On this incredible Greek tour, uncover the hidden mysteries of distant ruins, magnificent beaches, and breathtaking landscapes as you travel from the ancient city of Athens to the charming natural marvels of Santorini.

As you set foot on the public ferry, you will notice the bustling atmosphere, where hundreds of people, along with their cars and trucks, are transported across the sea. There are no allocated seats so you may explore the ferry at your leisure; talk to the locals and interact with them if you are comfortable with the local language or may be lucky enough if they speak it.

Stroll through the fortress-like village of Ano Syros, where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Aegean Sea while meandering through the small alleyways, visiting handcrafted gift stores and listening to traditional Rembetiko music originating from family-run tavernas.

Discover abandoned windmills, old ruins, and lovely towns connected by stone-paved roads that traverse the island at your leisure. You may also visit the island’s archaeological sites or relax on one of the numerous quiet coves or popular beaches with crystal-clear swimming waters.

Greece Itinerary 7 Days

Greece Itinerary: 7 Days for Unforgettable Adventures

' src=

Embarking on a 7-Day Itinerary through Greece is akin to stepping into a timeless tale woven with history, mythology, and breathtaking landscapes. As a traveler venturing into this Mediterranean paradise, I embarked on a meticulously planned 7-day itinerary that promised an immersive experience through the cradle of Western civilization. Join me as I recount my adventures and offer practical insights for your own magical journey through Greece.

Day 1: Athens – The Cradle of Civilization

Arriving in Athens , the heartbeat of ancient Greece, I was immediately immersed in its rich tapestry of history. The iconic Acropolis , adorned with the majestic Parthenon, stands as a testament to the city’s glorious past. I suggest starting early to beat the crowds and relish the awe-inspiring views of this ancient citadel.

Transitioning from antiquity to modernity, exploring the bustling Plaka district was an absolute delight. Its labyrinthine streets exuded charm, lined with quaint shops offering souvenirs and traditional Greek delicacies. Don’t miss tasting the delectable souvlaki or savoring a cup of aromatic Greek frappé  coffee at a local café.

Day 2: Delphi – A Mythical Expedition

Venturing beyond Athens, I embarked on a journey to Delphi, a place steeped in ancient mythology. The serene landscapes, crowned by the Temple of Apollo, whispered tales of prophecy and divinity. The Archaeological Site of Delphi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, captivated me with its ruins and the legendary Oracle.

Transitioning between sites, I found the journey from Athens to Delphi to be comfortably navigable by bus or car. Pro tip: Take advantage of guided tours to unravel the intriguing stories behind the ruins, offering deeper insights into Greek mythology.

Day 3: Santorini – A Cycladic Gem

My Greece 7 day itinerary led me to the enchanting island of Santorini , famed for its stunning sunsets and whitewashed buildings cascading down the cliffs. Arriving in Fira, the island’s vibrant capital, I was greeted by a captivating panorama of the Aegean Sea.

Transitioning between the towns of Fira and Oia, I opted for a picturesque hike along the cliffside paths, unveiling postcard-perfect views at every turn. To avoid the crowds, I recommend visiting Oia early in the morning or late afternoon for an uninterrupted sunset spectacle.

Day 4: Mykonos – The Cosmopolitan Playground

Continuing my island-hopping adventure, Mykonos welcomed me with its cosmopolitan charm and vibrant nightlife. Strolling through the labyrinthine streets of Mykonos Town, adorned with bougainvillea-draped houses and iconic windmills, felt like wandering through a living painting.

Transitioning from daytime exploration to the pulsating nightlife, I discovered that Mykonos boasts a plethora of beach clubs and bars, offering an eclectic mix of entertainment. For a serene escape, venture beyond the hustle of Mykonos Town to discover secluded beaches like Agios Sostis or Fokos.

Day 5: Crete – A Tapestry of Diverse Landscapes

Arriving in Crete , Greece’s largest island, I marveled at its diverse landscapes and rich cultural tapestry. Heraklion, the island’s capital, greeted me with its Venetian architecture and the awe-inspiring ruins of the Palace of Knossos, an archaeological marvel associated with the legendary King Minos and the Minotaur.

Transitioning between historical exploration and leisure, I found Crete to be an ideal destination for indulging in authentic Cretan cuisine. Don’t miss the opportunity to savor local specialties like dakos, fresh seafood, and succulent lamb dishes paired with renowned Cretan wines.

Day 6: Rhodes – Where History Unfolds

Rhodes , a treasure trove of medieval history, beckoned with its impressive medieval Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Strolling through its labyrinthine alleys, I marveled at the grandeur of the Palace of the Grand Masters and the awe-inspiring Street of the Knights.

Transitioning between historical immersion and relaxation, I explored the pristine beaches surrounding Rhodes, such as Tsambika or Lindos, offering a perfect blend of history and seaside serenity. For a memorable experience, take a boat tour around the island to discover hidden coves and pristine shores.

Day 7: Return to Athens – A Farewell to Greece’s Splendor

As my remarkable 7 day itinerary through Greece drew to a close, I returned to Athens, filled with cherished memories and a profound appreciation for this ancient land. Reflecting on the diverse experiences encountered during this 7-day adventure, I realized the sheer breadth of Greece’s offerings, from ancient wonders to idyllic islands.

Transitioning from exploration to departure, I recommend allocating some time for a leisurely stroll around Athens to bid farewell to its vibrant streets and perhaps indulge in one last serving of moussaka or baklava before departing.

In Conclusion

Greece, with its kaleidoscope of history, culture, and natural beauty, offers an enchanting voyage for every traveler. From the ancient marvels of Athens to the island paradises of Santorini and Mykonos, and the historical tapestries of Crete and Rhodes, this 7-day itinerary provides a glimpse into the country’s diverse offerings.

Transitioning between destinations seamlessly, planning ahead and embracing local experiences enriched my journey. Remember, Greece’s beauty transcends the pages of history books, beckoning you to immerse yourself in its wonders and create your own unforgettable tales in this land of myths and legends.

We are thinking about booking with them for a Greek island cruise in September 2024, hopefully on Elysium. We like this itinerary: https://unforgettablegreece.com/ancient-greek-history-cruise-tour

Very hard to check the bona fides of a random agent, except by Google.

OTOH....this is almost exactly what a friend and I have been trying to put together. Very well thought out itinerary. Four star hotel in Athens is likely closer to a three star from AAA but that's not a down-check for me.....it's the "sweet spot" for value, IMO.

Where I'd start: query them on WHICH Athens hotel(s). Then, research the name(s), see if they're a good fit.

I likely will be doing the same!

You are correct. We booked a trip with Sail Croatia, which has a very similar business model, and I was able to find all sorts of reviews for them. That trip was practically perfect. I have reached out to this company for more information.

If you have time, please post your decision: go/no go?

I'm also reaching out with a request for more info. I suspect the difference from your Croatia experience = no reviews? This "feels" to me like a recent start up.

It could be a wonderful package and experience. Or, this could fold and take our deposits with it.

I believe I have more consumer travel protections here in Ontario than you do in Kentucky.

I suggest you check which credit cards you own has the best cancellation/default protection. No slur of the company implied or intended! Start ups often fail, fact-of-life.

I will update! The travel card we use does offer solid protection — good point.

From what I can tell, they charter Galileo, which other companies also charter, and Elysium, which is new for 2023. I wonder if that’s an exclusive charter, which is how our Sail Croatia ship operated.

Did you see this article? https://cruise-adviser.com/new-boutique-ship-for-unforgettable-greece/

Seems that they are owned by Unforgettable Travel of which there are plenty of reviews. https://www.linkedin.com/company/unforgettabletravelcompany?

' class=

Hi Javamom! I am also thinking of booking with them in September 2024 – on the Elysium. I have some of the same questions you do. I looked at a few of the recommended sites but not finding reviews. I’m probably looking in the wrong place. Would love any other Intel people have. Thanks!

' class=

Hi Fannish, I share your concern, and been doing some research on their financial health. I found the following and thought it might be helpful: from Unforgettable Travel website-

“We Offer Financial Peace of Mind

Most travel companies do not offer financial trip protection for clients who book with them. The onus is pushed on to the client’s credit card provider to cover them in the case of financial insolvency. All clients that travel with us and the funds they pay are financially protected by ABTOT and Legal and General Insurance Group. Each year we are required to pass a financial fitness test and pay a sizeable bond, in order to ensure our clients are given this guaranteed peace of mind.”

Pardon, my grammar… I’m blaming it on Auto correct!

I’m ready to book with the company tomorrow – they’ve passed my test and seem legit:-). We’d love to know if anybody else is actually going to make a booking.

One more data point: the UK review site, Feefo. Unforgettable Travel has ~464 reviews: 450 give them 5 stars- impressive.

We (three couples) booked a "small ship" Greece tour with them and were very disappointed. Unforgettable is nothing but a pass through company with no local support. We got "bait and switched" from a small ship to a much larger ship. There was a large group from Road Scholars on our ship and they were treated "royally" and everyone else was treated as second class travelers. The ship was just OK and they missed three island stops. No promised swim stops, tenders to most towns as the ship was too big to dock, and their food was average at best. Don't book through Unforgettable if you want to have a nice vacation. Don't believe their web site promises as they are nothing but a sales tool.

How much should you tip in Europe? Here’s our guide

Knowing how much gratuity to leave — if at all — can be a minefield. from cafés to hotel housekeeping, we explain the etiquette.

Tipping in France is historically rare

T ipping is back in the news, with reports that cafés near the Olympic Village in Paris have been pushing tourists to tip between 10 and 20 per cent on top of the standard 15 per cent that’s already included. Meanwhile, in the US (where else?), everywhere from Starbucks coffee shops to local grocery stores now seem to expect customers to leave a tip of 10 to 30 per cent. Perhaps unsurprisingly, this trend, dubbed “tipflation”, is enraging locals.

Luckily for us, tipping in Europe is rarely as costly as it is across the Pond. Here’s how to navigate the shifting niceties of Parisian pourboires and Turkish bahsis without breaking the bank.

• Tipping is out of hand in the US — this is how to deal with it

Covid ushered in a kind of “tipping creep” in the UK, with QR codes and contactless-payment devices increasingly prompting users to “guilt tip” bar staff, cab drivers and delivery folk up to 20 per cent for their services. However, the advice on tipping in restaurants from Debrett’s, the authority on all things etiquette, still broadly holds: “‘Service not included’ means just that, and it is usual to offer … 10 to 15 per cent.” Legislation brought in this year means that all your tips, even via card payments, will go to staff, rather than being siphoned off by unscrupulous restaurateurs. One south London friend recommends the peak-2024 gambit of “pre-tipping” food delivery drivers a pound or two. “They come to you first on their route that way, with hot food and a smile,” she says.

What to tip for

• Coffee Nothing for a takeaway or in some cases up to 15 per cent if you sit in • Meals Discretionary if bill states “service included”; 10 to 15 per cent if not • Guides Optional, but £5 for a half-day and £10 for a full day in the case of a good experience • Housekeeping Not expected in hotels, but about £3 a day for good service, placed in an envelope clearly marked “Housekeeping”, would be warmly received

Tipping is not necessary in France but some diners round up bills to the nearest euro

In French restaurants a 15 per cent service charge is included in the price of your confit and claret by law and waiters get paid a living wage, so tipping is not necessary. However, a small pourboire for good service — usually rounding up bills to the nearest euro — is not uncommon. Sébastien de Lavalette, a Paris tour guide, scoffs at the notion that the 20 per cent add-ons for “naive Olympics tourists” will stick. “The French will simply refuse to pay more,” he says. The escorted-tour provider Jules Verne recommends a few coins as “customary” in France.

• Coffee Nothing for drinking at the counter or a takeaway; a rounded-up pourboire if sitting in • Meals Service is compris by law, but additional change is acceptable in case of good service • Guides €2 to €5 (£1.50 to £4) a day • Housekeeping Hotel staff in France are generally paid a living wage with benefits, but €2 to €4 a night can be left with a note

In Spain, 10 per cent in restaurants is about right

Some restaurants in Spain include a 10 per cent service charge in the bill, indicated as servicio incluido , but this is not universal. Kirker Holidays says that as hospitality and service is “a revered and well-paid profession” in Spain there is less pressure on tourists to shell out extra. In general, 5 to 10 per cent of the bill is acceptable, with tips in cash being preferred, as payment machines seldom have tipping options. Jules Verne also advises 10 per cent tips in restaurants as standard in Spain. The travel company Exodus tells guests on its Camino de Santiago Trek to Galicia to budget for a total of €20 to €25 for tipping guides.

• Coffee Nothing for a takeaway; 10 per cent if you sit in • Meals For servicio incluido meals, tipping is not necessary; about 10 per cent if the bill states servicio no incluido • Guides €5 to €10 for a half-day • Housekeeping There’s no pressure to tip, but you can leave €1 to €4 for each night of your stay, with a note

In Italy modest tipping is standard practice. Rounding up a restaurant bill by a few euros is sufficient (check if servizio is incluso ). The bespoke tour operator Audley Travel recommends that travellers tip 10 per cent in restaurants, €2 to €5 for bellboys and taxi drivers (up to €15 for a full day of touring by cab) and €20 to €40 for tour guides, depending on duration and group size. Cristina Marconi, a novelist who lives in Milan but comes from Rome, says that northern Italians tend to tip less than southerners and that card readers offer standardised 10 per cent tips in bigger cities, “as Italians no longer carry coins”. Not leaving a tip, Marconi adds, “is seen as a slight”. The writer Rosalyn D’Mello, who lives in South Tyrol, advises tourists not to be confused by the coperta , a charge for using the table in restaurants that is between €1.50 and €3 and covers table settings, linen, cutlery and other overhead costs associated, but not service.

• Coffee Nothing for a takeaway; small change or 10 per cent if you sit in • Meals Look for servizio incluso on the bill, meaning that 10 per cent has been added; otherwise tip about 10 per cent • Guides €15 to €20 for a half-day tour per couple/family and €20 to €40 for a full day • Housekeeping About €1 to €4 for each night of your stay

Tipping in Greece is most common on islands with lots of tourists, such as Santorini

Tipping isn’t a strong tradition in Greece, with locals doing so only in small amounts. Tipping culture is most entrenched on islands that have high tourist footfall, such as Mykonos, Crete and Santorini. Dawn Hammett, an English teacher who lived in Greece for 20 years, says that when she first arrived in the country tipping was seen as patronising in small family tavernas. Now, however, she says that rounding up bills to the nearest €5 or €10 for good service is the norm in areas with “high numbers of American tourists”. Ask “ Perilamvaneta i filodorama? ” to check whether service is included. The luxury tour company Unforgettable Greece recommends a daily €20 to €30 for a crew on boat charters and €5 to €15 for transfer drivers.

• Coffee Up to 10 per cent to sit in • Meals About 10 per cent, unless otherwise indicatedon the bill • Guides €20 to €40 total for group and private tours • Housekeeping €1 to €2 for each night of your stay

Many bars in Germany now encourage you to tip by card

Vishal Vora, a British academic living in Berlin, says that — much like the UK — Germany has moved, post-Covid, to almost exclusive use of cards for payment. It has also moved from a “rounding-up culture” of Trinkgeld (literally “drink money”) left in spare change on the counter to card readers suggesting add-ons of up to 20 per cent at bars, restaurants and food trucks. “As a Brit I don’t really like tipping,” he says, laughing. Informal eating and drinking venues often have a Sparschwein (piggy bank) on the counter into which you can drop a few coins if you wish.

• Coffee 10 to 20 per cent on a card-payment machine is optional • Meals 10 per cent added to card payment is the new norm, but not mandatory • Guides €5 to €10 a head is discretionary for “free tours” (the trend of young locals taking you on a tour of their town for tips) • Housekeeping €2 to €5 for each night of your stay

Audley Travel describes Croatian tipping culture as “casual”, with about 10 per cent for restaurants, rounding up at cafés and about €5 for porters marking you out as a good guest. The Dubrovnik tour guide Sandra Milovcevic says: “If you are pleased, leave a tip and you will make a Croatian smile. If you are not, do not.” The luxury tour specialist Unforgettable Croatia also notes the country’s discretionary tipping culture and says that visitors are unlikely to cause offence if they refrain from tipping. It does, however, suggest rounding up taxi fares and bar bills as a “gesture”.

• Coffee Rounding up to the nearest euro is fine • Meals 10 per cent is considered a sign of appreciation but is not expected • Guides For a private guide, a tip of €15 to €20 each is suitable for a half-day tour and €20 to €25 each for a full-day tour; for shared group tours about €5 a head is about right • Housekeeping €2 to €4 for each night of your stay

Leave about 15 per cent if you visit a hammam in Turkey

A service charge ( servis ) of about 15 per cent is often included at hotels and restaurants, though bills can be difficult to decipher and the charge is not mandatory. Kuver is a charge that usually refers to bread, olives, dips or water that are brought to restaurant tables without having been ordered. If in doubt, query the bill. It is customary to leave 10 to 15 per cent for hairdressers and waiters and round up taxi fares. When visiting hammams, Intrepid Travel advises, it is customary to tip the staff about 15 per cent. Mehmet, who has for a long time worked as a waiter in the resort town of Turgutreis, near Bodrum, says that Britons are “second only to Russians” when it comes to generous tipping. He adds that tipping in cash is best.

• Coffee Round up your bill if you sit in • Meals Check if servis is included; if not, 10 per cent is usually sufficient • Guides 50 to 100 lira (£1.25 to £2.50) a head a day • Housekeeping 5 to 10 lira is appreciated, but not expected

Switzerland's Nemo has won this year's Eurovision song contest.

The singer pipped Croatia to the top spot with 591 points.

They are the the first non-binary singer to win the contest - wowing viewers with their performance of The Code, a drum-and-bass, opera, rap and rock tune about a journey of self-discovery as a non-binary person.

Accepting the iconic glass microphone trophy, Nemo said: "I want to say thank you so much, I hope this contest can live up to its promise and continue to stand for peace and dignity for every person in this world".

Switzerland's win ends a contest that has shrouded in controversy due to protests over the Gaza war and the disqualification of Dutch contestant Joost Klein hours before the grand final.

Cheers erupt in the arena as Croatia's public vote results push them into first place with 547 points.

France and Switzerland's results still need to be announced.

Switzerland's Nemo needs 183 points to win...

Ouch - it's a disappointing night for Olly Alexander as the UK receives zero votes from the public vote.

Israel receives 323 points - flinging it to the top of the rankings with several countries to go.

It's unlikely to stay there though, with favourites Switzerland, Ireland, France and Croatia likely to get big scores too.

As host Petra Mede points out - the most important part of the vote is yet to come.

All 25 acts will soon see how their performances have fared among the voting public.

Points announcements will begin with the country with the least votes - currently Estonia - and move upwards.

Swiss rapper and singer Nemo led the jury votes with more than 300 points.

Here's just a few of their reactions as the announcements were made...

With 10 jury votes to be announced, Switzerland is storming ahead with 261 points.

France has nabbed 148 so far and Croatia has 135. Italy is one point behind fourth place with 134.

Remember the public votes are yet to be announced - they have the potential to mix up the board significantly...
