Take a tour of the Mars Chocolate office, where life-size M&M's greet you at the door with free candy

Working for a candy company can be pretty sweet— especially if your employer is Mars.

According to  employees  at Mars Chocolate  — a segment of the $33 billion  Mars candy, pet care, and beverage company — the free Snickers and M&Ms aren't even the best part of their job.

"Mars Chocolate is a truly unique place to work," one associate told Business Insider during a recent visit to the  Hackettstown, New Jersey, office . "Everyone is passionate about the work they are doing — and the people are incredible.  We are one big family and that's not something you get everywhere."

Mars — which was ranked on Fortune's "100 Best Companies To Work For" list in 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016 — employs 72,000 people (who they call "associates") worldwide and over 25,000 in the US. About 16,000 of those global associates work for Mars Chocolate.

Four friendly M&Ms greet you at the main entrance of the building.

Of the 16,000 Mars Chocolate associates around the globe, about 1,200 of them are in Hackettstown.

Mars Chocolate produces 29 candy brands in total, including the billion-dollar global brands M&M's, Snickers, Dove, Milky Way, and Twix. The Mars Chocolate North America campus is also home to the M&M's factory, where 50% of all M&M's sold in the US are made. When you walk through the front doors of the office building, giant M&M's greet you with bins of complimentary candy.

The Hackettstown M&Ms factory opened in 1958. The Mars Chocolate office was added to the plant in 1979.

The M&M's brand was first launched in 1940. Today, the Hackettstown plant produces M&M's Milk Chocolate, M&M's Minis, and Peanut M&M's, as well as 21 different colors and custom print M&M's.

Not too surprisingly, snacks are free for associates. The office has multiple vending machines. To get a snack, you just select the item you want and it comes flying out — no cash required!

"Of course the free candy is a great perk," notes one associate. "But what makes this a truly wonderful place to work is the sense of family. Also, the culture is unlike anywhere else. People who work here often stay for a very long time — sometimes their entire career. And their kids will come work here. And then their grandkids. That says something about the company."

Between 10% to 15% of the associates who work at the Hackettstown campus are generational associates, meaning a family member preceded them at the plant or office.

During our tour, various associates commented on the "unmatched" culture, and reiterated the importance of Mars' five principals: quality, responsibility, mutuality, efficiency, and freedom to span generations, geographies, languages, and cultures.

Mars offers a volunteer program called MVP (Mars Volunteer Program). Associates are encouraged to give back on a local, national, and/or global scale. In 2015, over 2,200 Mars Chocolate associates volunteered for more than 7,000 hours.

"It's also a very collaborative environment," says an associate. "We all work together in some capacity."

The open office is approximately 100,000 square feet.

"We're very open and transparent," says an associate. "Even our conference room walls are clear glass!" she jokes.

Each conference room is named and themed after a chocolate product.

Everywhere you go, you see candy!

The office also features a cafeteria, which offers employees gourmet meals.

"We take health and wellness seriously here," says an associate. "We think of chocolate as a treat ... something you indulge in occasionally."

The campus is 104 acres. "You'll regularly find employees taking a walk around campus to get some exercise," says an associate.

The M&M's factory, a 460,000-square-foot facility, is a short walk from the office. The sweet chocolate aroma seeps out of the factory and hits you as you exit the office building. We didn't mind it one bit.

If travelers didn't know it before, they will now: Hackettstown  is where M&M's are made.

The Warren County  town's new welcome signs were unveiled Wednesday, and photos were posted on the town police  and Mars Chocolate North America Facebook accounts . The signs, sponsored by Mars, include the red and yellow M&M's characters and a sign that says "Made in Hackettstown, NJ, proudly since 1958."

The chocolate morsels marked their 75th anniversary last year -- they were first made in 1941 at a Mars Co. factory in Newark and sold exclusively to the military . The operation moved to Hackettstown in 1958 due to greater demand and space.

About 1,200 employees work at the 460,000-square-foot plant  and 100,000-square-foot Mars Chocolate national office on Route 517. Some of them are third-generation associates, following their grandparents who worked at the Newark plant.

A look inside the Mars Wrigley Confectionery in Waco

You may know Waco as home to the Baylor Bears, but its also home to some of the sweetest creations.

The Mars Wrigley Confectionery may look like any basic factory, but the smell is unlike any other.

"We run into people in the community and they talk about we smelled your plant this morning. Smelt the chocolate you were making or smelt the fruit flavor from the rainbow skittles,” Mars Wrigley Confectionery, Plant Director, Dan Braswell said.

Mars Wrigley has been in operation for more than 100 years, but it was back in the 70's that the company set up shop in Waco.

“So we started this operation back in 1976 making Starburst and Snickers. And we've continued to grow all those great brands around Skittles, Starburst and Snickers in this facility"

The plant in Waco produces over 65 percent of all the Snickers all over North America, 80 percent of all the Skittles and 100 percent of all the Starburst in North America.

How they make each candy is top secret, but we were able to get a little taste of part of the process.

“We do make all our products from start to finish, so we bring in all our own raw products like coco, like the great flavorings we have in our products. We blend all those products up,” Braswell said.

Each Skittle you eat is wrapped with 43 layers of candy, then marked with signature "s", sorted and packaged.

And how do they pack all that juice into their Starbursts?

Foot after foot of fruity taffy cut perfectly into squares, then wrapped and sorted.

Of course the best part, like many of the workers, KENS 5 got to try the much anticipated new duo Starburst that combines two flavors into one.

"We absolutely taste our product. It's great to work for a great confection company," Braswell said.

We followed our noses to the final area of the plant where each year $75 million pounds of chocolate is poured into the signature Snickers bars.

That led us to another top secret find.

The new line of creamy Snickers which replaces the whole peanuts with butters like almond and peanut.

"Our consumer is changing a lot. They are requiring more innovation, they are requiring more packaging types, they are requiring different products and at a certain pace," Braswell said.

But despite the growth and evolution of the candy you can always bet that Texas made, Starburst, Skittles and Snickers won’t disappoint.

“We are proud to have three of the top ten confectionary products in the United States and to make those right here in Waco... Again, we are Waco made Texas proud,” Braswell said.

If you have ever watched "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory," you have probably dreamed of setting foot inside a candy factory one day. Well, there are many working candy factories today in the U.S. that offer free or low-cost tours. They might not include Willy Wonka’s chocolate rivers or edible vegetation, but these factory tours can be a lot of fun.

Candy factory tours offer an exciting look at how beloved sweets are made behind the scenes, and in addition to seeing the assembly methods, visitors often learn about candy making and the history of the specific candy and candy company.

Touring a candy factory can be a great family activity since it appeals to all ages and is affordable—almost all of the tours listed below are free. (If you are a large group, it is always a good idea to call ahead to schedule a tour that can accommodate you). Best of all, candy tours often end with free samples of the merchandise, fresh off the assembly line.

Note that most of these candy factories use nuts in the process, so a tour would require special precautions for anyone with a nut allergy. Browse this listing of candy factory tours, see if there is one near you, and enjoy.

The main  Jelly Belly factory is located (appropriately enough) at One Jelly Belly Lane in Fairfield, California. The company was founded by Gustav Goelitz in 1869. As you may have guessed, jelly beans , in more than 50 flavors (including pomegranate and chili-mango) rank as its primary product. The self-guided tour is free, and it takes about 45 minutes to cover the quarter-mile area that includes interactive exhibits, films depicting the intricacies of candy making, and examples of Jelly Belly art. You can skip the line with a personal guided tour for one to six people included for a single fee, but you must make a reservation.

In Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, you can visit the Jelly Belly warehouse and distribution center. Learn how these jelly beans are made on a free, 30-minute train ride through the facility complete with whimsical decorations and jelly bean characters fun for children and all kids at heart.

Theo Chocolate is considered one of the first organic, fair-trade certified chocolate makers in North America. Around since 2006, the factory is located in a former brewery building and trolley car depot in the Fremont neighborhood of North Seattle, Washington. About 60,000 visitors tour the factory per year. Tours have an admission fee except for free tours on Fremont Third Thursday. The guided tour is about one hour long, includes chocolate samples, but children under age 5 are not permitted on the tour. For those under age 5, a weekly children's storytime tour is offered. You can also book a private tour for groups of up to 24 people, which can include young children and babies.

Boehm's Candies

Boehm's Candies has been around since 1942 when Austrian Olympian runner Julius Boehms opened his first candy shop in the Ravenna area of Seattle, Washington. He later designed, built, and relocated his shop to an authentic Swiss-style Alpine chalet in the Issaquah foothills, which reminded him of home. Tours of the Issaquah production facility and shop are available during the summer months only for a small fee per person (under age 1, free). On a 40-minute tour, you can see how their famous truffles , caramels, and nut candies are made. Outside of the summer months, if you have a group of 10 or more, you can inquire about scheduling a tour.

Carl T. Hammond, Sr., founded Hammond's Candy Company in Denver, Colorado, in 1920. You can visit the factory and watch as treats like lollipops, candy canes, and other popular Hammond's treats are pulled, twisted, shaped, and packaged by hand. The 30-minute tour is free. No reservations are required, but you can call ahead. The tour is offered every 30 minutes on the hour and on the half. Children are welcome. Wheelchairs and strollers can access the facility.

The Sweet Candy Company first opened its doors in 1892 in Portland, Oregon. In the 1900s, the company moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, where it has been ever since. Sweet Candy Company remains family-owned and operated by the third, fourth, and fifth generations of the family. Their specialty is taffy , gummies, chocolate sticks, and the company produces 250 other candies. The tour is free, by appointment only, Monday through Friday. The guided tour includes fresh factory samples and educational and interactive stations.

The Cerreta Candy Company is a family-owned business founded in 1968 by Jim Cerreta, Sr., in Glendale, Arizona. He had learned the art of candy production in his father-in-law’s factory in Canton, Ohio. He then passed the skill on to his children and grandchildren. Four generations later, the business is going strong. Their signature candy is French mint chocolates followed closely by chocolate caramels and creams. The free, 30-minute guided tour is offered Monday through Friday at 10 a.m. and at 1 p.m. A VIP tour package is available for a small fee.

Visit The Candy Factory in Columbia, Missouri, and observe some of the traditional candy-making processes in use since they opened their doors in 1974. The Candy Factory creates chocolate assortments of truffles and, for free, you can take a sneak peek at the process through their viewing room.

When you think Kentucky, there are likely two things that come to mind: the Kentucky Derby and bourbon whiskey. It stands without question that Rebecca Ruth Chocolates in Frankfort, Kentucky, has tipped a nod to both in its lines of chocolate samplers and liquor-filled chocolates. From its famous bourbon balls to its Triple Crown Assortment, the selections are something you can only find in Kentucky. A 20-minute tour is available for a small fee. Children under 5 are free.

Walk the glass-enclosed, suspended "catwalk" and observe nine assembly lines producing 30,000 pounds of chocolates at the Anthony-Thomas factory in Columbus, Ohio. A tour guide explains each process step-by-step from the kitchens to the final packaging on a one-hour tour. View huge copper kettles where the gooey centers of some of the candies are created and take a look at the network of silver-wrapped pipes that carry liquid chocolate throughout the factory. The tour is available for a very small fee and is free for children under age 3. The admission fee can be applied to a candy purchase. No reservations are required.

Since 1875, Sanders fine chocolates have been woven into the fabric of Michigan culture. With chains throughout the Great Lakes region, it was the regional chocolate. With its own rich history since 1919, Morley Candy Makers bought Sanders in 2002. The Sanders and Morely Candy Makers chocolate factory tour in Clinton Township, Michigan, is great for all ages and it is free. Guided tours are available by appointment only. But you can stop by any day for a free self-guided kitchen tour.

Visit one of the places where many popular chocolate treats are made while in Cleveland, TN. The Mars Chocolate North America Building and factory is a place where hundreds of people each day work on producing some of the top candy bars made by the prominent company.

See how Twix candy bars are made while at the building. Go on a tour and see how these famous slim candy bars are prepared with only the best wafers, chocolates and caramel. Watch for how they are packaged in the City of Cleveland with two or four identical bars always going into each package. The mixing, sealing and packaging process for each bar is extensive; the museum shows every step in the process.

Other snacks can be found around the Cleveland, Tennessee factory. Watch as the factory produces a variety of entertaining snacks including chocolate bars, small candies and even chewing gum. The assortment of items made at the factory highlight the diverse line of products that Mars Chocolate makes.

End your tour by sampling one of the many products made on site. Test one of the Twix candy bars as they are prepared and see how well the strong effort that goes into making them pays off in the end.

Mars Factory Receives Preliminary Landmark Status

Preliminary landmark status has been granted to the Mars Candy Factory at 2019 N Oak Park Avenue in Galewood. Sitting on the intersection with W Armitage Avenue adjacent to the Mars Metra station, the large factory served an important role in Chicago’s confectionery history. The status was granted by the Commission on Chicago Landmarks at their latest meeting as it prepares to close in 2024.

Built in 1929 in a Spanish Revival style with beige brick, terracotta roof tiles, and a landscaped streetfront, the factory employs roughly 280 people and is one of three factories along with ones in Burr Ridge and Yorkville. The factory has been a huge part of the local community and has gone through multiple expansions including a major one in 1960, at its peak employing 2,500 people and producing all kinds of candy bars.

As Mars opens a new innovation center on Goose Island, the facility prepares to close and be redeveloped into a new mixed-use campus. The building itself meets multiple criteria for landmark status including being associated with company founder Frank C. Mars, being an exceptional example of an architecture style, and its heritage. Out of this facility and minds iconic snacks like Snickers and M&M’s were created.

Mars is currently still evaluating the proposed redevelopment, with the latest plans calling for a community center, office space, residential units, a new central boulevard, and some natural zones. This includes the preservation of the main factory building which will now move to City Council for its final approval. Currently no date has been set for the final approval nor for the announced redevelopment.

good thing the local alderman & city didn’t let this beauty get torn down. common sense prevailed for once.

I worked for Mars for almost 30 years. I made many friends there that I still keep in contact with even though I have been gone for 30 years. I hope that the building will be kept in tact it is a beautiful Spanish style building.

I worked third shift there in the early 1980’s and met many wonderful friends who I still keep in contact with to this day. They were a great company to work for back then. There were softball games after work at a park a few blocks down. Such camaraderie is hard to find.

M & M Tours

Hello Everyone, I was wondering if anyone knows if the M&M factory in High St. does any type of tours. I live in Countryside Apartments and I would love to go in for a tour. Thank you all

No they don't,from what I understand the building is to small for tours, there was another thread on this somewhere

As far as I understand, No they do not give tours. Wish they did!!

Your not missing much - last time i was in there was probably 1999. The place is old and noisy and in some rooms very hot like over 90 degrees or very cold. There are forklifts running all over the place or machinery running in noisy places like the candy packing room so it probably isn't feasible for them to be running the general population through there - not safe.

They do not give tours anymore because people weren't listening when they gave tours and were touching the conveyer belts.

If you want to take a factory tour somewhere, Try Herr's in PA they have a great tour and offer samples at the end. Also their 4th of July firework display is one of the best I've seen.

And... if you know anyone who likes kielbasa, the very best is made about 10 miles north of Pottsville in Shenandoah at Capitol Food Market. It's about 15 minutes out of the way, but you won't regret it, I promise.

Kielbasi Festival in Shenandoah, Pa will be on Sat. May 17th. Kowalonek's kielbasi is the best.

Au contraire, PBM. Kowalonek makes a decent enough kielbasa and has an easier to find location right on Main Street, which might make them popular with the tourist crowd... but everyone in the know knows that for the BEST kielbasa in NEPA, you have to go to Capitol on East Washington. This Saturday, huh? Is three months too young for a first taste of kielbasa? I wonder....

Mars factory tour provides unique supply chain insights.

A tour of the Mars factory in the Dutch town of Veghel followed by a workshop on connected planning co-hosted by supply chain consultancy firm Bluecrux and software vendor Anaplan. These were the right ingredients for an inspiring afternoon for the SCM Executive Club Europe by Supply Chain Media. One thing that became crystal clear over the course of the afternoon was that continuous adaptation to new situations is key to success.

An angry protest blocking motorways is every supply chain manager’s nightmare. In France, there had been unrest throughout the whole of December due to a series of strikes, and on the day of the factory tour – 18 December 2019 – a national farmers’ strike brought many Dutch roads to a near standstill too. On a positive note, the farmers’ protest gave the workshop participants a unique opportunity to see how Mars deals with such situations.

Edith van Erp-Slot (pictured), Supply PMO Director at Mars and host of the tour, explained that in such circumstances the company can resort to downscaling: ceasing operations on a number of production lines as a preventive measure in order to avoid chaos.

Smart use of space

During the tour of the factory, which was pervaded with the delicious smell of chocolate, it became clear that the facility could benefit from expansion. The factory was built in the 1960s, which means Mars is forced to make smart use of the available space. New, more efficient packaging machines have been implemented, for example. Measures like these enable the company to continue to supply high-quality products at an acceptable price in the existing set-up.

Besides that, the manufacturer has to continuously adapt to new market developments. For instance, the shift from large chocolate bars to smaller snacks is one trend that might have an impact on the production processes. This poses an ongoing challenge in terms of the optimal arrangement of the machines in the production hall.

Learning from mistakes

Focusing on successful projects is not the only way to create new and better situations. According to Mars, you can learn from mistakes by examining suboptimal supply chains. Analysing them gives you a better idea of not only why they are problematic, but also of how they can be improved. Moreover, Mars then uses that knowledge to further optimize its smooth-running supply chains too.

Connected planning workshop

At the end of the afternoon, Mars once again demonstrated its skill at dealing with unexpected situations; rather than serving drinks and snacks as planned, the company swiftly arranged that all the visitors could reflect on their experiences during the tour and the workshop alongside its factory workers – who are referred to as ‘associates’ at Mars – at the annual Christmas dinner.

Well, now you know we have a chocolate factory of our own right here in Kansas! (Though it’s not as colorful, or filled with oompa loompas either.) During solar eclipse totality, you may be able to spot these planets in the dark sky

If the clouds clear enough, you could see jupiter, venus and maybe even mars and saturn.

As if a total solar eclipse wasn’t enough of a draw for skygazers, there will be some other objects that may make an appearance when the sky goes dark.

Jupiter and Venus may be visible during totality.

Of course, there’s a “BIG IF” — and that’s the amount of cloud cover. If it’s too cloudy, those planets won’t be visible.

But, let’s be optimistic.

If skies are clear, you should be able to spot Jupiter about 30 degrees to the upper left of the eclipsed sun. Venus will be about 15 degrees to the lower right of the sun.

Mars and Saturn will be to the right, lower than Venus, but they will be harder to spot.

Mercury and Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks will also be in the sky, but you’ll need binoculars or a telescope to see them.

Outside of totality, it’s unsafe to look directly at the sun through an unfiltered camera, telescope, binoculars or other optical device.

The Texas Optometric Association said it’s also unsafe to use those unfiltered devices, EVEN with your eclipse glasses or hand-held solar viewer, because the concentrated solar rays will damage the filter and enter your eyes, causing injury.
