need for big wads of cash. Have a fabulous time!
Thanks, Maineiac! I appreciate the info! Hope your trip was fantastic!

With five days in Amsterdam you'll go beyond the basics and see some of this capital city's hidden delights.
