Know the rules before you apply to travel to Canada from India

Francais | हिंदी | ਪੰਜਾਬੀ | ગુજરાતી

There are scammers making guarantees about working, studying or travelling in Canada. They charge a lot of money for bad service or no service at all. Their actions can have serious consequences for you and your family.

No one can guarantee you a visa

Scammers will tell you that you meet the criteria for a visa, even if you don’t, so that they can take your money. Don’t be fooled . Find out if you’re eligible to come to Canada (opens in a new tab)   .

On this page

Using a visa agent, consequences of fraud, application fees, fake job offers, student scams.

You can apply for a visa on your own, or you can use a visa agent (called a “representative” in Canada). The agent helps you fill out forms, and they can also submit applications on your behalf . If you use a representative, you must include this information in your application. If you don’t, the application could be refused, and you could be banned from applying for 5 years.

There are 2 types of representatives:

  • Unpaid representatives help you with the application process without charging a fee , and they often include friends and family members. They fill out forms and submit your application for you, for free .
  • Paid representatives must be authorized in Canada to charge money for their services. They fill out forms and submit your application for you, for a fee .

Authorized representatives are regulated professionals who understand Canada’s immigration and application processes. They can be lawyers, paralegals, Quebec notaries, or consultants registered with the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (opens in a new tab)   . They can explain the different visas, advise you on your application, and communicate with the Government of Canada on your behalf.

Be careful when hiring unauthorized visa agents

We won’t deal with visa agents who charge a fee but are not authorized representatives. If you use an unauthorized representative, we may return your application or refuse it.

Hiring a visa agent will not help your application get processed any faster or guarantee that your visa will be approved. Agents do not have special connections with Canadian visa officers. Canadian immigration officials follow the same steps and rules when reviewing all applications, whether you hire an agent or apply on your own.

If your application was refused, make sure you understand why it was refused before you reapply . Applying again with the same information is a waste of your time and money. It will not change the decision, and it will cost you more.

No one can guarantee that your visa will be approved .

If you hire an agent to help you fill out the application, ask people you trust to recommend an agent they used to get a visa. Get advice from a few people before you choose.

If the agent applies on your behalf, remember these tips:

  • Both of you have to fill out and sign the Use of a Representative Form (opens in a new tab)   . Failure to declare information on your application is considered lying, and your application may be refused .
  • Ask to be present when the agent submits your application through IRCC’s online system to make sure it gets sent. A lot of scammers will tell you that they’ve sent in your application, but they haven’t .

If you’re paying someone for their services

  • ask for a written contract and breakdown of the IRCC fees and the services you’re paying for
  • get a signed receipt for every payment you make

Don’t lie or send fake documents

It’s a serious crime to lie on an application or send fake or altered documents. Your application will be refused and you could be banned from Canada for at least 5 years .

You’re responsible for the information you give in a visa application even if you use a visa agent .

If a Canadian visa officer finds false information on an application, you’re the one who will face the consequences—not your agent .

If someone tells you to lie on a visa application or give fake documents, they are putting you and your family at risk .

Never sign blank forms or applications given to you by a visa agent.

Before you sign your application , make sure that all the information in your application and supporting documents is true and that you understand everything.

If you send false documents or information or your agent does

  • your application will be refused
  • you could be banned from Canada for at least 5 years
  • you could have a permanent record of fraud with IRCC

The Canadian government works with partners to train officers and watch for fake documents.

Don’t waste your money

You and your family shouldn’t be spending your life savings on an application. It costs around 6,000 (CAN$100) to apply for a visitor visa. Beware of scammers who charge a lot more than that. Application fees are the same for everyone.

  • temporary resident visa (visitor visa): $100 ( 6,000)
  • work permit * : $155 ( 9,300)
  • open work permit * : $255 ( 15,500)
  • study permit * : $150 ( 9,100)
  • biometrics: $85 ( 5,100)

You must pay to have your fingerprints and photo (biometrics) taken, but making an appointment is free .

Fees are given in Canadian dollars, followed by approximate rupee conversions.

Learn more about fees for applications and services (opens in a new tab)   .

* Once a study or work permit is approved, a visa will automatically be issued at no extra charge.

Beware of fake job offers and student scams

Scammers around you and on the internet will promise to get you a work or student visa for Canada. They may also tell you that once you get a visa, you will be able to apply to become a permanent resident (PR).

No one can guarantee you a visa or PR .

Before a Canadian company can hire a foreign worker, they must try to hire someone in Canada. The company has to get a document from the government that gives them permission to hire a foreign worker. The document is called a labour market impact assessment (LMIA), and it costs the company 60,200 (CAN$1,000) for each worker they want to hire. The company must pay this fee .

If a job offer sounds too good to be true, it’s probably a scam . Research the company and the job offer to make sure they’re both real before you pay a visa agent to help you.

Learn more about working in Canada (opens in a new tab)   .

Canadian companies have to pay the fee for the labour market impact assessment (LMIA). The government does not let the worker pay the cost. Beware of companies, recruiters or agents who ask you to pay this fee. If the company does not comply with the requirements to hire a foreign worker, the LMIA could be revoked, and your visa could be cancelled.

If the LMIA is approved, your employer should give you a copy of the approval letter for you to include with your work permit application. You need the LMIA approval letter before you can apply for the work permit.

It could be a scam if

  • a recruiter charges you money to find a job Note: Honest companies pay recruiters to find workers, so you shouldn’t have to pay for a job offer .
  • you’re asked to pay money up front for the right to apply, the labour market impact assessment (LMIA), training, or supplies like tools or a uniform
  • a recruiter or employer promises that you can move to Canada and start working in a few weeks
  • the wages seem too high for the job or region Note: The Government of Canada Job Bank (opens in a new tab)   lists average wages by occupation and city. You can enter the city or postal code for the job and find its salary range.
  • the job description is vague (for example, location, duties, benefits)
  • no experience is required
  • no interview is required
  • a recruiter or employer promises that once you have a job, your family can move to Canada
  • permanent residence (PR) is guaranteed once you’re working in Canada Note: No one can guarantee you PR .

Many companies will post job openings on their website. If the position offered to you is not on the company’s website, it could be a scam. Ask your friends or family in Canada to research the company and the job offer to make sure they’re both real.

If you’re applying to study in Canada:

  • Make sure the school is a designated learning institution (DLI) .
  • Don’t apply for a study permit without an acceptance letter.
  • Always pay tuition fees directly to the school .
  • Check to see if your school has services for international students .

If you want to work in Canada after graduation, make sure you’re eligible for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP).

Don’t let a scammer take your dream away .

Learn more about studying in Canada and working after graduation (opens in a new tab)   .

Not all schools in Canada can accept international students . A designated learning institution (DLI) is a school that’s approved to host international students. If you want to study in Canada, make sure the school you’re applying to is on the designated learning institutions list (opens in a new tab)   .

Many schools have services to help international students learn about living in Canada, the city, weather, finding somewhere to live, health care, scholarships and many other things.

Not all designated learning institutions (DLIs) and not all programs of study make you eligible for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP) . Review the DLI list (opens in a new tab)   to see which schools offer programs that make you eligible for a PGWP. Learn more about working in Canada after you graduate (opens in a new tab)   .

You may be getting scammed if a visa agent or student recruiter

  • tells you to apply for a student visa without an acceptance letter from a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada Note: You need the acceptance letter before you can apply for a student visa. The DLI will send the acceptance letter directly to you.
  • promises you a letter of acceptance from a DLI if you pay them Note: If someone makes that promise, they’re likely part of a scam. An honest school will assess your language and academic abilities before providing any admission documents.
  • tells you that they can get you a discounted tuition rate for a fee Note: Speak with the school directly to discuss fees.
  • asks you to pay money to apply for a scholarship or to guarantee that your scholarship is approved Note: Applying for a scholarship is usually free and no one can guarantee you will get one.
  • tells you that you can stay in Canada for much longer than the length of your study permit
  • tells you that all DLIs and programs of study can make you eligible for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP)

Protect yourself and your family

Scammers want to take your hard-earned money and give you false promises of guaranteed visas or permanent residence (PR). Don’t be fooled: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

What is a Canada Visa?

How to apply for a canada visa, canada visa types, documents required for canada visa, canada visa photo specifications, canada visa processing time, canada visa fees, canada visa status check online india, where to apply for a canada visa, canada visa for indians - definitive guide.

Known to have the friendliest people on the planet, and the most educated country in the world, Canada is quite a remarkable place. Covering over 9 million square kilometers, Canada is the world’s second largest country. Whatever the purpose of your visit, as an Indian citizen, you need a Canada visa to enter the country.

canada visa

A Canada visa is a permit that allows you to visit Canada, and stay there for a certain period. There are a few countries which do not need a permit to enter the country. However, for Indian nationals, a visa is necessary. The Canadian visas are of multiple types depending on the type of stay, number of entries, and the purpose of the visit. Even though the normal visa is issued for 6 months, the actual length can vary based on the Canadian Border Security Office decision.

To apply for a Canada visa from India, you have to follow a few steps. However, before starting your application, there are a few prerequisites. The first one is for you to determine which type of visa you need. There are several Canada visa types ranging from a visitor, work, student visa, etc. After this, you need to determine if you are eligible for that particular type. This can be done by answering a questionnaire on the Government of Canada website. Once you are eligible, you can choose to apply for the Canada visa online , or on paper.

The offline process can be done by -

  • Downloading an application form.
  • Filling the necessary details, as per the requirements.
  • Attaching the mandatory documents.
  • Paying the application fees, along with biometric charges.
  • Biometric is mandatory at VAC.
  • Sending the application via mail or in person to a VAC.

The Canadian government is in the phase of digitizing records, and as a result, people are requested to make their Canada visa application online for the process. To find out how to apply for a Canada visa online , you can follow the following steps -

  • You will have to create an account at the Government of Canada website. You can also use your bank account details to create one.
  •  Once this is done, you can log in to the account and start filling out your Canada visa application form.
  • You should then upload your documents as asked.
  • Pay the application fees as well as the biometric fees and submit the Canada visa online application.

Be it online or offline, after you submit your application, you will have to wait for the embassy to approve it. In the meanwhile, you will also be asked to submit your biometric information. You can provide this at a visa application center, or at other referred biometric collection centers. Alternately, you might have to submit to an interview at the VAC.

Whatever the process you follow, you have to ensure that all the details are correct, and the necessary documents have been submitted as you do not want your application to be rejected. A rejected visa history may cause hindrances in future visa applications.

Canadian visas can be categorized into Temporary, and Permanent Visa. The temporary resident Canada visa types can be mainly classified into the following -

  • Canada Tourist Visa - This type is required by an individual whose sole purpose of the visit is tourism. Be it visiting family members/friends, or to explore the country, or any other tourist activities, you require a tourist visa.
  • Canada Business Visa - If you are planning to visit Canada to implement or expand a business, to attend business meetings/conferences, to venture possible business plans, as long as your main agenda is professional activities, you require a business visa.
  • Work visa - This is a temporary type that permits an individual to work for 6 months in Canada, after which he will have to return home or apply for an extension.
  • Study visa - For students attending courses in Canada that last more than 6 months, a study visa is issued.

Usually, these are issued for multiple entries. Meaning, you can go in and out of the country multiple times in the visa period. Also, most temporary visas are issued for 6 months. However, depending on how strong your case is, the visa officer may issue permits valid up to a maximum of 10 years; or until the passport validity date, whichever comes first.

The documents to be submitted for the application depends on the Canada visa types you are aiming for. There are a constant set of documents that are common for all visas, and a special set depending on the type. The general documents required for Canadian visa are as follows,

  • A valid passport + old passports, if any.
  • 3 photos as per Canada visa requirements.
  • Duly filled and signed application forms.
  • NOC from employer/leave sanction from school/college.
  • Travel itinerary - confirmed air tickets, proof of accommodation.
  • Proof of financial means - bank statements, Form -16, passbook, salary slips, etc.
  • Proof that you will return to your home country once the Canadian visa expires.
  • Identity and Civil Status Documents.
  • Police clearances to show no criminal records (if requested).
  • Medical certificate to prove that you have no chronic disease (if requested).
  • A covering letter stating your purpose, motive, and duration of the travel.
  • Letter of support/invitation to Canada.

The Canada visa photo specifications are as follows -

The processing time depends on several factors. The time taken for your visa to be processed after submission can vary based on missing documents, wrong application form, biometric and interview appointments, and various other things. For a good application, the Canada visa stamping processing time is around 10-15 days. However, this can go up to more than 30 days in certain scenarios. It also depends on how early you submit your biometrics as well. It is advised to apply well in advance.

The costs for a visa depends on the country of application, mode of application, the number of entries, length of stay, as well as the urgency. The Canada visa fees again depend on the type of Canada visa you have opted for. Apart from the processing fees, there are charges for the biometric submission as well as any other service charges, if you chose to apply at a VAC.

The status of your visa processing will be emailed to you along the way. Alternately, if you wish to track them yourself, you can use your passport number and last name to check it through the VAC, or you can also email the embassy you have applied to.

The applications can be submitted in multiple ways as per your convenience. For submitting the Canada visa online , you can use the Government of Canada website, as well as pay the Canada visa fees there . If you are applying on paper, you will have to do all the procedures at the embassy or a VAC.  However, to submit your biometrics, you will have to go to a biometric collection service point near you, or at the nearest VAC. Visa application centers are set up all across India. The Canadian embassy is situated in New Delhi. And the Consulate Generals of Canada are located in Bangalore, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chandigarh.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do i get a canada visa application form.

Depending upon your preference, you can apply for the visa online or offline. For the online mode, you can find the application form on the portal of the Government of Canada. For the offline mode, you can find the application form on the website of the same. You can then download it and print it. However, it is advised to use the online form for faster processing.

What to do if your Canada visa is rejected?

If your visa has been rejected, you will receive a letter explaining the rejection. Even though it will not mention the reasons for the refusal, it is necessary to go through it carefully to catch any information on why your application was denied. You can either appeal to the rejection or reapply for the visa.  Appealing to the decision is fruitful only if you are certain that your application was strong, and there has been an error with the refusal. If you choose to reapply, make sure you correct the faults and submit a better application.

Will there be a problem that while applying for Canada visa there are surname differences on the passport and other documents after marriage?

This totally depends on the type of visa you are applying for. A tourist/visitor visa does not require academic documents to be submitted. As a result, they do not affect your application. The name on the passport is the valid one. However, if the visa requires you to submit your academic documents, you will need to ensure that you can justify the name differences by providing marriage certificates, or other documents proving the change of name.

Is NIOS board eligible for a Canada visa?

Yes, you are eligible to apply for the visa. However, keep in mind that if you are applying for a student visa, you will need to ensure that the educational institution you are applying to accepts the NIOS board. If they do accept, you will not face any problems as long as you can explain to the consular officer about your reason behind this, as well as how it will benefit your future.

Will your multiple entry Canada visa still be valid after you have a new passport?

No, it is not. Visit visas are issued normally for a period of 6 months. The eligibility conditions for the permit is that you possess a valid passport for at least 6 months from the date of travel. So, if you have a passport that will expire in this period, you will not be issued with a visa in the first place. However, if you have a long term visa, and you get after your passport expires, you obtain a new passport, your permit is still valid till its validity date.

In the Canada visa process will I get a refund if my application is rejected?

No, you will not get a refund if your application has been rejected. The visa application fees and biometric charges are non-refundable. However, if your application has been returned just to seek additional documents or information, you can complete the application by submitting the necessary documents.

Can your Canada visa application be rejected if you have medical conditions?

The medical requirements aren’t necessary for visa applications where the validity is less than 6 months. However, in cases where the stay is for more than 6 months, you may require to meet the medical eligibility depending on several factors. If you are required to submit a medical certificate, and you fail the test, your application will be rejected. If you haven’t submitted a health certificate, you will be asked to submit it by the visa office. Alternately, it is necessary to ensure that you are healthy before you travel.

How long does it take to get the visa processed after biometrics?

The Canadian visa takes a lot of time for processing. On average, it takes about 35 days from the submission date. This is due to the high load of applications, as well as the biometric submission. Once you submit the application, you will be asked to submit your biometrics. This can take up some time. If you have previously submitted the biometric in the past 10 years, you may be eligible to skip this step and may receive the visa faster.

Is an IELTS test mandatory for a Canada Visa?

No, you do not necessarily need an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) or any other language proficiency test unless you are applying for a student visa, work visa or other forms of permanent residence visa. In these cases, you are required to show that you are well proficient in English by meeting the minimum score criteria in these tests.

Documents & Checklist required for Canada Tourist / Visitor Visa from India

Validity  of canada tourist / visitor visa for indian nationals.

The validity of a Canada tourist visa can range from 6 months to 10 years . However, it's important to note that the visa's validity does not necessarily determine the length of time you can stay in Canada. The actual duration of your stay will be determined by the immigration officer at the port of entry when you arrive in Canada.

Upon entry into Canada, the immigration officer will stamp your passport and indicate the authorized duration of your stay, usually up to six months . It is crucial to adhere to this authorized period and ensure that you do not overstay your visa, as it can have negative consequences for future travel or immigration applications.

Remember to check the expiration date of your visa before making any travel arrangements to ensure that it remains valid throughout your intended stay in Canada.

  • What is Express Entry? Express Entry is an electronic system used to manage the applications of skilled workers who wish to become permanent residents of Canada. Once an interested candidate submits an online profile, the federal government determines if the candidate is eligible for a program managed by Express Entry. Eligible candidates are accepted into the Express Entry pool and are ranked according to the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). The CRS is a points-based system used by the government to assess and rank candidates in the Express Entry pool. The CRS score is calculated based on a candidate’s age, education, work experience, language skills, as well as other factors. Approximately every two weeks, the Canadian government selects the highest-scoring candidates from the Express Entry pool and provides them with an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.
  • How long does the Express Entry process take? An Express Entry profile can be valid for up to one year. Candidates who receive an ITA can expect the Canadian government to process their permanent residence applications within six months. The government begins to measure the processing time when a complete permanent residence application is received. The processing time ends when a final decision is made on the application. If a candidate does not receive an ITA within one year of creating their Express Entry profile, they can simply re-submit their profile if they are still eligible.
  • What is the eligibility criteria for Express Entry? To be eligible for Express Entry, candidates must meet the criteria of at least one of the following federal economic immigration programs: Federal Skilled Worker Program:The FSWP is Canada’s primary economic immigration pathway. The minimum requirements include at least one year of continuous full-time or equivalent paid work experience in the past 10 years in a skilled occupation under the National Occupational Classification (NOC) skill level 0, A, or B; validated intermediate or better language ability in English or French; for candidates educated outside of Canada, an educational credential (certificate, diploma, or degree) and an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) report. In addition to meeting the FSWP's minimum work, language ability, and education requirements, candidates must also obtain at least 67 points under its points grid. Canadian Experience Class: The CEC provides international students and foreign workers who have Canadian experience with the opportunity to obtain permanent residence. Candidates must have obtained at least one year of skilled, professional, or technical work experience in Canada within 3 years of the application date and also meet language proficiency criteria. Federal Skilled Trades Class: The FSTP is available to candidates who want to become permanent residents on the basis of qualifying for a skilled trade. Eligibility criteria include having a minimum of 2 years of full-time work experience in a skilled trade within the 5-year period of submitting an application; meet the job requirements of the skilled trade; have a full-time job offer in Canada for a period of at least 1 year or possess a certificate of qualification in the skilled trade that has been provided by an official Canadian authority; and meet language proficiency criteria.
  • What are my chances of success through Express Entry? A candidates chances of success through any of the Express Entry programs depends on their Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score. If a candidate is close to, or above, the minimum CRS score cut-off for recent Express Entry draws, then they will likely be competitive in the Express Entry system. That said, it is impossible to predict how the CRS score will fluctuate in the future. No lawyer or consultant can guarantee that a candidate will successfully receive permanent residence through the Express Entry system, candidates should be careful from any lawyers or consultants that say otherwise. The application process is lengthy, complex, and constantly changing, and approval is at the discretion of IRCC so there is always a risk that an applicant may not receive permanent residence.
  • What documents are required for Express Entry? The required documents vary depending on the program through which a person is applying. An applicants should be prepared to provide valid travel documents, ideally a passport, as well as results from an approved language test for English or French. For more detailed document requirements please reach out to our team and we will be happy to help you with your application.
  • Express Entry vs Provincial Nominee Programs In Canada, the federal government and provinces and territories can operate their own immigration programs. However, the federal government makes the final decision on whether a candidate can obtain permanent residence. Express Entry manages three of the numerous economic immigration programs operated by the federal government. The Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) allows provinces and territories to signal to the federal government that an immigration candidate meets the economic needs of their region. Such candidates obtain a provincial nomination which they can use to support their permanent residence application submitted to the federal government. A provincial nomination is the single most valuable factor under Express Entry’s CRS and results in an Express Entry candidate receiving an additional 600 points towards their CRS score, which essentially guarantees they will receive an ITA. Even if an Express Entry candidate does not initially have a high enough ranking score to receive an ITA from the federal government, they may obtain a nomination from a province or territory through Express Entry, increase their CRS score by 600 points, and then obtain an ITA from the federal government during the next draw from the Express Entry pool.
