ABC The 40th Anniversary Tour 2022: Martin Fry performs The Lexicon of Love album in full and sings more hits
17 September 2021, 00:02
Celebrate the timelessness of ABC's iconic album The Lexicon of Love by hearing it performed in full, 40 years after its release.
It doesn't matter if you remember the slick suits, brave hair and bold blusher of the 1980s' new wave synth movement, or just wish you were born decades earlier to experience it - because forty years later one of the genre's most iconic bands is heading on tour.
ABC's The Lexicon of Love remains one of the most celebrated and iconic LPs ever released by a British group, so don't miss your chance to hear it performed in full by the Sheffield band's inimitable singer Martin Fry.
Released on June 21 1982, The Lexicon Of Love went straight to number one upon release, and gave the world Poison Arrow, The Look Of Love, Tears Are Not Enough, and All Of My Heart.
Fans will get to hear all of these 80s anthems as Martin takes to the stage backed by the Southbank Sinfonia Conducted by Anne Dudley. They will also perform their other greatest hits.
ABC fronted by Martin Fry were formed in Sheffield in the 1980’s when they decided they wanted to fuse the world of disco funk with their own unique post punk vision.
To date ABC have released 9 studio albums: ‘The Lexicon Of Love’ (’82), ‘Beauty Stab’ (’83), ‘How To Be A Zillionaire’ (’85), ‘Alphabet City’ (’87), ‘Up’ (’89), ‘Abracadabra’ (’91), ‘Skyscraping’ (’97) and ‘Traffic’ (’08), and in 2018, 36 years since the release of their landmark debut album ABC returned with “The Lexicon Of Love II’ which immediately entered into the top 5.

ABC’s Martin Fry On His Summer 2022 Touring, The Possibility Of Another ABC Album, Radiohead, Suits, Onstage Pointing & More
As kicking off next month, soulful UK synth pop stars ABC will be touring North America this summer. The dates mark the 40th anniversary of the group’s chart-topping debut album, The Lexicon Of Love , as released in 1982. Of a recent ABC live show the UK’s music bible known as the NME declared, “ ABC’s Martin Fry is a revelation, a soul man supreme, belting out pristine Vegas glitter pop and uptown House… An ageless performer, a self-ironising pop genius on top form.” Fry will be joined onstage for this tour by guitarist Toshi Yanagi (the Jimmy Kimmel Live house band), bassist Andy Carr (Belinda Carlisle, Nick Heyward), drummer Pete Maloney (Dishwalla, Tonic), saxophonist Rob Hughes (contemporary jazz soloist) and keyboardist Daniel K. Mandelman (Paul Simon, Jason Mraz).
Beyond his four decades of accolades and sold-out worldwide tours, ABC frontman Martin Fry notably served as Hugh Grant’s vocal coach for the 2008 hit movie Music And Lyrics . Fry also holds an honorary Doctor Of Music degree from England’s University Of Sheffield. These were among the many topics we discussed when speaking via Zoom on May 9, 2022, as embedded below in video form.
More on Martin Fry and ABC — whose North American dates kick off on July 4, 2022 with a 2-night stand at Toronto’s El Mocambo — can be found online by clicking here , here , here and here .

ABC Announce Extra Tour Dates For ‘The Lexicon Of Love’ Tour
Due to the tour’s popularity, where dozens of venues have sold out already, english pop band abc are announcing extra tour dates for their ‘the lexicon of love’ 40th anniversary tour. the legendary group have been performing their debut album in international venues since last june, commemorating its 40th anniversary since its release in june 1982, and still continue to sell out venues nearly a half century after their formation..
ABC didn’t start as ABC – they are rooted in Sheffield electronic group Vice Versa, with 2 of the 3 founding members of ABC, Mark White and Steven Singleton, formerly being part of the band. The third founding member, Martin Fry, joined them shortly after holding an interview with Vice Versa and joining them as a synth player. In September 1980, the trio held their last performance as Vice Versa, after which they split off to form ABC. They started work on their debut album, ‘The Lexicon Of Love’, shortly after, which released in June 1982, topping UK charts and becoming one of the most iconic albums of the 80s; so iconic that, even 40 years later, crowds are still filling out venues to see the legendary ABC.
The tour first came to fruition in 2009, and had been in the works between then and June 2022, when it finally launched. Despite Fry being the only official member remaining in the band, the rest of the group still came to play, creating a performance for the ages that sold out all their venues across the tour, and pushed demand for remaining tour tickets even higher. Now, the group have announced more venues for their legendary performance, going through to 2024 and touring multiple cities, including their home of Sheffield, to show the kind of performance you’d never want to miss.

Our audiences can look forward to some seriously top tunes night after night! Bring your celebratory selves to the party." ABC frontman Martin Fry stated, "ABC in the USA. Very excited to hit the road alongside Howard Jones and Haircut 100 for an electrifying summer tour across the USA! Get ready for an unforgettable musical journey as we bring the hits to stages nationwide. Let's make memories and rock the house together!" Haircut 100's Nick Heyward added, "Ever since our last tour in 1982 we've been pining to play in North America again, so this is a dream come true for us. Come down early and get your dancing shoes on, because there's a lot of catching up to do." Howard Jones will be joined onstage by his longtime stellar backing band: Nick Beggs (bass), Robin Boult (guitar), Dan Clarke (keyboards) and Robbie Bronnimann (keyboards and tech). Electronic music pioneer Howard Jones has been a constant presence on the international touring scene for the past four decades, playing live in a number of different configurations including intimate solo shows and dates with his full high-tech band set-up. He first burst upon the contemporary music scene in 1983, with his very English songwriting and pioneering synthesizers with 'New Song'. His first two albums HUMAN'S LIB and DREAM INTO ACTION were worldwide hits. HUMAN'S LIB reached #1 in 1984 in the UK and featured the hits 'New Song,' and 'What Is Love?' In 1985, Jones released the follow-up, DREAM INTO ACTION, which quickly became a Top Ten Platinum album in the United States and featured the smashes: 'Things Can Only Get Better,' 'Life In One Day,' 'No One Is To Blame,' and 'Like To Get To Know You Well.' Howard Jones has sold upwards of 10 million albums worldwide and continues to make new music and tour the world. Jones has performed on NBC's top-rated morning and nighttime shows respectively, Today and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. His ubiquitous hits can be heard in such high-profile television series and films such as 'Stranger Things,' 'Breaking Bad,' 'Watchmen,' 'The Carrie Diaries', 'Superstore' and 'Bumblebee'. Howard Jones' most recent album is DIALOGUE , which was released in September 2022. DIALOGUE is the third album in a trilogy of electronic releases from Jones with multi-media project ENGAGE released in 2015 and studio album TRANSFORM , released in 2019. DIALOGUE garnered serious coverage in outlets such as Spin , Stereogum and more. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Howard's recorded music career, our friends at Cherry Red Records are delighted to release a brand new 'Very Best Of' compilation. For his 40th anniversary, Howard wanted to create a truly unique collection. 'Celebrate It Together The Very Best Of Howard Jones 1983-2023' is the first anthology that looks at his entire catalogue, from the original version of 'New Song,' all the way to a 2023 Elephant Talk remix of it that recasts it within a modern electronica context.* It includes songs from his classic Warner-era catalogue, as well as work from his independent Dtox label. For 'Celebrate It Together', Howard has personally chosen to group the songs into four categories: 'Popular Hits,' 'Electro,' 'Chill,' and 'Curiosities.' He wanted to elevate this selection of songs beyond the typical chronological approach and create themes that mix and match different pieces from different eras, with the overall listening experience top of mind. The Celebrate It Together - The Very Best of Howard Jones 1983-2023 is released on 6th of October as a 2CD, 4CD Clamshell Box Edition and a 2LP Translucent Mint Green Edition. (*4CD and 2CD formats only.) To order your copy of this release, visit the Cherry Red store here .

Victorian firefighters call for funding to maintain aging truck fleet
Frustration rather than relief overcame firefighter Luke Alexander after he put out a grassfire in north-west Victoria earlier this year.
The 14-year-old truck his crew operated had broken down and he was forced to book a taxi to get back to the station.
"We were stuck on the side of the road twiddling our thumbs," Mr Alexander said.
"We just had to abandon the truck on the side of the road, wait for the mechanics to come from Swan Hill."
Swan Hill is a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Mildura.
Mr Alexander, a United Firefighters Union delegate, said the breakdown on March 9 was the first of two in as many months involving the truck.
He said a similar event happened last week when a crew he was not part of attended a grassfire.
The union says almost half of Fire Rescue Victoria's (FRV) fleet is out of date.
"The truth is our equipment is not reliable enough," says one firefighter in a recent campaign ad on the issue.
FRV did not respond directly to questions about its policy on aging vehicles, but a spokesperson said safety for firefighters and the community was paramount.
"All of FRV's fire appliances are rigorously maintained to ensure they are both safe to use and ready to respond in the event of an emergency," the spokesperson said.
Volunteers have also complained about the aging fleet in Victoria's Country Fire Authority.
'There's no back-up'
Earlier this month, a fire truck from Mildura was sent to Point Cook, where a truck was out of commission.
The Point Cook station was previously using a reserve truck housed in Warrnambool.
Warrnambool firefighter and union delegate Kallan Geer said fleet issues in Melbourne affected the whole state.
"It is not just Mildura and Warrnambool — it means if Portland get a job as well and we have got to support them, there's no back-up," he said.
"Resources from regional areas are having to be moved into the city to cover for an aging fleet."
Mr Alexander agreed that was a common occurrence.
"On a weekly basis there are emails going out to all fire stations of someone looking for a spare truck due to a breakdown," he said.
But an FRV spokesperson said it utilised its vehicle pool across the state to ensure availability for emergency responses.
"There is no single point of dependency," the spokesperson said.
The Victorian government plans to increase the state's fire services property levy from July 1, meaning taxpayers will pay more to fund FRV.
The median residential property owner will pay an extra $35 and the average farmer will pay about $150 more.
In addition, FRV said it had received more than $14 million to acquire five new trucks.
"FRV has 23 new vehicles in the build stage, including two rehabilitation units, Victoria's first electric fire truck, three new breathing apparatus support vehicles, 12 heavy pumpers, four heavy rescue vehicles and an ultra large pumper," it said.
