Where dreams are made. The Koenigsegg factory tour!

“Oh my goodness, I am actually here.” I thought to myself. That was a pinch-myself kind of a moment. I have read countless articles and watched many videos about this car company, that I could recognize the building even if there was no sign nor its iconic three flags outside its headquarters. And if you’re like me then you know that I’m of course talking about Koenigsegg. The relatively small Swedish car company which develops and builds ultra-high-performance cars most agree to group it beyond supercar territory: the hypercar segment.

can you tour the koenigsegg factory

There’s no set definition of what constitutes a hypercar, or even a supercar for that matter. The term hypercar usually signifies the highest performance car of recent time, ones that tend to produce close to or well beyond 1000hp and costs upwards of a million dollars. Production numbers and exclusivity also somehow plays a role in the term, but that’s a story for another day.

I’m sure most of you already know the history behind the company’s founder Christian von Koenigsegg so I won’t dwell too much on it, as there’s countless videos and sources out there that would better explain it than I ever could in words. I will be focusing more on the tour itself in this story.

can you tour the koenigsegg factory

The same rule goes for the Exclusive VIP tour. Pay 8500 SEK (~907USD) for up to 5 people, and an additional 1700 SEK (~181USD) per person for up to 10 people. Even if your group is less than 5 people, the minimum charge is still 8500 SEK. The prices are accurate at the date of writing, so please check the website link for the most updated prices.

Sign up for the base Exclusive tour and you get a guided tour around the factory that last for roughly an hour and a half. Once the tour ends, it’s done. Pay an additional 800 SEK (~84USD) per person for the Exclusive VIP tour and you get the same tour, but the tour ends with food, drinks and a goodie bag filled with souvenirs from the Koenigsegg lifestyle shop (see below).

can you tour the koenigsegg factory

No matter which tour you choose however, rest assured your tour will be a closed tour, meaning there won’t be another tour going on simultaneously. In fact, they only do a few tours per month, if not less, as it’s all based on the factory’s convenience.

For example, the factory tour schedule for 2019 only begins after March as the factory was busy preparing the much-anticipated Agera replacement (we now know as the Jesko) for the Geneva Motor Show in March. Again, you will have to email them to find out the next tour availability, and also for any special arrangements. Needless to say, the earlier you contact them the better.

My group of friends and I went for the Exclusive VIP tour. We’ll never know when we might have the chance to visit this place again, so why not go for the full experience right? And we were glad that we did.

Our tour was led by Daniel, his official title in his emails being “Assistant to the CEO”. Daniel welcomed and greeted our group of eight people and we were told to sign a mandatory Visitor Confidentiality Agreement, followed by keeping away our cameras and phones in designated lockers.

Photos and video recordings are strictly not allowed within the factory, in exception for the main lobby and gift shop area in the photos you see here. Don’t fret however, as you could look up plenty of videos of the actual production facility online. Most of them hosted by Mr. Koenigsegg himself too!

A pristine Koenigsegg CCXR in orange remains the centerpiece of the lobby area when we visited and has been for a while. Daniel told us that the car belongs to Koenigsegg and it’s for sale. Koenigsegg has its own certified pre-own vehicle program called Certified Legends where pre-loved Koenigseggs are maintained and upgraded to the latest possible specifications, while including a two-year factory warranty. The CCXR on display is just one of the Certified Legends on sale, with many other cars available for sale through other Koenigsegg dealerships worldwide. Daniel added that they determine the price through market value, so it’s not a total surprise when he told us that the CCXR in front of us is worth well above a million dollars. One could probably purchase a slightly newer variant if you look around hard enough, so maybe that’s why the CCXR remains unsold. Probably not for long.

Another thing which caught our eyes have to be the R2-D2 droid at the corner of the lobby. Daniel told us that the R2-D2 was built by one of the staff as a passion project. The R2-D2 has moving parts and moves as how it does in the movies, all controlled by a remote control. The staff who made the droid once received a generous offer by an interested party but the staff turned it down.

The R2-D2 is sometimes brought to local events in town to be shown to the public. Even the rust you see on the metal droid is genuine rust, created simply by leaving the metal panels outside to oxidize.

Back to the tour, Daniel guided us through the factory starting from the top floor, overlooking the assembly line below. Daniel walked us through all the departments one could imagine involved in producing a bespoke hypercar. We got to see the extensive wiring loom in the electrical department, touch and feel some of the engine parts, hold the carbon rim in your hands to feel how light it is, witness the painting process and much more.

What excites me most is to be on the factory floor where the cars are being built on the assembly line. No amount of photos or videos could replace the sense of awe being surrounded by countless Koenigseggs coming together around you. I got to speak with Christian when his company revealed the Regera to the world. That was five years ago, and now I am standing inside the birthplace of Christian’s automotive masterpiece.

can you tour the koenigsegg factory

As I am writing this, Koenigsegg is still busy building the rest of the 80 Regeras and it was no different during our visit. Getting to see bespoke customer Regeras coming to life before they get shipped to other parts of the world is very special indeed.

The tour is also a golden opportunity to ask whatever Koenigsegg-related questions you may have. Daniel was as knowledgeable as you would expect from a guide and was more than happy to answer any of our questions. For example, I didn’t know that US-spec Regeras feature four airbags instead of two due to differences in regulations until I asked Daniel about it.

can you tour the koenigsegg factory

Before you know it, the one and a half hour tour is over and ends right back at the showroom lobby where we started. Should you opt for the Exclusive VIP tour like we did, you will be served a meal right after the tour. In our case, the food involved a variety of locally prepared Smørrebrød, a type of open-faced sandwich, and served with a side of sparkling tea from Copenhagen Sparkling Tea Company .

Koenigsegg factory

Our guide Daniel spent the rest of our meal time chatting with us and keeping us company. When asked if Christian von Koenigsegg was around, Daniel said he was and even went to check if Christian was free to meet us. Unfortunately Christian was in a meeting, although we got to see his wife Haldora around the factory floor.

During our meal time, we were also lucky enough to witness a Regera being driven out of the factory for testing. This was my first time seeing a Regera out on the open road in motion and it was very special indeed. You can check out the brief video here .

can you tour the koenigsegg factory

Should you decide to book a factory tour, I would highly recommend going for the Exclusive VIP tour. Sure, the additional cost goes directly to the goodies and food, but the extra hour we gained enjoying our meal while chatting with Daniel, plus the potential chance to meet Christian himself, or to stumble upon a Koenigsegg driving out for testing makes the upgraded tour all worth it.

There’s more to see even after you leave the factory. Right outside where Koenigsegg staff park their cars is just as interesting. From a Jaguar XJ to a single-seat Nissan 200SX with roll cage, the variety of cars you will find may surprise you. One trend I noticed was the love for huge rims.

can you tour the koenigsegg factory

Peek behind the fence of the factory and you might also see Christian von Koenigsegg’s Mazda Miata/MX-5 which was his very first car in which he recently found and purchased. Haldora’s personal Porsche 911 Targa was also there, next to a Tesla Model 3 and a Model S, again with huge aftermarket rims.

There’s obviously more to Ängelholm besides Koenigsegg. Should you have extra hours or even days to spare, there’s the Ängelholm air museum and a free animal park nearby called Hembygdsparken. Not to mention exploring the beautiful Skåne county Ängelholm is located in. Whether it’s food to try or places to visit, do not hesitate to ask your Koenigsegg guide for recommendations!

Inside the Koenigsegg Factory: A Tour of Innovation and Precision

Let Christian von Koenigsegg Take You On A Tour Of Koenigsegg's Factory

The incredible facility is a literal dream factory.

If you had to visit the quaint Swedish town of Angelholm, you'd most certainly fall for the gorgeous sandy beach, rich local history, and friendly inhabitants. But for gearheads, a bigger attraction is nestled within the sleepy village. Angelholm serves as the headquarters for Koenigsegg, one of the world's most desired car brands. While entry to the factory would be highly limited, one lucky individual got an all-access pass to what is, undoubtedly, a car lover's dream.

YouTuber Mr JWW got a one-on-one tour with the man himself, Christian von Koenigsegg. The company's namesake welcomes the video presenter into his office, discussing the progress the company has made in the last three years. On his desk sits a red-painted model, first modeled back in 1994. "It was the idea of the first Koenigsegg car. This is the original."

CvK's guest gets a first look at the Jesko and Gemera's unique key holder. As you would expect, the pre-production unit is truly something to behold. "It's very much a bespoke unit."

The real excitement starts when the pair head into the automaker's dyno room. The faint idle of a powerful engine suggests something special, confirmed by von Koenigsegg. "This is a Jesko engine running right now," he says. The CEO explains the intricacies of the specialized dyno equipment, noting it can currently handle up to 2,000 horsepower and 2000 Nm (1,475 lb-ft) of torque.

The company would certainly need machinery capable of handling these extremes; the Jesko's 5.0-liter V8 is capable of producing upwards of 1,600 hp . The company founder brings the exclusive tour to the pilot plant where the test cars are kept. With an air of humility, von Koenigsegg gestures toward something truly special. "Here we have what we call the TC1 Gemera ," the CEO explaining the first driving prototype.

"We're still driving it, we're building TC2 and TC3 as we speak, which will be a little bit more refined." It's a spectacular piece of engineering, with a 2.0-liter three-cylinder engine capable of producing an incredible 600 hp. Christian notes the unique supercar is getting close to a final product. "Mechanically, it's close," he says. It's a thing of beauty, with relatively restrained styling and gorgeous detailing.

The butterfly doors and their hinges are a thing of beauty, with elegantly designed and machined struts propping the dramatic items in place. The tour follows Koenigsegg's announcement to expand its facility , as the company prepares for the future. For fans of the brand and supercars alike, it's well worth watching the full forty-minute-long video. After all, when will you ever get the chance to be given access to the incredible facility?

Video: a tour of Koenigsegg’s factory

Join us as we show you how Christian von Koenigsegg builds his crazy hypercars

can you tour the koenigsegg factory

Earlier this year, Top Gear travelled to Angelholm, Sweden. Admittedly, not much happens in Angelholm, Sweden. Tripadvisor states that two of the top things to do is visit a concrete UFO monument or railway museum. But there’s also a big green shed. And in said big green shed are many wondrous things.

To get to it, all you have to do is find the disused airfield, take a left at the Saab Viggen jet (how this didn’t make it to Tripadvisor we don’t know) and down the track until you find a giant green enormo-shed. It’s actually an old aircraft hangar that belonged to the ‘ghosts’ – Sweden’s oldest fighter plane squadron famed for being heard and not seen. When they moved out, a man called Christian Von Koenigsegg moved in. He wanted to build cars. Fast cars. And was asked if he would adopt their ghost logo out of respect. He obliged, so any car made in the hangar wears the eerie-but-cool emblem.

We went over to drive his latest car, the Koenigsegg  Regera. It’s the Swedish firm's 1479bhp, 1465lb ft, 250mph hybrid hypercar. And properly bonkers. It involved having an incredibly detailed briefing from Christian as to how he takes carbon fibres and builds them into mind-bending hypercars.

So once we were done driving the Regera, we thought it’d be good to take you on a fact-filled tour before rushing to the airport. So sorry about the production quality and sound, but some video of Koenigseggs is better than no Koenigsegg, right?

VISITING THE KOENIGSEGG FACTORY (ÄNGELHOLM, SWEDEN)

koenigsegg factory visiting

A LEGEND WAS BORN !

The company Koenigsegg AB has just celebrated its 20th anniversary this summer, even if its first road car came out 12 years ago. It is still therefore a young company however, this Swedish company keeps creating a buzz with incredible products and a couple of records broken over the years. When we discovered the One:1, we got a chance to visit the factory in Ängelholm…

Text : Maxime JOLY - Photos : Étienne ROVILLÉ

A couple of exotic supercars and hypercars come out every year. Some small manufacturers take their chances with little luck while others have found success. This is the case of Pagani and Koenigsegg, but also of Donkervoort in the world of low-flyers. Let’s focus on Koenigsegg. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is not the only famous Swedish genius… There is another name to remember: Christian von Koenigsegg.

KOENIGSEGG’S HISTORY

koenigsegg factory ccx

At the age of 22, in 1994, that Christian created Koenigsegg AB. Two years later, he managed to produce a prototype called CC for Competition Coupe, using a Ford V8. The prototype was shown at the Festival de Cannes. Four more years were necessary to propose a second prototype at the Paris Auto Show in 2000. The biggest event that changed the company was a phone call that Christian received from a German asking him to buy his car. This is how the CC8S was born. The final version was presented in Geneva in 2002 and production started on September 11th of the same year…

THE FACTORY

koenigsegg production agera

Ängelholm is a city of about 20.000 inhabitants, located an hour North of Malmö. It is easy to reach because it is along the highway to Göteborg and also close to Helsingborg which is directly linked to Denmark by ferry. Therefore you have two choices to go to Koenigsegg’s because you can also cross the Øresundsbron between Copenhagen and Malmö. Because of a fire that happened in 2003, Koenigsegg AB had to change factory. They moved to the former factory of the Swedish Air Force and made the promise to place a Ghost (symbol of the Air Force) in each car produced there. This terrible event is also the cause of the low number of CC8S being produced (only six). There was a silver lining though, as now Koenigsegg can use the former runway to test their cars.

koenigsegg production line factory

Everything in a Koenigsegg is hand-made. This goes from the tiniest interior detail to the engine (in-house designed and assembled at the factory but produced in England). There is a dedicated room for the carbon fiber monocoque production, another one for the assembly of all the parts of the chassis, one more for the engine and more for the transmission assembly and painting station. To give you an idea of the time spent on each car and why it costs so much, remember that each engine takes between three and four weeks to be completed. The interior takes a month of work while painting is another 1000 hours’ effort, without including the time for polishing!

koenigsegg production line factory

Engineers work in this huge open space and you can see Christian going from one post to another in an amazing simplicity. I forgot to mention the two “secrets” rooms where a part of the 60 (and soon 80) employees work on the future of the company. This complete organization will change in order to be able to produce more cars and fully satisfy the demand from clients that keeps growing. But to understand how Koenigsegg works, you should first know his history…

KOENIGSEGG'S PHILOSOPHY

pistons koenigsegg

Christian von Koenigsegg’s ambition has always been simple and can be rephrased in one sentence : making the world’s best sportscar. This is something that caused the Swedish man to be the source of many jokes at the beginning, but now he has had his revenge…  His philosophy has always been to make a car as light as possible. However, the American homologation of the CCX (dubbed internally “first world car”) made it 100 kg heavier than the CCR. And today, the One:1 is Euro6 compliant !  The work on the weight-saving is possible thanks to the intensive use of carbon fibre particularly in the monocoque chassis. The amazing Dihedral Synchro Doors are also made from this material, so as to take as little space as possible. The other characteristic of a Koenigsegg is the total absence of plastic. Finally, if no convertible has ever come out from Ängelholm factory, it is because the company prefers targas. However, the One:1 is no targa.

THE DEDICATION

Koenigsegg quickly got famous but it is the Agera that definitely made the company what it is now. In December 2010, it was elected Hypercar of the Year by Top Gear. Since then, it has been enhanced with Triplex suspensions and new gearbox. The Agera also played an important role in the Need for Speed movie.

christian von koenigsegg

Koenigsegg is probably the most incredible and the most interesting company in the car industry. Leading technologies, all the while being faithful to the principles of small production, it represents everything you can expect of this kind of company: a well-built car, true exclusivity, and, most of all, respect for the client. Buyers are not just a number on a list. Christian von Koenigsegg found the perfect crew to help him. Friendliness and seriousness are what you can remember of Koenigsegg AB…

Many thanks to Christian von Koenigsegg and his team for their welcoming and their disponibility. Keep on making us dreaming !

Top Gear Takes A Tour Of The Impressive Koenigsegg Factory

04/22/2019 News & Features

can you tour the koenigsegg factory

That is how a hypercar is made.

Angelholm is a locality in the Skane province in Sweden with a population of approximately 41,500 people over an area of 4.95 square miles. It’s always been a relatively small city and, frankly, quite unpopular to tourists. There’s something that makes this place very special though and it’s heavily related to the automotive industry.

Angelholm is the birthplace of Koenigsegg, the Swedish supercar automaker that builds one of the fastest and most potent cars in the world today. It’s not really easy to reach one of the most northern points of Sweden so Top Gear decided to do the hard job for us and take a detailed tour of the manufacturer’s factory. And, of course, to film the entire experience.

There’s a beautiful orange CCXR that welcomes guests at the plant. Interestingly, if you are going to take a tour around the factory, they are even giving you special trousers so that you don’t scratch the paint of the newly finished products. Once you are properly dressed, you can enter the production facilities.

There’s a Jesko under construction at the main site. The Jesko the replacement of the Agera which debuted during last month’s Geneva Motor Show with up to 1,600 horsepower (1,193 kilowatts). In fact, the vehicle you see in the video is the exact same show car that was displayed near Lake Geneva in March.

Aside from giving us a really deep look into the production process at Koenigsegg, the 22-minute video also features an interesting conversation between Top Gear Magazine ’s Jack Rix and Christian von Koenigsegg, who explains some of the circumstances that surround a top-speed run. Koenigsegg also talks about some of the features of the Jesko.

Koenigsegg plans to produce no more than 125 examples of the Jesko. All of them will be hand built at the company’s Angelholm factory.

Everything To Know About Koenigsegg Factory Expansion Plan And What It Means For The Future

One prominent new feature planned for inclusion is a test track open to customers.

Swedish automaker Koenigsegg, known for its high-quality sports cars , has decided to vastly expand the size of its facility, adding onto its existing location and creating space for many new features, including a test track for cars that will be open to the public.

Further, with the expansion of the existing Ängelholm, Sweden factory comes the expansion of the workforce, as Koenigsegg will be adding several available job openings, specifically for production staff and for engineers, with added initiatives experiencing growth once construction is complete.

Read on to find out more about the details of how Koenigsegg plans to expand its facility and grow the company.

Related: 2020 Koenigsegg Regera: Costs, Facts, And Figures

With Expanded Factory Comes Expanded Workforce

In order to accommodate the factory expansion, Koenigsegg will be likewise expanding its workforce, opening several available positions.

While most positions will be for engineers and for production staff, many more new positions will need to be filled. Ideally, these spots will all be taken and the facility will be fully staffed by the end of 2023 , with 100 new engineers and 150 new production staff, bringing the total employee count to around 800.

Recruitment initiatives will be boosted to further this goal. The new factory will focus on production and assembly , complete with additional warehousing and pre-production spaces. The current facility, based in Ängelholm, Sweden, will serve as the base for the expansion, adding 30,000 square meters to the existing 11,000 square meters.

The factory will mainly be for producing Gemera models , which is the first four-seat car that Koenigsegg produced. While technology and engineering developments will occur later down the line, those are not part of the initial itinerary, but all operations are expected to grow to various degrees in the coming years.

Customer Test Track Included

One prominent new feature planned for inclusion is a test track open to customers. Expansion was necessitated when more advanced developments required more space than the company had at their existing facility.

Once expansion is complete, the company can manufacture 63 lb electric motors, the fastest-revving engine to date , and a four-seat 600 HP camless hypercar. While Gemera models will continue production, that space will be earmarked for further expansion down the line. The most advertised feature will be a test track for current Koenigsegg customers to use.

This track will be open for pre-delivery testing and buyers who just purchased a Jesko or Gemera can use the track, complete with prototype testing trials and technical corners . With all of this under one roof, the company will have facilities for design, engineering, sourcing, production, assembly, prototyping, and research and development all in the closest proximity they have been to each other thus far.

Other Brand-New Features Planned

Although the test track is the main feature advertised, a customer lounge, offices, showroom, and retail spaces will also be among the features incorporated into the new facility. The room where Koenigsegg will display announcements and unveilings will be known as the " cinematic event space, " and it plans to take cues from existing theaters.

Further, an experience center will be added, meaning a rotating on-site museum of Koenigsegg's history will be accessible to those in the building. All of this room to expand comes from space that used to store the F10 Air Force Ghost Squadron's fleet. To pay homage to this history, any vehicles manufacture here will bear the same ghost logo from said fleet.

Koenigsegg also has employee health, productivity, and well-being in mind , hence an interactive green space that includes tree pods for outdoor meetings, outdoor gyms, and alfresco decking for staff dining. Solar panels will also be incorporated into the design in an effort to promote CO2 neutrality.

Location Has Rich History

However, this factory will be added onto the current facility and not be an entirely separate property, as the existing location has rich history with the company . This facility has been home to Koenigsegg since 2003 after it once house the Swedish Air Force and its JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets.

The new design is connected to the current space, complete with an accordion-like exterior design that takes cues from other existing Swedish factories. These facilities will be modified, altered, and refurbished in accordance with the company's requirements, giving them an ideal space for high-tech hypercar production, vehicle storage, and parts storage. A new hypercar has even been teased for later in 2022.
