In view of the evolving COVID-19 situation, Singaporeans are advised to stay abreast of the latest developments by referring to Canada’s COVID-19 webpage ( https://www.canada.ca/en/ public-health/services/ diseases/coronavirus-disease- covid-19.html ) and advisories from the local or provincial government you are visiting or residing in. Singaporeans should also maintain appropriate health insurance and coverage while in Canada.

Entry and Exit

As immigration requirements can change at short notice, travellers are advised to check with their travel agent, the High Commission of Canada in Singapore, or the Canada Government website at  www.canada.ca  for the latest information

Safety and Security

Driving: Snow and ice make road conditions especially treacherous in winter. Seek advice on safe driving in icy road conditions. Snow chains or tyres are advisable and may be required in certain provinces. If you are driving to a remote area, pack extra water, food, and blankets. Do not drive if weather conditions are poor. Drivers are strongly encouraged to purchase a comprehensive insurance plan.  Arctic Travel: Travellers should be mindful that search and rescue in the Arctic is difficult. It can take days for help to reach a stranded ship. Travellers should check with the tour operator on their medical support plans and emergency arrangements.

Declare all food, plant, and animal products to customs authorities on arrival in Canada. Inadmissible goods may be confiscated or disposed of. Failure to declare any of these products is an offence. Overseas Travel – Be Informed & Be Safe [Updated on 5 February 2024]

Singaporeans planning overseas travel are reminded to take the necessary precautions, including being prepared to deal with accidents, natural disasters or terrorist attacks. Singaporeans are also reminded to be familiar with your destination’s local laws, customs, and COVID-19 regulations.

Demonstrations do occur in major cities across the world. Such demonstrations can sometimes escalate into violence. It is important for Singaporeans to keep abreast of local news, avoid any protests or demonstrations and heed the advice of the local authorities.

When participating in outdoor leisure activities overseas, Singaporeans should be mindful that certain sporting activities, especially in open seas, may carry risks. Besides ensuring that one has the physical competencies and appropriate condition to undertake the activity, every effort should be made to ascertain if the trip organiser or guide is reliable and competent, and that appropriate safety and contingency plans are in place. When in doubt, Singaporeans should consult the relevant professional bodies or sporting associations for specific advice.

For those planning to travel, here are some tips:

Before travelling

• Familiarise yourself with our network of overseas missions.
• Purchase comprehensive travel insurance and be familiar with the terms and coverage.
• Equip yourself with research about your destination’s entry requirements, current situation, local laws and customs.

While travelling

• Always take care of your personal safety, remain vigilant and monitor local weather news, advisories, and security developments.
• Exercise caution around large gatherings and avoid locations known for demonstrations or disturbances.
• Be prepared for possible delays and last-minute changes in travel plans especially during unforeseen events such as natural disasters, social unrest or terror attacks.
• Stay connected with your friends and family. Inform them of your whereabouts and provide them with your overseas contact details.
• In the event that you require consular assistance, please contact the nearest Singapore Overseas Mission or call the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Duty Office at +65 6379 8800/+65 6379 8855.

Advisory: Email Scams

There have been reports of individuals receiving scam emails/messages purportedly sent from friends in distress overseas. These emails/messages typically originate from an email address/social media known to the receiver bearing claims of the sender getting into trouble overseas and urgently requesting financial assistance. The sender would also claim to have approached a Singapore Embassy/Consulate and the local Police for help to no avail.

MFA takes the safety of all Singaporeans very seriously.  Singaporeans in distress approaching our Overseas Missions for assistance will be rendered with all necessary consular assistance.  If you receive such emails/messages from purported friends seeking funds transfers, we strongly advise you to call them first to verify the authenticity of the emails/messages before responding to their request.  It is also not advisable to give out any personal information such as NRIC/passport numbers, address, telephone number, etc.  Any form of reply, even one of non-interest, could result in more unsolicited emails.  Members of the public who suspect that they have fallen prey to such scams should report the matter to the Police immediately.  Should Singaporeans abroad require consular assistance, they can contact the nearest Singapore Overseas  Mission  or call the Ministry of Foreign Affairs 24-hr Duty Office at +65 6379 8800/+65 6379 8855.

• Visiting your children and grandchildren in Canada

Canadian citizens, including dual citizens, need a valid Canadian passport . American-Canadians can travel with a valid Canadian or U.S. passport.

Canadian permanent residents need a valid permanent resident card or permanent resident travel document .

U.S. citizens must carry proper identification such as a valid U.S. passport.

As of April 26, 2022, lawful permanent residents of the United States must show these documents for all methods of travel to Canada:

• a valid passport from their country of nationality (or an equivalent acceptable travel document ) and
• a valid green card (or equivalent valid proof of status in the United States)

You need an official proof of status as a lawful permanent resident of the U.S., such as one of the following:

• valid permanent resident card (Form I-551)
• foreign passport with an unexpired temporary I-551 stamp (also known as an Alien Documentation, Identification and Telecommunication [ADIT] stamp)
• foreign passport with a temporary I-551 printed notation (“Upon endorsement serves as temporary I-551 evidencing permanent residence for 1 year”) on a machine-readable immigrant visa upon endorsement with a U.S. Customs and Border Protection admission stamp
• expired permanent resident card (Form I-551) with Form I-797 (Notice of Action) for pending Form I-751 (Petition to Remove Conditions on Residence) or Form I-829 (Petition by Investor to Remove Conditions on Permanent Resident Status)
• expired permanent resident card (Form I-551) with Form I-797 (Notice of Action) for pending Form I-90 (Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card [Green Card])
• valid re-entry permit (Form I-327)
• Form I-94 with an unexpired temporary I-551 stamp (ADIT stamp) and a passport-style photo

Visa-exempt (eTA eligible) travellers

The following travellers need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to board their flight to Canada. However, these travellers do not need an eTA if entering by land or sea – for instance driving from the U.S. or coming by bus, train, or boat, including cruise ship.

• British overseas citizen (re-admissible to the United Kingdom)

• Taiwan, must have an ordinary passport issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Taiwan that includes the personal identification number

• Vatican City State, must have a passport or travel document issued by the Vatican.

Electronic passport holders only

Look on the front cover of your passport for the symbol of a rectangle with a circle in the middle. If you see this symbol, you have an electronic passport.

Foreign nationals with official Canadian documents

• Travellers with a valid Canadian visa.
• Travellers with valid status in Canada (e.g. visitor, student or worker) who re-enters Canada after only visiting the United States or St. Pierre and Miquelon.

Foreign nationals in the following situations

• French citizens who live in Saint Pierre and Miquelon and are flying directly to Canada from St. Pierre and Miquelon.
• Foreign nationals who are passengers destined to, or coming from, the United States on a flight that stops in Canada solely to refuel and
• have proper documents to enter the United States, or
• were lawfully admitted to the United States.
• Foreign nationals who are passengers on a flight that makes an unscheduled stop in Canada.
• Foreign nationals who transit through a Canadian airport under the Transit Without Visa or China Transit Program .

Travel and official representatives

• Flight crew, civil aviation inspectors, accident investigators who are or will be working while in Canada.
• Members of Armed Forces (not including the civilian component of an armed forces) of a country designated under the Visiting Forces Act coming to Canada to carry out official duties.
• Diplomats accredited by the Government of Canada.

The following travellers need a visa to come to Canada by any method of travel—plane, car, bus, train or cruise ship.

Note: Holders of a foreign national passport and stateless individuals need a visa to visit or transit through Canada.

If you’re a worker or student, you must also meet Canada’s entry requirements. A work permit or study permit is not a visa. In most cases, you’ll also need a valid visitor visa or eTA to enter Canada.

If you’re applying for your first study or work permit

We’ll automatically issue you a visa or eTA if you need one and we approve your application. When you travel to Canada make sure you have:

• your letter of introduction
• if you’re visa-required, it must contain the visa sticker that we put in it
• if you need an eTA and you’re flying to a Canadian airport, it must be the passport that’s electronically link to your eTA.

If you already have a work or study permit

If you’re visa-required, make sure that your visitor visa is still valid if you choose to leave Canada and re-enter.

If you need an eTA and you’re flying to a Canadian airport, make sure you travel with the passport that’s electronically linked to your eTA.

You must travel with your valid study or work permit, a valid passport and travel document.

If you’re eligible to work or study without a permit

If you’re eligible to work or study without a permit, you’re considered a visitor to Canada. You must meet the entry requirements for travellers from your country of citizenship.

Visiting your child or grandchild in Canada

If you’re the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, you may be eligible for a  super visa . A super visa lets you visit your child or grandchild in Canada for 5 years at a time. Additionally, this visa allows for multiple entries to Canada and is valid for up to 10 years.

Essential travel tips for your next getaway to Canada

As vaccination rates increase globally, borders are slowly opening up. And that means the prospect of more quarantine-free leisure travel beckons! 

At this point, you’ve probably heard of the Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) to Germany . Now, Canada has been added to the list of countries in the scheme too. This means that returning travellers simply have to self-isolate at home for about a day (to await a negative Covid test result) before they’re free to go out and about again.

Now, before you pack your bags and travel essentials for a grand Canadian adventure, here are some safe travel tips you might find useful as you plan for your holiday in the land of the maple leaf.

1. Pre-trip requirements

Plan your pre-trip needs before embarking on your adventure to Canada!

Before embarking on your long-awaited trip to Canada, it's important to iron out some pre-trip requirements to ensure a smooth and safe journey. 

First things first: get a pre-entry test! Regardless of your vaccination status at the point of travel, all travellers (aged 5 years and older) are required to provide proof of a negative Covid-19 test 72 hours prior to arrival in order to enter Canada. These tests should be conducted within 72 hours of the scheduled departure time of your flight to Canada. Among the several accepted tests is the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), which we are most familiar with in Singapore. 

If you've ever contracted Covid-19 and recovered, there is a chance that you may still continue to test positive despite being symptom-free. In such cases, a positive test result is still accepted as long as it was conducted at least 14 days (no more than 180 days) before the flight. 

Another crucial step is to upload your proof of vaccination on ArriveCAN (an official online portal by the Canada Government) up to 72 hours before travelling. Because you’ll need your phone on you most of the time, it might be a good idea to bring power banks along. 

2. When entering Canada

Get a glimpse of the stunning skyline in Canada!

Just like in Germany, there is no need to serve quarantine when entering Canada from now on — that is, as long as you are fully vaccinated. But what counts as fully vaccinated? According to the Government of Canada , this would mean receiving a full dosage of accepted Covid-19 vaccines for at least 14 full days prior to the entry. 

On top of that, you’d need a negative test result that was done during the pre-trip phase as well. To put it simply, here are some things you should have with you when you arrive at the Canadian border:

An ArriveCAN receipt indicating your name

Proof of full dosage vaccination 

Pre-entry negative test result

• Other travel documents (e.g. passport and boarding pass)

Upon your entry to Canada, do note that you might be stopped for a mandatory randomised arrival test (even if you’re fully vaccinated)! These could either be on-site tests, or self-swab home kits that are provided for you to complete within 24 hours. If selected, you’ll simply need to complete the test as directed by officers at the border. Don’t worry — there will be no quarantine needed as you wait for your results. You’re also not required to pay a fee to take that randomised test!

Of course, do continue to wear a mask at all times when in public spaces. To better safeguard yourself, remember to maintain a list of close contacts you come across during your trip whenever possible. This could be physical interactions spent with any person for more than 15 minutes. 

Some regions in Canada may have different entry restrictions in place for travellers, so make sure you keep yourself updated by checking on the designated travel advisory of each province. For instance, travellers arriving at Nova Scotia are required to complete a Safe Check-in Form, but that’s not mandatory for those heading to Ontario. 

3. On your return to Singapore

Pick-ups are done by taxis outside the Arrival Halls in Changi Airport, Singapore.

Upon arriving in Singapore, all travellers (whether Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents) are required to take another Covid-19 PCR test. To streamline the process further, bookings and payment of the test can be made in advance via  Singapore Travel Concierge. Once that’s done, all you need to do is head to your declared accommodation and remain in isolation until you receive a negative test result. This typically takes 24 hours. While a mandatory 7-day stay home notice (SHN) was needed previously, this will no longer take effect from 18th October 2021 onwards thanks to the VTL scheme. Essentially, this means two-way quarantine-free travel for vaccinated folks, and a lot less hassle.

On top of all that news, Singapore Airlines is also ramping up seasonal flights to Vancouver — first to Canada since 2009.  Aren’t all these changes exciting?

While travelling may be different from what we remember it to be, these vaccination-differentiated measures manage to at least provide a glimmer of hope. For alternative destinations on the VTL scheme, perhaps consider visiting Germany’s gorgeous cities, such as Munich or Frankfurt !

As nations amp up their efforts in vaccinating their entire population, we’re collectively becoming more resilient with the fight against Covid-19 — and that can only be good news for all you travel-starved souls itching for faraway ventures again.

To ensure a smooth journey, travellers seeking to enter Singapore should comply with the  Entry and  Public Health requirements listed below.

1) General Entry Requirements

To enter Singapore, travellers must meet the following immigration requirements:

i) Passport Validity

• Have minimum 6-month passport validity if you are not a Singapore passport holder
• Short term travellers holding a passport or travel document from a visa-required country/region must  apply for a Visa
• Visa-required travellers can use the  Visa-Free Transit Facility  for stay of less than 96 hours in Singapore, if eligible

iii) Security and Immigration Processes on Arrival

• Ensure that you do not bring prohibited items  into Singapore
• Familiarise yourself with  immigration/customs clearance procedures , including whether you are eligible for automated clearance
• Short-Term travellers should have sufficient cash and proof of onward travel (tickets, visas), and ensure that you do not stay beyond your visit pass validity. You may retrieve your e-Pass after arrival using the  e-Pass Enquiry Portal  or check your visit pass validity using the  visit pass validity tool .
• Those transiting/transferring through Singapore without seeking immigration clearance; and
• Singapore citizens, Permanent Residents and Long-Term Pass Holders entering via land checkpoints.

Submission of SGAC is Free and can be done via the SGAC e-Service  or MyICA Mobile app . Please refer to SGAC with Electronic Health Declaration  for more information.

Short Term Visitors

• Visitors who wish to stay beyond the period of stay granted can apply for a  visit pass extension  online using the  e-Service . Applications are subject to approval.
• Travellers on short-term visit pass are also not permitted to engage in any business, professional or paid employment activities when in Singapore. Overstaying is also a punishable offence in Singapore.

2) Public Health Requirements

To avoid tests and quarantine, travellers must fulfil the public health requirements below. Travellers who cannot meet the public health requirements and refuse any test(s) and/or quarantine may be turned away from Singapore.

Produce an International Certificate of Vaccination for Yellow Fever , if you have visited any country at risk of Yellow Fever transmission  in the six (6) days prior to arrival in Singapore.

Travellers must serve quarantine for six (6) days from date of departure from countries with risk of yellow fever transmission if they cannot meet the requirement. Quarantine also applies to those who are ineligible to receive the vaccination e.g., children aged one year and below and individuals with contraindications, and travellers whose yellow fever vaccination certificate has yet to become valid.

There are no longer any COVID-19 measures for travellers arriving in Singapore from 13 Feb 2023 , regardless of vaccination status or traveller profile.

What Canadians need to enter to Singapore

To travel to Singapore, Canadian citizens need a Singapore Arrival Card (SGAC). The digital document is mandatory for all foreign visitors.

Some Canadian passport holders also need a visa for Singapore.

Do Canadians need a Singapore visa?

Canadian citizens can visit Singapore without a visa for up to 30 days.

To stay for longer than one month, Canadians need to apply for a visa at a Singapore embassy or consulate. Canadians who wish to work or study in Singapore will also need a visa.

Whilst many Canadians can visit Singapore without a visa, all Canadians need a Singapore Arrival Card. Fortunately, it takes just a few minutes to register for the SGAC online.

The SG Arrival Card is not a visa . Canadians who need a visa for their trip must apply for both the SG Arrival Card and a visa. Visa-exempt Canadian tourists only need a Singapore Arrival Card.

Singapore Arrival Card for Canadian citizens

The SG Arrival Card replaced the paper-based Disembarkation/Embarkation (D/E) Card for Singapore. All Canadian now need a digital arrival card to enter Singapore.

Important information about the Singapore Arrival Card for Canadians:

• Single entry—a new application must be made before each trip
• Valid at all ports of entry—air, sea, and land
• Required for all lengths of stay and purposes of travel

Note that Canadians who are part of the Singapore Frequent Traveller Programme are also required to hold an SG Arrival Card.

How to apply for a SG Arrival Card as a Canadian citizens

It’s quick and easy to apply for a Singapore Arrival Card from Canada. The process is 100% online with no need to attend an embassy or consulate.

Canadians can get the arrival card online in 3 steps:

Fill out the SG Arrival Card application form

Pay the SGAC fees and submit the request

Receive the approved SG Arrival Card by email

Canadians should submit their SGAC application within 3 days of arriving in Singapore . Most applications made from Canada are approved immediately.

Singapore Arrival Card requirements for Canadians

Canadians need just a few items to successfully complete the SG Arrival Card application:

• Canadian passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of arrival in Singapore
• Email address for all notifications and to receive the approved SGAC
• Debit or credit card to pay the online arrival card fee

With these items on hand, Canadians can get started with the online SGAC registration .

Complete the SG Arrival Card application form from Canada

Canadians can complete the process from a smartphone, tablet, computer, or another device with internet access.

Travellers are required to provide Singapore Immigration with the following information:

Embassy Registration for Canadian Citizens in Singapore

Canadian citizens travelling in Singapore can now register with their nearest embassy.

By enrolling with the Canadian Embassy in Singapore, visitors will be better prepared in an emergency . Registered Canadian citizens will:

• Be sent important safety and security updates about Singapore
• Receive information and advice in an emergency such as a natural disaster
• Be quickly notified if there is a family emergency back home

Canadians are strongly advised to enrol with their nearest embassy when abroad for increased security and greater peace of mind.

Citizens of Canada can register with the embassy when processing their visa . Simply select the ‘Register at the Canadian Embassy’ on the payment page to opt-in.

Other Singapore entry requirements for Canadians

Canadians need to meet all of Singapore’s entry requirements to travel to the country. This includes having a Singapore Arrival Card and a Canadian passport.

To enter Singapore, you need a passport that is valid for at least six months beyond the date of your intended stay. If you plan on regional travel beyond Singapore, make sure that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond the date you plan to enter other countries in the region. You do not need a visa for tourist or business visits up to 90 days.

The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any HIV/AIDS entry restrictions for visitors to Singapore. Foreign workers applying for an employment pass are required to undergo a medical screening for HIV/AIDS and a positive test will result in the rejection of a foreign worker’s application.

Safety and Security

Criminal Penalties:  You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned.  Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.  

In Singapore, you may be taken in for questioning if you don’t have your passport with you. Travelers should be aware of the following penalties for certain crimes in Singapore:

·         Possible arrest for jaywalking, littering, or spitting

·         Mandatory caning (a form of physical punishment) for certain vandalism offenses

·         Possible imprisonment, caning, or fines for immigration violations

·         Possible imprisonment, caning or fines for sex crimes or sexually inappropriate behavior. Lewd, unwanted behavior, including inappropriate comments, messages, or photography toward women who find it offensive may result in fines and imprisonment (“Insulting the modesty of woman”). If there is unwanted physical contact of any kind involved (“Outrage of modesty,” molestation), the laws are gender neutral and punishments generally more severe.

·         Severe penalties for drug-related charges, including the death penalty or caning.

·         Strict penalties for those who illegally possess or carry firearms, or who commit crimes with firearms

If you are suspected of consuming or possessing illegal drugs , police may:

·         Conduct unannounced drug tests and property searches, including upon entry into Singapore

·         Require you to provide a urine or blood sample on short notice

A positive finding or an unwillingness to participate can lead to:

·         Denial of entry into Singapore

·         Detention

·         Confiscation of your passport while under investigation

Singaporean authorities may arrest and convict any permanent residents of Singapore even if they have consumed illegal drugs outside of Singapore.

Singapore does not recognize dual nationality beyond the age of 22, and it strictly enforces universal national service for all male citizens and permanent residents. To determine if you have a national service obligation, contact the  Ministry of Defense.

Drunk and disorderly conduct can lead to a SG$1,000 fine or imprisonment. It is illegal to drink alcohol in a public place between 10:30 pm and 7:00 am. The areas of Geylang and Little India are designated as “Liquor Control Zones” where drinking in public places is prohibited all weekend, on public holidays, and on the eve of public holidays.

Public Demonstrations:  Public demonstrations are legal only at Speakers’ Corner in Hong Lim Park. Most outdoor public assemblies require a police permit. Singapore forbids foreign nationals who do not have permanent resident status from participating in or observing permitted public demonstrations, assemblies, and processions at Speakers’ Corner. Penalties may be severe, including large fines and/or imprisonment.

Arrest Notification:  If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our  webpage  for further information.

Faith-Based Travelers:  The Singapore Convention of Jehovah’s Witness and the Unification Church are banned by the Singapore government. All written materials published by the International Bible Students Association and the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, publishing arms of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, remain banned. Possible penalties include fines and imprisonment.

LGBTI Travelers:  Singapore does not recognize same-sex unions. The Penal Code criminalizes any “act of gross indecency” between two men and prescribes a sentence not exceeding two years for those found guilty under this law. The Singaporean government has stated that it will not enforce this section of the Penal Code but it remains on the statute books. The government restricts foreigners from involvement in public events that champion LGBTI issues. LGBTI individuals may have difficulty gaining employment in certain sectors of the civil service. The  Ministry of Manpower  does not issue dependent passes (work permits) to partners in lesbian and gay relationships, even if legally married in another country.

Travelers with Disabilities: The law in Singapore does not explicitly prohibit discrimination against persons with disabilities. Social acceptance of persons with disabilities in public is as prevalent as in the United States. The most common types of accessibility include accessible facilities, information, and access to services. Expect accessibility to be common in public transportation, lodging, communication/information, and general infrastructure.

Singapore amended its laws in April 2017 to forbid foreign nationals who are not permanent residents from observing permitted public demonstrations, assemblies, and processions at Speakers’ Corner. The law does not distinguish between participants and observers, so anyone at Speakers’ Corner could be considered part of an event. Penalties may be severe, including large fines and/or imprisonment.

Faith-Based Travelers:  The Singapore Convention of Jehovah’s Witness and the Unification Church continue to be banned by the Singapore government. LGBTI Travelers:  Singapore does not recognize same-sex unions. The Penal Code criminalizes any “act of gross indecency” between two men and prescribes a sentence not exceeding two years for those found guilty under this law. The Singaporean government has stated that it will not enforce this section of the Penal Code but it remains on the statute books. The government issues permits for open air events that openly champion LGBTI issues on a limited basis but new regulations restrict foreign involvement. LGBTI individuals may have difficulty gaining employment in certain sectors of the civil service. The  Ministry of Manpower  does not issue dependent passes (work permits) to partners in lesbian and gay relationships, even if legally married in another country.

Travelers Who Require Accessibility Assistance:  Singapore has established a comprehensive code of standards for barrier-free accessibility, including facilities for persons with physical disabilities, in all new buildings and has mandated the progressive upgrading of older structures. Traffic Laws:  Driving is done on the left-hand side of the road. Laws involving traffic rules, vehicle registration, and liability in case of accident are strictly enforced and violations may result in criminal penalties.

Public Transportation:  Public transportation and taxis are abundant, inexpensive, and reliable. Bus stops and trains have panels indicating all routes and stops.

Singapore’s only direct flight service to and from Canada has begun as Air Canada's first flight in the new route, AC19, landed at Changi Airport on Thursday (Apr 4)  morning. T his marks the airline’s first return to Changi Airport in over 30 years.

Operated four times weekly on Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, the non-stop flight between Singapore and Vancouver takes 14 hours and 40 minutes.

This route is the airline’s longest flight measured by distance, stretching 12,818km , said Canada's national carrier.

“Changi Airport is thrilled to welcome Air Canada to Singapore. Travellers on the Singapore-Vancouver route can enjoy a choice of three cabins: Economy, Premium Economy and Air Canada Signature Class, which has lie-flat seats.

All cabins have inflight entertainment screens at every seat with hours of movies, TV shows, as well as music and podcasts.

“We welcome this new service which will grow tourism, support increased trade, and importantly, connect families and friends across the Pacific region,” said Vancouver Airport Authority President and CEO, Tamara Vrooman.

There's a new option to get from North America to Singapore

No matter where you live in North America, getting to Singapore (and Southeast Asia in general) is a real trek.

Unless you're flying from a major hub, you'll need to connect along the way. Fortunately, Singapore will soon offer nonstop flights to one more big North American airport: Vancouver International Airport (YVR).

Air Canada announced earlier this week that it would add Singapore to its route map come April 2024.

The new 7,967-mile route will operate four times a week starting on April 3, 2024. It'll operate on a 298-seat Boeing 787 Dreamliner featuring 30 business-class suites, 21 premium economy recliners and 247 economy-class seats.

While the new flight will mark Air Canada's first service to Singapore, it's perhaps equally exciting for Vancouver, British Columbia, as the city recently lost flights to Singapore operated by Singapore Airlines .

Air Canada has been busy building its Vancouver hub as a key transpacific gateway, especially with the addition of new services to Bangkok and now Singapore.

The new flights are timed well for connections beyond Vancouver. So, travelers based elsewhere in Canada and the U.S. should start seeing an Air Canada option bubble up to the top of their flight searches.

Also, Air Canada's membership in the Star Alliance means that it can funnel connections to destinations across Southeast Asia, southern India and Western Australia via its alliance and codeshare partner Singapore Airlines.

Singapore's flag carrier used to fly to Vancouver (via Seoul, South Korea) until April 2009, when it cut its Canadian route for more than 12 years, Cirium schedules show. Singapore Airlines restarted flying to Vancouver (as a tag flight in conjunction with service to Seattle) in December 2021; it then operated the route nonstop beginning in June 2022.

Unfortunately, the airline seemingly hasn't been impressed with the route's performance; Singapore's Vancouver route is being cut in September as it "adjusts capacity in response to demand."

In the U.S., Singapore Airlines flies the world's two longest flights from New York and Newark to Singapore. It also operates routes from Singapore to other gateways, including Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle.

United Airlines also flies nonstop from San Francisco to Singapore.

At the moment, it doesn't appear that Air Canada has released any saver award seats on its new Vancouver-to-Singapore route, but we'll certainly be monitoring it.

Air Canada Celebrates Singapore Route Launch With 15,000 Bonus Points On Fights

• Celebrate Air Canada's return to Singapore with bonus points by booking this month and taking a round-trip journey.

• Air Canada's Vancouver-Singapore flight is the only non-stop connection between the two countries, offering numerous onward connection options.

Star Alliance carrier Air Canada is celebrating its return to Singapore after more than 30 years with a significant promotion for frequent flyers. Passengers who book the route this month and complete a round-trip journey will receive up to 15,000 bonus points to celebrate the momentous occasion.

How does it work?

Passengers must be members of Air Canada's frequent flyer program, Aeroplan , to participate. The offer is valid on all flights departing from Canada, including flights that continue onward via Singapore across partner airlines. To earn the bonus miles, travelers must complete the following steps:

• Register for the offer on the dedicated Air Canada webpage .
• Book the flight by Friday, April 12th, at 23:59 Pacific Time .
• Travel between now and March 15th, 2025.

The bonus amount depends on which class of travel is booked. Economy Standard tickets will earn 5,000 bonus points. Passengers traveling on Economy Flex, Latitude, and Comfort fares will receive 10,000 bonus points. While Business, Premium Economy, and Premium Rouge fares are eligible for the full 15,000 bonus points

Air Canada is far from the only entity excited about the launch. Vancouver Airport (YVR), the departure hub for flights to Singapore, is launching its own promotion for a pair of free tickets on the route. Participants can earn more than one entry in the competition by responding to the post, tagging friends on social media, or completing a puzzle on the airport website by midnight tonight.

Responses and shares count for one entry each and do not have to be correct to win.

Coming back to Changi

The first flight landed at Singapore Changi International Airport (SIN) on Wednesday, April 3rd. It became the sole link between Canada and Singapore, taking over from Star Alliance partner Singapore Airlines in connecting the two countries. Passengers can earn Aeroplan points on all legs of the journey. In addition to Singapore Airlines, multiple Star Alliance partners operate out of Singapore, including All Nippon Airways (ANA), Air New Zealand, and Asiana Airlines. Air Canada has separate codeshare agreements with other carriers in the region, including Cathay Pacific and Virgin Australia.

Speaking to The Straits Times , Kiyo Weiss, Senior Director of Sales for the Asia-Pacific at Air Canada, noted around 153,000 Canadians visited Singapore in 2023, with a healthy mix of demand from businesses, leisure travelers, visiting friends and families, and students.

The Vancouver-Singapore route is currently running four times a week, with a fifth weekly rotation set to join in December. Air Canada uses its Boeing 787-9s to operate the route. The Dreamliners seat 30 passengers in buisness class with lie-flat individual pods, 21 in Premium Economy, and 247 in Standard Economy.

Air Canada launched its longest flight by distance on April 3, connecting Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and Singapore Changi International Airport (SIN) . The route is nearly 7,965 miles (13,000 km) long and takes 16 hours and 5 minutes to complete.

This flight marks Air Canada's latest new route and furthers the carrier's already-packed summer schedule.

A strategic new route

The first flight left Vancouver at 00:21, 16 minutes later than scheduled. It proceeded to Singapore, where it landed at 07:37, with a delay of roughly 20 minutes. The plane was in the air for longer than initially planned, translating into a journey of 16 hours and 16 minutes.

According to Flightradar24 , a Boeing 787-9 with registration C-GYJW operated this service. The aircraft is virtually new, being delivered to Air Canada's Toronto base on February 15.

Mark Galardo, Executive Vice President of Revenue and Network Planning at Air Canada, said:

Singapore Airlines currently flies to 130 destinations from its hub at Changi International. The carrier is also a Star Alliance member, the same airline alliance as Air Canada. Therefore, passengers traveling with Air Canada to Singapore can then hop on a Singapore Airlines to reach their final destination. As underlined by Galardo:

The importance of connecting the two cities, however, goes beyond the interests of the two airlines. The Honourable Jagrup Brar, Minister of State for Trade, Government of British Columbia, underlined the socio-economic advantages of Air Canada's latest route:

"The reality of directly connecting Singapore, Southeast Asia's most active economic gateway and financial hub with British Columbia, Canada's gateway to the Pacific can mean limitless opportunities. This new direct flight opens fresh opportunities for travel and tourism, business collaboration, and access to global markets that will directly benefit people in Singapore, Southeast Asia, and throughout our province."

The service operates four times a week on the outbound legs: Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. It returns the day after. The timetable is listed below.

According to Aeroroutes , the airline has already planned to increase frequencies on its new route as of December 2024, introducing a fifth weekly flight. The flights will be added as of December 4, 2024.

Air Canada has also expanded frequencies on several routes and introduced new services this summer. This includes flights from Toronto to Tulum, which will launch on May 3, and Vancouver to Osaka as of May 1.
