FAQs About best giant causeway tour from belfast

Most Giant’s Causeway tours from Belfast are full-day trips, lasting approximately 8 to 10 hours. This includes travel time to and from the Causeway, as it’s about a 2-hour drive each way. These tours often include stops at other scenic locations along the coast, so you get to see more of Northern Ireland’s stunning landscapes.

The weather at the Giant’s Causeway can be unpredictable, so it’s best to dress in layers and wear comfortable, sturdy shoes for walking on uneven surfaces. A waterproof jacket is also a good idea, as rain showers can come and go quickly. Don’t forget to bring a hat and sunscreen on sunny days, as the coastal wind can be deceptive.

Many tours from Belfast to the Giant’s Causeway include the entry fees in their price, but this can vary between tour operators. It’s important to check what’s included in your tour package. Entry to the Giant’s Causeway itself is free, but some tours include additional attractions like the Giant’s Causeway Visitor Centre, where there is a fee for entry. The Giant’s Causeway is one of my favourite places to visit in Northern Ireland. It’s raw beauty is awe-inspiring – it’s a totally unmissable stop when visiting Belfast! Want to know how you can experience this incredible place for yourself? Here’s how to get from Belfast to the Giant’s Causeway, by car, train, bus and tour.

The Giant’s Causeway is one of Northern Ireland’s most remarkable and popular sites. With over 300,000 tourists visiting every year!

It’s an area of rock formations which consist of around 40,000 interlocking basalt hexagon shaped columns forming huge stepping stones – reaching as high as 39 feet!

Many of the columns fit together so tightly that when you view it from the cliff edge, it looks like a man made street!

This incredible UNESCO World Heritage Site is surrounded by the wild North Atlantic Ocean and a landscape of dramatic cliffs which has inspired artists and stirred scientific debate for centuries now.

How was the Giant’s Causeway formed?

There has been much scientific debate about this over the years. However, scientists believe that the honey-comb pattern of basalt columns was formed during a volcano eruption over 60 million years ago.

The thick lava ran down the cliff face so quickly that it dried and contracted into the distinctive shapes and step-like columns you see today.

This also explains why they form by the cliff edge and disappear right into the sea.

Why is it called ‘the Giant’s Causeway’?

According to local mythology, the Giant’s Causeway wasn’t created by a volcano but by a giant named Finn McCool! Which admittedly is a much cooler story and just adds to the mystery of the causeway I think!

The story goes that Finn had an issue with a Scottish giant who lived 25 miles across the sea. But as he wasn’t a good swimmer. So he decided to use the materials that the volcanoes had left behind to build a causeway to Scotland.

He called it, “The Giant’s Causeway”.

Where is the Giant’s Causeway?

The Giant’s Causeway is just over an hour’s drive North of Belfast in Bushmills, Northern Ireland.

What makes it so special?

I didn’t know anything about the Giant’s Causeway before I visited Belfast and I was completely awestruck when I got there!

The unique rock formations, dramatic cliffs and crashing waves makes the Giant’s Causeway quite the sight to behold!

There are some experiences in life that you know are going to be amazing and you know you’ll never forget. But I had no idea the Giant’s Causeway would have such an effect on me.

There’s nowhere else like it on Earth – it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

How do I get from Belfast to the Giant’s Causeway by tour?

Getting to the Giant’s Causeway via a guided tour is the easiest and most convenient way in my opinion! One of the best things about it is you don’t have to drive or navigate.

As an inexperienced driver I personally find it a lot less stressful to book a guided tour!

It’s also a lot cheaper. A day trip on a guided tour may cost you around £30 on average? However, renting a car for the day, plus petrol (especially in this economy!) would set you back a lot more.

I also enjoy asking the guides lots of extra questions and meeting new people!

When I visited the Giant’s Causeway, it was with McCombs Coach Travel for a Game of Thrones Tour – which was so much fun!

However, there are several different tours from Belfast that cover the Giant’s Causeway. Here are a few I would recommend:

– From Belfast: Giant’s Causeway Fully Guided Day Trip – combining the Giant’s Causeway and Northern Ireland’s most stunning destinations. These include: the Cushendun Caves, Carnlough Harbour, the Dark Hedges as well as Carrickfergus and Dunluce Castles.

– From Belfast: Game of Thrones and Giant’s Causeway Day Tour – a great option that combines a visit to the Giant’s Causeway with all the most iconic Game of Thrones filming locations. These include: the Cushendun Caves, Carnlough Harbour, Ballintoy Harbour and the Dark Hedges.

– From Belfast: Giant’s Causeway and Titanic Belfast Tour – combining the Giant’s Causeway and some Game of Thrones filming locations. This tour also includes coverage of the history of Titanic and free entry to the museum in Belfast.

– From Belfast: Giant’s Causeway Guided Tour with Admissions – a great option that combines visits to the Giant’s Causeway, Carnlough, Dunluce Castle, Carrickfergus Castle and the Bushmills Distillery. Here you will learn more about the oldest licensed whiskey distillery in the world.

– From Belfast: Hop-on Hop-off Northern Ireland Bus Tour – see Northern Ireland’s most popular sights via the convenience of a hop-on hop-off bus tour. Choose from a 1-day, 2-day, or 3-day pass and create your own itinerary and adventure. These include popular sights such as the famous Carrick-A-Rede Bridge, the Giant’s Causeway and Game of Thrones filming locations.

How do I get to the Giant’s Causeway by car?

Travelling to the Giant’s Causeway by car from Belfast is super easy.

On average it takes about an hour and 15 minutes to reach the causeway via the M2 motorway. But it’s pretty much a straight line drive – so simple to navigate!

However, if you travel the longer more scenic coast road, you’ll get to stop at the famous Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge. You’ll also be able to visit Carrickfergus Castle and Dunluce Castle en route.

The coast route takes about half an hour longer but the gorgeous scenery is well-worth the extra travel time!

The main car park adjacent to the causeway’s visitor centre is reserved for members and ticket holders. However, there is car parking available at 60 Causeway Road for the use of visitors, which costs £10 per car.

Alternatively, there is free parking at the Bushmills Train Station. There you can then board a short two mile train to the Giant’s Causeway.

Google map of the route to Giant's Causeway from Belfast

How do I get to the Giant’s Causeway by public transport?

Getting to the Giant’s Causeway by public transport is a bit more challenging than by car or tour but is totally doable!

It takes between two to three hours and you have two options to choose from:

Option one: take the 221 bus to Aird from Belfast’s Europa Buscentre and get off at the ‘Giants Causeway – The Nook’ stop. From there it is around 30 minutes to walk to the Giant’s Causeway.

This route will take you just over two hours. However, the bus itself is only an hour and a half so isn’t that much longer than if you decided to drive.

Option two: take the train from Yorkgate Train Station to Coleraine Train Station (which is one hour and 16 minutes). Then walk one minute to the Coleraine Buscentre and take the 402 bus to Ballycastle to the ‘Giants Causeway – The Nook’ stop. From there it is a 30 minute walk to the Giant’s Causeway.

This route will take you just under three hours. However, I would only recommend it if you planned to see other landmarks along the way in Coleraine for example.

Otherwise I would just take the bus straight there from Belfast’s Europa Buscentre.

Legend has it that the columns are remnants of a causeway constructed by a giant. According to the tale, the Irish giant Fionn mac Cumhaill (Finn MacCool), from Gaelic mythology’s Fenian Cycle, was challenged to a fight by the Scottish giant Benandonner. Fionn accepted the challenge and constructed the causeway across the North Channel to facilitate their meeting. In one version of the legend, Fionn emerges victorious over Benandonner. Alternatively, realizing the immense size of his opponent, Fionn hides from Benandonner. His wife, Sadhbh, aids in the deception by disguising Fionn as a baby and placing him in a cradle. When Benandonner sees the size of the “baby,” he assumes that its father, Fionn, must be a giant among giants, and flees back to Scotland in terror, destroying the causeway behind him to prevent pursuit. Interestingly, across the sea on the Scottish isle of Staffa, there are identical basalt columns, part of the same ancient lava flow, at Fingal’s Cave, suggesting a possible influence on the story.

The ownership and management of the Giant’s Causeway and Causeway Coast World Heritage Site are under the responsibility of the National Trust. This site ranks among the most sought-after tourist destinations in Northern Ireland, with over 998,000 visitors recorded in 2019

Are you looking to go from Belfast to Giants Causeway? Make sure to use this road trip itinerary to see these six other amazing spots along the way!

When planning my Ireland and Northern Ireland road trip itinerary, one day kept pulling me in more and more. I was seriously pumped about one specific day in particular and it was this day. The day we drove from Belfast to Giants Causeway . We had probably one of the most intense itinerary-filled days and it was exhausting but it was one of the most gorgeous sites I’ve ever seen…over and over again.

Belfast to Giants Causeway Tour

Lonely Planet announced that the best region to see in 2018 is Belfast and the Causeway Coast. As soon as I heard, I thought “well, how amazing is that that I just got home from there.” My second thought was I’m not surprised at all. Everything about this route and region is amazing and a must-see.

Now, don’t just go straight from Belfast to Giants Causeway though. While I know you’re excited to see this magnificent UNESCO site (the only one in Northern Ireland ), just realize that sometimes, just sometimes, it really is about the journey and not the destination.  I’ve got six great stops you should make along the way and then one just past Giant’s Causeway for good measure.

How far is Belfast from Giants Causeway?

The distance between Belfast and Giant’s Causeway is 61 miles.

How to Get from Belfast to Giants Causeway?

It’s not necessary to take a Giants Causeway tour because it is very easy to visit independently no matter what your preferred method of transportation.

Traveling by rental car in Ireland and Northern Ireland is my favorite way to experience it. It allows for flexibility and the capability to change your schedule and see everything and anything you want.

By train and bus

Taking the train and bus from Belfast to Giants Causeway is a great option!

  • Take the train from Belfast’s Victoria Street to Coleraine which runs every hour Monday-Saturdays and less on Sundays.
  • Upon arrival in Coleraine, turn left into the bus center.
  • Take bus 170 or 402 which run regularly from Coleraine to the Giants Causeway

Every Game of Thrones fan will immediately recognize this location. However, even if you’re not a fan of Game of Thrones, don’t miss this spot. The Dark Hedges is comprised of a long avenue of beech trees that were planted by the Stuart family in the eighteenth century.

They are one of the most photographed spots in Northern Ireland and can you blame the people?!

Sustainability Note:   Due to the ever-increasing interest in the Dark Hedges, more and more people are visiting every day. In order to protect these trees and their roots, please park in the designated pull off (right before you get to the lane).

Belfast to Giants Causeway Stop # 2 – Ballycastle, Northern Ireland

Not going to lie – this was a food stop. I found Ursa Minor when searching for vegan options in Northern Ireland. Since we didn’t have many options along the Causeway Coast, we decided to make an extra stop here and I’m so glad we did. Not only is the food exceptional and the cafe super atmospheric, but the little town of Ballycastle is really adorable.

At Ursa Minor, I got the sourdough toast which comes with locally made jam and some kind of soup that was just the perfect amount of spicy. Ursa Minor is known for their sourdough bread which is what they started doing in the beginning – just make loaves of sourdough bread – so now everything comes with bread. And, I love bread.

The atmosphere of this place quickly landed it as one of my favorite coffee shops/cafes in Ireland.

I’m going to let you in on a little secret.

I think this was my favorite spot in all of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Sure, there were other places that were just as beautiful but something about this place really resonated with me. Maybe it was because it was not planned. We were literally driving along towards the next stop when we saw a sign that said Kinbane Head and it led down a very small “two-lane” road. So, we turned around and decided to check it out. Maybe it was because it was the first day that I felt something deep inside that said: “Oh, you are definitely in Ireland.” Maybe it’s because I had never heard of it before, there were no other people, no entrance fees – so it felt like mine.

Regardless of the reason, this place is magical and I’m going to write a whole post about it. I decided that just now.

Belfast to Giants Causeway Stop # 4 – Carrick-A-Rede Rope Bridge History

belfast to giants causeway

Definitely one of the most well known Northern Ireland locations, Carrick-A-Rede rope bridge is definitely worth a visit. The rope bridge connects the mainland to the tiny island of Carrickarede. The rope bridge has plenty of history and wasn’t always just a tourist attraction but now it’s one of the best pedestrian suspension bridges in the world . Salmon fishermen have been building bridges to the island for almost 400 years and over the years, the bridge has evolved. If you think crossing it now is daunting, imagine crossing it when there was only one handrail and large gaps in the steps.

On a good day, you can actually see Scotland from the island as well as three large caves below. For fun, you can purchase a certificate after you complete for £1!

Belfast to Giants Causeway Stop #5 – Ballintoy Harbour

belfast to giants causeway

Located down a very steep and narrow road on the Causeway Coast, sits Ballintoy Harbour . This was another unexpected place I fell quickly in love with. I only knew that it was the Game of Thrones filming location for Pyke and the Iron Islands and that alone left me wanting to visit. However, the landscape left me stunned. You can immediately smell the ocean the moment you open the car door and have a view of lush sand, shells, seaweed and varying rock formations jutting out of the beach and harbour.

I’ve never seen a more unique beach or harbour in my life. If I lived here, I could definitely see myself coming here often to read, write or just stare off into the ocean.

Belfast to Giants Causeway Stop #6 – Giants Causeway

belfast to giants causeway

Probably the most anticipated stop on the Causeway Coast is the Giant’s Causeway. I typically am not drawn to touristy attractions or overcrowded areas which is why Kinbane Castle and Ballintoy Harbour really connected with me. However, I completely get the draw and appeal of Giant’s Causeway. It truly is a magical place and entirely unique.

Giant’s Causeway is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the only one in Northern Ireland. The interlocked basalt columns are a result of an ancient volcanic eruption. There is, however, a more fun explanation and it goes a little something like this…

The columns are what is remaining of a causeway built by Finn MacCool (Fionn mac Cumhaill) – an Irish giant from Gaelic mythology. Finn was challenged to fight a Scottish giant (as giants do) and Finn built the causeway so the two giants could meet. There are a few versions of how the story ends one being that Finn hides from the Scottish giant once he saw his size so Finn and his wife disuised him as a baby. When the Scottish giant saw the baby and figured that his father must be extremely giant considering the size of the baby, he fled back to Scotland. Along the way, he destroyed the causeway behind him.

Across the sea, you can find identical basalt columns at Fingal’s Cave on the Scottish isle of Staffa which could be a part of the reason behind the legend. So, volcanic eruption from millions and millions years ago or giants fighting – you be the judge!

Belfast to Giants Causeway Bonus Stop – Dunluce Castle

belfast to giants causeway

Now, technically this was supposed to be an itinerary from Belfast to Giant’s Causeway but there are two more spots that, in my opinion, are definitely worth it. Dunluce Castle is only 9 minutes down the road and shouldn’t be missed. Trust me, you can burn out on castles in Ireland but I truly enjoyed this one.

Dunluce Castle has a history all the way back to the 13th century. The castle itself is accessible via a bridge from the mainland and the castle is surrounded by extremely steep drops all the way around. The views from the castle were amazing and I could just imagine myself living here hundreds of years ago. I was seriously born in the wrong era.

Dunluce Castle is another GOT filming location .

Belfast to Giants Causeway Bonus Stop #2 – Downhill Demesne + Mussenden Temple

belfast to giants causeway

The other stop is about 45 minutes from Giant’s Causeway and about 35 minutes from Dunluce Castle but I definitely recommend it as well! Downhill House is a mansion that was built in the 18th century but was mostly destroyed in 1851 due to a fire. The mansion was built for Frederick the 4th Early of Bristol and Lord Bishop of Derry (or more popularly known as ‘the Earl Bishop’).

The temple was not really a temple at all and was constructed as a library modeling the Temple of Vesta in Rome. It sits on the cliff’s edge overlooking Demesne Beach.

Oh, and it’s another Game of Thrones filming location .

I have been a long time geology nerd so Giant’s Causeway has been on my radar for some time now. I really liked how you made it a road trip. I guess I have been looking at too many social media posts because I never imagined tour buses showing up. I think the beauty of the country would be best enjoyed in solitude, so avoiding buses would be key to our enjoyment.

' src=

Look at these Game of Thrones scenes Ashley. Love it. The dark hedges are forboding; make for TV and movies. I like seeing that with all the increased traffic in the area after its GOT game that folks are focusing on keeping things sustainable. Gotta take care of the real stars of the show; that stunning natural scenery. Thanks for sharing.

' src=

I agree with you – I like to visit the big tourist attractions because they are popular for a reason, but I often really connect with the lesser known spots. These spots all look interesting but Kinbane castle and the rope bridge look especially awesome!

' src=

The scenery is absolutely fantastic! I think Ireland is one of the most beautiful countries and that was before I saw your pictures. I’d love to take this trek and can’t think of a more quaint place to stop for coffee and a bite to eat than Ursa Minor.

' src=

OMG YES I recognize some of these! I wanna travel to Ireland just to check more Game of Thrones film locations off my list.

' src=

You saw all that in one day?! Wow! All these sites are too beautiful that they look unreal, especially the Dark Hedge and Giant’s Causeway. I will probably stop there for an hour just to take photos 😛

' src=

I’d love to see the Giants Causeway myself one day soon. Road trips in Ireland and Northern Ireland look so fun and so many beautiful sights to see.

' src=

What a great drive, but I don’t think I would want to do it in one day! I’d like to hang out at Ursa Minor for a few hours at least! And those trees, wow! My hubby would definitely want to do a sunrise or sunset shoot there!

' src=

Ireland looks like a dream, and you lucked out with great weather! Had no idea about the Lonely Planet designation, way to be ahead of the curve!

Arriving at approx. 1:00pm , the next stop on our tour of Northern Ireland is the House of Greyjoy from Game of Thrones.

This iconic historical castle dates back over 500 years and its location on the cliff edge of the north Atlantic make it one of the most dramatic settings in Europe. The castle has been frequently used over the years in many movies most recently the tv series the Game of Thrones. The admittance to visit and peruse the castle and its grounds for 35 minutes is included in the ticket price.

Dunluce Castle was built by the McQuillan family around 1500. It is located on the top of sheer-sided cliffs 100 feet above the ocean – the perfect location for one of the Great Houses of Westeros. The Castle’s dramatic history of violence, intrigue and rebellion is matched by the scandal and betrayal committed by the Greyjoys in Game of Thrones.

  • Alexandra McDonald ★★★★★ a week ago What a fantastic and professional tour company! This Wild Rover tour from Dublin to the Cliffs was the perfect choice for my 7 year old and me. We were visiting Dublin for a long weekend and the Cliffs had been a bucket list item, and not stressing about driving was my main reason for booking. I reserved on their website directly (a fair price!) and went to the meeting point that day at 7am. They have … More large, comfortable coaches with their logo. The Cliffs are magnificent and a must-see! The driver Garry and our guide Rory were so professional and entertaining. Rory pointed out landmarks as we drove, gave us a comprehensive history of Ireland, and had such a lovely personality all day! We made a rest stop on the route there and back (no WC on the bus). We returned back at 7:30pm and it was such a great (albeit long) day. Furthermore, Rory came through the cabin as we were arriving back in Dublin to answer any personal questions we had about the area, and took a few minutes to recommend local restaurants, pubs, and experiences that we would find useful. Absolutely recommend!!
  • Bob Carey ★★★★ ☆ in the last week Our tour guide Barbara was great. She was very entertaining and informative. The Giants Causeway was beautiful and breathtaking. My only disappointment was the Black Cab tour. Our driver was not aware of our passengers, at one point we had to get back in the cab to go no more than 150 feet…. He presented the time of the Troubles from his perspective as a youth growing up. Otherwise, I highly recommend … More Wild River.
  • Joshua ★★★★★ 2 weeks ago We found this trip well worth the price to experience and see some of "real" Ireland. Kilkenny was a great little city with plenty of shops, restaurants, and history to explore. Glendalough was such a fantastic time. From the history, to exploring the grounds, to the picturesque walk to the upper lake, it was perfect! The sheep farm was a great experience as well, the whole family enjoyed … More it! We were three adults, a 13 year old, a 5 year old, and a 2 year old. All enjoyed it and had fun! Tour operators Elisa and Peter were great!
  • Mary Norton ★★★★★ a week ago We truly enjoyed this tour! The driver and host were so knowledgeable and entertaining. The visit to Kilkenny was grand. The experience in the mountains, holy land and sheep farm were all beautiful and lovely! You need to do this tour!
  • Christina McElroy ★★★★★ a week ago We had the most amazing trip to the Cliffs with Yvonne and Steven. She was so funny and knowledgeable, I would follow her anywhere!! Such a wonderful tour and tour guide. Truly enjoyed our visit. Eventho it was foggy it was still beautiful 😍
  • Shauna ★★★★★ 2 weeks ago My family took this tour and it was wonderful! We loved the Titanic museum and the history there. We also loved seeing Dunluce Castle and the gorgeous views there. Then we ended tour at the causeway, which was also amazing. Our tour guide, Una was wonderful and gave great information for the area. We would recommend this tour and company, and hope to be back soon for another tour!
  • Kevin D. ★★★★★ 3 weeks ago This was an outstanding trip. Our Guide Neil and driver Brian were excellent. Neil was very knowledgeable, fun and gave us tons of information and tips. Kilkenny is a wonder city and Kilkenny Castle and grounds were absolutely stunning. The Wicklow mountains offered some great views of the Irish Countyside, but the absolute icing on the cake was Cullen’s sheep farm. This was so entertaining and informative. … More We learned about life as an Irish sheep farmer in the mountains and even got to hold baby lambs. I highly recommend. This was a great trip if you want to get out of Dublin and see a different side of Ireland.
  • Liz Switzer ★★★★★ 3 weeks ago The Cliffs of Moher and Galway tour was fabulous! Rory was a very knowledgeable and kind guide. He also went out of his way to make special connections with almost everyone on the bus. This was such a special experience and I would recommend to anyone visiting Ireland!
  • Bonnie Timm ★★★★★ a week ago I took the Kilkenny, Wicklow Mountains, Glendalough Day Tour From Dublin and my mom and I had such a great time! Ian our tour guide gave us such interesting information about where we were and was very helpful and gave great recommendations. The actual locations we went were beautiful and gave a great overview of the east coast of Ireland. The Wicklow mountains were stunning and I can see why their … More water is used to make Guinness! Very fun time. Would recommend! I got to hold a baby lamb and I have not stopped thinking about it! Go raibh maith agat Ian!
