We're planning to visit all the touristy places on the first day, Lake Como on the second, and seeing what's left to do on the third.

I've read mixed reviews on the card from last year, so if anyone has any recent experience in using this please let me know!

I just purchased the Milano Card. It seems they are charging you a few extra dollars to add on some addition discounts (10% off here and there, 100% off one or two attractions) that you may or may not use and the main value is the transit ticket... which is 24/48/72hrs. But as stated, you can purchase these on their own. I think it would be best to find the ATM however, if you do purchase it, make sure you get it with the Malpensa Express or the Autostradale... you get a discount if you buy it together as oppose to buying it separately! They sell this card everywhere, don’t jump to buy it until you get it in combo with the other train tickets. It adds an additional 20% off the other tickets. You’ll need to take either of these trains if you’re going from MXP to the city center, so might as well buy it in conjunction with the card.

If you’re looking to save and not get sucked into this, buy the 24/48/72hr tickets at the ATM instead of through the milano card. Otherwise you’re wasting around 3 euros for every 24 hour ticket.

Now there is 10% off and 20% off some sites. If you scout these out, it could be worth the extra $$

The 24 hour public transport card costs 4.50eu.

3.50 is essentially for a guide.

None of the museums listed on this guide as free accepted the Milano card.

You are paying for a 10% discount on some things (bike rental, hop on hop off bus, 3 restaurants)

There are many posts on this forum about Milanocard - there are important information and experiences there that those considering Milano Card should read. For example, one Tripadvisor member has observed: "As far as I can tell, none of the museums mentioned on the Milano Card are "free" unless you manage to snag one of *eight* that are given away each day to a limited number of attractions" [ https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g187849-i143-k9383320-MilanoCard_worth_getting-Milan_Lombardy.html ]. There are often many limiting and restrictive conditions to find even though something is stated to be "free". You will need to click and click and click all the way through to find out the "fine details" of what is initially advertised as "free". Reading other's experiences will be of great help...

The website makes it look official but I doubt it is. I'm not sure I would call it fraud as they do include a lot of things but it certainly seems to be over priced.

What to Expect

Whenever you decide to purchase this pass, there are two main advantages for every visitors. The first one is convenience and easy to use. The second one, not less important, is entirely economical.

When it comes to convenience, the ‘Skip the line’ feature is sometimes the most important. It’s nice to know you can just show up and go right to the front of the line. This is most important at the Last Supper, where lines can be long, not only in high season.

Another advantage of the pass is a comprehensive city map and audio guide of Milan, included in the package. Many of you,maybe, don’t know that there are two passes at your disposal:

Milan City Pass

Milano card.

Let’s see going through the specifics of each card to explain the difference between these cards and offer guidelines on how you can purchase these cards and get the most value for money.

This pass is available for 48 and 72 hours stay in Milan. In two/three days visitors can choose to visit any of the ten landmarks in the city for free. This pass also includes some free tours like the wine tasting tours and exclusive shopping tours.

Depending on provider most of 48/72 hours passes offer free ride on the Milan Hop-on Hop-off bus Tour or unlimited free travel on the public transport.

There are practically two types of these passes. The standard and full pass. The first one incorporates free admission to eight top Milan attractions including La Scala. Visitors will get also an ease to follow city map and Milan guidebook .

Free entrance to attractions included with standard Milan pass:

• Duomo terraces and museum
• La Scala Museum and Theater (free entrance or discount on a guided tour)
• Brera Art Gallery (free entrance or discount on a guided tour)
• La Triennale Museum

Where to get this pass?

All passes are available online. Viator offers both standard and full version, 48 or 72 hours. Here is the standard 48 hours pass with departure point from Milan Central Station, at ground floor where is Milan Visitor Center .

On ticketbar.eu visitors can purchase 48 hours Milan City pass for only 69€ that includes free entrance to 12 Milan museums, 6 free tours, discounts in 7 restaurants from 5 € to 10 %, and some shopping discounts. The pass also include the choice between Hop-on hop-off tour or public transport.

What is Milano Card? It’s available only online and it can be used directly via your smartphone or downloading the Milano Card App. While the Milan Pass is applicable for 48 and 72 hours, Milan Card offers three alternatives: For 24, 48 and 72 hours.

What does Milan Card include? Milano card website offers the following services when you purchase the card online:

• Free public transport for 24h,48h or 72h
• Free personal driver for one ride
• Discounted rates for Airport Bus Malpensa , Linate and Bergamo airport

Free entrance to following museums and important Milan sights: Rooftop Vittorio Emanuele Gallery , Duomo Milan Cathedral Rooftop , La Scala Theater Museum, Leonardo Last Supper , San Siro Stadium and Museum, The World of Leonardo museum, Branca Tower (Sempione park). Poldi Pezzoli Museum, Casa Milan (Milan Football club), Bagatti Valsecchi Museum and Sforza Castle.

Important notes : Not all museums offer free entrance, Some apply discounted rates from 10% to 100%. When you get to Milan, exchange your voucher for the Milano Card at Milan Visitor Center in Milan Central station, located on the ground floor on the west side. Open in Google maps ! Milan Visitor Center is open everyday from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

Skip the Line

Not all visitors need to buy Milan pass or Milano Card. A visitor who has less than 24 hours will not need to buy neither pass nor card. For example, if you are short with time purchasing a Milan card for only 8 € for 24 hours, won’t be of a great advantage.

Milano Card for 24 hours offers free use of public transportation and free entrance to many civic museum as well to some top city highlights, but when you are bounded with time, it won’t be of a great help.

So what to do in this case? The only solution will be to plan carefully what you would like to see in Milan. The problem always comes up with some top sights that must be visited. Let’s suppose you are in Rome less than a day, you’ll probably consider Rome Colosseum and Vatican museum (Sistine Chapel and St.Peter church) to be your priority

Like in every city you visit there are the most packed sights like Paris, London or Rome and Florence in Italy. Milan is also one of them where some sights are guaranteed to be crowded. The time in most cases is the most important and precious for visitors.

How to Buy Tickets for the Milan Bus, Tram & Metro System

Getting around Milan on the public transport system is a breeze. The only thing that could make getting around Milan easier than it already is, is knowing where to buy your public transportation tickets, and of course, the answers to your questions are all here.

Milan is a city with a lot of history and modern architecture, but it’s also surprisingly small. Most things are within walking distance, but if you want to get around faster, or your feet hurt, or it’s raining and the entire population of Lombardy forgot how to drive (and it does happen every time it rains), there are public transportation options for you to use.

Honestly, the public transit system in Milan (called ATM) is amazing, very efficient, and easy to navigate.

The metro, buses, and trams run from early in the morning to late at night and are extremely reliable, and they’re also usually clean and safe.

If you plan on using public transportation, always make sure to buy a ticket or pass in advance. It’s not possible to buy tickets on board , and controllers will fine anyone who doesn’t have a validated ticket if randomly stopped at checkpoints; fines range from 50 up to 150 euros (and said controllers are mischievous, as they often roam the city “undercover” and, sooner or later, will catch you – they’re better than you at this game).

The tickets listed below are valid on all types of public transportation in Milan , including buses, surface trams, metro, and trains within the city limits (Underground trains are a great way to get around Milan, and probably the fastest and cheapest available).

Where can I buy metro tickets in Milan?

In Milan, you can buy paper or digital tickets for the metro.

There are several ways to get paper tickets:

The ticket machines located in all subway stations

Ticket machines accept both cash and credit cards. The machines are quite fast but guaranteed there will be lines at peak hours and/or at main stations, so you might want to consider other options.

At newsstands in the subway stations

Simply ask them, mentioning the type of ticket you need (see bottom of post for the types of tickets available). People working at these magical places rarely speak and have never smiled in their life, don’t take it personally.

In addition to paper tickets, two practical options are especially helpful when you’re in a rush, there are lines at the machines, machines are unavailable, or just simply want to avoid humanity:

The official ATM app

You can use the official Milan public transit app (download it here) to purchase virtual tickets containing a QR code. You can purchase more than one at once, but make sure to activate it before getting on to avoid being fined by a plain-clothed, stealthy, and power-hungry controller. 

A heads up: subway turnstiles have QR code readers. Unfortunately, most readers don’t work (yeah, I swear every time). Notify the station guard if turnstiles won’t open despite you having a validated virtual ticket. By that I mean: wave your phone at them with an annoyed face;they’re all aware of this issue and will open the gate and let you in.

Credit card at metro gates

Finally, credit cards can be used at the gates (the orange ones only) with contactless readers, which also work with smartphones and smartwatches (for the time being, this is only possible at metro stations, not on buses or trams). To prevent getting charged the maximum fare, remember to scan your card at the exit as well.

Where can I buy bus and tram tickets in Milan?

Remember that Milan’s public transportation tickets are the same for all means of transport. You can purchase your tickets using the above-mentioned methods, but the only place where you can use your cards is at the metro gates. 

Price of public transportation tickets in Milan

There are several types of tickets available for the Milan public transportation network:

• single ticket (2€) valid for 90 minutes from the time of validation. You can use this for 90 minutes, an unlimited number of times
• daily ticket (7€) valid for 24 hours from validation
• three days ticket (12€) valid for three consecutive days from validation

All these tickets are valid within the city’s urban limits. Children 14 years old and younger travel for free (but they must have an ID available in case of inspection).
